I am bilingual and am raising my son bilingual, too. This is an excellent book and series with adorable pictures, and each page has both english and spanish on it. The back includes pronunciation guides for all the vocabulary (both for english and spanish) which is helpful for my husband, a non-native speaker. It's very hard to find quality bilingual books- I've looked around a lot and loved these so much I have even given them as gifts to friends who want to introduce their kids (and themselves) to the language.

GREAT book for early Spanish learning.......2006-07-04

Normally I would say that my daughter is a little old for this type of book. At 5 she is a bit beyond little board books without many words. But for laying a foundation for Spanish, this book is just what both she & I need. The simple sentences allow us to see what exactly each word means, as well as get an intuitive grasp on the grammer, and the pronunciation guide in the back is VERY helpfull.

I know that we will quickly move beyond this book, but for now I view it as essential for our grasping Spanish. In fact, I plan on buying the other books in this series.

This is another book that I enjoyed by this author. My children have asked me to continue to purchase this books and they read them all the time. I see the joy and excitement on their faces as they say different words in Spanish and actually know the meaning. I feel that it is important for the and myself to learn a second language, and books like these have been able to serve as a base for my entire family. It's easy to read and grasp, and a good reference to look at when necessary. Keep up the great work Gladys and I'll keep reading your books. Learning is a continuous process and now it's become really fun!

My 5 year old daughter loves this book. She enjoys both the brief stories accompanying each illustration, and examining each illustration and looking closely at the fascinating details. The text describes a large family and their many traditions that are interesting whether or not you are familiar with Mexican-American traditions and customs. Although we don't read Spanish, we like having the text in Spanish available for us to learn the words and phrases.

I have read many children's books; this book however, isn't really a book for reading. It's greatest attribute are it's pictures. It does have a small descriptive paragraph opposite each picture in both English and Spanish, therefore making the book accessible to many different children. It is a great multicultural book; you can learn about the culture and traditions of a Mexican American family. It is a good book to develop multiculturalism and can be used in many ways in the classroom.

Cuadros de familia.......2005-05-28

This book is a must have for ALL classrooms, but especially Bilingual and Dual Language Classrooms! I use it all year long! My students LOVE it so much that I bought them each their own copy for Día del niño this year. We use it as a writing prompt, they connect text to self and compare and contrast. The illustrations are beautiful. This year we used it for our yearly diorama project. Instead of the children choosing random books to do a diorama on, they chose the cuadro that most spoke to them and their family experience, and did their diorama on that. They also did a beautiful piece of polished writing comparing a family memory with that cuadro. This is my favorite book to use in the classroom, and many adults love to receive it as a gift as well. It brings back beautiful memories to all ages. This is truly a treasure. I cannot reccomend it highly enough! It is also great to leave for a substitute because it is bilingual and you know you cannot count on all subs speaking Spanish! The students never get tired of reading it or writing about it!

Family Pictures is an excellent example of an autobiographical as well as multicultural book written for children from kindergarten through fourth grade. Lomas Garza covers a short period of her own childhood and the social life and customs of Hispanic Americans. The reader's attention is held by the detailed illustrations done in a variety of materials including oil on canvas, acrylic on canvas, and gouache on arches paper. While children will be drawn by the wonderful paintings, they will be learning a great deal about the Hispanic culture.

Family Pictures is a book within our third grade anthology, and it is definitely worth buying. This book is an excellent example of an autobiography or personal experience narrative for students to read while using background knowledge to make schema connections of all kinds, especially text to self connections. Students will use the author's detailed illustrations and text to predict, question, infer, and synthesize. I was so impressed by this book, that I bought the author's other book called In My Family, and found it to be an excellent sequel for text to text connections with Family Pictures. My class used the book Family Pictures to create our own classroom book of family pictures using the author's craft to guide our own photo summaries. This activity incorporates not only the use of elaborative detail, but teaches the skill of summarizing by using the 5 W's: (who, what, when, where, why). Text to text connections may also be made relating this book to Too Many Tamales and When I Was Young in the Mountains.

Oerberg's Lingua Latina is an amazing accomplishment. It will not be received well by everyone, but this is not owing to any deficiency in the text. Unfortunately, we live in a time when the study of Latin has been relegated to the grammarians---who would rather concoct a rule for the language than understand it *as* a language.

We also live in a time when Latin in general is only very poorly understood, even by those who are bold enough to teach it. Catch the average university Latinist off guard with any real question about Latin, and you'll learn quickly how bad it really is. As they have been taught, so they are producing: students who can only recite a conjugation paradigm but cannot "ask where the bathroom is". Texts like Wheelock contribute horribly to this problem.

Lingua Latina offers something different. It is for those who want to actually learn Latin for what it is, not a tricky puzzle but a language which can be understood. Without exaggeration, when you have finished Lingua Latina you will have read many times more Latin than by finishing Wheelock's. You probably won't be so quick to respond when someone asks you, "so what is a passive periphrastic?" But you also won't be subvocalizing in English when reading simple, real Latin authors.

Trust me, as a recovering student-of-Wheelock, this book will help you actually understand *Latin*. So cast off your chains of grammar and start learning the language. Stop learning *about* Latin and start understanding it.

I love this book! There is no English and we have to figure it all out - and at the same time it is written so that it is easy to figure out! The way it is written makes learning and reviewing vocabulary and grammar fun and "easy" (you still need to study!) It does help to have an idea the basics of Latin vocabulary.

Perfect way to learn Latin!.......2006-11-13

For those studying independently or in a dedicated group, this book aims to make you fluent in Latin, in reading it at least, but also it helps for those wishing to speak it better. It's a complete course in the language and works great as review. I'm not sure I'd recommend it as the _only_ text for complete beginners, especially if those beginners have never studied a second language before, but it would work fine in conjunction with another text such as Wheelock's.

Drs. Santiago-Rivera, Arredondo, and Gallardo-Cooper have produced a very handy guide to working with Latinos. These well-respected Latina psychologists focus their chapters on practical guidelines useful for any clinician or student in training. The book covers issues with Latinos in both broad and specific ways, including ethnicity-specific information on Latino subgroups where relevant, but also providing general information helpful with Latino clients of any background. Chapters focus on multicultural competencies, historical contexts relevant to understanding Latino families, and various counseling interventions. Appendices are offered at the end of the book, including a list of acculturation measures useful with Latinos, a glossary of terms, a culture-centered clinical interview, and bibliotherapy resources.
