compelling!.......2003-02-02
I read the book years ago and in my opinion the most compelling "insider" account of mafia mores...It is true that most true crime mafia tales are written by or with the help of mob members, hence the dubious veracity of some facts.(I was reminded of this book, as I just finished For the sins of my Father, written poignantly by Al Demeo, the son of a murderous mobster. We get to see another avenue in this certain world of horror.)
Mob Lawyer provides this same kind of insight, as Ragano was invited in to the mob world for a function, but he was not involved in the criminal activities.Extremely insightful.
From his son........2002-04-17
I was overwhelmed by the reviews, both positive and negative. The book only reveals some of the highlights of my
father's career. It captures the essence of what really transpired between Hoffa, Trafficante, and Marcello. He was in an unusual position to be able to represent all three of these men at once. According to my father, it was "tantamount to being counsel for General Motors." The book explores the uneasiness of trying to represent your clients zealously, yet ethically. In the end, though, he crossed the line of objectivity: Your never socialize with your clients, he would warn. When he was fighting Bobby Kennedy ("The General") in court, all too often he would refer to it as: "Their enemies became my enemies." The book reveals the inter-workings of a truly brilliant criminal defense attorney. It also shows how insightful these mafia chieftains were to the american public being exposed to drugs, particularly cocaine. This is later demostrated in John Gotti's interactions with the mob. I am very proud of him and I think he would be very proud of me, although I concentrate my practice in family law, where the clients are less difficult.
Straight-Forward & Believable: Hoffa, the Mob, Kennedys.......2002-01-08
A Straight-Forward and seemingly reliable Mob-insider's account by one of the LCN's top lawyers. Ragano is no name dropper, nor is he full of it. He was a top Lawyer for both Hoffa and Santo Trafficante from the late 50s through the 80s.
The books explores the life of Tampa lawyer Ragano and his close relationship to Santo Trafficante. This is one of the few, if not only books, that examines the life of this shadowy, but important mobster who by his own and others' admission, was involved in planned or real assassinations of Castro and JFK.
Ragano's account of his dealings with Hoffa and Trafficante and his association with a who's-who of Organized Crime personalities- Carlos Marcello, Luchesse, Gooodfellow's mobsters Henry Hill and Jimmy Burke, Sinatra, Alan Dorfman (who milked the Central States Pesnion fund for all it was worth) and others -- is told without nonsenes and in a fully credible way.
Ragano is not a conspiracy nut, nor does he come across as one who makes up stories. Neither was Trafficante. So that is why when Ragano reveals what was told him by Trafficante about Hoffa's and JFK's murders, accounts which jive with other and most prevelant thoughts about those killings, I think he can be taken at his word. Clearly, it should come as no suprise that the Mafia was involved in those murders. And while not much is added to details of JFK's assassination, the death of Hoffa is clearly related, including the names of the triggermen and who ordered the hit.
Unlike some mob-insider accounts I have read, where the subject's integrity is of little worth and the story sometimes hard to swallow, 'Mob Lawyer' is both profound, soul searching and entertaining.

Book Description
"I heard you paint houses" are the first words Jimmy Hoffa ever spoke to Frank "the Irishman" Sheeran. To paint a house is to kill a man. The paint is the blood that splatters on the walls and floors. In the course of nearly five years of recorded interviews Frank Sheeran confessed to Charles Brandt that he handled more than twenty-five hits for the mob, and for his friend Hoffa. Sheeran learned to kill in the U.S. Army, where he saw an astonishing 411 days of active combat duty in Italy during World War II. After returning home he became a hustler and hit man, working for legendary crime boss Russell Bufalino. Eventually he would rise to a position of such prominence that in a RICO suit then-U.S. Attorney Rudy Giuliani would name him as one of only two non-Italians on a list of 26 top mob figures. When Bufalino ordered Sheeran to kill Hoffa, he did the deed, knowing that if he had refused he would have been killed himself. Sheeran's important and fascinating story includes new information on other famous murders, and provides rare insight to a chapter in American history. Charles Brandt has written a page-turner that is destined to become a true crime classic.
Customer Reviews:
Could it really be true?.......2007-10-22
A transcribed version of Sheeran's life and times, including his years as Hoffas batman. Some of the book is a little too hard to belive, but why doubt a dying confession? As with many "true stories" the time lines and evidence are often contradict each other, and this book is no exception. From his duties during WWII, to the plot to kill Kennedy, then the plane trip to Michigan the book appears to be more fiction than fact. The one true fact to remember is that Frank Sheeran was a real member of Jimmy Hoffas Inner circle. The only way to finally put the Hoffa story to rest will be to find the body, and if this story is true, that may well be unlikely. It is still a good read and very well written, and that is what every true crime author aims for.
chilling.......2007-07-03
A depressingly credible and compulsively readable tale of a hit man. While most attention has gone to his role in the Hoffa hit, this is only one in the long litany of crimes, at levels high and low, laid out in the book.
This book depressed the daylights out of me, as it paints a picture of a thoroughly corrupt world, with bags of cash flowing at all levels. It also paints a picture of a man who (I think from his WWII experiences) placed no value on human life - he treats murder as like plumbing - just another day at the office.
Finally, one note that did make me question things a bit - Sheeran says he carries a heavy bag ("musta weighed 100 pounds") of cash to John Mitchell in a hotel lobby. Mitchell then picks up the bag and walks away. 60-something John Mitchell is going to nonchalantly carry a 100 pound bag? And forget about the weight - why would John Mitchell do something like this in person?
I really really hope a lot of things in this book are exaggerations/lies, otherwise boy is it depressing.
I Heard You Paint Houses.......2007-05-07
"I Heard You Paint Houses": Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran & Closing the Case on Jimmy Hoffa I found this book very interesting to say the least. I enjoy a book that raises questions about history.
Mafia Books.......2007-05-07
This book was very interesting and factual. Well written and recommended for those who enjoy reading about the Mafia and the disapppearance of Jimmy Hoffa.
I HEARD YOU PAINT HOUSES.......2007-01-16
I find this book to be very intriguing. Easy to follow along with plot
as it unfolds. I never would have imagined, the name of the book would
uncover but happend to Jimmy Hoffa.

Tears & Tiers is both a touching and disturbing fifty year mosaic depicting the Life & Times of Joseph "Mad Dog" Sullivan, Bank Robber, Escape Artisit (the only man to escape the infamous Attica prison) and notorious Hitman. While this never boring saga delves into his youthful years and forty-five years in prison to date, a hideous portrait of life within the walls. It also touches on his involvement with some past icons of our times such as Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Hoffa, and anothony "Fat Tony" Salerno, Boss of New York's Genovese crime family. Writen by Gail Sullivan his wife of over thirty years, while a great read Sullivan's life as such is not one you would wish upon anyone you hold dear.

What an awesome read!!! Finally, the sleeping bull awakens to let the rest of us know his true story. Gail throws it all at us and Joe holds no punches. Be prepared for intrigue, brutal honesty, and blunt in your face challenges. Joe, though destined to die in prison, is more alive and perceptive than ever. Told through Gail, Joe's story will have you laughing, crying and empathizing. What would terrify us is his world and experiences, but even he sees that world with the truth that it is. Not only a fine biography, but a great lesson in rough justice and one man's journey as a notorious hitman...He now in his 60s has been locked in a box, but still reaches out to us, not for glory or fame, but to show all that can go bad in a life and how to avoid a similar fate...EXCELLENT BOOK...

INCREDIBLE.......1999-01-27
Tells the truth about Hoffa's life. I would read it before or after reading about Robert Kennedy, to see both sides. He very clearly states his beliefs, and he does what's right. He admits he's no angel, but he has an admirable character. I would recommend it to everyone to read completely and thoroughly.

Good Book A Little Dry.......2006-03-24
This was a interesting book, but it can come of a little dry ecspecially at the end. It is just Bobby Kennedy's version of how the committee got started and what happened.I was interested on both sides of the story so I'm also reading Jimmy Hoffa's autobiography which goes into the comittee as well. It's amazing how Bobby can makes some of the statments about crime that he does with the Kennedy's being so crooked themselves??
A Great Inside Look.......2002-11-16
This is a marvelous peek inside Robert Kennedy's efforts against corrupt labor unions. I had long been intrigued with the whole RFK-Jimmy Hoffa "feud," so this was a treat for me. Robert Kennedy's writing style is at once humorous and pragmatic. He provides a detailed account of the inner workings of the McClellan Committee. Moreover, he meticulously describes the corruption within the labor organizations, with particular emphasis on Jimmy Hoffa. A word of warning: When I use words like "detailed" and "meticulously," I'm being serious. The book is a must for anyone interested in RFK, Jimmy Hoffa, the McClellan Committee, or American labor history; but someone who wants an action movie packaged as a book, will probably be disillusioned. Having said that, I loved the book. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
In Hoffa, Arthur Sloane has written the only comprehensive biography of the late Teamster leader, having had full access to Jimmy Hoffa's family, friends, and professional associates. Hoffa is a rich and colorful portrait of this powerful and contradictory character, one of the most influential figures in American labor. It covers in considerable detail all the facets of Hoffa's remarkable life and death; his rise to total dominance over the largest, strongest, and wealthiest union in American history; his near-Victorian personal habits; the legal problems that plagued his later years; and, of course, the shadowy events surrounding his presumed Mafia murder in 1975.
Arthur A. Sloane is Professor of Industrial Relations at the University of Delaware.
Customer Reviews:
A must for Union organizers.......1999-10-02
Sloane takes us on a journey through Hoffa's life. From his early childhood, to the end. Sloane spends time on Hoffa's relationship with Ferral Dobbs and the tactics and strategies that he learned in Minneapolis that Made Hoffa one of the most effective Union organizers of all time. This book literally cuts through the crap and vilification and shows Hoffa the man, the Union organizer, and the Union leader. A must read

The Tangled Web: The Life and Death of Richard Cain - Chicago Cop and Mafia Hitman
ASIN: 0873515803 |
Book Description
On a spring day in 1961, over-the-road trucker Jim Harper was en route from Mauston, Wisconsin, to his home in Minneapolis. At 70 miles per hour, with a combined 60,000 pounds of man, machine, and material, he approached a curve along the Great River Road and hit the brakes. The tractor-trailer didn’t slow. Harper’s brake lines had been cut.
In preceding months, Harper had led an insurgency in his Teamsters’ Local 544 to clean up corruption among its leaders. His efforts drew the attention of none other than Jimmy Hoffa, at the time focused on securing his right to lead the national Teamsters organization without government intervention.
Jim Harper had his reasons for confronting his local’s leadership—a hardscrabble childhood and a stint in Angola prison had left him seeking redemption, and Jimmy Hoffa had publicly called for union reform. But Hoffa, under federal investigation for questionable financial dealings, had deep, dark secrets; the last thing he needed was a spotlight on Minneapolis. Despite the increasing threats to his life and those of his young family, Harper continued to press his case.
In this fascinating account, Harper’s son traces the interwoven paths of these two men—a criminal icon and a determined vigilante—from their formative years through their unbelievable face-off.
Steven J. Harper has been a litigation partner in the international law firm of Kirkland & Ellis LLP for more than twenty years and has tried civil cases to judges and juries throughout the country. This is his first book.
Customer Reviews:
Crossing Hoffa.......2007-08-23
A very riveting book that drips with a son's respect and admiration for his father's crusade for reform in a notorious and corrupt Teamster chapter. The author's father stands toe-to-toe with Hoffa and risks all.
Fantastic read.......2007-08-20
Great reading as the author, with his litigation experience, puts the pieces togethet of the story so that all the facts are represented and the story flows. Even though I knew the outcome, I was still pulling for the dad to muscle out and be the victor against Mr. Hoffa. Besides the story about his father, what a wonderful way to remember your childhood thru the eyes of your father.
Intriguing story with a meaningful message.......2007-08-04
This is an extremely well-written book that will appeal to all! Harper's story of one man (the author's father) reminds us of what really matters in one's life - being true to who you are. In the telling of his father's intriguing story, the author illustrates to us that we need not be afraid of life's setbacks and obstacles for they can be used to build personal strength, character, and wisdom, and expand our empathy, acceptance and love of others. Harper's exceptional writing style results in one of those rare books that leaves you feeling like you were there -- "But by the grace of God go I...." And regardless of the dark places our life's journey might take us, it is never too late to leave our legacy --especially when it is built on on love and honor. A fascinating and moving true story --a must-read.
Crossing Hoffa.......2007-06-29
This is a very well written book that tells a compelling story of two men's lives and how they intersect. It has the feel of a good mystery novel and, even though the phrase is trite, really is hard to put down. The reader gets drawn into the story immediately and is carried along from page to page in anticipation of what will happen next. If you enjoy reading any subject matter at all, you'll enjoy this book.

The Hoffa Wars - The Rise And Fall Of Jimmy Hoffa.
"The Hoffa Wars" is the controversial and critically acclaimed masterwork of investigative journalism on the corruption-riddled Teamster Union.
This was the first book to present the case that Teamster's general president Jimmy Hoffa and two Mafia figures, Carlos Marcello and Santos Trafficante, might have arranged and executed the assassination of President Kennedy - a conclusion the U.S. House Select Committee on Assassinations came to a year later in its final report!
"The Hoffa Wars" delivers the inside stories on:
Hoffa's rise to power from local organizer to Teamsters general president.
Hoffa's role in the CIA-Mafia plots against Castro.
How and why Hoffa, Carlos Marcello, and Santos Trafficante plotted to kill President Kennedy.

"I Heard You Paint Houses": Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran & Closing the Case on Jimmy Hoffa
ASIN: 0786269669 |
Book Description
A New York Times Bestseller
This fascinating account of a dark side of American history takes its title from the first words Jimmy Hoffa spoke to Frank Sheeran; to paint a house is to kill a man. But the book is about far more than killing. It is a rich cultural history told from the inside - a riveting read that is likely to become a true crime classic. And it introduces to the reading public Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran, a figure as ruthless and as fascinating as a mob legend can be.
Customer Reviews:
The guy who killed Hoffa.......2007-07-09
This is the guy who kiled Hoffa and the author lets him spak int he 1st person and adds narrative to it along the way. At first, I was going to put this book down, but I kept going and found it to be an excelent account of life during those times. Some very nasty people accounted here.
The Hoffa Disappearance and more........2007-04-10
The print in this book is large as advertised. This hard cover has a good, sturdy binding.
It's a smooth flowing read.Sheeran's words are in quotations while Brandt's words are in bold type.
The Prologue in this book lays the groundwork for how Frank Sheeran eventually came to confess his involvement in the Hoffa disappearance.
He explains why there would be no body to recover and how trusted people close to Jimmy Hoffa had to be involved.
The information in this book verifies information in other mafia related books that I have read.
Some examples:
Hoffa's claim to possess audio sex tapes involving Bobby Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe.
Joe Kennedy recruiting Sam Giancana to steal the 1960 Presidential election.
Multiple mafia figures and their involvment in the assassination of John F Kennedy.
A lot of the organised crime figures in this book are mentioned in most JFK assassination books.
It's interesting that Frank Sheeran claimed that he deilvered three rifles to David Ferrie in Baltimore shortly before the assassination.
Jimmy Hoffa strenuously opposed the mafia's aiding Kennedy in the election. He was right in the end.
The Nixon administration's corruption was detailed.
One of the bigger contributing factors in Jimmy Hoffa's murder was the access to Teamster funds.Hoffa apparently was not as lenient as Frank Fitzsimmons in collecting debts.
This book is believable to me.Each individual reader will have to assess for themselves whether this book is credible.
It's one of the best mafia related books that I have read so far.
