5 out of 5 stars A Helping Hand I found.......2007-06-11

I needed guidance after writing my fictional novel, The Skye in June, and this book help soothe my fears that I would never be published. Suggestions and examples of how to write a proposal, inquiry letter and so much industry information are included. Ease your worries if you are planning on being published - or self publish, and read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Book is good, publishing biz is bad.......2006-11-20

After reading several revews, I can say that the problem is not Jeff Herman's book, but the publishing business itself. My comments are really about non-fiction but there is some truth in this for fiction writers as well. I used his book to send query letters, found an agent, my agent sold my book--but the advance is so tiny I can't afford to write the book. I'm single, I'm not going to inherit anything, I'm not a trust fund kid, and my book was apparently deemed less important than a celebrity tell-all. My advice? Be smart if you want to earn a living writing. Follow the example of that writer who spent FIFTEEN YEARS writing a bioghraphy of J.P. Morgan because her advance was so generous. And she lived off of the advance in New York City, no les! Why did she write about J.P.? Because she admired him? Had some experience in investing? Knew him personally? No, no, no. She wrote about him because all the Wall Street guys who will buy the book hoping to become rich like J.P. did are the reason her advance was so large. Publishing is a business, plain and simple.

4 out of 5 stars Help for those who might be helped .......2005-11-11

This guide will be bought by far more people who will not be helped by it , than who will be helped by it. The great majority including myself will look for the magical way to find the agent, the editor who will want and accept their writing. They will learn the right way to do this, the right way to write a proposal. But having learned all that they will probably not succeed in having their manuscript published.
Beyond this , those who can be eternally grateful to Jeff Herman for providing the formula for success, are those who actually will have a book published. For the overwhelming majority of them this will not bring honor, fame, wealth in anything at all like their secret hope and expectation. If not publishing is a disappointment, then publishing may even be a bigger one.
Nonetheless, we all live by hope. This book is clearly written, instructs the fledgling writer on the way to make it in the world.
It is one of the most popular of these guides, and has helped make at least one person's fortune i.e. Jeff Herman.

5 out of 5 stars Take it from a best-selling author of 12 books: You can use this book!.......2005-08-30

Every year or two I buy an updated copy of Mr. Herman's book, and it's always a great investment.

I sell most of my books to publishers, directly. Perhaps 6 of my 12 books were sold to individuals I found in Herman's editions.

Herman's book provides me with an up-to-date listing of editors who can acquire my titles, along with their phone numbers, and topical interests.

I can't tell you how much time his research saves me, especially when I'm shopping an idea for a new project.

If you want to sell something, it pays to have a great, "smart" list, and that's what Herman's book provides.

And you should know this--I sell my books by telephone, first, and then follow-up with written material--contrary to Herman's advice. But then you'd expect as much from the best-selling author of REACH OUT & SELL SOMEONE and YOU CAN SELL ANYTHING BY TELEPHONE!

Book Description

Getting to feel at home in a new country

Yoon’s name means Shining Wisdom, and when she writes it in Korean, it looks happy, like dancing figures. But her father tells her that she must learn to write it in English. In English, all the lines and circles stand alone, which is just how Yoon feels in the United States. Yoon isn’t sure that she wants to be YOON. At her new school, she tries out different names – maybe CAT or BIRD. Maybe CUPCAKE!

Helen Recorvits’s spare and inspiring story about a little girl finding her place in a new country is given luminous pictures filled with surprising vistas and dreamscapes by Gabi Swiatkowska.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Addition the School Library.......2005-09-20

This book is a great ice breaker for those first few days of school. The story is well written, and beautifully illustrated.
Young students can relate to the character, Yoon, on many levels.

5 out of 5 stars What's in a name? Letters, I s'pose. .......2005-08-02

In 2001 a book came out entitled, "The Name Jar" about a girl from Korea who had moved to America and wanted an Americanized name. Then, in 2003, "My Name Is Yoon" came out with practically the same plot. Normally, I have little sympathy for children's books that mimic their predecessors. In this case, however, there can be little doubt as to which book is the better of the two. "My Name Is Yoon", is a complex tale of imagination, flights of fancy, and gradual acceptance. By contrast, "The Name Jar" was simply okay. You can find ho-hum picture books lining the shelves of most libraries and bookstores around the globe. It is far rarer to find books quite as remarkable as the stunning, "Yoon".

Yoon isn't exactly thrilled to be in America. Wherever she looks, she sees that life is different in this strange new land. In Korea, where Yoon was born, her name meant Shining Wisdom. Despite her father's assurances that it means the same thing here, Yoon isn't so sure. And then there's the fact that when she writes her name using English characters, it's just a series of sticks and circles, whereas in Korean, "The symbols dance together". She's right. They do. Yoon carries her unhappiness to school where each day she learns a new word and makes that her name. One day it's cat. Another it's bird. Still another (and most amusingly) it's cupcake. In the end, Yoon learns to like her new country, supposing perhaps that maybe that being different can be good too. And in the end, she embraces her real name. "It still means Shining Wisdom".

I hate summarizing picture books where the plot, when written down, sounds so much hokier than it feels on the page. What I've just written sounds nice but bland. The book is anything but bland. Yoon's a distinct and remarkable character. With each new name she adopts, she becomes that object in her dreams. For example, when she becomes BIRD she wishes she could fly back to Korea once again. The book also skips what I've come to feel is the obligatory foreign-child-gets-teased sequence. The kind of thing you tend to find in books like, "Molly's Pilgrim". I was grateful for the oversight. "My Name Is Yoon" is tackling more important problems here. The acceptance of one's own self in a foreign environment, for example. Becoming your own name. Becoming your own self. What could be greater than this?

The pictures, for their part, don't hurt. Artist Gabi Swiatkowska is perhaps best known for this book and the title, "Silk Umbrellas" by Carolyn Marsden. "My Name Is Yoon" is good as a story, yes. But the Yoon we see here is a complex original human being. A one-of-a-kind gal. When her imagination soars it takes off like nothing else, aided by Swiatkowska's realistic images. I especially liked looking at the pictures of her in her home. Here, the black and white tiles of the floor bend and twist in strangely surreal patterns. I'll be honest with you, though. The book could've been awful and I still would have loved it just so long as it continued to contain the picture of Yoon floating through her classroom window as a delicious fluffy cupcake.

Realism is what grounds "My Name Is Yoon". Surrealism sets it apart from the rabble. If you're stocking your personal library with only the most essential picture books out there, you'd be doing yourself a disservice not to include this truly delightful title.

5 out of 5 stars Great illiustrations, great message.......2005-05-01

This is a wonderful story about a young Korean girl who has moved to America with her family. At school when she write her name Yoon in English for the first time, she decides that she likes her Korean characters more than the English version because, "My name looks happy in Korean. The symbols dance together."

She decides that she would like to go back to Korea because everything is different in America. Every day at school, her nice teacher asks her to write her name on a paper, and Yoon instead writes a different word that she has recently learned. The beautiful illustrations go along with these words, showing Yoon as a bird, cat, and cupcake. In the end Yoon realizes that perhaps America will be a good home, and that, "maybe different is good."

A great story for children to read, to aid in understanding and acceptance.

5 out of 5 stars Young Immigrants Featured Review.......2004-12-06

Immigrant kids recognize that hesitation during roll call when a new teacher gets to their name. I used to dread it, but the experience depended on how a grownup handled these encounters with the unfamiliar. If only all teachers (and immigrant parents) were as wise as the ones in this book! Recorvits' poetic, spare text and Swiatkowska's imaginative paintings explore one aspect of feeling "foreign" -- an immigrant child's name. In a new language and a new alphabet, Yoon's beautiful Korean name seems foreign even to herself. Are you still "Yoon" when people outside the family pronounce your name differently? When they don't know that it means "shining wisdom?" For a child to feel at home in a new country, she needs a loving circle of teachers, parents, and classmates, as well as a good measure of her own courage. Reading My Name is Yoon might compensate somewhat if any of those crucial ingredients are missing.

5 out of 5 stars Mischievous and fun.......2004-04-13

Mischievous, Korean-born Yoon deals with starting school and learning English. She likes her name in Korean. It means shining wisdom. She is not so sure she likes YOON, her name written in English. The illustrations are stark, rich, and playful. Karen Woodworth Roman, East Asian Children's Books

Book Description

Following the publication of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace and Dreaming War comes award-winning Gore Vidal's long-awaited conclusion to his landmark, best-selling trilogy. Now, Vidal has written his most devastating exploration of Imperial America to date. "Not since the 1846 attack on Mexico in order to seize California" Vidal writes, "has an American government been so nakedly predatory." Bush's apparent invincibility, and what he might or might not know—especially about those new "black box" voting machines being installed all over the country—is one of the central themes of "State of the Union 2004," a magnificent and witty Olympian survey of American Empire, where the war on terror is judged as nonsensical as the "war on dandruff," where America is an "Enron-Pentagon prison," a land of ballooning budget deficits thanks to the growth of a garrison state, tax cuts for the privileged, and the creeping totalitarianism of the Ashcroft justice department. Collected in this volume are Vidal's earlier State of the Union addresses, a tradition inaugurated on the David Susskind show in the early seventies as a counterpoint to "whoever happened to be president."

5 out of 5 stars A Real Patriot.......2007-08-18

Mr. Gore has an in depth and uncanny view of American Politics and he is right on. Would that we could have leaders such as Mr. Gore running the Country. I can only dream of what could have been while I suffer the ineptitude and greed of modern day politicians. We need more like Mr. Gore who can stir the masses and demand change.

5 out of 5 stars I'm a Believer.......2007-06-01

I'm over 55 and I thought I knew about our government and about Gore Vidal. 40 years ago, I dismissed him as a "queer", as he was called by William F. Buckley. Big mistake.

I don't believe everything I read and I'm not easily impressed. But after reading "Imperial America", now I'm a believer in what Gore Vidal has been saying for a very long time- that America is no longer a Republic, but an Empire and that the interests of "The People" do not drive our elected officials.

This book will make you feel like the wool the government has been pulling over your eyes for the past 50 years is 50% dacron!

Required reading for every concerned American- I wonder how many are out there.

4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2007-04-12

It seems almost inevitable that associated with every fact is a level of fiction. So rather than argue "the facts" or regurgitate them, let us instead argue their relevancy to the state of American society today. In that vein, this book was personally very relevant. Although I fail to agree with every problem cited and/or proposals for their solution, I wholeheartedly agree with its overall assessment for our malaise.

This book expresses an intelligent and insightful perspective of our state of American governance. To ignore this message because we do not agree with all it says or how it says it does us a disservice. Even though three quarters of the book is composed of articles published during the eighties, I feel collectively that they are no less relevant today then they were then. Reading this book has broadened my perspective and I encourage everyone to read it.

4 out of 5 stars In a word...Brilliant !!.......2007-03-19

Gore Vidal does a brilliant job at pointing out how our "Republic" has turned into an Empire as expansive and militaristic as Rome in the first century and Britain in the nineteenth. He has a keen eye and is a wonderful observer. It is amazing that more Americans will not wake up and smell the coffee. Face it, America is an Empire! America is the 21st century Rome! And Mr. Vidal does a fantastic job at describing and detailing how we have arrived at as the Empire that we are.
However, there is one discrepancy that I have with Mr. Vidal's thesis. Mr. Vidal, who is very patriotic, does his best to try and explain ways in which the American Empire can return to a Republic. In other words, he does a good job at explaining that the world is round (that America is an Empire)but still has the attitude that it is flat (that is still Republic in spirit and will become a Republic once again). I believe that the American Empire will fall very soon - within a matter of five years - as the Prophet Joseph Smith predicted in Nauvoo. I believe that the only stable institution that can and will survive the coming anarchy (see Robert D. Kaplan's book) is the theocratic Kingdom of God (see my personal portfolio). As Francois-Marie Arouet, Voltaire, said it best, "I disagree with what comes out of you pen, but I would defend to the death your right to write it."
As I said before, I believe that Mr. Vidal does a great job at defining that America is an Empire, but that is it. I think that it is too late for the American Empire. It will crash and burn HARD! Mind you, I did not say the people. I believe completely that the people living in the American Empire, and the people in the rest of the world for that matter, can easily repent and return to Jesus Christ the Lord.
So all in all, a great observation on the American Empire. Four out of five stars.

5 out of 5 stars "Power Corrupts, and Abosolute Power Corrupts Absolutely.......2007-02-22

Gore Vidal's anthology titled IMPERIAL AMERICA is an anthology of essays written between 1980s and c. 2004. While these essays may seem dated to those with short memories, the theme of unbridled power, media lying, and the outer limits of hypocrisy are the same even though the "actors" are different.

Vidal cites historical anecdotes and comments from the Founding Fathers about the perils of political power. According to Vidal, American drive toward imperial power and central power began with the Civil War or the War of Southern Secession or the War of Southern Independence. The basic synamic of this war was that Northern Bankers made considerale money and have ever since became more greedy and powerful.

Vidal's description of the Spanish-American War includes the bloody suppression of the people of the Phillipines who were promised independence in 1898 only to have such promises and oaths revoked. The subsequent war of suppression which probably lasted from 1898 to 1902 costing over 200,000 lives.

Vidal's description of the Cold War is as clear a presentation of trends and events as this reviewer has read. What U.S. authorities could have gained by policy, they tried to get by military force. Vidal explains that the reasons for this use of force was/is to enhance arms executives, oil executives, and bankers at the expense of U.S. taxpayers.

Many times U.S. citizens are not alert to the "Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace" trends because journalists and yes, historians repeat the same distortions and lies. Due to corportate executives controlling newpapers and other media sources, journalists, and academicians have "sold their soul" to please corporate masters and bankers. If one reflects on sensationalist news stories for the past 60 years, he/she will discover that most of these stories were lies, exaggerations, and distoritions. When some honest historians corrected any of these distoritions, the corrections got little or no attention. Or, anyone who made such an honest effort was badly smeared by "offical panals" of liars in the absence of the person in question. In fact, this is exactly what happened to Vidal himself. The montior of the panal was Roger Mudd (Mud?) who made all sorts of accusations against Vidal when Vidal was not on the panal to defend himself. The fact is Roger Mudd is a coward.

Vidal gives clear evidence of unbridled power and hypocrisy. He also suggests means of ending the corrpution of a centralized police state. He suggests a return to the concept of federalism and uses the examle of the Swiss. Notice the Swiss stay out of war and have high living standards. Vidal suggests that U.S. citizens could locate in areas that satisfy their cultural and social preferences.

One feature of Vidal's essays that should catch readers' attention is his criticism of the U.S. Supreme Court justices whom Vidal accuses of giving legal sanction to what is otherwise illegal and unconstitutional. This trend has only accelerated since the 1980s, and Vidal presents brief but concise explanations of these Supreme Court decisions.

While some may think some of these essays are redundant, they need to be. Those with short memories need repeated reminders of serious problems or, as the subtitle of the book reads REFLCETIONS ON THE UNITED STATES OF AMNESIA. Vidals depth of knowledge and writing style make these essays well worth reading.

Society does not make it easy for young people, regardless of their sexual orientation, to find accurate, nonjudgmental information about homosexuality. It makes it even more difficult for young homosexuals to find positive role models in fiction either written or published expressly for them or - if published for adults - relevant to them and their lives. This book examines these issues and critically evaluates the body of literature published for young adults that offers homosexual themes and characters.

I purchased this book to use for my MA thesis on lesbian YA literature, and I can't say enough about how helpful a resource it is. The annotated bibliography alone is worth the price of the book.

2004 NFL Record & Fact Book

I have never felt a need to purchase a statistic book. When I received one for my birthday I was obligated to open it. Well, to my surprise I was fascinated with the records that the NFL has kept. I am an avid NFL fan. (Green Bay Packers) When I scanned some of the records, the who's who of football greats started popping up. Walter Payton, Jim Brown and Vince Lombardi to name a few. I knew I had great book for my collection.

The book is broken down quite well into easy access information. The 2004 events are listed first. Schedule, Post season and nationally televised games, Scheduling formula, NFL active statistical leaders, coaches records, What to look for in 2004, 2004 Draft list, Tie breaking procedures and then each individual team is broken down in detail.

      Each team is deciphered by:
      * Club officials-owner on down to front office personal with
      historical background of each person
      * Coaches-Head coach and assistant coaches' history.
      * Stadium-Capacity, playing surface and training camp location.
      * Individual stats in 2003.
      * Rosters

The next notable chapter is the 2003 year in review: Trades, week by week results, players of the week and month, team and individual stats, best performance and attendances.

The next chapter is for the betting public looking for any edge to lay the line. Inside the Numbers includes records of teams on the road from 1970 to 2003, bye weeks-team record after and monthly record win percentage per team from 1994 to 2003. These are just the numbers no predictions here.

Other chapters include: Pro Football Hall of Fame, Chronology of Professional Football, All time team vs. team results, Super Bowl summaries, Monday night records, Thursday-Sunday night, First round selection history and Records-all time and team/individual. Here you will find names like Rock Island Independents, Columbus Pan Handles, Tonawanda Kardex and Cleveland Indians. (Yes, Cleveland was an NFL team for those MLB baseball fans.) Of notable quiz show highlights: Jim Thorpe was the first NFL Commissioner for one year. (1920)

And last and most subject to interpretation are the Rules of the game. The roster of officials (Includes day job), Official Signals with illustrations and the Digest of Rules.
Notable highlights are the jurisdiction, positions and duties of each official. Definitions of official's words like impetus, muff and chucking.

Since we are on the subject of NFL rules, the most controversial rule pass interference is dissected like no other. Underlined words are for stressing to the public what to look for while watching games I think. The pass interference rule has five additional notes. These notes break down certain incidents that could occur on each play and what to look for. After reading the pass interference rules a couple times through I am still confused! What is true of most written rules applies here "what is written and how it is interpreted by each individual is always different."

This book should be in all NFL fan's collection. It is a NFL official publication, so you can rely on the facts. All that is left is to sit back and enjoy the best game on the planet.

And don't forget the referee is the final authority for rule interpretations.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate NFL reference book.......2004-09-11

I found the National Football League's annual Record and Fact Book to be a lot more than just the league's media guide. Sure, the book is the official source for NFL statistics and minutia; however, I also find the book is actually a good read.

Of particular interest is the History section, which gives you a short, year-by-year summary of pro football from Pudge Heffelfinger, the first pro football player, all the way to last year's Super Bowl-winning firld goal by Adam Vinitieri of the New England Patriots.

You won't find a detailed, mind-nimbing socio-economic analysis of the effects if the NFL on the nation's GDP; nor will you find a lot of negativity abouy the league's problems - after all, this is an NFL publication. However, the league takes great pains to give you a reader-friendly set of the rules (thank God for that alone, it's won me a few wagers) and the records, including separate pages detailing the careers of some of the greatest players who played the game.

There's also a very good outline of the members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and also historical data on the league's competitors over the years (did you know that there have been upwards of a half-dozen versions of the American Football League?).

Overall, there are some sections that you might look through only once in a year; but there are also sections where you can lose yourself in the game simply by taking what's there on the pafe and using your imagination to make the numbers leap off the page. Yeah, maybe I wax a little poetic about the stats in the book, but any true football fanatic knoes that the numbers all tell a story; it's up to the reader to make that story come to life. This book is comprehensive enough to be considered complete, yet spacious enough to allow you to tell yourself the story of the NFL in your own words.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2004-08-20

Published yearly this book is a great resource for every NFL fan. I can't tell you how many times a season I pull this book out while watching an NFL game. It contains information on all 32 teams, almost EVERY single game, regular season, post season, Super Bowl, and career NFL record you could think of. Also included is an overview of the rules and regulations of the league. It is a very handy guide for all NFL fans.

One small piece of advice: If you have last year's book, you may not feel the need to buy another, there isn't much new material added from year to year (though at such a cheap price it may be worth it). I would definitely recommend the book though if you don't know any previous versions, or if your version is more than 2 or 3 years old.

3 out of 5 stars don't buy this book by mistake.......2005-05-07

I bought this book by mistake, and I want to warn others to think before buying. It's not a bad book. That's not the problem. Let me explain.

A friend of mine had this book that I found really engaging and I wanted my own copy. I mixed up the titles and got this book by mistake, not realizing that there were two books with almost identical titles. The book I most highly recommend is THE RED SOX FAN HANDBOOK. It is by Leigh Grossman.

The name of this book is THE BOSTON RED SOX FAN BOOK. It is by four authors. Despite this one having four authors, and the Fan Handbook having just one, the Fan Handbook has four times as much information. It also costs a few dollars more.

This book (Fan Book) has lots of space-fillers, most of them seemingly copied right out of the Red Sox Media Guide, even to using the same style of type presentation in the records section. There's nothing wrong with this book per se. It's easier to read that the Red Sox Media Guide, though with much less detail. But it's just sort of lightweight.

The Fan Handbook's best feature are the individual player profiles. It has a couple of hundred pages - the heart of the book - which presents very readable profiles of most of the key players in Red Sox history, right up to present players like Abe Alvarez, who's pitched all of one game so far. It's a great deal of fun, and well worth the few extra dollars. Trust me, if you placed the two books side by side, you wouldn't hesitate.

This book can help a youngster understand the purpose of learning a sport and pushing a little harder than usual. My grandson finally realized why he was swimming laps and has helped him be a better swimmer. He's to young to read "Under the Surface" by himself, but he will grow into that book also.

Produced by The Sporting News, The Official Major League Baseball Fact Book is a treasure trove for baseball fans. Compiling a rather stunning amount of information, it provides a detailed review of the most recent season, a preview of the current season, profiles of current and former baseball stars, a season-by-season review from 1876 to the present, and a section on all-time leaders in various statistical categories. As an example of the book's comprehensiveness, on the page about the Detroit Tigers you'll find the team roster; the season schedule; lists of coaches, scouts, trainers, and physicians; the field dimensions of Comerica Park; ticket information; the director of merchandising, for crying out loud--and a lot more. There's also a complete list of recent transactions, an exhaustive catalog of Hall of Famers, franchise histories, and box scores from memorial games (one of the best parts of the book). Great stuff, and it includes lots of photos. --Andy Boynton

2 out of 5 stars Facts Need Checking.......2005-03-14

I have enjoyed previous issues of this book but I bought the current one expecting, as a Red Sox fan, the descriptions of the scoring of the playoff games and the play by play of the World Series. Unfortunately many innings were missing and the scores were not always accurate.
The descriptions of the batting leaders for 2004 were also mistitled. It is too bad that an otherwise valuable record book was issued too hastily without checking the facts.

5 out of 5 stars Statistics repository for the 2003 season, a great resource!.......2004-09-27

Now that the 2004 season is basically over, this book will be outdated very quickly, but look for future versions! I remember picking a copy up in the bookstore for the first time and being simply amazed by how much information was contained within its pages!

The Official MLB Fact Book (2004 Edition) includes an overwhelming supply of individual and team stats for the 2003 stats, plus postseason box scores, and list after list of baseball greats including award winners, league leaders, record holders, and hall of famers.

I used to rely only on each yearly edition of The Sporting News Record Book for updated statistics, but beginning with 2004, I may have found a better alternative.

      3 out of 5 stars A Baseball Almanac Source.......2003-06-03

Our inspiration for Baseball Almanac ... began with The Baseball Encyclopedia. Our source for the team by team section was inspired by this one book which we have purchased every year since 1999 and STILL keep on our shelf side-by-side. Three stars because there are a few historical errors (-1 star), all of which I've written to them about, and not enough data for the average fan (-1 star). Though only a "fact book", it leaves you wanting more...
