How It All Began is the personal testimony of Michael "Bommi" Baumann, a man who, in the late 1960s and early '70s, was a member of the June 2nd Movement, one of the most spectacular urban guerrilla organizations in West Berlin.Of this book, Baumann said: "Others should understand why people take the road of armed struggle, how they come to it, how the seeds are planted, and what the emotions behind it are, what kind of considerations and psychic preconditions are needed to overcome the fear involved."
But Baumann, ultimately, had to make a choice: between violence and resistance. He renounced violence when he left the June 2nd Movement in 1972.
The original German edition, Wie Alles Anfing, was seized by security police when it appeared in 1975. The resulting trial and publicity raised an international outcry and the book ended up beng republished in German and translated into six languages.
In an age of public protestsagainst corporate greed, against free trade agreements, and for social justice–How It All Began provides a fascinating glimpse into the thinking behind urban struggle, and the consequences of action.
As Baumann himself said, "Violence is a perfectly adequate means, I never had any hangups about it."
The first English version of How It All Began was published by Arsenal in 1977 and updated in 1981. Long out of print, it has been re-issued with a new cover, making it available to readers once again.

Destroying What Destroys You.......2003-10-19
Perhaps one of the most important nonfiction books of the Cold War, "How It All Began" is the rare story from the terrorist's unapologetic point of view.
The June 2nd Movement that Michael Baumann took part in and writes about was a product of its times; its members were bored students and hippies, tired of the paranoia of a culture focused solely on not being communist. In 1969, news of American college rebellions and "love-ins" flowed into Germany and ignited a youth culture. At the same time, news of wars and global chaos ignited youth activism. The young Germans who objected to the Vietnam war did so as strongly as their counterparts in the States--though, of course, to even lesser effect.
Baumann writes that the resulting frustration made it easy to protest a little more strongly against the status quo, to take more aggressive actions. Vandalism here, arson there--and frighteningly soon, loose groups became tight-knit commando cells; students like Baumann became specialists in bomb-building, napalm, and burglary. The West German government was only too happy to match the terrorist actions with raids, secret police tactics, beatings, and torture.
Who was right? No one, of course; in a society where people have learned to respond to violence with more violence, then questions of motive and justification soon fall by the wayside. The motto of Baumann's movement, "destroy what destroys you," perfectly characterizes the irony of the situation, describing a viscous circle that entraps all of the combatants.
The idea that Baumann would eventually walk away from all this, that he could found more promise in love than in hate, is the most remarkable part of the book. It's not a novel idea, of course, except that it's real remorse, real willingness towards good coming from a mire of confused evil. All of this actually happened. So cliche or not, I was glad to rediscover that good can win, that people can change--and I was glad to find this book.
I won't debate whether this book is relevant to today. Personally, I think it is.
Note: Baumann was arrested in London in 1981. There is no record of him anywhere after that date. He effectively disappeared.
going to the left.......2000-11-19
Great book describing how a disgrutled german youth goes from being a grumbler to a bomb thrower. he goes from vandalizing expensive cars yelling "walk to work" to bombing police stations. well written, first person account interview style. it drives me nuts it's so hard to find. last time i interlibrary loaned it it came from ten states away. anyone who knows which way the wind blows needs to read this book.

Great history, great recipes.......2006-10-12
In his quarterly newsletter, Robert Stanek, author of "The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches" and many other books for young people, regularly features the books of new and upcoming authors as well as his favorite established authors. He's done this for the past four years. In his October/Fall newsletter, Mr. Stanek features three upcoming authors and one was Victoria Taylor Murray.
While I wasn't sure if Ms. Murray's Lambert series was right for me (her other ones are mystery/romance), I knew at once "Passed Down Through 4 Generations: Victoria Taylor Murray's Favorite Family Recipes: How it all Began" was my kind of book, and equally as important, it was a book my wife would enjoy as well.
As the name implies ""Passed Down Through 4 Generations," has great history behind the recipes. Ms. Murray wrote this book with her brother Joseph. Having tried the recipes, I can say there are many great ones, and more than a few that have become new favorites. I enjoy cooking, and I enjoyed this book. Recommended for any chef or chef to be.
Even The Drink Recipes Are Great!.......2006-05-27
As a birthday gift this year a friend through me a huge party and used a few of the recipes in this fun cookbook including the drink recipes...my one word response was simply WOW! Thanks to the men cooks in this family my party was a real winner. As a second birthday gift my friend gave me a copy of this book. Needless to say I was thrilled! Now, I can hardly wait to through my own dinner party with all the trimings! (I highly recommend this cookbook, it's the best!)
This book shines! Wonderful for any cook!.......2006-05-22
I'm a kind of glitzy girl who loves to dress up and be glamourous, so it's a surprise to people who first meet me that I really know my way around a kitchen. As my hubby always says, "That girl can cook anything ... from gourmet to Southern." And I'm proud to admit that I truly enjoy cooking. Always have ...
Another thing I dearly love is my family and I'm very sentimental about family connections. The title of this cookbook intrigued me because of the family involvement, but then when I read that the author's brother is a chef who joined her in this venture, I just HAD to buy it.
I'm glad I did. I've already prepared some of the fine dishes and they smelled so good, my hubby couldn't wait to sit down to dinner. He's raving to all the neighbors about this cookbook too.
Thanks to both Taylors for the fine dining experiences. We look forward to many more, and I'm baking several of the yummy pastries for our church brunch on Father's Day.
No matter how hungry you are,.......2006-05-17
There is something delicious for everyone to chow-down on. The recipes are easy to follow and the finished dish is wonderful. I absolutely love this book and keep it handy so I don't have to panic if a family member or friend suddenly decides to visit without notice. Most of my family members and friends are usually starving when they drop by. Now thanks to the Taylor family of men chefs I don't have to worry about what I'll make them to eat...No More Panic For Me! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!!!
"Farout".......2006-04-22
This book is loaded with farout recipes and advice. A great book for those who may need a little help in the kitchen (like me.) Talk about a useful kitchen tool!

This I Cannot Forget: The Memoirs of Nikolai Bukharin's Widow
ASIN: 0231107307 |
Amazon.com
The story behind How It All Began is almost as compelling as that contained within its pages. Of all those in Lenin's inner circle, Nikolai Bukharin stood out as a kinder, gentler sort of revolutionary: a painter, writer, and student of the social and natural sciences who later defended Lenin's liberal New Economic Policy during the '20s. If he hadn't fallen prey to Stalin's maniacal purges, the history of Russian Communism might have turned out quite differently. Instead, Bukharin spent a year in prison writing feverishly and awaiting trial. He finished four books during that hellish year--two books of political theory, a volume of poems, and then this unfinished novel--before being shot in his cell. The resulting manuscript could easily have vanished from the face of the earth. Improbably, it survived in Stalin's personal archives, from whence it was rescued, translated by George Shriver, and offered up as both historical document and genuinely interesting work of fiction--a sort of portrait of the revolutionary as a young man. How It All Began follows the coming of age of one Kolya Petrov, the son of vaguely liberal provincial Russians. Although Bukharin plants all the seeds of the political consciousness to come, this is done with a mercifully light touch, interspersed with character studies, lyrical descriptions of nature, and accounts of young Kolya's education. The book breaks off abruptly when Kolya is only 15, as the country was about to plunge into 1905's failed revolution--and as Bukharin himself was about to be silenced forever.
Book Description
-- New York Times
Here at last in English is Nikolai Bukharin's autobiographical novel and final work. Many dissident texts of the Stalin era were saved by chance, by bravery, or by cunning; others were systematically destroyed. Bukharin's work, however, was simultaneously preserved and suppressed within Stalin's personal archives.
At once novel, memoir, political apology, and historical document, How It All Began, known in Russia as "the prison novel," adds deeply to our understanding of this vital intellectual and maligned historical figure. The panoramic story, composed under the worst of circumstances, traces the transformation of a sensitive young man into a fiery agitator, and presents a revealing new perspective on the background and causes of the revolution that transformed the face of the twentieth century.
Among the millions of victims of the reign of terror in the Soviet Union of the 1930's, Bukharin stands out as a special case. Not yet 30 when the Bolsheviks took power, he was one of the youngest, most popular, and most intellectual members of the Communist Party. In the 1920's and 30's, he defended Lenin's liberal New Economic Policy, claiming that Stalin's policies of forced industrialization constituted a "military-feudal exploitation" of the masses. He also warned of the approaching tide of European fascism and its threat to the new Bolshevik revolution. For his opposition, Bukharin paid with his freedom and his life. He was arrested and spent a year in prison. In what was one of the most infamous "show trials" of the time, Bukharin confessed to being a "counterrevolutionary" while denying any particular crime and was executed in his prison cell on March 15, 1938.
While in prison, Bukharin wrote four books, of which this unfinished novel was the last. It traces the development of Nikolai "Kolya" Petrov (closely modeled on Nikolai "Kolya" Bukharin) from his early childhood though to age fifteen. In lyrical and poetic terms it paints a picture of Nikolai's growing political consciousness and ends with his activism on the eve of the failed 1905 revolution. The novel is presented here along with the only surviving letter from Bukharin to his wife during his time in prison, an epistle filled with fear, longing, and hope for his family and his nation. The introduction by Stephen F. Cohen articulates Bukharin's significance in Soviet history and reveals the troubled journey of this novel from Stalin's archives into the light of day.
Customer Reviews:
Stunning literary ability.......2006-08-16
Before reading this book, I knew Bukharin was a political genius that few have matched. However, I did not realize his brilliance as a writer: he appeals wonderfully to all the visual and emotional senses as a great novelist. He occasionally discusses his growing political awareness, but that is not the focus of this work. His love of life, nature, and family show the incredible depth of his mind. Much credit must also be given to the translator for making the language so effusive in English.
It's a wonderful miracle that this book was not destroyed by Stalin; it's just a shame that it's incomplete, cutting off in mid-thought. Nevertheless, what Bukharin was able to complete gives provides an enthralling look into life in late Tsarist Russia, as well as putting us a bit closer with one of the most tragic victims of the purges.
Engrossing narrative from the eve of the revolutions.......2006-05-23
Set in the pre-revolutionary Russia, Bukharin's novel attempts to demonstrate, through the eyes of a youth named Nikolai Petrov, how the revolutionary spirit fermented and grew among the youth and intelligentsia. While this novel could be read with an eye toward the abuses of the Soviet Union and dismissed as political propaganda, in doing so the reader would miss the wealth of historical detail with which Bukharin writes. Every page is bursting with succulent fruit for anyone interested in the social, economic, and cultural world of the peasants and the working class at the turn of the century in pre-revolutionary Russia. Part of that fruit is socialism, communism, atheism, and the raging underground debates taking place during that period; seen as history, however, Bukharin gives us an invaluable insider's view, recalling his youth in all its variety and discussing the situations that led him down the path his life had taken.
The story revolves around Nikolai, who is obviously a cipher for Bukharin himself. Young Kolya (Nikolai) is full of energy, wit, and curiosity. As he grows and excels in school, his thinking begins to grow as well, from that of an innocent child to that of a young man on the verge of becoming a revolutionary himself. Unfortunately, the saddest part about this novel is that it ends in the middle of a chapter; Stalin finally had Bukharin executed, making it very difficult to continue writing. The writing is so well done it is hard to believe Bukharin never had a chance to re-write it; we are reading essentially his first draft, written in prison. His astounding intellect is obvious, quoting from German, French, English, and Russian poets and authors, occasionally making references to Latin or Greek jokes the children learned in high school, and discussing the variety of birds and other animals Kolya collects with amazing clarity.
A brilliant, beautiful work.......1999-05-27
Bukharin's autobiographical work is a lyrical, moving, story of the life of a young boy in pre-Soviet russia. Unlike Leon Trotsky's autobiography, which is a similar work in content, this is a novel. And a grand one. When you read the touching descriptions of Kolya's then idyllic, then tragic domestic life, you feel helpless, sad, for you know that this boy will eventually be dead, the New World he helped to create corrupted and turned against him. The very existence of this novel is a message of hope, that even under the most tragic and ironic circumstances there can something joyous (Bukharin wrote the novel while in Lubyanka prison). The poignancy of all this is further increased by the included letter by Bukharin, written to his wife Anna Larina and not given to her for 50+ years. This book also stands as a monument (in a medium I belief he would have perhaps preferred) to Nikolai Bukharin, a brilliant scholar, writer, and Revolutionary
A remarkable book, written under remarkable circumstances........1998-08-27
This is a remarkable book. It combines three forms in a single work: 1) a detailed and evocative story of a boy growing up in late 19th century Russia, 2) an informative and moving autobiography of one of the most important Bolshevik leaders, and 3) commentary on the social and economic developments leading up to the 1905 and 1917 revolutions, including (in the tradition of Russian novels) imagined descriptions of important meetings of leaders of state. Most remarkable, though, is that the entire book was written in the nights of Bukharin's confinement in Moscow's Lubyanka Prison while he awaited almost certain execution following his notorious "show trial". The idea of a man who knows he could be shot at any moment writing such detailed, even leisurely descriptions of his childhood in Moscow and Bessarabia is almost beyond comprehension. Indeed, the novel breaks off in mid-sentence. This book should not be missed by anyone interested in 19th and 20th century Russian history, and will be enjoyed by anyone interested in a good coming-of-age novel as well.

Perfect for the young mind........2005-03-20
In one very special way, I had a wonderful childhood. My parents shopped at a small grocery store that had an extensive rack of comics. The owners were very nice people who allowed me to read the comics while my parents bought groceries. Since my father also bought his mother's groceries, I had plenty of time to read (devour) them all. Therefore, I was able to read the original issues of most of the superheroes that erupted from the fertile mind of Stan Lee at Marvel Comics. When I opened this book, I recognized the cover of the first issue of the X-Men series.
The early sixties were a time of great political uncertainty and scientific advancement. Lee used both of them to great advantage in developing the idea of the mutant with great powers. By developing the character of Professor X who gathered together many mutants at his school, a crime fighting team known as the X-Men was developed. The group has changed a great deal over the years, both in appearance and in membership. This is a history of that group and young readers can also learn something about the world. For example, it is noted that the bones of the winged X-Man Angel are hollow, just like those of real birds. Other relevant science facts, such as details about water freezing in the section about Ice-Man relate the powers of the X-Men to the physical laws of the universe.
I strongly recommend this as a book for young readers. The topic is one that they will find of great interest, it is very well written at the appropriate level and they can learn something about the world. Perfect for the young mind.
Introduction to the Original Team........2003-05-12
This easy to read book aimed at young readers serves as a perfect introduction for those unfamiliar with the original X-Men team: Cyclops, Marvel Girl, the Beast, Iceman, and Angel all studying under the tutelage of Charles Xavier, aka Professor X. The book also talks about Magneto and the first adventure that the X-Men took part in. The classic team has taken many changes over the years, but few teams will rival the original. Great introduction to the original X-Men team.
The Story Behind the X-Men.......2001-01-01
This is a great book for any X-Men fan or someone who just became interested in them. It tells how Professor Xavier, Magneto,Cyclops (Scott Summers), Marvel Girl (Jean Grey, also known as Phoenix, Beast (Hank McCoy), Angel (Warren Worthington III, also known as Archangle) and Iceman (Bobby Drake) came to become the first X-Men. It also gives some info about other X-Men like WOlverine and some of their recent and former enimes like Juggernaut, and Quicksilver. One thing I enjoyed about this book is it had a lot of pics. from old and recent comics. Overall this is a pretty good book!

Customer Reviews:
Not very useful.......2007-04-13
I wish I could praise this book. For each topic Wagh goes straight for the math and gives a full solution of a key problem that sparked the development of the theory: for integral calculus we study Archimedes's quadrature of the parabola, for coordinate geometry we study Descartes's solution of Pappus's problem, etc. This is admirable, but unfortunately the mathematical discussions are technically messy and clumsy to the point of being essentially useless. The concise historical narrative is very conventional, including, for example, a very narrow-minded understanding of the development of the calculus. Like so many other fools, Wagh insists that the calculus caused a "crisis" because its methods were not rigourous. Here he commits the common mistake of assuming that mathematicians are logical machines, defined by their strict mode of reasoning. Nothing could be further from the truth. Mathematicians care about results and the beauty of ideas. We usually like logical reasoning because it usually furthers these goal, but if logic stands in our way then we are not afraid to abandon it. From Wagh's narrow perspetive many aspects of history appear "surprising": "Even granting that the argument which lay at the foundation of Calculus was faulty and brittle, the surprising picture, on the other side, was the fact that results based on it were remarkably sound. ... It is surprising that such results were permitted to appear in the published literature. ... In a way, it is surprising that mathematicians of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries should have so much ignorance and so little respect for conditions under which given theorems are valid" (pp. 163-166). Apparently it never occurs to people like Wagh that the reason why the historical development seems so "surprising" to them is that they simply don't understand it properly.

Excellent!.......2002-09-24
Finally, two Christian authors give the general reading public a thorough, theologically-sound take on how science and Genesis fit together. For too long, unsophistocated readers have been offered nothing but a non-stop ... of "young-earth creationist" clap-trap (like the one star reviewer on this page) that really distorts the Bible in the name of "simplicity." Serious studies that take treat both the Bible and science with respect have been written only for readers who are significantly smarter and more intellectually inclined than the average Bible student. Hopefully books like this will help bring sound Biblical hermenuetics down to earth for 100-IQ readers (who are, statistically, the larger chunk of the population) who'd otherwise be sucked in Young Earth Creationism....
Christian Compromise!.......2002-03-09
While easy to read and understand, this book is another terrible attempt to marry evolution and creation, two diametrically opposed ideaologies.
In short, it takes the very flawed idea that the creation story in Genesis is figurative, and that God used the big bang and subsequent molecular evolution to bring about life as we know it. Much worse, it comes from 2 authors who claim to be bible teachers, one of them even a church elder, and who also claim they believe that scripture IS the authoritative word of God.
If they do believe the Bible, I have trouble believing they have thought their position through. The book of Genesis is clearly written as an historical account meant to be taken literally, not as a parable, or in figurative terms such as Psalms (poetic). The word "day" in Genesis, used in that context, can only refer to a literal 24 hour day, not long periods of time. Most of all, the Bible clearly teaches that God created a pure world, placed Adam and Eve in it, and pronounced it as "Very good." It further teaches that death, spiritual and physical, was the penalty of Adam's sin and God's resulting judgement on mankind. Of course, through Christ, the way of redemption is made clear, spiritually now, physically at the end of time when there will be "no more curse". Belief in Stan and Bruce's compromise means that death was not the penalty for sin, but instead was the mechanism God used over millions of years to bring man into existence. Death and bloodshed were part of the "very good" creation. This problem, amongst others, is never addressed in this book.
While I do not believe it was the authors' intent, they, and others with their view, do Christianity much harm. If Genesis does not mean what it says, where else in the Bible can you apply this logic? This view is saddening when it comes from people who say they are Bible teachers, but are unwittingly misleading many a Christian through such publications.
"If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do?" Ps 11:3 Evolution was born to be a naturalistic explanation of how the world came to be without the need for God. Most scientists understand this. Books such as this help Darwinists accomplish their goal of relegating the Bible to be a book of myths and mother goose fairy tales. Stan and Bruce would do better to just stick with the story our Creator gave us, back in Genesis.

I strongly recommend this book for any layman new to the Science-Bible discussion.
"Bruce and Stan's Guide to How It All Began" is an excellent summary of real issues related to the Science-Bible and Creation-Evolution debate. They do a great job of keeping the main things the main thing and explaining the technical details in terms that layman can understand. I plan to use this book to supplement classes that I plan to teach on Genesis, Science and the Bible in the future.
