Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

4 out of 5 stars This is for the serious botanist.......2003-04-23

Contains excellent illustrations. The terminology and abbreviations may be confusing to some. Needs to be updated as some of the family nomenclature has been changed. I wouldn't recommend this for the average "what's this plant" person.

4 out of 5 stars Flora of the Pacific Northwest.......2000-02-19

EXCELLENT first-book to reach for when needing proper scientific terminology. Does include some common names in the descriptions. Extremely detailed and uses extensive abbreviations. I used this book in Univ. of Idaho botany classes in the 1980's and still use it in my daily job now (year 2000). However, it does indeed need to be updated for current terminology and names, including lower-case spellings.

4 out of 5 stars "The" Botany Key........1999-01-22

This botany key is used by University of Idaho's botany classes. It is still "the" book reached for by the professional in the work force. Afterall, what else is there that is so comprehensive? However, it is in need of revision due to changes in genus and specie names since its fifth printing of 1981.

4 out of 5 stars Respected key for Pacific Northwest flora........1998-12-31

This key for PNW flora is the key used by Washington State University. Text is scientific in nature, and is not intended for pleasure reading. An excellent but complex key, it follows a standard dichotomous (two choices for each step) format. Although not intended for the layman, the text includes a good glossary and has helpful black and white illustrations. This book would not be a good introduction to dichotomous keying as it is designed for the serious botanist.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Moving and Profound.......2007-10-18

A profoundly sensitive approach to death as a part of life, this book offers wisdom, courage, and the opportunity for reflection about our lives, our meaning, and our purpose. Beautifully photographed and simply written, "The Fall of Freddie the Leaf" describes the life of a leaf named Freddie: his friendships with other leaves, his observations, and his tender feelings. Freddie has conversations of meaning and depth with his leaf-friend Daniel, whose wisdom of the life-cycle brings comfort With Freddie's realization that some of the other leaves disapppear also comes the understanding that his time to pass on will also come, and although there is sadness, there is also hope and understanding. The moment of Freddie's passing is dignified, poignant, and the book is one of affirmation, both for children and adults. Remember Beauty and Songs for a Blue Time, Badger's Parting Gifts.

5 out of 5 stars More Than Grief Counseling.......2007-09-23

Many people first encounter "Freddie" during the times surrounding the deaths of loved ones, but the value of the book goes far beyond grief counseling.
The story of Freddie the Leaf is ultimately not just about death, but about becoming attuned to the cycles of life. As such, it should be bought and read to children regardless of whether a loved one is dying. A large part of the story is concerned with how Freddie lives and relates to the world around him: the other leaves on his tree, the tree itself and to the world surrounding the tree, the people and creatures inhabiting that world and so on.
This is a book about how we relate to the Universe, how we find a place in it that is right for us, and how we see ourselves as part of its inevitable movement. Death is only a part of that movement.
The grief caused by death is, after all, not about the death itself, but rather about the absence of the loved one. The understanding of death does not lessen the pain of that absence, but it does place it in a context that is larger than any specific death.
Freddie's reluctance to let go and fall, is really about his failure to relax into his place in the larger context. Once he sees himself as a part of the Universe, he finds peace and contentment in it. As such, "The Fall of Freddie the Leaf" is an extraordinarily effective way of introducing, not only discussions about death, but discussions with children (and adults, I might add) about the rhythms of life, and how making a good death is largely dependent on living a good and authentic life, as Freddie did.
The book is, after all, sub-titled, "A Story of Life for All Ages," and as such, it deserves to be on everyone's bookshelf whether they are dealing with a death in the family or not.

Book Description

This is the first-ever English-language edition of the book Leo Tolstoy considered to be his most important contribution to humanity, the work of his life's last years. Widely read in prerevolutionary Russia, banned and forgotten under Communism; and recently rediscovered to great excitement, A Calendar of Wisdom is a day-by-day guide that illuminates the path of a life worth living with a brightness undimmed by time. Unjustly censored for nearly a century, it deserves to be placed with the few books in our history that will never cease teaching us the essence of what is important in this world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Prophetic.......2006-08-17

Immediately upon purchasing this book, I ordered another and sent it to my cousin who subsequently purchased 3, one for her husband who had opened the one I sent to her and begun highlighting passages and the other 2 she gave to her children who are in college. I know that Tolstoy viewed this as one of his greatest accomplishments in life and read from it every day. I read it cover to cover in about a week and then went back and picked up so that I can study each day. I never say that books change my life. I do think that I am the type of person who, when presented with something that resonates with my soul, I immediately align my actions with whatever it happens to be. There are many passages in this book that resonate with me, some of which elevated my thoughts and actions to a new level. I think that is why it meant so much to Tolstoy to leave this as his final work.

5 out of 5 stars Everyday Living.......2006-03-04

For those who like and need a reminder that we are part of a larger world; and a beautiful world at that. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The best quote book.......2006-01-29

I have always liked Tolstoy but this book made me respect him even more. He was so deep, and spiritual. The book has 365 pages, each having a couple of deep thoughts for each day of the year. I haven't read many quote books so far but this one is worth the money that I spent on it. I found some of them excellent, some very good, while very few just so so. It depends on what you can relate to. You will love the ones that apply to your life and experiances. Overall, a nice book.

5 out of 5 stars Tolstoy wrote a trilogy of wise thoughts.......2006-01-02

This timeless masterpiece is a part of a larger work created by the great novelist and thinker. Tolstoy produced a trilogy of wise thoughts: 1 - "The Calendar of Wisdom," 2 - "Thoughts of Wise Men," 3 - "Wise Thoughts for Every Day."

The last book in this trilogy, "Wise Thoughts for Every Day," was recently published in English by Arcade Publishers (2005) and is another Tolstoy masterpiece worth reading!

The major difference between these two books is the following: "The Calendar" presents aphorisms by Tolstoy's favorite writers and philosophers; and "Wise Thoughts" includes thoughts on the same topics - that is God, love, our life, family, money, faith, etc. - written by Tolstoy himself.

Tolstoy considered this book "more important" than any other book he has ever written, he repeatedly read excerpts from it to his family and friends, and highly recommended it to everyone.

This book was right up there with The Coldest Winter Ever for me. This was urban fiction at its best. Can't wait to read "Dangerous" I have a new literary hero.

2 out of 5 stars Not Impressed. How can a good book go so wrong?.......2007-06-20

This book gave me mixed meanings and I wasn't to happy about it. Too many points were left imcomplete and every chapter had a cliff hanger that really was pointless. It was obvious that Life was going to get set up by one of those broads. This was a story which potential was shot because the character's lives went from making sense to making no sense at all. To be a kingpin, Life had to be the dumbest thug--in my opinion. The man accidentally became a millionare out of stupidity. He just convince me of being a thug or keeping it " gangsta".
Hope was a girl born and raised in the Pork and Beans projects. That's great and all but everybody in the world is not from Miami so I wished the author would have delve more into Hope's past life and how it reflected on her present character. It threw me on a whim to find out, after 39 some odd pages, that she had a fiance. It seems that some characters were just being thrown into the story too late. How come nobody found out who shot at Life, Black Pearl, and her baby? The story ended so wrong. I can understand trying to cut into a deep, sentimentel issue amongst black people, but how in the hell did that fit with the rest of the story? Everybody knows when you write a gangsta story, it has to be hard gangsta or its not gonna be right. That's what happened with this story for me. However, every author has a book that doesn't take to the reader and this was the book that did that for Mr. Sullivan. However, it won't stray from reading any others by him because I don't think his writing is terrible. He has potential.

This book was Greeat! A sexxy, hot steamy, and erotic urban tale. The ending wasn't a HOllywood ending, but I truly enjoyed!

5 out of 5 stars Started off slow, but it picked up FAST!.......2007-04-15

I'll be honest and say that I almost gave up on this book at the beginning because I felt like it had no direction, but after the lesbians street hustlers, Tomica and Evette and Life's road dawg, Blazack was introduced the story had me glued to the pages.

Life, a small time street hustler with big dreams met up with a young woman name Hope after being set up by narc agent and they ended up in Florida where after more small time hustling he became one of the biggest street hustlers there.

This story was a rollercaoster ride and I thoroughly enjoy the court scene I felt like I had a seat right there on the front row! Hope shined in this scene and she me on the edge of my seat!

4 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-04-06

This book was actually enjoyable. It held my interest and the story line made sense. some of the things that happened I figured out before they wer revealed, but I still enjoyed the story.

5 out of 5 stars Why don't we teach this in our schools?.......2006-07-16

This book has been in my library for years. I have given copies for gifts many times, I wish I knew how many. The information in this book is so very important for everyone and written in such a way that it can be easily read and understood by everyone. Should be required reading in every high school and university.
I have read other Buscaglia books and found them all to be well written and filled with beneficial content.
Thanks for the opportunity to review a winner.

5 out of 5 stars Love 101: The class EVERYONE should take.......2006-07-14

Everyone should read,no make that study Leo's books. This book opened my eyes and softened my heart. Anyone who reads it with an open mind will find themselves transformed. I am someone who grew up VERY ANGRY. My anger caused me problems upon problems and was a contributing factor in the breakup of my first marriage. When I hit rock bottom and knew things had to change, it was then that I came across a worn, slightly abuse copy of a book at a second hand store. The Title on it was simply "LOVE". Don't misunderstand me, I am far from free from my anger. Yet, those who know me will tell you how much I have changed. I feel Leo books, DVD's (I have several), and tapes have been a major factor in that change. I recommend ALL items by Leo Buscaglia.

Leo talks not only about loving others, but loving yourself. Love your face, even if your nose doesn't quite match the rest of your face. Love yourself for who you are, no matter who that may be. It's the funny and odd things about us that sometimes makes us the most loveable. So, buy this book and, if your paying attention to what is said in it, learn to laugh, hug, cry (yes, even grown men can cry), and fall in love with this rollercoster we call life.

5 out of 5 stars What life is all about..........2005-12-03

This is a 5 star book because it can change vastly the way you see things. It'll also make you want to bring love directly into your life and to give it to everyone around you.

The book covered the essential aspects of living in love and what love really is all about. Buscaglia will make you realize how important it is to study love but more importantly to live in it.

5 out of 5 stars Mystery of Love is the greatest Mystery of all.......2005-04-30

This is sweet and simple in what it set out to do. Answers are attempted throughout but never finalized because love is never finalized.

BIG IDEA: Love is being ultimately present with the person or thing and growing together for the sake of growth.

OTHER IDEA: Education should be a 3 part process to help an individual:

    1) discover their uniqueness
    2) harness and grow their uniqueness
    3) share their uniqueness

    till next time...Tom

    Book Description

The soul-searching book that inspired Gandhi to embrace the concept of passive resistance, Tolstoy's 1894 polemic outlines a radical, well-reasoned revision of traditional Christian thinking. The revered novelist and political thinker denounces violent revolution, calling upon readers to rely upon their inner divinity for the strength to effect social change.

    Download Description

The Christian religion is not a legal system which, being imposed by violence, may transform men's lives. Christianity is a new and higher conception of life. A new conception of life cannot be imposed on men; it can only be freely assimilated. And it can only be freely assimilated in two ways: one spiritual and internal, the other experimental and external.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Practical Christianity.......2007-09-02

Profound and controversial reading dealing with the misunderstanding of Christianity. It's hard to imagine a book like this was written in the 19th century because it reads very contemporary. After reading the first few chapters, it's no wonder the book was forbidden in Russia. Non-resistance to evil by force is a topic hard to practice let alone to be preached. Leo Tolstoy presents a refreshing look at Christianity with a philosophy and a teaching dealing with the individual spirit rather than a collective form. It's a good complement to Wayne Dyer and Eckart Tolle teachings. A great spiritual awakening is taking place in the world and rethinking the role of the Church and religious traditions is part of that awakening. The timing of this book is amazing. This is a "shake the foundations" book. This book will challenge the traditional believer to examine their beliefs about the role of the modern church. A must read for all those who would like clear understanding of basic Christian principles.

5 out of 5 stars The Kingdom of God Is Within You.......2007-09-01

An excellent summary of this book's content is contained in the title itself: _The Kingdom of God Is Within You: Christianity Not as a Mystic Religion but as a New Theory of Life_. A more detailed summary, spanning several pages, is found in Chapter IV, "Christianity Misunderstood by Men of Science." In this chapter, Tolstoy tells us that "Life, according to the Christian religion, is a progress toward the divine perfection. ... The fulfillment of Christ's teaching consists in moving away from self toward God. ... The Christian precepts (the commandment of love is not a precept in the strict sense of the word, but the expression of the very essence of the religion) are the five commandments of the Sermon on the Mount - all negative in character." (These are found in Matthew 5:21-42.)

    1. "The ideal is not to desire to do ill to anyone, not to provoke ill will, to love all men. The precept, showing the level below which we cannot fall in the attainment of this ideal, is the prohibition of evil speaking."

    2. "The ideal is perfect chastity, even in thought. The precept, showing the level below which we cannot fall in the attainment of this ideal, is that of purity of married life, avoidance of debauchery."

    3. "The ideal is to take no thought for the future, to live in the present moment. The precept, showing the level below which we cannot fall, is the prohibition of swearing, of promising anything in the future."

    4. "The ideal is never for any purpose to use force. The precept, showing the level below which we cannot fall is that of returning good for evil, being patient under wrong, giving the cloak also."

    5. "The ideal is to love the enemies who hate us. The precept, showing the level below which we cannot fall, is not to do evil to our enemies, to speak well of them, and to make no difference between them and our neighbors."

These ideals or requirements seem utopian, and many people who consider themselves to be Christians have looked for ways to accommodate them to temporal concerns like the amassing of treasure and the pursuit of personal advantage. Tolstoy professes himself to be shocked by these attempts: for him, these are straightforward, plainly worded rules of conduct that all Christians must follow. He is fully aware of their radical nature, and he embraces the revolutionary implications of Christ's message. He imagines an objection: "Civilization, art, science, culture will disappear!" but answers it by saying that "Only what is false in them will be destroyed: all the truth there was in them will only be stronger and more flourishing." Indeed, Tolstoy thirsts for the day - not far off, he thinks - when an inequitable social order, maintained by violence, will collapse and real Christians will form a more just and egalitarian society.

Tolstoy's interpretation of the "new law" from the Sermon on the Mount is compelling, but he sometimes runs into difficulties when he argues that these radical and otherworldly commandments should become the basis of public policy. For example, he advocates reform of criminals over punishment - a progressive and humane position - but in arguing this point he seems not to recognize that criminals have any motive other than need, or that criminals might be deterred by the threat of punishment. As another example, Tolstoy maintains that violence sanctioned by a state - as in war, or as punishment for a crime - is no different morally than the violence of one man against another. (As support, he cites a pamphlet by a contemporary that is cunningly titled "How Many Men Are Necessary To Change a Crime into a Virtue?) But are there not instances where state violence can acquire some degree of legitimacy from the consent of its citizens to a set of laws adhered to by all, or by what its citizens consider to be just? Are there not instances where state violence can prevent an even greater catastrophe from occurring? In other words, there are some fairly obvious objections to his line of argument that Tolstoy does not address. Still, a balanced assessment would conclude that Tolstoy's deep skepticism of states and state violence was mostly vindicated by subsequent events in Russia and the rest of the world throughout the twentieth century.

I think that readers will be impressed by the vigor and sincerity of Tolstoy's thought and by many other idiosyncratic pleasures contained in this work. (This review is based on the Project Guttenberg version of _The Kingdom of God Is Within You_.)

4 out of 5 stars Relevant Even Now!.......2007-05-26

Christian and non-christian alike, will find this a provocative and contemporary read. Written before Russia's Revolution, Tolstoy smacks us between the eye's a 100 yrs later. While this was one of Gandhi's favorite books, it is required reading for 'believer's'....who are not faint of heart and willing to be challenged. Fundamentalist will be inspired to think furiously and reconsider their so-called Biblical point of view. Like many authors of the Tolstoy era, much of their writing is a bit compulsive and redundant. Consider the repetitious phraseology a matter of emphasis, and observe that Christendom has failed to advance the Sermon On The Mount since Tolstoy and Gandhi originally petitioned us to pay attention to Jesus's simple declarations.

3 out of 5 stars Recommended by MK Gandhi.......2007-02-10

My interest in this volume stemmed from Gandhi's recommendation of this work by Tolstoy. In his book subtitiled "The Story of My Experiments with Truth" Gandhi states that he had been inspired to reread the volume and to work diligently to spread Tolstoy's message of "non-resistance to evil by force", a concept embodied in Gandhi's Satyagraha campaigns in South Africa and India.

I gave the book a three star rating in marked contrast to higher rankings of many reviewers. I would have lowered my rating further except the book may be of value to individuals seeking information on Gandhi's approach. The book should have been an essay of modest length, not the 350 pages of repetitious material by the great novelist. My suggestion, read the final chapter in which Tolstoy discusses power in societies based upon foundations of pervasive hypocrisy, a kernel worth considering.

    4 out of 5 stars What I Believe synopsis.......2007-01-10

Tolstoy wrote the book "What I Believe" and it was banned for years, very difficult to find even today, but Amazon has it. This book is about that banned book. This is a good read, but I preferred the real deal, if you can only read one, read What I Believe by Tolstoy.
