Book Description

Stop the Hurting

Mary Pipher's bestselling Reviving Ophelia triggered widespread interest in the culture of preteen and teenage girls and the seeming epidemic of relational aggression (bullying) among them. Gossip, teasing, forming cliques, and other cruel behaviors are the basis of this bullying, which harms both victim and aggressor. Until now, no one has been able to offer practical and effective solutions that stop girls from hurting each other with words and actions. But in Girl Wars, two experts explain not only how to prevent such behavior but also how to intervene should it happen, as well as overcome the culture that breeds it.

Illustrated by compelling true stories from mothers and girls, the authors offer effective, easy-to-implement strategies that range from preventive to prescriptive, such as how to

With their combined experience in offering and evaluating programs that combat bullying, the authors show that girls not only want to help rather than hurt each other, they can do so with guidance from concerned adults.

This book is fabulous - just what I was looking for!! Every adult who works with young girls should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Finally Advice for Dads.......2004-01-01

As the dad of a teen girl who has gone through a lot of bullying I was nodding my head at the stories. Then I got to the chapter on Dads and Daughters and thought "At last!" This is the first concrete advice I've found on how to help my daughter. It's great to recognize that fathers play an important role too. One of my daughter's teachers read this, and is going to start a program at her school to stop relational aggression, so even more girls will benefit.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and inspiring!.......2004-01-01

This book on female bullying is an absolutely wonderful. "Sticks and stones can break your bones, but words can break your heart." That's what female bullying would hurt girls deeply. This book is worth reading and there are some great take-home points. I really enjoyed the book and found it helpful. Only if I read it earlier!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-12-03

I picked this up after reading Rachel Simmons' "Odd Girl Out" (which was outstanding) and wanting to know how I could take action against social aggression as a teacher. This book did not supply the answers. First, it's aimed primarily at parents, with hardly any direct recommendations to teachers (in fact, it almost takes the view that teachers are not likely to be effective allies in the battle against social aggression). Second, it espouses a number of strategies that strike me as naive and counterproductive. In her book, Simmons took a much savvier tack, identifying approaches that are likely to convince picked-on kids that YOU JUST DON'T GET IT AT ALL. Dellasega and Nixon seem to me to overemphasize church communities as a retreat from aggression -- this strikes me as not only naive but dangerous, since so many social aggressors cloak their meanness behind a façade of impeccable niceness, and what better way to prove how nice you are than to belong to a church group? They also endorse an activity called "the PowHer Game," which sounded to me about as bright an idea as a Jumping to Conclusions Mat; to confirm my hunch, I ran it past my sister (whose own junior-high experiences prompted her interest in "Odd Girl Out" and, by extension, mine), and she said, yep, any kid would think that was hokey beyond belief, and not one would put an ounce of trust in it.

Somewhere, either in print or in someone's mind, there is a book that can help parents, teachers and kids resist social aggression effectively. I don't think this one is it.

5 out of 5 stars The adventure continues!.......2004-02-02

"Caught In The Act" continues the story of the six Kelly children that were were sent away to get adopted by new families because their mother feels that she cannot afford to keep them. I read the first book in the series called "A Family Apart" and it was about the children getting adopted by new families and the second part was about Frances Kelly's adventures with her family. This book talks about how Michael Kelly is doing with the Friedrichs. Mike's main concern is that he believes that the Friedrichs are hiding something from him. He thinks this because he overheard a conversation about somebody named Ulrich. Mike's opinion is that Mr. Friedrich killed him. The story is all about Mike's adventure.

I really enjoyed the novel because it's interesting to see what life was like back in that time. So far I have read the books: A Family Apart, Caught In The Act and In The Face Of Danger. I'm going to read the whole series! If you are thinking of buying this book buy A Family Apart first.

If you like suspense, mysteries, conflicts, abrupt uproars,or just plain old horror/ questionable murder books you shoulid read this book.

Michael Patrick Kelly, age 11, is one of his five brothers and sisters who are being sent west on an orphan train by their Ma so they can live a better life than they've had working on the streets of New York City. While his brothers and sisters are placed in good homes, Mike finds life difficult with the family he has been adopted into, especially since he had been a pickpocket out of necessity in New York and going west had been his only other choice besides being sent to Tombs Prison. Mr Friedrich, the father, believes that Mike is nothing but trouble and beats him whenever his temper rises. Gunter, the 13 yr. old who hates Mike and would like to see him sent back to NY and Tombs Prison, tries everything he can to get him in trouble. Most of the time, he succeeds, but Mike remains determined and stays with them despite Gunter's efforts. Mrs.Friedrich is a motherly woman who gladly welcomes his placement in their family, and Mike finds a true friend in Reuben, the hired hand, and Marta, who is a housekeeper for the Friedrichs. While Mike is in the wagon on the way to his new home, he overhears a whispered conversation about a man named Ulrich that disappeared. Apparently, Mr.Friedrich thinks that Mike is just like Ulrich and that he should be "taken care of". As the days pass, Mike hears more tidbits of conversation and believes that Mr. Friedrich has killed Ulrich and that he is afraid someone is going to find his out secret. Mike tries to pry more information loose out of Marta, but she only hints that she knows something which does not need concern him. When Reuben disappears after a fight with Mr.Friedrich, Mike can only fear the worst, and later while in the woods he spies a freshly dug patch of dirt. And then on a trip to St. Joseph, Missouri, he openly tells the people at the general store that Reuben is gone and that he suspects Mr.Friedrich of his murder. What will happen next to Mike--Will he find Reuben? And who was Ulrich? Read this 2nd book in the Orphan Train Quartet by Joan Lowery Nixon to find out the happy ending to Mike's story.

Michael Patrick Kelly, a boy who steals to feed his family, is actually a very good kid. He would shine the customer (or victim's) shoes and then pick their pocket. However, he is caught, and sentenced to five years at Tombs prison- or to be sent west to start a new life. He goes west. And that, my friend, is how everything begins. Everyone of his siblings gets good parents- except him. Hans Friedrich, a rather bulky,er, really bulky man with a temper like a bomb- ready to go off. Gunter Friedrich, a 13 year old who hates Mike and is always trying to get him into trouble. And he does, too. Mrs. Friedrich is a lovely and nice cook. The maid, Marta,is in love with a rowdy boy-who loves her back! And Rueben-the hired hand is Mike's best friend. But when Reuben suddenly disapears, and a freshly dug plot of dirt turns up that day, Mike has a creeping suspicion of Mr.Friedrich, and if he will be next...

A fifth-grade subject of School describes the photographs in the book: "The pictures give a pretty good idea of the class, and how we are, except there's one thing missing. The teacher. She's not in the pictures. And I think she should be.... Sometimes I think he [Nicholas Nixon] takes pictures of people's feelings. Like when they're bored, and talking, or just sitting around, waiting. Or they're excited."

In fact, Nixon's incisive black-and-white portraits of schoolchildren at three Boston-area schools--Cambridge Elementary School, Perkins School for the Blind, and Boston Latin School--are just one part of the collaboration between the photographer and Pulitzer Prize-winning child psychiatrist Robert Coles. A three-part essay by Coles on the state of American schools--exploring the challenges and triumphs of both the students who attend them and the educators who teach there--accompanies the photographs. Taken together, the words and images combine to present a penetrating document of what goes on behind the classroom door. The words of schoolchildren of various ages and from different backgrounds peppered throughout the book add an extra dimension to this unique portrait of the experience of school.

Monica Crowley served as a personal assistant to former president Richard M. Nixon from July 1990 until his death in April 1994. During that period, she maintained a private journal in which she recorded his utterances with transcriptive clarity (a trait she attributes to having written down each conversation immediately after it was concluded). In Nixon Off the Record, she presented his views on political leadership and his opinions of specific leaders. In this sequel, she concentrates on Nixon's vision for America's foreign policy, which formed the basis of his attempts to influence the foreign policy of his successors, and his increasing awareness and acceptance of his own mortality.

Although Nixon in Winter is almost assuredly intended to portray Nixon's final years as a strong, ideologically committed statesman in semiexile, what often comes through is the image of a lonely old man suffering from frustration over his unintended legacy and reputation. Dismissing even those biographies which depict him positively, he worries, "I haven't written enough. Look at Churchill. He wrote volumes. Maybe I should write more." There's a certain wistfulness to Nixon waking Crowley up with a phone call at 7:15 A.M. or cooking chili out of the can for the two of them, serving it with grapefruit juice ("I find that it cuts the taste of the chili"). Nixon in Winter rounds out the public image of one of the 20th century's most controversial leaders with an unusually personal perspective.

      Book Description

During the last four years  of Richard Nixon's life, Monica Crowley served as his foreign-policy assistant and political confidante--a trusted member of the small circle of advisors with whom he shared hours of daily one-on-one conversations.

This is the remarkable story of the final public and private years of the thirty-seventh president, based on full reconstructions of the conversations Crowley had with him at the time.

Nixon in Winter puts the reader behind the scenes with the former president, allowing a unique glimpse into his life as elder statesman and private citizen.  It is filled with dramatic revelations about Nixon's influential role on the world stage, whether taking action himself to guide American foreign policy or whispering advice to his successors.  His hardheaded views on the end of the cold war, his emotional final trip to China, his powerful inside role during the 1991 Persian Gulf war, and his poignant thoughts on the legacy of Vietnam are recounted--as well as his frustrations with being out of power and with foreign-policy failures of Presidents Bush and Clinton.

With astonishing candor, Nixon also shares his final, startling thoughts on Watergate, including his assessments of all the major players in the scandal and what he would--and would not--have done differently.  And he offers an uncompromising look at the way the sexual scandals surrounding the Kennedys, Bill Clinton, Clarence Thomas, and Robert Packwood have changed the politics of scandal.

Above all, he reveals a more private self than ever before as he reflects on his faith and his family, copes with the death of Mrs. Nixon, and struggles to deal with aging and the only force that could ultimately destroy him: death.

Nixon in Winter is the inside story of his last years.  It is an unprecedented firsthand portrait, private, provocative, and candid.

5 out of 5 stars Crowley Does It Again.......2006-04-12

Oh man, Monica has done it again. Clearly there's not enough material here for more than a 2-page pamphlet, but Ms. Crowley doesn't let that stop her from filling out this delightful expose of Nixon as he looks back on his life. Many times thorughout this book you'll find yourself smacking your lips and thinking, "how much did I pay for this?" But the real payoff is when your realize that Nixon probably saw this young, uber-attractive, curvy-figured, author and saw it as one last chance to show her the microphone he used to make his recordings in the 70s -- can't say as I blame him. Crowley is delicious! I give it five stars out of 100.

      5 out of 5 stars Nixon's "Post-Mortem" Campaign.......2005-04-07

When I read that MSNBC was going to have Monica Crowley co-host a show with Ronald Reagan several months ago, I did a Google search and was pleased (and surprised) to see that she had actually wrote a follow-up to her first (and brief) book about her experiences as an aid to Richard Nixon in the years leading up to his death. This book is rather lengthy but in a good way since it offers a generous, nuanced look at our 37th President.

My guess is that Nixon would not have approved of all that Ms. Crowley writes about although Ms. Crowley rationalizes that Nixon must have known that she would write about her experiences with him.

Crowley's Nixon seems obsessed with justifying most of the decisions and actions that he took in his political career, especially the Presidential years. While we will never know for sure, Ms. Crowley does seem very successful in capturing the parts of Nixon that we never saw in public especially his "obsession" with improving his presidential legacy.

What I found particularly interesting--and worth the read alone--is Nixon's continued belief, right up until he died, that he was absolutely right to continue U.S. involvement in Vietnam for the first four years of his presidency. Nixon shows continued contempt (even in the 1990s) for those who chose not to serve in this cause (with special hostility for President Bill Clinton, whose victory over the first George Bush personally affronts him). Nixon also had plenty of contempt for the Congress for not allowing President Ford to "save" the cause in 1975 when North Vietnam would finally prevail.

I'm not sure that even Ms. Crowley is aware of how successful she is in putting the reader through long bouts of pain for those of us who lived through the sixties and early seventies with her vivid description of Nixon's reflections of how he wanted to prevail over the North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong in South Vietnam in spite of the fact that this longest war in our history was tearing much of our country apart.

In fact, Ms. Crowley suggests that Mr. Nixon--even with hindsight--would unfortunately fight the Vietnam War in exactly the same way even though almost 20,000 more men died in a losing cause under "his watch"--most of whom were draftees.

So, if your politics need a passion fix--or if the old Nixon hostility has left you and you think you want it back--consider reading this old chestnut of a book and I promise you that you will get your political currents rejuvenated and approach today's current events with much more vigor and perception.

1 out of 5 stars Venal, self-absorbed, and unreflective. That's this Nixon .......2005-03-19

In spite of the positive views of this book expressed here, I admit that I found it weak and diasppointing. Not only is Crowley fauning and seemingly incapable of asking any of the difficult questions, but the way that Nixon prattles on diminished him in my view far more than it rehabilitated him.

I have always thought that Nixon and LBJ were the last truly interesting presidents we had - each presided over watershed moments in American political history, each aspired to accomplish some great things. While some posturing was inevitable, their presidencies were far more about issues than the PR puffery we get today.

The fall of Nixon is one of the most momentous occurences in US history. How, I always wondered, could such an exceptional, talented, and intelligent man make such catastrophically bad decisions? What in the end did he learn from the debacle and what lessons does he have to offer us? What are his real views on the course of US history? On contemporary politics? Has he come to view it all in a non-partisan manner?

Rather than take any of these things on - Crowleys pretentions notwithstanding that she is recording his "talking to history" through her - we are served up dish after dish of self-serving arguments by Nixon. Even worse, in my reading, what he is most concerned about is getting treated with the proper dignity and respect (by current politicians) due to a former president, the achievement of which he devotes most of his fading energies. Not only is that boring, but it is pathetic how baldly he goes about worrying and complaining about how he is treated in trivial ceremonial events. Or he gloats about Clinton's problems. Rather than an elder statesman with something to say, he comes off as a wounded narcissist with an appallingly narrow vision.

I am not and never was a Nixon hater. Indeed, with a few glaring exceptions, I admired his diplomacy and the many things his administration did to implement the commitments of the Great Society in practical ways. He was a great politician and an American original. What I got here undermind that perception, I am sorry to say.

Crowley in my view is a sycophant, pure and simple. Nixon saw this in her and used her, allowing his most self-serving arguments to gain full flower in the hands of a 20-something recent college grad. She fails to challenge him on anything and is wholly uncriticial, perhaps lacking the depth to do so. There is not a dash of irony or self-awareness in any of it. Both she and Nixon should be ashamed at this.

This is a lousy book, just a whitewash. Nixon comes off very badly, if you read the subtext, in his last opportunity to come clean about his many mistakes and offer perspective on a remarkable life. He barely even admits any regrets, except as it relates to how he will be remembered, that is, he failed to reflect deeply on himself and learned nothing.

      Not recommended.

5 out of 5 stars See Nixon Up Close........2004-09-15

In "Nixon In Winter", Monica Crowley admits the reader into a day-to-day working relationship with of one the premier lives of the Twentieth Century over its last four years. This is interesting, both in terms of the character study of Nixon and the issues with which he dealt.

The book consists mostly of monologues or dialogues, dominated by Nixon, and Crowley's observation of actions. The author was a graduate student who worked as Nixon's foreign policy adviser from 1990-4. During this time she assisted him in writing his books, traveled with him and listened and elicited his views on the topics of the day.

This book opened my mind to several new concepts about Nixon. I had known that Nixon had written several books after leaving office. I had not realized the intensity with which he pursued his role as a continuing force in international politics. He devoted the best of his energies to this work. The planning for his trips to Russia and China included arrangements to meet the leading figures, those from whom he could learn and on whom he could exert influence. He viewed himself as the only world figure who could bridge the chasms between the U. S. and these foreign powers, chasms often caused by contemporary policies with which he was unassociated. To the end of his life, Nixon strove to mold world affairs to his vision. Frustrated by his inability to directly influence affairs, he had to work through his successors for whom he had varying degrees of respect. He alternatively predicted, assessed and railed against the coverage of his trips by the media. He seemed motivated both to redeem himself as well as to make a difference in the world.

Nixon continued to resent what he saw as a double standard, a practice under which he was found culpable for actions which were accepted or overlooked in other presidents. He never really accepted that his actions in connection with Watergate in any way justified the censure which he suffered.

Revealing also are the insights into the private Nixon. The Nixon who served food, sometimes with help, the Nixon who attributed the attention of Chinese crowds to the presence of Americans, rather than the presence of President Nixon and who wondered why strollers on the sidewalks of New York would look at traffic when he went to the city. The way he dealt with Pat's illness and confronted his own impending dissolution provide a window into his soul. The Dick who would greet Trick Or Treaters on Halloween is a man to whom I can relate.

I have heard it said that Nixon was a near genius, and Crowley's reports of they philosophies which he read and understood support that assessment.

Nixon comes across as a very interesting man, but one with whom I think it would be difficult to interact. Crowley seems to have enjoyed a good relationship, primarily by listening and doing the chores requested. He does not seem to be one with whom a visitor could have had a real exchange of ideas. He seems to be one to whom each contact was an opportunity to persuade with his "talking points." He seems to have learned by his own observations and readings, not by exchanging ideas with others. He seems to have been one who was interested in influencing the powerful, but who had no time for common Americans. I may be wrong, but I could envision engaging Presidents Ford, Carter and Bush in a fairly normal conversation, should I run into them in an airport or Sam's Club. I cannot envision any such discussion with Nixon.

All things considered, I rate this as a very engaging book. I judge a book, in part, by whether it whets my appetite for more. This really did that. I look forward to reading Nixon's books again, now with a better understanding of their purposes. I want to read more about his life and magnificent career. This proves that "Nixon In Winter" made an impression on me. This is a book for anyone with an interest in Nixon and who wants to understand him better.

      5 out of 5 stars It's Not That Cold.......2004-08-24

I read the authors other book on Nixon, Nixon Off The Record and enjoyed it, therefore, I thought I would give this book a chance. To be up front I do not have a deep interest in Nixon or that I think Nixon spells out some overly insightful view of the political landscape. It was just that this author did such a good job of detailing out (quoting) so many of Nixon's musings about the political landscape from 90 to 94 it made for interesting reading. This fact brings me to the first concern I have had with this and her other book and that is how could anyone truly remember these detailed conversations, even if she documented them the minute she left his side? What I finally decided was to go with it and just assume that if the author did ad lib a bit here and there that she spent so much time with Nixon that the ad lib was probably close to the truth.

As with the first book the thing that really surprised me was just how petty Nixon came off. He was whining and complaining about the press in about every three sentences. Regardless of the situation, he somehow related it back to how the press and Democrats unfairly went after him during the Watergate scandal. At this point in his life he must have focused on it so much that he saw the whole world through this hate filled prism. As the book went on his views on liberals also was detailed more and more and to call the comments ugly would be fair. The books finished with a chapter on religion and human nature and this is when the long knives really came out. If there was a social issue that Nixon did not agree with then it was somehow a negative plot or character trait displayed by "The Liberals" who he tried to insinuate where on the verge of destroying the American society.

I was still surprised at how Nixon downright disliked all the Presidents that came after him. In his mind, they all fell short of his accomplishments and were far from a close second. He of course would then work in a diatribe about the press and how they will never give him the credit he deserves. It was interesting that he had such a low opinion of Bush Sr., he went after Bush on the way he dealt with Russia, but he also let him have it about every aspect of his Presidency. Yet his opinion would change the minute anyone in the Bush administration called him. Once he was shown some attention his opinion would suddenly change and all was right again with Bush, at least for a few weeks. I was surprised by this very apparent selfish and almost immature behavior.

Overall Nixon came off as a man with a very bruised ego and a bit bitter. My view of the man was not enhanced after reading these two books, in fact I think less of the man. I thought he some good views on the political situation of the time, but it was basically common sense. I kept thinking that if you follow politics you would have many of the same observations. I guess I just thought given his long career that he would somehow have insight that really would have surprised me. Overall the book was very interesting and a fast read. I had trouble putting it down. If you are interested in American politics then this a great book.

This is a great book. I wouldn't recommend reading this book before: A Family Apart, Caught in the Act, and In the Face of Danger. It is the last book a Quartet about the Kelly children. Unless you don't want to read the first three I suggest you read A Place to Belong last.

      Book Description

We always hear how everyone in America is firmly planted in red or blue. They're permanently conservative or irreversibly liberal. But are we all really that locked in to the left or the right? Is America still a place where it's possible to change someone's mind and get them to cross over to the other side of the ideological fence? Is it possible to do that to yourself?

For John Moe, it simply wasn't enough to just read the Wall Street Journal editorial page a little more often or buy a framed picture of Barry Goldwater. He went in all the way, drinking deep from all aspects of the conservative universe to see if he could become that which he encountered.

Raised in a family of proud left-wingers (except for his late father, whose fondness for Nixon he is forced to confront) and living in deeply liberal Seattle most of his life, Moe set out to determine if what we believe is based on environment or actual conviction. Was there actually a conservative trapped inside him all along, just yearning to be set free? Moe puts himself on a strict conservative regimen: He resets his radio dials from NPR to Rush Limbaugh, goes head-to-head with some of today's most influential conservative thinkers for a series of "conversion sessions," makes pilgrimages to the Ronald Reagan and Richard M. Nixon museums, spends the Fourth of July in the most Bush-friendly county in the country, attempts to set his inner Charlton Heston loose at a gun range, flies cross-country to be nearer to Toby Keith, and test-drives the type of massive gas-guzzling SUV so feared and loathed by liberals (and becomes uncomfortably fond of it). Through it all he tries to maintain positive standing with his lefty wife and young but already liberal kids, including their four-year-old son, who joins the Sierra Club. These are but a few of the adventures chronicled in Moe's hilarious and timely first book.

Conservatize Me will strike a powerful chord with millions of disgruntled Americans ready for a fresh, humorous, and highly entertaining look at our country's political landscape. Moe's sharply observed prose will have enormous appeal for anyone interested in a new perspective on debates that have, for years, preoccupied our country and dominated our bestseller lists. Will Moe end up getting a Dick Cheney tattoo and swearing loyalty to the Christian Coalition? Will he get a Dennis Kucinich tattoo and dedicate his life to cooking vegan food at protest rallies? Read Conservatize Me and find out.

4 out of 5 stars mirrors an experiment i once tried........2007-07-06

because i have met many very nice people who insist that they are conservatives, I once attempted the very same thing that this author did. i made an effort to steep myself in conservative culture. i made it through about 15 minutes of the rush limbaugh show, and that was that. end of experiment. i have no idea how seemingly decent people can get behind such heartless/mindless ideology. personally, i couldn't pull it off. mr john moe is indeed to be commended for the time he put into his experiment. such a time consuming effort would damage my soul for life, i'm afraid. but i'm glad the man did it. his book was fun to read (something i really can't say about any other political, ideology driven book that i've read). kudos mr moe.

      5 out of 5 stars OK, so I haven't actually read it..........2007-04-16

...but, the trouble with a book like this (though it doesbn't trouble me) is that the author already has an opinion and probably doesn't expect to change it. Being a lefty myself, I don't have an issue with that. After all, I understand a significant point of this book is satire.
If one were to seriously attempt to convert oneself to the right wing agenda one could not write this book. Such a conversion would require one to simply accept what is handed down and not analyze the dogma or entertain any possibility that the other side could have any valid point. That is the strength of the right wing radical (so-called conservative) movement. Note the significance of Limbaugh lovers embracing the moniker of Ditto Head.
I'm sure this book is mainly succor for those of us who recognize that life is composed of infinite shades of grey, and I look forward to reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Entertaining Quest to Become a Conservative.......2007-02-14

`Conservatize Me' asks a question that has plagued me for years. What is the allure of Conservativism and why does it completely bypass some people like myself? But more importantly, is it possible to transform yourself into a Conservative true believer by immersing yourself in Conservativism? Does Conservativism bloom from nature or nurture? In the spirit of `Super Size Me' John Moe decides to become a Conservative for 30 days to see the effects.

The author's quest to become a Conservative is consistently entertaining, generally engaging, often thought provoking and occasionally poignant. For the most part, the book remains dignified in its approach to Conservativism. Sure he turns himself into a walking stereotype with a mix of stuffy business suits and cheap, patriotic t-shirts, surviving on beef jerky and Coors beer while listening to Charlie Daniels. But the author shows a fair amount respect for the views of the high profile Conservatives he meets including Rich Lowry, Bill Kristol, Jonah Goldberg and Michael Medved. Jeff Gannon on the other hand... not so much. Of course he missed meeting the even more popular and truly toxic Conservative voices like Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter. One thing I noticed was how dramatically different the Conservative message is when explained to `liberal' John Moe than when spoken to an audience of true believers. At one point the author turns off Limbaugh's program because he finds it more repellant than alluring as a siren for Conservativism. On the other hand his visit to Rexberg, Idaho, a city that had the highest percentage (92) of voters voting for Bush in 2004 was an extremely pleasant experience and the author was left wondering why the residence of his hometown of Seattle couldn't be so nice.

A few things stuck with me after I read the book. Most striking was Conservative blogger Jonah Goldberg's insistence that the left obsesses too much over hypocrisy. Goldberg stated that, "[to become a Conservative] you're going to have to give up this weird mainline addiction to pointing out hypocrisy. It's funny because hypocrisy is perhaps the most distasteful aspects of high moral, pro-family Republicans and fundamentalist Christians and here was Goldberg shamelessly embracing it. Goldberg was also quoted as saying, "I have no great pride in being a Republican". Understandable.

Being a shameless Conservative comes in handy, for instance, when the author visited the College Republican's National Convention. Despite being filled with military age males who support the `defining conflict of our generation' there seemed to be little talk of the Iraqi conflict and certainly no interest in joining it. The Convention was meeting in order to elect a new chairman. For John Moe the race pitted a charismatic, well spoken young Republican against a much less dynamic but more Karl Rovish candidate. In the end Karl Rove jr. won. "He was tainted with scandal but his loyalists disregarded that history". Why wait for Washington cynicism to corrupt you when you can be unscrupulous right out of the box?

In the end the author seems to reach a state of détente with Conservativism describing himself as a "mishmash of neo-Nixonian-quasi-Libertarianism". The funny thing is that it's very much a quality of Liberalism that permits the author to try and understand both sides of the political spectrum. John Moe says to his young son, "I don't think I love him [George W. Bush]. But I don't think I hate him either. He's just doing what he thinks he should do" There is a certain amount of naivety in his statement. By that standard Hitler and Stalin could be defended. Still, I found `Conservatize Me' to be one of the most readable books I've picked up in quite some time and I recommend it without reservation.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and humorous.......2006-12-09

John Moe strikes a balance in this work that allows him to be quite funny and yet remarkably insightful. He's able to poke fun at both conservatives and liberals in a way that encourages those of us who care about politics to lighten up a little and realized that the world is not as polarized as portrayed on TV.

A copy of this book should be mandatory reading for legislators at all levels of government.

5 out of 5 stars Conservatize Me Almost Does...But Not Quite, Thank God.......2006-10-31

John Moe is my new favorite writer! In a non-judgmental fashion (which for me, would be near impossible), he sets out on a quest to understand Red-State America. Very readable and highly entertaining.

The book I read was mostly about a young girl who was put up for adoption with her brothers and sisters. Then she was adopted by the Browder family who was exspecting a baby.
She enjoyed her new family very much. Before the baby was born she got a new puppy. This book has a very good moral to it. I reccomend this book to people who enjoy old timey stories.

      5 out of 5 stars J Jordan.......2007-01-22

This story, search for the shadow man is about a young 12 year old boy named Andy Thomas. This character was not going to like the assignment that soon waited for him. When he found out was it was he was devastated. He had to make a presentation about his family's history. This presentation must at least date back to at least the 1850's. Young Andy Thomas soon shockingly discovers that as he does research his family dates bake to 1823!!!

This book was very interesting in the way that it grabbed me, I could not stop reading. An example of this is when Andy gets the projects assignment. That is just the one example out of many how detailed this book. This novel by Joan Lowery Nixon was so interesting that I started to actually research my family's history. This book was great.

The second reason I enjoyed this novel was the description in it. When he found out he had to research his history, I felt like I was talking to him. In fact, I did start to talk to him and I found my self saying, its ok it might be fun or, it's not as bad as you think. I know that might seem crazy but when I was talking to him it did not feel like I was crazy it felt like I was really talking to how and he could hear me.

The 3rd and final reason I like this book was I felt like the character. For example, at the end of the story when he got up to do his presentation, I felt like him in sense, I felt nervous like him, hopping I would do well. Another Example of this was when he received the assignment, my jaw, along with him, dropped. In my mind I was thinking, o my gosh.

So as you can see this book was very descriptive, it made you feel like you were there and very interesting. I would rate this book 5 star. I would recommend this novel to any reader on an sixth or seventh grade reading level do to the descriptive text in this novel. If you are interested in reading this book you can find it at your public library or your school library.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Is Mysterious, Scary, And Great.......2005-04-06

In this book Shadow Man you will experience some sad, mysterious, and shocking things. Initially, the main character in the story, twelve-year-old Andy Thomas isn't thrilled with his teacher's assignment to explore family history. But when asking questions about his ancestors, he is surprised to discover a relative named Coley Joe Bonner. No one wants to discuss what went on in the family's past. Andy searches everywhere to gather information about his family's past, from the Internet to the local cemetery. The family is telling Andy to stop his investigation. "Will Andy's search hurt those he love or make them realize that it's never too late to seek justice?" Twelve-year-old Andy Thomas, who was assigned to a project where he had to find out a lot of things about his family history. He goes through old boxes, family trees, and old photo albums to find out everything he can. Andy looks through all of these old boxes and finds that there is a guy on a photo that's not shown. When Andy asks around about who he is they say his name is Coley Joe, but refuses to tell anything else about him. He goes to J.J.'s house (his best friend) to go see Miz Minna, for some information. When he asks her what he does, she says that he stole the family money and was taken out of the family bible. Knowing Andy he goes to the Internet, then the library, then to the cemetery. Doing all of that research, it gets him on to a investigation. He uses his dad's screen name, Hunter, to ask people in the chat rooms about Coley Joe. He finds out some things about Coley Joe, but that doesn't help his search. Someone in the chat room sends Andy some letters that Coley Joe sent to his girlfriend Felicity. He printed them out, set them down, and headed toward the cemetery. When he got there, a man named Elton was there and he was kind of scary. He knew some things about Coley Joe, but he mostly kept telling Andy to find out what the Bonners want to tell him. Andy is really confused about what is going on. But to find out what the family's secret is you'll have to read the book! But as a hint, the mystery to be solved is that the main character, Andy Thomas, believes that his relative Cole Joseph Bonner did not steal his family's money. The problem is that he is the only one in his family that believes this. His best friend J.J. Gasper the 7th (J.J. is James Jonathan Gasper) is trying to prove that Andy is right but the problem is J.J.'s great grandmother, Miz Minna, doesn't like the fact that Andy is digging up old family secrets that may change their town's history. So while he's digging up things, Miz Minna is giving Andy warning signs to stop researching about Coley Joe or something bad was going to happen to him. Imagine that you were Andy and your family thinks a relative in your family stole family money, what would you do? I know, you would try to figure out the real story just as Andy did. This book is filled with suspense. Andy's search filled me with many questions. The author of this book wrote this book very well and she has been called "the grande dame of young adult mysteries". She has served as vice president of the Southwest Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America and is the only four-time winner of the Edgar Allan Poe Best Juvenile Mystery Award. Joan, the author, has won awards for many of her books. So if she has won many awards and was vice president of the Southwest Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America then there is no wonder why the book is so good. In reading this book I thought that it would be excellent for kids' ages 8-15 years of age. After you read this review/article, I recommend you go and get this book.

Searching for a good Book? Try Search for the Shadowman.
This mysterious story will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see if what is around the next corner is what ends the story or makes even it more mysterious. If you read this tense mystery you will not be able to put it down. It doesn't just keep telling you what's going to happen with clues all over the story. The truth doesn't appear until the end when the story has been narrowed down to a straight line and all that needs to be done is find the proof at the end. The trouble for the main character is, the proof is at the end but it is not apparent. The mystery to be solved is that the main character, Andy Thomas, believes that his relative Cole Joseph Bonner did not steal his family's money. The problem is that he is the only one in his family that believes this. His best friend J.J. Gasper the 7th (J.J. is James Jonathan) is trying to prove Andy right but the problem is J.J.'s great grandmother, Miz Minna, doesn't like the fact that Andy is digging up old family secrets that may change their town's history. the reason that it may change the town history is because J.J. the 1st is a huge hero, and she doesn't want to loose her family honor. I would recommend this book to just about anyone who can read. I think that people would like this book because its a funny, tense, and in some ways complicated book that tells about Andy's determination to prove Coley Joe Bonner innocent.

      Book Description

Based on the classic teachings of the late Joe Karbo, who helped millions start on their way to Riches - this completely revised, updated, expanded and illustrated version of " The Lazy Man's Way to Riches " is more complete, as it includes all of the lessons learned by Dr. Nixon and Mr. Karbo from over twenty years of reader and seminar attendees feedback, since writing the original " Lazy Man".

As defined by Dr. Nixon, Riches are more than money, and include peace of mind, better relationships, joy happiness and health, as well as financial rewards.

By combining the practical wisdom of a self-help book, the sound advise of a money-making guide, and the spirituality of a Zen guide, Dr. Nixon, in effect gives the reader two books for the price of one - paying as much detail to personal development as to business.

Based on the concept that " to have more, one must first become more" - the first half is devoted to guiding the reader through self-analysis and self improvement steps. This helps each reader decide what it is you most want out of your life.

Widely used by educators, entrepreneurs, and therapists, "The Lazy Man's Way to Riches " is considered to be one of the best self-help books ever written.

The second part of this book shows you exactly how to get what you want. " The Lazy Man " has become a textbook for the entire direct response industry - including direct response mail, direct response television, direct response radio, and direct response on the Internet. All of the business trade secrets and fundamentals of direct response marketing and advertising are revealed.

This easy to read, and easy to follow book is a treasure of information, and belongs in everyone's success library!

Bonus:If you register the Amazon.com purchase of this book online at our website, you will get a free downloadable workbook (E-book) in the universal PDF format.

There is supposed to be a companion Web site that is not available and no contact with the author seems to be available. Very frustrating. There is a companion guide that is out of print and is offered used on different Web sites for over $1,000. It's ridiculous.

This book packs a double good punch!

The first is that it is the best personal growth-self help book I've ever read. Seriously. I am a self-help junkie with a large success library of self-help books and the Lazy Man Way to Riches Revised is my favorite by far!

Karbo and Nixon revised the original 70's "Lazy Man", which was great, into this true classic that works for today's world. It still has everyword of the original in it, but it also now has more up to date ideas and suggestions. Their style is simple and direct, easy to read and understand and it has tons of wonderful motivational quotes! Everyone loves a good quote!

Now here is the best thing about it ... it's easy to apply to my life so I can actually achieve the goals I set - not just read how to achieve them. Karbo and Nixon are like the wise old owls in the woods. Their wealth of experience and information about how to "get from where you are to where you want to be" has all been pulled together and put into this book. I have already made some long overdue changes needed in my life.
I'm on my 3rd reading and I find great new stuff each time I read it. It's highlighted in 3 different colors now .(Combined with the workbook that goes along with the "Lazy Man", I feel this is the best self help program ever because it helps me apply what I am learning..)

I really bought the book for the self-help part. I didn't even think about the second part of the book when I ordered it. I have to tell you - the second part of the book was a fantastic surprise. I am in sales and didn't think I had anything to learn, but I learned so much from the first part of the book I figured it wouldn't hurt to read the second half.

I'm glad I did because I learned alot from the second part of the book, which is really about direct response marketing. I don't do mail order, but I found the selling and marketing principles more helpful than any other sales or business book I've read. The part on ad writing is worth the price of the book alone. Much of the information in the second part of the book is dated, but the basic selling and marketing principles are timeless and work in today's world just as well. I am now using those principles to help build my Internet business!

1 out of 5 stars Dreaming don't pay the bills........2002-12-28

The book was a fare read. After applying the strategies and adding some belief I expected some positive results. However, as is true of most books like this, it all resulted in nothing but a let down. The second part of the book is about starting a mail-order business from your kitchen table. That didn't work either, as it costs more time and money than was indicated. I guess this book was written when people lived simpler lives and a dollar was worth a dollar. The book probably sold very well by mail-order. I guess if you write your own book on mail-order and find a way to promote it so today's society will bite, you too could take the lazy man's way to riches. Lots of luck.
