Book Description
From 1547, when Ivan the Terrible declared himself tsar of Russia, to 1712, when Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg, one of the highlights of Moscow court life was the formal presentation of diplomatic gifts to the tsar. These fabulous offerings have been preserved intact in the Moscow Kremlin Armory, in a collection that cannot be matched by any other royal treasury in the world.
Now many of these objects are published in this gloriously illustrated volume-the first in English on the subject-that accompanies a major exhibition at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Ranging from arms and armor and exquisite textiles to spectacular works in gold and silver, gifts received by the tsars are masterpieces of the decorative arts-and afford a fascinating glimpse of international relations during a period when Russia emerged as a world power.

Faberge Eggs.......2007-04-05
The information contained in this book was easily accessed and was straight-forward in its content. This book is lovely and displays nicely as a coffee table book. The only problem I found with it is that some eggs were omitted. The one coming to mind is the Military Egg. I have seen this egg and though it is unusual in its lack of jewels, its simplicity deserves mention. I believe that there is one, maybe two more omitted, but as I am writing this, I am unable to bring those to mind. This is a beautiful book, but is not definitive as the best book to answer questions regarding the Faberge eggs.
A Passion of Mine.......2006-04-30
As an egg artist of Fabarge style egg art, I highly recommend this book to other artists as well as those who are not interested in actually making this type of art. You will still be moved.
Fabulous Faberge.......2005-08-30
Having just recently been in the Armoury at the Kremlin and seeing the Faberge Eggs they have there and being absolutely blown away by them I was very pleased to be able to purchase this book even though is was the 1990 edition.
The book shows the eggs in close up often with the fancy inside shown in more detail and a small essay on each one, how it was made and the significance of what it portrays.
They are the most fabulous things not neccessarily because of the jewels involved (which are just wonderful) but mainly because of the incredible workmanship involved in the mechanics of them I can never forget the Trans Siberian Egg with the little solid gold five carriage and engine train which goes by clockwork!
The book was just great especially showing eggs I haven't seen if you are interested in these extraordinary eggs I recommend it to you wholeheartedly.
Beautifully photographed and intelligently described.......2000-05-12
This book is worthwhile whether the reader wants an introduction to Faberge easter eggs or is already familiar with these masterpieces. It provides a history of Peter Carl Faberge and his works. It includes photographs of forty easter eggs, most of them being the Imperial easter eggs which were gifts from Alexander III and Nicholas II to their wives or the dowager empress. Other less well known but also spectacular eggs are included. The photographs show the eggs and surprises to their best advantage. The corresponding descriptions provide information about the significance of each egg. There were some eggs in this book that I had never seen in other books, including Imperial easter eggs that apparently have not been part of recent museum tours. I first bought the Christopher Forbes book in paperback, but returned it because I was disappointed with it. I will be keeping this one.

Book Description
From Native American face masks to German bread boards, from Tibetan prayer tables to Moroccan boats, the versatility of wood is astonishing. Here is the first worldwide survey, outlining the many types of wood and their uses, and the woodworking techniques employed around the globe.
Since prehistoric times, wood has been used for fire, shelter, tools, weapons, and all types of implements and containers. Some of the civilized world's most significant inventionsthe wheel, the printing press, and the first calculator, the abacuswere developed using wood. Today, its uses are just as varied, and in many cultures the Tree of Life represents the very force of life itself.
This book is organized into seven main sections, with over seventy topics: The Raw Materialfrom softwoods and hardwoods to tropical plants and timber; Carving and Shaping Woodfrom incising and stamping, relief carving and intaglio carving, to turning and bending; Joineryfrom fixings and fastenings to slots and sockets; Decorating and Finishingfrom marquetry and inlay, paint and lacquer, to metallic finishes and embellishment; Wood at Workfrom bowls and buckets, furniture and implements, to modes of transport and buildings; Heart and Soulfrom games and toys, dolls and puppets, to ritual and ceremony; and Toolsfrom axes and adzes, chisels and saws, to lathes and planes.
With over 800 illustrations, a glossary, information on where to see collections, and a bibliography and index, this is an exhaustive survey of the many and varied uses of one of our most precious natural resources. 815 illustrations, 634 in colo
Customer Reviews:
Nice coffee-table book.......2004-08-05
This might perhaps be regarded as a modern and 'light' version of the 'International Book of Wood' (1976). By content this is not half what the 'International Book of Wood' was, but times change. This new book is splendidly printed and should do a great job of infecting the reader with enthousiasm for wood. The pictures are almost exclusively full color photographs of a uniformly good quality. As long as the reader keeps in mind that this is a coffee-table book only and that the author does not exert himself in trying to get his details right, but limits himself to presenting a good story (just staying in the ballpark), this will be most enjoyable.
Book Description
$21.95 hardcover * 1-58685-032-6 * March 8-1/2 x 8-1/2 in, 96 pp, 135 Color Photographs, Rights: W, Design In their sixth book, Mexican Details, designers Karen Witynski and Joe P. Carr travel through Mexico and the Southwest in celebration of the character-rich details of Mexican furniture, architectural elements, and handcrafted accents that resonate with beauty and originality. From chip-carved benches and hand-hewn tortilla tables to painted trunks and carved-stone moldings, the soulful nature of Mexican design abounds. Decorative accents include intricately woven textiles, glazed ceramics, wooden masks, and folk art objects that bear evidence of the hands that crafted them. Carr and Witynski reveal in vibrant detail how mesquite doors can be newly fashioned into console and coffee tables, iron window grilles are converted to headboards, and stone water filters blossom as flower planters. These once-utilitarian elements take on creative new roles in modern-day homes, adding beauty and character to every corner. Featuring brilliant close-up photographs by Witynski, Mexican Details is alive with creative and fresh Mexican elements.

ideas.......2005-07-25
I have just bought a house in Mexico, and find this book most inspirational for my remodelling work and for any future building! Super authentic ideas.
I Love this book!!.......2004-11-25
I have checked out as many interior design books on Mexican style as I could find and being a researcher by profession that was a lot. This is my favorite--the colors of the rooms are warm and vibrant and exactly what I had envisaged in my mind's eye. I loved each page and would recommend buying this if you had to pick just one on this subject.
Book Description
The "house" is one of American folk art's most popular and prominent motifs, and this beautiful, authoritative volume is the first of its kind to explore this symbol in all major folk art media. The book is also a record of America's lost architectural heritage-- many of the buildings featured are no longer standing.
Each chapter focuses on a specific folk art category and includes an in-depth, detailed introduction to the subject followed by a comprehensive gallery of images accompanied by extended captions that provide a symbolic, social, and economic context for each piece. Every folk art format is featured: quilts, rugs, needlework, furnishings, paintings, and drawings, among others. The unique folk art objects presented are culled from dealers' wares, unpublished private and corporate collections, auction houses, and major folk art museums in the country.
With its wealth of photography and insightful text, and introduction by Gerard C. Wertkin, Director of the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City, Home Sweet Home is an excellent resource for collectors, history and nostalgia buffs, and those interested in Americana.
Customer Reviews:
A great read as well as a beautiful display book........2001-09-28
I recently bought Home Sweet Home because I am interested in American art and crafts, and it is full of beautiful pieces of art. More importantly, though, I really felt like I was learning about the lives and history of early Americans, through their artwork. Especially in an uncertain time like this, it was somehow touching to get such an intimate view into how early Americans depicted their homes and communities. I'm planning to buy several copies for Christmas presents!

Marie Antoinette.......2007-05-21
Beautiful book with nice pictures of several places on where Queen Marie Antoinette left her signature. Her rooms, gardens, Hameau, bodoire are beautifully described in this nice work. I recommend it for all who are interested in Marie Antoinette.
The Marie Antoinette book you simply must have!!.......2007-02-13
If you wish to be propelled into her realm, then look no further. I have read many books about Marie Antoinette and this is one of my favourites. The basic text is accompanied by the most wonderful photographs, portraits and furniture details that I have seen anywhere. Highly recommended.
Small but Interesting.......2007-01-11
This book is fairly small but it has some interesting tid bits about Marie Antoinette. The focus of this book is mainly on the royal's furniture and accessories. It doesn't go too much into Marie Antoinette's history. An interesting book for any Marie Antoinette fan.
LOVELY!!!.......2006-10-13
This book has pictures which I have found no where else concerning life at Marie-Antoinette's Petit Trianon. Her gambling purse, her keys, her mementoes, as well as rare sketches of herself and her family are gathered into one spell-binding collection of delight. Very satisfying for those hungry for details of the queen's private life. For those unable to travel to the gardens of Versailles, there are amazing photos. Exquisite but bitter sweet, considering the sad events which were about to befall the royal family!
A piece of carp.......2004-12-25
I was extremely disappointed in this book. This is a junk book you'd pick up at a souvenier shop. It takes a worthier and more particular kind of person to appreciate entire pages devoted to a few inches of motif taking up entire pages.

Book Description
Examining the folk influences on the decoration of Chinese houses and their traditional methods of construction, this intriguing book also studies such ancient customs of fengshui, the system of divination that relied on the spirits of the landscape to reveal the suitability of a site for building. Illustrated with wood block prints, original line drawings, and the author's own photographs, this first ever book on the cultural aspect of the Chinese house portrays a living folk tradition of amazing resilience.
Customer Reviews:
Great for young people.......2002-01-09
This book might be more appropriately filed under 'young readers'. First, it is a small book, hardly more than a paperback. Second, it does not go into any depth about Chinese houses, but gives more of a conversational style overview of culture and history. Illustrations are few and far between. There are no plans, elevations, or serious architectural drawings. Any seventh grader with a report due should be thrilled to find this book. Anyone else will be left wanting. How odd - it is an Oxford University publication.

Customer Reviews:
A good resource for basic information on Folk Art.......2006-08-17
This book tries to cover a lot of ground on a very broad and subtle topic. Unfortunately, no one can really become an expert on American Folk Art by simply reading this or any other book. The book does provide a good overview of the various collecting areas of American Folk Art and might be a good place to start for someone new to the field.
