Book Description

In cyberspace, no one can hear you scream.

Instead of preparing for her high school graduation, Lucy Kincaid is facing a vicious execution. Lured by an online predator, she’s destined to die horribly–live on the Internet–while hundreds of heartless viewers watch and vote on the method of her slaughter. Her family’s only hope rests with Kate Donovan, an FBI agent who took on the same sadistic killer once before . . . and lost. Blamed for another girl’s gruesome murder, Kate’s been fighting to clear her name. But she agrees to join the hunt for Lucy–and reluctantly steps back into her worst nightmare.

With time running out before the bloody webcast airs, Kate teams up with forensic psychiatrist Dillon Kincaid to get inside the head of her twisted quarry, zero in on his chamber of horrors, and reach Lucy before grim history repeats itself and another innocent’s brutal death goes hideously live.

Face the fear. Speak its name. See its face.

1 out of 5 stars deeped upsetting.......2007-10-07

Although this author writes a good story, I find the context of this novel too deeply unsettling to ever read another novel by this author. I found what happened to Lucy absolutely horrifying and was unable to put the story completely out of my mind and even had nightmares. I do read other novels about serial killers, but this was just too awful. I do not read books to have nightmares about them, so I just will not read anymore of her novels.

I HAVE READ 6 OF ALLISON BRENNAN'S BOOKS. THE PREY, THE HUNT (MY FAVORITE OF THE THREE) AND THE KILL. WHAT MADE ME DECIDE TO GET INTO THE EVIL SERIES, WAS THE FACT NICK THOMAS (THE HUNT) WAS THE LEAD MALE IN THE FIRST BOOK, SPEAK NO EVIL. THOUGH I REALLY ENJOYED ALL THREE BOOKS OF THE EVIL SERIES, I WANTED MORE IN THE END ABOUT PATRICK. IS HE GOING TO WAKE UP FROM THE COMA AND HAVE HIS OWN STORY? AND WHAT ABOUT JACK'S STORY.WILL WE EVER LEARN THE WHATS AND WHYS OF HIS LIFE DURING THE ELEVEN YEARS HE HAS BEEN GONE FROM THE KINCAID FAMILY. DOES CARINA AND NICK TIE THE KNOT? DOES CONNOR AND JUILA'S STORY END WITH OUT AN ENDING? HOPEFULLY THE NEW BOOK DUE OUT IN EARLY 2008, WILL PICK UP ON THESE LOOSE ENDS, LIKE SPEAK NO EVIL DID FOR THE PREY , THE HUNT AND THE KILL. IT WAS, ALSO, GOOD TO SEE QUINN PETERSON WAS STILL KEEPING THINGS AT THE FBI RUNNING AND HAVING MARINDA TO HELP LUCY. I LIKE BOOK SERIES THAT LET YOU REVISIT OTHER CHARACTERS I HAVE READ ABOUT, SO I HOPE MS BRENNAN CONTINUES TO CONNECT HER'S IN FUTURE BOOKS. IF YOU ENJOY BOOKS THAT LET YOU REVISIT AND CONNECT, PLEASE CHECK OUT MARIAH STEWERT. SHE IS ONE OF THE VERY BEST,IF NOT THE BEST, AT WRITING NEW BOOKS THAT INCORPORATE CHARACTERS FROM HER OTHER BOOKS.

2 out of 5 stars Disturbing.......2007-08-13

I don't know why this book disturbed me so much, but it did. Maybe it's because we'd gotten to know the Kincaid family over the past two books, and I was a bit surprised to see the brutality leveled at so many of them. Regardless though, it made me very disturbed.

This series was my first try with Allison Brennan. However, while the books were well-written, they were way too graphic and violent for my tastes. A good story can still be told without that level of violence, or such graphic storytelling.

I don't think I'll be checking out anything more of hers.

I couldn't put this one down. I only wish i had read the other books before. I can't wait to go back and read more about the characters.

I purchased this book for my freshman daughter, who is in Pre-AP English class. She says it has made reading and understanding Romeo and Juliet easy.

4 out of 5 stars NOW I get it!.......2005-12-24

Echoing the review below...this helped me understand many things I was missing - even in other "helper" versions. After a few run-throughs of the "No Fear" side, you're ready for the "Real Shakespeare" side. Fabulous for students...of any age!

4 out of 5 stars No Fear is the best Shakespeare Ever.......2004-06-30

This is only partially a review of the story, but mostly a review on how much I love the No Fear series. It's SO useful. You have Shakespeare on one page, and the 'translation' into modern English on one page. I understand Shakespeare so much better now. I thought I understood Shakespeare when I read version where you have a footnote at the bottom saying what 'grandshire phrase' or something means. I did get the gist of it, but now I understand what the characters are saying and feeling, and I get all the little jokes. I can appreciate Shakespeare now, which was impossible before (then again, I'm only 12, it's probably easier for other people).

Not to mention in other versions I would read a little bit, glance down at the footnotes, read, glance down, re-read to find the word in the footnote, et cetera and it was very tedious. Now I just read a page of Shakespeare and then a page of modern, or vice versa. I do vice versa because then I understand how the character feels before reading the lines out loud, making this version very useful for putting on the play.

There is one problem. In most editions, you have various essays and notes. They don't have this in here. I don't take of stars for this because I personally never read the essays, but some people might.

Anyway, the story itself. Shakespeare is very poetic, and you can appreciate it more if you know what he's talking about. How ever, I hate 'love at first sight' with a burning passion. If you get over that, the characters and plot are engaging.

I read this because I was in the play. But this edition is so good I'm going to read other Shakespeare plays for my own enjoyment.

Thich Nhat Hanh always invites us to look deeply, and he does so once again in No Death, No Fear. Recognizing interconnections, Nhat Hanh brings us to beginnings, how they depend on endings, and how they are but temporary manifestations. Everything endures, he says, but in different forms. And this isn't just a palliative to make us feel better for a while--Nhat Hanh's philosophy of Interbeing takes the long view, challenging us to open our eyes to subtle transformations. He shows how extraordinary things happen when we are fully present with others and at peace with ourselves, both of which require openness and deep looking. In his bestselling style of easy prose, compelling anecdotes, and pragmatic advice, Nhat Hanh gradually drains the force out of grief and fear, transforming them into happiness and insightful living. Death doesn't have to be a roadblock, and in No Death, No Fear Thich Nhat Hanh shows us the way around. --Brian Bruya

Book Description

Beloved Buddhist teacher and poet Thich Nhat Hanh offered the world much-needed words of calming wisdom in his previous book, Anger-a coast-to-coast bestseller in both hardcover and paperback.

Now, in a book both timely and timeless, he tackles a subject that has been contemplated by Buddhist monks and nuns for twenty-five hundred years-and an eternal mystery that touches us all: What is death? Through Zen parables, guided meditations, and personal stories, he explodes the traditional myths of how we live and die. Even more, Thich Nhat Hanh shows us a way to live a life unfettered by fear.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars When dealing with such a fear filled topic, this is calming.......2007-06-21

Hanh quickly grabs the reader's attention and mindfully drifts off in euphamism and metaphor as he meanders over, under and through this difficult topic (difficult for most people).

Calming in his approach to death, life, beginning (no beginning) and end (no end), the author seems to have an excellent hold on his spiritual beliefs and his desire to share. For those of any and all faiths, death is a frightening subject, but Hanh paints a wonderful picture of immortality through all that a person touches in his/her life.

The only, and I stress only, misgiving I found with this short read are the over-used metaphorical analysis between human life and that of an oceanic wave. I wish the author could draw similarities shared by all breathing life organisms, rather than something as translucent as water (although I think I understand WHY he often describes life in terms of water).

I would certainly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars No Death, No Fear.......2007-06-13

I read this book after the passing of my Grandparents and it helped me deal with their passing. I recommend this book to anyone who is searching for answers about life and death. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars The best book for grief!.......2007-05-30

This is an incredible book. If one is not familiar with Buddhism, one must
read past some aspects of it that most of us might not fully believe, mainly, reincarnation, which Thich Nhat Hahn and other Buddhists do believe. That said, the prayers to recite for the dying, and the philosophy that nothing ever dies is invaluable. It's hard to let go of loved ones, so to think of it as simply returning to our physical elements, dissolving into the earth, evaporating to become the clouds, can give one some comfort. If you haven't read other works by Thich Nhat Hahn, I don't know if this book will be as powerful for you, but I think that anyone can gain great insight from it, and hopefully, some inner peace. I have given many copies as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing To Be Afraid Of.......2007-04-10

"Nothing to be afraid of." R.D.Laing once stated that that line was both the ultimate terror and the ultimate reassurance. In "No Death, No Fear"
Thich Nhat Hanh helps us come to terms with our undeniable fear of death. As usual, he asks us not to bury our proverbial heads in the proverbial sand, but rather to look deeply and mindfully into our lives and how we typically live in the automatic pilot mode. He teaches us what produces our dissatisfaction with our lives, such as living in the past, worrying about the future, and creating prerequisites for our happiness that are really quite arbitrary and unnecessary.
The book is about death, but more to the point, it is about life. Thich Nhat Hanh's wisdom helps assuage our fears and enables us to get out of our own way. This is an important book.

4 out of 5 stars Slow, but meditative read.......2007-03-09

I have read at least five of this auther's books. This one seems to be a little more slow going than the others, but none the less challenges the reader to as always think deeply about the most painful and frightening aspect of human Life - Death.

Visual Chronicles is a must have book for any crafter or artist. Beginning artists will learn new skills and advanced artists will be re-energized. The authors are lighthearted and funny and the projects are easy to follow. Once you make your own personal palette, you will see everything in life differently. By the end of this book, you will be an artist and you'll have made two new best friends. Read this book! I can't wait for the next book by these talented sisters.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for new art journalists.......2007-09-13

This was the first book I read when I learned there was such a thing as art journaling. I'm a photographer and not a painter, but I love to work with my hands and with paint and glue and expressing myself on paper. This book showed me from the start that I don't have to be a painter or art student to begin art journaling; it took all the intimidation away and gave me the practical tools and encouragement I needed to begin this new art form for me. The written style of the book is personal and conversational, and I've njoyed reading it, not to mention learning so much, from the first application of the glue stick up.

this book was exactly what i was looking for. It explains in simple and easy to understand terms, how to go about jornaling on your collaged books, which can also extend to scrapbooking. An essential guide book for the beginner or advanced mixed media artist and scrapbooker. Definately reccomended

If you are new to Visual Journaling, this is a must have book. Wonderful directions for getting started and getting yourself to open up to this unique experience. Even if you don't think of yourself as artistic, this book will pull it out and you'll enjoy the journey.

5 out of 5 stars staying creative in a decidedly uncreative world..........2007-07-25

I have every book on art journaling known to man. Quite a few on regular journaling, too. And a fair bit on paper arts. I might just have a small, tiny book *addiction*. That's neither here nor there.

What IS both here and there is that I lusted after this book before it came out. I think I may have actually scared some people at B&N with the crazy-eyed, wild-haired begging for them to hurry up and get it in. (I'd preordered it here, but it was taking just way too long. Yes, I know they ship the first day. That's beside the point. I'm not so good with instant gratification.)

So when it came in from Amazon, the first thing I did was toss aside the other filler books I bought to get the free shipping and flopped down on the floor with Visual Chronicles.

An hour later, when I came up for air, the first thing I did was prepaint some shoes. SHOES, people! Who woulda thunk of creating a literal *walking journal*? Evidently, Linda and Karen.

From that first set of shoes until now, I keep finding pieces of this book in things that I do, artwise. It's a revolutionary book in a very quiet way -- making you think about both the extraordinary and the everyday. Those little "Have No Fear" quotes (which one reviewer obviously didn't understand to be set-offs for tidbit tips) get repeated in my head when I'm stuck, or needing a dose of inspiration. And the projects, while not my typical style, have been something I've gone back to again and again. (The miniprompt book and the color glossary in particular.) And I definitely didn't find any of it to be condescending -- maybe because I really see the authors (through their writing here) as friends. Highly enthusiastic, you-can-do-it cheerleader friends, wanting to share a little bit of their creative spirits with everyone, rather than hoarding it all for themselves.

Like I said, I've got a shelf full of journaling books. Among those, there are probably a dozen that I refer back to again and again, and Visual Chronicles is one of those. I've never regretted buying it, or keeping it at the ready -- because that inspiration that's so freely given is priceless.

eBook Special Feature: Includes two original articles "The Writing of Fearless Jones" and "Black to the Future" both penned by Walter Mosley and a chapter excerpt of BAD BOY BRAWLY BROWN. ike most of us, Paris Minton is a man who would just as soon walk away from trouble as stand up to it. But in 1950s Los Angeles, sometimes trouble just comes and gets you. Bartholomew "BB" Perry is missing and wanted for murder - and the reputation of his very proper and influential aunt, Winifred L. Nice, is at stake. She uses her connections to get tough cop Jefferson T. Hill on the case, and when he goes missing too, Paris and Fearless Jones are double-crossed into taking a case that will turn out to be the most riveting ride of their lives. Paris and Fearless find themselves drawn deep into a world of conflict and corruption, rife with shady dealings and rogue lawmen - not to mention dangerous women. More corpses keep turning up, and, worst of all, Paris doubts that BB, the adulterous thief whose name he's trying to clear, is innocent after all. But if he can find his way out of trouble and escape with his life, Paris Minton just might become an accidental hero. Buzzing with energy, excitement, and suspense, this is yet another example of why the New York Times calls Walter Mosley "one of America's best mystery writers."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Another Good Mosley Crime Novel.......2007-07-17

Walter Mosley, the master of mysteries and crime stories, has created another masterpiece with Fear of the Dark. This intriguing novel, set in circa 1950 Los Angeles, is the third in the Fearless Jones and Paris Minton series.

Paris, an unassuming used bookstore owner, unwittingly gets involved in a murder and extortion plot. Paris consults his friend Fearless, a strong, handsome and respected/dreaded, body guard. Together they wade through the morass created by an eclectic cast of characters; one of which is Paris' bungling cousin, Ulysses.

Mosley skillfully places his literary pearls and invites the reader to the scavenger hunt. Discovering who, what, where, when and why with Paris and Fearless was an exciting, comical, and surprising adventure. Mosley continues to capture and keep readers' attention through skillful story telling, vivid language, and short chapters. I had to force myself to stop reading so that I would not miss my stop on the train.

Laughing out loud, shaking my head in disbelief, and raising my eyebrows in astonishment were just a few of my emotional responses while reading this novel. Fear of the Dark is definitely a welcome addition to my library. I'm looking forward to reading Mr. Mosley's next release.

5 out of 5 stars Beware the Evil Eye!.......2007-05-19

Fearless Jones and Paris Minton are back doing another off-the-books investigation that takes them down the dark alleys of 1956 Los Angeles. The city, especially the areas where Fearless and Paris live as well as the darkness their quest takes them through, is violent and filled with civil unrest.

In this book, Paris is haunted by family. His cousin Useless (Ulysses S. Grant IV) shows up at an inopportune moment and things go downhill quickly from there. Not long after Paris turns Useless from his door, Paris gets interrupted by his current girlfriend's current boyfriend. Paris flees for his life (his first rule of operation) and looks up Fearless for backup. But by the time they return to Paris's bookshop, there's a dead man lying there.

No sooner than Fearless and Parish have the body hidden away so no one will take the fall for murdering him than Paris's aunt Three Hearts arrives and begins threatening Paris. Since her evil eye is known to kill, Paris aims to please.

FEAR OF THE DARK felt a lot like the other two books, but that's good. THe investigation proceeds at a nice clip and the characters are always fun.

Mosley also writes the Easy Rawlins mysteries. Of late, those have been set in the early 1960s. Easy is a married man and at least twenty years older than Paris and Fearless. Paris narrates, and his voice is at once young and aged, savvy and naive.

Mosley's pacing in this book will keep readers flipping pages late into the the night. He seems more comfortable at this length than he has in previous novels. There's also more back story and a better view of California at the time in this one. His dialogue seems dead-on and so do his characters.

If you're new to Mosley's work, I'd recommend DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS first. The FEAR series can be read pretty much in what order you find them.

4 out of 5 stars Paris Minton's Fear Makes Him Brave.......2007-04-20

If you have not yet read Fearless Jones and Fear Itself (the first two books in the Fearless Jones series), I strongly urge you to do so before reading Fear of the Dark. Both of those books are better written and more entertaining than Fear of the Dark. Without the perspective that those books give you on Fearless Jones and Paris Minton, you'll like Fear of the Dark less than you might.

Paris Minton is a most unusual character for Walter Mosley. Paris is the owner of a used bookstore in Watts in the mid-1950s that he has to subsidize with a part-time job. Minton is a largely self-educated black man from Louisiana who came to California to find libraries that were open to all. His store's books are discards from local libraries. He has achieved a fragile kind of peaceful life, living and working in his bookstore (and reading when there are no customers, which is often). His head is full of classic literature (the oldest Greeks are his favorites) and carries a heroic perspective into every situation: They only trouble is, he's no hero. Paris is afraid of everything and almost everyone.

How does Paris cope? He has the equivalent of Dumbo's magic feather in the swashbuckling Fearless Jones, a modern archetype for the knight errant. Whenever trouble looms, Paris calls on Fearless for help. In many cases, Fearless's reputation is enough to solve the problem. But when rough stuff is needed, Fearless is your man. A World War II hero, Fearless met when Minton when Minton spontaneously bought Jones a drink during the post-war celebration. "He appreciated my generosity and gave me a lifetime of friendship for a single shot of scotch." As you can see, Mr. Mosley writes like an angel. Minton, the man of logic, reciprocates by helping Fearless solve problems where his bravery and reputation are not enough.

The two characters remind me of a Star Trek episode where a transporter malfunctions and Captain Kirk is divided into two people, one who is totally dominant and carnal and the other who is caring and weak. Paris and Fearless are similarly opposites, yet totally compatible as though they came from the same source. Obviously, Mr. Mosley is equally fascinated with how the opposite ways of pursuing the masculine life play out.

Since Paris operates in a tough area, he won't open his door for just anyone. He has an elaborate series of mirrors that allow him to see who wants in. When the mirrors show that his cousin Ulysses S. Grant IV (generally referred to as "Useless") is at the front door, Paris turns Useless away. Why? The last time he let Useless in, Paris almost ended in being framed for a robbery that Useless had done. No fool, Paris isn't about to repeat that mistake. "Useless was like monosodium glutamate for problems; he brought out the evil essence and magnified it." Useless leaves a cryptic message for his mother with Paris, "Tell Three Hearts that there's a man named Hector wrote my name on a black slip'a paper. Tell her that I tried to make it work with Angel, but I guess I was mudfoot just like she said."

Three weeks earlier, Paris had found his own way into trouble. He rescued a skinny young white woman named Jessa Brown who was trying to run a con on a small restaurant. The two became lovers . . . which becomes a problem when Jessa's ex-boyfriend Tiny (who is anything but) shows up at the bookstore while they two were engaged with one another on the floor.

Life gets more complicated from there. First, Tiny shows up dead in the bookstore. Then, Aunt Three Hearts shows up looking for Useless, and Paris cannot turn her down. Why? She has a reputation for putting the Evil Eye on those who don't do her wishes. Fearless Jones is tied up protecting Milo Sweet, the bail bondsman, from a dangerous felon, but Fearless does double duty in helping Paris as well.

It soon becomes clear that Useless has gotten himself into some very dangerous waters. Paris and Fearless set out to unravel the mystery and put the pieces back together again.

I found Fear of the Dark to be less interesting than the earlier two books in the series because the secondary characters and their motives are much less inspiring in Fear of the Dark. Why would anyone other than his mother care about Useless? As fine a woman as Three Hearts is, it's not as rewarding as it might be to read about her trying to save her son from himself. You know that Useless will just end up in some new trouble. There's also a lot of sexual innuendo in the book that didn't really advance the story or develop the characters beyond where they were at the end of Fear Itself.

But if you enjoy Paris Minton as a character, I think you'll feel rewarded for reading the book. The best part of the story is how Paris ends up taking on lots of danger so that he can avoid things that he's even more afraid of. Yes, a frightened man can be brave . . . especially when all is required is intellectual courage. Just don't have your highest expectations in place when you begin Fear of the Dark (a good double play on Paris's fear of dark places and society's fear of the African-American male).

5 out of 5 stars Courage is in the Eye of the Beholder.......2007-04-19

Walter Mosley's Fear of the Dark is the third in a series in which we find Paris Minton, the struggling bookstore owner amidst the criminal element of South Central Los Angeles during the 1950s. Once again, trouble comes looking for Paris and although reluctant to plunge head first into a dangerous situation, Paris fails to realize his own courage as he goes about doing what must be done.

To shield his aunt Three Hearts from danger, Paris, and his companion/protector, Fearless Jones, set out to find Three Hearts' wayward son Ulysses S. Grant IV (a.k.a. Useless) and uncover a blackmail scheme that Useless is at the center of. Paris and Fearless quickly learn that they are not the only ones searching for Useless. The criminals seeking Useless do not hesitate to leave a trail of lifeless bodies and at anytime Paris and Fearless could end up amongst the dead.

Fear of the Dark is a light and crisp murder mystery. Mr. Mosley's vivid depiction of Paris' surroundings was amazing. I walked the streets with Paris and entered the same dark and dank places. Fearless was not Paris' only companion, I was there too. Mr. Mosley's ability to effortlessly spin creative and thought-provoking social commentary/messages intrigue me to no end.

4 out of 5 stars Never Fear when Paris is on the Case.......2007-03-15

This is the third in the series, and anyone who has read all three know that Fearless Jones is only a tangential character and that Paris Minton is the true center of these stories. This one begins with a knock on Paris' door by his cousin 'Useless' (Ulysses S Grant IV) who once again brings mayhem and havoc to Paris' life. Useless is one of those people who seem to always bring trouble to himself and everyone around him. On top of that is his mother Three-Hearts (which Mosley never explains) who is known to have the
'evil eye' and is not afraid to use it.

The story itself is interesting for the sociology of 1950s Los Angeles where white men can be blackmailed for their relationships with "negro" woman (of course they are also adulterers and embezzlers, but that's not really here or there). There is a great sequence where two cops (who have been hounding Paris) are cut down and put in their place by a white bank exec that they are trying to help. What is said and left unsaid in the dialogue says so much about 'Eisenhower' America and the relationships between the races at that time.

Even Mosley has problems with writing about African-Americans; Paris is constantly commenting on the shades of brown (chocolate, cafe au lait, high yellow, copper, etc)people are and can't decide what the characters should call each other or themselves (colored, negro, the "N" word are all thrown around). It's interesting to see how a "blackman" who lived through those times, looks back on a culture that is now lost to us all.

The story is interesting, the people too, and the plot moves along nice and steady without any surprises thrown in for shock value; all in all a good effort.

5 out of 5 stars No need to avoid Shakespeare anymore.......2005-04-12

I consider myself to be a reasonably literate individual but, I have always avoided Shakespeare since I cannot make sense of the text. But now, I have fianally read Macbeth because, with "No Fear Shakespeare," each left hand page is written in the original whereas the right hand page is a plain English translation. So now I know, that when a porter says "it makes him stand to and not stand to," he is not referring about someone standing up on his feet. Instead, it means that alcoholic drinks make a man have an erection but then, lose the erection. How true is that and how cool is it to be able to understand that? Seriously, Macbeth is a great tale of ambition, deception and conscience. Thanks to this innovative book, I was able to read the original, then, after reading each page, I referred to the translation so I could understand. It was fun to read lines in the original, try to work out what I thought it meant and then check whether I was right. I recommend this as a way finally read and appreciate Macbeth.

5 out of 5 stars very helpful.......2005-03-19

The translation is clear and it helps immensely that it is side by side with the actual text. That way it's easy to fully understand the meaning behing Shakespeare's language.

5 out of 5 stars Psychology of the Human Mind.......2003-09-21

.
Suprisingly well explained. There are other models of human consciousness, such as Freud, or as Sri Aurobindo's, Essays on the Gita, or that of the Buddhist thought in Chogyam Trungpa.

Here the mind exists as:

1. The Conscious Ego Level, Our Lower Self - where we consciously decide our thoughts and actions.

2. The Unconscious Egotistical Child Level, also part of our Lower Self - it is here we unconsciously create faulty habitual thought patterns with decisions based on our avoidance of pain formed from our childhood lack of reason and continued in such irrational and detrimental ways carried into our adulthood. These habitual thought patterns then unconsciously react automatically in negative schematics from original childhood thinking and need to be re-patterned with our adult thoughts, which we do by acknowledging, re-experiencing and transforming such fears into positive courage of evolutionary growth.

3. The Supraconscious Higher Universal Self - this is what many others would label our higher self, the universal mind, the ccollective conscious that exists within ourselfs, the no-self, etc. This is our true self, the calm, knowing, patient self with resiliency and creativity of reacting in such a way beyond all negativity.

The secret to such succesful thought, peace of mind and self honesty, along with congruent actions, is that of finding the higher self and becoming a true observer of both the Lower Self - Conscious Ego, and that of the Unconscious Ego Self, which both produce the subsequent Mask Self, the false idealized image our Lower Self falsely believes we must be. In turn, we loose this mask, observe it and all our thoughts, both conscious and unconscious reactions, and subsequent actions, all as a true outsider, observing as our inside true higher self.

Of course there is much more to thinking, evil, fear and courage and this is well defined and outlined.

5 out of 5 stars Deep, clear, true........2003-04-02

This is one of the best books I have read on psychology and spirituality. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to go deep into themselves, to anybody who really loves truth.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!!.......2001-10-02

This book will kick your lower-self-... ...But you better be
serious about 'knowing thyself' or you'll never make it thru it.
The first half of the book is kind of depressing, as you see how
much work there is to do, but then you realize, you've been doing
the work all along...just using different words. An entire book could be written on every paragraph - there is so much pertinent information. I felt like the 'entity' who gave this was sitting in my brain, watching every neuron firing (or not) and seeing how and why it expresses itself in the physical world. Highly reccomended.

5 out of 5 stars You'll be amazed.......1999-08-05

This book changes the usual way we all have of thinking about our problems. The teachings in this book leads us to discover the roots of our emotional problems. You'll probably be amazed at how much you will discover about yourself, your mind and your needs. You may actually "feel" the release of life energy with every spiritual discovery you make about youserlf. Truly incredible.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening! This book changed my life........1997-07-31

This is the most enlightening book I have ever read and it changed my life. This book is about understanding how we think and operate as thinking, feeling, spiritual beings. It gets to the core of who we are and how to become truly at peace with ourselves and the world. All of the Pathwork books by Eva Pierrakos are great. I have also read "Creating Union" which is similar but focuses on relationships with others, lovers, friends, family, etc. I love the fact that there is no judgment in who we are. We are just human beings doing the best we can, and we will change when we are ready to change, and that's ok. We are always beautiful in God's / the Universe's eyes

Book Description

For this book, author Diane Conway approached a police officer, a waitress, a politician, a lawyer, a cab driver, and many others, and asked them each the same question: "What would you do if you had no fear?" The results, chronicled in this book, were both surprising and enlightening. Her respondents told her their secrets, their long-hidden dreams, and their fears. Their dreams included quitting mind-numbing jobs, applying to medical school, buying tickets to South America, finding true love, quitting drinking, or having an affair. The distance between dreaming and doing, according to Conway, is surprisingly short. In What Would You Do If You Had No Fear? her fresh voice and "Studs Terkel in drag persona" challenge readers to stop, open their hearts, and truly live. Included are self-tests, quizzes, growth exercises, and inspiring quotes for realizing one's fear-free potential.

5 out of 5 stars Loved It.......2007-01-13

Just what I needed to refocus and prioritize after 20 years in the same job. This was an instant sabbatical for me. Gave me the energy boost I needed to move forward.

5 out of 5 stars a better way to challenge yourself!.......2006-05-16

This book is fantastic in pushing us all to our very limits, posing the best of the best "what if" questions, and ecouraging us to act on them! So much fun to read, dream, and answer with action-- what would you do if you had no fear???

3 out of 5 stars What would You do I you had no fear?.......2005-09-24

A light delightful read that offers hope to those who feel caught in a life of few choices. It's a basic follow-your-heart advice manual which also questions how much one depends on money for happiness.

3 out of 5 stars Inspiration: yes; Substance: no.......2005-06-30

A magazine article prompted me to buy this book. Conway's humor's engaging, and the anecdotes are inspiring. But the book stops there.

Each section is headed with an aspect of the title's question:

*What would you do [if you had no fear]?
*Who would you be [if you had no fear]?
*Where would you go [if you had no fear]?

Your answers are likely to be:
...I would do/make/be/write/create ____, if I had ____.
...I would go to ____, except that I don't have _____.
...I would be a ____, if I'd ever gotten to ____ like I wanted to, all those years ago before ____.

And you are left hanging with your answers. Conway does inspire you to rekindle your desires, but she doesn't help you deal with the rationalizations standing in your way.

[For that, honestly, I'd suggest Laura Berman Fortgang's "Living Your Best Life."]

Conway often alludes to what occurs in her seminars. So the reader (or at least this reader) is left to wonder whether the seminars have the same content as the book, or whether they have more meat to them--and if so, why isn't that in this book?

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational!.......2004-12-12

This book gives hope and inspiration to many who wish to change or break through a fear. I enjoyed every story and could in some way relate to them all. Ms. Conway has a refreshing and witty way of writing and look forward to her next book!! I recommend this as a gift to someone that needs a little boost.

This is truly a No Fear way to understand Shakespeare. There is a modern day interpretation writing on one side of the book and the Shakespeare way on the other. It was a lifesaver!

5 out of 5 stars Golden Gate to Shakespeare.......2006-01-25

Bravo to the writers, editors, and publishers of the entire No Fear Shakespeare series. Rendering Shakespeare into prosaic, colloquial American English not only explains what Shakespeare was saying, but reveals how much better he said it! Here's a few examples from HAMLET:

Hamlet sees the Ghost, but his mother doesn't. In modern lingo, she says, "This is only a figment of your imagination." That's a cliche. In the original, she says, "This is the very coinage of your brain." That's vivid.

Rosencrantz tells Hamlet in modern lingo, "You're not doing yourself any good by refusing to tell your friends what's bothering you." Sounds like a reprimand. The original line sounds like a threat: "You do surely bar the door upon your own liberty if you deny your griefs to your friend."

Hamlet remembers his mother's relationship with his father: "She would hang on to him, and the more she was with him the more she wanted to be with him; she couldn't get enough of him." Sounds good, but the original sounds disturbing: "Why, she would hang on him / As if increase of appetitite had grown / By what it fed on . . ." Change the word "she" to "it" and you have the image of a parasite. That alone says a lot about Hamlet's view of women and sex.

I know of no better guide to reading, understanding, and appreciating Shakespeare than Spark Notes' No Fear Shakespeare series.

5 out of 5 stars Getting Into Shakespeare.......2005-10-29

Man, I wish I would've had this book 25 years ago!

I've always been interested in Shakespeare but it's been hard introducing anyone else I know to the greatness of his plays: the language is just too hard for most people to follow.

Thankfully, the No Fear Shakespeare books have come along, and I've been buying them for myself as well as others. It's wonderful to have a side-by-side comparison of the Bard's original lines with a modern translation that makes the play easy to read.

I hope the publishers do this with all of Shakespeare's plays!
