Book Description

This wickedly clever parody follows our war-monkey-president as he blithely capers into the most hilarious series of pratfalls and misadventures since Vietnam. The illustrations and text evoke the original stories of a monkey in trouble, but with a twist that turns this terrific little book into a political parable for our times.

4 out of 5 stars Clueless George; A Great Satire!.......2007-04-02

Clueless George is a wonderful satire on several levels. Of course, it satirizes the Curious George books, as well as George Bush, Dick Cheney and others. It does this with a well written little story and wonderful drawings. George (as a monkey) dressed up on the carrier deck for "Mission Accomplished" was almost worth the price of the book alone.

The first book of the series, "Clueless George Goes to War" is a humorous look at how the war in Iraq is being prosecuted and how we wound up there in the first place. The drawings are detailed and need to be viewed several times before their full impact will hit.

This is the smallest and quickest of the books. Although I think was great, don't read this if you are a Bush fan. If, however, you are a reasonable human with a funny bone, then these little books are a must. They are a little expensive for what you get, so I would recommend either getting it either used, from a library (as if that is likely) or by buying the three book set on sale here on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2006-12-02

Superb. It offers the Occam's Razor* for the Iraq invasion & debacle. I totally believe that it accurately portrays of the manipulation of W (the fool of the Bush clan). One hopes the book will be irrelevant soon, alas, but not soon enough. Where's that old Indian curse when we need it?

An extremely funny book. Only extremist radical right-wing nuts who confuse dissent with disloyalty will hate it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Funny.......2006-03-13

This light-hearted book can really tell the truth in a great way. It should be required bedtime reading for people of all ages to keep reminding us how gullible and easily manipulated people can be.

    Book Description

Early in 2004, a National Guardsman from Connecticut arrived in Iraq for a year's posting. Sergeant First Class Jon Trouern-Trend had been a birder since age 12. So naturally he looked for birds--and found them in surprising number and variety around Anaconda Base in the Sunni Triangle, where he was stationed: old-world warblers near the laundry pond, kestrels at the dump, wood pigeons by the airstrip, owls on the cement bunkers. And whenever he got "outside the wire"--collecting water samples from the Tigris, delivering supplies to schoolchildren, at a forward operating base in Mosul, or on a trek to the ruins of ancient Babylon--his lifelist grew longer.
From nearly day one until he left Iraq, Trouern-Trend wrote about his sightings in an on-line journal, which attracted thousands of readers and was excerpted in the press. Now some of the highlights of his "Birding Babylon" blog are collected in this small, beautiful volume, designed to resemble a birder's journal. In a Preface, the author looks back on his experience--and ahead to what the future might hold for the rooks, doves, storks, bulbuls, and sparrows of Iraq, and for its people.
This little book cuts through the politics of war like birdsong, reminding us of our imperishable connection with nature; of how birds and their journeys tie the world together; of the persistence of life even in a wasted land. It's a small act of grace.

4 out of 5 stars Birding in war zone.......2007-07-16

This started out as a soldiers blog, and has more of a travelogue feel, rather than a war correspondent feel of it. The author is most interesting when presenting his walks around the camp, and finding birds in back of the laundry camp and travels. And exotic birds they are: such as Squacco heron, Greater spotted eagle, Egyptian Vulture, purple swamphen, whiskered tern, and blue-checked bee-eater. What is missing however any introspection about the war, Sadam's effect on the environment, or contrast of being in a war zone and observing nature.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed hearing about his birding experiences in Iraq.......2007-05-01

Being a bird enthusiast, AND having a son in the US Army inspired me to buy (and read) this book. I had originally bought it to give to my son (who enjoyed watching birds...mostly raptors....as a child), I decided to read it myself and was amazed at the species of birds this soldier was seeing over there. Sounds like (in addition to his mission) he did have some downtime and had some positive things to say about the region, which was nice. It has to be hard to be away from your family and friends for so long....and Jonathan found a way to stay busy and keep upbeat. Kudos to him, and God Bless our military!

5 out of 5 stars Birding Babylon-Simple Beauty in Wartime.......2006-08-18

This is a small, beautiful book. The natural phenonomena and bird-life that Jonathan Trouern-Trend desribes with such simple elegance in Birding Babylon is both comforting and poignent as it all takes place in Iraq near the beginning of our most recent conflict there.

I salute Mr. Trouern-Trend, both as a fellow "birder" as well as a poet. His writing is spare and unembelished, yet the warm sentiment he awakens in the naturalist' heart is undeniable. Here, again, poignance was the feeling he inspired, as well as admiration for a job well-done.

I love this little book. I bought 3 more copies as soon as I read it to give to friends.

Thank you, Sergeant Trouern-Trend. I salute you! Beth Hall, San Diego, CA

    5 out of 5 stars A nice perspective on a terrible war.......2006-06-12

Because I am a birder, a friend bought me this book. It is perfectly aimed, not a pure birding, and no ranting about the war. Shows the power of nature and appreciation of nature to put a lovely perspective on even the most ugliest of wars. I wanted to know what the birds he referred to looked like so am ordering the birds of the middle east. one might wish photos or more realistic drawing of the birds, but I think that would detract from the journal-like nature of this cute little book.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2006-05-05

This book is great! Part birding journal, part soldier's diary, and fully a reminder that Iraq isn't just a place on a map or in the newspaper. It's a quick read and you really get the feeling that you are just reading the author's notebook that he had in his back pocket while on patrol--really interesting. There's also a list of the 122 species that he saw while in Iraq, which was very enlightening--it's not just a desolate war-torn area over there--there are real signs of life! And the book itself is a really pretty hardcover book; there are even illustrations of all the different birds he saw.

    Book Description

As NPR's senior foreign correspondent, Anne Garrels has covered conflicts in Chechnya, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. She is renowned for the direct, down-to-earth reportage and her independent-minded insight into what she observes. One of only sixteen un-imbedded American journalists who stayed in the now-legendary Palestine Hotel in Baghdad throughout the American invasion, Garrels was uniquely placed to describe our latest war. At the heart of Garrels' narrative is her evolving relationship with her Iraqi driver, Tahir, who becomes her friend and confidant, often serving as her eyes and ears among thepopulace and taking her where no other reporter was able to penetrate; Tahir's own opinions and poignant personal story provide a trenchant counterpoint to the headline news. The diary is also punctuated by e-mail bulletins sent by Garrels' husband, Vint Lawrence, to friends around the world, providing a private view of the rough-and-tumble, often dangerous life of a foreign correspondent, along with much-needed comic relief. The result is an enthralling, deeply personal, utterly authentic picture of this war that no one else could have written. As Chicago Sun Times critic Lloyd Sachs wrote about Garrels' work from Baghdad, "a few choice words, honestly delivered, are worth more than a thousand pictures, in your mind's eye, they carry lasting truth."

5 out of 5 stars The only way this book could be enhanced..........2006-02-23

The only way this book could be enhanced is to have a CD of her broadcasts for NPR. Unfortunately I live in a part of the country where NPR broadcasts are hard to get and it could have made it even better. Unfortunately because I didn't get to hear the broadcasts I could only guess at their content from what the book mentioned. She writes well and seems to find the "hidden stories". Her husband's e-mails are a great voice from the other side of the correspondents life. Itr only adds to the pleasure that he is also a great writer. He had me laughing at some points I certainly hadn't expected to laugh. Overall though the book is great and highly recommended, however I'm sure it's even better if you've heard her NPR reports.

    5 out of 5 stars True Journalisam.......2006-01-24

Enough good words have been said about the book. But ultimately, this book is not about the war. That's why readers who expected to get detailed war stories will be disappointed.

It's about true journalism. Annie showed us the grace under fire, the courage to pursuit the truth, the genuine care for the people she reported on, and above all, the dedication to give a voice to the people who couldn't speak for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing chance to learn the story behind that voice on the radio.......2005-08-30

As a listener to NPR, I feel so much closer to Garrels after learning the backstory behind her reports from the trenches of Iraq. She has extreme skill and intuition at conducting herself in a foreign country, at making people willing to talk, at befriending the right people.

I learned a lot about how much the Iraqi government practiced supression in the old regime. People were terrified for their lives if they talked to foreign reporters, and Garrels had to pay many bribes to get press credentials. When leaving Iraq, corrupt officials invent tests and fees for Garrels and her assistant to pay. Her stories humanized the Iraqi conflict for me--I met both crooks and good guys through Garrels.

Garrels has a great storytelling style. She'll tell an anecdote and then end with a biting one line zinger. She's as taltened on paper as she is on the air, and I'll be watching for more from this amazing woman.

    4 out of 5 stars Another view!.......2005-06-21

Learning Iraq from her is totally different than Television. This is another perspective to war. It is possible to find Iraqi individuals feelings about all situation. Book gives you Iraq before the war, during the war, and after the war. This historical event is explained very well. Book name comes from her naked reporting. Because, she was hiding her satellite phone from Iraqi officers. During the broadcast she reports naked and if officer comes she will say them she is naked and gets extra time for hiding the phone before open the door. Also she slips away from AIDS test due to her age.

This is another must read book for Iraq war.

5 out of 5 stars Annie lays her soul bare in Baghdad.......2005-05-30

I used to hear NPR's anchors say "Thanks, Annie," as they said goodby to each other at the end of even the shortest of broadcasts from Baghdad. After reading this book, I know why. Even the use of her nickname on the air was a way of telling her they cared about her safety, and to take care of herself. And, with the help of Amer, she did, the best she could. This book didn't give sweeping overviews of how the buildup to the war, and then the war itself, went. The Iraqi government was managing the reporters too much for that. But she got away from her minder as much as she could and learned as much as she could, and let the American people know as much as she could. Here, in this book, is the back story of what could not safely be said on the air. It is full of telling details of people she met, their hopes and fears, the things they said and did not say, especially how those changed depending on whether a government official was within hearing distance. She also tells what it was like to be one of only a few reporters left, with few supplies, no electricity, and constant harrassment and demands for bribes. I knew she was a great reporter, and had reported on other wars. This book made me see exactly why she is a great reporter. She is tenacious and courageous and knows what stories to go after. She is willing to use the fact that she is a woman, both with women and men, and the fact that she is no longer young, to get interviews with all kinds of people. She trusts her gut. And when it's time to get out, she gets out. This book taught me more about the war in Iraq than anything else I've read. I just recommended it to a friend who has two sons serving there. I recommend it to others who want to see, not the broad military sweep, but what the buildup and beginning of the war were like for the people.

    Book Description

How is it that the majority of Americans believed the fabrications of the Bush administration in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq when people in other countries, even those who enlisted in “the coalition of the willing,” didn't buy them? Something has happened here and nowhere else, argues provocateur and gadfly Nicholas von Hoffman. It is something that impels vast numbers of Americans to believe the unbelievable when served up by its war-loving government. Best-selling author von Hoffman reveals how the American people have been gulled into cheering for a gigantic hoax by the Bush administration. “It happened because America has manufactured its own reality. A dome has slipped over the country, turning the nation into a unique biosphere which causes Americans to see, hear, and interpret every event and each happenstance as no other people do. Poisoned by recycled, unrefreshed air, Americans think differently.” Hoax is both an impassioned exploration of American propaganda and public opinion, and an urgent dissection of our culture and way of life.

3 out of 5 stars Question: What do all great societies have in common?.......2006-03-30

The answer: a population of arrogant leaders willing to manipulate and ignorant masses willing to work hard for their nation's greater glory. This is the essential point of this book as applied to the USA. N. V. Hoffman has a son serving in Iraq, and this might have something to do with his authorship of this book. Regardless of the author's reasons for writing this work; it is still worth reading. The book describes the mentality of Americans, and how it compares with the mentality of others, and shows how history, geography, and just plain luck, can explain the differences between them. The comparison points to Americans as too confident, too ignorant, and too arrogant for the good of ourselves, and the rest of the world. Specifically it makes us susceptible to lies generated by those in charge; those occupying the White House and their favorite friends and lobbies. The author uses the leadup to the Iraq invasion of 2003 to illustrate his point.

The book is a quick read; though quite opinionated in many respects. I agree with many of the author's conclusions and arguments, I just believe the tone could have been more objective.

5 out of 5 stars American Impression "We are Right" - White Lies!.......2004-12-02

Satirical and barbed, a distinguished read by the New York Observer columnist and author of several books. Hoax stands out to be a controversial pick as the Author hits on the Bush Administration for its diversionary tactics for invading Iraq.

He begins his book with a quote from former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser: "The genius of you Americans is that you never make clear-cut stupid moves, only complicated stupid moves." The Author's son is currently in Iraq in the United States Army to whom the book is dedicated. Due to his temper tantrums, the author was fired many times by editors and TV Executives and he even lost the Pulitzer prize. Hoax is the hot stepper in the best selling list of post Iraq War Books. Von Hoffman criticizes the Bush Administration and this may hurt the blind patriotic faith of Americans who believes that its government does little wrong than many others. In the beginning chapter `The Big Lie' Von Hoffman speaks of the super rich and power image of America and reveals how the American people have been gulled into cheering for a gigantic hoax by the Bush administration. "It happened because America has manufactured its own reality. A dome has slipped over the country, turning the nation into a unique biosphere, which causes Americans to see, hear, and interpret every event and each happenstance as no other people do. Poisoned by recycled, un-refreshed air, Americans think differently." The Bush Administration invaded Iraq with the terrorism threat hanging on as the world watched over with make belief feel that Saddam is the present `Hitler' and Osama Bin Laden lured in the oblivion. Von Hoffman confirms Saddam as the butcher of Baghdad and was a ruthless dictator responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iranians, during the Iran-Iraq war, Kurds, and the random butchering of Iraqis whom he suspected as enemies of the Baath regime. Von Hoffman says that America's mission to curb the Islamic world and bring terrorism to its knees has proven unsuccessful inspite of its so-called victories over Afghanistan and Iraq. The US Government reputation shatters in the eyes of International community and even Tony Blair, the British PM's political future hangs in the balance. Von Hoffman says, "US coalition is busy converting Iraq into a "free world, "Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda still remain at large" and this is so very true and raise questions to Bush Administration. American vision gets blurred as citizens get trapped into white lies and belief `We are right, you are wrong'. A saying goes `you can fool some people some time but you can't fool all people all the time' and perfectly this applies to Bush Administration and the US. Blunt, bold and outspoken, Von Hoffman the Author/journalist is well informed and has presented a Book that sure is a great Pick and if you have been reading M.J.Akbar's Bylines, you will definitely find similar thoughts to many topics covered up in the Hoax.

    5 out of 5 stars Great stuff!.......2004-07-30

No punches pulled in this excellent little book of essays that deals with who we are as Americans, and how we got that way. Loaded with sardonic wit and acerbic criticism, this book is less concerned with the hoax aspect of life of America than it is about the closed-off nature of the bubble that we are seemingly content to live in. According to von Hoffman, we live in a biosphere against which reason and objectivity tend to bounce off. Although the book is quite naturally critical of the current Bush administration, this particilar president is almost incidental to the overall theme. The chapters on how Americans view Arabs and Muslims are among the most interesting in the book. Reminiscent of Gore Vidal's most recent work concerning the current political climate, von Hoffman's book is an excellent read that is both informative and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Tells it Like it is.......2004-07-04

This is one person's look at life in present-day America. The author feels that America is inside a 3000-mile wide terrarium, cut off from the rest of the world. This would explain that by the time of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, the difference in world view between America and the rest of the world grew to the size of the hole in the ozone layer over the South Pole.

During the Nazi era, the Big Lie was simple and repeated over and over again until it became the equivalent of inescapable sound. For whatever reason, George Bush was not a good liar. He and his advisers made the mistake of elaborating, retracting and adding on to the reasons for attacking Iraq. The rest of the world must have been laughing when the Bush Administration came up with one more reason for invasion. The American people believed them, as they generally do when their government and television tell them something. Another rule to keeping things simple is to not offer any evidence, so there can be no refutation. The supposed warehouses full of evidence turned out to be nothing.

Ever since the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, America has believed that it is a "city on a hill," a feeling of "we are right and you are wrong." Since Providence has chosen America to work through human history, anyone already occupying the continent could justifiably be removed or killed.

The first lines of the National Anthem contain the roots of flagolatry, or excessive reverence for the national symbol. Democracies are always right, America is a democracy, so America is always right. Since America is the best democracy, it is more right than the others. Inside the terrarium called America, Arabs don't exist and nobody has heard of them. Arabs are considered non-people with a non-claim to nothing. Americans go on and on about being the greatest country in the world with an almost neurotic need for praise from outside the biosphere. Americans also have rabbit ears for criticism from outside, but the voice of reason just bounces off the glass.

This is a Wow of a book. I'm not sure if I have ever read a book quite like this. It's rare when an American can look at this country the way foreigners (probably) do. It is very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2004-06-11

I was looking for something interesting to read this summer and saw this one in the current affairs section of my bookstore. I picked it up and have been enjoying it tremendously. Von Hoffman is so funny and so correct in his analysis of the present sickness which inflicts American society. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for truth, justice and the (real promise of the) American way.

When I marketed work for Writers' Showplace I always used Jeff Herman's book as a reference. Now that Writers' Showplace has closed its door I've opened another business, The Writer's Guide.Com and I still have Mr. Herman's book close at hand.

3 out of 5 stars On the other hand.......2002-12-30

This is a huge and expensive book. It's also, for my purposes, terribly out of date. Several of the agents I've contacted have moved or are longer in the business. It has some very good features such as the advice section but I could've gotten the same advice for free from the internet. As other reviewers have noted there is an easier and cheaper way to get writing information. Pick up a book that is similar to the stuff that you write. Go to the dedication or thanks page and read it. Many authors thanks their agents and editors. Write down those names and track them down. It takes more time but it's easier on your pocketbook and will probably be more accurate.

Next year I will by the Writer's Market book instead.

It's great for the writers that have collided with the established high standards of the world of publishing, even being them good writers. Read this book and push your talent and you will be published. Many times, depend of what kind of material you wirte. So you need to know what the publisher or the agent are looking for or need. And Jeff Herman (a great agent) guide you for the publishing labyrinth. He tell you how to catch the free time of the editors...and who to contact in that industry. Get the book!

5 out of 5 stars A valuable history reference for schools and homes........1998-08-24

This encyclopedia fills an important gap in the libraries of many schools- it chronicles the participation of the US in all the major wars, from the American Revolution to the Gulf War. Very different from the overly gung-ho, dusty tomes which turn many students off history altogether, this book uses photographs and contemporary illustrations to great effect, and provides a very balanced view of the role of the US- this book is not afraid to discuss how the Native Americans were cheated out of their lands, media censorship in wartime, anti-Vietnam protests, and other issues that show the other side of wartime. While doing that, it also provides an account of the military strategies and campaigns, using maps to great effect. The book also provides short looks at important military figures, and ordinary soldiers, and explains each campaign in a fresh way that is guaranteed to hook student readers. I believe this book would also be ideal for any adult interested in the history of the US. Authors Tom Jones and June English have previously written a book together, 'Mission: Earth', about Tom Jones's experiences as a US astronaut- also highly recommended. I hope that this duo will continue to write books so useful for modern schools.

5 out of 5 stars For Coin information -- THIS IS THE BEST.......2002-07-17

I've been a coin collector since I was 6 years old (1961). I'm not hard core like my brother, so I don't buy a Red Book every year, but I have a couple of them lying around the house. I still refer to them for mintage numbers and other technical info from time to time.

I've seen other coin guides and price lists, etc. and they all pale in comparison to the "Red Book".

4 out of 5 stars Comparative review of 2002 edition vs. 2001 edition.......2001-09-17

The 2002 edition of the red book is so similar to the 2001 edition, even Amazon's computer seems too pool the reviews together. The casual collector probably should not invest in the 2002 edition if they have the 2001 or even 2000 edition. Regular collectors will want it simply for the updated mintage figures or price guides. I would encourage any new collector to pick up a copy, because it is an excellent reference to have handy.
The book continues the annual trend of replacing black and white photos with color (particularly in the gold coin section), to generally positive ends. Oddly, the 1797 plain edge half cent photo has vanished. A glaring omission is the absence photos of the 2000 state quarters, particularly given the fact that there are two blank pages set aside for future state quarters listings, and all the 2000 mintage figures are included. Since that the primary value of the redbook is as a reference, Bressett has overlooked an important addition that should have appeared. On a positive note, a very helpful open wreath image has been added for the 1849 gold dollar.
Some minor modifications and additions exist in the commemorative section, and a great photograph of some gold from the S.S. Central America has been added, which is very appropriate given the magnitude of the find.
The redbook continues its trend as a very handy reference, but it is difficult to justify the exclusion of five new coin designs, costing the 2002 edition a star.
