Book Description
The new paradigm for investing and building wealth in the twenty-first century. The Future for Investors reveals new strategies that take advantage of the dramatic changes and opportunities that will appear in world markets.
Jeremy Siegel, one of the world’s top investing experts, has taken a long, hard, and in-depth look at the market and the stocks that investors should acquire to build long-term wealth. His surprising finding is that the new technologies, expanding industries, and fast-growing countries that stockholders relentlessly seek in the market often lead to poor returns. In fact, growth itself can be an investment trap, luring investors into overpriced stocks and overly competitive industries.
The Future for Investors shatters conventional wisdom and provides a framework for picking stocks that will be long-term winners. While technological innovation spurs economic growth, it has not been kind to investors. Instead, companies that have marketed tried-and-true products for decades in slow-growth or even declining industries have superior returns to firms that develop “the bold and the new.” Industry sectors many regard as dinosaurs—railroads and oil companies, for example—have actually beat the market.
Professor Siegel presents these strategies within the context of the coming shift in global economic power and the demographic age wave that will sweep the United States, Europe, and Japan. Contrary to the popular belief that these economic and demographic trends doom investors to poor returns, Professor Siegel explains the True New Economy and how to take advantage of the coming surge in invention, discovery, and economic growth.
The faster the world changes, the more important it is for investors to heed the lessons of the past and find the tried-and-true companies that can help you beat the market and prosper in the years ahead.

Very Good.......2007-10-21
This is a very good book. Highly recommended and well worth the time. It is normally tough to decide among the many competing books which one to read. As usually time available is the limiting factor. The author explains some very importants concepts to value investing with simplicity. At times it appears that the Author may be going too far to prove how he sounded the warning bells before the 2000 market crash, but overall I really enjoyed reading the book and had many take aways.
dividends resurface.......2007-01-27
The professor touts stocks and funds that feature dividends.Up until 1958 dividend income on stocks exceeded the interest income on long term bonds. For this reason it is difficult to assume that the good professors recommendation to go for dividend income is a prudent strategy when his data is biased by a condition that does not exist in today's market. I would prefer to use index funds that provide excellent diversification and insure that you are being compensated for the risks taken. To explore this strategy I can recommend a book titled How to Make Money in the Stock Market Buy 2500 different stocks Pay no commission. It takes off where this book ends.
Investing does not take a lot of work, in fact, the more you read of the wrong material of which there is an abundant supply, the more you will trade, and the less you will make in the market.
Active buying and selling of stocks by individuals will only run up brokerage commissions and waste your time and money. Turning your money over to a professionally managed mutual fund is even worse because of the fees you are required to pay well compensated `experts' to waste their time. This book shows you how to invest using index mutual funds and exchange-traded funds.
This book can be read and understood in 45 minutes to an hour.
The author follows the strategy promoted here. His portfolio contains over 8,200 different stocks and bonds all through index mutual funds and exchange traded funds. How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 Different Stocks-Pay no Commission
Classic Siegel.......2007-01-17
For those who have read "Stocks for the Long Run", this is right up that same alley in terms of style and no-frills content, after all, it is written by a researcher. However, this is a great book with lots of wisdom to digest. Siegel discusses the "growth trap", a very counterintuitive point that everyone should be aware of....it alone makes the book worth reading. If you are a serious investor/advisor it is a must read. I would caution those who would take this book and start trying to manage a portfolio of all high dividend paying stocks...Siegel's conclusions are insightful, but the right application of them is still critical. See other reviews.
Fantastic.......2007-01-09
One of the most important books on investing that I have ever read. Based in fact, backed up with decades of research, this is a must read.
Good Book, Has Some Holes.......2006-09-19
The Future for Investors has some really great points - the main one being that the compounding power of reinvested dividends should be a significant consideration in stock selection. I agree with this approach, and Siegel makes some persuasive arguments that it provides higher returns and less volitility than other approaches.
However, I agree with some of the criticisms of the book as well:
1) Siegel does not address the tax impact on dividends. His research uses 1957 as a starting point. While our current dividend tax rate is 15% at the federal level, during most of the period from 1957 the rate was higher (sometimes the same as the income rate). During these times, the reinvested amount of the dividend would have only been about 60-70% of the total. Thus, returns would have been lower. (Some people have said that this would only make a marginal difference - maybe so, but it might have changed his argument in comparing Standard Oil to IBM as well as the small advantages he pointed out in some of his stock recomendations. A 1% per annum difference over a multi-decade period amounts to serious money).
2) Siegel cites Altria as the best performing stock during this period. I won't disagree with the conclusion, but I will point out that going for high dividends and reinvesting them works well only when the company survives. What if Beth Steel had been your choice rather than Altria? You would have received lots of dividends and reinvested them, but the ultimate outcome would have been a disaster. The point is that reinvesting dividends works especially well when the reinvestment happens during a difficult time for the stock AND (most importantly) the stock MUST recover from those difficult times. This is not generally the case, but it was with Altria.
3) Siegel's idea that the developed world will sell assets (stocks, bonds, etc) to the developing world to fund the huge retirement wave is full of problems. While the strategy will work to maintain the standard of living of the baby boomers, it will also permanently ruin the future for all subsequent generations of Americans. If you sell the assets (companies) that create your wealth in order to live a comfortable retirement (read consumption), you are giving away your ability to earn in the future. This is something Warren Buffett has been warning us about for a few years now. You cannot indefinitely fund consumption with income producing assets. When you decrease your income producing assets by selling for consumption, you increase your current standard of living at the expense of your future standard of living.
Criticisms aside, this is still a thought provoking book that is well written. Ironically, even though I think there are some questions about many parts of the book, I generally agree with the ultimate types of investments that Siegel recommends - just for different reasons.

Readers seeking an atypical business book may like Leadership Can Be Taught. Its author, Sharon Daloz Parks, has a conventional enough background: She's taught at various Harvard graduate schools, including its Divinity School, the Business School, and the School of Government--the book itself comes from Harvard Business School Press--and she now heads a leadership institute in Washington state, just outside Seattle. Parks' approach to leadership development, though, springs from a decidedly non-traditional philosophy.
Unlike others who lionize strong leaders and decisive, authoritative personalities, Parks looks for her leadership lessons to Ronald Heifetz, a humble, almost meek instructor at Harvard. The book opens with a transcript of Heifetz's typical class at Harvard, and illustrates his free-flowing banter with students. There's something of a biblical, storybook-like quality to this narrative, as it shows Heifetz's Socratic style in drawing out students and leading them to truths. Heifetz's approach carries over to the book, which has an indirect, oblique style, and shuns the reductionist, simplifying, bullet-point orientation of most business books.
Through the course of the book's nearly 300 pages, Parks argues that leadership is less magical and yet more important than we usually believe. Drawing on Heifetz's ideas, she explains her belief that leaders are formed gradually, over time and through deliberate effort--not born with special traits. Four key themes run through the book: first, that true leadership differs from the kind of formal authority typically conferred by organizations; second, that leaders have less of a role solving technical problems than in helping teams of individuals deal with adaptive challenges; third, that conventional power--meaning authority over people and budget--is less important than "presence"; and fourth, that this mysterious quality of "presence" rests less on innate personality than on a style of interacting with others in an organization.
Parks' concept of presence becomes a key axis on which the book turns. It's an intriguing concept. As she defines it, presence is "the ability to hold steady and to improvise in the midst of the conflict and tumult of adaptive work depends on cultivating an inner consciousness of the connectivity of which one is a part--especially when there is a high degree of voltage on the wires. It requires the ability to recognize and intelligently manage strong feelings--one's own emotions and the motions in others
.It requires an understanding of one's self in relationship to audience, the ability to pay close attention, to listen, to feel, and to bring one's own heart-mind into the present
."
Not all of this book rests on such dense academic language. Much of the writing describes anecdotes of students' interactions with Heifetz, as they learn his (and Parks') concept of leadership. Still, this is a challenging work, and not one that all readers will enjoy. Those who enjoy new paradigms of leadership, such as those advanced in Resonant Leadership or The Leadership Wheel, will be best suited for the unusual ideas, and style, of this book. --Peter Han
Book Description
Allows readers to experience the dynamic “case-in-point” approach to teaching leadership, based on Harvard professor Ronald Heifetz’s internationally renowned leadership course This book argues that today’s complex times require a new kind of leader—one who can adapt to constant changes, learn in the moment and apply that learning to make wise business decisions. But to train this type of leader, we need a new approach to leadership teaching. Leadership Can Be Taught dynamically outlines Ronald Heifetz’s renowned “case-in-point” approach, which enables managers to learn crucial business skills from immediate experience rather than through third-hand readings.

Leadership For The New Commons.......2007-07-26
I love some of Sharon Daloz Parks' thinking. I really think she is helping define a new way of looking at leadership in a world of flatter hierarchies and lack of deference to authority, where people expect to 'lead their own lives' increasingly, rather than take their lead from outside.
I love a phrase she coined a while back - 'Leadership for the New Commons' - building on Laurence Lessig's work on defining the new open world of free intellectual exchange and lack of hierarchy that characterises how people interact through the web in particular, but increasingly in real life, too.
The shape of things is changing so fast, I think she has argued, that people need to take responsibility for working it out themselves and reaching common agreements on the way forward - learning how to lead the definition and the way forward - rather than waiting for a leader to emerge and define the way forward for them.
In an increasingly complex and chaotic world, she seems to argue, we all need that internal compass and our own rudder controls firmly switched to 'on' at all times to navigate the complexity.
Harvard's case study methods have been criticized for being too slow. By the time they've taken a year to put together their case study of Google and prepare it as a teaching case, I heard one critical academic say recently, Google has bought YouTube and it's whole business model has moved on.
I tend to agree. And the alternative case-in-point approach Sharon Daloz Parks describes helps break from the lumbering, slow-moving case studies that other business schools ponderously work their way through.
There is a well-known quote from Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus about how anyone can be taught leadership and I've never quite believed it. I wanted to, but never quite could. With the new work of Sharon Daloz Parks and others in the field today, I am glad to say that I am being swayed to think that maybe it can happen. Phil Dourado. www.TheLeadershipHub.com
Another GREAT TAKE on Heifetz & Adaptive Leadership.......2006-07-06
Ron Heifetz is clearly one of the seminal leadership scholars, practitioners, and teachers in the field today. This superb volume, by Sharon Daloz Parks, takes off from where his two previous books ("Leadership Without Easy Answers" and "Leadership On the Line") leave off. "Leadership Can be Taught" takes its readers through Heifetz's Harvard Business School course "PAL 101--Exercising Leadership: Mobilizing Group Resources."
For those of us who have studied Heifetz's two previous books and taken courses modeled off his HBS course (as I did at Columbia Teachers College almost a decade ago), "LCBT" provides an excellent refresher. My Columbia TC Professor (who must have TA'd for Heifetz when she was teaching at Harvard's Graduate School of Education) ran an outstanding version of his course in her own right.
Using all of Heifetz's key principles and pedagogical techniques (and a very similar curriculum), she put us through our paces in teaching leadership "adaptively." It was a watershed learning experience of invaluable practical value to me. Although my field is leadership development in secondary-school education (for both teachers and students), I borrow heavily from Heifetz's theory and work at the graduate level.
Although I doubt they were intended this way, I see these 3 works as a sort of trilogy on adaptive leadership. Heiftez's "Leadership On the Line" (co-written with Marty Linsky) is probably the most accessible of the three: clearly the place for any reader to start learning about H's powerful approach. "Leadership Without Easy Answers" is the most scholarly and thoroughly developed (with extensive historical examples, etc.).
Daloz Parks's "LCBT" concentrates on Heifetz's leadership course itself. What is the experience of taking it like for his students? How do--or don't--its lessons stick with them as they resume their professional lives?
Daloz Parks's answers to these questions are balanced, fair, accurate, and leavened with plenty of anecdotal evidence. We get glimpses of classroom interactions, and we hear Professor Heifetz speaking quite candidly about the advantages--as well as challenges--of his dynamic educational approach.
Any serious scholar or teacher of leadership MUST peruse this product of the Harvard Business School Press. One of the beauties of Heifetz's approach is that it works in virtually any area: from business, to education, to public service, etc. Its principles apply equally in the commercial and not-for-profit sectors.
In sum, I can't recommend "Leadership Can be Taught" highly enough to leaders and/or faculty in leadership-development programs of all stripes. Sharon Daloz Parks has done us all a great service in recording the impact of Heifetz's work on those fortunate enough to study with the master himself!

Truly a chef-as-star cookbook, Bobby Flay's Bobby Flay's Boy Meets Grill features 26 photos of the man himself (not counting hand shots and various belt buckles). His name, either as Bobby Flay or Bobby Flay's, is repeated over 260 times within 274 pages. No reader will ever doubt just whose cookbook lies open on the kitchen counter with 125 "bold new" recipes.
Though there's the unspoken suggestion that Bobby Flay invented fire, Bobby Flay's Boy Meets Grill actually follows in a long tradition of outdoor cookery books, starting with James Beard's take on the subject, the many contributions of Chris Schlesinger and John Willoughby, who truly opened wide the door to modern grilling, Phillip Stephen Schulz's Cooking with Fire and Smoke, and the remarkable Barbecue! Bible put together by Steven Raichlen that takes grilling global--to name just a few.
But Bobby Flay does have flair and he does have enthusiasm, and both show up on every page. In chapters that cover everything grillable--from burgers (they may be turkey, they may be tuna) to poultry to meat, vegetables, and fruit--Flay pushes hard on combinations of colors and textures, spices and flavors sure to excite the sleepiest palate on the beach. Check out a standard like Butterflied Chicken with Lemon, Garlic, and Basil, or something a little more exotic like Whole Lobster Smothered in Cascabel Chile Butter. What is the thought of Grilled Pork Loin Sandwiches with Spicy Mango Ketchup doing to your taste buds right about now?
The main caveat for these recipes: all are written to serve eight. And be sure to use common sense instead of some of the directions, such as cooking chopped garlic and shallots until soft in "almost smoking" hot oil, for four to five minutes. Hello. Great Cookbook!.......2007-07-08
My husband loves to cook and grill and this is by far one of his favorite and most practical cookbooks.
great recipes and fun to read!.......2006-08-19
This is my son's favorite tv chef; I bought this for him for his birthday, and right away made several recipes, that all worked perfectly (often they do not!) The flavors were interesting and the directions clear and helpful. The desserts are fabulous too, especially the ice cream sundae frozen pie; I've already made it twice. The cookbook is a fun read and the recipes delicious! My family loves grilled food and bobby flay just makes it more interesting with his combination of flavors and unusual food pairings.
Awesome grilling.......2006-08-10
Bobby Flay has great recipes, ideas and techniques for grilling. This book is great and will take a long time to use them all.
Not-easy grilling.......2006-05-21
I am a huge Bobby Flay fan, and this book turns out some great recipes, but they are very time consuming, difficult recipes. If you want to turn out some high-end barbecue dishes, this book is for you. Be prepared to put in some serious prep time though.
Easy to use cookbook.......2006-03-27
This book is great, and easy to use. The recipes are a sure fire hit in any setting. You won't be disapointed

Great Ideas... Bad Proportions.......2007-05-10
I love this book for the meals it has inspired. With a few exceptions, the proportions are pretty strange in this book. Everything must be tasted and tested for consistency, texture, and flavor.
The photos are gorgeous, and with some tweaking all of the recipes I've tried have been absolutely mind-blowing!
Haven't been thrilled with the recipes.......2007-01-14
We have tried many recipes from this book, and haven't been pleased with any of them. They turn out OK, but I expected more complex flavors and better textures from Bobby Flay recipes. I know people who have eaten at his restaurant in New York and were very impressed, so obviously he isn't publishing his best recipes. I wouldn't buy another of his cookbooks.
Bold, Straigthforward Recipes.......2002-09-04
I've been a fan of Bobby Flay's cooking shows on TV for a few years. He makes cooking a way to have fun and socialize while not taking away from the true art of cooking. So, after eyeing this book on the shelves for a few months, my sweet wife ordered it for me online.
This book is a winner! In it you'll find many fresh applications of the wonderful flavors of the southwest. For the most part, the recipes are straightforward and easy to follow. It's amazing how far you can go with just a few basic ingredients (Chile, corn, onion, garlic, etc.) In addition to learning lots of specific recipes, Bobby also gives you a great feeling for how to improvise and come up with your own bold creations. I just cooked my first few recipes from the book (New Mexico BBQ Salmon, chipotle buttered roasted corn), and they came out great!
P.S. As an extra bonus, the book is filled with lots of beautiful color photos of the dishes. It's all very artistic.
Watch his television show instead.......2001-10-21
Catch Bobby's show for a month, visit his web site and print a few recipes and you'll have this book already. No need to purchase, nothing new or exciting in here just a few of his vinagrettes, sauces and spiced up main courses. This book was a waste of my money. I had hoped he'd discuss technique and not just cram the book full of recipes I'd already seen him create on the show.
Excellent!.......2001-06-07
The first cookbook by Chef Bobby Flay. Here is an wonderful book that shows what an excellent Southwestern-style chef he is.
This book contains explanations to some of his ingredients, as well as techniques to use, when using an ingredient, for example, using yellow tomatoes versus red tomatoes. He, also, adds resources where you can find some of his hard-to-find ingredients. This is a definite plus, as a lot of the chiles are hard-to-find in my area, but so worth the effort, because once you assemble the recipe, it is SO delicious! You just can't believe it.
I tried a few of these recipes on my husband, who has a distinct taste that is hard to please, to say the least, and he has loved each recipe I have made from this book. Favorites of ours are the Pan Seared New York Steak with Chipotle Butter, Caesar Salad with Red Chile Croutons and the Peach & Blueberry Cobbler!
In addition to writing cookbooks, Bobby Flay hosts three television shows on the Food Network: "Food Nation with Bobby Flay", "Hot Off the Grill with Bobby Flay" and "Grillin' and Chillin'".
"Food Nation" is a tour of the United States in the least likely spots, where Bobby Flay explores the cuisine of that area. Spots visited have been the Pennsylvania Dutch country, Kentucky, Nashville and Boston.
"Hot Off the Grill" shows Bobby Flay assemble meals with some volunteers that may be like the more average at-home cook, showing me, how easy these dishes really are to prepare.
"Grillin' and Chillin'" has only been on during barbecue season (that I have noticed), but shows Bobby Flay with Jack McDavid, a real southern cook. Together they barbecue huge spreads all on the grill!
Bobby Flay also has his own line of spice and condiments. A wide assortment from dry rubs, drink mixes, infused oils and spice blends. These are available to purchase at his "Mesa Grill" web site: www.mesagrill.com
Also, he owns and works at two restaurants in New York City: "Mesa Grill" (Southwestern cuisine) and "Bolo" (Contemporary Spanish cuisine).
I thoroughly enjoyed this cookbook and would highly recommend it!

I am very pleased with my purchase. The condition of the book was as described and it arrived in a timely manner.
Big Girl Knits.......2007-09-16
This book is just what big Girls who knit need. It's witty, funny and the patterns are lovely and inspiring. Definitely a very well written book.
A bad attempt at a cool idea.......2007-09-10
It is books like this that I really hope inspire others to write better ones - with better patterns, better looking models and a kinder, more creative title.
I have to agree with the other reviewers that the patterns are awful! They have no shape to them, don't lay right and the designs are ugly. After 2 pattern attempts I just gave up. Eventhough I was not to keen on any of the patterns I did want to try one out as a gift.
I find the items suggested in this book to be ones that would be the rejects at stores that majority of larger women would never dare be seen in. Come on! Our clothes have to reflect the abundance of personality and class a beautiful bigger woman usually has!
Would it have hurt to hire models that didn't look so frumpy? What makes an okay looking top become a bad one is if the model looks like she hasn't done her hair or makeup. The models selected for this book provide zero stimulation to the items they are suppose to be inspiring to create. I am not talking about hiring supermodels, but the least thing these models could have done were comb their hair, put some lipstick on and smile and make us think the tops were really fun to wear!
Lastly, I find the book's title unintelligent and frankly offensive. When did a word (big) that we use towards children to encourage them to be mature and respectful become such a negative term towards women's bodies? Society really needs to embrace the words that really describe our bodies... voluptuous, curvy, healthy, etc... Would it have killed the authors to name it "Venus Girl Knits" or "Vivacious Voluptuous Women Knits"?
I really hope this book inspires some more creative bound books in the future. It was a great idea that has so much more potential in the market. I personally do not recommend this one at all.
To all big girl knitters don't miss this one!!.......2007-07-09
This is a wonderful book full of fashionable knits for we big beautiful women. There is an excellent forward with all you need to know about dressing to suit your size and the importance of measuring ourselves correctly.
Although all the patterns are not to my taste, most of them are and I had a hard time deciding what to knit first.
I can't wait for the next one.
Thanks
Abrasive.......2007-06-21
I find this book informative and vulgar. The authors' use of inappropriate inuendoes and offensive language destroyed any desire to support their efforts at having written this book. Sometimes trying to be funny when you are not only makes the attempt worse. As a confident full bodied woman I have no need for such demoralizing humor. The book was returned...and yes I do appreciate the authors' attempts at creating knitting patterns for women of substance.

A new understanding and approach to eating disorders from a renowned expert, coauthor of the classic Dying to Be ThinNearly 5 percent of Americans face an eating disorder -- and eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Long considered an affliction of young women, they are now common among young men, middle-aged women, and even children as young as five. This is a health crisis of epidemic proportions.Regaining Your Self offers hope in the battle against eating disorders through a radical new therapy technique pioneered by Ira M. Sacker, M.D. A leader in the field, Dr. Sacker has been treating patients with eating disorders for thirty-five years. This breakthrough book, filled with firsthand accounts from patients, family members, friends, and others, provides what patients and their families desperately need: a therapeutic model that heals.

Nourishing the self.......2007-07-30
Ira Sacker's approach to treating eating disorders is indeed a bold new one. His refreshing approach known as PIRT (Personal Interactive Rational Therapy) takes the focus away from the food and the eating and shines the spotlight where it is most needed--on the individual's path of self-discovery. PIRT transcends traditional approaches to treating eating disorders as it provides the client the safety, space, and support to discover her own identity, independent of the confines of her eating disorder.
This book presents a comprehensive overview of eating disorders in such a compelling, fascinating, and illuminating way. Ira demystifies the lure of eating disorders by explaining how they can serve as ways (albeit unhealthy ones) to help individuals relieve their anxiety, while also giving them a sense of identity. His therapy focuses on helping the individual redefine themselves in terms of their passions and interests--and not by their body shape and weight.
Regaining Your Self is filled with compassion and understanding for those suffering from eating disorders. Ira stresses that effective treatment is one that respects the individual's difficult journey of giving up the eating disorder identity and replacing it with their newly discovered personal identity. This journey is beautifully summarized in a quote by Anais Nin that appears in the final chapter of the book:
"...and the day came when the risk it took to remain tight inside the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom..."
Finally I Understand.......2007-06-13
I have been a compulsive overeater for twenty-five years. I can't calculate the damage this has done to my life. I have been to four therapists, attended Overeaters Anonymous, and read scores of books on diet, exercise, overeating, and compulsive behavior. All of them have provided clues, but none of them taught me the comprehensive overview of why I behave the way I do and what is needed to recover that this book has done.
It has answered all of my questions, and several more that I didn't know to ask. It showed how a great deal of my strange behavior is not just a quirky personality, but the direct result of my disease. The book has shown me the way to real healing. I am very grateful to the author for making this information available.
Yes, the book focuses on anorexics and bulimics. Yes, sometimes the book seems to be addressing patients and other times therapists. Yes, some of the book does not seem to relate to me. But this is probably necessary given the books objectives and, as I said, it addresses every concern I had and more.
I am now looking for a therapist who is willing to read the book and work through its approach with me. This book is a life changer.
This book is a blessing.......2007-06-08
I highly recommend Dr. Ira Sacker's book to anyone suffering from an eating disorder, as well as to their families, friends, professionals, and anyone else interested in this area. God has used this book to help me understand so much about my own seventeen year struggle with anorexia, which began at the age of thirteen, and it has given me hope on my road to recovery. I have experienced all of the slips, lapses, relapses, and collapses, in which he explains in his writings. I now see a light at the end of this long dark tunnel. Dr. Sacker has been working in the field of eating disorders for more than 35 years; and his knowledge and unique approach known as PIRT-Personal Interactive Rational Therapy-is profound. This book is validating, informative, and deeply insightful. I have finally grasped that overwhelming anxiety along with other issues is at the core of eating disorders, rather than weight and food. Dr. Sacker does not just write about the underlying problems, but provides how one can overcome them by finding their passion in life. I can see Dr. Sacker's heart and soul in every page of this book. I am so grateful to him for his dedication, compassion, sensitivity, and incredible desire to see individuals regain their true selves and to be free from the "hell" that they are in. I am also eternally grateful to God for the contribution that he has made to the eating disorder field. Dr. Ira Sacker is a blessing. Please buy his book and internalize its truths, so that you can become the person you are meant to be. As Dr. Sacker quotes, from an anonymous source, "Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly." Sincerely, Dawn D.
Regaining Your Self.......2007-06-08
This book purports that lack of identity, perfectionism and anxiety are intrinsic in eating disorders. It was helpful to think about the connection of these issues because identifying the problem makes it easier to address. At times I wasn't sure if the author was speaking to clinicians or lay people. His vast experience seems to be with clients who suffer from anorexia or bulimia. He does say that eating disorders are on a continuum which would include compulsive overeaters, but for those who deal with compulsive overeating you may find yourself wanting more examples of overeaters. There's not a lot of practical advice for addressing anxiety, perfectionism and identity issues. I wish the author had gone a little bit further in presenting concrete ways to work with the problem.
Book Description
In 1896, a Norwegian immigrant and mother of eight children named Helga Estby was behind on taxes and the mortgage when she learned that a mysterious sponsor would pay $10,000 to a woman who walked across America.
Hoping to win the wager and save her family’s farm, Helga and her teenaged daughter Clara, armed with little more than a compass, red-pepper spray, a revolver, and Clara’s curling iron, set out on foot from Eastern Washington. Their route would pass through 14 states, but they were not allowed to carry more than five dollars each. As they visited Indian reservations, Western boomtowns, remote ranches and local civic leaders, they confronted snowstorms, hunger, thieves and mountain lions with equal aplomb.
Their treacherous and inspirational journey to New York challenged contemporary notions of femininity and captured the public imagination. But their trip had such devastating consequences that the Estby women's achievement was blanketed in silence until, nearly a century later, Linda Lawrence Hunt encountered their extraordinary story.

Captivating read!.......2007-08-29
For anyone who loves to read and is interested in Women's history, this book is for you! Trust me; you will not be able to put the book down.
I found it in a little used bookshop and was afraid additional copies to share might be scarce. I'm pleased to find it is still available for purchase here on Amazon.

the more humble among us."
Aptly sums up thirty-six year old Norwegian immigrant Helen Estby's 1886 walk with her eighteen year old daughter, Clara, 3500 miles across America. The trek was attempted for financial reasons, its completion with certain stipulations and within a seven-month time span would result in a $10,000 windfall for the cash strapped family. Unfortunately, due to negative feelings about the journey, during which Mrs. Estby left the care of her eight younger children in the hands of her husband, most of the information about it was not only not saved, but was intentionally destroyed by her descendants. Surmounting obstacles like difficult terrain, inclement weather, bad guys and a lack of money (the contract did not allow them to solicit donations) and the judgmental feelings of the many at the time who felt their behavior was in appropriate, the Estbys showed their detractors that they had the right stuff. The problem with the story, frankly, is a lack of firsthand information, which would have made its telling more personal and compelling: an okay story about a fantastic feat. Good companion reads: Tomboy Bride by Harriet Fish Backus, Grand Ambition by Lisa Michaels, In a Far Country by John Taliaferro and Nothing Like It In the World: The Men Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad 1863-1869 by Stephen E. Ambrose.
Fabulous read - and perfect gift for a reader friend.......2007-05-07
I have purchased a dozen copies of Bold Spirit because I enjoyed this true, almost unbelievable, story so much, and have found that all recipients shared my enthusiasm. I'm grateful that someone unearthed Helga Estby's incredible tale - this book gives you quite an insight into a truly remarkable life that her scandalized family tried their best to bury.
We've Come a Long Way.......2007-04-10
BOLD SPIRIT: HELGA ESTBY'S FORGOTTEN WALK ACROSS VICTORIAN AMERICA is an unforgettable story of Helga and Clara Estby's trek from Spokane, Washington to New York. The book is an interesting biographical and historical narrative of the mother and daughter's trip because it is about ordinary people, and how their lives paralleled the historical past in terms of women's history, social and cultural history, and immigration history. Hunt stresses the restrained lives in which Helga and Clara lived, but emphasizes their desire to walk cross-country within the contiguous United States to raise funds to save their farm; a challenging and unusual feat during the late nineteenth century especially for women and the roles they lived.
The major argument about the book is that Hunt lacked enough primary documents in order to provide a complete account of the Estby's journey. However, the crux of the story involves women's suffrage, and the Estby's struggle for acceptance within a patriarchal society that looked down on women's progressive activity, especially Norwegian immigrant women who also experienced severity as well. Hunt successfully weaves a story and history about two women who lived during one of the most tumultuous periods in American history, which is closely connected to the family. With inspiration from a history essay written by eighth-grader Doug Bahr, grandson of Thelma Estby, and the remaining sole document of the Estby's trip, a scrapbook owned by Thelma, Helga's granddaughter, which reveals the remaining account of their trip from two newspaper articles from the Minnesota Times, Hunt was able to tell the Estby's story with the addition of research and a compilation of secondary sources. Despite the limited personal accounts from Helga and Clara, the articles reveal their adventure of scenic views of their trip, which consisted of the fading American frontier of pioneering days of the past and the somewhat fearful encounter of Native Americans amidst a transformed modern America constructed Union Pacific Railroad, and the beckoning cityscapes of Chicago and New York. Ironically, upon the completion of their journey, the women would face further personal hardships in terms of finding a way to return home and discovering the deaths of two family members.
BOLD SPIRIT is an insightful and visual narrative that shows the fabric of America. Linda Lawrence Hunt proves that a story that has been hidden for centuries as a result of familial strife that involved social and cultural norms that was expected during the nineteenth century, finally can be told. Thus Helga and Clara's history is a shared history that is worth reading and understanding.
Half a story.......2007-04-09
The author makes a valiant attempt to create an entire narrative out of a few shreds of fact. I was interested in Helga's story (though long passages of the book are tedious going), but in the end, I was hugely frustrated by the complete lack of information on the daughter who accompanied her step for step.
What, oh what, became of Clara? How can the author present as history an account that focuses on only one of the two persons involved? Did Clara marry? Did she have children and grandchildren? Did she ever speak or write of her epic walk? Was she shunned by the family, as her mother was? We simply don't know, after reading this book, and are left to wonder why there is no further information on Clara.
Ultimately, this book is a failed historical account of an intriguing personal adventure. Another reviewer suggested the story would have made a much better novel than nonfiction; considering the lack of primary information, I have to agree.

Gaining a new perspective.......2007-08-07
Great book , which I purchased after joining my first RR and then starting to hyperventilate. The variety of layouts in this book gave me a huge sense of relief , frankly. The art communicated to me much more strongly than words that I could trust my own instincts as these artists do. There are a lot of different approaches to the same themes in this book and they opened my eyes to new possibilities that I personally might not have seen without them.

Best of Class.......2007-10-07
This gem of a book was published among a flurry of "me too" self-help psychobabble tomes and I think was lost among them. I am amazed every time I pull it out, at how relevant it still is.
I laughed when I saw the earlier review that said "I dare you" regarding this book.
I said the same thing when I gave it to a friend years ago. (I'm married to him now)
A Must-Read.......2007-08-29
Bold Love is probably the most important book I have ever read. It was recommended to me for the practicality of the three last chapters concerning how to relate to evil persons, foolish persons and so-called ordinary sinners. I found these chapters very helpful. What I didn't expect from the book was a new perspective of myself and God. Allender's language is so graphic I wondered how a man could know what I, a woman, was thinking and feeling. Without knowing it, this is the book I was searching for and hoping for but didn't think existed. I will read it over and over.
My Most Influential Book.......2007-06-09
What does it mean to "honor" a wicked parent? How do you love an abusive person without opening yourself up to more damage? What happens when you can't forgive and forget?
With a few exceptions, I generally write reviews of books I like which means I'm somewhat biasing the overall Amazon rankings. But let me say that of all the books I like or love, none has influenced my life more than Dan Allender's Bold Love. I say life because it has impacted so many areas from my relationships to my politics to my theology to my marriage. The book is about what it really means to love someone, anyone from the love of your life to an abuser to your greatest enemy. The crux of the message is that love is not forgive and forget attitude but rather one that admits the pain and hurt that has been caused and confronts it. But the purpose of the confrontation is really the key to the book. The purpose is not to cover your bases or get it off your chest to enable to move on and have closure. What was revolutionary to me at the time of reading was that it pointed me back to the object of love, the other. It solidified the fact that evil committed against you must be admitted and the accuser must be confronted. This is difficult and thus the "Bold" in the title. But the underlying belief is that no person is beyond saving. No person is beyond to hope of reconciliation.
The authors are Christians. Dan Allender is a counselor with many years of experience. Tremper Longman is a top-notch Old Testament Scholar who writes one of the chapters in the book himself and assists in writing the rest. Why bring an Bible scholar into a discussion of interpersonal relationships? Because their model for reconciliation is God's reconciliation with man. The sin that man commits against God did not disqualify us from being loved, it just made the task more bold. First of all, God calls a spade a spade. He does not deny the sin committed or the gravity of the consequences. He does not just forgive and look the other way. Rather, Jesus, or better to use the name Emmanuel in this context, dove right into the mess and sought after those who had abused God through their disobedience. He never gave up. He was tenacious always believing that reconciliation was possible. He interceded for his killers saying, "Father, forgive them."
The argument is that this should be our impetus for boldly going after those who have sexually, physically, verbally, or mentally abused us, whether fathers or mothers or former friends or outright enemies. God did not give up on creation. He sought after it at great expense to himself. This is what it means to love. This is what it means to love your enemies. The importance that the book places on admitting the evil that was done along with the hope that no one is beyond the reach of reconciliation is what has impacted my mind so much in so many different areas.
If you're interested in this topic in general I also recommend the following:
Exclusion and Embrace by Miroslav Volf - Award-winning book I've seen recommend by theologians/biblical scholars. (Author is a Christian theologian)
The End of Memory by Miroslav Volf - The latest offering from Volf and has been receiving rave reviews. (Same as above)
I and Thou by Martin Buber - Becoming somewhat of a modern day classic on the subject and I've also seen this recommended in theological circles. (Author is a Jewish philosopher)
Here is a summary outline of Bold Love which follows a wartime motif:
Section 1: The Battlefield of the Heart
This is the most theologically oriented section as it introduces the problem and describes the motivation to love based on what God has done.
Section 2: Strategy for the War of Love
This section is the meat of the book as it describes the steps toward reconciliation. First there is a passionate hope and hunger for restoration. Second, we mercifully revoke revenge and as we are reminded of our brokenness and how God hoped and hungered for restoration with us. Third, introduces us to the art of confronting the enemy.
Section 3: Combat for the Soul
This section takes the principals in the first two parts of the book and applies them practically to three different types of people who may have caused hurt in our lives. First, there is a chapter on loving an evil person, subtitled Siege Warfare. Specifically this is about sexual, physical, verbal, or mental abusers. Second, there is a chapter on loving a fool, subtitled Guerrilla Warfare. This is about people who carelessly cause great damage to another's soul. Third, there is a chapter on loving a normal sinner, subtitled Athletic Competition. This is the type of hurt you may deal with from most people on a daily basis.
Prophetess Monique Johnson.......2007-05-30
This is a dynamic book that every Christian who serves the Almighty God needs to read in order to grow in God's love one to another. Many of us lack this fruit and really don't know what real love is or what the love of God is. By the time they read this book they will have a deeper more revelatory understanding of God's expectetaion of us. Every leader needs this book now!
Real Love Is Not For Wimps!.......2007-02-24
This is actually going to be my fifth reading of Bold Love. The more I
read it the more I understand why love gets such a bad rap. I have learned that real love, God's love is both sacrifical and exhilirating.
Learning and understanding how God loves frees me to love better and to
recognize when I am not being loved. This is a journey like no other but
worth every step!
