A book with so much Character.......2005-12-05
Mr. Lincoln was the greatest principle ever. He dressed cool and he acted cool. He would do all sorts of things with his students. He seemed to really light up his school. Well not so much to mean gene. Gene is mean and he is not afraid to show it. He doesn't like people that are different from him. He picks on them and even calls them mean names. All the teachers felt as if they have had enough of old gene. Well Mr Lincoln thinks different of this kid. He brings him under his wing and soon Gene is a normal nice kid again. He introduces him to the atruim that needed new birds in it and it opens up a new world for Gene. He just needed to be shown that all people are different but we all share many things also.
WOW!! I have never read a book like this. Race was a big issue to this kid Gene. He went home and his father would tell him mean things about other races and he would come back to school and say them out loud to all his fellow classmates. I was so amazed at the way Mr. Lincoln handeled this situation. He slowly turned Gene onto other things that he liked and got away from the race issue. Gene was not a bad kid he just was copying what his parent told him. All kids do this everyday. I was so shocked to read this book. I have never read a book like this in elementary school. I feel left out in a way. Like my teachers tried to shield me from the bad books and give me only the good ones. I really liked this book a lot. It was GREAT!! It told the truth, made the characters come to life and had it's own twist. This book had great qualities that make up a GREAT book. There are many ways that you could use this book. If you wanted to talk about discrimination you could use this book. You could bring up many topics on discrimination with this book. If you wanted to talk about differences you could use this book also.You could have your whole class draw or paint somebody of a different race that they really admire. You could have you students come up with all the mean words that they have heard from other people and put them on a big piece of paper in front of the room. Then you could tell them that these words will no longer be used in my classroom or by any of my students. This book had it all lessons, great pictures, and a great read. Mrs. Polacco just like Eleanora Tate, and Christopher Paul Curtis, and Mildred Taylor all write books about change and people's differences. This book was great and it will help all students to see race and people in a new light.

My teacher read this book to us in class. It was the usual case of a white person disrespecting people of color and the people of color being peaceful and understanding. I'm so sick of reading books about how mean white people still can receive love and understanding. Why aren't white people nice to blacks if they're mean. It's just one more book telling people of color to continue to let whites walk all over them.

Mr. Lincoln is a nice and playful principal. There is a bully in the school who doesn't like the principal, children and teachers. Eugene is the bully; he likes birds. If you read this book, you won't end up like Eugene. Mr. Lincoln was helpful to Eugene by helping him be nice to other people.

I like Mr.Lincoln`s way because it shows that people can change. Eugene turned from a bully to a bird observer. I learned that with hard work you can turn into a whole different person. I gave this book five stars because it tells what you can

As a reader, this is a good product. While it may perpetuate some popular myths or stereotypes about Lincoln (big hat, black clothes, simple but wise gentle-man) - so what? More truth than fiction. In that, this little reader does the valuable services of endearing another generation to our greatest President.
Fun History Lesson.......2006-03-10
I read this book to my pre-K class, who just loved it. Learning about Lincoln's hat habit along with the other significant things in his life was great. It made the kids listen to the entire book (hard for some 4 and 5 year-olds). I even had one boy show up the next day with notes in his hat!! My 7-year-old son loves the book too.

I find this a very good book to use with my first graders in learning something about Abe Lincoln. The pictures are good and the anctedotes relate to the children.

This is an awesome book and series! (there are 7 total and the 8th is out in July, keep reading!) After going through the Magic Tree House stories and the Time Warp Trio series, this book series was a SPECTACULAR time twist on American's who helped shaped our nation. Each book asks, "What if this person quit? Gave up? Didn't do what the history books said they did?" I was looking for a series to get my kids interested in U.S. History and this series kept catching my attention. I couldn't find them in the local libraries and it is ashame! These books need to be on the shelves for all the kids to read. Tell your school library, tell your local library that you want to read them. I can't say enough good things about the book! And by the way, my opinion of this series was formed long before our school was fortunate to have the author visit and talk to the kids. It was a unique experience that has all the kids excited and wanting to read the books. My twin boys could NOT put the books down and went through them as quick as I could buy them off of Amazon! ENJOY THEM YOURSELF! READ THEM TO YOUR KIDS! GET YOUR KIDS INTERESTED IN U.S. HISTORY AND THIS SERIES! YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!

This book was excellent. I learned a lot about the President. I also liked it because the author was very good at describing what life was like whem President Lincoln was alive.
I recommend this book to people around the ages of 7-10 years old. I have read every book in the series and find they are an excellent and fun way to learn about history. The Blast to the Past books really bring the characters to life. At times I thought I was there. I can't wait for the next book to be written so I can read it at once!

More than a Blast.......2006-01-10
This wonderful series of "Blast to the Past" books enables children to explore history and to develop an appreciation for the importance of personal courage. Elementary school students can easily relate to the main characters (3rd grade children) as they transition from our familiar world to a time of historical importance, with the help of a time traveling machine. Not only do the authors transport the readers back in time, but they take it one step further by entertaining "what if" scenarios. Readers get to imagine what the world would be like without the important contributions of people from the past. And they get to imagine the personal challenges each person faced before accomplishing greatness.
In "Lincoln's Legacy," the children in the story meet up with Abraham Lincoln as he waits for a victory on the battlefield before issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. The book helps us imagine how tense and uncertain those times were for the people who lived then, especially for someone empowered with so much responsibility for his nation. The children in this story have to find a way to convince Lincoln to not give up. My 8-year-old daughter loved this book and she enjoyed the chance to repeat the phrase "Emancipation Proclamation" until she could say it flawlessly.
As a mother, I like how each story emphasizes the point that great things can be accomplished when we each of us can persevere past our doubts and draw upon our courage to follow our convictions and dreams. The Blast to the Past books are fun to read and exciting lessons in history. More than that, the authors have provided a powerful message about optimism and determination, encouraging future greatness in our children.
The Best Book Ever!!.......2005-09-19
I'm ten years old and in my opinion, I think that this book is so much fun to read. It is very educational and exciting. Once I started reading I couldn't stop! It only takes one hour to read it. I love how they put real facts. While your reading it your learning many things. The author has described it with excellent detail. I am sure you will like love this book. Happy Reading!!
A fun time travel adventure for young readers........2005-09-09
This is the first book in the Blast to the Past series, about the adventures of a group of kids who travel through time and meet famous historical figures, while learning how little it takes to change history.
Abigail and her classmates always enjoy Mondays at school, where their teacher asks them "what if" questions about historical events. This particular Monday, their teacher, Mr. Caruthers, arrives late at class, looking disturbed. After lessons, he confronts Abigail and a few of the other students with some shocking and disturbing news - he just came back from a trip to the past, where he learned Abraham Lincoln was ready to give up on freeing the slaves after a series of battles that the Union Army lost. Mr. C was unable to persuade President Lincoln to change his mind, but he hopes the kids may have more luck. So he sends them back in time, where they meet President Lincoln and must try to persuade him that he will be successful and it's still worth fighting for freedom.
I think this book would be a good choice for reluctant young readers -- the characters will appeal to kids, and the book is a fast-paced read that teaches history in a fun way. Kids who already love to read and enjoyed books such as the Magic Tree House series are sure to enjoy it as well.

I really like this story because it has the President Abraham Lincoln in it. The story has a little girl who wants the president to grow a beard so that he would look more handsome and to free the slaves from freedom and they won't have to be sold to people.
A Wonderful Historical Novel.......2000-04-08
This book is a very interesting way to read about U.S. history during the times before the Civil War. It is based on the true story of a young girl who wants to help Lincoln get elected in order to stop slavery. Many important details of the time period help to make the reader understand what life was like then. It also includes photos of the actual letters written between Grace and Mr. Lincoln.
