Book Description
His success as Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe, President of the Reichstag, and Prime Minister of Prussia, secured Goering's future as Hitler's designated successor. This major biography takes you to Hitler's inner circle, and inside one its most powerful, fascinating and complex members.

Informative but somewhat difficult to read........2007-02-07
This is a good book even if it does not resemble a conventional biography. The book has scant information on Goering's private life concentrating itself, rather, on Goering's performance at the helm of the German economy during Nazi rule. The author has a superb grasp of the subject at hand and he does portray and encompassing picture of German economic affairs during World War 2. Mr. Overy is an accomplished writer; his sentences are elegant and clear. Nonetheless, the book is difficult to read because the chapters and, even many paragraphs, are overly extensive causing fatigue to the reader. Overall, it is a good book that taught me a lot about Goering, the Nazis, and the German war effort.
Good thing Goering was on their side........2005-08-09
This was a difficult book to read since it is not really a biography. In fact you would learn little about Goering's early life from reading this book. What this book reviews are the policies Goering pursued at both the Luftwaffe and his Economics Ministry. Goering was no military genius, and he certainly couldn't organize like George Marshall, so he basically was a flop at both these positions. Yet, he garnered them up and retained them throughout much of the war to the detriment of Nazi Germany. It was a good thing he was on their side.
The other thing that is striking about this book is that Goering made possible much of the war and murderous genocide of the regime. Even though he acted as the humane face of the regime, he in fact was one of the chief devil's disciples. He deserved what he got at Nurnenburg. He was as guilty as Hitler for the genocide, slave labor, and brutal warfare.
This is a difficult read, since it covers primarily the policies of Nazi Germany. For policy wonks, this is a great read, for the lay reader, probably not.
More German Economics than Goering Bio.......2004-12-30
While this book may be considered a biography it deals more with German economics and Luftwaffe related events than with the actual life of Hermann Goering.
If you are expecting a bio along the lines of Padfield's exhaustive "Himmler" or Kershaw's masterful "Hitler: Hubris" or "Hitler: Nemesis" forget it, this isn't for you. There are other Goering Bios that do a much better job of fleshing out the life of their subject than this relatively short book.
This book does do a passable job of covering Goering's war years and his influence on ,and failure of, the Third Reich.
Read it together with David Irving's biography.......2004-10-08
This book is very much an analysis of the malignant effects of putting Göring in charge of the Four Year Economic Plan, the wastage and inefficiency resulting from his mis and non management of the economy. To get a better feel of Göring as a person, vile, vainglorious, vulgar, you should also read Irving's book.
Profiling Goering, the Nazi economic czar.......2004-09-07
~Goering~ is an overall objective biography of the so called Iron Man, Hermann Goering. Goering is most famous for his ominous statement: "I have no conscience, Adolf Hitler is my conscience." Pragmatic, arrogant, callous, and always eager to impress his unflinching loyalty to Hitler, Goering secured a considerable power base in Hitler's Reich. Goering was an economic czar of sorts who controlled a portfolio of coveted positions in the Nazi state. He played a pivotal role in the organization of Germany's Wehrwirtschaft (i.e. war economy.) Chief among those roles: was his role as the head of the Reichswerke A.G.-a state holding company-which consisted largely of nationalized industries, properties expropriated from Jews, as well as assets captured in Lorraine, Luxembourg, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Romania, and all the way to the Donetz basin of the Ukraine. This enterprise was to supplant the primacy of the I.G. Farben conglomerate and become the fulcrum of the Nazi war machine providing steel, iron, coal, munitions and oil. Also, it was to facilitate the phased shifting of the Reich industrial base into Eurasia while ratcheting up production for the war effort. These plans never really materialized for various reasons: first, the Nazis quickly alienated the conquered Slavs; second, they recklessly pillaged and plundered-destroying many productive assets in the east, which otherwise could have been attained intact and unscathed because of the speed of the blitzkrieg; and lastly because Goering ineffectually diverted resources and manipulated the economy incessantly. Richard Overy captures some of the more naïve economic views of Goering rooted in his affinity for socialist ideas. Goering avowed, in a Nazi economic system, "Profits cannot be considered... Calculations cannot be made as to cost. " Such naïve economic thinking characterized a man greedily obsessed with bringing the German economy under his control. Likewise, he made sporadic interventions in the economy as if the law of supply and demand could somehow be negated or supplanted with the force of the Nazi will to power. Not surprisingly, the results Goering desired were seldom found. Moreover, shortages were common and production seldom met expectations. As a rule, the ambitious Goering zealously guarded his perceived prerogatives and was apt to look for more private industry to gobble up into his inefficient socialist conglomerate. Moreover, in his role as head of the German Luftwaffe (Air Force), Goering zealously pushed for an inefficient reallocation of material resources to his pet projects while diverting them from private industry and other military branches.
He may have won Hitler's respect initially, because of their shared obsession with wunder-waffens (i.e. wonder weapons.) Despite, the engineering ingenuity and pioneering ambition of Germany in aviation and military technologies, the sporadic and tempestuous state interventions in the economy made any German technological advantage superfluous. Both Hitler and Goering were obsessed with constant perfection of designs as well as getting new ones online. As a result, assembly lines had to be constantly retooled and components redesigned, typically on the orders of Goering. For all these reasons, the idea of mass production became rather comical with the incessant changes ordered by Goering. Throughout the war, Nazi Germany-obsessed with perfecting tank and aircraft designs-made piecemeal gains in productivity while the Western Allies were busy churning out far more armaments and equipment. The full potency of Allied arms and munitions was cognizable in the sheer quantity they produced. These were volleyed at the crumbling Reich with full force.
The Ruhr capitalists expressed frustrations at the sporadic interventions of the state. Though, the radicalism of Goering was somewhat tempered by others in power since he would have preferred more nationalization and state control over the economy. As a practical matter, at the behest of Speer and Hitler, the power base of Goering was finally curtailed after 1943 as concessions were made to industry and 'party moderates' in vain hopes of turning things around for the German war economy. In the end, it seems that Goering's bungling, anti-capitalist tendencies, and unintentional economic sabotage coupled with the Allied bombing campaign fortunately kept the German war machine from ever reaching its full productive potential. Richard Overy captures this reality quite well. In the end, the so-called Thousand-year Reich died in its infancy. History and divine providence, which was so often was invoked by Hitler to legitimize his assent to power, proved to be against him in actuality.

Mediocre book on a little researched subject.......2004-12-26
I was expecting a lot more from this relatively expensive book, with its count of over 300 pages. Instead I found out that Munoz has all but skipped doing any primary researches, and apparently the services of an editor is not deemed necessary. So what we have is a book full of typographical errors, lousy maps, and verbose, redundant observations (which proved to be true and obvious) that the Luftwaffen Felddivisionen was a waste of precious manpower and a futile vanity play of Göring.
What the author has missed, in his mouthing of the post war spin by the Heer that the excess Lutwaffe personnel should better be turned over for rebuilding/replenishing the Heer divisions after Stalingrad, is the fact that while, despite the opposition and discrimination by the Wehrmacht, the Waffen SS managed to build a formidable force with mostly Volksdeutche conscripts (who were supposed to be of inferior quality to the Reichdeutsche), the Luftwaffen Felddivisionen, consisted mostly of better educated, top drawer Reichdeutsche, were abject failures, even after being incorporated into the Heer in November 43.
And the gross stupidity of the Heer, after taking over the divisions as Felddivisionen (L.), in going for a 3 regiment (of 2 battailon each) organizational structure (instead of the existing, understrength 2 regiment x 3 battailon each) when it knew that the major defects of the LFD were a shortage of qualified field officers (this applies also to the regular Heer divisions) never crosses Munoz's mind, himself totally engrossed by the post war crap spinned by the few German authors who wrote on the
subject.
The crux of the matter was that not only should the LFD never be built, but that the valuable manpower should be alloted to the Waffen SS, which has proven to be much more capable, without the help of the Heer, in building an elite fighting force, even with much poorer human material, than the hidebound Heer could ever iamgine.
Amazing research on fascinating warriors.......2004-01-19
This is the tragic story of how 200 000 smart and often technically gifted soldiers were squandered by the incompetence, or rather: the policies, of Goering and Hitler. Yes, as many as 200 000 men served in the almost unknown Luftwaffe field divisions, set up because Goering couldn't imagine handing over his surplus men to the army, badly in need of manpower.
What you get is 380 fact-filled pages with an unusual high amount of tactical maps, several good photos never before published and some facsimile documents. The text is to a great extent based on ground-breaking research in archives by the author himself.
Of greatest interest for armor buffs like yours truly is the photo of a TK-3 tankette pulling a 37 mm PaK in Norway 1943. Amazing!
The book is nicely bound and as far as the textual info and the research behind is concerned I'd give this book five stars. There is no question that it is a must for any serious student of the Luftwaffe ground units. I only wish there'd been more photos and personal accounts. Perhaps a follow-up will come with more photos and info on the vehicles, uniforms and with some small-scale accounts? Hopefully the author will one day produce such a book.
Finally, its pretty amazing to again learn how Hitler could meddle in small details like moving the 12th LW FeldDiv. As CINC he should have stuck to strategy. No, I correct myself - he should never have left Vienna!

very easy to read, lots of examples, bright pictures and diagrams.......2007-08-13
i like this book a lot. it has bright pictures and diagrams, gives lots of good examples to make things easier to understand, and is not too wordy. this is a book i will actually read.
top notch medical micro book.......2006-12-05
I've written reviews for several textbooks, and it is not uncommon for me to rant extensively about high prices and the use of color solely for the purpose of making a book appear flashy. In the case of Mims Medical Microbiology though, I have nothing but good things to say. This is an example of a book that uses quite a bit of color, but does so with good purpose. Moreover the color is not overdone, and it is generally used effectively to draw the reader's attention to important concepts or to make illustrations more clear, or realistic. While the price of the book is not trivial, this is still an excellent bargain when one considers the quality of the content. The text is is clearly written and well organized for learning. I highly recommend it for those looking for excellent introductory materials on medical microbiology.
Wise Choice for Learning Infectious Diseases.......2001-06-16
This text book is outstanding in terms of clear pictures and detailed descriptions. It exhibits numerous color photos which help remember the clinical signs and appearances of common infectious diseases. On the other hand, the text excellently outlines and explains the underlying theory and treatments. This book takes a modern approach to teach Microbiology by introducing the contents in a system based mannar. This is very different from the traditional way of teaching the subject in which the materials are delivered species by species. I think this way is more clinically relevant and thus, suits the needs of health care students.
A Necessary Resource for any Microbiologist.......2000-04-23
Medical Microbiology would be an excellent reference book for any microbiologist. It contains general information about any bacterium you can imagine as well as overviews of the diseases various bacteria cause. Symptoms, complications, diagnosis, and treatment options are covered in detail. The book also contains wonderfully vivid pictorial accounts of the bacteria and their various modes of pathogenicity. A fascinating, well-organized text of sophisticated microbiology!
surprisingly easy to understand microbiology with you!!!.......1998-03-14
At least a very "biologically correct" textbook of microbial diseases, I'm going to translate it only for fun, for me and for my italian entourage; and so many beautiful pictures that I never seen before in a similar text in Italy. I'd like to translate it for publication if possible. Antonio Angioi (microbiologist), Sassari, Italy

Absolutely great book!!!.......2005-03-02
Almost 50 years after World War II, the collectors who possess the priceless art once plundered by the Nazis are dying under mysterious circumstances. The CIA calls on renegade counter-terrorist Mike Semko to team up with a beautiful Israeli agent to track down the master terrorist who holds the explosive list of collectors. Full of twists, action, great characters, Goering's List is simply a great read.
Non-stop action..........2003-07-14
The back cover of this book states "From the ashes of the Third Reich... To the ashes of the Cold War..." No doubt, "Goering's List" is an entertaining and clever novel about a valuable list that falls into the wrong hands. When Heinz Stasser, a former major in the Waffen SS, dies of a heart attack, his terrorist son learns of the secret life he led prior to the end of World War II. He also stumbles upon a list, Goering's List, a detailed account of the illegal sales of stolen art to prominent collectors all over the world. Many of the collectors are still alive, and the son sees great potential value in stealing the prized art to fund his various terrorist activities. However, the terrorist son does not yet know the true value of the list... And that secondary value has the Israelis, the Americans, and the Russians hot on his heels.
This is a great old-fashioned potboiler that World War II history buffs will find great pleasure in perusing. I've never read J.C. Pollock before. I just picked the book off the shelf, intrigued by its cover. But I'll definitely read more of his work in the future.

A very engaging thriller!.......2003-06-26
This is the first book I've read by J.C. Pollock, and I thought it was a well-worthwhile and entertaining thriller. Perfect for a rainy day. When an old, forgotten S.S. officer passes away, his son comes into possession of a list of art sales Herman Goering made to various art collectors. A former Soviet-spy and terrorist, the son sees the value of the list as a way of filling his bank account by stealing the art himself. What he doesn't see is the true value of the list, and that leads much of the world to chase him down. A definite read.
Fun Fiction.......2002-04-18
This is a fun and fast paced World War 2 based current day book that actually works. The author has the CIA, the Mossad and the Stasi all after some old masters that were stolen by guess whom? The author has done a good job here, the characters are well developed and there are enough sub plots to keep you interested but not to overwhelm the central story. I was concerned with the number of people running around, maybe dropping a few would have done the book good and the biggest issue I have is the love story. Why have this in the book? It is not needed, rushed and just done poorly. Overall I thought the book was above average and interesting.
Not the greatest.......2001-12-31
First let me say that I am still reading this book, and I am more than 3/4 of the way through it but I can't stand it anymore. I have to say something. I do not pick up books like this expecting them to be Pulitzer material. I just want a fun, well paced, put-together read.
So far my head is spinning with all of the characters the author has tossed into the fray. Rather than narrowing his focus, Pollock gives us an ever-expanding cast of characters. It seems he liked all of the usual key espionage players so much he couldn't bear to leave anyone out. The resulting mess is filled with Mossad, CIA, Russian intelligence, British intelligence, local police - you name it. In fact it gets so out of hand that Pollock and his editors failed to realize that he changes a character's name entirely! On page 111 we have "Paris station chief, Parker Britin Stevenson II."
Oops! Apparently he didn't like his name too much because on page 331 he becomes "Palmer Stevenson, Paris station chief". What makes this even more ridiculous is that Parker Stevenson is actually the name of a celebrity, albeit a minor one nowadays. But if anyone remembers Parker Stevenson as one of the Hardy Boys on TV (and now as Kirsty Alley's husband. Or maybe they divorced - who knows?) this ridiculous editing gaffe is even more obvious. Not to mention the typos. Maybe it's because I am a journalist, but I always try to read my own stuff before it goes to print. This novel (although it has some great action scenes) is laden with trite coincidences, riddled with cliche (OK, anything in this genre has SOME, but come on) and could have used some more attention and reworking before it went to print, because the basic idea is terrific.

Customer Reviews:
A Mediocre Reference Book.......2004-06-21
The book was a good buy for the information it contains. The book is made of good quality paper and the cover has excellent graphics and finish.
The author tells the story of the evalution of the Herman Goering unit from a small police force(Goering's first job was the head of the police)up through the creation into a panzer division. There are some excellent photos of some of the unusual uniforms worn by the Luftwaffe troops that fought as infantry and armored troops.
The problem I have with this book is that it is difficult to use as a reference book. There is NO INDEX that would assist in research and referring back to a topic. And it is difficult to find things in the book because of how it is arranged. The book begins with the history of a battalion. Then it will have a chapter about the Anti-Aircraft unit. Then the next higher unit. Each chapter almost stands alone in the history that unit. So you may read about the war in Italy in one part of the book and then skip to another to read more of the same period. It does not follow a chronological order.
The book does have maps but most are German maps without translations. The Appendices have some good tables of organization, Knight Cross winners and officers.
An amazing book on the only Luftwaffe Armored Division inww2.......2000-09-29
Franz Kurowski details this unit's unique history, from a police unit, to a full Fallschirm Panzer Korps. This unit fought in France, North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and the Eastern Front late in the war.
Full organizational tables, commanders, equpiment, small unit action recollections of veterans...this one has it all! There are not many books about this unique division, and this is the most complete UNIT HISTORY out there.
Buy it if you are at all interested in Luftwaffe field divisions, or elite german panzer divisions of ww2.
