Book Description
The Effective Executive in Action is a journal based on Peter F. Drucker's classic and preeminent work on management and effectiveness -- The Effective Executive. Here Drucker and Maciariello provide executives, managers, and knowledge workers with a guide to effective action -- the central theme of Drucker's work. The authors take more than one hundred readings from Drucker's classic work, update them, and provide provocative questions to ponder and actions to take in order to improve your own work. Also included in this journal is a space for you to record your thoughts for later review and reflection. The Effective Executive in Action will teach you how to be a better leader and how to lead according to the five main pillars of Drucker's leadership philosophy.
Customer Reviews:
Drucker lives on.......2006-03-03
This is a great tool for any working executive. It's old fashioned in the sense that you have to think and then act. I would recommend it to anyone in a management position or a potential management position.
The Effective Executive In Action.......2006-03-01
The most important workbook a leader will ever use. Essential for any leadership development program, MBA, business student, and all executives. This will change your life - just use it.
For the Reflective Practicioner.......2006-02-17
This journal is just that...a personal journal. It guides you through several thought provoking scenarios and asks you how you feel, think, what you will/can do, etc. If you do not like to think, this is not a product you will enjoy. If, however, you enjoy noodling over your own thoughts, actions, feelings, and working through them to a plan for personal/professional development, this is a must buy item.
Drucker is someone who yields more and more every time you read him. This journal will help you collect a rich harvest of useable ideas.
The Effective Executive by Peter Drucker et........2005-12-12
The author has written another classic on the dynamics of
executive management. The book suggests that organizations and
the people who run them need to assess what must be done
as a condition precedent to directing their energies productively. Time is the classic limiting factor. It applies
to the activities of everyone in the organization. The effective use of discretionary time is another important asset. The success
of organizations over time is dependent upon an uneventful
transition strategy together with the ability to continue
the business as a going concern. In Accounting, the Quasi-
Reorganization in bankruptcy provides the needed second chance
for organizations to start over again- although standard reporting requirements call for dating the retained earnings
into the future. Companies having extensive overseas operations and outsourcing must be more vigilant about disaster
recovery and contingency planning for random Acts of G-d. These
unplanned emergencies may consist of a tsunami, earthquake or
expropriation in countries where the political infrastructure
is fragile or unpredictable.
The author suggests that the organization give much thought into
choosing people and assignments to optimize organizational
strengths rather than magnifying weaknesses for short term
gain. Ultimately, maximizing strengths renders weaknesses to be
irrelevant. Each job should be structured to accommodate the
personality of the occupant(s). Accordingly, this strategy
will go a long way toward perpetuating the organization well
into the future. In addition, training and development of staff
is an important aspect of work. These activities will provide
threshold competencies so that employees can function maximally.
In addition, training assists in the development of successor
employees due to retirements, job transfers etc.
With the right people matched to the right jobs, an organization
can move forward. In addition, maximization of an individual's
strengths obviates the necessity for the classic flight/fight
phenomena in an organization. In implementation, the management philosophy aims to accentuate strengths rather than exploit weaknesses which may result in a sum zero conflict.
This rendition does not emphasize the optimal organizational
design to accomplish work, although the dynamics may vary from
firm to firm. Organizational conflicts may be reduced by
looking at the following options dispassionately:
- considering the flat organizational hierarchy with less
vertical integration, where possible
- controlling predictor information more carefully
- completing a comprehensive job and task analysis for all
company positions and vital job categories in particular
- standardizing complex operations and codifying knowledge so
that expertise is not a barrier to performing a job within
a shorter learning curve ( today artifical intelligence systems
and expert system algorithms may help accomplish this task)
- transferring employees within an organization and providing
more challenging scenarios
- providing employees a share in the ownership of the company
through stock plans or employee representation on the Board
- support and funding for staff training/development and
personal growth
- a clear and uncomplicated succession strategy
The book will assist corporate planners, human resource personnel, students of organizational design
and a large constituency of scholars in academe. It is worth
the price for the huge value of the information content contained therein.

Don't be deceived by the blockbuster size of W.E.B. Griffin's third installment in the Honor Bound series. Secret Honor is an intricate book that reveals a remarkable attentiveness to historical detail and characterization. It is also a top-notch thriller set in Griffin's quasi-fictional version of WWII.
The plot is woven with so many threads, all of them worthwhile, that it actually feels more like a chronicle than a novel, but the central story takes up the continuing adventures of OSS agent Cletus Frade. Frade, a U.S. Marine whose father was almost the president of Argentina, was raised in Texas and now uses his father's special status in Argentine society to penetrate Nazi plans for South America. This time, however, Frade is not so much fighting the Nazis as supporting them. While one group, Himmler among them, is secretly stashing funds in Argentina to prepare for an escape when the Reich finally crumbles, a second group, including a German general and his son, are actually plotting to assassinate Hitler. Meanwhile, the OSS is on the verge of ex-communicating Frade, given his unwillingness to reveal the identity of the son, code-named "Galahad."
The details are what make this book: Cletus Frade is imprinted on the mind, clad in grease-stained khaki trousers, spouting Spanish-Texan four-letter epithets, and sporting cowboy boots as he repairs his father's ravaged old Horch touring sedan at Estancia San Pedro y San Pablo. Particularly engaging is Griffin's account of Argentine upper-strata social "politics," as Father Welner steers Cletus into his inevitable marriage. Reading Secret Honor, one enters many vividly drawn places--from Nazi secret meetings to Argentine estates--that bring this pivotal era to life. Finishing the book leaves one feeling a rare combination of sadness in leaving close colleagues behind and exhilaration at having witnessed history being made. --Patrick O'Kelley

Customer Reviews:
W.E.B. Griffin - Secret Honor.......2007-01-12
If you like Griffin as I do, this is another good tale. You learn a little real history along the way. If you don't know Griffin, he tells very good readable stories but they are certainly not Shakespear. Purely fun with a little true history thrown in.
WW2 in Argentina........2006-08-01
Again WEB Griffin provides information about areas of conflict not writtn about. With its polyglot population of Italian, German, and British immigrants it must have been a hotbed of intrigue. He brings it to life.
Secret Honor.......2005-05-01
Griffins book Secret Honor is a big dissappointment, I would suggest he has become a troll of commercialism. No plot, no suspence, no excitement, no story line. This book reads like a soap opera, a high school student could have written a better story. It seems Griffin is relying on his name to sell this book, also his other novels in this series are somewhat dull and redundent in character. I hope he wakes up, I will not purchase or recommend any more of his books.
Excellent detail, but lacking substance.......2004-10-15
This book was a disappointment. While it seems like the book is relatively realistic (unless you count the fact that there are military officers that are allowed to run around, doing as they please), it lacks the story to make use of that realism. The plot is hard to follow, taking turns that end up right where they started. It seems that throughout the book, the reader is bothered with the characters' problems that simply exist and do not affect the character.
This book has an somewhat interesting plot, but it is bogged down with memos between Nazi officers, which take attention away from the main plot. There is simply too much information to keep straight, especially since many of the titles of the character's are in German. A large portion of the book could have been eliminated, and the book would have made more sense and had more impact.
When I finished the book, I was not beside myself that I would never again experience that adventure of the characters again. I was happy that I was done with the book, and I then wondered where all my time had gone. At the end of the book, I ended up having a greater knowledge of the Nazi beuracracy. This is not a book that I would recommend.
READING CON BRIO.......2004-02-23
Griffin proved himself to be a champion of military suspense with "Honor Bound" and "Blood and Honor." Brace yourselves for a roller coaster of thrills because he's done it again.
In "Secret Honor," a German general plots the assassination of Adolf Hitler. At the same time in Buenos Aires the general's son is targeted by the SS following a botched Nazi operation. OSS agent Cletus Frade knows them both and he knows the truth. But, Frade is branded a rogue agent by the OSS. All three men are in peril.
As always, Tony Award nominee Lang reads with brio. His stellar performance is the perfect showcase for this astoundingly well crafted story.

Complete plans for making five marvelous moving machines out of the 60 special LEGO pieces that come with the book and another five using some basic pieces you've already got at home. Written by Don Rathjen and the editors of Klutz. For ages 7 and up.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect lego addition.......2007-06-08
This set contains pieces that are the perfect addition for any growing lego collection, especially as kids become more proficient building more complex inventions. My 5 year old loves the challenge of building new things by herself. The building ideas in the book are great.
Great ideas for lego loving kids.......2007-01-11
This book kept my son engaged in building even though he already owns a tremendous amount of Lego sets. The building ideas were unique and educational for him.
Killer things to build.......2007-01-11
One of the only times I have seen my nephew (age 7) really stay focused on a project that required following directions. He's very independent and it was quite difficult to convince him that there may be something to sticking with the book through the steps, that someone might be able to teach him a thing or two about building with legos (his personal lego projects are pretty insane). Bu after we built the first project (tight-rope walker) the authors earned his stamp of approval.
Finally! Something to do with ALL THOSE LEGOS!.......2007-01-10
We bought this book as a Christmas gift for our 10-year-old nephew [in combination with The Ultimate Lego Book]. With two tubs of Lego pieces already in his possession, we figured he didn't need yet another set of Legos... but perhaps something nifty to build with them all. And judging from how big and wide his eyes got when he opened Crazy Action Contraptions, I think our gifts this year were a big hit!
Wonderful Book!!!.......2007-01-10
We have a million legos that were never getting used. My son thought he had to build everything he got and then just let them sit there. Once they got destroyed, he never used them again. This book was wonderful in helping him use his imagiionation to build with his legos. I highly reccomend this book!

No adults, no permit, no river map. Just some "borrowed" gear from Discovery Unlimited, the outdoor education program Jessie and her new companions have just ditched. Jessie and the others are having the time of their lives floating beneath sheer red walls, exploring unknown caves and dangerous waterfalls, and plunging through the Grand Canyon's roaring rapids. No one, including Troy, who emerges as the group's magnetic and ultimately frightening leader, can forsee the challenges and conflicts.
What will be the consequences of their reckless adventure?

No adults, no permit, no river map, just some "borrowed" gear from Discovery Unlimited. That's how their adventure began. Seven different teens set out by themselves in the Grand Canyon not knowing what will happen. They all have their own different problems and learn many new things about themselves and about each other.
I'd have to say that I don't have a favorite part of this book because I liked it all the same; it was really adventurous and exciting.
The theme of this book I would say is be thankful for what you have. I think this because in the book one of the teens named Jesse goes to the summer camp Discovery Unlimited angry at her parents and she doesn't really care about anything.
I really like how this book had a lot of adventure and action. I wouldn't have changed anything about this book. I think people who should read it are ones that really like adventure or action.
Great book for reluctant readers.......2007-05-10
Outdoor action, adventure, thrills - reluctant readers will really like this book. Jesse and her new friends have decided to ditch the outdoor adventure trip they signed up for and strike out on their own. Helicopters and searchers are looking for the renegade group everywhere. Meanwhile, serious problems start to develop within the group. Will they make it back to safety or have their foolish choices doomed them? This is a great book to get teenagers hooked on because Will Hobbs has written many more great books for them to continue reading.
Down River.......2007-04-06
Down River
Down River is a book about troubled decent teens going to a camp. The problem is a mean camp consoler who is giving the kids a hard time, and the kids are sick of it. So the teens steal the camp and are heading towards the Grand Canyon. When they get their, they sail the Colorado River. But soon in the adventure turns into a disaster. Bad weather comes while the kids are sailing and they are stranded in the middle of the river. I think the book was.
Downriver, a review by Allison, Kevin, and Hannah!.......2007-03-13
"Downriver!"
Running the rapids of the Grand Canyon, seven kids find adventure, friendship, and themselves. Will Hobbs writes a thrilling survival book called Downriver, which is similar to Hatchet, by Gary Paulson, but with its own twists and turns. This book is similar to Hatchet, but there are seven kids who must work together, instead of one who must work alone. Eight kids are sent to Discovery Unlimited or as they call it "Hoods in the Woods," steal equipment and take a joy ride on the Colorado River. After one bails, it's down to them to overcome their fears and this obstacle. After getting tossed around like luggage in the Colorado River, these kids have to take it up a notch. Not only was the river a problem, but they were doing this illegally with people chasing after them. Will Hobbs uses dialogue and thoughts to bring out the life in the characters, and also uses sensory images.
Will Hobbs is a tremendous author using descriptive language, and strong adjectives to get the reader really into the book. To show this, he has many awards in his trophy case. Some of these are the Notable Book Award, Best Book for Young Adults, Teachers' Choice Awards, and the Regional Book Award. But the only reason he has won this many awards is because his books are a captivating read. The idea for this book came out of Will Hobbs' own experiences. He got this idea because he has gone rafting in the Grand Canyon ten times and wanted to share his love of the Canyon with young readers. We recommend this book to anyone who loves a little excitement, adventure and suspense. Kids from ages 9 to 14 would enjoy this novel. Will Hobbs created a thrilling survival that will lead people to believe that good can come out of bad.
Downriver.......2006-10-16
Would you ride a raft with extreme water or would you climb a very slippery? Would you even any of them? This book is about kinds that think that they are so tough but have so many fears, and not even willing to tell anybody about it. Five kids go on an adventure that will leave them scarred for life. Some books are hard to come by, and this book is one of them. One of the characters on this book that pop out to me was a girl named Star. She is always joking, singing, and all other crazy stuff, but when it comes to helping others she is shy. So like I said before you can be very outgoing but have so many insecurities and not say anything to anybody. The more and more you read you see that star is getting over her shyness. This book is the one to when you feel stressed and insecure I give this book five stars. My recommendation is the best.

Book Description
At fifteen, Tony Laporte is what many people would call a throughly spoiled kid. He gets away with a lot because his parents want him to have all the things they never had. But when they surprise him by refusing to let him keep a stray dog he has found, Tony decides to teach them a lesson by running off in his mother's old Plymouth. Driving without a license in the middle of a severe snowstorm, he picks up a hitchhiker named Cindy Reichert, an aloof girl who has always had difficulty forming friendships. To impress Cindy, Tony tries to show off his driving skills and ends up wrecking the car in a very desolated area far from the main highway. After spending precious days bickering with each other and waiting for rescue that never comes, they finally realize that their lives are at stake and they must cooperate to survive. The question is--can they survive?

I had to read this book for a school project and all fot he other students thought that it was boring. Personally I thinkt hat they are just saying that beucase it would be "uncool" to think that it was cool.I think that it is was a good book becauseit was based on the truth.
Snowbound .......2007-03-29
I would recommend this book to readers who are intersted in books that have to deal with outside, nature, with kids who experince being on their own with no parents. I think that this is more of a teenager's book because it has to deal with two teenagers who have problems that they are going through and they learn how life is like being alone in the wilderness with no one to help them.

One of the best study bibles I've come across!!!.......2007-01-28
I really enjoy this bible. There are many great references as well as cross-references to enable a better understanding of the word of God. The only thing that could be improved is the thickness of the pages - they are a bit too thin, which makes the ink bleed through slightly. Other than that, this is a very good study bible and I recommend it. It's wonderful for either group bible studies or individual sessions.
Book Description
Both professional and student illustrators of action and fantasy art can take the guesswork out of rendering extreme anatomy and dynamic action poses with help from this valuable reference source. It presents more than 600 detailed color photos of live models, and represents a wide range of physiques, postures, and poses that can be incorporated in fantasy scenarios. The book's accompanying CD-ROM contains all of the book's posed images, allowing illustrators to swipe them directly and paste them into their own computer art projects. The book also instructs on rendering realistic effects to the illustrated textures of flesh, hair, clothing, and metal objects, as well as advice on adding highlights, backlights, and shadows. Here is a valuable reference source that belongs in every illustrator's personal library. All images are copyright free.
Customer Reviews:
Great for figure reference .......2007-09-11
I really enjoyed this book. I actually downloaded the images onto my computer and use them as poses to draw from in the slide show format. Coupled with "The Natural Way to draw" this book really helps me out and gives me a "safe" place to learn away from the limelight, which is important to me.
This images are good and very well done and give you some really good costume studies (as well as drapery studies) on top of basic anatomy and muscle drawing.
Overall, a very good piece of work.
my review.......2007-07-04
This book is a welcome addition to any cartoonist or illustrator's photo reference file as it includes physical and ethnical types different from the usual stereotypical idealized caucasians. On the other hand, it isn't as systematic, varied or consistent in its poses and points-of-view as the Illustrator's Reference Manuals or the Posefile series of books.
Cliche Central.......2007-01-23
The 'Fantasy' of the title is, unfortunately, the heavily-stereotyped 'thud and blunder' style fantasy of Conan the Barbarian, Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser and other such hackneyed, outdated types.
The figures shown are Barbarian warrior, Warrior woman, Evil Sorceress, Fairy, etc. And they are all quite absurd.
The book also includes little tidbits of information about costume and weapons, like this pearl of wisdom: "The nock is the part of the bow that the arrow rests on." Uh, yeah?
Combine this with poses titled "Bring forth tidings", "Arise, my liege" and the like, you soon realise this isn't a particularly well-done piece of work.
As for the CD, the images are huge - making them very difficult to work with.
This book isn't completely useless, but there are surely better things to spend your money on.
Great for beginner fantasy artists!!.......2007-01-09
If you are new to the fantasy art genre or are looking for a great quick reference for figure drawing, this is the book. It gives a diverse selection of different body types, sizes and looks, as well as a good smattering of accesories, close-ups and clothing...
Not extreme or dynamic, but still has some good parts.......2007-01-03
Unfortunately, this book did not live up to my expectations. Overall, it was uninspiring to me, especially in creating my own characters. As a reference photo book, it fails because the poses are not extreme and dynamic as promised. It also seems to try to reach beyond its scope with a section on painting and many comments on characters beyond anatomy and costume.
Pros:
- "Anatomical studies" show each character type in only shorts (or shorts and sports bra for women) so you know what the body looks like in some poses.
- Summary of character wardrobe
- Poses of characters in wardrobe may help in drawing clothing -- depicting folds, how certain material hangs, etc.
- As another review mentioned, an overweight man ("cleric" and "norseman" types) and a small person ("warrior dwarf" type) are shown here, and both are helpful.
- Captions in the book often direct you to details (how material is bunching up a certain way, how a shoulder strap hangs off the body in a certain pose) or notes about anatomy ("legs need to be placed apart because they will have to bend to compensate for the weight of the ax")
- Section of close-up facial expressions (male and female)
- Although brief, there are also some photos of hand detail, including props like rings & bracelets, and accessory details -- boots, belts, jewelry
- Spiral binding allows the book to lay flat (although when you're drawing, you'll probably print images from the CD instead)
Cons:
- Uninteresting poses. This is the sale-killer for me. Although the book says the photos depict "extreme anatomy and dynamic action poses" I found the poses to be too plain. There was no "extreme" posing where the body is in extreme angles -- lunging, jumping, twisting. Instead, someone is standing still with their arms raised and feet spread, but there is no action happening. You can tell because there is a lack of tense muscles.
- The back of the book has a section on painting characters that seems out of place. This is a photo reference book, not a painting book. Unless you already know about painting with acrylics, this section is useless.
- Some captions have irrelevant comments. In a caption of a photo showing a happy "warrior prince" face, it notes, "All characters should be able to feel elation and happiness."
Summary: although a few poses are good, don't expect most of them to be "extreme" or "dynamic." Note that this is not an instruction book on learning anatomy, and you should have at least a basic understanding of human anatomy to use this book well.
Books that I would recommend for beginning artists:
- Human Anatomy Made Amazingly Easy by Christopher Hart
- Drawing the Living Figure by Joseph Sheppard
- Dynamic Figure Drawing by Burne Hogarth (great for flow of action)
- Perspective! For Comic Book Artists by David Chelsea
- Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery: Solutions for Drawing the Clothed Figure by Burne Hogarth
- Action Anatomy: For Gamers, Animators, and Digital Artists by Takashi Iijima
