Book Description
Some Even Volunteered provides a marvelous description and a succinct evaluation of the life and the achievement of the American soldier in Vietnam trying to "win the hearts and minds" of the Vietnamese. In a style reminiscent of Michael Herr in Dispatches but still distinctly his own, Bradford relates the story of the First Battalion of the 27th Infantry Regiment (First Wolfhounds) of the 25th Infantry Division as they pacified the district of Tri Tam. The First Battalion--which had the highest body count of any rifle battalion in Vietnam--was air-lifted into an NVA rest area south of Dau Tieng (IIId Brigade basecamp) in the district of Tri Tam on 24 October 1968. They had been ordered to interdict the NVA supply line that stretched from the Ho Chi Minh trail in Cambodia through Dau Tieng to Saigon. They were expected to complete their mission in three days, but they uncovered such an extensive network of headquarters, hospitals, supply, troop concentrations and local support that the mission was extended to a week, then to a month, and finally, to eight months. Eight months later, the Wolfhounds had succeeded. Their fire support base was assaulted three times, their Brigade base twice. They established four independent forts, ran missions throughout the Third Brigade Area of Operations, and accepted the surrender of dozens of Viet Cong and NVA. In effect, they had destroyed an NVA unit of their own size. In vivid, staccato prose, Bradford delivers a first-rate narrative. In addition, the last chapter, entitled, "The Will of the People," provides the reader with one of the best discussions ever written of Vietnam's assumed position in military history.

Excellent overview of the one year "tour of duty".......1999-09-24
An easily read summary of the author's experience in Vietnam. (I found it of interest as a veteran of the 25th Div. at the same time-several friends who arrived in country with me were assigned to the Wolfhounds). Mr. Bradford shows us the Vietnam War from the perspective of a young Civic Action Officer trained to "win the hearts and minds" of the civilian population. Through narratives of his own experience and those of others the reader is presented a view of the futility and mismanagement of that war while also describing the lives and experiences of the individual combat soldier and the Wolfhounds. Sometimes the dialoque was difficult to follow; ie., it wasn't always clear when the author was speaking in the first person and when another individual was speaking. However, once the reader picked up on the author's writing style the narrative made for fast reading. In the book's last section "What was it all about" the author brings the lessons of the Vietnam War clearly into perspective. I heartily agree with his statement that we should "not... confuse America with the politicians elected to administer America..." I would recommend this book to my children who have asked, "what was the Vietnam war like?"

The best Irish Wolfhound book out there.......2007-05-20
This is the best book for anyone considering an Irish Wolfhound. I wish I purchased this BEFORE getting my wolfhound. Lots of information on choosing, caring, breeding, and showing. I use it as a reference in all situations with my wolfhound.
One of the Best.......2007-01-07
This is a must-have book for every Irish Wolfhound owner. We ensure that our puppy people have a copy before the puppy goes home. My only complaint is that while the table of contents is extensive, there is no index. Overall though, this is a thorough and well written reference guide to the breed.
The best wolfie book.......2006-04-20
I have had wolfhounds for nearly 20 years. In all that time, and with all the books that I've looked at both breed specific and just 'doggy' this is the best for the wolfhound owner. The illustrations are great and there is an enormous amount of material.
The sections on breeding and genetics are very detailed, and bring a huge amount of information to the reader. The distinctions between wolfhound colour variation inheritance versus other dog breeds are very useful and interesting. We have used the book as a guide in our research into breeding and know other breeders that consider this the 'bible'.
The book could do with a decent index. You have to read the whole thing once so you can remember where the bits you want might be. It astonishes me that the index is not there.
The illustrations are beautiful, but they are mostly pictures of attractive dogs instead of specific illustrations of the subject matter in many instances.
The shortcomings do not stop this from being a superb book and the best for wolfhound owners and breeders.
Excellent.......2006-04-14
I can't say enough good things about this book. We purchased this book to prepare us for the Irish Wolfhound we hoped we would get one day. Thankfully we found a wonderful breeder and we have a new puppy. This book was great for getting us ready to bring her home as well as produce questions to ask the breeder.
Great Book!
Not just for display.......2005-07-20
Although this oversize book has the wonderful photographs and fascinating informational tidbits of a typical coffee-table volume, it offers more: practical instructions for choosing and raising a puppy and owning a hound. The comprehensive medical discussions are particularly important for managing the rather fragile health of these magnificent companion dogs.
Highly recommended by the breeder from whom we are purchasing a wolfhound, and we second that recommendation for anyone interested in the breed.

At the heart of Pam Houston's tender novel Sight Hound is a surprisingly thoughtful three-legged Irish wolfhound named Dante. Convinced that it is his responsibility to teach the humans around him about love, he concentrates his efforts on his owner Rae. While the thought of a canine in the lead role may give many pause, in this case it shouldn't. Houston manages to pull this aspect of the story off with skill and is able to create a multi-dimensional character out of a cancer-riddled old dog. She's not quite as successful with the humans in her story, however, and the array of voices the story is told in quickly becomes confusing.
A decent novel on its own, Sight Hound may leave long-time Houston fans feeling a little cheated. Personal essays and short stories like those in Cowboy Are My Weakness and A Little More About Me stir the heart and endear readers to Houston's signature blend of over-the-top confidence and girlish insecurity. Fans will gobble this effort up while anxiously waiting for more from Houston, but readers new to her work might do better to start on her earlier titles. --Victoria Griffith
Book Description
The long-awaited novela very special love storyfrom the best-selling author of Cowboys Are My Weakness.
This is the story of a woman, Rae, and her dog, Dante, a wolfhound who teaches "his human" that love is stronger than fear (the dog has always known this). Dante is the catalyst for change in other characters as well, and they step forward with their narratives: Rae's house-tender; her therapist; two veterinarians; and an anxiety-ridden actor, Howard, who turns out to be as stalwart as Dante himself. As the "seer" who hunts by sight rather than smell, Dante has some things to add, as does Rose, another dog who lives at Rae's heels, and Stanley the cat. Among and above these myriad voices, Rae voices her own challenges.
With the wit and dead-on candor we've come to expect from Pam Houston, Sight Hound unfolds a story that illuminates the intangible covenant between loved ones. Here, dogs and humans are simply equal creatures, looking to connect and holding on for dear life when they do.
Customer Reviews:
For anyone whose ever loved a dog...........2007-07-26
This book was a bit hard to get into, but grabbed me and held me tight soon thereafter. A must read for anyone whose ever loved a dog as much as a person. I loved the unique way she told the story from many perspectives, especially the dogs.
I really wanted to give this 5 stars.......2007-03-25
This book pulled my heart strings. I too lost my "soul mate" dog to bone cancer and it was eerie how many links there were to my real life. Hearing Dante talk was theraputic, I would dearly love to know what my dogs think. Rose describing her favourite treat couldn't have been put better! The emotional ups and downs between the humans and dogs are the best I've read and help put this book in my top 10.
I also loved Pam Houston's chapter in Dog is my Co-Pilot.
But the first chapter is tough (power through everyone it is worth it!) and the human characters are not real, they seem "Hollywood" (ie created for a television movie and manipulated).
Fall in love with Dante.......2007-01-10
This is one of my top 5 favorite books. Dante is a dog that you will fall in love with- one you will cry for- and one that will bring you hope. Houston shows with a unique perspective what our companion animals can bring to our lives.
Heart - felt gems of wisdom but lacking in convincing plot development.......2006-08-10
There is much to like about this book, but it is not ultimately as satisfying as it might have been. First, the many good things.
If you like dogs, know one, have one, would like to have one, then what's likeable about the book is the homage it pays to dogs and what they can do for people. For folks very rooted in empiricism, it may be a little over the top, because the dogs are given complex consciousness, understanding, and generosity. But for dog lovers, it can be fun to imagine that degree of complex thinking in our canine companions. The dogs are hard not to love.
The writing is light and funny. Great turns of phrase, irony, hyperbole, even jokes. So it's an amusing read.
The story touches on some poignant themes, especially the illness of the main dog character, an Irish wolfhound named Dante. There are two important aspects of this theme: the refinement of veterinary medicine through Dante as experimental treatment subject; and the emotional growth of Dante's owner Rae as she comes to terms with loving and losing her beloved Dante through illness and death.
Another appealing theme is Rae's progress through faulty love affairs to finally emerge with enough self-love to recognize a good love match when it comes her way. [Dante is given as much credit for this outcome as either of the human protagonists, and that's another bit of dog homage that may appeal to doglovers but might leave the uninitiated cold.]
Now the not so good aspects of this novel.
Another reviewer here made the point that there are lots of characters who speak and tell the story and that it can get confusing. I didn't share the confusion but I couldn't get interested in all the perspectives because some of the characters were not developed enough for me to care what they thought of things. They seemed like extraneous filler.
And that leads me to agree with yet another reviewer here that the voice and language or each character were not distinct. Several characters blended right in with each other so that it seemed to be the same perspective offered despite the different names assigned to the narrative.
Finally, the book had a good beginning and strong ending, but the middle part didn't seem to go anywhere. There is a suicide midway that doesn't seem related to other things going on in the book. There is a hockey player character who is too exaggerated to be either interesting or convincing. A drought that the main characters must endure conveys respect for nature and the characters' nostalgia for the beauty of the Colorado landscape. But because not all of the characters are well developed to be important, the novel reads like good, strong bookends holding up a library of only mild interest.
That said, I still recommend the book for the positive qualities I mentioned above, because it has moments that are moving, and because it is entertaining.
A Book For Dog Lovers.......2006-05-26
With the current glut of mystery/thriller fiction available, it is nice to see an auther explore thoughts, feelings, love and relationships, particularly those between human and animal.
The two Wolfhounds and the cat in this story are elegantly portrayed and very enjoyable. The humans for the most part are less believable and not as likeable.
I'd recommend this story for those who have lost a cherished four-legged family member, or those who fear losing the same.

Book Description
In the noble and dangerous times of medieval France, the young knight Aubrey de Montdidier, nephew of the Count of Montargis, has been strangely murdered. His friend the brave Sieur DeNarsac, captain of the count's men-at-arms, and Thierry, a young page, must now solve the tragic mystery. Yet it is a magnificent white wolfhound by the name of Dragon -- Montdidier's faithful companion -- who brings an unexpected, shocking conclusion to the puzzle of his master's untimely death.
New York Times best-selling authors Julie Andrews Edwards and Emma Walton Hamilton weave a tapestry of intrigue, power, loyalty, and friendship in this novel based on the captivating French legend of Montargis.

Too sad Dragon is not Irish Wolfhound...........2006-01-01
This is a very nice book that every kid will love. The story is well kown legend of my country (france)with a lot of action and very good details of the middle age. Unfortunately, the author has obviously never met an Irish Wolfhound. I own one and believe me she has absolutely no idea of the power, strengh, weight and size of those dog!! Her descriptions are those of a large german sheperd not of a 75kg Wolfhound.
If you are an Irish Wolfhound owner and buy this book for that reason, you will be disapointed.
A really good book.......2005-08-12
My daughter really loved this book. She is entering 4th grade and it was perfect for her.
A great book!.......2005-03-30
The book is about a dog and knights. There are a lot of surprising details in the book. The characters are all great, too. My favorite character is Dragon the dog. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes knights in battle. Thank you Julie Andrews for writing this book.
doggone dragon.......2004-07-10
A story of mystery and suspense, a book of honoring, and a thriller for the whole family. This book, dragon, is like a Sherlock Holmes mystery: Dragon is the explainer of what happened, DeNarsac is Sherlock, and Thierry is Watson.
I suggest this book if your interested in the things below:
1.Mystery
2.Medieval times
3.Knights
4.Dear Watson
By Jake
Kids will undoubtedly enjoy this excellent book........2004-07-07
You can definitely count on books from the Julie Andrews Collection to contain good story lines and inspiring messages. DRAGON: Hound of Honor is a perfect example of the fine quality work the collection encompasses.
When the knight, Aubrey de Montdidier, mysteriously disappears there is an immediate sense of something amiss. Everyone in the kingdom is shocked, dismayed and horrified when, with the help of the knight's dog, Dragon, his bloodied body is found. No one can imagine why this terrible thing has happened, least of all his best friend Guy deNarac and his young page Thierry, plus Aubrey's future bride, the lovely Lady Isabelle. Through the dog, Dragon, a most unlikely suspect is eventually found, but how can a dog communicate this kind of information?
Many interesting characters bring this story to life, but the most fascinating one is Dragon, the great white wolfhound. This dog is intelligent and loyal, and ultimately helps bring the murderer of his young master to justice. Readers will be amazed at the dog's courage and willingness to sacrifice himself --- this is the story of a real hero.
Multiple expressions and words, which reflect both the time period and the French language, are found throughout the book. Helpful glossaries of French-English and medieval terms are provided for readers at the end. The authors have worked hard to tell a wonderful story and give an accurate picture of life during medieval times. Kids will undoubtedly enjoy this excellent book, which is perfect to use in an educational setting. Recommended for grades 5-8.

Paktika: The Story of the 2nd Battalion 27th Infantry.......2007-05-29
I had the pleasure to serve under Col. Piatt as a Wolfhound in the Paktika province of Afghanistan. It is an expierience I will always treasure. I learned more about myself and the nobility of soldiering in that year than any other. I can say that Col. Piatt is an officer who lives his beliefs and leads by example. He was the soldier with the most "wheel time" and the longest time "outside the wire" in the Battalion. In essence that meant he spent more of our deployment in a vehicle, on the frontiers,in the face of danger than any of the soldiers in his command. This behaviour goes a long way to inspire an Infantryman who is tired, scared and homesick. Thanks again Sir, No Fear!
Insight into the heart, mind and soul of this commander........2006-06-08
Since we as a country, are involved in the war on terror, we have troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan. No matter how we as individuals feel about being involved in this war, all of us support the troops. This book portraying the human side of war gives good reason for that support.
Lt. Colonel Walter E. Piatt's book PAKTIKA (The story of the 2n Battalion 27th Infantry "Wolfhounds" in Paktika, Afghanistan gives insight into the thoughts and emotions of this army officer on active duty.
The format is mostly poetry with each section introduced in prose. These parts--Deployment, Real War, Real Soldiers, Freedom, Next of Kin, Family, Insurgency, Rest and Relaxation, and Leaving Afghanistan--all give inspiration for poems related to each subject.
Patika Province is along the border of Pakistan. The enemy were difficult to identify since they wore no uniforms and hid behind civilians and in remote villages where they spread propaganda to the people. The Wolfhounds counteracted the latter by delivering medical supplies and holding clinics to build trust and confidence. The conducted these missions along with Afghan friends which brought the people of remote villages to begin to trust their own government officials.
In addition to engaging the enemy in combat, the Wolfhounds were fighting for the will of the people, helping make it possible for them to register, vote, and gain their freedom.
The poetry is intimate, simple, and revealing. You will be reading a journal which gives you insight into the heart, mind, and soul of this commander. He uses his intelligence, training, skills, and compassion to carry out his duties to God, his country, his fellow soldiers, his family, and on behalf of all of us.
(This review is written by Florence DeRemer, who is the great aunt of Cynthia Piatt, wife of Colonel Walter E. Piatt who, since returning to his base in Hawaii, has been promoted to Colonel.)
