Great information.......2007-10-05
I'm NOT a sailor yet, but am in the "early retirement planning" stage (meaning sailing lessons and drooling over boats). In about 6 - 8 years we will have a boat and will be spending a lot of time in the Bahamas. This book really gives a lot of excellent information on just about everything you need, and more stuff on the things you want to know.
I highly recommend this book and this author to any one, sailor or not!
On and Off the Beaten Path: The Cent/South Bahamas Guide.......2006-02-27
The initial review looks great! When I get to the Bahamas the real review will begin.
Lacking.......2003-02-21
I am getting ready to take off for the Bahamas next month so I decided to take a trip to the ship's store and have a look at the cruising guides. I am heading to the Southern Bahamas so you would think that this guide would be perfect. It is NOT. I took a quick look through the contents and index and discovered he did not cover the Exumas. How could this be? Ah... Mr. Pavlidis wants you to buy YET ANOTHER of his books, one specifically covering the Exumas. Appauling. How can you say you are covering the central and southern Bahamas WITHOUT even one chapter on the Exumas?
I think I will stick with my trusty Yachtsman's guide to the Bahamas. It actually covers the Bahamas. It does not leave out A WHOLE ISLAND CHAIN in order to suck up another 30 bucks.
The book's name should be The Central and Southern Bahamas Guide EXCLUDING a Great Deal of the Southern and Central Bahamas.
Good Grief!
One of the best.......2002-08-27
Pavlidis' guide will get you to places you didnt think you could visit. It also assumes you are a competent tropical water sailor and wont do stupid things like run into rocks, etc. Where other guides state "local knowledge required" for an area Pavlidis gives you the best current info and then warns you to be aware of possible changes and hazards. If you want to find places where there is still a lobster under every rock and no other boats in sight, this is the guide to use.

Off the Reading List.......2005-08-24
Unless you live in Montana or are very familiar with the State, then this book will be of little use. Get yourself a good guide book and a detailed map. Montana is a beautiful state, but this book was not helpful on our recent trip. And it's a very dull read, in my humble opinion. Pass.
A good little guide with character.......2004-12-27
I used this guide for a trip across southern Montana. The guide pointed me to such off-beat delights as the Road Kill Cafe ("from your grill to ours") in tiny McLeod, a place you won't find listed in most guidebooks. Another place you won't find in most guides is "The Big Open," a 15,000 square mile chunk of lonely land in the middle of Montana. The greatest attraction of The Big Open is the lack of attractions -- which makes it a place I'd like to go one of these days.
The guidebook divides Montana into five regions and lists interesting places to stay, old-time restaurants, museums and art galleries, annual events, and assorted trivia. Sidebars recount tidbits of Montana's history, especially tales of its cowboys and Indians. This guidebook is light and small and well-organized and all you need to find your way to interesting spots around the state, especially if you're the sort of person who's allergic to cute boutiques and cooker-cutter hotels and restaurants.
Book Description
Uncover North Dakota and South Dakota's best-kept secrets, such as the Corn Palace in Mitchell (where thousands of bushels of corn, wheat, grain, and grasses are used to create beautifully decorated mosaics) or the Fort Seward Wagon Train--a one-week wagon train reenactment.

Light, good guidebook .......2004-12-27
I used this guidebook for a visit to the Black Hills of South Dakota. If there's a more interesting place to visit than the Black Hills I haven't found it. The scenery is great, the wildlife abundant, and the history is fascinating. For example, the guidebook led me to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and the Red Cloud Heritage Center and Red Cloud's grave. (Red Cloud was a Dakota chief who defeated the U.S. army in 1868 and forced a withdrawal from Indian lands.) On a different level, the book also led me to Kevin Costner's casino and restaurant in Deadwood, as well as Will Bill Hickok's grave in the same town.
The guidebook divides the Dakotas into six regions and lists interesting places to stay, old-time restaurants, museums and art galleries, annual events, and assorted trivia. Sidebars recount tidbits of Dakota history, especially tales of its cowboys and Indians. This guidebook is light and small and well-organized and all you need to find your way to interesting spots, especially if you're the sort of person who's allergic to shopping malls and cooker-cutter hotels and restaurants

Good but not much to compare.......2002-07-30
My family was recently transferred to North Dakota with the Air Force. Before we moved we wanted to learn more about it, since we had never been here. It was very difficult to find ANYTHING in print about North Dakota. I finally found an older copy of this book in a book store in Anchorage, AK, and then went on-line and ordered the new edition.
While I think this book is pretty decent, I wish I could find a book with more pictures. While North Dakota is hardly considered a popular tourist destination, there IS some pretty scenery. I think this book would be better if they added some sections with pictures. Otherwise, the book is pretty good. I would recommend it to anyone considering travel in North Dakota (or South Dakota, it also has a section on that state), but then again I have not come across a single other book that focuses on North Dakota as much.
I learned a lot of new things about my home state.......2001-01-24
I really enjoyed reading all about the Dakotas. I plan on traveling to learn more about my roots. This book will really help me plan my travels.

Customer Reviews:
Nice book for visting Puerto Rico.......2007-04-23
I bought this book right before a trip to Puerto Rico. Although I wished I'd had more time to read it thoroughly before I left, I took it with us and we referred to it from time to time throughout our vacation. I believe if I had had enough time to read it cover to cover before leaving I would have been able to mark the pages of the things we wanted to do while there.
Some of the information concerning El Yunque was incorrect when we visited, but it wasn't too much a problem. First, when we visited the Caribbean National Forest, our cost was $3.00 per adult and children under 16 were free. This was cheaper than the book said, but it also has a disclaimer that all price information was accurate at the time of printing so that was just a pleassant surprise. The other thing was that the road (PR 191) to the El Yunque lookout was closed, and appeared to have been for some time.
Thanks to the book, we discovered a new Puerto Rican rum and we were able to do a free rum tasting while we were there. Helpful tip, make sure you don't go when the cruise ships are in. When we went the piers were empty and we had the place to ourselves.
The maps in the book are helpful in a pinch, but I would highly recommend purchasing a road map from Walgreens and using it instead, as the maps in this book are not very detailed.
his book contains helpful little lists of hotels, retsaurants and night clubs, and we did refer to those lists a time or two when trying to decide where to eat for the evening.
All in all, I would recommend this book to someone who is going to visit Puerto Rico, and I would also add that you should try to find time to read it thoroughly before you go.

Customer Reviews:
Great Information, horrible support............2004-07-21
I've been reading (devouring is more like it) this book for the last 3 days. I tell you, Richard Harris did a great job of not only pointing out unique finds but writing about them in such a way that I want to see them all !! Lots of quaint B&B and unique hotels and restaurants are listed with phone numbers. Lots of the park listings have warnings if they might be closed for "tribal member only" events with a phone number to call to double-check. This part of the book is worth the read alone.
I gave this review 4 stars and would almost drop it to 3 stars because the maps are useless - Only the MAJOR highways and almost NONE of the things written about in the book show up on any of the enclosed maps. I'm sorry but that is unforgivable - I have been sitting with a separate map that I reference while reading this book so I can locate exactly where they are talking about.
Also, the entire book has no photographs, only hand drawn images - which are nice, but because the outside cover is so beautiful, it's a shame that the "support" of this book is so lackluster when compared to the excellent, eloquent writings of Mr. Harris. It's his writing that saved this from the dreaded average 3 star rating.

The best travel guide to Europe I have seen!.......1998-06-26
When I went looking for a guide book for my European vacation I had so many choices I didn't know where to begin. So, I looked at the authors. Did I want some stuffy Ivy Leage brats telling me how to have fun? Or fun loving hippies from Berkeley. :,) The Berkeley guides have the most accurate information I have seen, laid out in a form that makes sense. They have the inside scoop on all the local haunts and pubs. I showed my guide to several friends I made there, and all of them were impressed by the little, out of the way places that were listed. Some they didn't know about. Alas, I lost my guide in Berlin and had to find my own way home. My only criticism: the lack of population sizes for cities. Knowing a cities' population gives is the best indication as to what you will find.

this book and a map is all you need.......2005-10-30
I used this book (4th edition) a few years ago on a road trip from Halifax, NS to Saint George, NB. This book and a road map were very helpful in getting around the region and getting a sense of the history and background of the area.
The book covers New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia. Each province is divided into multiple sections and each section has a map with some key towns on it. You will find lots of recommendations for shopping, lighthouses, natural parks, art galleries, historical homes, museums, restaurants, places to stay, local tours, and as the book title suggests, some off-the-beaten path places. Interspersed with this information is local history, trivia, stories, and even recipes for dishes like Rappie pie and Irish moss pudding.
On my trip, I ran out of time and I did not make it to Cape Breton. However, some of my favorite things were: Peggy's Cove (NS), The Ovens Natural Park (NS), Sackville Waterfowl Park (NB), Hopewell Rocks Park (NB), spotting a moose around dusk at Fundy National Park, and of course, visiting lots of lighthouses. The Public Gardens, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, and the waterfront area in Halifax were enjoyable too. All of these places are described in this book.
One place that was not included is the Parrsboro Rock & Mineral Shop. Parrsboro is a great place for rock and fossil hunting. When I stopped at this shop, I had the pleasure of talking with Eldon George who is a well-known fossil collector in the area. In 1984, he found what was then the world's smallest dinosaur prints. If you're interested in geology, I highly recommend that you stop by there when in Parrsboro.
Excellent Guide.......2003-08-08
We used this guide for an individual trip (not a group tour)to Nova Scotia. Don't be misled by the title--it's a great book for mainstream tourists, focusing on the history and culture and sites, giving a lot more background than your standard Frommer's guide for example. At the end of each chapter there's a very limited list of hotels and restaurants, so you'll also want one of the standards--Frommer's for example, as a complement. Also, the Nova Scotia Tourism authority has GREAT free material and maps which are yours for the asking on their website.
Book Description
From the Shasta-Cascade region south to Big Sur and Fresno, this guide steers readers to little-known, seldom-visited places in urban San Francisco as well as in the sticks. Explore the back streets in Chinatown, sip espresso with an aging poet in North Beach, visit an island that was off-limits until recently, and enjoy a meal at the last lumberjack-style cookhouse in the West.
Book Description
With discoveries such as migrating elk, ancient petroglyphs, or a working cattle ranch, Wyoming is like no other place on Earth. This guide will help travelers discover these gems as well as the world's largest jade bar, the Grand Teton Music Festival, and the ghost of Butch Cassidy.

Road Trip? Indespensible...........2003-03-14
This was an indespensible part of a recent road trip I took with my kids through Wyoming. It was a convenient source for side excursions and ways to see things off the "tourist trail". It also presents little known facts and anecdotes. I also own its companion for Texas. You cannot say you truly know a place unless you own one of these books for the State in which you live. The books open a whole new world of weekend excursions to places and things odd, quirky, historic and wonderful. I highly recommend any in this series.
Not going to the Tetons or Yellowstone?.......2000-05-26
I purchased this book along with Moon Publication's book on Wyoming. I was looking for books to tell me about the rest of Wyoming, where to go, what there is to see and where to stay. I defintiely wanted info on stuff "off the beaten path". Don't get me wrong, the Tetons and Yellowstone are breath taking, but there are plenty of books written about them. I was interested in seeing what else this big and relatively empty state has to offer. It's great to find a book that tells you about the other parts of Wyoming. This title covers the history and geology of the state but, in addition gives information about locals events. It tells about some of the smaller, less traveled places and describes some great places to stay and visit. I especially enjoyed the vivid descriptions of places and the people. I like to be away from the crowds and this book can get me there, but somehow feeling it will all be familiar when I get there. If you are looking for lesser known, lesser traveled places, if you enjoy the experience of meeting people in these places and getting a real feel for what it is like to live there this book is for you. I know I will be taking it on my next trip to Wyoming.
