not good at all for AFAST.......2007-09-07
If you are studying for the AFAST DO NOT use this book. The instrument and complex movement practice sections contain numerous grievous errors. The AFAST does not contain high level math test like this book indicates, but instead mechanical concepts. It is amazing that this book was published in this apparently unedited and misinformed state. The book the Army gave me to review 15 minutes prior to testing was way better. No one in my family will every buy a cliffs test prep book again for any reason. If someone fails the test because of this crappy book I hope they sue so it gets pulled from the shelves and other don't fall victim.
I hope yuo read these reviews before purchasing.......2007-08-28
Just like everyone else on here I am so pissed off. I will NEVER purchase another book from this publisher. I dont care if its the best book inthe world. Absolutely no excuse. They should refund everyones money and do a massive recall. This should be against the law. Im so pissed right now that all I can really think about is swear words. Thanks for absolutely &^%^%$# nothing.
Too many errors!!!.......2007-03-10
This, like any other study guide, is good to understand what will be on the test, and how to interperet information. However, the practice tests are filled with errors. One question will have a picture and the correct answer. A few questions later, the same exact picture, but a different answer. I bought it for the AFAST, and the "complex movements" section is worse. Again, good for understanding how it works, but terrible practice tests. Two same questions, two different answers...
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-02-15
In preparation for the Army AFAST test I bought this book and two other study guides - I'm so glad I got the other study guides because the CliffsTestPrep is FILLED with errors. In going through one section of a sample test there were two questions with more then one possible answer (i.e. answer A was identical to answer C), and one question with NO correct answer. These types of errors are filled throughout the book; whoever was the editor on this project did a horrible job!
Not as good as the ARCO Military Flight Aptitude Test.......2007-01-03
I got this book as a supplement to the ARCO book, to try to assist me in taking the ASTB. The Cliff book was just like all the other cliff notes I have ever bought, a brief summary, and nothing much else. I would not recommend this book to help you take the test. The ARCO had a much better bank of test questions. Its not like the test is hard, its just the CliffNotes book isnt really helpful in preperation

A must have for passing the flight exam.......1999-09-14
This book won't teach you everything you need to know to be a good pilot, but that's not it's intent. It will teach you everything you need to know to pass the flight exam! If you struggle with written, multiple choice, and fairly pointless exams, then this book is for you!
Best way to prepare for the FAA computerized exam........1998-12-10
I found the book to be very helpful in preparing for the FAA exam. It provides the most information in the least amount of space possible. Using an "outline" format, it provides the main points, followed by all the necessary details in the sub-points. I would highly recommend this book to anyone preparing to become a pilot.

Harder Than It Seems.......2004-10-04
I used this book to study for the Aviation Selection Test Battery (ASTB) for the Navy OCS program. I took the test twice and I found that the math and verbal, and the mechanical reasoning parts of the test were a lot harder than the book made it seem. The spacial apperception part was pretty much right on, and the naval and aviation terms were on one test easier, and on the other a lot more difficult. I would reccommend a different book and also picking up a pilot's manual to just get an idea about aviation, because thats what the ASTB is largely geared towards.
Not helpful at all.......2001-11-25
This books was no help at all for the Army AFAST test. Questions are answered incorrectly in the answer key (Key lists C as the correct answer to Problem X, then gives the explanation as to why B was the correct answer), the Complex Movements practice questions are completely different than those on the test, and some of the pictures in the Cyclic Orientation practice questions appear to be sequenced in the incorrect order.
If you want a good book for these tests, stick with the ARCO book.
Not quite.......2001-10-24
The book just doesn't do it for the Navy and Marine Corps Aviation Battery. Not enough examples and the Spatial Apperception section was pretty haggard.

9th Edition Tarnished By Factual Errors.......2006-02-13
Earlier editions of this book had a well deserved reputation for excellence. Kershner is a master of taking the highly technical subject of flying and distilling it into an efficient, enjoyable learning experience.
Imagine my surprise to find the ninth edition rife with errors! Examples:
- erroneous definition of Class A airspace;
- erroneous decoding of wind speed and direction in a sample TAF weather report;
- erroneous Sigmet description;
- Weather Depiction Chart doesn't match explanations in the text.
These are some of the errors that I found and I'm not yet a pilot. The skills required for actually flying an airplane haven't changed much since I purchased my much-thumbed 5th edition 20 yrs ago but airspace regulations and weather reporting have changed considerably- probably not a coincidence that the errors I found are in the newer material. A quick calculation of Kershner's age at the time of the 9th edition publication makes me wonder if he was even involved in creating the updated sections.
All the content of this book is available for free via a few different downloads off the FAA website. Thus the major reason for buying this book is to cut to the chase on the body of knowledge required to earn a private pilot license because the FAA downloads though well written, cover everything from powered parachutes to jumbo jets. At least the first two of the above errors would cause wrong responses on the private pilot written test causing me to question the value of the $40 I spent on this book though I did just notice that Amazon recently cut the price by a third.
Better for After Knowledge Test Referance.......2002-03-24
I purchased his book (an earlier version) on recommendation of my flight instructor when first starting out. If your looking strictly for study material to score high on the written test there is more information than you need. If your looking for a good referance book after the written test then purchase Rod Machado's pilot manual. I use Rod's book now after earning my private license. Whenever I pick it up it either refreshes my knowledge or I am able to learn something new with further depth. Rod's book is well complimented with illustrations and diagrams to help understand the subject matter. If you want a book to use strictly for the knowlege test they are both overkill.
Great book.......2001-08-17
Informative, articulate, and carefully edited -- a must have reference for aspiring pilots. Especially impressive is Kershner's ability to avoid the most common pitfalls of writing technical material: the text is tight, complete, succinct, and perhaps most surprisingly, a real treat to read.
Great Tool.......2000-10-19
This was a great tool for my flight instruction. Kershner has a way of explaining things that is better than the other books I was able to find. I read this on my own instead of ground school and past my written and practical - so, it worked!
excellent easy to follow guide........1999-09-27
I actually read, and used extensively, the 7th edition of this book. Mr. Kershner has a easy to read and follow style that has helped me tremendously on my way to getting certified as a private pilot. Whenever I was having diffuculty learning a particular aspect of flying I referred first to this book and got the straight and skinny on the subject. Mr. Kershner obviously has a grasp on what a student pilot goes through to understand the technical jargon and concepts of flight principals, navigation, cross country flying, flight instuments, and landing an airplane.
The illstrations are clear and concise. The photographs are very good.
I highly recommend this book to any student pilot as a supplement to ground school, or anyone interested in what it takes to learn to fly, or anyone who flys in a light plane as a passenger and wants to learn more about what's going on in the cockpit and the pilot's mind.

Great Focused Book for Private Pilot Written.......2007-07-01
I used this book along with the free online questions at Sportys when preparing for my Private Pilot written exam. This book does an excellent and very efficient job at summarizing all you need to know to answer the questions and then providing the questions/answers grouped by topic - with occasional explanation. I scored a 98 - needlessly got one question wrong. This book really helped me prep and I used ASA to sign me off for the exam.
Note - this book is not a substitute for learning and understanding all the information required to safely fly. It is efficient memorization and focus on the test questions. You really need and want to understand everything behind the questions/answers.
I just passed the checkride this past week. Again, this book helped in reviewing fro the oral portion of the exam.
Book Description
In 1969, after his return from Vietnam, George Marrett took a job as a test pilot at Hughes Aircraft. For twenty years, he tested the most sophisticated airborne radar and missiles ever designed for advanced Navy and Air Force aircraft. Marrett's masterful command of storytelling puts the reader in the cockpit during the F-15, F-16, and F-18 weapons systems flyoff, as well as during the firing of a Mach 3 Phoenix missile from an F-14A Tomcat at a Soviet MiG Foxbat target. In addition to the weaponry, Marrett relives stories of espionage, deadly crashes, and the development of the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber radar. He combines the thrill of test flying with the pathos, humor, and tragedy that is the everyday life of a test pilot, showing how the Cold War was actually won in the skies above Southern California. The background to Marrett's tale is the story of Hughes Aircraft. While Howard Hughes's huge and unwieldy Spruce Goose never made it into World War II, the Radio Department he started grew to become the electronics giant Hughes Aircraft Company. By the 1950s, Hughes Aircraft built airborne radar and missiles for all of the Air Force interceptors stationed on the East and West Coasts and along the border with Canada to defend the United States from Soviet bombers. In the years that followed, the company built airborne radar for the Navy F-14A Tomcat, the Air Force F-15A Eagle, the Navy F-18A Hornet and the B-2 stealth bomber. They also built the Navy air-to-air AIM-54 Phenix and the Air Force air-to-ground AGM-65 Maverick missiles. These advanced electronic weapons were developed and fielded during President Reagan's massive buildup of military might. Even though Hughes himself did not live to see the Berlin Wall fall in 1989, the company he built made an essential contribution to the collapse of communism.

Fun Reading About A Dangerous Business.......2006-11-03
A great story about the testing of missles and the intergration of these missiles with the fighter aircraft of the era. George Marrett's style of writing makes for easy reading. He takes a highly technical subject and puts it into interesting narration for the layman to understand and enjoy.

A 10!Inside story of 1 of world's greatest feats in aviation.......1997-10-22
For the first time, the exciting inside story of the breaking of the sound barrier as told by Chuck Yeager and his X-1 team members. World renowned stunt pilot Bob Hoover was Yeager's chase pilot that fatefull morning. It is a beautifully illustrated book with 125 photos, many from the authors private collections that have never been seen by the public or published before. It also includes a chapter on famous aviatrix and motion picture stunt pilot Pancho Barnes and her Happy Bottom Riding Club. Pancho offered a free steak to the first man to break the sound barrier (Mach One) and Yeager collected that steak on Oct. 14th 1947. Pancho's Club was the fraternity house for the test pilots, where they could share lessons learned in flying the new jets and to celebrate surviving for one more day
It is a brilliant saga of dedication to duty, team work, camaraderie, technical brilliance, unmatched flying skills and heroism. These men are true heroes and role models for todays youth.

Book Description
Author John Moore is the "cat with nine lives" of the aviation fraternity. From his early days as a Naval Aviation Cadet he had a knack for flying but seemed to be in the neighborhood of disaster. Through two Korean combat tours, Navy test operations, his years as test pilot for North American Aviation, and the space program he was associated with many near and some real catastrophes.

Black Humor Meets The Right Stuff .......2007-02-20
A great story of flying during the transition from the great piston powered aircraft of WW2 to the jet age.
Also a good reminder that the most dangerous words in aviation are often an engineer saying, " I have a great idea." For them the danger of the first flight is that they will choke on their coffee. Such was the case of one project to rid carrier aircraft of their landing gear and to have them land on a rubber "bed" . Somehow I get the feeling that the engineering team never spent any time at sea, certainly not on a dark stormy night.
While it lacks the polish and emotional content of Stranger To the Ground, it packs more of a flying punch. And the author also pulls no punches when it comes to the so called Tailhook incident for which senior naval aviators were punished for simply being at the same hotel. All in the name of political correctness.
A Good Man; A Good Read.......2007-01-18
Cdr. John Moore gives a unique insight into the life of a naval aviator of the 40's through the 60's. Certainly not an easy life but one filled with its share of challenges and danger. Pretentious in no way, John Moore tells it like it was. And there is the added insight into the life of a naval aviation test pilot. If you have ever tested a plane, or would like to, you can gain some insights from this book. After his naval aviation and test pilot career, Mr. Moore ran operations and testing for the Apollo program and later became mayor of Cocoa Beach (home of Ron Jon's Surf Shop). Not your typical man; not your typical book.
Great Stories - Great Pilot!!!.......2004-09-20
This was a great tale of a pilot coming of age in the early jet days, when engineering had more to do with airplanes, than marketing.
The author is self-effacing, doesn't take himself or his (actually quite impressive) career too seriously.
Loved it!
After the reviews, a real disappointment..........2003-03-26
A friend of mine has praised this book to the skies, so I bought a copy, expecting cover-to-cover laughs and revealations. Instead, what I got was a -very- disorganized, rambling series of partial recollections which were, despite the disclaimer in the introduction, the memoirs of a single pilot. Most of the stories failed to be funny in any way and were only moderately shocking.
Most irritating of all was Chapter Twelve, which dealt with the author's anger at the Tailhook scandal/witchhunt and which had absolutely, positively nothing at all to do with anything else in the book. The chapter didn't belong. It was a distraction. Had any editing been done on the book, it should have been deleted entirely.
There were some good parts, and the first two-thirds of the book would be quite nice with some serious re-arranging and reworking to present a coherent and orderly progression of events. The material about test-flying the Cutlass and the obscenely stupid FlexDeck program are must-reads, but the section on Apollo 1 adds nothing to the reams of material written about that tragedy, and the material on Mr. Moore's training runs hot and cold. As a minor note, the tendency to use technical terms without explaining them to the casual reader makes for difficult reading in some spots.
All in all, if I'd found this in a library first, I never would have bought it; now that I have it, I can't recommend it to others, but I won't be giving my copy away either.
Kris Overstreet
There are aviation memoirs..........2001-12-05
... and many of them have honored places in my library: Colonel Robert Scott's "God Is My Co-Pilot", Heinz Knoke's excellent and sadly unknown "I Flew for the Führer", Bob Hoover's "Forever Flying", Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger's "Lost Moon" (which is as much an autobiography of Lovell as a recounting of the Apollo 13 incident)...
... and then there's this book. If you go into "The Wrong Stuff" expecting another self-congratulatory throttle-jockey memoir (not that there's anything wrong with those :), you'll be sorely disappointed, because John Moore isn't the self-congratulatory throttle-jockey type. He seems frankly surprised that he survived his aviation career, and his tongue-in-cheek delight at being alive permeates the work. Somehow, this man managed to wind up involved in some of the wackiest projects in aviation history, and his wry reminiscences make this the funniest flyboy book in history. I'm just amazed, with his karma, that Moore didn't end up testing the Pogo Planes.
Highly, highly, highly recommended.
