4 out of 5 stars Pretty good info, Doesn't instill as much "critical thinking".......2007-08-20

I work in a world where critical thinking skills are a must, so for things like this you should have more exercises that are "at your own pace" and "figure it out yourself" type of deal.

This book is also horribly lacking the ability to check how close your Office document that YOU made to their example. It's no use if you don't know how well you did. Things can look similar, but there are probably errors here-or-there.

It's fairly comprehensive, but like I said, since you don't really use your brain much, you don't really gain the ability to do these type of things on your own.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, For Those Who Are New To Computers!.......2002-12-16

This is a great textbook! This book is very easy to follow, as it has provided step-by-step instructions on how to do each of the chapters in this book and of Office XP. It also has a chapter review section with more exercises.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Word. N.T. Wright........2007-03-26

In this volume, N.T. Wright's two anchoring themes are (1) the authority of Christian canon, i.e., as a standard measure, and (2) the imperfection of our understanding of the canon, i.e., the importance of humility in cooperating with scripture's philology in finding its intent. Knowledge of scripture is, in many instances, permanently tentative (as is scientific knowledge) and proceeds along lines that are better recognized as being iterative and partial than immediate or whole. Christian humility and 'teachability' demands as much, as do the ubiquitous exegetical disputes and the inherent subtleties and mysteries of ancient texts whose impulsion was 'beyond' its human penmen. To paraphrase this view in my own clumsy way - "stop pretending you've got it all figured out and start studying so as to be taught, instead of 'studying' to support your delusions of final insights." With apologies to Wright for my paraphrase, I heartily agree with him. It's a bit interesting that Wright chose the title that he did; by it he can only mean that "the Last Word" is the final import of scripture, not that he, or anyone else, can provide a final interpretation or exposition of the Last Word.

Wright on the relationship of Christian scripture and Christian tradition: "The challenge of living with tradition is not so much, as in official Roman Catholic understandings, that one should let tradition and scripture flow together straightforwardly into a single stream, but that tradition should be allowed to be itself; that is, the living voice of the very human church as it struggles with scripture, sometimes misunderstanding it and sometimes gloriously getting it right. That is why the challenge comes fresh to each generation. Traditions tell us where we have come from. Scripture itself is a better guide as to where we should now be going." p 119

It is true that some of Wright's work is a kind of flash-point in some scholarly circles, Christian and otherwise -- too orthodox for some, too liberal for others, not Calvinist enough for the heavy-handed determinists, not Roman enough for the 'one true church' audience, and so forth. But all of this speaks to the level-headed carefulness of his theology and biblical scholarship. If, on some point(s) you find that you disagree with Wright, I hope that you can do so with the intellectual openness and spiritual humility that characterize this author; if you are a Bible-thumping know-it-all, then you need this book more than most of us do. Thank God for N.T. Wright.

4 out of 5 stars A Concise Exposition of Anglican Theological Thinking.......2007-03-09

N. T. Wright continues to be a voice of centrist sense within the roil of contemporary Christian controversies. This clear, concise exposition of the traditional Anglican "via media" is a very useful primer, or refresher, on how Anglicans balance the threads of Scripture, Tradition, and human reason. The objective is to understand how to live out the Christian call, and how to understand timeless lessons in a rapidly changing world. I've loaned my copy to several friends across the Christian belief spectrum as a clear and fairly concise summary of how my branch of Christ's church lives in to our call.

4 out of 5 stars A good but brief treatment on the authority of scripture.......2007-01-30

Tom Wright wrote an article "How can the bible be authoritative" for Vox Evangelica in 1991. This book flushes out the themes in more detail and provides some more historial context. The title might be a bit misleading since a "new understanding" could mean recovering an older understanding. My perspective is that the title is not as alarming as it sounds. What I have always appreciated about Tom Wright is that he is able defend his orthodox christian views using rigorous academic methods. Sure, he is often critized by both sides. So the conservative christians accuse him of not being fully orthodox, while the academics accuse him of compromising his rigor due to his personal faith. Regardless of one's theology position, this book should be a worthwhile read. A more detailed treatment is contained in "NT and the people of god". It is only in my second reading that I am appreciating and starting to understand the book. So for those of you who would like more depth, I would recommend "NT and the people of god". If you are interested in the subject of the authority of scripture, you might also be interested in reading more on narrative theology and the emerging/emergent church movement.

Happy reading.

4 out of 5 stars Wright is Worth the Read!.......2007-01-24

Wright cuts through the noise in the North American biblical scholarship debate. He knocks the legs out from under "conservatives" and "liberals" and offers us a solid foundation of good hermeneutics. He explains why both "sides" are missing the mark and how we can get back on the right track. Good book!

Read Paul: In Fresh Perspective for a better glimpse into N.T. Wright's wonderful contributions and insights into New Testament scholarship.

3 out of 5 stars A Bit Thin.......2007-01-12

Having read his thoroughly naratived approach in Jesus and the Victory of God I was expecting something more substanial. Given that most reading of the scriptures is first devotional and personal the corporate/hierarchical conclusion seemed lopsided.

Book Description

Today's leaders are reinventing everything but themselves, and this is why so many attempts to revolutionize business fail. The last word on power is the key method in reinventing executives so they can take on "a mission impossible" based on a course designed and run exclusively for the past fifteen years by Tracy Goss. Do you want to do work that is worthy of your time and talent? Do you want to make your mark on your company, industry, community? Are you dissatisfied with the fact that reengineering, quality improvements, and other changes never make a lasting impact? Then you need to go beyond the techniques of improvement and learn the skills of being extraordinary. The power to be extraordinary is not one we are born with. It's not the power to fix what's wrong or improve what's right. It is a power one learns in a course that for the past fifteen years has been designed and run exclusively for top executives by consultant Tracy Goss. For the first time, Goss makes her coursework available to the general reader in The Last Word On Power. Goss's unique methodology shows how "you can put at risk the success you have achieved for the 'possibility' you can be." She positions executives to take on the future they dream about. She teaches how to behave differently so you can be free of constraints from the past. She shows how you can be at home in an environment in which you are constantly surrounded by threats, and how to transcend the ordinary so that you can make the impossible happen. Her work has resulted in important life changes and organizational reinventions throughout the world.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent book on leadership and transformation... AND..........2007-04-07

I have to say that I don't feel it gives enough credit to its source which is Werner Erhard and 'The Landmark Forum' which he created. The credit to Werner is about 5 lines in the introduction and yet the book basically is the 'guts' of The Landmark Forum with an application to business. Graduates of the Forum will be familiar with all the concepts since there's relatively little changes or adaptation of them, just an application to the business and leadership context. The book is good, very good even, although major credit should be given where major credit is due, and this is Werner's work, ideas and philosophy and not the original ideas of the author. Let me move on :) The author has applied Werner's concepts to a business context and provide lots of examples in this book from her consulting practice and experience which makes it even more valuable.

That said, I the ideas are powerful. As another reviewer stated, it will be most powerful for those who have the background of the Forum or EST who will be familiar with the tools, ideas and 'distinctions' and (hopefully) will have used them. Some people may have an issue or judgment with either of those bodies due to their experiences, biases, hearsay or opinions of either Landmark, The Forum, EST or Werner himself although that doesn't take away from the power of the tools or the work. I'd prefer to take what works and leave what doesn't. I've had 'interesting' experiences with the organisation and their staff and methods... however, that doesn't detract from the value I've received from the tools.

For those that don't have that background, there's a lot in there anyway. In my rough and ready summary, it's basically a look at how we frame up the world and are in the world and how that can be unwound so that we're not trapped by our past, habits and ways of thinking and being. Once we understand that we can step outside of that 'paradigm' as such and create the kind of powerful results in our lives that may have eluded us... or not... and that's the game. Some of the ideas include how we listen, the power of context, our winning strategy for achieving success in the world and how that limits us, and how to reinvent ourselves as leaders and create possibility. (I note here that Amazon says some people bought The Art of Possibility instead of this book - that's another exceptional book, yet very different from this one). There are exercises and reflections in this book that are powerful (although many times more powerful when you experience them as in the Forum) and the book is applied to the business context and has plenty of examples.

I highly recommend this book for people looking for new ways of thinking about business and leadership. I think that people unfamiliar with the concepts and language (which are quite unique to Landmark) may actually experience difficulty in applying them without a guide or having 'experienced' them. Nonetheless, most readers would most likely take away several powerful ideas and tools should they decide to apply and learn from them. However, the greatest benefit would come from experiencing the work directly, either.. through the author's workshop or something like the very powerful Landmark Forum... the source of this work!

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Personal Transformation Reference Book.......2004-02-21

Are you committed to, or even interested in, accommplishing something that looks impossible to achieve? Are you willing to transform yourself to make the impossible possible? If you are, this book by Tracy Goss will provide you a roadmap to reinvent yourself. The work is not easy; it's like developing mastery in any field, this one being the reinvention of yourself. The stages or practices related to your personal transformation are written in an easily-understood way, yet when used as a continuing reference, develop deeper and more valuable meaning as you go back to them time and again in your quest for mastery.

5 out of 5 stars A must read book for successful managers and executives.......2003-11-10

There are many success 101 books available today. This is not one of them. This book is written for people who have been successful and find themselves stuck at a plateau arising out of the very strategy that made them successful. The Last Word on Power is the critical next step, which invite its readers to leave the restraining safety of what has worked in order to do what has up until now been impossible.

For managers and executives living in a world where simply making attainable continuous improvements is not enough, "The Last Word on Power" is a must read. Written in powerful thought-provoking language, readers will find this book impossible to put down until finished and unforgettable thereafter.

I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Good Enough to Recommend to Clients!.......2003-09-11

Tracy Goss departs from the tired worlds of either the boring or sophmorically enthusiastic management books and gives us a book good enough to recommend to our own clients. One of my clients, a highly intelligent executive and a voracious business book reader, said "Whoa! You didn't tell me I would actually have to think to read this!" Tracy takes management consulting to unprecedented heights and gives those of us who pay sharp attention to the human factor as it relates to business success a book worthy of our profession.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for those who want to do the impossible.......2003-08-14

I found this a fairly easy book to read and yet it had a significant impact on how I see myself and my approach to my work. And each time I read the book I get more out of it, there's another layer of the onion to peel back. This is not just for those who want to do the impossible, it's for anyone who wants to see the mechanisms that control their life - and with seeing comes power!

Richard John Neuhaus chose a daunting project in Death on a Friday Afternoon: the book is a wide-ranging meditation on Jesus' seven last words spoken from the Cross on Good Friday. (These "words" are actually Jesus' seven final statements, taken from the four gospels; they include "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do," and "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?") Neuhaus has a powerful rhetorical style, which disposes him occasionally to make questionable, grandiose claims, such as, "If what Christians say about Good Friday is true, then it is, quite simply, the truth about everything." Yet Neuhaus also has a great respect for the mysteries of Christianity and is capable of open, honest grappling with the toughest questions of the faith: "[W]hat does it mean to say Christ died for our sins? Why was it necessary? Or was it? And which sins in particular?" Despite its occasional overreaching, Death on a Friday Afternoon is an elegant, mature, and compassionate exploration of the hardest, darkest questions in Christianity. --Michael Joseph Gross

Book Description

In the tradition of C. S. Lewis and Thomas Merton, this profoundly moving and enlightening journey through the meanings of Good Friday is destined to become a classic. Numerous writers and composers have been captivated by the suggestiveness of Jesus' Seven Last Words. But Richard John Neuhaus's sustained exploration of these utterances is something altogether different. Through them he plumbs the depths of human experience and sets forth the central narrative of Western civilization-the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ-in a way that engages the attention of believers, unbelievers, and those who are not sure what they believe. Death on a Friday Afternoon is an invitation to the reader into a spiritual and intellectual exploration of the dark side of human experience with the promise of light and life on the far side of darkness.

5 out of 5 stars Lenten Meditation.......2006-08-28

I bought this book as a guided meditation during Lent one year, but I have kept coming back to it year after year. Fr. Neuhaus knows how to cut to the heart of the matter and really make us think about our lives. Ever since high school, I've had a practice of "giving up something" for Lent. However, recently I've found that "adding something", especially something as powerful as the meditations in this book, help me to prepare much better for the Easter celebration.

Of course, you don't have to wait until Lent to be moved by the power of Fr. Neuhaus's message. I recommend this book at any time during the year.

5 out of 5 stars A profound meditation.......2006-04-01

My first encounter with Fr. Neuhaus's writing came through the pages of "First Things", a magazine on the role of religion in public life. His penetrating insights and carefully crafted arguments are true gems of wisdom. I've come to appreciate them and depend on his daily reflections on current issues the way some people depend on a shot of caffeine to get them through a day.

This book, however, is written in a completely different style and with a very different aim. Here we see a more spiritual and meditative side of Fr. Neuhaus, and I, for one, am grateful for this insight. Here he contemplates the seven last words of Christ, devoting a chapter to each one of them. His aim is to takes us deeper into the mystery of crucifixion and the death of Christ, and to resist the temptation to just rush over to Easter. The book can be used as a devotional aid, and would be a good companion reading material during Lent.

The meditative nature of the book does not prevent Fr. Neuhaus from making and defending some theologically strong positions. The greatest, and for non-Christians probably the most controversial, claim is that "[i]f what Christians say about Good Friday is true, then it is, quite simply, the truth about everything." The purpose of this statements is not necessarily to argue a theological position, but to bring urgency and highlight the importance of what happened on that Friday afternoon. In reading this book we can make one big step closer to that goal.

5 out of 5 stars "Saving Private Ryan" and the crucifixion.......2006-03-17

This is one of the most profoundly moving books I have ever read. I re-read it every year during lent, and it never fails to move me in the same was as before. Here is why.

In the final scene of "Saving Private Ryan," Ryan himself, now much older, is visiting the grave of the soldier who saved him. He recalls the final words of the dying soldier who rescued him, a plea to make his life worthy of the sacrifice being given. In tears, he asks his wife whether he has in fact lived his life in a way that justifies that sacrifice.

Although "Death on a Friday Afternoon" is far too complex and nuanced to be summarized succinctly, one of its objectives (which it fulfills admirably) is to look its reader directly in the face and ask, "Are you in fact living your life in a way that justifies the sacrifice that Jesus made to save it?"

Two brief excerpts provide a glimpse of this book's seriousness and importance:

"Our lives are measured not by the lives of others, not by our own ideals, not by what we think might reasonably be expected of us, although by each of those measures we acknowledge failings enough. Our lives are measured by who we are created and called to be, and the measuring is done by the One who creates and calls. . ."

"To belittle our sins is to belittle ourselves, to belittle who it is that God creates and calls us to be."

This book is a call to seriousness about living our lives in response to what God has done for us.

There is much more as well. Don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars don't skip right to Easter and forget Good Friday.......2003-09-12

This is a wonderful book, written with patience, love, and care--written, at times, prayerfully and poetically. In contemplating our Christian faith, Neuhaus urges us not to skip Good Friday and go right to Easter and the joy of the Resurrection (though it IS joyful). Rather, we must reflect on the Crucifixion, on His death, without which there could have been no Resurrection and without which there would be no redemption. Some outsiders and even many Christians find the Crucifixion morbid and shy away from pondering it, but it is meant to shock and disturb. (This was not lost on Dostoevsky, who has some excellent passages and descriptions of the crucified Christ in The Idiot.) It was a death and murder, one in which we all are complicit. We must understand this before we can hope to understand the meaning of His death.

Neuhaus uses the seven last "words" (utterances, really) of Christ to explore the nature of His life and death, as well as the nature of our own lives and deaths. Tangentially, he comments on our culture and society, on permissivity and the like--ideas that will be familiar to readers of First Things. But this is primarily a book on religion, not politics. Nor is it an exposition of theology. Neuhaus avoids the often complicated and difficult-to-understand theological matters (and debates) that surround Christ's life, death, and resurrection, as well as the implications for us. Certainly, Neuhaus adheres to his--which is to say, the Catholic Church's--interpretation, but here he seeks to get to the foundations of Christianity. The result is something all Christians--and, indeed, anyone desiring to understand the faith--can enjoy and appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars Quite simply, the truth about everything........2002-06-17

The Seven Last Words are not seven "words" but seven "utterances" and they are these:
"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."
"Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise."
"Woman, behold your son. Son, behold your mother."
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
"I thirst."
"It is finished."
"Father, into your hands I commend my spirit."

These are the seven biblically recorded utterances of Christ on the cross, and Neuhaus has written, in my opinion, the superlative meditation of the significance of these final words of Jesus. Each chapter expounds upon one of these "words". The writing is so clear-headed... it will appeal to those who need to approach the ineffable mystery with at least one foot on the ground. Or even two! It is not spiritual platitude, it is gut-level and sobering. Have you ever wondered what happened when Jesus died on the cross? Or WHY it happened? Or IF it happened? This book speaks to those questions, with a rational approach that can only be likened to the writings of C.S. Lewis.
I was transfixed, and overwhelmed (in a good way) with the wealth of information in Neuhaus's book. Beautifully written.
He says in the preface, "If what Christians say about Good Friday is true, then it is, quite simply, the truth about everything. I have written this for people who are convinced of that truth, for people who are open to thinking about whether it may be true and for people who are just curious about why so much of the world thinks Good Friday is the key to understanding what Dante called 'the love that moves the sun and all the other stars.'"
The Convinced. The Cautious. The Curious. If you are any of these three types, this book will not disappoint you.
"We must not turn away from what we have done to God, lest we be found to have turned away from what He has done for us." (p.257).

Book Description

For all those seeking more authentic ways to hold and practice Christian faith, Brian McLaren has been an inspiring, compassionate—and provocative—voice. Starting with the award-winning A New Kind of Christian, McLaren offered a lively, wide-ranging fictional conversation between Pastor Dan Poole and his friend Neil Oliver as they reflected about faith, doubt, reason, mission, leadership, and spiritual practice in the emerging postmodern world. That conversation widened to include several intriguing new characters in the sequel, The Story We Find Ourselves In, as Dan and friends continued to explore faith-stretching themes from evolution to evangelism, from death to the meaning of life. Now, in this third installment of their adventures, Dan and his widening circle of friends grapple with conventional Christian teachings about hell and judgment and what they mean for our relationship with God and each other. Is there an alternative to the usual polar views of a just God short on mercy or a merciful God short on justice?  Could our conflicted views of hell be symptoms of a deeper set of problems – misunderstandings about what God’s justice and mercy are about, misconceptions about God’s purpose in creating the world, deep misgivings about what kind of character God is and what the Christian gospel is for?

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars How to follow Jesus and not worry about Hell.......2007-07-23

In my opinion, not quite as interestingly written as his second book in the series, this final book in the trilogy by McLaren does try to answer some of the most serious questions plaguing Christians in the post-modern age. The biggest question, "how can a good God let people burn forever in Hell", is parried and for me convincingly dealt with. McLaren thinks that preoccupation with a formula to keep ourselves and friends out of Hell (and to Hell with the heathen) detracts us from loving God and loving our neighbor, and from trying to make the world better, and therefore basically ignores the teachings of Jesus (the last word by the way is LOVE). McLaren falls back on C.S. Lewis in The Great Divorce to speculate on what "Hell" might really be like - and that is good enough for me. The story of a Church crisis and recovery with reconciliations is timely and heart warming, as is the happy double wedding ending - however, it left me with still a lot of unanswered questions - I suppose as intended.

5 out of 5 stars Turn from burn.......2007-06-09

Talking about a discovery! I was already going up into the first two books of the trilogy, but this one strikes all! 2000 years of Christianity influences by one of the hottest subject of religion, Hell. Suddenly you're walking along with pastor Dan and Neo to discover the revealing truth about the Gates of Hell. You might wanna leave this book for what it is if you're all too sure about what you believe, but this book gives you something to think about. If this doesn't grab you... The gospel is getting better and better.

5 out of 5 stars Easy read, on a touchy, complicated subject........2007-04-03

If you have always wondered, "is hell real or not?", or are just curious to what different ways there are of looking at the concept of Hell, Brian McLaren does an excellent job of taking the facts and inserting them into a novel. A novel that is enjoyable and also easy to read.

You may not come away with all the answers, but you will come away with all the questions, lots of answers, and direction on where you can find more answers.

Whatever you do, don't only read the book half-way through just because your feeling your ego hurt and think the author is a heretic. Give the book a chance. Read it in the spirit it is being presented to you. And if you still have unanswered questions when done, then do some homework as the characters in the book did.

Definitely a book I am going to share with anyone struggling with the concept of Hell.

3 out of 5 stars Well Written & Wrong.......2007-01-06

If you are already convinced that Orthodox Christianity has been fundamentally flawed in its conception of God's justice, in the existence of Hell, in the manner in which Scripture is to be read and interpreted, and the purposes of God in Creation, then this book will affirm your convictions and make you feel warm and fuzzy all over.

If you are grappling with the issues of life and wonder how this notion of God fits in a world which seems to explain everything without regard to a vital spirituality. Then in this book you will find all the right questions being asked and done so in a highly readible, winsome manner. Be Aware! The right questions are asked but the wrong answers provided. (Yep, I believe in certainty & that certainty of doctrine is a good thing!)

If you are seeking insights into how Conservative Evangelical Christians handle these questions and how they have discovered the Scriptural warrant for their answers, then all you will find in this book is a straw man caricature that reduces the highly nuanced, warmly compassionate views of Reformed Theology down to a power monging, insecure soul who just cannot rise to the challenge of critical thinking.

There is no doubt of McLaren's courage nor his willingness to address tough questions. The essential problem is his post-modern convictions about truth. To McLaren, anything that is repugnant to his own sensibilities must be wrong. He, at heart, must be the final judge of what is true (for himself, I am sure he would say, even if not for anyone else). Therefore, if the Scriptures proclaim something which he finds repugnant to his own sensibilities, i.e. God inflicting an eternity of conscious torment on people that McLaren considers "good", then the Scriptures must be interpreted in some way that is more in line with his own thinking. "God is much better than we have ever thought" is his version of the Gospel and on the bare face of it, that idea has much to commend it. But the idea that God is "much better", or "too good" to countenance the idea of Hell comes down to recasting God in McLaren's image, something which I would think God finds highly offensive.

McLaren seeks to elevate our thinking about God. That is good. What is not good is that he is more than willing to read back into Scripture every post-modern literary technique which he has adopted and to presume that Jesus dealt with issues the way that he, McLaren, would deal with them.

If you are asking the questions that McLaren asks, then "you go, girl!" Keep at it. Do not allow yourself to stop with the answers he provides. There are answers "after that."

5 out of 5 stars Hopefully Not McLaren's Last Word!.......2006-11-10

Absolutely loved this book! It is possibly my favorite of McLaren's books from the New Kind of Christian series. He tackles the subject of the hereafter with amazing finesse. I thought the book was thoughtful, kind and challenging while looking into the subject of hell. His chapter regarding the Holocaust Museum was incredibly moving and personal.
The characters vary some from book to book, but the main ones are recognizable, and new ones keep the focus fresh. It is possible to jump right in on this third book without previously reading his first two.
However, I found it helpful to have some background from reading them in order. McLaren always leaves me hungry for more.

Book Description

WINNER OF THE 2004 NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD FOR ANTHOLOGIES!

Being Jewish. What does it mean—today—and for the future? Listen in as Jews of all backgrounds reflect, argue, and imagine.

When Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was brutally murdered in Pakistan, many Jews were particularly touched by his last words affirming his Jewish identity. Many were moved to reflect on or analyze their feelings toward their lives as Jews.

The saying "two Jews, three opinions" well reflects the Jewish community's broad range of views on any topic. I Am Jewish captures this richness of interpretation and inspires Jewish people of all backgrounds to reflect upon and take pride in their identity. Contributions, ranging from major essays to a paragraph or a sentence, come from adults as well as young people in the form of personal feelings, statements of theology, life stories, and historical reflections. Despite the diversity, common denominators shine through clearly and distinctly.

This inspiring collection presents answers from Jewish people around the world—artists, entertainers, government leaders, authors, media personalities, scientists, community organizers, scholars, rabbis, and others—covering the religious, professional, and political spectrum. They explore:

• Identity—Our relationship to ourselves, how we define who we are in the most fundamental way.
• Heritage—Our relationship to family, community, culture, tradition, and our collective history.
• Covenant, Chosenness, and Faith—Our relationship to God, our understanding of the relationship between God and the Jewish people, and our understanding of Judaism as a religion.
• Humanity and Ethnicity—Our relationship to others who are not part of the Jewish people. How does a sense of particularism relate to the universal themes and teachings of Judaism?
• Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World) and Justice—Our relationship to the larger world, and what "I am Jewish" means for what we do with our lives as we address our responsibilities in the world.

In this critical time in our history, I Am Jewish will motivate people throughout the Jewish community to think about their lives as Jews, and have a profound effect on the way younger Jews shape their identity in years to come. It will help people of all faiths and backgrounds to better understand Jewish people and Judaism.

5 out of 5 stars I am Jewish.......2007-03-15

I am not Jewish but have a lot of friends who are and wanted to understand them better. Loved the book.

5 out of 5 stars We Are All Jewish.......2005-07-15

This book is:

1. A continuous meditation on the mantra "I am Jewish". Like a niggun.

My father is Jewish
My mother is Jewish
I am Jewish

These, Pearl's last words, could be a prayer from a Siddur I haven't yet seen. If they aren't, they really should be. Closest one would be "Thank you for making me a Jew."

2. My bed time story. Each night before I go to sleep, I read about another Jew -- some are famous and some are not -- then fantasize about what my chapter might say.

Note to self: Visit Reform shul in Scarsdale to witness davening lead by first-ever Korean American Rabbi/Chazzan, daughter of Korean Buddhist mother and American Jewish father.

5 out of 5 stars Being Jewish means much in many different ways .......2004-10-11

It is difficult to write a few lines about this book without thinking about the cruel and evil event that led to it. The murder of Daniel Pearl simply because he was Jewish would seem to take us back into the darkest times of Jewish and human history, to the Nazi era. And in truth the new Islamic Fundamentalism in whose name Pearl was murdered is a frightening and abhorrent phenomenom which is a threat to human civilization and freedom as a whole.
Pearl's last words ' My father is a Jew. My mother is a Jew . I am a Jew' are as I understand it a courageous affirmation of his own identity and connection with his people. It connects with generations of Jewish martyrs who died on ' Kiddush Hashem' crying out as their last words the Jewish declaration of faith in G-d, " Shema Yisrael"
The book itself consists in around one- hundred and fifty personal statements by largely well- known Jews about what being Jewish means to them. The selection to my taste is a little slanted to the ' left and to the Diaspora' and should in my opinion have had more Israelis, and more with a strong religious identity. There are a few who I would not have included. But on the whole the selection is varied, interesting and provides a great deal of meaningful thought. I especially was touched by the words of Kerri Strug the courageous Olympic gymnast but there are many other inspiring accounts also.
This is an important book for anyone who wishes to see the collective face of the Jewish people at this time.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book.......2004-10-03

I recently purchased this book and was truly touched by it. I have to admit that I am saddened that some believe that this is too "narrow" because it focuses on what being Jewish means to Jews. Of course this book is not simply for Jews; in fact, I would love for my non-Jewish brothers and sisters to read it to understand what being Jewish means to us. What if it were a book about another community? Can no one write about their own community?

The first part of international understanding is understanding oneself and this book does a great job at this.

5 out of 5 stars Stirring tribute to Daniel Pearl.......2004-05-18

In the wake of tragedy, many survivors, in the face of their immense pain and suffering, are admirably capable of enriching and inspiring the lives of others by means of their particular response. In this unique work, the parents of Daniel Pearl (may G-d avenge his blood) utilize his words uttered only moments before his death, "I am Jewish," to enable others to reflect on their own Jewishness through presenting the "personal reflections" of over 140 extremely diverse Jews on the subject. From rabbis to actors to politicians to journalists to philosphers to authors and more, we learn of what it means to be Jewish. From younger people to the religious to the secular to the famous to the non-famous, we further grapple with the implications of our own Jewishness to our everyday lives. The essays are divided into five categories: 1. Identity 2. Heritage 3. Covenant, Chosenness, and Faith 4. Humanity and Ethnicity 5. Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World) and Justice. To my delight, the thoughts of Dennis Prager, one of my favorite thinkers and writers, are included. To conclude, let me share with you one of my favorite essays in the book, authored by the comic, actress, and writer, Sarah Silverman: "Remember the guy who smashed all the idols in the idol store? His mother had a heart attack when she saw the mess, but I'm sure she bragged about it later. That's us. That's me. I am Jewish."

5 out of 5 stars A Contemporary and Meaningful Look At The Seven Last Words.......2007-04-27

The Seven Last Words of Jesus on the cross have inspired a variety of religious devotions over the years. In many churches, people gather between noon and three in the afternoon on Good Friday afternoon and hear reflections based on these poignant and powerful words of Jesus. Methodist Bishop William Willamon offers seven contemporary reflections and a concluding afterward on the final phrases Jesus uttered while crucified in his book THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY.

While the title may be somewhat whimsical, this is not a feel good kind of spiritual book. Willamon's reflections are solid works that encourage people to encounter Jesus Christ as he dies on the cross. For Willamon, Jesus' suffering is real and his suffering is still meaningful for modern people, even though the current trend for many is to see themselves as more spiritual than human which can lead to almost denying the physical sufferings of Jesus. Though never graphic, Willamon is not afraid to confront the hard realities of Jesus' final moments in his ministry and believes we need to understand that Jesus' death is central to his life and the way he entered into his crucifixion says so much about him. Willamon does not focus as much on biblical scholarship or theological concepts as he does personal experience. The reflections are full of wonderful examples of how the words can be applied to our own day and age.

The most appropriate time to use the reflections would be Lent and Holy Week, though one could argue that Willamon's reflections have something to offer at anytime of the year. While at times stark, Willamon's reflections are always hope filled and remind us of the reality of Jesus' love for us and have a way of helping us remember the full extent of Jesus' sacrifice for us and his ministry.

5 out of 5 stars Divine chocolate desserts.......2007-01-29

This is an excellent book. I particularly like it as it has photos of every dessert so you can be inspired by the photos and at least you can see what the finished product looks like. The desserts are a little time consuming but you can probably tackle them over a couple of days. I have made a few of the desserts and I can only rave about them.

5 out of 5 stars The best collection in a single book!.......2006-05-28

I've bought this book probably less than a year ago but I already tried several recipes. I have quite a few books for chocolate cakes recipes, but this is the best for sure. And mainly due to this book, my chocolate cakes have been improving a lot. They take time and are relatively expensive but it worth, especially when you see how people enjoy each bite.
Every party with friends it's always a surprise for them, since I try as many new recipes as I can.
Thanks Mr. Desaulnier for sharing such a great talent!

5 out of 5 stars This is a keeper!.......2006-03-04

I have had this book for ten years. I have yet to see any chocolate-guised cookbook that compares.

I have not dared to make most of the delights in this book (how DOES he stay so skinny?) but have made many. Not being a trained chef of any sort, the instructions are clear, professional and consise. The hardest parts of creating these confections are not getting the book dirty, and deciding which one to make next.

While some reviews have talked about some recipes being "complicated," only the excitement of finally tasting them should be intimidating. It is very rewarding to treat yourself to these deserts after the labor of making them, knowing they are the same things you could enjoy in the world's finest resturants.

Chocolate is center on stage in all these recipies, and this book has increased my reverence for it 100-fold. (And also spoiled me away from sub-par chocolate deserts.)

4 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2005-10-03

This book is beautiful to look at in addition to having incredible recipes. Some of them are a bit complicated, but for the most part, worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars What a way to go!.......2005-07-25

Death by Chocolate is the book of books if you are serious about your chocolate. This book is sublime in its luscious photos...one can almost taste them! Where Desaulniers shines most is in his pragmatic, practical approach to cooking with chocolate is that he uses ingredients and supplies the normal, average Joe can get his hands on...nothing exotic or too difficult.

There is a recipe for every taste and culinary skill-level. Some are challenging, some are average, some are just fun. Whoever would have thought of chocolate popcorn!

If you want to treat or impress anyone, the recipes in this book will do it. Every recipe I've made are met with rave reviews...quickly followed by "can I have the recipe."

Desaulniers' tips, teaching, and advice are a great addition. They are valuable and comforting especially when first attempting to create a delicious chocolate concoction. I have not been disappointed in one recipe I've tried...and, they've all worked. His instructions are easy, clear, and right on.

My only critique is that he includes recipes for white chocolate...pu! As a purist (and owing to the fact white chocolate contains no chocolate), these should be put in the trash or another appropriate receptacle.

If you are or know a serious chocolate hound, this is a great book to give as a gift. I've purchased both editions. Finally, if you only have one cookbook on chocolate this one is it, hands down.

5 out of 5 stars Simple to Understand.......2006-05-16

I've read other books on the beatitudes, but through Sheen's comparison to how Jesus lived the beatitudes on the cross, I really came to understand them much more deeply. This is a quick read and will help anyone grow spiritually and understand how to apply the Beatitudes to his or her life.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-08-15

This book will make you a better person. Archbishop Sheen brings the Beatitudes to life through the incredible and selfless final acts of Jesus.

4 out of 5 stars Good spiritual reading.......2002-05-21

Archbishop Sheen's short series of meditations on the Seven Last Words and the Seven Beatitudes is a good read for anyone who wishes to meditate further on Our Lord's Passion. Though he claims there is no connection between the two subjects other than his artificial construction, I believe that he saw a real connection that exists between the two. Some of his written information is contextual (such as the "mailed fist of Communism"), but when one spends time in contemplation, one will realize that his information is not as dated as it seems. A good read any time of the year, but recommended especially for Holy Week.

5 out of 5 stars Great Spirituality book.......2002-02-02

This helps me to become a better Christian. The dedication is even timeless: "To Mary, who through the Cross, leads us to the Beatitudes."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Diagnosis Murder - The Last Word.......2007-09-08

This book is very interesting and keeps my attention. I loved the series when it was on TV and equally enjoy reading all of the books, this one included!

4 out of 5 stars Closing Chapter.......2007-06-11

As Goldberg has stated, The Last Word is his last Diagnosis Murder novel. At least for a while.

As the end of a trilogy, the events in The Dead Letter and The Double Life have culminated to a final showdown between Dr. Mark Sloan and a serial killer that he previously sent to prison. Through a meticulous conspiracy, Dr. Jesse Travis and his wife Susan are framed for infecting patients with the West Nile virus. Even Dr. Amanda Bentley and Mark's son, Detective Steve Sloan, find themselves framed for crimes they didn't commit. And Mark finds himself completely alone and feeling more helpless than he has ever been in his life. If he's to outwit the devious killer, Mark must change his way of thinking.

This last book in the series is much different from the rest. It's more than a simple whodunit. Mark knows who's behind the conspiracy and why. But he must discover who else is involved and gather enough evidence to free his son and friends. Mark's character goes through a lot of changes, especially in his desperation.

Goldberg offers a closing chapter for fans in this exciting story that culminates in a surprising finish.

5 out of 5 stars Diagnosis Murder Book Number 8 .......2007-05-26

The Last Word truly did give Dr. Mark Sloan a chance to have the last word. It is a must read if you are a Diagnosis Murder fan.

4 out of 5 stars Can't go backwards.......2007-05-23

You can read this book without reading the first 7, but you don't want to read the other 7 after this one since so much is revealed in the story. I'd read the first 7 awhile ago, however, so a few of the references were lost on me - it didn't make the book any less interesting or intriguing.

I hope the title is not a signal that no more will be coming in this wonderful series of books.

1 out of 5 stars unbelievable.......2007-05-12

If it wasn't for Dick Van Dyke's photo on the cover, I'd have sworn I was reading bad fan fiction. 'The Last Word' lives up, or should I say down, to its name by completely destroying the lives and careers of the characters. I particularly hate the characters being subjected to the state-sponsored kidnapping also known as wrongful arrest and imprisonment; without the slightest hint of any form of redress at the end. For me this book caused tears and a nightmare. This series could have ended in style with *satisfactory* resolutions; including other, positive reasons for Mark and Steve to decide it was time to quit medicine and solving murders, respectively. And by the way, destroying the characters means that the baddies win after all. What kind of a message is that to send?
