Noam Chomsky is considered the father of modern linguistics. Connect the dots?.......2007-09-13
This material is not easy to digest in two ways. First, there are so many facts and figures that after a while your head begins to spin. I listened to it twice in succession just for that reason. Secondly, it's difficult to believe that your country's political leaders could possibly be saying one thing and doing another. Aren't we, the US, always the "good guys"? Don't we always do things the right way, "the American way"? Maybe that is a problem. Perhaps other nations want to do things their own way.
If you wonder why so much of the world dislikes or even hates the US, then this book will offer bountiful explanations, dating back to probably the Monroe Doctrine in the first part of the nineteenth century. Whether or not you agree with Mr. Chomsky's conclusions is up to you, but to refute him you will have a lot of offered facts to overcome.
Previous reviewers have labeled him a communist, or at the least, a communist sympathizer. I didn't get that impression. He just doesn't like American interventionist foreign policy which supposedly is leading to a New World Order, with the US the undisputed leader. And a lot of other people in the world think the same way and don't like it either.
If even a small portion of what he writes is true, it's a sad situation in my eyes. But if you consider the facts and connect the dots...where does it lead? Make up your own mind.

Other reviews have covered, at length, the perceived pros and cons of Chomsky's critique of American foreign policy in general and of the war in Iraq in particular, and I will reveal from the outset that my conclusions on these topics are simliar to Chomsky's in many respects. The incredible value of this book, however, is that seeks to address the question of human survival within the context of American foreign policy.
Although Chomsky does not delve deeply into the topic of the pending petroleum crisis, it, as well as other questions regarding the future of industrial civilization, is never too far beneath the surface. According to geologists of the Hubbard school, the world has reached or will soon reach a point of peak oil production after which the ability of global production to meet demand will inevitably decline, leading to a global crisis of unprecedented proportions. To the extent that U.S. policy continues along the lines of exerting hegemonic control over what is left as opposed to engaging in principled and collective effort towards creating a more equitable post-petroleum global economy, it certainly does lead us towards destruction or at the very least, a nightmarish Hobbesian existence in which human lives will indeed be "nasty, brutish and short".
One may choose to agree or disagree with many of Chomsky's arguments. However, for any thinking person who is conversant with history and who has an interest in social justice for all and not just for some, Chomsky drives home a number of points that are practically unassailable:
1. U.S. foreign policy, like the policies of great powers before it, have rarely been predicated on the publicly espoused principles of democracy, equality and freedom, but in the pursuit of its elite's interests, often to the detriment of the environment, democracy itself, and of the well-being of working and oppressed people around the world as well as within the United States. The unprecedented ability of modern man to destroy not only each other, but the very environment that makes sustainable existence on Earth possible however, dictates that unlike any empire or imperial age before it, the consequences of American policy are truly global in scope, and they may prove to be beyond any conceivable ability of repair.
2. The phenomenon of "globalizaton", in practice, has benefited, for the most part, only the financial elites and the military and technocratic elements whose services are necessary to maintain the system. For the rest of humanity, globalization has come to mean a nightmare of economic and cultural disruption and dislocation on a global scale. It is interesting to note that with the advent of globalization, the gap between the rich and poor has increased significantly, not only on a global scale but within the individual economies of the wealthiest nations as well. Lenin's "aristocracy of labor" is shrinking as we speak!
3. Despite the fact that the U.S. can justifiably be seen as the world's only military superpower, its attempts to exert unilateral control over the dwindling energy resources of the Middle East (and by extension of the rest of the world) will increasingly lead it into escalating conflict with other nations and peoples, resulting not only in its own moral, political and economic bankruptcy, but potentially in the destruction of civilization as we know it.
4. Only by understanding the nature of the current situation and organizing to change course can Americans and other people around the world prevent this continuing descent into madness.
Regardless of one's ideological inclination, "Hegemony or Survival" should provoke readers to serious thought on these matters, and for that Professor Chomsky should be thanked and applauded.

The writing has Chomsky's typical laser-like clarity. The facts are abundant and irrefutable. The arguments are powerful and inescapable. A refreshing break from all the propaganda and indoctrination that cover the landscape.

I hated how the book made me feel but it gets 5 stars for its brutal edification - as I'm sure was his intent.
Whatever your politics are, and regardless of whether you dislike or disbelieve Chomsky's conclusions, the facts laid out in this book speak disturbingly for themselves. Our government consistently pays lip service to supporting and promoting democracy but apparently has a nasty track record to the contrary. I would sincerely rather that not be true but there it is in the historical record. As stated by another reviewer, his facts are correct.
I could only read this book a little at a time. I would get too angry and have to set it aside for a few days until I could handle some more ugly truth.
I always thought Bush's statement that the terrorists "hate us because of our freedoms" did not quite ring true. In light of our government's actions reported in this book, the statement becomes absurdly transparent misinformation.
At least now we know the REAL reasons why they hate us.

This is a book of closure-- for both the Yukon and Alaskan quest books.
While certainly not the best book in the 2 series, it is a must as it is the conclusion to both.
It rushed to wrap up storylines in order to move onto new ones which is the biggest flaw. Tracie is not afraid of using tragedy and sadness to build faith. It is, as usaul, well-written and full of excitement. Despite its downfalls it is still a good book. Just not EXCELLENT.

"Poorly paced; forced plot; tragedy after apparent tragedy; lots of 'huh?'s; shallow. Finally over!" That's what I wrote in my personal book journal. Somehow I made it through the whole series--skimming at times because I was so bored--but it never succeeded in reeling me in. Characters and relationships had the potential to be memorable and endearing but were insufficiently developed. I felt cheated as I would love to have gotten to know some of these people! The pace of the story was uneven--lurching into unbelievable places then dragging as characters dealt with what had happened. Disappointing from such a popular novelist. Two stars instead of one because, despite the story, I was at least given a glimpse of what life was like in early 1900's Alaska.

While Jacob Barringer and Jayce Kincaid are struggling for survival along with fellow crew members after their ship the Regina was stuck in Arctic ice floes, Leah Kincaid and Helaina Beecham are home in Last Chance Creek praying for their safe return.
Not always friends, Leah and Helaina had a tumultuous past. As a former Pinkerton Agent, Helaina has finally come to embrace the Lord, redefined who she is, and what has become really important in her life. Most of all, she's realized her love for Jacob Barringer and hopes that `when' he returns, for she will not believe otherwise, he will still love her and want her in his life. Leah naturally wants her husband home but finds her faith in God being tested after having to overcome many trials that have been put in her path. The journey has been long and hard, but through it all faith in God's graces will prevail.
People living in the Alaskan wilderness not only had to have strength of body and fortitude, but a devout strength in a belief of a higher power and this is brought home in spades in this final book in the Alaskan Quest series. Ms. Peterson has a rare gift for storytelling and this entire series (see SUMMER OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN and UNDER THE NORTHERN LIGHTS) is a testimony to her well written and well researched stories as she gifts readers with an unforgettable historical inspirational tale featuring tremendous and brilliant characterizations with great historical background. This story packs an enormous emotional punch as you follow these wonderfully endearing characters from Last Chance Creek to Ship Creek (aka Anchorage) as they make their way in a challenging world. The story is bound to overwhelm you as you experience the trials and tribulations these people experience in their struggle to live in the glorious yet unforgiving Alaskan territory. Like me, you'll most likely cry both tears of joy for the gifts of life, and sob for the loss of loved ones, but through it all, you will be buoyed up by faith in the Lord and welcome the gift of storytelling from this amazing author.
While this third and final inspirational adventure could and does easily stand alone, I suggest it would be even more gratifying to start at the beginning and experience the thrill of this most impressive and absolutely superb inspirational series.

Haunting journey into my own mirror.......2007-01-05
As I read this book, I could not stop turning the pages. I read the first 120 pages without getting up. I already knew the end of the story, but I had to read the remarkable journey. This lady opened herself up for such an honest portrayal of the most hideous events of her life to share them publicly and it is truly amazing. Know this, Patty, and Bill for writing it, if for nothing else, I am a life that was touched.
My mirror holds much the same story, and the same deals are offered to me. Everything within me says "stand by the truth" - but the truth is so hard when it hurts you. You have given me renewed courage to fight the fight. I will not give in and I will continue to tell the truth. The system has got acknowledge when it's wrong. Thank you both so much.
A Horror Story.......2006-10-20
I sat in stunned silence as I turned the final page of "Cry Rape," Bill Lueders' heart-rending story of a rape victim doubted, and ultimately tormented, by police. My 10-year-old son asked about what I had been reading, saying, "Is it a mystery?"
I replied, "No, it's about a lady who was hurt badly in a crime and told the police. Not only did the police refuse to find the person who hurt her, they accused her of lying. Eventually they found the criminal who hurt her but even then, the police didn't help her."
His response: "Oh, so it's a horror story."
It is the most fitting summary I've yet seen of this tremendous book. Lueders' story unfolds chronologically from the first page, which begins with the shock and terror of a brutal rape. It leads to eventual vindication, but not without further terror and further brutality -- at the hands of police, attorneys and others the victim trusted most.
This book must be read not for how it is written though Lueders' dramatic-documentary style makes the story impossible to forget. It must be read because it shows us how our most vulnerable citizens can be further victimized by the very systems designed to help them. In short, it is a morality tale that highlights the immorality of the institutions many of us trust.
The Madison Idea.......2006-09-20
Cry Rape is the story of a rape victim's victimization by the criminal justice system. It is a story about a cop who seems predisposed to "prove" rape victims liars, about a police department that protects bad cops, about a district attorney's office willing to further victimize the victim to protect bad cops, about judges willing to interpret the law in ways that protect bad cops and bad policies, about elected and appointed officials who stand behind the victimization, and (though only peripherally) newspaper editors who don't seem to care.
It is also the story of one woman's heroic and uphill fight against the system and the small group of people who believed and supported her and were sometimes victimized as a result.
Conversations in Cry Rape, suggest that the majority of rape victims choose to walk away and admit defeat rather than standing up to a criminal justice system that is more interested in closing their file than helping them find justice. This victim's inner strength makes her story the exception.
This story takes place in Madison, Wisconsin, long perceived to be a bastion of progressive ideas. But Cry Rape exposes the plain fact that Madison's government can be as self-serving and self-protective as governments anywhere. The central story is the rape victim's years-long ordeal; but the strong secondary story is the way the system deals with a cop who shouldn't be a cop. He is rewarded and remains today an honored officer.
In spite of the ugliness exposed in Cry Rape, it does offer us a spark of hope. It shows that investigative journalism can make a positive difference and that there are some reporters and editors willing to stick with a difficult story. We learn that there actually are honest attorneys who seek justice for their clients instead of just clocking billing hours.
Readers unconnected to Madison or Wisconsin will be entertained by Cry Rape's distinct detective novel feel and the twists and turns that lead to surprising discoveries throughout the story. Alert, informed readers might find similarities between the way Madison's city government and the University of Wisconsin, Madison deal with liars and bad apples. Promoting such people seems to be the Madison Idea.

Wonderful ending to the series........2006-09-15
This was the third and final book in the Yukon Quest series. You have all your questions answered. I enjoyed this series a great deal. It wasn't a difficult read (I read all three books in three days!) and I loved the characters. This series has it all: adverture, romance, betrayl, forgivness and faith. I recommend this series to anyone.

This is the last book in a series of three. The series is a must read as far as I'm concerned! It's a relaxing, easy, enjoyable series with lots of sadness but much happiness as was true in those days. I have enjoyed many of Tracie Peterson's books and highly recommend them.

In the last part of this beautifully written story all the loose ends are tied. Although the end isn't the most original writing, I have seen, I still enjoyed it. Her writing makes you think your on the Yukon and it is a great story. The faith parts aren't very realistic, but I think its good that she addresses them. If you read the first books you really must finish this last conclusion of the journey.
A Little Unbelievable.......2003-05-25
Miranda was separated from her traveling party in the previous book and in this book we find her in the able hands of Teddy Davenport. Teddy is a botanist in Alaska studying the trees and plants. In the presence of Miranda Teddy's heart opens to new ideas even though he is committed to his work. Will Teddy open up to new ideas?
Grace is struggling with not knowing where her husband is or if he wants to be with her anymore. She gives birth to their child and feels regretful that her husband hasn't seen the child. She also feels bad that her and her child are a burden to her friends. What will happen between Grace and her husband?
In this book Tracie did another great job in continuing the story line but some of the stuff gets a little unbelievable. The characters have a barely faltering faith. I mean they struggle with it but the next minute they're fine. Otherwise this book was great!

This is complex and detailed history indeed, and Paula Mitchell Marks ambitiously grasps at nearly four centuries of conflict in In a Barren Land, beginning with the first European settlements in America and extending to the courtroom showdowns of the 1990s. Indian Culture is diversly spread throughout the south.......1999-05-14
This is an excellent book to read if you are searching for more information about Indian movements west and the details of the movements. I bought the book specifically to find out more about the Cherokee East Indians and their movement west to Join the Oklahoma and Texas Indians already in place. John Ross, of course went to Washington, and tried to use his understanding and influence to affect the longevity of the Cherokee nation. Unfortunately, Andrew Jackson and his Federal Troops saw the world differently and Cherokees were being driven out of Georgia with the discovery of gold. Other tribes were dispersed as well. The movement west was called by some, the Trail of Tears of 1838, but this book describes in detail a larger period of time with a much wider scope to include many tribes, and the details of their destinations and their plight in arriving there. The book is candid about the people who became interlopers, i.e., became so normal to see about the place that they were put to work and became tribal members. Many had married indian women, and the author details that many had no skills to speak of. In fact, the author details, many became blacksmiths for lack of any other trade and the Indians welcomed them to their homeplace to practice such trades. Todays excellent automobile mechanics are of Cherokee or other Indian Ancestory and they possess uncanny analytical skills which are probably due to the Indian Ancestory. You will enjoy reading the book because it has new points of view which you will probably not see in other Indian publications , and it will, no doubt, help you to answer your Indian questions.

Based on over fifteen years of research, Antarctica Unveiled tells the story of Robert Falcon Scott's first Antarctic expedition, and expedition that has largely been erased from public perception by the mass attention devoted to the drama of his last expedition.
David E. Yelverton first recounts the half-century of campaigning that led to a pan European assault on the unknown continent at the dawn of the twentieth century. The book takes the reader along on the Discovery Expedition and into the terrain that faced Scott and his companions they led parties into unknown-and often dauntingly mountainous-territory to bring back the data and specimens that launched a century of research. Moreover. Yelverton analyzes the inexorable factors that governed Scott's conduct of the expedition and contrasts the poignant erosion of his hopes with the achievement of goals-proof that the Antarctic Continent existed and the location of the South Magnetic Pole-to which the expedition's patrons attached their greatest hopes.
The book concludes with an account of the buildup of the race for the Pole that was the almost inevitable aftermath of Scott's achievement. Illustrated with more than 40 remarkable black-and-white photographs, Antarctica Unveiled is a must for the armchair traveler, historian, and Antarctic enthusiast.

A scholarly work.......2001-07-20
Historian David Yelverton takes a long overdue look at Scott's Discovery expedition, the first significant attempt to probe the interior of that great southern continent. He pays great attention to Scott's difficulties in securing funds, crew, supplies and so forth. And, of course, Yelverton writes at length on the Discovery herself, an leaky craft that would have never made it south were it not for the constant struggle at the pumps. There is also a good deal on the cooperative effort with the Germans (!) on making often difficult magnetic observations, one of the principal reasons for the expedition in the first place.
This book is an absolute must for anyone interested in the history of the Antartic continent, Scott and, to a lesser degree, Shackleton. It is, without question, the most complete review of the Discovery expedition.
Although Scott's disaster in 1912 overshadows the Discovery effort, it could be said (and this is the point of "Unveiled") that there was much more meaningful work accomplished during this 1901-03 expedition.
Most readers will find "Unveiled" ponderous a times, although that is to be expected in a work of this depth and precision. I was disappointed with the occasional childish snipes at Roland Huntford's monumental "Last Place on Earth," a book that is a sore point with Scott's many fans. It's too bad that writers on Antarctic exploration feel as if they have to be one side of the fence or the other. Scott accomplished more than most other polar explorers -- but he also made many, many blunders.
But, in the main, "Antartic Unveiled" is worth looking into.
A less negative look at Scott's first expedition.......2001-03-06
Recent writings on Antarctic exploration have not been kind to Scott's leadership. If you're interested in a different look at the man (to some degree) and the first (Discovery) expedition try this book. The author gives one a sense of life on the expedition and takes one along through daily life on the ship, over the winter and on the sledging journies. Heavy on detail and a bit too focused on 'righting the wrongs' of Huntford, etc., the result seems an extremely well-researched view of the scientific goals and results of the expedition. (And, perhaps the author can be forgiven for the emphasis on righting wrongs--previous works have certainly emphasized contrary views.) I've long felt that viewing the turn-of-the-century expeditions through today's 'lens' is problematic. Scott and the others were English men of their time and subject to those values, just as we are products of our time. I recommend the work to those interested in a detailed view of that first expedition, how its course affected the Terra Nova expedition, and a different view of the explorers and the expedition--placed in their time.
