Book Description
This accessible, new reference work shows how and why RF energy is created within a printed circuit board and the manner in which propagation occurs. With lucid explanations, this book enables engineers to grasp both the fundamentals of EMC theory and signal integrity and the mitigation process needed to prevent an EMC event. Author Montrose also shows the relationship between time and frequency domains to help you meet mandatory compliance requirements placed on printed circuit boards.
Using real-world examples the book features:
- Clear discussions, without complex mathematical analysis, of flux minimization concepts
- Extensive analysis of capacitor usage for various applications
- Detailed examination of components characteristics with various grounding methodologies, including implementation techniques
- An in-depth study of transmission line theory
- A careful look at signal integrity, crosstalk, and termination

reduce your EMI .......2006-03-06
If you are a circuit designer building a commercial product, then it is necessary to minimise the RF emissions. But many texts on circuitry gloss over the details of how to do this. Perhaps considered too uninteresting.
Montrose offers a detailed contrast. But readily accessible to anyone with an electrical engineering degree. Hence you can read tips on how to reduce the loop area on a PCB. Indeed, he suggests that you can use surface mount components, since they usually possess smaller loop area.
There are also recent innovations. Like grounding a heatsink for a microprocessor. The latest CPUs often dissipate enormous amounts of heat. But hitherto, little attention was often paid to actually grounding the requisite heatsink.
The book also devotes an entire chapter to the crucial idea of an image plane. It points out possible problems with an implementation, and how to solve these.
Misleading.......2002-03-28
This book is well oganized and easy to use, but the information is often incorrect. We have found it to cause more problems than solve. Paul Clayton's book come much more highly recommended.
EMC Made Simple.......2000-08-23
Practical explanation of printed circuit board emissions, routing, trace termination ... covers all aspects of the printed circuit board. A must for the PCB engineer's reference shelf.

High-Speed Digital Design: A Handbook of Black Magic

Book Description
"Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is an engineering discipline often identified as black magic. This belief exists because the fundamental mechanisms on how radio frequency (RF) energy is developed within a printed circuit board (PCB) is not well understood by practicing engineers. Rigorous mathematical analysis is not required to design a PCB. Using basic EMC theory and converting complex concepts into simple analogies helps engineers understand the mitigation process that deters EMC events from occurring.
This user-friendly reference covers a broad spectrum of information never before published, and is as fluid and comprehensive as the first edition. The simplified approach to PCB design and layout is based on real-life experience, training, and knowledge. Printed Circuit Board Techniques for EMC Compliance, Second Edition will help prevent the emission or reception of unwanted RF energy generated by components and interconnects, thus achieving acceptable levels of EMC for electrical equipment. It prepares one for complying with stringent domestic and international regulatory requirements. Also, it teaches how to solve complex problems with a minimal amount of theory and math. Essential topics discussed include:
- Introduction to EMC
- Interconnects and I/O
- PCB basics
- Electrostatic discharge protection
- Bypassing and decoupling
- Backplanes-Ribbon Cables-Daughter Cards
- Clock Circuits-Trace Routing-Terminations
- Miscellaneous design techniques
This rules-driven bookformatted for quick access and cross-referenceis ideal for electrical and EMC engineers, consultants, technicians, and PCB designers regardless of experience or educational background."

Terrible book.......2004-07-06
This book looks perfect on paper. The subject matter is important, it talks about many practical concepts, the cover is cute, etc. But trying to read this book I was very disappointed. The author has just cut and pasted some well-known ideas but doesn't explain anything clearly. Despite knowing the subject I found it painful to follow. I wanted to throw the book away after reading a few sections, but I kept telling myself "it can't be that bad, the material is fine, let me give it another chance". But the book is that bad! It is no excuse that this is a "handbook". There are many books that are not textbooks that do a great job explaining things. I feel sorry for anybody who is trying to learn by reading this book. If you are a beginner read Howard Johnson's classic "Black Magic" book. If you are more advanced read Clayton Paul or books on Microwave design.
I donated my book to the city library, but I was very tempted to throw it away to save somebody else from struggling with it.
OK, but missing something.......2003-10-29
So far it has been useful in my designs. They seem to be better and I am sure the book has helped with certification. It has some very useful information. Unfortunatly, it does not have much supporting information or theoretical proofs. Perhaps this helps the non-math oriented user, but I can't imagine why a non-math oriented user would need such a book or what such a person would be doing designing for EMC. As an engineer, I don't take things on face value without understanding of why. The lack of general theory also makes it difficult to extend the information provided to areas not covered in the book. In short, I'd like to know a bit more about why.
good for a lot of EMC/EMI pains.......2001-07-30
I got this book because the boss said to find something to help resolve the FCC/CE and other world EMI/EMC compliance issues we have, and it was instantly used and had the answers we needed.
It covers power and grounds, signal integrity, and used with Howard Johnson's book (High Speed Digital Design), gives a strong insight to the PC board layout issues of high speed digital and analog electronics.
Book Description
Quick: What's the leading dog breed in the world? Well, of course, it isn't a breed at all. The top dog, in terms of the numbers, is the humble mutt. And muttsin their infinitely quirky, oddball, all-mixed-up varietyhave a very special place in all our hearts.
Even so, mutts' contributions to dogdomand to the millions of human beings whose lives they share and enrichhave tended to remain uncelebrated. With Mutts, pet photographer Sharon Montrose aims to elevate these beloved but underappreciated companions' status through a series of 60 portraits that unleash the intelligence, cockiness, loyalty, energy, good looks, and sheer irresistibility of the mixed-breed dog.
It's a job to which Montrose brings a substantial professional pedigree (so to speak). In her four previous hit books for STC, she lovingly trained her camera's eye on purebred puppies, chihuahuas, dachshunds, and labs. Now, in this beautifully photographed and impeccably designed book, she accords mutts the same V.I.P. (Very Important Pooch) treatment. No matter what the mixcocker spaniel/poodle, terrier/chihuahua, poodle/labrador, or heeler/corgiMontrose's gentle pack of adorable mongrels is guaranteed to charm. Like each of its subjects, Mutts makes a one-of-a-kind addition to any dog lover's life.

Book Description
The Keep It Simple (KISS) philosophy is the primary focus of this book. It is written in very simple language with minimal math, as a compilation of helpful EMI troubleshooting hints. Its light-hearted tone is at odds with the extreme seriousness of most engineering reference works that become boring after a few pages. This text tells engineers what to do and how to do it. Only a basic knowledge of math, electronics, and a basic understanding of EMI/EMC are necessary to understand the concepts and circuits described.
Once EMC troubleshooting is demystified, readers learn there are quick and simple techniques to solve complicated problems a key aspect of this book. Simple and inexpensive methods to resolve EMI issues are discussed to help generate unique ideas and methods for developing additional diagnostic tools and measurement procedures. An appendix on how to build probes is included. It can be a fun activity, even humorous at times with bizarre techniques (i.e., the sticky finger probe).

Just Beautiful.......2003-12-30
As an amateur photographer and animal lover, I'm on the lookout for dog portraits that are something special - this book has them! The photos are divine and the "meanings" of each subject's name are terrific. You get a real feeling for each dog's personality, something which is missing from so many so-called "great" animal portraits. If you love dogs and want to have a great coffee table book, or give it as a gift, this is the one!
A Rare Beauty.......2003-07-08
A Dog Walker/Trainer with a lifetime love for photography, this is my favorite kind of book. For sure. I've picked up many, but Sharon Montrose is my favorite. Every photo is so beautiful and I just LOVE how she captures the personality of her furry subjects. That's the true talent in my eyes. Of all of versions of this kind of work I have perused, this is my favorite one. Lightweights (Sharon Montrose) is a close second.
I also am aslo a fan of "If only you knew how much I smell you." (Photos - Valerie Shaff/Text - Roy Blount Jr.)
Quirky and creative pictorial portrayel.......2003-03-02

A Best Buy For Dog Lovers.......2002-11-22
This is the sweetest book I've ever bought. When I picked up this book in the bookstore I sat on the floor in the middle of the aisle and just started glowing as I went through the whole book page by page- It truly captures our sweet canine companions at their best. The photos are amazing and the sayings fit perfectly. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has a love for dogs. It will brighten your day and make you laugh out loud. It captures our animals true spirits.
Dogtionary.......2002-01-10
After giving a few copies of Dogtionary as Christmas gifts, I am ordering a few more because the book was such a big hit with my friends. These dog portraits are beautiful and yet so simple. Any dog owner who has struggled to get a good picture of their pet can take inspiration from this book. Sharon Montrose clearly knows and loves her subjects well.

CUTE COFFEE TABLE BOOK!.......2005-09-21
THIS IS SUCH A CUTE BOOK FILLED WITH PICTURES OF CHIHUAHUA'S AND THEIR DAILY "FAVORITES". MY DAUGHTER AND I JUST LOVE THIS BOOK AND LOOK THROUGH IT ALMOST EVERY NIGHT BEFORE GOING TO BED. IT IS REALLY A UNIQUE BOOK TO HAVE IF YOU LOVE CHIHUAHUA'S LIKE WE DO!
A must for all who love Chihuahuas!.......2004-07-28
I bought two copies of this book on Amazon...one for myself and one as a gift. This is a great coffee table book on Chihuahuas! The book presents several pages of full-page photos on each Chi and features them doing their favorite things (hanging out at Venice Beach, being a co-pilot of their owner's plane, visiting Hollywood, etc.) Montrose, a professional photographer, has a knack for capturing the vibrant personalities of each dog. The photos are artsy, funky, and fun! Definitely not your typical book on dogs in which every picture is posed. I would definitely recommend this for any Chihuahua fan!
A must for chihuahua lovers.......2004-07-16
This book makes a fabulous gift for all people who love Chihuahuas! The author, a professional photographer, does a superb job of showcasing the personalities and adventures of these adorable "carry-ons." The photographs are artistic, edgy, and fun! Unlike most other pet books, this one is prime coffee table material! Several full-color pages are devoted to each pooch hanging out in their favorite haunting grounds (Venice Beach, a flat in Paris, the laundromat, cockpit of a plane, etc.). Highly recommended for all Chi lovers...I already bought two copies - one for me and one for a friend.
Book Description
He was a beloved family physician and a ruthless doctor of death who almost got away with murder. It was a friendly hunting trip-- two men kicking back, shooting at clay pigeons on campgrounds near rural Montrose, Pa. Then, a single shot rang out. Moments later, Marty Dillon, a promising young lawyer, was dead of a gunshot wound to the chest. His friend, Dr. Stephen Scher, later tearfully explained that Dillon had been running with a shotgun after a porcupine, and tripped and fell, accidentally killing himself. But what really happened?Marty Dillon's violent death was immediately declared an accident by the local coroner in 1976. But as Dillon's body was lowered into the cold ground, did a damning secret, one that would haunt his friends and family for decades, go with him?* Were rumors of an affair between Dr. Scher and Marty's wife, Pat, true?* Why did the couple marry so soon after Dillon's death?* If the shot was self-inflicted, why did the bullet come from Dr. Scher's gun?* What was it about Dillon's bloody wound that cast suspicion on Scher? After 20 years of pleading with authorities and finally hiring their own investigators, Dillon's parents persuaded the Pennsylvania State Police to reopen the case. They exhumed Dillon's body-- and his decayed remains told the real story of that tragic day two decaeds earlier. On October 22, 1997, Dr. Stephen Scher was convicted of the murder of Marty Dillon-- final justice for a cold-blooded killer who for 20 years thought he had gotten away with murder.
Customer Reviews:
Yes, it is a page turner, but I wanted more.......2005-06-28
A great book, but...I wanted more character description. It is very obvious who was willing to be interviewed by the author and who was not (namely, Dr. Scher and his wife Pat Dillon Scher). I guess they felt they would come out worse than they already do in the story. This book has been one of the saddest true crime stories I have ever read. Almost all of the main characters are despicable, but you can't put the book down.
Secret yet to be found.......2004-11-09
I found myself shocked and surprise about the begining of this story The Secrets in the Grave. The story had taken place in a rural town in northern Pennsylvania in the mid 1970's, Two succesful people that go by the names of Marty Dillion who is a lawyer and a doctor who name is Stephen Scher.
These two men were tareget practing with rifles and shooting at clay pigeions. When Stephen had fired a shot from his rifle, accidently Marty was in the way and got a bullet in his chest. Marty had died in less then a hour before the authoritys and help came.
Stephen had told the authoritys that Dillion had accidently shot himself which he had manage to keep a straight face to make it look like he had nothing to do with the murder. If i was in stephen shoes i wouldn't beable to live with myself with out paying the consequences. I would have told the truth and less of a charge would be bought. But by lieing he would be getting himself into more trouble in the years to come by. There is a secret that is laying beneath the ground that will help authoritys solve this case but it will not be found right away. We will just have to continue to find out how they will solve this case.
Hard to put down.......2003-11-25
Maria Eftimiades has given us a well-written, well-researched book on a murder that took 20 years to solve.
I don't know who I was more disgusted by: the sociopathic, cruel murderer Stephen Scher (who drove his first wife, Anne, to the brink of suicide); Pat Dillon Scher, who remains a spoiled brat to this day; Martin Dillon's two children who "disowned" their own grandparents for wanting the murder of their own father to pay for his heinous deed (Suzanne I would especially love to slap) or Pat's parents, who raised her to think she was better than everyone else in the world and "deserved the best", no matter who she hurt to get it.
All in all, great book. Difficult to put down!
JUSTICE PREVAILS!!.......2000-08-27
The author does a superb job of bringing the reader all the details of the gruesome murder of Pennsylvania Attorney Marty Dillon.... June 2, 1976 Marty and his friend, Dr. Stephen Scher, went hunting.........according to Dr. Scher, Marty got killed while chasing a porpupine, when he tripped and his gun went off.... Before two years were gone by, the doctor married Marty's widow...the town became a little suspicious, and Marty's parents always believed something was "fishy"......... It took 20 years of battling the system, but at last Marty's body was exhumed .... the autopsy showed that the wounds were not found to be self-inflicted and his death was finally ruled a homicide......... I don't read true-crime novels as I find them too gory, gritty and disturbing..........however, while visiting my Mom, and forgetting to bring the book I was reading, I looked through her large pile..........since she's not a reader of fiction, my selection was limited........] This book was a quick and compelling read...My heart broke for Marty's parents......I suggest you read it yourself and draw your conclusions..........as for mine, I'm so glad that our great legal system still (for the most part) works!
A MUST READ!!! MARIA HAS DONE HER HOMEWORK.......1999-08-06
I read this book on a bus trip from Baltimore to (ironically) Montrose, and as a former resident of Montrose, I must say that this book was a joy to read. Although I was not a resident of the town in 1976, I have spoken to enough people that knew about the situation Maria has captured the true feeling of this town and their opinion. Yes, Larry Dillon did pass away in 1998, but he lived to see that justice was served. Although, poor Jo has to live with the fact that Stephen Scher was released from prison in 1999 and is a free man once again. I guess the system CAN forgive and forget!
Book Description
Something is blooming every day of the year in the renowned gardens at Montrose, Nancy Goodwin’s nineteenth-century property in historic Hillsborough, North Carolina. Since moving to Montrose with her husband Craufurd in 1977, Goodwin has transformed more than twenty acres into an extraordinary complex of interlocking gardens that come in and out of focus as the seasons overlap and change.
Beautifully written and illustrated, Montrose: Life in a Garden is Goodwin’s affectionate biography of her gardens, recounting how and why each section was developed over the years, including the Dianthus Walk, Nandinaland, Hellebore Slope, Mother-in-Law Walk, Snowdrop Woods, and Jo’s Bed. It is also a meticulous month-by-month chronicle of a specific year in these gardens—a year that saw a punishing drought that threatened Goodwin’s no-irrigation policy, a damaging December ice storm, and the beginnings of a plan to preserve Montrose in the future.
Working on her knees for long days throughout the year, Nancy Goodwin always has a vision of how her gardens will appear in twelve months or in twelve years. She will spend weeks, for instance, planting hundreds of snow drops along a woodsy path in order to enjoy a fleeting week of exquisite beauty in coming years. She never puts anything into the ground without imagining what form, color, and texture it will add to a bed. With tireless patience and unflagging optimism, Goodwin will wait years to see a single plant bloom.
Following Goodwin’s activities throughout the year, readers will learn the fundamentals of maintaining a four-season garden in Zone 7 in the South. Award-winning garden illustrator Ippy Patterson has provided more than 160 lavish illustrations of the gardens at Montrose and these meticulously detailed drawings appear throughout the book.
Customer Reviews:
A Magnificent Gardening Obsession.......2006-09-02
Nancy Goodwin's name is well known in gardening circles throughout the United States. Some thirty years ago, she and her husband Craufurd Goodwin bought Montrose, a 60-acre historic property in Hillsborough, North Carolina; and since that time they have devoted their efforts primarily to creating and nurturing a garden that covers almost the entire acreage. For about ten years they ran a nursery; but this became a victim of its own success in that its ever-increasing demands took too much time away from Ms. Goodwin's gardening. (She gave up teaching music for the same reason, although she keeps a harpsichord for those times when she wishes to play.)
Montrose presents, in loving detail, the details and demands of the Goodwins' gardening year. Ms. Goodwin's knowledge of plants is encyclopedic, and her text is enhanced by Ippy Patterson's graceful, delicate artwork. Any dedicated gardener, especially one in Zone 7, would cherish the book, not only as a work of art but as a comprehensive guide to plants in that region.
The Goodwins have arranged for the Garden Conservancy to preserve and care for Montrose when they are no longer able to do so. In the meantime, Montrose offers a loving, graceful blueprint of their gardening year; and Ms. Goodwin is living her dream.
Lovely & Inspiring - Not a How-to Book.......2006-02-23
This is the perfect garden book to curl up with on a cold winter's day, when you can't actually do anything in your own garden except dream. The biggest part of its charm for me is the lovely watercolor/botanical illustrations that are generously scattered throughout; the book itself is beautifully produced, with high quality paper & attractice layout & font.
Nancy Goodwin's writing is in a very simple, narrative style, and while it doesn't quite make the category of great garden writing, it certainly provides a pleasant picture of her amazing accomplishments in the gardens she created at Montrose, in North Carolina. She is remarkable in her ability to note both the minute details of an individual plant's growth and habit and the broad, sweeping overall design of a very complex estate.
This book would make an excellent gift for literate gardeners. Note that it is not a how-to gardening book - no directions for creating your own garden paradise - although there is certainly wisdom to be gleaned as Goodwin takes you through a year in her Southern garden. No glossy photos either, just the far more artistic and soothing softly done sketches & watercolors of individual plants.
