Opinion on shipping is HORRIBLE! STAY AWAY from AMAZON!!! Book is great, though........2007-09-24
I ordered this book for a class I had, had to study on it.
I ordered it on 8/23/2007 paying to have it shipped next day, the seller is NOT an amazon merchant but AMAZON itself!
I never received it, I had to call and re-order it in order to get it.
I received it in the middle of September!
The book itself is very nice and user friendly with a lot of exercises to let you practice what you study in the chapter. It is very well designed and it lets you really understand Photoshop for the web.
The only problem with it was AMAZON did NOT honor the original purchase nor the shipping!
I'm all about practice.......2007-06-27
I like reading, but still I have a hard time with textbooks, learning from examples like this book is so much easier and interactive. If you want a very detailed book...you won't get that much detail; if you want to learn basics and a little bit more this is just perfect. I like this book.
Wonderful.......2007-06-20
I haven't designed a website in 5 years and was looking to get started on doing them again, but needed a refresher. I didn't have any of my notes or books from school, needless to say, and it would have been ancient anyway. But this book was exactly what I needed. It was easy to follow and read. The step-by-step instructions and pictures were essential to making the book an easy read and understandable. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who wants to make websites and has a basic understanding of photoshop and other applications.
Solid purchase.......2007-04-04
This book is good at showing you how to make images ready for the web. It's not for first time photoshop users, but if you need tips and tricks for web design, it's a good book to have.
outstanding training for the beginner.......2007-03-30
After 11 chapters, it's carefully written/organized, 'crystal clear' (as another said), visually interesting to read (not tiresome like other training books) and the movie tutorials give perfect reinforcement to the reading and exercises. A great confidence builder if you're new to Photoshop. Tanya is a first-rate teacher and exceptional communicator. Her approach is simple but not simplistic. I need to read more of her books!

Good resource for color management........2006-12-27
This is a great book on color management. Color management is a oft-misunderstood subject and it is fair to say that there are good reasons for this - mainly that it is complicated.
Andrew Rodney does not simplify the subject, thus the reason I did not give this four stars. However, if you are serious about the subject, this book is a vital tool in trying to understand color management.
Some of the book is tedious and some of it is hard to understand, but there are large parts of the book which offer valuable and understandable information on color management and your quest to achieve this "holy grail."
My suggestion is that if you are casually trying to understand how to calibrate your monitor, this book may not be for you. If you are seriously trying to understand color management and are building a library of useful references and gleaning useful nuggets of information from several different books in your quest to achieve color management nirvana - then this book should be in your library.
Meh... Next........2006-05-23
Nobody can deny that Mr. Rodney knows how color management works in Photoshop better than most people, but unfortunately, knowledge of a subject doesn't make you a good writer. I find the bulk of Mr. Rodney's ramblings (both those published on his website-that-time-forgot and posted to various discussion groups and mailing lists) to teeter on the verge of complete unreadability most of the time, and while my hopes were high that a good editor might tame his curious linguistic proclivities here, they were quickly dashed upon skimming through the text. What's worse, the illustrations and photos in every single copy of this book I've ever seen have suffered from severe magenta color casts, leading one to wonder why the author and his publishing company failed to practice what they preached in bringing this title to the public. If you didn't know who Andrew Rodney was to begin with, you'd likely think him full of beans based on the appearance of the plates in this volume. After all, why should readers believe consistent, predictable color in print to be a realistically attainable goal when even the guy who wrote the book on the subject can't seem to achieve it?
There's certainly some good information in between these covers, but none of it is groundbreaking in any way. You might learn something interesting about WWII by asking your grandfather to tell you some old war stories, but you'll have to suffer through a lot of pointless rambling to get to it, and that's pretty much what reading this book feels like. About the only thing this book really has going for it that its competitors lack is the nostalgia longtime Photoshop users will likely feel at the sight of the dog image gracing the cover. Since you can see that image right here for free, there's not a lot of point in paying for yet another rehashing of this subject matter, even at amazon's substantially discounted price. I have no doubt that Mr. Rodney is a very technically proficient color management consultant who can deliver $10,000 worth of results to all who can afford his services, but his efforts in the creative fields of writing, illustration and design just ain't worth a plugged nickel.
It may also be worth noting that more than one of the glowing 5-star reviews that have been posted here were planted by friends and associates of Mr. Rodney. How's that for class?
The best tutorial introduction to CMS........2005-11-27
Get Andrew Rodney's book, and a copy of Real World Color Management, and you'll have the best existing CMS tutorial and the the best reference text.

Real world techniques to tackle color management.......2005-09-25
Thanks Andrew Rodney, I just received your new book and I just couldn't wait to thank you for having made all this knowledge available to us. This book will be a milestone on the subject of color management as it dares to go into the nitty-gritty details of "how to make it work in real life".
Andre Dumas "Colorman 042000"
Charming, lightweight banter.......2005-09-16
There are entirely too many books like this. 100 pages of information hidden in clouds of personal chatter, name dropping and cliches. Too bad because this is an important area that is almost completely misunderstood. This material should be presented to experienced photographers at an engineering level. It isn't an "all you have to do is..." subject.
If you don't know anything about color, the first 30 pages of this book might help. If you know a lot about photography this book will irritate you, especially when the author runs aground on the subject of Gamma, as so many others have. There is excellent information on the Web that covers this subject so well, nobody needs to misunderstand it.
If you already us Photoshop CS2 and Camera RAW you don't need this book. If you don't use them, you should. Then go to the Adobe website and pick up the white papers by Bruce Fraser and Jeff Schewe. They are free, very well written and focussed on how Photoshop works and what you need to know.
I would recommend anything written by Blatner & Fraser, or Schewe. Add your own experience and just do it. You'll be better off.

A book to treasure.......2004-07-29
A true guide on technique,
but also to build excitment and passion for this craft.
neither very big nor very useful.......2002-09-19
Pleasing to the eye but it surely fails to live up to the promise of its title. The instructions on constructing and throwing pots is adequate (though scanty). The sections on other aspects of the craft are more an outline than a guide. Disappointed, I searched our local community college library and found several comprehensive instructional texts on ceramics that were bigger and better than this book - though most were written 30 years ago.
Not a helpful resource for learning on the wheel.......2002-06-24
I was disappointed after receiving this book. While it gave a nice overview of different types of ceramics, it did not give the detailed information I was looking for. The summary on wheel throwing was relatively small and gave virtually no information regarding types of wheels or information on selecting one. The description of the book does seem a bit misleading...leading one to believe that this book would be an invaluable, detailed reference source. I found this not to be the case and would not recommend it for those looking for a reference document.
Very Broadly informative.......2002-06-21
This book covers all major types of clay and ceramic activities. If you are interested in only one type (for example, casting in a mold from clay slip)it may not give you as much information as you want. If you are curious about clay, generally, or want an overview to decide what you might like to try, this is a very useful book. The illustrations and directions are very clear.
The Big Book of Ceramics.......2001-11-07
I was so absolute beginner in ceramics and afraid of even touching a clay. In the same day I got the book I've made my first piece. And... was satisfied :=)
Guy is great, I've bought two more books by this author, and was thrilled even more, it's great book to begin with, but also to stick with all the time... full of good information, practical advices, things that you just can't find a person to ask and many many pictures that helps so much.
Anyway, you won't regret buying it.

Brilliant for school holidays!.......2007-01-10
My 5 year daughter and I have been having heaps of fun creating the art in this book. While my 2 year old son has an afternoon sleep we can complete one of these activities. The materials are mostly household items and the rest are easy to come by. It's very well presented with easy to follow steps. It's got all the old "classics" - paper dolls, papier-mache, spoon puppets and the egg carton caterpillar. A much better way to fill in an afternoon than her watching a movie while I clean the house!
I haven't seen it for sale in Australia and am very glad to get it from Amazon.
We love it!
Great ideas for Preschoolers.......2007-01-08
I work with special ed preschoolers and this book was very helpful in planning art projects with the kids. The instructions are clear, the ideas are fun and there are pictures of what the finished product should look like. I would highly recommend this book to anyone working with young kids; teacher or parent
Little hands, Big ideas.......2006-07-19
This book is perfect for your little ones. My 2 1/2 year old daughter loved the crafts we have already done out of the book. I also work with children as my job and also at my church. I highly recommend this book to all you parents, grandparents, Aunt & Uncles, All care givers, and even the expecting parents. A+ Book.
Simple, realistic art projects for toddlers and preschoolers.......2004-10-10
I have a three-year old daughter with whom I wanted to explore arts and crafts. I looked at many different arts and crafts books before choosing this one to buy. Many other books that I looked at had projects that had complicated instructions or used materials that were expensive. I needed a book that I could pull off the bookshelf, open up, and pick a suitable art project quickly. Little Hands has realistic projects- by that, I mean projects that are meaningful, uncomplicated, and use basic materials that you're likely to have around the house.
WORTH EVERY PENNY !.......2003-11-02
This book had everything I was looking for & more for my four year old. There are So many projects for different levels, with simple instructions. I was delighted to see some projects that I did long ago when I was a child, like paper dolls holding hands, paper snow flakes & sock puppets. The list goes on & on... :)

Terrible, terrible, terrible.......2007-05-04
Please save your money, I was one of the persons who did not take into consideration what the reviews said about this book. You will be mad at yourself for wasting money.
Although everything in it isn't perfect, this book is well worth owning!.......2007-03-19
Being the author of several books on the martial arts and fighting, I am always looking for books of exceptional quality to add to my library. If I have a book in my library, it's definitely worth owning. One such book is Michael D. Echanis', "Knife Fighting, Knife Throwing for Combat." This book is directly influenced by the Korean martial art of Hwarang Do and its current Grandmaster Joo Bang Lee, who Echanis had studied under before his untimely demise in Nicaragua.
This book along with its two companion volumes, "Basic Stick Fighting for Combat" and "Knife Self-Defense for Combat," were not initially released to the general public, but instead were only available to certified and recognized self-defense instructors. These books were originally intended to be military training manuals for the various elite units in the United States military. These were units such as the Special Forces, Army Rangers, Navy Seals, etc.
This volume, like the other two in this series, starts out with a brief section on the history of Hwarang Do and its relationship to hand-to-hand combat. This is followed by another brief section that looks at the theory and internal dynamics which make up this very impressive art.
Introduction:
This section begins with a lot of practical advice on the use of a knife against an attacker during combat.
3 Phases of Knife Training:
a. Straight Line Attack
b. Counterattack
c. Visualization
2 Knife Fighting Distances:
a. Outside Attacks
b. Inside Attacks
Basic Principles of Knife Fighting:
This section goes over the basic principles that should be utilized when practicing with and/or utilizing a knife in an actual self-defense encounter. I found this section to be very practical and relevant to the topic, although I thought it was a bit brief and worthy of many additional pages.
Six Basic Rules to Observe During Training and Actual Combat:
1. Conceal the weapon...
2. Observation...
3. Focus on deep breathing...
4. Slash, don't stab...
5. Observe the enemy...
6. Breath control and mental focus of power...
Knife Training:
One would be hard pressed to argue that this section includes some of the best information that you can use in order to train effectively with a knife, and for the effective use of said knife in an actual combat situation. This includes such things as not only how and when to train, but also the psychological factors involved in knife training and how to improve your own mental abilities.
Strategy:
Once again this is a section that is so well done that it can be applied to all forms of combat, not just those using a knife. The authors grasp of strategy and the way he explains it is very easy to understand and is very realistic, although it may be a bit advanced for the beginning student. Also included in this section are the three phases of strategy.
Combat Applications:
Through the detailed use of photographs and fairly detailed sections of text, the author and his assistants take you through numerous different examples (17 to be exact) of how to use a knife and/or knives during an armed and also unarmed self-defense encounter.
Basic Principles of Knife Throwing:
As a general rule, "Never throw your knife at your opponent." This results in a lost weapon and the very real possibility that your attacker could pick it up and use it against you. However, just like every rule, there are exceptions.
Basic Knife Throwing Techniques:
In this section, 14 different throws are demonstrated and explained to you through the use of photographs and text.
This book ends with a basic but well done chart on the vital areas to target with a knife during a self-defense encounter.
This book, like the other two in the series, does an exceptional job of explaining the techniques described within through detailed written descriptions and the use of clear and concise photographs and illustrations. The only thing that I would like to have seen a lot more of in this particular manner would have been some close-up shots during various phases of certain techniques.
Knife Fighting Classic - Good Intermediate Training Manual.......2006-10-13
"Knife Fighting, Knife Throwing for Combat" by Michael D. Echanis was originally published in the late 1970s and developed a `cult following' among martial artists and knife aficionados.
Echanis was a special operations soldier and a practitioner of the martial art of Hwa Rang Do. "Knife Fighting, Knife Throwing for Combat" begins with a short history of Hwa Rang Do and a tribute to the founders of the art.
The book next delves into combat mindset for the knife fighter. This includes `Six Basic Rules to Observe During Training and Actual Combat', mental focus, and breath control, and the `Three Phases of Strategy'.
The heart of "Knife Fighting, Knife Throwing for Combat" is various photo series demonstrating knife techniques. The techniques demonstrated are very much Hwa Rang Do style techniques as on might expect from Mr. Echanis' background, combined with a military combative focus intended for this book.
While not a beginner's book, "Knife Fighting, Knife Throwing for Combat" teaches `advanced beginner / intermediate' knife techniques that are easily learned by anyone with a good beginner's knowledge of knife fighting. This book also provides a good introduction to reverse grip and double-knife fighting. (Anyone who has seen Master James Keating's ~ Comtech / "Reverse-Grip Knife Fighting" will find the techniques in "Knife Fighting, Knife Throwing for Combat" familiar.)
The final section of "Knife Fighting, Knife Throwing for Combat" is an excellent discussion of knife throwing, or more appropriately throwing of many different items for combat. While many modern "knife fighters" argue against throwing a knife in combat, Echanis offers an insightful discussion of the applicability of knife throwing combat applications.
Overall, "Knife Fighting, Knife Throwing for Combat" is an excellent training manual for anyone who has mastered the basics of knife fighting and is now looking for a little bit more advanced-beginner / intermediate techniques to add to one's knife fighting arsenal.
Highly Recommended!
FORBIDDEN MALLJITSU TEXT!!!.......2006-06-26
The late Michael Echanis was a comic genius! I laughed so hard I nearly wet myself, reading this brilliant Malljitsu text regarding the blade arts -- which I have studied for 30 years.
The preface from Ohara (Black Belt) Publications warns that this is only a "basic introduction" to the blade secrets of Korean ninjutsu ("Sul-Sa"). Wow. My 30 years of training seems to have been in vain, as I cannot perform these "basic" techniques. I think that even James Keating and Kelly Worden would have difficulty with them. From this I conclude that either Echanis was a true demi-god (as many seem to believe), or he was living in a deluded fantasy world.
Blade techniques are intended to be simple and direct -- seldom more than "3 steps", due to the speed and unpredictability of combat. Most of Echanis's secret moves are well over 10 steps . . . some are over 20! This is not practical knife-fighting -- this is kata.
Echanis breaks all the rules here -- jumping, spinning, leaping, skipping, flailing, and performing forward rolls throughout. Two techniques actually involve phsically lifting the opponent over your head! The expressions on his face are priceless (anger, outrage, orgasmic, and constipated). He also grips the knives (yes, plural) in an unusual grip that I've never before seen -- actually, SEVERAL grips I've never before seen. For some reason, these grips are never discussed, nor are close-up shots provided (must be "too secret"). Footwork, carry, and drawing are not discussed either, nor is the use of training targets. Unusual for one who claims to constantly train and instruct others. This space is instead devoted to pictures of him prancing about as he flings knives at "multiple opponents." To his credit, in an opening paragraph he says that you should generally avoid throwing your knife, and that it is intended primarilly as a distraction to create an opening to charge in for a fatal blow.
On the positive side, aside from the unintended humor (of which there is plenty), Echanis made an excellent argument for the merits of the icepick/reverse grip at a time when others were denouncing it as "amateurish." He also advocates fighting with two knives at once. Nearly every finishing move is delivered via a powerful overhead blow from a unique angle -- after an opponent is sufficiently worn down, it might actually be a viable technique.
Mall ninjas be warned! You will NOT learn how to be a better fighter from this book!
A book by a true warrior.......2005-08-29
The late Mike Echanis was a true warrrior and has written a book for warriors. It is about combat, not sport and demonstrates very advanced knife techniques. These techniques have been proven in battle over centuries. In the Hwa Rang Do system, the knife becomes an extension of the hand. The techniques, although ably demonstrated and photographed, must still be practiced under the guidance of a Hwa Rang Do Master if one is to become proficient.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-05-23
The drawings are too small to see what you need to do. I know these hand claps and the songs and I don't think a school-age child could figure this out very easily.
Great to Share with your Kid and Her Friends.......2006-08-31
Written by twelve year old Sarah Bernstein, this fun book has all your favorite childhood "Hand Clap" games in it, from "Miss Mary Mack" to "Say, Say Oh Playmate". Bernstein researched and collected Hand Clap games from all over the country to gather over 40 "Hand Clap" games, including many I've never heard of, but all that I remember. Interestingly, the "Miss Lucy had a Steamboat" Hand Clap listed in the book, is not the scatological version I'd learned as a child, but rather a "clean" version you'd be happier to share with your children.
The book is laid out in a clever manner with the lyrics, the musical notes, as well as visual cues as to the hand movements. The last part of the book has a section for writing your own "Hand Clap" games with your children or friends. This book is sure to be a hit for your kids and their friends!
Lots of rhymes, but no melodies.......2006-08-12
This book has a lot of great rhymes and claps to clapping games, and it was written by a hippie looking adolescent. There is a pretty good explanation of the claps at the beginning of the book, which is good because many of the pictures would be impossible to figure out without it.
The book is near useless though, since it includes no melodies. So one need either already know the melodies, in which case you wouldn't need the book, make up melodies, in which case you might as well make up your own rhymes and claps, or speak the rhymes like a robot, and that is no fun at all. I found this extremely disappointing, but this may be a plus for people who can't read music.
Hard To Follow.......2002-08-16
I found this book hard to follow. The author put a lot of effort into trying to make this an easy book. There are 79 hand pictures of the basic hand claps with the movements described in words, but I just can't get it. Music notes are included for each rhyme. I wish the author would have included rhythym as well. I have yet to use it with my students.
High Five for Mary Mac'K.......2000-07-20
I am an elementary physical education teacher and I have thoroughly enjoyed using many of the hand clapping games in my classes. The students love the hand motions along with reciting the rhymes. This is great practice for coordination and rhythm. I would recommend this book for any educator looking for fun and exciting ways to engage students in hands on learnning.
Book Description
For the first time in the United States comes the tragic and profoundly important story of the legendary Canadian general who “watched as the devil took control of paradise on earth and fed on the blood of the people we were supposed to protect.” When Roméo Dallaire was called on to serve as force commander of the UN Assistance Mission for Rwanda, he believed that his assignment was to help two warring parties achieve the peace they both wanted. Instead, he was exposed to the most barbarous and chaotic display of civil war and genocide in the past decade, observing in just one hundred days the killings of more than eight hundred thousand Rwandans. With only a few troops, his own ingenuity and courage to direct his efforts, Dallaire rescued thousands, but his call for more support from the world body fell on deaf ears. In Shake Hands with the Devil, General Dallaire recreates the awful history the world community chose to ignore. He also chronicles his own progression from confident Cold Warrior to devastated UN commander, and finally to retired general struggling painfully, and publicly, to overcome posttraumatic stress disorder—the highest-ranking officer ever to share such experiences with readers.

An important book that could have used a good editor........2007-07-16
I agree with some of the negative comments about this book. It's an important book, but a good editor should have pared away a fair amount of the "today I had a meeting with..." and other items from his daily journal. The book would have been stronger by eliminating all too many of his detailed daily journal items. He could have gotten the message across better without burying us in all the acronyms, as someone mentioned. If someone gave a speech to the general public, and used all of those acronyms, a fair number of listeners would tune out. Sorry, but it's true. Very glad that I read the book, though!
Excellent book, a MUST read for all.......2007-03-07
I had high expectations when I began reading this book due to the praise it had received. When you start with such high expectations, you normally end up being disappointed. That wasn't the case here, this book lived up to my expectations!
Dallaire's book is, I believe, the best account out there of the tragic events that unfolded in Rwanda in 1994. Due to his responsibilities, he was aware of most of what was happening in most places within Rwanda, and he was also aware of what was going on at the UN and at the security council. He's the one person who was in the best position to tell this story as it happened. He also did a fine job writing it, the book reads quite well.
The main lesson that seems to come out of this story is that all the people or organisations that could have made a difference were too self-interested to take risks for innocent people. The RPF (the Tutsi rebel army that eventually took over the country and ended the slaughter) took their time to advance since they tried to minimize their casualties, the Western countries in the security council didn't want to spend money or send soldiers, and the moderates in the Rwandan government watched silently in order to save their prestige or for their security. In the end, a handful of UN soldiers (none from the West besides Dallaire and a few Canadians) and brave and generous Rwandans were the only ones that tried to help, despite the odds that were against them.
This book does a great job at informing us and in drawing lessons from this horror. In essence, it's a great work.
if you expect stories, be prepated to be disappointed.......2007-02-21
This is a great book, a must read to balance the voice of the UN Sceptics out there. The UN Peacekeeping Missions are not all incompetent, the system is. Who is the system? It's the Security Council with their various Committees. When things go right, the Security Council gets the praises, when things go wrong, people like Roméo Dallaire gets the blames.
There are many things UN Sceptics out there do not know but love to criticize i.e. the UN does not have its own troops, the UN Peacekeeping Mission's Military and Civilian Personnel rarely has control of the strategic operations or budget of a mission; it is the UN Security Council who does. Another very important must know-point, before criticizing the quality of the troops in a UN Mission; please please first ask the question "Where are the troops from those `high quality' countries?" When you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. When there's no political will to stop bad things from happening, the Rwandan genocide is what you get.
Roméo Dallaire wrote from first hand experience, for those who could not write out because of contractual obligation. Dallaire's account was a good picture of betrayal, naïveté, and international politics we all experience.
While Roméo Dallaire wrote briefly about the Mission 's Chief Administrative Officer who seemed indifferent to Dallaire's request for urgent requirement, he failed to understand another UN internal political undercurrent, nobody will stick their neck out, not then, not now .. because they get chopped.
Someone wrote that book has too many acronyms, people and jargons, too much frustrations .. well folks, welcome to the UN world. In-depth analysis? What's that? Never heard of. This book is REALITY. Period.
A log book, no consistent story flow, yes. An amazing book, yes.......2006-10-23
I have read the reviews of some others here below that this book didn't have a good story line and looked to much like a dairy of this former general.
I agree but that is what puts this book aside from the others. As I work at the UN I know the (basic) frustrations that the he is experienced in his fight and by giving us a cold, day to day, story of how things happened, he actually managed to capture the frustration and disapointment that he wants us to experience.
Most people say that it's a good review when they can not put a certain book down. For me this book was a completly different experience. I simply HAD to put it down, my frustration became to much.
I recommend this book to anyone, its a lesson in humanity. It might be frustrating, disgusting and everything in between, but it should be a mandatory reading for every human being.
Compelling.......2006-10-11
I just finished reading this book and found it both compelling and haunting. I couldn't put it down. If you are looking for a balcony analysis this is not for you but if on the other hand you want to know what it was like... no what it was really like, day to day, and step into the shoes of someone who was there then this is the book for you. Gen. Dallaire had access to and negotiated over and over again with the top leaders on both sides of the conflict and tells the story, the few triumphs and many failings of the groups in Rwanda, the member nations, and the UN itself, like no one else possibly could. My hats off to him for taking the time to tell this story, no doubt a painful one, in detail and for having given so much personally during that year of his life to save lives and minimize the deaths in Rwanda with the cards that were dealt him. Few, I believe would have persisted as long as he did trying to make a difference under similar conditions.

Creative fun when you are short of your own ideas.......2006-11-06
I could tell my little three-year-old boy was bored and needed some new stimulation. I used the ideas from The Little Hands Big Fun Craft Book and together with my boy created many colourful artworks including an aquarium, mail pouch, masks, flags and scrapbooks. My boy enjoyed cutting, pasting and coloring involved in the process and we together had a great time doing role plays afterwards. It is a good, easy-to-follow fun book for boys and girls!
Little Hands, Big Fun.......2006-07-19
This book is perfect for your little ones. My 2 1/2 year old daughter loved the crafts we have already done out of the book. I also work with children as my job and also at my church. I highly recommend this book to all you parents, grandparents, Aunt & Uncles, All care givers, and even the expecting parents. A+ Book.

Not bad, but still have space to improve.......2007-01-07
This book demo few examples to help reader to learn how to create a complete model from modeling to final render. I don't like this kind of teaching style. Hopefully. there will be some learning kit with complete learning process.
sincerely Yours.

Alright..........2007-10-10
This book is not as accurate as other ASL books out there... but it is alright for basic purposes; just be aware that some signs are signed English not ASL-- not a huge deal really.
Great Book very helpful information.......2007-07-16
This is a great book with tons of helpful information inside. I use it to improve my knowledge of ASL.
Thanks.
I would recommend........2007-04-02
Great service!!! The order was shipped the same day it was received. This is the book suggested by my ASL teacher as it is the one she refers to while teaching.
Clear illustrations, helpful grammar notes - Great all-round intro!.......2006-05-30
"Signing: How to Speak with your Hands" will serve many purposes on your signing bookshelf: it's a jam-packed dictionary, introductory grammar text, thorough guide to the non-manual aspects of signs, plus a little historical background thrown in for good measure.
Each dictionary-style entry not only depicts the sign clearly (both starting and ending handshapes), as most books do, but describes the handshape(s) and actions involved in text. PLUS, there is a written "hint" provided for many of the words defined (wherever possible, ie the more iconic or literal signs).
Example:
For EGG, the definition shows a picture of the start and end handshapes for the EGG sign. Text reads: "Begionning with the middle-finger side of the right hand across the index-finger side of the left "h" hand, drop the fingers down and apart from each other." The accompanying hint reads, "Hint: Breaking an egg into a bowl," which this motion resembles.
For SYRUP, the hint is "wiping syrup from the lips"; for FIRE, "shows flames rising."
This book groups words thematically into sections, not alphabetically, but rather in categories, like Health, Food, etc. Each section is a treasure-trove of signs, which may be overwhelming to the beginner, but which means the book will not quickly outlive its usefulness.
Each section begins with a few quick grammar points, and grammar is also integrated into the definitions wherever applicable. Grammar points cover topics like the signing space, symmetrical signs, placement and the nonmanual aspects of signing like repetition, emphasis and facial expression.
This book uses an extremely durable binding, which is perhaps its best feature, as you'll be referring to it again and again. It's built to last and will be a lasting addition to your ASL bookshelf for years to come.
NOTE: A previous reviewer has commented that this book over-emphasizes English grammar. I haven't seen that tendency in the book, however, it does perhaps under-emphasize ASL grammar. There is some discussion of noun-adjective order, and some discussion of use of tenses, but nothing I could find about ASL sentence order. I feel the book sidestepped this issue altogether so as to focus on imparting the basics of sign.
You will learn to speak with your hands, as the title suggests, however, if you're new to ASL, you'll probably need to move on eventually to a book that more comprehensively covers ASL sentence structure and "conversational" ASL.
Great basic ASL dictionary.......2006-01-29
Elaine Costello got it right when she made this dictionary and had it sectioned by topic instead of purely alphabetical. This book is a required text for my college level intro to ASL classes that I teach.
