    Book Description

Revealing and filled with professional insight, Robert M. Berns' best-selling book helps students understand the socialization process of children via the powerful conceptual framework of Urie Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Model of Human Development. Berns closely examines the interactive effects of family, childcare, school, peer groups, media, community, and societal factors (including culture, political ideology, economics, and technology) on the socialization of the child to vividly illustrate the concepts of the course and help students learn how the various aspects of a child's environment affect his or her development. Truly ideal for undergraduate students and anyone who works with children, this text underscores the immeasurable value in preparing the child with the ability to adapt to a changing world.

Great pocket book , i use my pocket books for clinicals. They take the place of the big textbooks, which makes my load 30 lbs lighter walking into clinicals.

3 out of 5 stars Good information, but not as thourough as I had hoped........2006-11-04

This was a really good review book and helpful while in the clinical environment, but it didn't have as much info as I needed to rely on it solely. There was still quite a bit of studying to be done!

3 out of 5 stars ok, not great.......2006-03-16

This handbook was pretty good, but I actually found it to be an unnecessary addition to my clinical experience. I certainly wouldn't say it was a "must have" like some of the other handbooks I've used.

5 out of 5 stars Did Not Read, Yet, But I KNOW!!.......2005-08-11

I purchased the Clinical Handbook for Medical Surgical Nursing, and it was a god-send! Therefore, I know that this book is well worth the purchase. It really narrowed down all that I needed for med-surg, so I know that anything by this company should be obtained by nursing students.

    Book Description

Authoritative yet accessible, Neurons to Neighborhoods presents the newest evidence about early brain development and how children learn to speak, think, get along with others, and regulate their behavior. It examines the effect of the surrounding context-family, child care, community-within which the child grows.

Are the early years a time of vulnerability or resilience? To what extent are our future prospects constrained by how well we navigate them? How can we get all children off to a good start in life? When should we worry? The committee provides a framework for approaching such vital questions and explores how scientists know what they know about childhood development.

This timely release will be important to all those who care about children and their families: policy makers, educators, researchers, program administrators, advocates, journalists, caregivers, and parents.

I received the book in in a timely fashion, and the book is in great condition.

    5 out of 5 stars super terrific.......2006-10-24

This book is a staple in the early childhood mental health field. It represents everything good in the promotion of social-emotional development in our society. Creating neurobiologically friendly environments for young children is a crossroad our society faces in an effort to have a positive impact on the mental health for our time. Implications for risk and resilience research contributions are included.

5 out of 5 stars Review of From Neurons to Neighbourhoods........2006-08-04

I purchased this book, because I am doing a Graduate Diploma in Maternal & Child Health in Australia. Many of our lecturers were taking quotes from this book and referring to Jack Schonkoff's remarks contained within, pertaining to new evidence on myelination and the importance of interaction and stimulation of small children and the relationship between this and brain growth. It is easy to read and I am confident that both the lay person and health professional alike will glean valuable insight. I find myself constantly referring to this book and know that this will have an effect on my future practice as a Maternal and Child Health Nurse.

    4 out of 5 stars Great resource!.......2006-03-27

An amazing breadth and depth of neuroscience and its implications for how we treat children. Must reading for anyone wishing to get beyond prejudice and rhetoric to the core of what needs to be done in public policy to protect and preserve childhood in modern America. Should be 5 stars, but now a little dated, although references are excellent and it's not hard to follow the themes into the most recent research.

The book was iin better condition than i expected, and it sent out the day after i ordered it.

This comprehensive text has set the standard for maternal-newborn nursing textbooks. New content and pedagogy have been incorporated that will prepare nursing students to be flexible, creative, and professional in the face of the trends toward home healthcare and community-based nursing, a growing multi-cultural population, and increasingly sophisticated technology. Address alternative healthcare delivery settings. Community in Focus boxes describe innovative community- based nursing programs in operation throughout the U.S. Home care and community-based nursing care are integrated throughout the text. The Women's Health Unit retains comprehensive coverage of women's health and is now revised to focus more on ambulatory, community-based nursing care. Critical Thinking in Practice Boxes use a case study format to encourage readers to solve problems and make decisions based on what they've learned. Critical Pathways provide readers with time-sequenced guides of anticipated care for healthy women and newborns and address the trend towards collaborative, outcome-driven managed care. Assessment Guides summarize assessment findings and help readers make distinctions between normal findings and variations. Research in Practice Boxes reflect the latest research findings for clinical practice. For anyone interested in learning about maternal/child nursing.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for NCC Maternal-Newborn certification.......2004-07-07

There were several recommended books to study for the NCC certification, but I found this one the most complete. It explained things more in-depth than most of the standard Maternal-Newborn books that I have read. The only caution I have is that the book was published in 1999, so some of our guidlines of care have changed in the last 5 years.

4 out of 5 stars It will cover all the basics, clearly and organized.......2001-01-12

This book is very well organized and the only problem i found with it was there were not many pictures to help define some of the material. It covers each topic in good depth and in a clear concise manner and i enjoyed this books clarity alot more than other ones i have read.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars For Children of Wealthy Parents.......2001-09-04

The book was enjoyable to read, but I think the authors must come from a much higher socioeconomic bracket than I do! I was hoping it could tell me how to ease my father's transition from his home to my home, but it concentrated only on moving to assisted living. And when I found that one of the items on their checklist for assisted living facilities was whether or not it offered horseback riding, I had to howl with laughter! Three meals a day and a place to hang your hat in assisted living costs $2500/month and up. I can't imagine what the places that offer horseback riding (and golf, etc.) charge. One thing I really appreciated about the book, however, was that the authors advised assisted living consumers to make sure that wheelchair users were not segregated from the rest of the assisted living community. I use a wheelchair, and was shocked and appalled at the news that some assisted living communities won't let wheelchair users into the dining room with the other residents because they feel it is "too depressing."

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read and cope with the issue of a life-changing move.......1999-06-25

I am a professional that works in the healthcare world and found the knowledge presented by the authors to be quality. They know this area--seniors and the angst of moving from a home and habits of years. Reading this first and then making the choices will be a much easier path to take for many people. Our healthcare system is sometimes complex and confusing and to have a resource such as this can help clear things up. There were some excellent tools provided along with good advice. I enjoyed reading it and will keep it as a reference when my husband and I have to think about this for our own parents. I gave my mother the book for her birthday--she loved it!

4 out of 5 stars Helpful and informative.......1998-12-05

Our book club, The Islanders, chose this book to read last month because so many of us are facing the problem of caring for our aging parents. The book is well written and humorous, and full of important information for anyone who is concerned about providing a safe home for their parents. We all agreed that we wished the book touched more on the specific problems of dealing with Alzheimers and dementia, since many of our parents will be faced with these problems eventually. Also, the authors mentioned nursing home insurance, but didn't recommend any particular policy or company. There are so many confusing come-ons in the marketplace, that it would have been a great help if there was some information on comparing and evaluating policies. We felt we learned a lot about what we will be facing in caring for our parents, but would love to read more about insurance policies to cover nursing home services.

4 out of 5 stars Pragmatic approach also includes the emotional sub-text.......1998-12-03

This book is certainly a practical how-to manual on a subject, that would be all to easy to not consider. However, when the inevitable reality intrudes, this book allows you to begin to address an uncomfortable subject; in a very non-threatening, calm, and clear fasahion. While it is probably worth its purchase alone for its organizational approach and practical check lists. Its humor, warmth and a sense of the authors passion for thier subject matter made it for me, priceless. As an individual, who recalls only yesterday it seems, requesting the family car with some trepidation; hoping to cage a free tank of gas and not be given a curfew .The prospect of again asking for the keys, for an entirely diffrent reason was very disheartning. At least now I have some sense on how to approach these subjects with everyones dignity intact, and the continued respect of my parents. Additionaly, this book will have you consideringhow you will avoid all of these complications with your own family, when you become the subjects in the books title.

4 out of 5 stars This book is well written and informative........1998-11-03

This is not only funny to read but well written and informative. I can't wait to move my aging mother following the Robbins/Morse method. I hope these two are working on another project to print. They turn a sad and serious situation which seems impossible into a can do, workable and quite possible solution.

    Book Description

The first step forward in working with today's youth is to create a dialogue, and that is exactly what this exciting new book does. It helps you provide opportunities for young people to open up and explore their feelings through theatre, offering a safe place for them to air their views with dignity, respect, and freedom.

The purpose of this manual is to provide a clear look at the process and specifics involved in the Hope Is Vital interactive theatre techniques. The organization is sequential, providing a blueprint for creating a workable plan. Beginning with warm-up exercises and bridging activities, the process moves forward to improvisational scenework, where students actually replace characters in the stories. It is at this point that young people engage in their own mini-theatre and look at choices, strategies, and communication.

Teachers will want to read this book. Counselors will want to read this book. Community leaders will want to read this book. It is useful in any group setting or as a tool for outreach.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for Elementary drama & socialization skills.......2002-11-05

I work as a Art Focus Drama teacher for K-7 students who come from various socio-economic backgrounds and home lives. I found this book a very valuable resource, especially for students who have a difficult time with issues of trust, language, and ensemble work. It is great to have a resource that contains detailed exercises within a logical framework, that not only works, but explains itself in a manner that even classroom teachers, with no drama experience whatsoever, can accomplish.

A highly suggest this for teachers who want to use drama as a way to improve communication and explore problem solving in a new, creative, and very effective way.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, detailed guide for joy filled work.......1999-06-18

This book provided a guide for Becca Kirsch and I to work with a group of high school students. The activities described in the book build on each other and it was inspiring to watch the students' enthusiasm and discovery through the process. Michael Rohd is correct when he says that the activities help people to get to know each other in new ways. I think that the interaction that comes from participating in these theater games is crucial to help build new ways of communicating and problem solving.

    5 out of 5 stars A "cannot-do without-it" book for youth and community worker.......1999-04-28

I came across this book in February 1998 during a one-week training workshop given personally by Michael Rohd in Helsinki (Finland). I consider this material valuable and anyone who works with young people or youth workers should get it. I have used this book when giving training to youth and community workers. Needless to say, I had to adapt some of the exercises according to the local context. I would recommend this book to all those who want to be part of a revolution.

5 out of 5 stars Improvisational Theatre as an Aid to Society.......1999-02-07

Michael Rohd is currently doing exciting work across the country, using improvisational theater techniques to connect with young people and communities in ways that echo Paul Sills' original intention when he founded The Compass Players and Second City: to connect viscerally with the community to create a dialogue for social change. As Jeffrey Sweet documented in his book "Something Wonderful Right Away," the original members of Compass and Second City (Mike Nichols, Elaine May, Severn Darden, Shelley Berman, Barbara Harris, Alan Arkin, etc.) were quick to pick up on the disparity between Sills' goal and the reality of their set-up. Their audience tended to be the insulated academic populace connected to the University of Chicago, whereas Sills was hoping to connect with the community at large. They simply weren't playing to the people Sills wanted to reach, and the people Sills wanted to reach were not coming to this coffeehouse. In Michael Rohd's hands, Paul Sills' work is being perpetuated. He has been taking the practices of improvisational theatre on the road, working with students, adults and teachers to create an open forum for dealing with and discussing today's complex issues. His book is a clear, tightly written manual describing a catalogue of theater games that are fun, creative, joyful, instantly accessible, that take workshop members on a clear arc from learning to trust each other to sharing to creating improvised scenes, all in an amazingly brief time span. For those in the Theatre Industry, Rohd's book is the best description of what goes into the making of an ensemble company and the creation of the Group Mind since Del Close's book, "Truth in Comedy."

5 out of 5 stars Great for Homeschooling.......2003-04-18

We came across this book in our local library and so glad that we did. We are a homeschooling family and have found this book to be very helpful and interesting in comparing the past with the present. The set up of the book is wonderful too. It tells a story of settler family. Then it gives historical facts and interesting pictures to go along with the story. Great book, hope the library has the rest of the series. It makes learning history so much more interesting. My 2nd grade daughter is not a reader and she loves when we sit together and read and talk about Emily and John.

    4 out of 5 stars I recommend this book!.......2000-06-04

What a lovely book for learning about the past! I would recommend it for readers 6-10 rather than an older age group. Simple stories about the daily life of two 19th century children, a boy and a girl, are interesting and easy to follow. It also offers many opportunities to discuss and compare pioneer times with contemporary life. A good book for teachers grades 1-4.

5 out of 5 stars Good for those in city also.......2006-09-17

A good heart is essential but not enough in rehabilitation work. This book thus gives readers the basic understanding of people with different kinds of disabilities, enabling us to work well with them. What's more, the numerous heartfelt photos show us that if we can get things right, people with disabilities can enjoy a joyful life.
What's more, the author is so kind that he even encourages readers to xerox the content if necessary provided that not everyone can afford buying a book.

5 out of 5 stars "a bible in rural india'.......2003-10-03

I spoke with an Occupational therapist who says this book was like a bible to her when she did a fieldwork session in rural India~ It was highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars I used the book and found it to be very helpful to families........1999-06-30

As a former PCV in The West Indies, I used this book for ideas to share with families who had special needs children. It has many low cost alternatives to equipment that is often too costly for families without resources. The book also addresses the need for a handicapped child to do useful work in the family unit, something that is often forgotten. Self esteem can be taught if a child is given tasks, however small. I had to leave the book at the PeaceCorps Library when I left, and think that no Early Interventionist, OT or PT should be without a copy. A copy in Spanish and a copy in English would be a great asset.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful book for health care workers........1999-03-12

I'm a pediatric physical therapist who works with many people from Mexico and Latin American countries. This book (I often use the spanish version, also on Amazon.com) contains very useful information that I can share with families to help them better understand their disabled child's conditions. It has many creative methods of building equipment for little to no money that are important in our days of managed care.

There are some conditions, like polio, that are uncommon here in America. However, some of my imigrent families have children that have had polio. I used this book to make up for gaps in my own training. In fact, I've learned something useful from almost any page. This book belongs in the car of any therapist, (PT, OT) or person who works with disabled imigrent children. I highly reccomend it.
