Must read for trumpet players.......2007-10-22
All you want to know about the trumpet. Not a method book, but a great reference book. It gives much information that method books leave out. Recommend for all trumpet players.
Trumpet Book is Very Comprehensive.......2007-02-17
This book is the most thorough treatment of the various aspects of trumpet playing that I have seen. Very informative and helpful. Even my current teacher, who has played with the Metropolitan Opera (NYC), was impressed.
Outstanding Book.......2006-12-01
I played trumpet in high school, rock guitar professionally for ten years and studied piano for as long. After reacquainting myself with some CD's from my youth I was inspired to pick up the trumpet again. Looking for a guide to get me off on the right foot I came across this book. It covers about every topic you can think of concerning the trumpet. It's an easy enjoyable read packed with trumpet history, instruction, recommended CD listening and much more. He deals with classical music as well as jazz. The examples in the book have mp3 files that can be accessed on the author's website. I think any level of player can find something of interest in here.

Good Overview.......2006-02-24
For many of us, the Civil Rights era happened when we were too young to understand. This is a good overview of the man and his times. Many people who were just names before, became people to me.
Although, I believe King made some serious mistakes, I understand for the first time why he should have a national holiday. I had no idea he was such an impressive person. Keep in mind, this book was written by a serious historian; not just someone who wished to canonize King.
A blueprint for change.......2005-02-05
As a student activist during my college years, I was introduced to this book by one of many mentors. They said that this was a detailed account of how Dr. King and his soldiers pushed forward their agenda for change in America. It was more than that. It was a powerful testament of the conviction of Dr. King and the gameplan for dealing with racist America. He did not work alone but his analysis of each situation proved to be very timely and accurate. Later on, of course, his effectiveness lost a little of its punch but you can not change the success that came from his branch of the Movement. Stephen Oates so elequently noted the techniques and strategies used during the turbulant sixties. It gave me information on how to handle the media, the powers that be, other members of my allies and prepare for possible backstabbers. That was my reason for reading the book. However, I got SSSOOO much more.
Martin Luther King Jr. was a revolutionary. His faith in God was the driving force behind in nonviolent stance. His studies of Gandhi and Martin Luther further solidified his position. Destined for greatness from the time of his birth, MLK was always preparing himself (and being prepared) for that big moment. He was intelligent, charismatic and thorough in approach to segregation. A family man, a minister, a scholar and an activist. This book is a good starting point for not just learning about King but understanding him. He IS (not was) bigger than "I Have A Dream", bigger than boycotts, bigger than nonviolence. Thanks to Oates and this masterpiece, he can be celebrated for what he was, an instrument of change and the Prince of Peace.
Masterful balanced biography.......2004-05-17
Stephen Oates writes a masterful biography of one of the pivotal figures of the twentieth century. Today we view Martin Luther King Jr. as a saint, and a model of what the human spirit can achieve. In his day, he was viewed by many in the South with fear, hatred and loathing.
It is easy to view this situation in hindsight, and assume that everyone was just ignorant. Oates writes of the complex history, the battles within and outside "the movement" and how divided the nation was at the time. Oates also does not shirk away from many of Martin Luther King's personal weaknesses. In this sense, he humanizes the great leader, instead of canonizes him.
In the end, I am left with three conclusions:
1 - Martin Luther King Jr. indeed found a way to overcome hatred with love, and in doing so helped America avoid a race war.
2 - The message of civil rights was both religeous and personal. Despite today's views of the right being the party of religeon, in his day the southern liberal movement was galvanized in the church.
3 - Despite this, he was a flawed individual. His human weakness does not diminish his accomplishment.
The book is not light reading. Read it. Let it soak in. And comprehend.
The Life of Martin Luther King Jr........2002-05-07
This book was about a big part of our United States History. It was about Civil Rights. Martin Luther King Jr. was a big Civil Rights activist in the 1960's. I learned quite a bit about Martin Luther Kings's life that I did not know before I had read this book.
Martin Luther King was one of the most important people of our country's history. He fought for African-Americans Civil Rights. He was a very determined man, who was alwyas put into jail numerous times for his "peaceful protests". He had given several speeches as well. The author of this book is Stephen B. Oates. He is a good writer, who has written 16 books. He has also won many literary prizes such as the Christopher Award. This book is very well written. He clearly tells the story as if he had experienced it. His strenghts include: Getting actual quotes from the people that were important in this time, having pictures of Mr. King and others, and having footnotes that explained the story more in depth. I can not think of many weaknesses that he has. However, the book was long but I did not expect it to be short due to the importance of the topic. I would reccomend this book to many people. The reason why is because it tells you in depth stories about Martin Luther King Jr. and his life, but it does have profanity and innappropriate content for young children. All in all, this was a very good biography and taught me many things.
Important book about a hero.......2001-11-07
This is the best biography I've read, not only about King but overall. Oates does a fine job balancing between illuminating details that help make King accessible to the reader without getting bogged down in this detail. Likewise, this balance provides a fine introduction to the Civil rights movement. (I don't consider a weakness of Let the Trumpets Sound that Oates doesn't dwell on certain of Kings weaknesses, as he instead focuses on King's message and actions; again, I think Oates concentrates on the myriad aspects of King's life, and the movement, that truly were important.)
Anybody trying to learn more about the Civil rights Movement should read this (along with such books the Autobiograpohy of Malcolm X and any of a number of books about Gandhi).

General John J. Pershing may not be as honored as American military heroes Washington, Lee, Grant, and MacArthur, but he outranked them all: He's the only man ever to hold the rank of six-star general. And he certainly earned each one, with a career spanning from the final frontier wars of the 18th century to his leadership in the Spanish-American War in 1898 to his pursuit of Mexican bandit Pancho Villa in 1916. Pershing is best remembered, of course, for commanding the American Expeditionary Force in the First World War, which helped bring the conflict to a successful conclusion for the Allies. Gene Smith is a skilled biographer with an eye for detail and a knack with anecdotes. His Pershing--often misunderstood as a cold and brutal character--comes alive on the pages of Until the Last Trumpet Sounds.

"Taps" for an American Hero.......2006-10-13
Gene Smith's "Until the Last Trumpet Calls" (1998 Paperback) tells the life story of General John J. Pershing. It is well documented with reviewing personal correspondences, eyewitness interviews, several black and white photos, and extensive (8 pages) endnotes.
From his birth in 1860, through his days at West Point (class of 1886), to his various US Cavalry assignments across the American west and the early 20th century Pacific, to his leading the American Expeditionary Forces in World War 1 (WW1), till his death in 1948, John Pershing was well-respected, and often feared, icon determined to perform his duty. Pershing moved slowly through the Army ranks until he met Teddy Roosevelt. After their Spanish American War acquaintance Captain Pershing (only a Captain after 16 years!) was catapulted into a history-making career. By the end of the Great War Pershing achieved 6 stars as General of the Armies (unique to American history)!
Smith tells Pershing family celebrations and tragedies, it acquaintances with future history makers, and the General's "Americans fight as Americans" philosophy during WW1. Readers learn about Pershing's mentoring George Patton, George Marshall, and many more. We hear of his close WW1 friendship with France's Marshal Petain (who became the chief voice in the Nazi-Vichy government of World War 2, to Pershing's horror). The General was firmly and verbally anti-Kaiser in 1915 and anti-Nazi in 1940.
Smith closes the book with interesting chapters about "Black Jack" Pershing's (an appellation from his pre WW1 days commanding an African American Army division in Texas) son's and grandsons' careers. Each respective had his army career in World War 2, Cold War Europe, and Viet Nam (the youngest grandson was killed during the 1968 Tet Offensive). Unfortunately, General Pershing had no great-grandchildren. The book ends with a feeling of "Taps" for an influential 20th century American family.
Although Smith tends towards run-on sentences and the occasional sentence fragment this 320-page book's conversational style makes it an easy read. It is recommended to all military historians, US Cavalry buffs, World War 1 students, and 20th century Americana aficionados.
What was Pershing's military and political philosophy?.......2006-09-05
The facts of Pershing's life are interesting: he participated in the Indian Wars, led soldiers in the Spanish American war in Cuba alongside Teddy Roosevelt, was a central figure in the occupation of the Philippines, served as commanding officer in the manhunt for Pancho Villa, and -- of course -- was the commander in chief of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. Apparently, he was an extremely capable military man with an eye for detail and unparalleled military discipline. He overcame an unspeakable personal tragedy -- the death of his wife and daughters in a fire. Also impressive: from a modest Missouri upbringing, he was entirely self-made.
But a great biography does more than recite facts about its subject. It brings the reader inside his mind, and gives historical context to his decisions. In this regard, this book is a failure. The reader does not come away with the impression that Pershing was a great military strategist, like Lee or MacArthur. In fact, it is hard to decipher what was Pershing's military philosophy. Neither does the reader come away with the impression that Pershing's thinking about the great events of his time had any impact on the era's political decisionmakers. There is only one exception: it is clear that Pershing saw the United States as a full partner with its European allies in World War I, rather than as a mere source of personnel to replenish the dwindling ranks of French and British infintrymen. This contribution was significant.
The World War I era is one of the most fascinating and under-appreciated in recent Western history. The war itself was one of the terrible tragedies of all time, and it set the stage for the worldwide economic expansion of the twenties, depressionof the thirties, and the Second World War. It's too bad that this book sheds so little light on one of the most important figures of that era.
Not bad........2006-05-09
Some of the criticism of other readers is right, but this was obviously not intended to be a definitive, complete biography of this historical figure. It tells you much more than an encyclopedia article but presumably less than the two-volume biography by another author. The view is mainly of the private side of this man's life, which was necessarily dominated by its public side.
Good, As Far As It Goes..........2004-08-25
This book is a good beginning to any study of John J. Pershing, but there isn't enough "meat on the bones". Pershing led quite a life, and really needs a thorough, well-researched bio, but this isn't it. Oh, it's quite readable, and if you don't know much about Blackjack, it will give you good, basic information, but it will leave you wanting a biography with more depth. And the writing style! The author uses sentences that are more like laundry lists...on and on and on...Somebody give this man a comma, a semi-colon, a period, and then teach him how to use them!
Read another book about Pershing!.......2003-07-28
This is neither a history of the period nor a biography. It is a collection of quotations and anecdotes, that appear to have been taken from the personal papers of John J. Pershing, that are on file at the Library of Congress, not an unbiased source. I got as far as through the period on Pershing's frontier and Philippine service and put it down. It is a shallow treatment that reads like a history for young children. If someone is really interested in the era and the man, read Frank Vandiver's book " Black Jack: The Life and Times of John J. Pershing" in two volumes, published in 1977. A book Smith cites, Donald Smythe's "Guerilla Warrior: The Early Life of John J. Pershing" (1973) is not too bad, nor is "Black Jack Pershing" by Richard O'Connor (1961). None of these are hostile treatments, and all are well written. Pershing was an able and brave Army officer, but so were many others of the era. But Pershing was the only one to go from Captain to Brigadier General despite opposition of the Army command, and this was not solely due to his ability. His smartest move was marrying the daughter of Senator Warren, one of the shrewder political operators of the time, and one who, although a Republican, had equal entree with Wilson as well as Roosevelt and Taft. Warren was Pershing's guardian angel. If you are older than 12, pass this book up and read one of the others.

Just how close are we to the Rapture of the Church? Do events taking place in the Middle East and around the world have prophetic importance? In his latest book, Sound the Trumpets, Jimmy DeYoung examines these question and explains just how near the rapture could possibly be. By comparing four trends from prophetic scripture to current events taking place in the world today, Jimmy shows that the stage is set, every actor is in place and the curtain is about to go up in the end time scenario put forth in the Bible.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book About Biblical Prophecy.......2003-10-13
Dr. Jimmy De Young has done an outstanding job of explaining some of the more difficult end-time prophecies from the Bible. Through extensive research, he has determined which modern countries correspond with the Biblical countries of Moab, Assyria, Babylonia, and others, and the role they play in the preparation for the second coming of Christ. He also explains how the orthodox Jews are making elaborate preparations for rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem, training priests for their Levitical duties, and in other various ways, fulfilling prophecies for the coming of the Messiah. For both Christians and Jews, the book is an inspiring message filled with hope and assurance that the day is soon coming when "In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump; for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." (1 Cor. 15:52)

John Mortimer is perhaps best known for his beloved books featuring Horace Rumpole, that irreverent barrister and "great defender of muddled and sinful humanity." When he isn't skewering the British legal system, however, Mortimer keeps busy with the Rapstone Chronicles, set in the rough-and-tumble world of English politics. Titmuss Regained and Paradise Postponed followed the fortunes of cunning and avaricious Tory MP Leslie Titmuss as he rose to the heights of power under Margaret Thatcher, then was laid low when her government fell. At the beginning of this third novel in the series, the deposed Lord Titmuss has retired to his country home to lick his wounds and plot revenge against his own party, which he holds responsible for the Iron Lady's defeat. Then a local Conservative MP dies while performing autoerotic acrobatics in his swimming pool, and Titmuss seizes the main chance. He offers to secretly help the idealistic young Labour candidate, Terry Flitton, win the seat. The first indication that Flitton is treading dangerous ground comes during their initial meeting, when Titmuss suggests he deny his socialist leanings until after the election, and Terry protests, "It wouldn't be true to my beliefs."
"Of course it would." His Lordship sighed and rose wearily to his feet as though about to explain an obvious point to a particularly thick House of Commons. "You'd be doing your beliefs the greatest possible service. You'd be giving them the chance of a lifetime. Then, if you beat Wee Willie, and your party wins the next general election, you can come up red as roses. Be as bloody Socialist as you like!"
If the road to hell is paved with good intentions, the path to power is simply littered with them. Before long the young idealist is compromising his ideals right and left and Titmuss is well on the way to achieving his revenge. Nobody has a better grasp of the absurdities and transgressions of British political life than John Mortimer, and The Sound of Trumpets is a delicious tour through the cutthroat world of electioneering told with scathing wit and a merciless eye. --Alix Wilber
Book Description
The Sound of Trumpets is the third installment in The Rapstone Chronicles, and John Mortimer's social savvy dazzles once again. With the literary brilliance of Anthony Trollope and the savage wit of Christopher Buckley, Mortimer skewers political friends and foes with equal grace. In this cunning portrait of the British class system and parliamentary politics, it is the new Labour government that bears the brunt of Mortimer's clever jabs. The merciless, avaricious antihero of Titmuss Regained and Paradise Postponed, Leslie Titmuss MP, has been deposed and the excess and greed of the 1980s have vanished. Paradise is here--in the form of Terry Flitton, a deadly accurate incarnation of the new centrist politician only too familiar on both sides of the Atlantic. Under Flitton's reign, a whole new world free of class distinction and full of biting, mischievous social comedy emerges.

PUNGENCY AND PATHOS IN THIS SATIRE.......2005-05-06
If there is one bipartisan voice in the darkly comic The Sound of Trumpets, it is that of the author, John Mortimer. With ripostes at the ready, his barbs are egalitarian as he mercilessly skewers both Labourites and Tories in this highly entertaining take on English political life.
Following Paradise Postponed and Titmuss Regained, the first two volumes in Mr. Mortimer's Rapstone Chronicles, The Sound Of Trumpets showcases the author at the peak of his acerbic wit, and reintroduces readers to Leslie Titmuss, MP, now a bitter, self-absorbed retiree who has little interest in his son or grandchildren, "whose names eluded him but to whom he sent modest cheques at Christmas with strict instructions that the money should be invested and not spent on computer games, C.D.s, rollerblades or any such unprofitable trifles."
What Lord Titmuss does have is an appetite for revenge upon those he considers traitorous and a gift for Machiavellian plotting.
When the local Tory MP meets an untimely and unseemly end (floating face down with a ping-pong ball in his mouth), young, ambitious Labourite Terry Flitton is nominated to stand for the now vacant seat representing the long Tory held districts of Hartscombe and Worsfield South.
A former employee of S.C.R.A.P. (The Society for Rural and Arboreal Protection), Terry is married to beautiful Kate, who is as devoted to saving the world as she is to vegetarianism. Terry is both charismatic and foolhardy. Upon meeting Agnes, the attractive fifty-year-old proprietress of a Socialist pamphlet strewn bookstore, he begins an affair with her.
Agnes sees Terry as one who will work for a Utopian world; Lord Titmuss sees him as a puppet to be manipulated.
Seeking retribution for supposed sins by his fellow conservatives, Lord Titmuss secretly masterminds the young Labour candidate's campaign. It is an uphill battle as the zealous hopeful becomes caught up in a B-list fox hunt, although he is pro animal rights; inadvertently appears soft on criminal offenders during a radio interview; and is found en deshabille with Agnes.
As a last resort, in a scene that hilariously punctures the pompous, Lord Titmuss the man who has been "the heart and soul of the Conservative Party" blends the wisdom of the Book of Ecclesiastes and the skewed logic that it is time for his party to lose as he delivers a public endorsement of Terry Flitton.
The crowd is stunned: "If Lord Titmuss had stripped and done a full frontal dance on the town hall steps they would not have been so astounded or, indeed, embarrassed." Nonetheless, they are obedient and Flitton wins the election handily.
However, the devilish Lord Titmuss does not rest. He mapped the young politicos heady rise; now he engineers a precipitous fall.
Mr. Mortimer's portraits of English eccentrics are unparalleled from Lord Titmuss's housekeeper, the fussbudget Mrs. Ragg who "either mothered him or, in moments of wild embarrassment, tried to flirt with him" to the acolytes surrounding Terry. They have their list of undesirable activities: "Selling alcoholic lemonade, catapults, war-like toys and bows and arrows of a certain size would be dealt with by imprisonment, as would holding raves, hang-gliding and disseminating books containing racially biased stories to persons of a tender age."
There is both pungency and pathos in the author's satire. The Sound Of Trumpets may be the final volume in this trilogy, but with John Mortimer one always hopes for more.

political compromise receives a predictable poke.......1999-05-25
I loved Paradise Postponed. Even the name Leslie Titmuss makes me smile. Leslie reappears here, but the attention focuses on a wimpy candidate whom it's hard to root for. All seemed a bit tired, even the humor.
