This is a book that tells a story that is little known beyond the ranks of the military. It should be known by all as it is one of the things that has maintained our freedom thru the years. The book is well written and to the point.

I believe the following quote best speaks to Carlos Hathcock; the Marine; the man.
" The only guide to a man is his conscience; the only shield to his memory is the rectitude and sincerity of his actions. It is very imprudent to walk through like without this shield, because we are so often mocked by the failure of our calculation; but with this shield, however the fates may play, we march always in the ranks of honor".
I felt compelled to write the above after reading the dual 1-star posts from "a reader" who basically called Mr. Hathcock a liar, fraud and phony.
He starts out with one line of praise then basically says Mr. Hathcock was a phony and his story a con job.
Of course he offers no facts or evidence to support his claims.
Just another who disrespects and spits on those who have served; are serving and will serve.
He should be ashamed.
You sir/"a reader", will never walk among the ranks of honor.

Fills in lots of the details the Marine Sniper leaves out. Read Marine Sniper first then this and you will have to complete story. There is some repition but not enough to bore you.
Solid Writing, Exceptional Story, Enough Said.......2005-07-06
I purchased this book as I have always been interested in the stories behind war. I am not very interested in the war itself, but rather the stories of the people who fight the wars.
This book is a biography of Carlos Hathcock. Being born after the Vietnam War, the name typically would have meant nothing to me except I ran into the son of one of Hathcock's "trainees" and Hathcock's name always stuck with me.
Hathcock was just another Marine in Vietnam. He was an elite marksman with a rifle, yet this was ignored and upon arriving in Vietnam, Hathcock was assigned to a desk job in an MP battalion as a watch commander. After serving as an MP for a while, a "freak" occurrence required Hathcock to use his marksmanship skills to take out an enemy shooter who had attacked the base. The enemy solider was to be taken out at his village. From there, Hathcock's career rapidly progresses into becoming a sniper. The book covers Hathcock's legendary career as a sniper. During two tours of duty, Hathcock racked up almost 100 confirmed kills and numerous other unconfirmed kills. Hathcock became so good at what he did, the enemy offered a $20,000 bounty to the person who killed Hathcock or his partner. The enemy formulated several special groups and executed some brilliant strategies to try and take out the "white feather".
My meager words could never do justice to the author. Reading the book is like watching a poetic war drama. The eloquence the author uses in this book is mesmerizing. The scenes are described in such vivid detail, I felt like I was there, hearing bullets buzz above my head, listening to my heart pounding, watching the blood of an unfortunate soldier soak into the earth, as I see the person next to me squeeze the trigger to silence the enemy soldier's rifle. The stories in the book range from humorous, victorious, heroic, then to disheartening. To the people who are unfamiliar with Hathcock's story, the end of Hathcock's days in Vietnam is shocking, but not surprising. I was most impressed by the humanity Hathcock expressed. He never looked at it as killing an enemy solder, rather he saw his job as saving the lives of American soldiers. I also found some of the stories in the book familiar, as I recognized bits and pieces I've seen in movies over the years (probably the most well-known being the "scope" episode, which is in the movie "Saving Private Ryan". I'm guessing this is based on Hathcock's story).
This is by far one of the best books I have read that cover the life of a soldier. I would highly recommend this book to people interested in the life of a sniper or are interested in soldiers of the Vietnam War.

And well done, Charles Henderson! They say that one's first book is always going to be a preparation for the second, and the book, Marine Sniper, that I read about Carlos Hathcock, just warmed me up for this second go-round of Hathcock adventures. In a way the two books were very similar, since it says in the introduction that they were carved out of the same UR-manuscript and written before Carlos' death five years ago.
SILENT WARRIOR gives a deeper perspective on some of the events and personalities depicted in MS93CK. The drawback for me is that I think to give the book more weight, Henderson resorts to some dubious devices to pump up the volume, including imagining what Carlos was thinking at such and such a time, and also frankly the worst offenders of the story, APACHE and PHILIP METZ, are turned into super-villainous caricatures that Ian Fleming might have dreamed up to torture James Bond. If they really existed, and Carlos killed them, good for him. But the writing is so over the top it's hard to be sure.
This would be a good introduction to the life and death of a great Marine, but we already had the other book which is also a good introduction, so it's a draw.

The story of the 7,5000 warriors who guard Qin, China's first emperor.......2006-03-21
While on vacation in China, Jane O'Connor visited the thousands of life-sized terracotta warrior statues discovered near the tomb on an emperor in northern China. She was inspired to find out more about both the army of ghostly gray warriors and the man who had ordered their creation. But as O'Connor read everything available about the first emperor and his buried army she discovered that a book on the subject had not yet been written for children. "The Emperor's Silent Army: Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China" rectifies that mistake.
In March 1974 three farmers digging a well near the city of Xian in Lintong County of the People's Republic of China, discovered the clay head of a "pottery man." Neither the farmers nor the archaeologists who arrived to investigate the figure had ever seen anything similar to the life-like figure, and where astounded to discover dozens, and then hundreds and finally thousands of these terracotta figures. When the excavation was done, an army of 7,500 soldiers and horses has been uncovered (so far), after being buried for more than 2,200 years. The life-size figures weighed as much as four hundred pounds each and wore knee-length robes, armor made from small iron "fish scales," and elaborate topknot hairdos (the low-ranking infantrymen did not wear armor). The figures stand at attention and archaeologists also found the hundreds of real bronze swords, daggers, battle-axes, and arrowheads, these silent warriors were carrying.
After sharing the story of the discovery of the figures, O'Connor tells the story of Qin Shihuang, the divine Son of Heaven, who was the first emperor or China. Qin was a paranoid tyrant, and fearing that grave robbers would loot the treasures in his tomb after he died. O'Connor talks about the measures Qin took to protect his final resting place, which included the terracotta figures, stationed in underground trenches, less than a mile from the tomb. The details about the figures, as to why they do not wear helmets or shields and why they are facing east, are quite interesting. There is logic to their arrangement that O'Connor is able to explain, a well as the difference between the 350 chariot horses and the more than 100 cavalry horses. There are more than forty full-color photographs in the book, which help to distinguish between the different types of warriors. The only disappointment here is that there are not more such photographs.
One of the most amazing things about the figures is that of the two thousand unearthed at the time O'Connor's book was published, no two had been discovered to be the same. The figures represent different ages, different parts of China, and even different temperaments. A colored computer image shows how one of the figures would have looked originally when it was painted. Another fascinating section has to do with modern artisans making replicas, following the techniques of 2,200 years ago, to help archeologists understand how the original figures were created. The final chapters of the book are devoted to what it was like inside the Emperor's tomb, where the body may be wearing a jade funeral suit (the government has no intention of actually opening the tomb and looking, but other tombs have been opened in the past to five us some ideas), and Qin's legacy, which is mainly the first Great Wall of China that he had made with a workforce of half a million slave laborers working for a dozen years. However, it would be Qin's silent army that is probably most responsible for what immortality the first emperor possesses today. Seeing them in person would be an unforgettable experience, and O'Connor's book does an excellent job of making that impression on her readers, young and old alike.
Hidden arrows, Poisoned King, and Buried Treasure!.......2002-11-15
Rich with exciting historical details, The Emperor's Silent Army: Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China by Jane O'Connor offers a well-researched book that tantalizes the reader with tales of a poisoned King, a camouflaged dead body, and a booby-trapped tomb. The targeted audience of ages 9-12 will thrill with the adventure while simultaneously profiting from their newfound knowledge of China's first Emperor, Qin Shihuang, and his war and burial customs. Heavily strewn with color photographs, computer images, maps, drawings, and charts, the book easily captures interest and successfully holds attention with its succinct wording and short chapters that directly complement the images.
Jane O'Connor's career spanning roles as editor-at-large, president of mass market children's books at Penguin, and prolific author is crowned by her most recent gem, The Emperor's Silent Army: Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China. Realizing that no children's books had thoroughly documented the world wonder discovered in China, O'Connor successfully fills the void. This book is a must for any library!
The only negative aspect is that the book fails to be part of a larger history series since once the book is read, the reader will want to read more. The detailed bibliography and author's note provide a scope for further reading on the Terracotta Warriors, but readers will long to learn the same concise and tantalizing information on other subjects as well! Hopefully, Jane O'Connor will follow with more books to engage children and adults since The Emperor's Silent Army: Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China masterfully explores its subject.

Modesitt writ large.......2006-11-03
Modesitt has a style of writing and a type of character that he has successuly spun and respun into many different books. This series follows the mode of the others. Everything one loves about Modesitt's writing is there- good sci-fi cowboy adventures in space. Everything one hates about Modesitt's writing is there- formulaic writing, longer sentences that this one, and hammering on current populist themes (how mankind ruined the earth and, unless controlled closely, will despoil the universe in it uncaring lust for more materialism.. blah blah blah). Unbelievely long and tedious, but then again, I knew that going in, and I still read Modesitt!
Restoring the Green Hills of Earth.......2004-06-12
The Forever Hero (1988) is an omnibus edition of this trilogy. It includes Dawn for a Distant Earth, The Silent Warrior, and In Endless Twilight.
Sometime in the distant future, Earth has achieved the stars and colonized many planets. However, the home world continued to suffer from ecological problems caused by wars and pollution. When the ecollapse finally occurred, Earth became a hellhole of poisoned land and sea, savage weather, and toxic ground fogs. The population dropped from billions to a few thousands.
The Earth colonies formed a Federation and later an Empire and somehow lost contact with Earth. After countless years, an Imperial scout rediscovered the planet and the ISS Torquina was sent to survey the world. They found a wasteland of scattered ruins, mostly uninhabited and almost uninhabitable. The remaining animals were generally inedible due to toxin levels, as were many plants.
In Dawn for a Distant Earth (1987), the Torquina finds two populations on the planet: shambletowners and devilkids. The Torquina crew captures an injured devilkid and tests his abilities. He is extremely strong with a high intelligence and a blinding fast reaction time. The boy takes the name MacGregor Corson Gershwin and is educated as an Imperial, becoming an ISS officer and pilot. He returns to Old Earth as a flitter pilot supporting the scientists studying the ravaged world.
In The Silent Warrior (1987), Gershwin turns down the opportunity to become Commandant of the new Recorps and instead leaves Old Earth to take command of an underpowered and overtasked cruiser, the Fleurdilis, to make initial contact with a previously unknown alien species. Later, he is assigned as the Commander of an underutilized and obsolescent refitting center and salvage yard. He marries Allison and they have a son, Corson. Gershwin also becomes active as the trustee of the OER Foundation founded by Caroljoy, his first lover.
In the third novel, In Endless Twilight (1988), Gershwin contributes to a revolution on Byzania to protect his house trees project. The success of that mission leads him to concentrate on psywar, preparing the populace for a radical change of viewpoint. The Empire finally decides to eliminate Gershwin, but they can't find him. However, they do move against the OER Foundation.
This trilogy may be prequels to the Ecolitan Matter series. Many of the planet names are the same, the governmental institutions are similar, and the technology is comparable. However, the connection, if any, is never made clear.
One of the inconsistancies is the Imperial capital. In this trilogy, New Augusta is a planet, whereas in the Ecolitan series New Augusta is a city on Terra. Since this trilogy ends with the planet New Augusta left unprotected from outsystem raiders, maybe the Imperial refugees fled to the newly reclaimed Old Earth and established a new capital city named for the old capital planet.
Another puzzlement is the succession of political hegemonies. After the ecollapse of Old Earth, the colonies formed a Federation and later an Empire. Moreover, there was apparently a Directorate on Old Earth in the interregnum after the collapse caused by Gershwin's disruptions. There are some indications that the Empire of the Ecolitan series, also based on Terra, was formed after the fall of the Directorate.
The colonists who settled Accord were from the Noram region of Old Earth. Possibly these colonists were descendents of the shambletowners and devilkids, maybe mixed with an influx of refugees from the Old Empire. Moreover, the New Empire may have been established by the spiritual (and genetic) heirs of the Captain on Terra, later incorporating survivors on the former planets of the Old Empire.
One final note: if this novel reminded you of Battlefield Earth, it may not be a coincidence. Hubbard's novel was published only five years prior to the first novel in this series. Possibly Modesitt felt that he could write a more realistic version of that classic scenario.
Highly recommended for Modesitt fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of individual daring, dedicated perseverance, political and commercial intrigue, and personal combat with a touch of romance.

In this book, Modesitt uses an earthling as his hero. What is unique about this hero is his flaws. Too often, in my opinion, I read of a 'perfect' hero; however, I rather enjoyed reading of the mistakes this hero made and how he dealt with them.
As in most science fiction books, a leap of imagination is required, but with the leap made, this book is well worth a read by any reader willing to see it through to the end.

The book is worth reading.... It will make you think. It will make you angry. It will bore you at times. I know I'm being vague, but this is a LONG book. Flawed hero is an understatement. If you like to be challenged; pushed to think; then you'll probably like this book. It's certainly NOT for everyone.
A final note: as another reviewer indicated, "It is not appropriate for most children".

The career of an Air Force intercept analysis. This book takes you from the original enlistment to retirement. T. Wayne Babb details his career. From his bad start, to his rise to one of the top Air Force enlisted positions, he tells the reader what happened to him and what he was thinking at the time.
A must read for all current and former members of the Air Force intelligence community.

A very true account of one man's experience in the service of our country. Very funny, and very similar to my own experiences in many ways. The author's story telling ability is what makes this book special.
I would think that anyone that was in the military service during the 50's, 60's, and 70's would truely enjoy this book.
It is even more true for anyone that was in the U.S. Air Force Security Service of which the author was a part, as I was.

It's Hard to Soar Like an Eagle When You're Surrounded by a Pack of Machi Rats! However, Chief Babb has done exactly that with "NORTH OF KNOXVILLE, SOUTH OF ATLANTA".
When Wayne Babb left his hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee looking for adventure in the U.S. Air Force neither he, his family, nor the people he would meet down the road had any idea what lay in store. Settling in at a barracks at Lackland AFB, back in the days when barracks had no air conditioning, tv or radio, he started his journey up the enlisted ranks in a very tough career field.
But, as he would learn before long, the education is only part of the deal. His path takes him (and us, as readers) along for the ride, through a hard time at 202 technical school, a time filled with apprehension and new people, past a confrontation with his instructors, through the red tape involved in just trying to adapt to the Air Force rules and regulations (as applied by the instructors) finally to the eventual (if not belated) graduation day.
North of Knoxville, South of Atlanta is more than a memoir of an Air Force
experience... it is a testament to the value of friends, the importance of family, and the quest for that perfect moose, who, as often is the case, was sitting just across the barroom all along.
Knowing that he succeeded as an analyst doesn't make this story any less entertaining to read. It is a fun one, filled with crazy characters and bad Machi runs. As readers we once again don our Machi Boots and cruise along with Wayne as he comes of age in the 1960s It makes the reader long for
those carefree Air Force days when we thought we were so busy but still got
a 3 day break at the end of every duty cycle. Whether you knew Wayne or not, or have had the extreme priviledge of wearing a Trick cap does not matter...you will still appreciate Wayne and his Air Force journey.
I suppose what makes this story so special to me is that not only was it
fun to read, it was fun to experience. I have the extreme fortune of having served as a 202 at Misawa and San Vito (2 of the places where he followed me). We made memories back then that still exist today as our own folklore, a folklore we can pass along to our children and hope that they, someday, will have just as much fun as we had. I was riding shotgun throughout most of this book, and although the car didn't always start, it was one hell of a ride. Not just fun...it was pure Buck Owens beautiful.

Important Part of History.......2007-09-26
This book covers a group of little known heros of WWII. While small in number it's importance to the success of the war in the Pacific cannot be measured by it's size. Their contribution cannot be in operations alone as the very existance of the group was a foundation for future units such as theirs. It could even be said that the Special Forces of today might possibly not exist had it not been for the foresight of the founder and the execution of operations of the men of The Alamo Scouts. The book is well written and with plentiful photographs. Their accompolishments are truly astounding.
Long on Training, Short on Action.......2004-07-07
This chronological review of the Alamo Scouts is interesting, but...
The story spends a great deal of time describing the organization, setup, and mission of the Alamo Scouts. Mr. Zedric does a very good job of providing this background information.
The author also does a very god job of outlining the missions performed by the Scouts and the positive impact of the Scouts on the US war effort in the Pacific. However, the book falls short by overviewing many missions, instead of detailing a few particular missions.
I would have enjoyed the book more had Mr. Zedric introduced me to 1-2 of the teams, and explored in greater detail, their efforts.
Having said that, the book is still interesting and explore's a fascinating portion of the war in the Pacific. As a result, I do want to learn more about the Phillipin campaigns.

Read this book! Real people, real heroes. I have no idea why they haven't made a movie about these guys.
They have a record no unit on the planet can top: 106 missions in 18 months, 138 personnel (including staff, support and operators), and no wounded or killed in action.
Freaking Unbelievable! One of the more interesting anecdotes was a prayer by one of the Scouts (paraphrased): "Lord, If you don't want me to kill the enemy, don't let me see them..."
Get this book, it's history and it's not dry at all!
It has more details than I remember........1997-12-26
The story on page 240 is more clear than I remember it. I was a Gunners Mate on PT Boat 379 of Squdron 28 and have pictures of the two prisoners that Lt. Dove brought back to the boat. Also took a picture of the 39 people we rescued. Lt. Morton was our skipper. At least one part of the operation was in daylite. The "team" was made up of only two men, Lt. Dove and a Filipino Scout. We in the boat crew couldn't believe the scouts could get away with some of the operations they were on. A most fantastic group of men.
Outstanding Read! Never heard of the Alamo Scouts until now!.......1997-04-15
Silent Warriors of World War II is the amazing story of the Alamo Scouts, Sixth Army's elite commando, reconnaissance and intelligence gathering unit, which performed 106 missions behind Japanese lines in New Guinea and in the Philippines without losing a man killed or captured. The author not only informs and educates, he tells a complex story in very readable way. From the first page, the reader can picture what the Scouts look like, their personalities and their devotion to accomplishing the mission at all costs. This is not "dry" history! Zedric breathes life into the characters and puts the reader alongside the commandos in a rubber boat or deep in a tropical jungle. But the author does not embellish. He didn't need to--what the Alamo Scouts accomplished needed no embellishment. Zedric has done a masterful job in telling their story--one which should have been told years ago. A must read

WONDERFUL READ!.......2000-05-19
It's very interesting to read this first Henrick book and see where this prolific writer started. This novel is filled w/ passion. Henrick displays a vivid imagination, and one can sense the developing power of his story telling powers. This is a must read for those who enjoyed HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. Though not as technical as Clancy, Henrick has one up on the master in sheer story telling ability. Read this one, then delve into the rest of his work. You won't be disappointed.

As an avid reader of sea based adventure stories, I've read my fair share of Richard Henrick books, enjoying each one of them. Thus it was interesting to read this first book, that shows all the passion and incredible story telling of a promising writer to come. The characters in this story are well thought out and filled with motivation. The story moves with the speed of a runaway freight train, and one can just pick out the creative foundations of the author who would go on to write such classics as CRIMSON TIDE and his latest(and my very favorite)--NIGHTWATCH.

This was my favorite book of all time. It was action-packed and exciting. Richard included the perfect amount of detail, not too much and not too little. He wrote a wonderful story about a Russian first-strike on the United States. GET THIS BOOK!!!!!

I actually read the comments from the other readers before purchasing this book myself and the "he" / "she" reference which most of the reviewers mentioned didn't really get in the way of the content of the book itself. (Who knows, that may not have been the writer, but rather the publishing company, like so many other typos in books). I liked the way Scott Shaw intermingles spirituality with the martial arts; it reminds you of how the old Chinese practitioners see the martial arts - as an art and not just for fighting. I learned interesting tid-bits from this book and recommend it for anyone who is spiritually-minded.
Great Book - A One Stop Shop.......2002-02-06
The is really a great book. It begins by detailing a factual history of the ancient martial arts and their interaction with Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism. It then goes on to outline numerous meditation and Ki development exercises. It even throws in a few self defense techniques, just to show how the "Spiritual Warrior" can learn to consciously defend "Him" or "Her" self. This text provides the reader with not only a new and deeper understanding of the physical aspects of the martial arts but a complete how to for Ki development and the various forms of Buddhist meditation which have been developed for and associated with the martial arts over the centuries. I used this book as one of the references for my Master's Thesis.
While doing my Thesis I contacted Master Shaw. He was so nice and talked to me indepth about meditation and how it can become a natural evolution of the martial arts. He possesses a vast amount of knowledge on this subject, which is apparent in this book. I believe this book truly adds a new chapter to the martial arts.
One of the things I like most about this book is that it does not solely reference the martial artist, or "Spiritual Warrior" as Scott Shaw details all of us to be as, "He" or "Him." It also intermingles "She" or "Her" with this delineation. When speaking to Master Shaw he told me that this was not his idea, nor was it the way he had written the book. It was something done by the editors. None the less, I think this interchangable style is great. It acknowledges and gives power to us ladies, something most books on the martial arts never do.
Overall, I believe this to be an important work on breaking down the barriers of the traditional macho male dominated martial arts and taking them to the level where they can be embraced by the more spiritually inclined among us.
Your one stop shop...
Like Sand Between the Fingers.......2002-01-31
For those that know their martial art history, the beginning chapter of this book is shady. Most of the information is true, but some of the printed material is speculative and not labeled as such.
The mixing and mingling of feminine and masculine pronouns assigned to 'the warrior' throughout the text made the reading...inconsistent and strangely difficult. There is no doubt that both men and women are/can be warriors, and I think the writing would have been more fluent if Shaw had just made that point, chose one pronoun, and stuck to it.
Shaw displays his opinions upon the spiritual path to the martial arts very well, but I think that he forgot to stay open to the idea that there is more than one way to skin a cat. When reading this book it sounds as if you are doing everything wrong if not following the path he is documenting, and I strongly disagree. To put it more poetically, "There are many paths up the mountain, but only one peak".
Sprirituality is a difficult subject to write about. It is like sand - when a person tries to take hold of it in a physical manner it simply slips through the fist. I bought this book looking for a truly spiritual text, and was disappointed to find yet another picture filled manual on the martial arts. Shaw's effort is to be commended, but I'm affraid that in his attempt to convey something very esoteric the sand slipped between his fingers.

This is a surprisingly enlightening book, with historical information on the development of the martial philosophy up to the modern day applications. It's written to be understood but doesn't talk down to people. One of the best books yet I've seen for martial arts. I recommend it to all new practitioners as well as the seasoned ones.
This book puts in perspective some of our "every day" ideas........1999-08-24
I like this book. It thought me a lot of things. That is to say that it cleared or put in to words some of the ideas I was thinking at the time. The first part of this book is an exelent path for those who are looking for a different view on martial arts if not life as a whole. With the good things said, now I have to write about the only draw back of the book. The second part of the book talks about exercises and meditation technics, and these are fine and easy to follow. However, after these technics come a serious of fighting moves an teachings that quite frankly didn'tsit well with me. I don't mean that they are bad technics. I just didn't see a real reason to have them in the book because the fighting technics shown are common to most martial arts that teach some kind of grappling. Maybe after I mature more as a person and a martial artist the secound part of the book will make sense to me. In closing buy the book and pay attention.

Super Reader.......2007-08-30
Gerswin continues to try and restore Old Earth. He needs people that can help him to get expensive and advanced biological type tech to enable him to do this.
His other problem is that killers are after him. He is not without his own advantages, however, and decides to do a little killer hunting himself. A bit of superhero derring do for him, as he battles murderers, rivals and spies to continue on with his work.
Devilkid on the Loose.......2004-07-14
The Silent Warrior continues to follow the devilkid Gerswin as he attempts to procure biological technologies that will aid in the recovery of his home, Old Earth. Gerswin uses the OER Foundation and its administrator, Lyr D'Meryon, to cultivate these new technologies. But, after many decades spent in the cause of restoring Old Earth to its former glory, Gerswin is getting restless at the slow pace and takes drastic action to speed up the process. Oh...and he is also being hunted by the Empire-spanning Assassins Guild, who will stop at nothing to get to Gerswin...they will even go through those he loves.
The Silent Warrior was a better book than its predecessor, Dawn For a Distant Earth. The pace was faster and more "stuff" just seemed to be going on. But...Modesitt's prose is still clunky, and at times a bit difficult to read because of it. Also, there were too many characters that just seemed to show up to advance the plot along -- usually this entailed dying. I think Modesitt would have been better off developing two or three of the more minor characters to show us the depth that Gerswin is willing to go to use these people...even if they do benefit at times (not every minor character dies). My finally criticism is that the ending to this book, like the last, was incomplete and not very satisfying...it just served to lead us into the third and finally book (which hopefully does have a satisfying conclusion...seeing as how it's the conclusion to the trilogy).
Despite these criticisms, this book really was much better than the first. As mentioned above, Lyr -- the administrator of the OER Foundation -- was really an interesting character...at least from the point of view of her running the Foundation (we only get a few hints at her personal life). Her interaction with Gerswin helps to transform him a bit as a character. She shows him that he must rely, at least in some small way, on other people.
Overall, this book should only be read within the context of the trilogy, but is nonetheless a decent overall book and I look forward to topping off the trilogy.
Forging the Tools.......2004-06-12
The Silent Warrior is the second novel in The Forever Hero trilogy, following Dawn for a Distant Earth. In the previous volume, Gershwin and his compatriots liberate a shipload of arcdozers for the reclamation effort. When they return the (mostly) unhurt crew of the stolen ship, the Empire quickly determines the perpetuators of the hijacking and move in force on Old Earth. The Court of Inquiry soon establishes guilt, but is reluctant to publicize the crime. They recommend leaving the arcdozers in place and transferring the current garrison to the newly formed Imperial Reclamation and Restoration Corps.
In this novel, Gershwin turns down the opportunity to become Commandant of the new Recorps and instead leaves Old Earth to take command of an underpowered and overtasked cruiser, the Fleurdilis, to make initial contact with a previously unknown alien species. Despite a xenophobic executive officer and an ignorance of native customs, Gershwin establishes friendly relations with the aliens, who he names Ursans, and smoothes their further contacts with the Empire. He and his crew are commended for their performance.
After fifteen years on the fringes, Gershwin requests a change of duty to Maintenance in an outbase station. He is assigned as the Commander of an underutilized and obsolescent refitting center and salvage yard. Naturally, he starts turning it into a Galactic class refit station. He marries Allison and they have a son, Corson.
Gershwin also becomes active as the trustee of the OER Foundation founded by Caroljoy, his first lover. He steers the research grants toward less conventional biological technology. Later, he starts forming small commercial companies to market the new biological products.
When the Guild tries to assassinate Gershwin, he determines to destroy the organization. With the assistance of Lyr, the Administrator of the OER Foundation, and some new companies, Gershwin tracks the movements of the Guild leadership. Then he starts to terminate them using their own methods.
Highly recommended for Modesitt fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of individual daring, dedicated perseverance, and commercial intrigue with a touch of romance.

Silent Warrior continues Gerswin's quest to restore and rebuild a nuclear war ravaged Earth in the face of opposition from a powerful galactic empire. In this, the second part of the trilogy, Modesitt examines both the political and economic labyrinths that Gerswin has to navigate through to to gain the leverage he needs to accomplish his massive undertaking. The book's also not short on action, as Gerswin has to battle and outwit the assasins guild, commerical rivals and the galactic intelligence service, while trying to keep his agenda and the fact that he's immortal hidden.
