Book Description

A brilliant virtuoso of violence, Richard Marcinko rose through Navy ranks to create and command one of this country's most elite and classified counterterrorist units, SEAL TEAM SIX. Now this thirty-year veteran recounts the secret missions and Special Warfare madness of his worldwide military career -- and the riveting truth about the top-secret Navy SEALs.

Marcinko was almost inhumanly tough, and proved it on hair-raising missions across Vietnam and a war-torn world: blowing up supply junks, charging through minefields, jumping at 19,000 feet with a chute that wouldn't open, fighting hand-to-hand in a hellhole

jungle. For the Pentagon, he organized the Navy's first counterterrorist unit: the legendary SEAL TEAM SIX, which went on classified missions from Central America to the Middle East, the North Sea, Africa and beyond.

Then Marcinko was tapped to create Red Cell, a dirty-dozen team of the military's most accomplished and decorated counterterrorists. Their unbelievable job was to test the defenses of the Navy's most secure facilities and installations. The result was predictable: all hell broke loose.

Here is the hero who saw beyond the blood to ultimate justice -- and the decorated warrior who became such a maverick that the Navy brass wanted his head on a pole, and for a time, got it. Richard Marcinko -- ROGUE WARRIOR.

5 out of 5 stars Yeah, coolest book ever........2007-10-03

Rogue Warrior is by far one of the best auto-biographies I have ever read, Commander Richard Marcinko is a hero, and a patriot by any definition of either word. He is the reason our enemies fear us. Once you read this book you will be wondering why our government doesn't have him as the commander of the joint cheifs of staff.

5 out of 5 stars Books 1 & 2 are spectacular, but the rest are forgettable.......2007-08-20

Series review: Rogue Warrior [Written Mar 2005]

Last I checked, there are 9 books in this series:

1. Rogue Warrior (Autobiography)
2. Rogue Warrior: Red Cell (Autobiography)
3. Rogue Warrior: Green Team (Fiction)
4. Rogue Warrior: Task Force Blue (Fiction)
5. Rogue Warrior: Designation Gold (Fiction)
6. Rogue Warrior: Seal Force Alpha (Fiction)
7. Rogue Warrior: The Real Team (Quasi-Fiction)
8. Rogue Warrior: Option Delta (Fiction)
9. Rogue Warrior: Echo Platoon (Fiction)

Books one and two are autobiographical (about Richard Marcinko's career as commander of a US Navy Seal Team). Book 1 details his transformation of Seal 6 into an elite counter-terrorist unit. Book 2 details his formation of "Red Cell", which was used (in real life) to test the security at various US Military installations. Red Cell was a smashing success, but it was a pyrrhic victory that ultimately resulted in total failure ... mostly because Marcinko was his own worst enemy. He did his job too well, and (unwisely) took unholy glee in flouting authority and humiliating upper brass in the process ... and he paid the price for it ... and we, as a nation, paid the price for ignoring the results of Operation Red Cell, when terrorists, using exactly the sort of unconventional tactics Marcinko used, destroyed the WTC on 9/11. In hind sight, it's one big, fat, ugly "I TOLD YO SO", written before the actual fact.

Ok, moving right along. In book 3, the co-authors (and co-author) suddenly switch gears to FICTION, and stay there for the rest of the series.

My impression: Books 1 and 2 are excellent, high-intensity reading ... offering an insider's look into how Marcinko transformed Seal 6 into one of the most elite counter terrorist units in the world, and how he later was tasked with forming Red Cell, to test US Military Security at installations around the world. His findings at the time, many of which were not acted on by the higher ups in the pentagon, later became prophetic on Sept 11, 2001, when terrorists using exactly the sort of unconventional tactics Marcinko wrote about, destroyed the WTC.

As for books 3-9 ... MEDIOCRE PAP. Marcinko's autobiographical books are spectacular, but his fiction offerings rapidly parachute into a trite, repetative and self-hyping free fire zone. If you read one, you've read them all.

My advice is to read the first 2 books, and then resist the overpowering urge to buy more ... you're not really missing anything, because the author (after leaving his autobiographical home turf) quickly transforms himself from a decorated, innovative and truly scary ex-commando who served his nation well into a hack writer, relying on past glories for creative fictional fodder.

Books 1 & 2 are highly recommended, but the rest of the series is entirely forgettable.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome!!! If you're into that sort of thing.......2007-08-18

Rogue Warrior is an amazing account of the physical and mental toughness of Navy SEALs. I read the book in less than 2 days and was upset when I finished. If you are in the mood for a fast paced, action packed black ops story, this is the book for you.

However...

If you would like to read an excellent piece of literature, please look some place else. Rogue Warrior is the equivalent of a Danielle Steele novel for men. Dick Marcinko brags incessantly about his military and romantic conquests, which becomes tiresome (no matter how well deserved it is). This is a fun read, no more, no less.

WARNING!

Steer clear of the other novels in the Rogue Warrior series! Marcinko found success with this edition and simply repeated the formula time and time again. If you continue with the books, it will get old and sour you on Demo Dick.

5 out of 5 stars I CANNOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN!.......2007-07-22

This is one of the most captivating books I have ever read. From the very beginning to the very end I was hooked. I could not wait to come home from work just so that i can keep reading and find out what happens next. I highly recommend this book to anybody who is interested in Military, SpecOps. A "must have" for any military book collection.

As for those who comment on how macho and egotistical Marcinko is... They have never been in the Military. If they were they were probably had a desk job. As a former Marine myself, I can tell you that most infantry units are just like Marcinko. They have huge egos. They have to! Im just glad Marcinko is on our side!!

5 out of 5 stars Richard Marcinko is my hero!.......2007-05-21

If you like real combat reading then you'll love this book. This is the first book in a long line of the Rogue Warrior series. You must start with this book, then you'll read the rest as fast as you get them. I couldn't put the book down. I have read all his books in sequential order and they are by-far the best written of this genre. He writes from real experience and real situations. The names and places have been changed for obvious reasons, but its REAL. I HIGHLY recommend this book and the rest of the series!!!

Book Description

No one has ever accused Richard Marcinko -- aka Rogue Warrior® -- of being an altar boy, but in the latest installment of his bestselling series, Demo Dick finds himself darkening the aisles of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, tracking a group of terrorists who want to turn the world's largest Catholic church into the world's biggest Roman candle.

A trip to Italy for Dick Marcinko turns into more than pasta and gondola rides. Nothing and no one is sacred as Marcinko sprays irreverent asides, targeting everything from antiterror wannabes to the nuns who taught him in parochial school. Called "the real deal" by Vince Flynn, the bestselling author of Memorial Day, Marcinko entertains, informs, and even finds time to genuflect in his new book.

Visiting a NATO conference in Rome, Demo Dick blisters bureaucratic ears with a speech about Europe's vulnerabilities and the need to get serious about terrorism. He caps off his talk with an impromptu demonstration of the threat, unmasking a plot to kill the conferees seconds before it begins -- and just in time to play volleyball with a live hand grenade. The action ratchets up from there as the former SEAL commander is shanghaied to Sicily to help investigate the attempted theft of nukes from a U.S. base. Is the Mafia involved? Or is this the work of Saladin, a shadowy extremist trying to step into bin Laden's shoes? A high body count lends credence to both theories, but before Demo Dick can untangle the plot, his firm is hired to track down "shrinkage" in a courier operation in Asia. Since said shrinkage involves data and currency worth hundreds of millions of dollars, Demo Dick anticipates a Rogue-sized finder's fee. But he soon discovers the job is a trap. Lured to a cave filled with outrageously hungry tigers in the Thailand jungle, Demo Dick sucks cat breath before being saved by the beautiful if prickly Trace Dahlgren and veteran Rogue sideman Al "Doc" Tremblay. Marcinko has only escaped the frying pan for the fire; he rides a hijacked jet back to Italy, where Saladin plans to wrap up the plot's loose ends in a bonfire at the center of the Eternal City.

In Holy Terror, Marcinko mixes his trademark wit and wisdom with nonstop action in a romp across Europe and Asia.

2 out of 5 stars Demo Dick needs a new co-author.......2007-05-30

This, and all Marcinko's earlier works, are pure mind candy... but that's why we love it! However, this book (and the previous one with the same co-author) lack the pop and detail of his books with Weisman. We do not get as clear a view into Marcinko's mind (re: tactics, insights, opinions, etc... the stuff that really MADE the previous works), the action sequences are drawn out, and the insights into SpecOps are almost non-existent.

I still like "Demo Dick", but wish the Sharkman would partner-up afresh!

3 out of 5 stars Just not like the old days.......2006-11-04

I too am one of the readers here that have consumed all of Marcinko's books to date, including the business manuals. The latest installment in the series just isn't as good as the books that got me interested in his books in the first place. None of the "dweeb editor" interjections are present, none of the POV descriptions of the action are to be found. I remember one of his early books having an outstanding description of tachypsychia (tunnel vision, in layman's terms) and the physical effects of surviving a fight. That style and panache are long gone between this tome and his previous one. The only real saving grace is that this book is miles more professionally written than Vengeance was. That book was almost as bad as those hack Mack Bolan novels. This one is a step, and probably two steps, above Vengeance, but it doesn't come close to equalling the first several novels. I have to agree with the sentiment that this series is doomed unless they move A LOT more towards the style that worked when Weisman was co-authoring them.

"Former SEAL Team Six leader and American hero Richard Marcinko is back in action with a thriller ripped from tomorrow's headlines. Mixing fact with fiction, Marcinko returns to his authentic, no-holds-barred style in the latest explosive installment of his New York Times bestselling series, Rogue Warrior(R): Vengeance. Armed with irreverent wit and a fully loaded submachine gun, Marcinko's fictional alter ego takes no prisoners as he and his Red Cell II team tackle fat-cat American bureaucrats as well as terrorists. Interspersing action with his classic combination of wisecracks and earthy humor, Marcinko crams a chemical explosion, a high-speed helicopter chase, a train hijacking, and a headless corpse into the first few pages. When it becomes clear that terrorists are gunning for Demo Dick as well as the country's most precious symbols and institutions, things become very personal. Forget the Rogue Warrior's usual terms of endearment -- this time he's out for blood. Launched on an all-out international hunt, Demo Dick discovers a plot targeting the country's largest shipping port for liquefied petroleum gas...but that's just a prelude for Independence Day. Of all the thriller writers out there today, only one has truly walked the walk and talked the talk. Marcinko infuses his new book with stories and details that could come only from the inside -- which makes them all the more alarming. Reserve the edge of your seat for this one.... "

1 out of 5 stars What happened to the Rogue Warrior?.......2007-06-25

I am a fan of most action genres and the early Marcinko stuff was great. This book, however, was so bad I couldn't even finish it. The characters were weak, the story poorly developed, and there was no evidence of any kind of research being done in this book. I live in Vegas and was dissapointed that Marcinko didn't even bother to verify glaring and rediculous errors that could have been verified on-line (even though a little on-site investigation would be better). It may be that this story line is just played out and should be put to rest.

5 out of 5 stars Macinko yet again delivers.......2007-03-13

Marcinko is at it again with a fact/fiction return of life and conflict. Im a specialist of military tribute and i am again satisfied.

1 out of 5 stars check out from the library - don't buy.......2007-01-02

When Demo Dick first wrote Rogue Warrior, it was good because the first person format was about "his story" (with the characteristic Marcinko lingo). This is latest novel is a sad departure from the DevGru Guru we were entertained by...and some of us worked with.

It takes more than a ghost writer to make a good story. Yes DHS is lame. Yes, a trained chimp could out perform DHS in almost any scenario you could devise. We all know that, and the public endures the mediocrity because no individual knows how to professionalize the machine (witness, Mr. M, how your Red Cell ops embarassed the Navy - pissing off admirals without getting that much to change).

Potential readers -- don't waste your time and money to be disappointed by this story.

Dick -- (with respect, sir) go back to your roots and tell "your story" because it's better than all the make believe and yes, I realize it is more work for you to put it together. Instead of collaborating with a ghost writer, collaborate with Larry Simmons and some of the old Mustangs, or Master Chiefs like Gary Gallagher who can tell the "real story" of how things work(ed). It's not as much published glory for you personally but the end result could be fantastic and a potential "classic" in the way Rogue Warrior was.

4 out of 5 stars The Rogue Warrior doesn't disappoint........2006-11-07

Yet another action filled book by Richard Marcinko. If you have only read one or all of the Rogue Warrior serious of books you won't be disappointed by this one, the Red Cell team are there to follow Demo Dick in making life hard for anyone who gets in his way.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible!.......2006-07-12

Following the series our pleasantly plump former SEAL "collaborated" on with John Weisman, these latest forays into the fiction world are best left alone. Characters are weak, as is the dialgue, and the plot is virtually nonexistant. His new collaboration with DeFelice just does not have the same pizzaz!

5 out of 5 stars Seals approach to success........2004-02-03

When I first put this tape in I thought to myself what the heck is this guy going on about. But I kept on going. It will grow on you. Richard's navy seal strategy to success is definitely one of the original motivational tapes out there. With a warriors attitude and what the author describes as "Testical Fortitude" you know your in for a ride. The author takes real navy missions and turns them into business strategies. With a philosophy of breaking rules only hurts the person who made the rules Richard just puts a foot in the face of whoever stands in the way. Dont be a follower. Set the standard not live up to it. Its a very inspiring look at a different approach to success. Exciting and motivating.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2002-12-27

Great book. I like Dickie's straight forward, everything goes approach. Very practical and useful advice you can put to use right away no matter what your career is.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Leadership Secrets.......2002-03-21

Another good motivational book from the Rogue, but I have seen much of the same ideas in a lot of his other books. I would still recommend it to anyone intrested in looking for a good motivational book.

5 out of 5 stars Straight talk from a straight shooter.......2000-07-03

I have read several business success books but none of the others even came close to this one. Marcinko cuts through all the politics and political correctness and delivers an excellent set of principles applicable to any industry. His war stories are more than just entertaining, they really drive home the points that he is making about the importance of planning, training, etc. This is must reading for everyone who is a warrior at heart regardless of their field of endeavor.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Make Excuses, be a Leader!.......2000-06-30

This book is entertaining and well written. The stories used to illustrate the points made are usually an adventure in themselves. Richard Marcinko practices what he preaches and this book will tell you how to do the same. This is an easy to read guide to being successful and the best book of its' kind I have ever read. This gives the reader the no excuses, no BS way to succeed. Buy this book!

3 out of 5 stars Fun read, but dangerous advice for use in the workplace..........2007-08-19

OK, up front I'll admit I had a fun time reading this... Leadership Secrets of the Rogue Warrior: A Commando's Guide to Success by Richard Marcinko. It's not your typical leadership book with polished words and concepts. It's raw, gritty, and will likely offend a few readers. But I'd think twice about trying to apply this "warrior mentality" to your business life. Odds are you'll end up hated, fired, or in jail...

Contents: The Rogue Warrior's Ten Commandments of SpecWar; Introduction, Chapters 1 through 10 - The Ten Commandments; Epilogue; A Note on Sources

The ten commandments are: 1) I am the War Lord and the wrathful God of Combat and I will always lead you from the front - not the rear. 2) I will treat you all alike - just like s***. 3) Thou shalt do nothing I will not do first, and thus will you be created Warriors in My deadly image. 4) I shall punish thy bodies because the more thou sweatest in training, the less thou bleedest in combat. 5) Indeed, if thou hurteth in thy efforts and thou suffer painful dings, then thou are Doing It Right. 6) Thou hast not to like it - thou hast just to do it. 7) Thou shalt Keep It Simple, Stupid. 8) Thou shalt never assume. 9) Verily, thou art not paid for thy methods, but for thy results, by which meaneth thou shalt kill thine enemy by any means available before he killeth you. 10) Thou shalt, in thy Warrior's Mind and Soul, always remember My ultimate and final Commandment: There Are No Rules - Thou Shalt Win at All Costs.

I had one misconception corrected quickly. I thought the "Rogue Warrior" was a fictional character used in novels written by Marcinko. I didn't know until I read this book that he really *was* the Rogue Warrior and was a successful covert soldier, adept at many types of warfare. Based on his experience and training, he distilled his beliefs into what you read here. From the perspective of someone going to war with a fellow fighter, this is exactly the type of person I'd want by my side... ruthless, creative, and willing to do whatever is needed to win and stay alive. But does that really translate to the business and personal lives of the readers? I hope not...

After each of his explanations of the principle being discussed, he gives an example of how it applies to war and how it applies to business. Generally, some of the concepts are true... train hard, get results, etc. But the "win at all costs" theme is the exact attitude that ended a lot of Enron executives (as well as others) in jail. Marcinko does try and say that you have to be honorable in the way you approach this, but it's normally followed by "breaking the rules to get results". I know what that is *supposed* to mean, but in reality it comes across as the end justifying the means. The argument would be that there's a line that shouldn't be crossed, but I'd venture that for many, that line is too blurred to be used as an accurate measuring point. Buying into this philosophy in an organization would make for a ruthless and brutal workforce, and not one that I'd like to return to day after day. And I suppose in Marcinko's eyes that would make me soft and worthless... oh, well.

If I were to step onto a combat field or a dojo, I'd want to adopt this mindset. But if I step into my workplace, there's a few more things to be considered than just raw "kill the enemy before he kills you" emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Really straight forward.......2006-11-27

I picked up this book after reading the reviews, and having read marcinko's strategy for success.
The clincher for me was, however, sparky999's review below.
If someone who tries to use words such as dicotomous (dichotomous), Nepolianic complex (Napoleonic Complex) and referring to Causawitz (Presumably Von Clausewitz) whilst totally messing them up is the sort of person who so desperately wants to be viewed as important end educated without actually putting the effort into being so.
Not that poor command of the english language is a crime, but attempting to use words that are usually only in the vocabulary of the highly educated, and not even bothering to check on their spelling or proper use is the sign of a person with poor attention to detail at best, and a complete fool at worst.

And in short, I thought that if this sort of person thought that Dick has no idea, then it's probably great stuff.

And I was right.

Ghandi said "Be the change you want to see in others", but Marcinko put's it a bit more succinctly saying "Lead from the front" It's not really much new, it's just a more direct delivery.

Leadership is about trust, comradeship and loyalty (Both ways) this is true in families, military units, business and even sporting teams. It's just the consequences of poor leadership are different.

i highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be the person that Gets things done. In a sentece this book says:
Get the job done to gain trust. Garner trust to create loyalty. Return loyalty to create leadership.
there is a lot more in it than that, but it's the simple and direct way he says it that grabs attention.

4 out of 5 stars No nonsense is colorful and interesting.......2004-03-18

This is the first "rogue warrior" book that I have read and I was instantly hooked. The principles that the author puts forward are simple and effective, driving home the overall messages very well. This book has helped me to think differently about what I do, where I work, and how I allow people to impact my day-to-day activities. In short, the book has pointed out that YOU are the only one who is in control of your career...that through proper training and preparation, you can be ready for anything...and that true leaders disregard the political ramifications and take decisive and definative stances - in spite of the trials that they will face.

The author is rough and gruff in terms of the language he uses -- so if you are easily offended, you should probably stay away. If you can handle the strong wording, then this book may be a good choice for you to "lead the charge" and take back your career.

5 out of 5 stars This is the good one............2002-03-23

Even if you are not the leader of your team/group/posse, whatever, this is a great book to help you to BECOME that leader. This is a straightahead, no nonsense book which makes you look at yourself and where you want to be, and what you want to do and best of all, makes you think. It is not an answer book, that is for sure, so be ready to think fast.

3 out of 5 stars Dick is not a businessman.......2001-11-15

Sorry, but I know Mr. Marcinko (on a casual basis) and I know many of his former TEAM warriors on a more professional basis. Dick is an EXCEPTIONAL conflict commander, but this skillset does not transfer to a business environment.

As much as middle managers want to beleive (and in some cases dickweed executive management) that they are warfighters within their overblown egos...they are not. Warfighting and business are two totaly dicotomous activities.

Business, by its nature, is meant to further the business goals of an organization. War, on the converse, is designed to subjugate an enemy. Tell me, is there any commonality? Doubtful. And, if business leaders actually find common theology with 'Dick', Sun Tsu, or Causawitz, then they need to enter physco therapy as soon as possible... a serious Nepolianic complex

In war, combatants are able to achieve objects by 'any means neccessary'. This is not the case in business, if for no other reason than human decency with interject boundries... I am not a fan of any military doctrine being applied to 'making money'...wrong, wrong wrong.

Other than the core of this book. the stories are fun, but have nothing to do with business... if they do, then we (as a nation) have moved into a sorry state of "win at any cost" and, that is very depressing.

Book Description

In the smash bestselling autobiography Rogue Warrior, Richard Marcinko chronicled his controversial thirty-year career in the U.S. Navy's elite maritime commandos, the SEAL teams. Marcinko rose through the ranks to create and command the Navy's legendary counterterrorist unit, SEAL TEAM SIX, scoring vitories against enemies all over the globe. Pleased with his success, the chief of Naval Operations ordered him to create RED CELL -- a dirty-dozen team of SEALs whose mission was to infiltrate the Navy's most secure installations. Marcinko did his job too well. No Navy base was safe -- no commander's billet secure. His reward was a year in a federal penitentiary.

During that year, Marcinko and John Weisman wrote Rogue Warrior. But, bound by government restrictions on classified information, Marcinko was only able to tell a fraction of his incredible story. The tales he could not tell, the secrets he could not reveal, now explode on the page as the Rogue Warrior returns in the blockbuster suspense novel of the year -- a novel with him as the hero!

He is the enemy's worst nightmare, living by the untimate commandment of unconventional warfare -- win, by any means. He is brash, brazen, and possessed equally of a killer charm and the capacity to become a stone-cold killer. As ROGUE WARRIOR II: RED CELL begins, Dick Marcinko is a freelance security consultant, playing terrorist at Tokyo's Narita Airport. Easily penetratingthe facility's defenses, he engages in a deadly firefight with North Korean operatives -- and makes a discovery that plunges him into a secret war for America's national security.

Financed by traitorous Americans, smugglers are transferring nuclear materials to North Korea through Japan. Former Secretary of Defense Grant Griffith, a behind the scenes power in the Pentagon, believes that only the Rogue Warrior can stop the operation; he convinces the Navy to recall Marcinko involuntarily to command RED CELL. Marcinko is a legent to the SEALs of RED CELL, and they're willing to follow him into hell -- to go anywhere and do anything to crush those who would betray America for a price.

From infiltrating Washington's Navy Yard offices and the Navy's top-secret nuclear weapons depot in Seal Beach, California, to raiding a North Korean Navy base in the most heavily guarded harbor in Asia, to a final assault on a target far out in the Pacific, the Rogue Warrior and his marauding SEALs fight incredible odds and increasingly dangerous enemies. And, as time runs out, ROGUE WARRIOR II: RED CELL races to its electrifying climax.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original Rogue Warrior.......2003-12-17

I waited for this book to come out after enthusiastically reading the original "Rogue Warrior." I thought Red Cell was good...well you might say it was "OK." But it certainly didnt have the drama of the very first Rogue Warrior book.

As a sidenote which might interest other readers, I was told by one of the characters of the first Rogue Warrior that "Red Cell was more true than the original Rogue Warrior." I was told this by Jim Watson when I was visiting the UDT/SEAL museum in Fort Pierce, FL in 1994. He didnt go into any specific details and I didnt ask. After hearing Jim Watson make this comment to me in his office, I have since wondered how much (or how little) is really true in ANY of the Rogue Warrior series of books.

Honestly, my advice is after youve read the first Rogue Warrior book, youve basically read them all.

4 out of 5 stars You'll find yourself laughing and cursing right along.......2003-12-13

Marcinko knows his stuff. There's no doubt he's from the old school of stick it in your face and make you like it leadership.
Great action sequences and real enough to admit even the highest trained Spec warriors make mistakes or s%#t just sometimes happens.(i.e. Murphy's Law always rules)
The story moves along swiftly with just the right amounts of shooting, profanity, techno jargon, humor, and drinking to keep it interesting.
Yes, the violence level is high but, so is the fun. Bravo Zulu.

3 out of 5 stars Fun thriller but ego gets annoying.......2003-09-29

This book is fairly fun to read especially if you like spec ops and that sort of thing. But his ego just gets terribly annoying, as well as his attempts at humor - he tries too hard to make himself seem macho. WE GET THE POINT, YOURE A TOUGH NAVY SEAL! But besides that, its a pretty fun read.

3 out of 5 stars Great action.......2003-06-20

Cheesey writing, but excellent action. I'm not much for fiction, but this was a blast.

5 out of 5 stars These books ain't all fiction - that's what makes them fun.......2002-04-14

If you have read all of Cmdr Marcinko's books, and I have, you know that some of the 'asides' he gives in these books are true. Red Cell did do a security exercise where they simulated 'blowing up' Air Force One. Marcinko did lead a team of shooters into Libya where they waxed over 30 people in a terrorist camp. Now the main story, which in Red Cell is about the smuggling of nuclear material to Japanese Rightists by traitors in the U.S., (as far as I know), that's fiction.
For those in the know, it's fun reading Marcinko's books and seeing where he's taken the real stuff and blended it in with the fiction. Of all his books, this is the one I still enjoy reading the most.

Book Description

Richard Marcinko first exploded out of the clandestine world of special forces/unconventional warfare with his #1 New York Times bestselling autobiography Rogue Warrior. Now, he calls upon the warriors who served by his side to tell their own stories. The Real Team tells it like it is: how highly motivated individuals come to the Teams, how they train, and how they fight in the four corners of the globe.

From the sea, from the air, or from the land -- SEAL Teams attack the enemy from any direction, any time, with weapons ranging from a K-bar knife to an AK-47. Here, for the first time the real life models for such characters as Indian Jew, Duck foot Dewey, and Prince Valiant recount their journeys from the civilian world to BUD/S training, their first experiences under fire, and how they turned from newbies to seasoned veterans, from loyal U.S. servicemen to Rogue Warriors whose only rule was that the Warrior does not give up. Ever.

The Real Team also reveals the Rogue Warrior's secrets for team selection and team maintenance. From setting up an ambush to making a HAHO -- high altitude, high opening -- parachute jump, from the Philippines to Desert Storm, the stories in the audiobook are about real men and real missions, and about the SEAL mentality of teamwork, training, loyalty, and never-say-die aggression. For it is the spirit of the real Teams that shaped these extraordinary individuals and positioned them for success -- in every battlefield and every endeavor they would face in life.

5 out of 5 stars The real guys are as interesting as the fictional ones.......2007-01-03

After reading most of the Rogue Warrior books, you get the feeling that you know the supporting cast pretty well. Getting the backstory on the real men on whom the characters are based is really special. Typical Marchinko -- blunt and plainspoken.

5 out of 5 stars Marcinko giving some of his men their due........2003-01-10

Great stories from a group of skilled and dedicated soldiers told in the only way they know how, with honesty, brutality and in some cases a sense of humor. This is a fast read that kept me enthralled because of the pace of the book. The stories are long enough to give you some detail and the situations and short enough that there are no lapses of boredom. It is a great book for non-fiction action of some of great warriors who really loved what they were doing.

3 out of 5 stars Needed more ' real life' stories in The Real Team.......2002-12-24

I've read 5 of Marchinkos books over the last 18 months and he writes great stuff. The stories are well described and each reads like an spec. ops. mission that was only recently de-classified.

The guys he works with all have unique personalities and backgrounds but plenty of motivation. I bought this book to learn a bit more about who joins the team...and (more importantly) to hear them describe their best/worst missions. Each guy must have a mission that they look back upon?? Beyond just their upbringing, I was hoping to read more of their 'lives on the edge'. I got only a little of that.

If you have friend or family looking at the military, this is certainly the book for them.

4 out of 5 stars Only for fans.......2002-06-20

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who's not already a fan of the Rogue Warrior books. It's basically a collection of essays by friends of Marcinko (most of whom have been used as characters in his novels) about their background, including combat experiences, etcetera.

This is also the first Marcinko book I've read that seemed to be clearly aimed, at least in part, at the audience for his two management and leadership books. That is business people who want to be hardcore. To this end, all the essays touch on the individual's view on teamwork and what makes a good leader, etc.

All in all, interesting for fans of Marcinko's books; useful for people who want to understand how a team should or can work.

5 out of 5 stars Not your typical Rogue book.......2002-05-09

The Real Team looks at some of the people Dick Marcinko has worked with over the years and lets you see the real person, not the version which ends up in the fictional "Rogue Warrior" series. This book is a good comapnion not only to the "Rogue" series, but it also works well with the other two non-fiction books Mr. Marcinko has written. If you want a lot of action, this probably isn't the book you want. If you want some background and history, then get this one to go next to all your other Rogue books.

Book Description

The Rogue's March tells controversial true story of the US Army deserters--the majority of them Irish immigrants--who fought valiantly as a Mexican Army unit during the Mexican War of 1846. It takes a close look at the organized prejudice against Irish Catholic and German immigrants.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Going to war in Mexico.......2007-07-05

Peter F. Stevens does an outstanding job in bringing to life the issues that permeated and greatly harmed the American armies of General Zachary Taylor and General Winfield Scott from 1846 to 1848. At the core was American nativism, hatred and fear of newly arrived Catholic immigrants mainly from Ireland and Germany. Recruited nearly at the pier, these soldiers had no loyalty nor a real investment in their future as Americans. What loyalty they had was toward their Catholic faith. Meeting them in the army was a cadre of immigrant hating junior officers who often imposed discipline more severe than found in European armies. The result was the highest desertion rate of any war the United States ever fought. More important, the Mexicans took advantage of immigrant soldiers' unhappiness and formed the St. Patrick's Battalion, led by John Reily, that distinguished itself in battle against former comrades and messmates until their defeat and capture. The author shows how severe the courts martial were that resulted in the execution of fifty deserters and the lashing and branding of others including John Reily. That this series of events became a downside of Manifest Destiny and a forerunner of the Civil War becomes prominent in the text. This worthy book is a fine read, well researched, militarily and historically sound, and serves as a real contribution to the field of military and social American history.

5 out of 5 stars For God or Country?.......2003-12-22

An engaging history lesson of both the Mexican-American War and the Anti-Catholic/Immigrant prejudice of Nativists and West Pointers who would later be made famous by the American Civil War. This is as much a story of persecution by bigoted officers as it is an Order of Battle for the conflict. All the major battles of the war are covered with maps and detailed first hand accounts of what happened.

Well-educated and brilliant officers were of differing opinions about the legitimacy of the war, the treatment of German and Irish Catholics, and the tactics used on the field. It was surprising to me to read the correspondence of figures such as Grant, Lee, Sherman, Taylor, Scott, Bragg, and a host of others, illuminating their personal feelings on both sides of those issues and how the experience of the war changed the sentiments and conduct of many of those same officers. This would be reflected in the Civil War some 20 years later.

An intriguing example of the use of "flying batteries" as an innovative use of Artillery showed one of the reasons an outnumbered, and arguably out classed, military was able to defeat an enemy on foreign soil so far away from home.

The story revolves around the main character, the leader of the "San Patricos" and as a counterpoint, an established Irishman settled in the country and the Army. They both faced the same insults and persecutions, and the same offers and temptations to change sides and ironically, both men end up being promoted from enlisted men to commissioned officers in the two opposing armies.

I imagined at first that this would be a story of a man's internal conflict of having to choose loyalty to church over country; though a powerful theme of the book, this was not so much the case. The stronger case was made that the largest desertion rate in the history of the US Army occurred at a time when because of their nationality and religion, men were treated as less deserving of respect and dignity resulting in harsher treatment than "native born Americans". Punishments for identical infractions were much more degrading and humiliating for "foreigners" than for "Americans" in the same unit. A lesson in the effects of fair and equal treatment could not be stronger given to the American Army and indeed this did change. The disturbing part of this history is the undeniable cover up by first the Army and then the Government of the United States for over 120 years. This book should be on the required professional development reading list for Officers and NCOs alike.

Mr. Stevens writing puts emotion and personality to the characters and events described by using copious amounts of official Courts-Martial transcripts, Government Archives records of Great Britain, Ireland, Mexico, and the United States. In addition he draws from the personal diaries, journals, and letters, of the men and women involved. He also cites official war correspondence from the officers of both sides, and newspaper articles of the day.

5 out of 5 stars the rogue's march.......2001-01-09

A must read for the student of Irish-American and Vietnam history. Goes into detail of the anti-Catholic/anti-emmigrant climate of America in the the 1840's. A story of America's first war of agresssion against another independent nation, shows the beggings of Americas imperialistic wars.A good companion text for istorians of America's involvement in South East Asia,"if we do not learn from history we are cursed to repeat it."

4 out of 5 stars A History of Prejudice and Heroism.......2000-04-05

Throughout Mexico, one can hear of the legend of the SanPatricios, a battalion of soldiers in the U.S.-Mexico War that wasmade up almost entirely of deserters from the U.S. Army. Predominately Irish and/or Catholic, the San Patricios fought well for the Mexicans -- and they suffered for it significantly when the U.S. finally won the war.

Stevens does an excellent job of telling the story of the battalion, the history behind its foundation, and the punishment its members faced after the war. Adding to the interest of the story is the role that many of those in the U.S. Army during the U.S.-Mexico War went on to play pivotal roles in the U.S. and CSA armies during the Civil War.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome story.......1999-11-16

Truly awesome story. Well written and researched. Really made me think. Brings up a lot of repressed issues that are difficult to deal with as an American.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Formulaic, But You Know You Love the Formula!.......2003-09-05

Those of us who are fans of the Weisman/Marcinko collaboration know what to expect, and we usually get it. Purple prose, riveting technical realism, and a refreshingly honest look at great men who overcome great odds in spite of malfunctioning equipment, fumbled flash-bang grenades, mashed noses and other Murphy factors. What can I say, I love this stuff. Reading Tom Clancy is like watching a video football game, while Weisman's work is like standing at the 50-yard line with the coach. Weisman understands that great men rise to greatness in spite of their occasional acts of bone-headedness! That's what separates the Rogue Warrior from the rest.

4 out of 5 stars More Doom on Dickie!.......2002-04-24

I confess! Richard Marcinko's semi-autobiographical Rogue Warrior
series is one of my peculiar pleasures. "Red Cell" is still, far and
away, my favoite. But "Echo Platoon" is a treat with a new twist.
...It seems the old Rogue Warrior is starting to feel his age these
days. Even though he spends every free moment at Rogue Manor pumping
massive amounts of iron and honing his fighting and sharpshooting
skills, by his own admission he's having difficulty keeping up with
his young hunters. Sometimes enough to FUBAR the missions he leads.
And he's mellowing in other ways too, such as permitting a female
Marine to accompany the team this time out. But he can still kick that tango butt!
You might have caught the author on TV recently, describing SEAL
tactics in Afghanistan. Anyone else notice his splendid physical
condition? You have little trouble believing him quite capable of his
fictionalized exploits. You know he's intimately familiar with all
the weapons and gear he namedrops throughout his narrative. Despite
his ongoing love-hate relationship with the Navy, you can't help
admiring the Rogue for his swaggering patriotism, his fatherly
affection toward his young shooters, and his bantering, even bullying,
camaraderie with his readers. And then there's his trademark "Ten
Commandments of SPECWAR", which can be equally effective in whatever
non-lethal endeavor you might undertake, be it business to
bodybuilding. Credit also goes to John Weisman, Marcinko's co-author,
for the fast-reading, non-stop excitement and often laugh-out-loud
humor of this series. Sure, Dickie's getting greyer, but don't count
him out of the action yet! You know the old Rogue's got a few more
adventures to come!

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2002-03-15

Hello to all of you Rogue Warrior fans! This is a [great] if you haven't read this book already. I'm not saying that all of them aren't good either, but just to say that this is one of my all time favorites! This story is about the one and only Richard Marckinko and his merry band of hunters, only this time he is in more [situations] than he can stuff in his big old roguish mouth of his. Dick is here in Azerbaijan on some "secret" mission to observe the opposition and to train the Azerbaijanians how to shoot& loot. But that all goes out the window when some professional tangos come in and hijack an oil rig run by some hostile crew. After all the shooting & looting Dick finally realizes he is in deep [trouble]. On top of that, the ambassador is on his case about how he should not be in the country and how it was against the "book" that he could not train the Azerbainians...so all in all this was a good book no matter what others say, despite the language and violence this is absolutely the best series ever!

3 out of 5 stars Always the Rogue.......2001-12-10

Echo Platoon is just like those before it. Lots of blood, guts, cussing and thrill. Nothing here is new except the people who get killed. People should read this book if 1) they want to know more about the capabilities of the military, 2) they want to learn a little more about what happens around the world, 3) the just enjoy plain old action adventures. Stay away from the book if fair writing and extreme use of foul language bothers you. I would prefer Marcinko to quit making asides to his editor during the story. It only seems to help fill up pages. I would also prefer he stay within the action once it starts and identifies people and past events within another part of the book. Once the the hunter is after the prey and the killing begins, stay there. I find myself jumping through some passages just to stay on track with what is happening.
Marcinko will give you a slight sense of the fast-paced action of war and will give you an appreciation for those who still wish to make men of war within our military instead of trying to make the military a social club. I think future books will be even better based on the current status of our country and President Bush's attack attitude favored by Marcinko.

5 out of 5 stars Wow..........2002-06-27

Let me say first off I am a 21 YO computer sci major, and this was one of the best books I have ever read. Richard Marcinko is such an admirable leader and he shares all his tactics with the reader. If only he ran for president. I immediately was sucked into the book, they way the book was written I really felt like I was along for the ride, and oh what a ride it was. Marcinko's books are so enthralling that it even makes me think about joining the milliatry, just so I could follow in his footsteps, and if I wasn't almost done with school, I just might've done it. Forget what you see in movies, or what you think you know about the millitary/SEALs, Marcinko is the real thing, and he'll set you straight.

4 out of 5 stars Task Force Blue is entertaining.......2002-03-14

In the way that karate movies are entertaining. Lots of cool action parts and a storyline that doesn't quite make it to good.

The writing style is very similar to all of his sequels to the original Rogue Warrior book. Not quite redundant in my opinion, but almost.

A decent enough story, really good slam-bang double-tap action, I'd only recommend this book only to fans of action-adventure books and fans of Richard Marcinko.

4 out of 5 stars Marcinko Strikes Again!.......2001-07-08

This is another thriller in the Rogue Warrior series. Through his experiences as a U.S. Navy Seal Marcinko has been enabled to write some very entertaining books. His vast knowledge of types of weapons and special operations manuevers make his books quite believable. In this book Marcinke and his troops are matched up against an evil ruthless billionaire. Despite the man's over- whelming wealth Marcinko is still able to prevail. As usual there is nonstop action. The ending of this book is also very unique. Be sure to read this book. You will be greatly entertained.Dick Marcinko has written another good book.
