Book Description
Judith McNaught's last enchanting bestseller, Until You, was hailed as "brilliantly done and completely entertaining... ripe plot twists... a fine supporting cast" (Ocala Star-Banner). Now, with more than fourteen million books in print and seven New York Times bestsellers, Judith McNaught brings us her latest, most enthralling novel...
REMEMBER WHEN
When multinational tycoon Cole Harrison approached her on a moonlit balcony at the White Orchid Charity Ball, Diana Foster had no idea how extraordinary the night ahead would be. The most lavish social event of the Houston season had brought out American aristocracy, Texas-style, in glittering array. So, after losing her fiancé to a blond Italian heiress and reading about it in a sleazy gossip paper, the lovely Diana felt obliged to make an appearance-if only to save face and to bolster her company's image. Foster's Beautiful Living magazine was her family's sucess story, and Diana knew that, single, childless, and suddenly unengaged, she was not living up to its lucrative image of upscale domestic tranquility. A women of gentle grace and kindness, Diana deeply valued her privacy and her dignity, both of which were at risk that night among certain rumor-driven socialites. And now the pride of Dallas billionaires, Cole Harrison, was closing in on her with two crystal flutes and a bottle of champagne...
The tall, lithe former stableboy couldn't negotiate his way out of a contract with his crusty uncle, Cal-he had to bring home a wife, and soon, or see Cal's share of the business Cole had created go to an undeserving relative. A man as coolly analytical as he was arrestingly attractive, Cole decided that his bride-to-be should be rich in her own right, meltingly beautiful, and a woman of impeccable character... Diana Foster! It was the perfect to their respective dilemmas, and, after a lot of champagne for Diana and some skilled persuasion from Cole, their lips met in a long, slow, bargain-sealing kiss. Neither one dared imagine that a match made in logic's heaven might be headed straight for an unexpected, once-in-a-lifetime love...
Once again, Judith McNaught creates an unforgettable world filled with her "very special of dazzling wit, passion, and tender sensuality" (Romantic Times). As a proud woman and a wary man begin to taste the delights and the treacheries of romance, the drama smolders deliciously in this suspenseful, richly satisfying novel. Graced with a deep understanding of love's surprises, it's a tale that can only come from a supremely gifted storyteller, one who makes us so happy to...REMEMBER WHEN.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent writing, good plot, poor delivery.......2007-09-20
McNaught's writing is first-rate, up there with Julie Garwood, Gaelen Foley, Mary Jo Putney, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, etc. So I am not going to criticize her writing in this book because it was indeed, as expected, first-rate.
So why only 3 stars? After reading "Paradise," I was excited about this one because it featured a similar storyline -- poor service boy from wrong side of tracks works his way up the corporate ladder and comes back to woo his high-society debutante childhood friend. While I felt the storyline was great, I didn't think McNaught did such a good job telling it. The first 100 pages were very promising, and the character development was top-notch McNaught quality. However, the next 200 pages dragged out, and I sometimes wondered if I was still reading a romance novel or a business journal instead. In the 400+ pages of romance, there was only 1 two-page love scene (not counting the vague hints of the heroine's drunken wedding night), and we don't even see that until the very end of the novel. Perhaps if her book was marketed as "Fiction" instead of "Romance," I would not have felt so misled and ended up so disappointed.
Plus 3 stars for the excellent writing and plot, minus 2 stars for the flat delivery, 200+ pages of unnecessary corporation detail, and lack of romance in what was advertised and sold as being a "romance novel." McNaught's Remember When is good fiction, but not good romance.
I've read better..........2007-09-06
I've read a few of JM's books, and they are good but somehow they don't have any conclusions to storylines they started. For example, at the beginning of the book, Cole has a sexy, smart girlfriend and doesn't want to get married OR have kids. Then next time he's single. It doesn't say why or when or anything they broke up. He's so adament about not getting married or having kids that I was shocked when, after making love to Diana, he has a sudden revelation that he wants all that stuff after being together A WEEK. It doesn't give us a reason why he doesn't, but the reader has to infer it from his past. They both have successful businesses and it's like those don't matter, that they can pick up and move half a company by the next day. It was an ok read, but it left something to be desired. There were too many incomplete storylines and the only resolution I saw was that they were married and lived happily ever after. Not very believeable.
Remember When.......2007-03-12
One of the greats from Ms. McNaught...I know she needs to have "a life" but I wish she would stay in her study until she cranks some more books out - I've read every one and they are all stories that can keep me reading until the wee hours of the morning. (Whitney, My Love has a bit much angst, but again, a McNaught classic.) She has surpassed Kathleen Woodiwiss in my esteem for writing a wonderful historical romance novel.
Not her best but still worth a read!.......2006-10-17
I have read a few of Judith Mcnaught's books and would agree with many of the reviews that this is not her best book ever. However I would not discount this as a bad novel. It is a good romance that passes away a pleasant afternoon. The story does start strong but gets a little weak in the middle and I would have liked more story at the end. It was a good plot and I did enjoy it. I would re-read it but maybe not as many times as some of her others.
Is It Good To 'Remember When' Or Go For It?.......2006-07-30
Sometimes 'remember when' is what we say when things are bad, and they were good 'then.' To rise above hardship, you should follow your instincts which tell you to do something that defies logic and upsets your plans. The main thing is to listen to your instincts and go for it. Diana's mother had died when she was five and she'd grown up with material things and wealth. Cole had been a groom in the stables of a neighbor of hers when she was fourteen, and she was friendly to him.
During the seventeen years between then and now, they'd gone their separate ways. Cole had become a billionaire in the electronis business and came to the dance in Houston after she had been jilted amid rumors. As a child, she was able to bravely hold back her tears of pain and fright (as motherless girls do); now, a woman's emotions and feelings erupted and she could not hide the seemingly 'hurt beyond all endurance.' At age 31, she had been deserted for an 18-yr-old model named Christiana and that yellow journalism tabloid, 'National Inquirer,' showed the man she thought she loved, Dan, on his honeymoon in Italy.
Cole to the rescue. Actually, he needed a wife to inherit the family business and Diana's situation paved the way to "marry up" in society and keep the electronics business he'd built for the uncle who was demanding that he bring home a wife. He used her weak emotional state to solve both their dilemmas. She needed a strong man to protect her and he fit the bill. He wanted a rich wife while she needed to 'save face.' At first, they were tricking an unethical 'Inquirer' reporter (negative press and prying cameras) who hid in the shadows: "You let the world think of you as a discarded woman, or you can let them see you kissing me."
Male chauvinist -- he was kissing her! An attractive, silver-haired 6'2" hunk, he'd made the list of 'Cosmopolitan' as one of t he "world's 50 most eligible bachelors." He gallantly came to her rescue, for his own purposes, and she showed her appreciation. Southern women are like that. He clearly took advantage of her emotional distress, lured her into bed, then a marriage of convenience. Men are like that. Persuing the elusive dream to discover later that it was a 'mistake' which had to be lived with and endured.
Some are more successful than others. "Remember when Cal (his uncle) wanted heirs at any cost." As they watched the 4th of July fireworks in Dallas (a spectacle similar to Boomsday the weekend before Labor Day in Knoxville), they both remembered when they were young and innocent in Houston. It was a drastic change for both; she'd had her dreams which didn't work out, and he charmed her as the country singer did to the comic actress, 'Nurse Betty,' which didn't work out either. It was like something out of the early Rosemary Rogers' novels of tempetuous relationships.
Book Description
In this book, France's leading medical anthropologist takes on one of the most tragic stories of the global AIDS crisis--the failure of the ANC government to stem the tide of the AIDS epidemic in South Africa. Didier Fassin traces the deep roots of the AIDS crisis to apartheid and, before that, to the colonial period.
One person in ten is infected with HIV in South Africa, and President Thabo Mbeki has initiated a global controversy by funding questionable medical research, casting doubt on the benefits of preventing mother-to-child transmission, and embracing dissidents who challenge the viral theory of AIDS. Fassin contextualizes Mbeki's position by sensitively exploring issues of race and genocide that surround this controversy. Basing his discussion on vivid ethnographical data collected in the townships of Johannesburg, he passionately demonstrates that the unprecedented epidemiological crisis in South Africa is a demographic catastrophe as well as a human tragedy, one that cannot be understood without reference to the social history of the country, in particular to institutionalized racial inequality as the fundamental principle of government during the past century.

New emotions, new friends, and physical changes make the teen years hard enough to deal with, but when someone close dies, life as a teen can seem almost unbearable. I Will Remember You encourages young readers to explore the "long, winding tunnel" of the grieving process, to keep going in the face of terrible loss and sadness. Through stirring words by well-known personalities (E.B. White, Emily Dickinson, Rainer Maria Rilke, Dr. Seuss, Mother Teresa, Woody Allen, even Pooh and Piglet!), as well as from fellow teens who have lost a loved one, grieving teens can begin to take comfort that they're not alone.
Each chapter helps readers explore different aspects of grief, such as denial, ritual, remembering, mourning a stranger, and anniversary "aftershocks." Renowned grief counselor Elena Lister, M.D., offers advice based on her many years of professional experience, and author Laura Dower presents dozens of creative, helpful exercises to move through the experience of loss. As Dower writes in her preface, this book does not provide "the 'right' answers or tell you how or what to feel." Instead, it's more like a "grief map. It helps you to see the path, but it can't tell you where to go." One of the most useful (and impressive) elements of the book is the very sensitive section on what not to say to someone who is grieving (and possible responses to these statements): "You'll get over it. Do you want to tell me when?" "Your mother/father lived a full life. How do you define full?" Of course, Dower also includes a list of more thoughtful, appropriate statements: "I am sorry. How can I help?" "What was your relationship like?" With the gentle help of this guidebook, grieving teens may just make it a little farther through that long, winding tunnel. (Ages 13 and older) --Emilie Coulter

An amazing book.......2004-02-16
I was 14 years old when my father passed away suddenly. My mom bought me this book about a month after he passed away. It helped me so much. It guided me through much of the first year or so. It was by my side when I went through the first easter, his birthday and my parents anniversary without him. I don't know what I would have done without this book. I would highly recommend this to any teen who has lost someone close to them. Or to any adult wanted to understand what teens go through after losing someone close.
An Inspiring, Important and Beautifully-Done Book.......2001-07-19
I Will Remember You addresses one of the most-overlooked and difficult issues in growing up, offering readers inspiring and important ideas to deal with grief. Although this is a guidebook for teens, as a parent, I found the information incredibly helpful in helping my children understand the grieving process. Dower's accesssible, well-written passages--along with the real-life writing from teens--illuminates the feelings associated with getting through grieving. This is a terrific resource for parents, teachers, librarians and yes, teenagers.
As if it spoke to me.......2001-06-07
My father died three years ago when I was thirteen. I have never read a book that depicts my feelings so accurately. It is ideal for any teen that is overcoming grief but also for any parent who wishes to understand the grief that their teenager is dealing with.
Coming from a contributor.......2001-05-04
I was a contributor to this book and had known about this project a couple years ago when I wrote my piece. I wasn't sure what I was getting into. I thought it was probably just another Chicken Soup like book. However, I was wrong. This book is the most amazing thing I've seen for teens who are suffering with grief and at the time I was going through everything I would have given my soul for a book like this. I am really proud to have been a part of this project and I found it helpful even today. I hope a lot of grief stricken teens pick this book up. It is truly amazing.

multigenerational good time!.......2007-10-10
I am totally hooked on JD Robb, but haven't really gotten into Nora Roberts' other books, mostly because I don't have a high opinion of most romance writers. REMEMBER WHEN has changed my mind about reading Roberts' other books. REMEMBER WHEN kept my interest thru-out the entire book and I loved seeing "the next generation" from the 1st half followed thru in the 2nd half. Lane is every bit the tough gal hero that Dallas is even tho' she is a completely different character. Kudos to Roberts for developing Lane's history with her dad and weaving it into the story so naturally. In the 2nd half, the problems for Eve and Roarke because of his former lover added an interesting dimension (especially re Somerset). The grandson-bad-guy was somewhat formulaic and predictable, but I'm too in love w/ Eve's & Roarke's world to object strongly. Good story, interesting twists and turns. Hope all Roberts' non JD Robb novels hold the same in store for me because it's a long dry spell between one JD Robb novel and the next.
A 56 Year Diamond Recovery.......2007-09-28
Since this novel is in two parts, I will review it in two parts
PART I
Laine Tavish has worked hard to escape her past. All though she loves her con man father, John O'Hara, Laine knows she can't live his life. Now, she has established a new life, and owns the antique store Remember When. Thinking Laine's old life is gone, she is shocked when she sees her fathers old friend stumble in, and is more shocked when he dies moments later. Soon, investigator Max Gannon apears, investigating a diamond hiest, perpatrated by Laine's father and another man named Alex Crew. Crew is killing off all the men involved in the hiest, and its only a matter of time before he goes after Laine to.
PART II
Samantha Gannon has written a book on the diamond hiest that her great grandfather was involved in, bringing new attention to the case. The last thing Samantha expects though, is finding her room mate murdered. Trevor Whitter, Alex Crew's grand son, has come. One fourth of the diamonds were never recovered, and Trevor belives Samantha know's where they are. The only people who can stop him, are Lt. Eve Dallas, with assistant Peabody, and husband Roarke in tow(even though she doesn't want him to be). This will prove to be Eve's most difficult case, with the answer to Where ar the Diamonds? laying 56 years in the past.
Two writers, one woman, one amazing story.
I loved it. .......2007-03-29
I really enjoyed Remember When and realized by the time I got to the second portion of the book (futuristic 2059 with Lt. Eve Dallas), that I had indeed read another JB Robb novel. And no, I did not realize that Nora Roberts and JB Robb were one in the same. The book took place in the early 2003 (I think). The story revolves around a diamond heist, named the largest in New York history. Laine Tavish has created a new life for herself. Running from her past and her father, who is a reknown theif, Laine has settled into a quiet community and opened an antique store. Her long lost uncle reappears and is quickly killed, leaving a mystery of who is after Laine and why. Also, appearing around the same time is a handsome and mysterious stranger who unknown to Laine is an investigator trying to track down the diamonds, that he believes are in her possession. After several murders and a lot of romance, the story moves quickly and eventually to the bad guy getting his due and a small portion of the diamonds still missing.
Fast forward 56 years, and we find that Laine's granddaughter has written a book that deals with the heist. While she is away on a book tour, her best friend is murdered in her home and the place is ransacked. Lietenant Eve Dallas and her handy sidekick Peabody are on the scene and ready to solve the mystery. As the story evolves, we see just how the diamond heist is related to the present day problems. Although this portion of the book barely focuses on Laine's granddaughter, I found it well written and interesting. As I said earlier, I realized that I have read a novel about Eve and her dashing and sexy, Irish husband Roarke. I really enjoy their relationship and the constant mentioning of their rocky pasts, especially Eve. I will make an effort to read other Robb novels to find out her past. I think she is a fascinating character that I can't wait to read more about.
But, no matter what...I think Remember When is worth reading. Especially if you are going on a long car ride or plane trip.
Roberts and Robb...what a team!.......2007-01-21
I'm pretty sure everyone knows that Nora Roberts and JD Robb are one in the same woman...one of the best writers in modern times! Well, teaming these two sides together in one volume was brilliant! In the first story, Laine Tavish is trying to live down a less than reputable past, when trouble comes and finds her in small town Angel's Gap. It's up to Max Gannon to find out if she has anything to do with the missing jewels. What they find together is something worth more than the jewels. In the second part of the story, Max and Laine's granddaughter has written a book and told the story of the missing jewels, of Max and Laine. Now, death seems to be dogging her heels, and it's up to Eve Dallas to finally put things to right.
A brilliant, engrossing story!
Not the Best.......2006-08-09
Overall, the book was enjoyable and I thought the idea of spliting into a "Nora Roberts" story and a "J.D. Robb" story was interesting. I enjoy reading the books from both her personas. However, the second half of the novel was very weak. Perhaps because some of the characters that I really enjoy in the Robb universe got little to no air time - such as Nadine, Mira, Mavis. I was also disappointed that Laine and Max didn't show up in part two until the very very end. Oh well, I suppose it was an experiment in writing, but I wouldn't look forward to another split adventure.

Grandma book great keepsake.......2007-01-20
My granddaughter bought me the book for Christmas 2 years ago, and it took a lot of memory work, research into family history, and asking my own mother to get the answers to the dozens of questions it asked.
When it was finished, though, it was, indeed, a real keepsake journal, and I gave the completed book back to my granddaughter for Christmas this year. In fact, I ordered 2 more books for my two other granddaughters.
It was a lot of writing, some of the questions were redundant, and some questions didn't leave enough space for an adequate answer. Otherwise, it was great.

Tender Tale!.......2005-05-02
Book three, REMEMBER WHEN in the Americana series is an insightful story of finding out your heart's desire may not be out of reach and could well be worth the effort trying to obtain it.
Although each one of the four books in the series: 1. WHERE THE HEART IS 2. FOREVER, ROSE 3. REMEMBER WHEN 4. KISS ME, KATIE can stand alone, it's my recommendation you read the books in order. Many of Homestead, Idaho's secondary characters are first and thoroughly described in book one and are carried through storylines in FOREVER ROSE and REMEMBER WHEN. Many stories of the town's original characters descendents continues on in KISS ME, KATIE. Some becoming new main characters and of course, it's always a treat to revisit the ones we grew to love.
Inspiring & heart warming.......2000-10-29
This is my third book of Robin Lee Hatcher. My first book of hers was the FOREVER, ROSE. I was deeply taken by that book so I bought the sequels. Had I known earlier that this is a series, I would have read the book in order. Anyway, much to my surprise, REMEMBER WHEN is even better, it's more heart warming than the FOREVER ROSE & WHERE THE HEART IS. Reading the first two books of course, gave more impact on this one. I am now in the process of reading Kiss me, Katie. I suggest the reader to read the Americana Series in order. It'll make a huge difference.
Here's the series in sequence:
1st: WHERE THE HEART IS ------> 2nd: FOREVER,ROSE --------> 3rd: REMEMBER WHEN ------------> 4th: Kiss me, Katie.
I have read many sequel books and normally, the second/third books of any sequel novels aren't as good as the first one anymore. Even though I haven't read the whole series yet (one more to go), I think it is now fair to say that I find all three books satisfying. Each book gets better, story get more exciting.
The Americana series is about a town called Homestead, Idaho. The creation of the town beginning with just few families in small farm houses, one main street and only few stores to it's booming times with railroads and big hotels. I have only read three of the series but so far, it makes me feel like I am in the town itself. There are many characters aside from the two primary couples. It contains love stories as well as family and neighborly love scenes. Many heart warming scenes of people helping one another. Like every small town, everyone knows everybody's business and gossips cannot be avoided. Though I find that flaw amusing in many ways. My favorite aside from the romance story is that each book contains many updates of the characters from the previous book. I also enjoy reading books about children and their growing up years especially if they become the couple in the next book. It is like keeping track of a mini series in T.V.. This is what makes the series so interesting from the beginning to the end.
REMEMBER WHEN is a love story of Tom/Fanny and Sara/Jeremiah. The way R.L.H wrote their romance is simply inspiring. Started out as friends developing into something special. I specially like the way R.L.H wrote Jeremiah. The more you read, the more you understand his fears of loving again. Meanwhile, here's Sara reaching out to him. Tom's unconditional friendship then love for Fanny, who was first judged by most town people for working in the Pony Saloon. Then later, the acceptance. The unusual circumstances & the twist of story makes this book more exciting. Tom & Sara's brother-sister realtionship gave an additional warmth to this book. I had to finish it in one sitting. Otherwise, it'll leave me thinking about it the whole day. GET IT & READ IT!
This was a sweet love story.......1998-05-06
I really enjoyed this book, I like the sweet western romance novels and this one fits the bill. I also like the way she has two love stories going at one time. If you like older LaVryle Spencer, and Dorthy Garlock books I think you will like this.
Customer Reviews:
Could have been better.......2003-07-05
I've read the original South Carolina Volumes of the WPA Slave Narratives that this book was edited from. This book could have been a whole lot better. While the current editor did a good job of making the SC African-American dialect more accessible to lay readers (even she admits to having trouble with printed versions of this dialect), many of the better stories were either highly edited or left out, such as Elijah Green's Reconstruction Narrative that was heavily edited and Isreal Nesbitt's recollections of the Vesey Rebellion, which aren't included.
However, to the layman and non-historian, this is a good start in understanding slavery from the sources. Some interesting stories do remain, such as the Union County narrative about the Ku Klux Klan. So it's good for starters. The Tennessee and Georgia anthologies in this series are better, though.
Before Freedom by Belinda Hurmence.......2002-05-23
This book was given to me by my social studies teacher as an extra credit reading assignment, so I read it just for the credit thinking that I would hate it. Little did I know how many metaphors and parallels to my life I would find. When I finished the book, I could not believe what some slaves had gone through. There were many theories that came out of this book, including that for many slaves, freedom was a two-edged sword. Yet to figure out what I mean by that, you will have to read the book yourself! I would strongly recommend this book to any 8th grade social studies teachers teaching the Civil War who want to make an impact on their students and wake them up to realize that history repeats itself and that the "killing of an old person is like the burning of a book in a library" - Mrs. Mahoney (my awesome 8th grade social studies teacher)!
Want to know what slavery was like? Ask a former slave........1999-10-27
A fantastic book that reveals the details of slave life through personal interviews of former slaves. Throw away the history books, forget what you learned in social studies, this is real. The book is printed using the dialects of the interviewees, so you almost feel as if you can hear the person speaking. A great read. Difficult to put it down once you pick it up.
Very good representation of what slaves thought.......1999-04-19

Book Description
I Remember When presents dozens of activities which help people reminisce and tell stories about their lives. The authors emphasize using the senses when reminiscing with people with dementia. One section describes an activity called Bring-A-Thing which is a lot like Show and Tell where people bring an item to the discussion such as a recipe or a piece of jewelry which helps trigger memories. Particularly useful are the numerous, easy-to-use conversation starters which can be used in groups or between individuals. In the book, the authors have gathered together the best ideas related to reminiscing and storytelling from the best experts in the world. Everything in I Remember When is based on research, and has been field-tested in urban, surburban and rural communities, in business organizations, with board members of national corporations, shurch and synagogue groups, and many other groups. The book is based on the authors' 20+ years of research which suggests that when people reminisce, they have a better sense of wellbeing, greater feelings of community, and an important awareness of their useful contributions to others.

The Power and Empowerment of Reminiscence.......2000-06-18
What an articulate, inclusive, and ground-breaking source is I Remember When! I gained insight into the benefits of effective communication skills and learned more about aging and story-sharing. I was also made aware of the the health benefits of reminiscing. Thorsheim and Roberts have produced an invaluable resource and activity guide for psychologists, reminiscence volunteers, and anyone else who is interested in increasing their self and other-awareness through reminiscence. It has my stamp of approval!
