5 out of 5 stars Delivers as advertised..........2007-09-29

Far too often I have picked up a self-help book and either set it down unread because it was pure drudgery - - or I read it to conclusion to learn that it failed to deliver the self-help mechanics that I was looking for. This book delivered. It was a quick and entertaining read and provided straightforward techniques for dealing with tough questions in a debate, a business presentation or public Q&A. Author uses many political debate anecdotes yet they are all powerful in illustrating his concepts. I was left with an excellent understanding of his recommended mechanics in dealing with tough questions. I felt that the book delivered. The chapters included:

1) The Critical Dynamics of Q&A
2) Effective Management Implemented
3) You're Not Listening
4) Active Listening (Concentration)
5) Re-Take the Floor (Self-Defense)
6) Provide the Answer (Balance)
7) Topspin in Action (Agility)
8) Preparation (Discipline)
9) The Art of War (Self-Control; Agility vs. Force)

Wow! In short, that's how I felt reading thru the book. Very well written and a must for someone who is into presentations. Talks about how to view the presentation from a listener perspective. Would certainly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent price/knowledge ration.......2006-10-30

Excellent book about dynamics of debating, Q&A sessions and challanging questions.
I'm sure, even a mommy would benefit of knowledge gained by this book... but if you are in a leader position, or contact with audience.. you must simply read and understand this book.

I'm a project manager, and ocassionally the behaviour of my co-workers made me angry. I had at least the wisdom, to not confront, just ingore them (but then, I was unhappy, 'swallowing' their verbal attacks).
Now I have at least have the idea, how to respond: '...those who render others' armies helpless without fighting are the best of all'.

So main point: you have to overcome your instinct and learn the new skills.
Excellent book. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars If You Ever Find Yourself In the Line of Fire..........2006-09-23

In the Line of Fire focuses on the process and dynamics of answering questions in front of important audiences. It provides excellent mechanics to prepare for formal Q&A sessions as well as ad hoc situations. The book is rich in anecdotes - although it may go a bit too far analyzing U.S. Presidential election debates over the past 30 years.

The process and tactics presented in the book complement the more simplistic (yet effective!) guidelines provided in Great Demo! (ISBN 059534559X). In the Line of Fire is an excellent resource for the advancing presenter/demo practitioner and the seasoned veteran.

This is one of a series of books by Jerry Weissman on presentation skills and methods, including Presenting to Win (ISBN 0131875108) - which I also recommend.

5 out of 5 stars In the line of fire.......2006-08-14

As and educator and someone who deals with the public at Board of Education meetings, PTA/PTSO meetings, and in other similar formats, a book that describes a process for effective communication is valuable. This book helps the reader to answer difficult questions and communicate effectively. The book should be required reading for administrators as answering a question effectively is important for success.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good reading.......2007-01-06

The books written by WEB Griffin are good reading and enjoyable. They have kept my interest and look forward to the next book everytime I end reading one. I spent several years in the Corps and come from a family of Marines so these book certainly keep my interest.

5 out of 5 stars The Corps series continues.......2005-10-04

I've read all the WEB Griffin novels several times. The Corps series is the best although the Argentina series (Honor Bound) is close. The best novel standing alone is the first one, Semper Fi. The next two or three are an obvious series and do not stand alone as well. They all provide insights that straight history may overlook. Griffin knows some of these people. He served in Korea so the later Korea series gains authenticity. Some object to the progression of Corporal McCoy to McCoy the super linguist. There is a touch of the comic book to some of his exploits but this is fiction. The story of the Inchon landing in Under Fire is true. The story told in Behind the Lines is true. I have a copy of Eric Feldt's book about the Coastwatchers. That was true. Griffin is the best source for military culture in fiction. His details are accurate. Maybe the Magic intercepts weren't quite as complete as he tells us they were but that was all based on truth and he brings it to life. If you are interested in World War II in the Pacific, these books are indispensible. The only thing that touches them is Once an Eagle.

5 out of 5 stars A Marine never leaves anyone behind.......2004-09-23

This book is all about the Marine code of never leaving anyone behind. Fleming Pickering puts together a team to pull two of their men off a tropical island. They have been left there for quite some time in order to be part of the Coast Watchers that were placed throughout the South Pacific. Their purpose was to keep an eye on what the Japanese were doing in order to maintain the US position in Guadalcanal. The thing I really like about these books is the characters that Griffin has portrayed. I feel like I know each and every one of them. I like the history lesson about the war in the Pacific as well. I have to admit - I am hooked on this series.

1 out of 5 stars A Waste of Time.......2003-01-14

I picked up these books hoping to gain some insight into the actions of the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II. What I found instead was a sort of soap opera that rambles on for hundreds of pages without getting around to much actual fighting. For example, The Marines don't even get to Guadalcanal (their first major offensive) until the end of book III, some 1200 pages into the story. Those 1200 intervening pages are mostly conversations (ad nauseam) between stateside Marine Corps officers as they sit around headquarters, or go out on the town chasing skirts.

The small portion of the books that is devoted to actual battles is done in such a cursory fashion that you're left with the impression that the author either finds this aspect of the Marines' mission distasteful, or doesn't understand it well enough to write about it. Mr. Griffin could have deleted about 80% of his material, and would have ended up with better books, albeit still not good ones.

If you're the sort of person who likes to watch daytime soap operas, then you may enjoy these books. If, on the other hand, you're interested in military history, the banality of these books will leave you screaming in frustration.

5 out of 5 stars A very excellent, interest keeping book.......2000-04-13

I'm current reading Line Of Fire and I'm almost done with it and I think its really great I've never had a military book go into such detail, well I take that back this one and one other book I've read has gone in as much detail as this. I really love the way W.E.B. Griffin writes he's really good and I'm gonna read more of his books. I hope those who like stuff on the military (esp., the Corps like myself), will look into the books by W.E.B. Griffon, cause he writes really good.

Book Description

According to Time magazine, Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf holds "the world's most dangerous job." He has twice come within inches of assassination. His forces have caught more than 670 members of al Qaeda in the mountains and cities, yet many others remain at large and active, including Osama bin Laden and Ayman Al Zawahiri. Long locked in a deadly embrace with its nuclear neighbor India, Pakistan has come close to full-scale war on two occasions since it first exploded a nuclear bomb in 1998. As President Musharraf struggles for the security and political future of his nation, the stakes could not be higher for the world at large.

It is unprecedented for a sitting head of state to write a memoir as revelatory, detailed, and gripping as In the Line of Fire. Here, for the first time, readers can get a firsthand view of the war on terror in its central theater. President Musharraf details the manhunts for Osama and Zawahiri and their top lieutenants, complete with harrowing cat-and-mouse games, informants, interceptions, and bloody firefights. He tells the stories of the near-miss assassination attempts, not only against himself but against Shaukut Aziz (later elected prime minister) and one of his top army officers (later the vice chief of army staff), and of the abduction and beheading of Daniel Pearl -- as well as the forensic and shoe-leather investigations that uncovered the perpetrators. He details the army's mountain operations that have swept several valleys clean, and he talks about the areas of North Waziristan where al Qaeda is still operating.

Yet the war on terror is just one of the many headline-making subjects in In the Line of Fire. The full story of the events that brought President Musharraf to power in 1999 is told for the first time. He reveals new details of the 1999 confrontation with India in Kashmir (the Kargil conflict) and offers a proposal for resolving the Kashmir dispute.

He offers a portrait of Mullah Omar, with stories of Pakistan's attempts to negotiate with him. Concerning A. Q. Khan and his proliferation network, he explains what the government knew and when it knew it, and he reveals fascinating details of Khan's operations and the investigations into them.

In addition, President Musharraf takes many stances that will make news. He calls for the Muslim world to recognize Israel once a viable Palestinian state is created. He urges the repeal of Pakistan's 1979 Hudood law. He calls for the emancipation of women and for their full political equality with men. He tells the sad story of Pakistan's experience with democracy and what he has done to make it workable.

2 out of 5 stars Good read but sensationalist and opinionated!.......2007-06-01

Disclaimer - I support no political organization and do not have an 'Indian' mindset. I was born in Pakistani middle class, educated family (just like Musharraf) and consider myself 'Pakistani' to the core.

Review - This book is an interesting read but one should not expect a sitting head of state to publish a book that is 'honest'. For that matter, its naive to expect any politician to write a book that details facts honestly and analyzes them objectively.
The book is a narrative of the 'great' things Musharraf is doing for Pakistan. Its a narrative of self-praise and vitriolic spite for enemies. I would take all facts stated with a pinch of salt.
Finally, the timing of the book, when YOU are the sitting head of a country, is a way to make a quick buck with blatant disregard of the ruckus your self-eulogy will cause.

The facts speak for themselves:
1. Musharraf continues to remain a sole monarch where the Chief Justice, the guardian of law and order, is forced to resign by men in uniform.
2. Poverty and inflation are rampant at the same time. The rich drive inflation high and the poor become more poor.
3. Crime is rampant, people get mugged, shot at during daylight. Every urban family has experienced a car-jacking at gun point.
4. Corruption has permeated every government and semi-goverment organization. Religious clerics have declared bribery justified because without it nothing gets done.

This is the 7 year legacy Musharraf intends to leave behind, assuming that he intends to or forced to leave, ever. The same legacy left by Bhuttos' or Nawazs'

3 out of 5 stars Read between the lines.......2007-05-27

Chinua Achebe once said that ,"Until the lions write their own history, story of hunt will only glorify the hunter", and in the dense forest of Pakistani politics no one can say who is hunting whom or who deserves the glorification? . Reading the chapter Coup where Nawaz Sharif is the hunter and Musharraf the glorious lion who will came out victorious luckily and eventually was real fun. As I did not approach the book in search of some political truth so i did not get my heart swell or mind numb in an attempt to weigh the truth________ burning In The Line of Fire! However i felt like coining new words such as 'stubborn confidence', 'humble pride', and above all 'dictocracy'. Despite his secret prayers to serve the country as a President( to seek sole power) he remains innocent as to why God has chosen him for this difficult task of steering the nation aright. Little did he know that with pains men come to greater pains and this was exactly what he had come to. And one wonders why a man has to be a president to serve his nation why not serve any other way...or perhaps its the juicy seat after all!

Worth appraisal are his views regarding education, economics , women's emancipation and tourism. No doubt they are well articulated but how you achieve them is as important as how you say it. Just hope he has wits enough to translate these ideas into practice rationally. I must quote :

"To speak now of the true temper of empire, it is a thing rare and hard to keep; for both temper, and distemper, consist of contraries. But it is one thing, to mingle contraries, another to interchange them." (Bacon)

I wish that a cultural unification is achieved through media and spirit of Nationalism is inculcated one that is in keeping with our ideologies. This is to say that Musharraf must take care in not interchanging national values and interest . Pakistan needs a mingling of contrary elements(such as secularism ,fundamentalism etc ) in order to produce a moderate decent state. After reading the book i could see that Musharraf wants to inculcate nationalism to project 'soft image' of Pakistan through the means of cultural unification and polarity. The thought is brilliant but on the other hand the wise man himself is seeing in to the vast breach between civilian politicians and Army and then again in the army itself!

Kargil event is one example of the gulf between the politicians and the army . I cant see how in a country where everything is divided good will can multiply? This is not provocative cynicism but awake one to the need of unity. Anyhow Kargil heroes i believe deserved the glorious justification that has been given to them. Moving on words the chapters narrating his choice to help America in anti-terror war were not convincing. The lines in the review that he is doing "single most crucial job in the global war on terror',... were mostly likely written to attract the readers all over the world. The fact however is that Musharraf's ambivalence has baffled all__the reader ,the Nation and the World! This is what i think makes him a true politician.

3 out of 5 stars Take it with a grain of salt.......2007-05-23

Musharaff is an important figure, and he has an interesting tale to tell. He begins when he was about five years old, and Pakistan was breaking away from India. Musharaff tells of his life story, from the time he left India to live in what is now Pakistan, to the time he spent in Turkey, to his return to Pakistan, and his rise to power. Along the way are several frightening attempts on his life. The book is readable and informative.

The big question is whether you want to believe anything Musharaff says. I do not know enough to question any of the specifics, but some of what he says seems self-serving, e.g., his account of a border skirmish with India which he claims he "won" and his rise to power. My sense is that he is not to be trusted, but I just do not know enough to say. If you are willing to keep an open mind, however, it is an interesting read.

One small thing that bugged me -- Musharaff claims to be a math wiz, yet he keeps making the same simple mistake over and over. If something grew from 5 to 10, he says it grew 200%. I suppose if it "grew" from 5 to 5, he would claim it grew 100%. I know that sounds petty, but here is a man who claims to be best in his class in math, and to understand how to run an economy, and he keeps making the same silly mistake!

5 out of 5 stars HE IS ARROGANT FOR GOOD REASON !!.......2007-04-30

It is interesting to note that most of the people writing the review on this book are indians . Their hatred for pakistan has deep rooted historical reasons. I am a pakistani born american living in California, and am well aware of what Musharaff has done for Paksitan and America alike.
He has single handedly redefined the fate of a nation.
Economic Progress (7% in the last 5 yrs)
Free Media (from one state owned tv channel to 43 pvt ones right now) Automobile Production rising from 40,000 cars per year in 2001 to 250,000 per annum in 2007.
Karachi Stock Exchange capitalisation was $5 billion dollars in 2001 . It stands at $57 billion right now.

These are all hardcore achievements. Which need to be celebrated. Thankyou !!! Mr. President .

4 out of 5 stars Interesting perspective from the "other side".......2007-04-09

Being from the Indian side of the sub-continent, I bought this book to get a historical perspective from the other (Pakistani) side. The General writes with candor and provides interesting insights about his early life and upbringing. He also provides a unique perspective on the role of the army in the Pakistan national life. His narrative of Kargil had its elements of fiction and self-righteous posturing. Same with the treatment of the 1971 war. It was disappointing not to learn more about Zia's demise. Overall, an interesting read.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-10-20

Line of Duty seemed to be right off the pages of a current newspaper. I think it is the very best in the Newpointe 911 series. It was so good that after a few pages I emailed Terri Blackstock and asked for another book to this series that she thinks is finished. I hope it will continue.

Terri Blackstock is a very gifted author. Her characters could be the people next door or down the street.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-03-22

I have read every book in the Newpointe 911 series, and I must say that Line of Duty is my favorite. I always loved Dan and Jill, and to see how they survive this tragedy. Once you pick up one of Terri Blackstock's books, it is hard to put it down. I have read all of the Newpointe series more than one time, but each time I read it, I get into it. Thanks for writing such a great book in a great series.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent !.......2004-12-02

This book, and all of Terri Blackstock's book, are hard to put down once you start reading them. This book transformed me into the story and the lives of those involved. My husband was a firefighter so I understand the feelings she put through in this book. I highly recommend "Line of Duty."

5 out of 5 stars Awesome storry.......2004-11-20

This was an awesome story line. I could not but it down and when I did, I couldn't wait to get back to it. I hope that Terri does not stop with this book. This series is so perfectly written and should not be stopped.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but not her best.......2004-11-10

This is another good book from Terri. However, there were a few times I wanted to put it down and not pick it back up. I was disappointed that we followed Dan and Jill again, rather then a new couple or a character who didn't develope much in previous books. I would say that is the biggest problem with this book, everything else is great. I won't go into details, because I see that so many of these reviews have already done a great job with that. The first few chapters were hard to get through, but after the building came down I had to find out what happened to Dan and the rest of the fireman from Newpointe who were lost/trapped in the rubble. Do they make it out alive? Do they ever find them in that mess? It's an exciting book, you should read it.

Book Description

In 2004, Erin Solaro went to Iraq to study American servicewomen — what they were doing, how well they were doing it, how they were faring in combat. In 2005, she went to Afghanistan on the same mission. Having spent time embedded with combat troops and conducting stateside interviews with numerous analysts and veterans, Solaro is convinced that the time to drop all remaining restrictions on women's full equality under arms is now. The Army, the country, the women of America — and of the world — need it.

Women in the Line of Fire details why this will not be an easy task. Although 15 percent of the military is female, the Army and Marines still resist acknowledging what is, in fact, already happening — women are fighting, and fighting well. For the Religious Right and the cultural conservatives, women in combat is a hot-button issue in their campaign to “take back the culture.” But for the young men and women on the lines, brought up in an America where equality between the sexes was never second guessed and where making up the rules as you go along comes with the territory, it's the new reality.

This seems to be an example of the conclusion being written before any research was undertaken.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing at Best.......2007-03-28

In conducting my own sociological research and as a former female Marine, I eagerly sought out this book, hoping for real information about the current status and experiences of women in the U.S. military. What I found, however, was 370 pages of self-serving diary-type brooding, anecdotal "evidence" of rampant sexual predation by military males, and almost NO voices of the military women themselves. This book is disappointing at best. I found myself appalled by many things Ms. Solaro asserted and alternately laughing at other things that were simply preposterous. I suppose this book could be useful to give someone an extremely subjective view of women in the contemporary military; however, readers BEWARE that this is written by a journalist! Although, Ms. Solaro alludes to her credentialed education, I see very little evidence of an acceptable methodology nor support for her extrapolated conclusions. Readers should take this book with a heavy dose of skepticism.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Analysis of Women Soldiers and the Problems They Face.......2007-02-17

Erin Solaro has provided both the data showing the good job women soldiers are doing and a clear explanation the military and political obstacles that make their lives and service so difficult. This is not just a feminist argument that women should have full opportunities for combat service because it's the right thing to do; it's a thorough analysis of why women can do the job. As Solaro points out, full participation of women in the armed forces is the last barrier to equality in our society.
I've believed that women have a full place in the military for years, but Solaro has given me the facts to back up my argument.

5 out of 5 stars Are women really equal citizens?.......2006-12-13

Erin Solaro builds a case that the quality of citizenship is directly related to participation in the responsibilities of citizenship. Female soldiers are proving that to them, real citizenship, what Solaro calls civic virtue, is in participation, not excuses.

Women are, as Solaro points out, serving and dying for their commitment to the United States and human life around the world. The dangers and threats of modern war put women in the line of fire whether they are serving official combat positions or not. Because of outdated administrative and cultural policies and attitudes that the author argues need to be updated, female soldiers are criminally underprepared to serve according to their full potential.

I don't sympathize with all of the author's conclusions or personal subjective impressions, but she has raised very important issues that ought to be part of a more serious and far-reaching public debate on where the US really stands without apology or hedging on the subject of women in combat.

5 out of 5 stars Let's begin the debate.......2006-09-15

This book raises several questions near and dear to my heart as a female servicemember who has been deployed twice, both times to Iraq for 12 months. There are some issues I agree with, and some I do not. Nonmilitary females may be interested in the points Ms. Solaro raises on maternal mortality. I am not convinced on that point, and it was a needless digression before getting into her later points, which I found much more interesting. The section describing her time actually spent embedded in Iraq was enlightening as well. Sometimes, her zeal in showing the practical ability of men and women to integrate without too much drama is slightly idealistic (I assure you, the circumstances of combat where men and women are too tired to engage in sexual activity is rare - sometimes I've even seen activity increased, for whatever reasons may be out there - heightened awareness of mortality, troubles at home, etc.) but still, the debate and update of women's place in the Army, in combat areas, and as citizens is served here by a good foundation of historical and critical analysis. I heartily recommend this book to anyone wishing an informative read on the subject, even if they do not necessarily agree with the subject material.

Book Description

Firefighters have long been among the most admired men and women in our culture, and recent events have shown how well-placed that admiration is—adding fuel to our innate fascination with stories about fire and the people who risk their lives to fight it. Some of our best writers are drawn to the subject of firefighting, and over the years they have created a rich body of literature. Fire Fighters offers the most exciting and compelling stories from that body of work, including accounts of devastating fires from New York to Yellowstone, as well as smaller blazes that have turned particularly ugly or dangerous. Selections include Jimmy Breslin’s eulogy for the men who died in the famous Chelsea fire, Norman McLean on the Great Gulch forest fire that killed nine young smokejumpers, John McPhee on fires in the Pine Barrens, Studs Terkel’s interview with a fire fighter, and riveting accounts of the FDNY’s role in the September 11 tragedy and its aftermath. 16 black-and-white photos are also featured.

2 out of 5 stars Not What the Title Implies.......2003-05-24

I was disappointed in this book. I found the majority of material to be related to 9/11 or to wildland firefighting while the cover implies it covers all ranges of firefighting. The material included is good...it just spends very little time on structural firefighting and the men who do that job. What time it does dedicate to it is mostly in the form of re-hash of previous material; Report from Engine Co 82, Working etc. There are better books out there, unless you are interested in wildland firefighting. If you are, then this is one of the better books on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars One of the series' best!.......2002-07-07

You'll have trouble putting this one down. 21 strong selections look at firefighting from a variety of angles. I read a lot of 'fire books' but the editor found plenty I had not seen. 8 of the 21 stories are stand-alone articles, not excerpts - 2 about 9-11 that will just tear you up. The focus is split about 50/50 between city firefighting and forest firefighting, with a couple essays from folks who don't actually fight fires themselves, but must live with those who do. You'll read about a lot of brave men who never came home from their fires and you can't help but pause at the end of most of the selections. This book is especially relevant in the summer of 2002 with wildfires devouring Arizona and Colorado - what a way to better understand the human aspect of what you see on the news, and even learn something. Willis has chosen powerful, gut-wrenching, tear-jerking stuff from sources you haven't seen and you or your firefighter will stay up to read this one cover to cover.

5 out of 5 stars True inspiration from a true leader.......2005-01-09

Having met Bill Wilson on a few occasions and having listened to his compelling message of hope, vision and sacrifice, I thought I had figured him out. But after reading this book, I now understand in a greater depth why this man does what he does each week. His message should touch the heart of every children's worker across the world. His commitment to his kids, his bus, his ministry shows each of us what the phrase, "...unto the least of these." really means. After reading this book, I cannot imagine anyone who has a vision to see things change around them not feel compelled to get back on track. Our vision is all we have. To make a difference in one child. Each week. One child. We cannot all be "Bill Wilson", but we all can be who God has called us to be. Read this book and get ready to have the fire kindled again.

5 out of 5 stars Great Insight on the fireline.......2001-03-15

Probably one of the best wildland fire books I have ever read. In my 25+ years of firefighting this one captures the scenes of a wildland fire the best. The pictures are great and the narration and stories truly catch you up in the whole fire scene. Buy it for the pictures or the stories--but get a copy, You will enjoy it for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A Firefighter's View..........2000-12-27

When I first picked up a copy of Michael Thoele's Fire Line, I was quite skeptical, having served 5 years in the late 1990's as a Region One Firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service in Montana while working my way through college to earn an engineering degree at Montana State University. All too often, Books, Documentaries, and movies leave much to be desired when it comes to correctly describing the world of Wildland Firefighting and the characters that inhabit that world. After having read the work completely, I must say that I am very impressed. I have read it now more than a few times, and still return to it when I feel the need to keep alive all the wonderful memories of the unique people that I met and the experiences that we shared.

Having started out as an "Engine Slug" on the Gallatin National Forest, and having worked my way up and around the fire eschelons-- serving as a helitack crew member, eventually earning my quals as an Incident Commander, and serving my time as a Rookie Smokejumper in Missoula, I have seen and done much that Mr. Thoele accurately describes. I think what makes the book work so well is that the author lets the book be itself. By this, I mean that many of the stories and photos are those related to and given to the author. The research for this book is absolutly top-notch, [as it MUST be], and takes nothing away from the fast-paced, hard-hitting, gritty and spine-tingling stories related by the author.

In my opinion, this is the finest book currently on the market that documents Wildland Firefighting in the western United States, both in scope and depth. It is a fitting tribute to all Wildland Firefighters, Past, Present and Future.

5 out of 5 stars Now More than Ever.......2000-08-10

It's been several years since Mike Thoele wrote his fine book, but it's still a valuable primer on the people who fight wildland fire. With catastrophic fires burning across the West this summer of 2000, the worst fire season in half a century, it's worth taking another look at Fire Line. When we venture into the woods, especially to build a home or cabin, we should remember who we put at risk. Thoele's book puts faces on firefighters: they could be neighbors or friends; they could be ourselves. Making a dwelling fire-safe is not the most expensive or difficult job in the world, but it gives firefighters like the ones in Thoele's book a better chance of making it home at the end of a 14 day shift, some of those days 24 hour days. Thoele's book is a colorful, readable and pleasant telling of the story of the wildland firefighter.

5 out of 5 stars The very best book available on Western wildfires.......1998-09-21

Mike Thoele is one of the few humans truly qualified to write a book that accurately portrays the culture and the people of wildland fire. And he has done a spectacular job of it with this fine book.

Since the major rager fires of 1910, Americans have fought wildfires in the forests and grasslands and deserts of the West. The summer warriors who take on these battles are a breed apart, and Thoele explains why. He shows us, with an impressive collection of photos, and tells us, with well-crafted stories, who they are and what they do. From tanker pilot Laddie Lash's breath-taking canyon dives, to exhausted firefighters sleeping in a pile in the dirt, to the "generals" plotting strategy in the command center of the war on wildfire, Thoele takes us there.

If you've made a 20-year career of it, or if you know nothing of wildfire and have not even seen a wilderness fire camp, you will learn from this book what it's all about. Thoele portrays the people who are bitten by the fire bug, the men and women who go back, year after year, to do battle with the dragon of fire, both accurately and dramatically. Every bit of this impressive book is right-on and readable, even for those who have but a passing interest in wildfire.

Perhaps the best reviews, though -- or the most credible reviews -- are those of the firefighters themselves, and I have heard from dozens of them what they think of this book. They call it a masterpiece.
