Book Description
No matter how visually appealing or content-packed a Web site may be, if it's not adaptable to a variety of situations and reaching the widest possible audience, it isn't really succeeding. In Bulletproof Web Desing, author and Web designer extraordinaire, Dan Cederholm outlines standards-based strategies for building designs that provide flexibility, readability, and user control--key components of every sucessful site. Each chapter starts out with an example of an unbulletproof site one that employs a traditional HTML-based approach which Dan then deconstructs, pointing out its limitations. He then gives the site a make-over using XHTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), so you can see how to replace bloated code with lean markup and CSS for fast-loading sites that are accessible to all users. Finally, he covers several popular fluid and elastic-width layout techniques and pieces together all of the page components discussed in prior chapters into a single-page template.

Guest Reviewer: Jeffrey Zeldman

Modern web design is user-centered, accessible, and standards-based. In other words, it's completely different from the stuff we did in the 1990s. There are two vital aspects to designing with web standards:

(1) understanding why
(2) knowing how

Know-how is what Dan Cederholm has in spades, and in this updated edition of his essential text, he shares that knowledge with humor and clarity.

Dan's is one of the smartest minds in CSS and HTML. He is internationally known as a deep and innovative coder. But his background is in design and production, working on real-world sites for no-nonsense businesses like Google, ESPN, and Fast Company, Inc.

This grounding in practical user interface design and daily production issues makes Dan a great teacher of CSS, because he never loses sight of the things designers want to do (not to mention the things designers' clients and bosses demand of them).

From multi-column layouts that stay crispy in milk, to maintaining fine control of web fonts and sizes without alienating users: just about every problem a modern web designer faces is examined, with solutions ranging from good to better to best.

This second edition includes everything you need to know about taking Internet Explorer 7 into account. Little else has changed. And that's as it should be, for this book is a classic. It belongs on every web designer's shelf.

-- Jeffrey Zeldman, author, Designing With Web Standards 2nd Edition

Book Description

No matter how visually appealing or packed with content your Web site is, it isn’t succeeding if it’s not reaching the widest possible audience. If you get this guide, you can be assured it will! By deconstructing a series of real-world Web sites, author and Web designer extraordinaire Dan Cederholm outlines 10 strategies for creating standards-based designs that provide flexibility, readability, and user control—key components of every successful Web site. Each chapter starts out with an example of what Dan refers to as an “unbulletproof” concept—an existing site that employs a traditional approach and its associated pitfalls. Dan then deconstructs that approach, noting its downsides and then making the site over using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). By the end of each chapter, you’ll have replaced traditional, bloated, inaccessible page components with lean markup and CSS. The guide culminates with a chapter that pieces together all of the page components discussed in prior chapters into a single page template.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Foundation.......2007-10-20

I found this to provide an excellent foundation for developing web pages using lean HTML and elegant CSS. It was not overly focused on Web Design or Web Development, but comfortably in the middle. The examples were progressive, practical, and timeless. In addition, the final chapter brought it all together nicely to make a full web page from scratch.

This book really is 5 stars! I gave it 4 stars only because I wanted more examples and, as a developer, I would have preferred more code.

Nonetheless, an excellent guide into the next generation of web development. Something I will reference again and wish I had read years ago!

4 out of 5 stars For web standards professionals to improve their skills........2007-09-23

If you're a frontend engineer who's already skilled in web standards (semantic markup, CSS presentation, unobtrusive javascript), this book may help you to the next level. If you're new to that stuff, then I recommend Head First HTML With CSS and XHTML.

5 out of 5 stars Bulletproof - no bull.......2007-09-07

This book is simply essential for the serious web developer who cares about standards and web sites that just work. It is well presented and thorough. The knowledge it imparts is readily extended to new design challenges. Well done!

4 out of 5 stars No brainer. Definite MUST-HAVE........2007-09-06

I hope knocking down to 4 stars doesnt hinder people from buying this book, it is fantastic and should be in every web designer's library. Its concise, filled with well-explained and well-illustrated CSS strategies. The author's writing is one of the best I've ever seen in a technical book. Fun to follow and a great sense of humor, but very clear about what he's teaching.

I knock it down a star for two reasons, one it does focus a bit too much on people with screen readers. I know this sounds awful to say, but before I get crucified let me explain: as a designer my medium is mainly visual. While I do think it is important to keep your audience in mind for general public sites, I think for a design book the visual should be a bigger focus only because as designers we are trying to "wow" clients visually.

The other knock is that it is fairly small for a list price of $39.99 but price is an issue I have with most computer books. I would've maybe also like to see a chapter or two of random Tips & Tricks. Stuff like making text look weather-beaten by putting a GIF of "splotches" over it that I recently saw online. Maybe that's too gimmicky for this book, but you get the idea.

Despite the knocks this is a must-have CSS book and should be a definite purchase for all web designers out there. One of those you will come back to over and over.

4 out of 5 stars Heads up on quality of the book cover.......2007-08-30

Book content is excellent, but be prepared for disappointment with the paperback cover. It is not glossy and unlikely to hold up to regular handling. Plan on covering it with something reinforcing. In fact, the cover on my book also started curling within hours of unpacking it, before I even did more than flip through it.

New Riders is not the only publisher who seems unable to put a good cover on a paperback, but it mystifies me as to why that is, since so many publishers have no trouble with that aspect of book design.

Step-by-step guide reveals best practices for enhancing Web sites with Ajax

Web site designers love the idea of Ajax--of creating Web pages in which information can be updated without refreshing the entire page. But for those who aren't hard-core programmers, enhancing pages using Ajax can be a challenge. Even more of a challenge is making sure those pages work for all users. In Bulletproof Ajax, author Jeremy Keith demonstrates how developers comfortable with CSS and (X)HTML can build Ajax functionality without frameworks, using the ideas of graceful degradation and progressive enhancement to ensure that the pages work for all users. Throughout this step-by-step guide, his emphasis is on best practices with an approach to building Ajax pages called Hijax, which improves flexibility and avoids worst-case scenarios.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Top-notch; succinct; well-written.......2007-10-07

I was skeptical at the book's thinness and the basic review of JavaScript. But when I got into it I realized this book communicated more real information, more clearly, than most tech books I've read (and that's a lot). The book is very well written, with just enough theory to understand, enough code samples to be able to use, and lays out an approach which all Ajax implementers would be wise to follow. It is so good to see a tech author and editors care enough about a book to craft it well.

3 out of 5 stars A beginner's book.......2007-08-20

I admit I was misled by the book's title. Having completed a few AJAX applications I was looking for the icing on the cake (and a lot of hints how to make my applications more robust).

What I've got instead is 90 widely-spaced pages (half of the book) of introduction trying to cover JavaScript, XML, JSON, HTML, DOM and XmlHTTPRequest (and there are good reasons some of these topics get a whole book by themselves) ... obviously not useful for a somewhat experienced developer, and also not really useful for a beginner, who would be better off reading specialized books on each of the topics.

While there are a few interesting techniques described in the second half of the book (as well as potential pitfalls and methods to avoid them), they are simply not warranting the much-promising title; I'll still stick to my copy of Ajax in Action. It's too bad that someone with great ideas like Jeremy Keith (the brains behind Hijax, which is also described in this book) authors such a mis-titled book.

4 out of 5 stars A must have if you are familiar in framework but want to clear your mind.......2007-06-27

i am familiar with prototype and jQuery ajax framework. It really provide me a detail information under the framework, like what it have to consider, the call cycle of the XMLHttpRequest object, the pros and cons of different data type - XML, JSON and so on.

they mentions most Ajax challenges - back button, url changes...and so on. But they provide the solution just by showing the URL! You know, the site can be inaccessible as the time going on! That's make me deduct it 1 star.

If you want to finding a reference book, then it may not be that great for you.But if you want to find a book which clear ajax concept throughly, then here it is!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent but slim.......2007-06-16

The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is for its brevity. I bought this book to give me a basic understanding of Ajax, its components, its usefulness, and its pitfalls, and it certainly did that. Jeremy Keith cuts through the hype surrounding Ajax and shows that it's just another tool you can use. However, the book is stronger on methodology (which is explained in logical, clear language) than on multiple code examples and applications, which I could have used more of for the price.

5 out of 5 stars This is it!.......2007-06-04

This one is a breath of fresh air into the verbosity of the others ajax books. Keith keep the topics clear as they must be. I also found this book a valuable fast-reference for the DOM scripting. If you want a book to quickly understand tha ajax core-technologies, well, this is it!

5 out of 5 stars PRIVACY CRISIS is an exceptional privacy reference tool. A must read for 2007........2007-04-12

PRIVACY CRISIS was written by an author who has proved that through diligence, effort and a working knowledge of the system, one can have privacy in their life.

Grant Hall has opened new doors for those of us who previously believed that the road to financial privacy must be traveled by transferring assets to offshore 'havens' in an attempt to control our assets. In fact, Hall uses business resources that cater to the privacy seeker combined with knowledge of the financial system and negotiating skills to keep bank and brokerage funds hidden from those who may want to find them. Hall recommends using a company that rents safe deposit boxes without identification, tax i.d. or Social Security numbers-not even a name for those who want total secrecy. There's examples of cashing checks that leave no trail to the payee. Hold assets and property in total secrecy. These methods were eye openers for me.

I liken this book to an information enemy to the powers that want to control freedom loving Americans. Those who choose to become invisible to identity thieves, stalkers, private eyes can do it by practicing Hall's principles in PRIVACY CRISIS.

This is the best book on the subject I have read and I highly recommend it to those who desire personal privacy.

5 out of 5 stars PRIVACY CRISIS provides information on banking secrecy in the U.S.A........2007-03-22

I have completed Privacy Crisis and this book answered many questions about privacy and the challenges we face today.

Grant Hall has covered all of the important money privacy issues and it is possible to make your assets and money disappear through the application of the principles outlined in the book. And this can be done in the U.S.A. What a break from the other authors who guide readers toward offshore banks and advise giving control to others.

I appreciate the attention to detail. Obviously, Hall has walked where other privacy writers have never gone. I would highly recommend this book to those who fear their bank accounts will be stolen or seized by government agencies or others. Thorough, complete and worth the money many times over, Privacy Crisis will become a big deal in the arena of Privacy Reference books.

This book may be the greatest investment a person could make to escape the threats of stalkers, identity thieves or others who wish you harm.
Buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Worth a Hundred Times the Price.......2007-03-02

Personal privacy is under siege these days. Mine was first invaded when cyber-crooks drained my checking account in a single day. If you don't take steps to protect yours, it too will go up in smoke. For you, maybe it's when an obsessed former spouse or fan starts stalking you. Or the government--claiming "national security"--begins wiretapping your phone. Maybe it's when your employer snoops on all your emails, a gumshoe rifles through your credit files, or you have to supply your most personal information just to open a checking account or buy a home.

You don't have to give up your God-given privacy. Believe me, this book will tell you everything you'll ever need to know about how to protect it--whether in just one area, or an entirely anonymous lifestyle. This author knows his stuff. He's practiced everything he writes about. So his book is far in advance of other privacy books that just recycle armchair theories or even worse, suggest you do things that are outright illegal.

Protect your identity. Protect the privacy of your home and business transactions--your computer, phone, mail, travel, bank account, stored items, credit files, hard assets, and investments. One invasion of your privacy will cost you ten or a hundred times the price of this one-of-a-kind book.

I wish I'd known about it before they emptied my bank account.

5 out of 5 stars A timely guide to preventing stalking and identity theft.......2007-01-26

During this era of skyrocketing identity theft crimes, violence and death to innocent victims by stalkers, and government's tracking and monitoring of citizens' business, money and communication, Americans are seeking privacy for personal security and survival. Grant Hall writes on how to live an anonymous lifestyle in his new book, Privacy Crisis: Identity Theft Prevention Plan and Guide to Anonymous Living. And he should know. He used a non-traditional 'defense' to avoid a civil court case by disappearing for four years. A number of privacy tactics outlined in Privacy Crisis belong to Hall. I have never seen these in print-and I began reading privacy books prior to the publication of W.G. Hill's first PT book. Privacy Crisis may be the best book of its kind ever written.

According to Hall, privacy living is the answer to preventing identity theft. One can escape from a stalker or disappear-for any reason by using the information in Privacy Crisis. Alternate identification, renting and owning a home in secrecy, driving and working under the radar and establishing a clandestine communication and computer system are covered in detail. This book is thorough and complete and cites case histories and challenges the author of 'How to be Invisible' on the use of nominees.
Hall provides insight on anonymous banking, cashing checks privately, alternate name debit cards and provides a resource for obtaining a safe deposit box requiring no name or Social Security number. There's information on how to keep investments, property and businesses a secret. All of this can be accomplished in the U.S.A. of all places-a welcome change from the many books offering unrealistic, inconvenient, expensive, offshore remedies for domestic privacy problems.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-read for Privacy-conscious Americans!.......2007-01-14

It goes without saying that personal privacy is a rare commodity in America today. Identity theft has become the country's fastest growing crime. Con artists relentlessly target us while greedy lawyers and vengeful ex-spouses threaten to drain our bank accounts and assets. Our personal computers have become open doors into the most discreet corners of our lives. And that doesn't begin to address threats to our privacy from the government, eavesdropping employers, nosey snoops with hidden agendas, eavesdropping employers, and increasingly intrusive marketing-crazed companies.

Privacy Crisis is easily one of the best books on privacy ever written. Through his eye-opening inside perspective, as someone who evaded private investigators and attorneys for four years by living "below the radar," Grant Hall has brought us an authoritative how-to guide for the average American who wants to protect his or her privacy on an practical level. Far superior to the many theory-laden books on privacy, Privacy Crisis is a revealing step-by-step manual written by someone who has walked the walk. This book is required reading for anyone concerned about their personal and financial privacy in an ever-threatening society.

2 out of 5 stars Good Information, Terrible Writing Style.......2004-01-16

The content of this book is good and anyone from a beginner to experienced UNIX user will learn something from reading this book. However, I can't recommend it because the author writes this book as if he is speaking to 3rd graders. The author's tone seems to assume all readers of the book are clueless and need tiresome explanations about obvious points. The book is also filled with un-funny side commentary that is intended (I guess) to make the technical material more readable-but it fails miserably.

An example of how the author goes wrong is in chapter 11, where the UNIX "grep" command is covered. The author continually refers to the "grep" command as "she." I suppose he thinks that personifying a UNIX command will somehow make the material more enjoyable to his "3rd grade readers." He couldn't be more wrong! I find this style so annoying I want rip the pages from the book and send them mercilessly through a shredder!

So, unless you like to read technical books with the words "dummy" or "idiot" in the title, I would stay away from this one. There is no shortage of excellent UNIX books out there, so there is no reason to waste time with this one.

1 out of 5 stars Won't recommend this book.......2003-02-14

This book talks too much details about the history of UNIX.As a student,I just want to be familiar with the commands of UNIX.Another ridiculous thing is that there is no way for students or users to get the solution of exercise at the end of each chapter. No answer solution attached in this BIG BOOK,only the instructor is allowed to buy it.
I really can't benefit from this book.

4 out of 5 stars good book for beginners.......2003-01-20

Really a good book for the students who are in the beginning stage of UNIX.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry, ZERO stars........2002-10-21

Unfortunately, this book is just a basic intro to Unix.
Take a careful look at the TOC. Look at it before you buy.
Heed this warning that you will get almost no value from it.

'Lie' leads to court ruling
By Robert Patrick
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
04/25/2007

A man jailed and fined a decade ago for scamming customers with a St. Louis based "get rich" program is in trouble again after a federal judge ruled that he violated a court order by lying to customers.

The man, Richard C. Neiswonger, and William S. Reed are partners in Asset Protection Group Inc., which took in $19.8 million from 2000 to 2006 by signing up almost 2,000 customers, court documents and testimony show. Asset Protection Group has an office in Las Vegas, but the earlier sales program had been based in St. Louis.

The customers were promised the chance to earn six-figure incomes selling Nevada and offshore corporations that supposedly shield buyers' assets from the IRS, law enforcement and "capricious federal judges."

Despite paying up to $9,800 apiece to peddle the program, the customers, known as consultants, got little in return, U.S. District Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh wrote in an order made public Tuesday. Advertisement

Only three sold more than 50 corporations. Most sold none and lost money.

Only one of the consultants ever made the promised six-figure income, and that was only because APG supplied her with "numerous names of prospective clients prepared to buy corporations," Limbaugh wrote.

Of the 3,200 Nevada corporations set up through APG, half are defunct, meaning sellers would not get the promised fees for renewals.

Neiswonger used at least $2.8 million of the proceeds to pay personal expenses, including payments for a Mercedes and a Lexus and credit card expenses, Limbaugh wrote, and Reed received about $5 million in cash and other payments.

In 1997, Neiswonger was ordered not to lie in the advertising or sale of "business-opportunity" programs and agreed to other marketing restrictions after a similar business took in $6 million from 612 people using similar methods, prosecutors said at the time. He also pleaded guilty of wire fraud and money laundering, served 12 months in prison and paid millions in fines and restitution.

Both men knew about the civil and criminal case and the court order that barred Neiswonger from lying to customers and requiring him to maintain a bond to protect customers.

Neither told customers about Neiswonger's troubles, or that Reed had lost his law license in Colorado, Limbaugh wrote.

Limbaugh found Neiswonger in civil contempt for his conduct at APG. Also, he is banned from telemarketing and selling any "program," which documents define as any training sessions, instruction, class material or joint-venture opportunity.

The Federal Trade Commission wants Reed and Neiswonger to return the profit they made through APG, but the profit has yet to be determined.

Also, Reed and APG face a hearing over whether they should be held in contempt.

Justice Department lawyers became involved in the case earlier this month and have filed legal papers alleging that some of the services APG provided were improper and that at least 69 APG customers may have $30 million in federal tax liabilities on assets they ran through the APG system.

"There's a lot in this case that we don't dispute," said Neiswonger's lawyer, Robert McAllister, but he noted, "Nobody sought refunds that hasn't got them."

He also said Neiswonger had nothing to do with the IRS action involving the accounts.

Neiswonger, reached by telephone where he works at a business in St. Louis County offering treatment for men's sexual problems, said that an appeal of Limbaugh's order was planned. "We just don't think that it was a fair ruling," he said.

Reed's lawyer declined to comment.

4 out of 5 stars A great eye opener.......2006-01-31

I found this book to be have great guidelines and useful
information in taking steps to protect the assets.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting background info only.......2005-08-02

A nice introduction to extreme asset protection techniques as a sales pitch to the reader to employ the author's services. Nothing wrong with that, and I enjoyed reading the book, though it is full of off-topic information including a grossly incorrect statement about the economic base of Singapore. The author does a great job of citing rare cases where the US government bullies people and takes their money; interesting, but for most of us I would guess not exactly helpful in our situation. I am still looking for a good practical guide that explains how to do things without the employment of a lawyer.

5 out of 5 stars no1coolcat's assertion incorrect on Reed's background.......2004-09-22

no1coolcat's review about a suspension is blatently false, obviously he is a competitor in the asset protection field trying to smear this author. Many attorneys are very familiar with Mr. Reed's story and background. It is an open book that he actually uses as a selling point. He is a hero for asset protection, having learned it the business first hand when he defended himself and others during the real estate market collapse in Colorado in the 80s. He was so successful at defending their assets that the frustrated attorneys on the other side after many years unsuccessfully attacking them, filed a grievance with the Colorado Bar Association claiming Mr. Reed had been dishonest because he hadn't paid them a dime! It was dirty tactics, a last resort, and all they could think to do to try to pressure him. That was many years later and by that time, Mr. Reed was living and practicing in another state. He voluntarily agreed to have his CO license suspended for one year at which time it would be reinstated. Since he did not plan to live in Colorado again, he did not reinstate it, it did not matter to him. Mr. Reed has provided asset protection to thousands of clients for over 10 years now, and is endorsed by many including Larry King Live, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Robert Wagner and many others as the top authority in the U.S. on asset protection. His strategies work 100%. His company has top references, top ratings from Dun&Bradstreet and Forbes, and is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best book for VB6.......2003-11-21

I bought this book in Year 11 (2000), after reading reviews of it. I was a beginner to programming - not only did this book introduce me to programming, it goes into VB6 in detail. The examples are all useful - not just toy examples. I have created many useful VB6 projects - this is the ONLY VB6 book you need.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of information, serious lack of explanation and samples.......2003-10-19

Perhaps this book would prove useful to an experienced programmer, but for a novice it is not a good choice. Cornell "assumes no previous programming experience", then goes on to write in huge, sweeping generalities without adequate explanations. Also, the code in the book is often written so the reader cannot fathom the type of event the code is associated with, and no explanations are forthcoming in the body of the text.
There really is a lot covered in this book, but unless you do indeed have "previous programming experience", not worth the cash.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed so far........2003-10-17

Two cents from a rank amateur/beginning programmer. At the moment, I'm on page 179 of this book and the main problem I have so far is with the way the information is communicated. Personally, I now know that I should have picked up a book that taught VB concepts via small projects and tasks. A "in chapter 1 we'll build a simple tool to get familiar w/ the IDE. In chapter 2 we'll improve our skillset by building a slightly advanced tool to learn about declaring variables, etc." approach would work better for me. Unfortunately, this book doesn't really do that. The concepts here are explained mostly with bits of standalone code. Hopefully, perhaps by page 200, we'll commence with some "learning by doing." Yes, hopefully. In the meantime, I'll grit my teeth and continue with the book, but right now it simply isn't working for me.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2003-04-29

I should like to point out that the comment above regarding typos is not correct. True the example is missing a parenthesis (which the reviewer misspelled), however the move method DOES NOT require 4 arguments when anyone of the optional 3 are there. The arguments are left, top, width and height. You must specify all arguments that appear in the syntax before the argument you want to specify. For example, you can't specify width without specifying left and top. Any trailing arguments that are unspecified remain unchanged.

3 out of 5 stars not bad with typos.......2003-03-10

This isn't a bad beginners book. Anyone who needs more 'basic' information than this book probably shouldn't be in the IT industry in the first place.

The book has alot of typos, i.e. missing parantheses in code examples, missing function arguments etc. I've found it to be somewhat troublesome, but you should be able to go to msdn online to figure out the typo. For example on page 487 the move method requires 4 arguments when anyone of the optional 3 are there but he only includes 2. There is also a missing parantheses there as well.

This book does not go into ADO in any kind of depth that is needed. The Murach book, 'VB6 beginner to database pro' does ADO much better. There does seem to be a complete lack of ADO books for VB6. I imagine there are alot for VB.net. If you want this book, you will need another book to learn ADO programming in VB6. Database manipulation is what many people use VB for. However this lack of ADO depth may be because the book went to press before MS finalized ADO (just a guess there).

Don't get me wrong, I thought this book was very informative and helpful, the fact that ADO is not covered in depth is a definite drawback. Also the code examples don't include every example from the book, just the complete programs. There were many code snippets that you could put in blank vb6 project to illustrate something that were not in the downloadable code from osborne. I would have preferred a CD to downloading as well.

8/20/2003 - I hadn't realized this before becuse the book does not cover it at all, but there is a complete lack of coverage of interface classes. I had to go to a new riders book MCSD TRAINING GUIDE: VISUAL BASIC 6 EXAMS for a good discussion of this. Even the mspress book is somewhat confusing on this topic. If you can get this book used than do that. Don't pay full price though, especially since the binding seems to come apart after alot of use.

Book Description

Would you like to have the confidence, the kind of driving purpose, that shuts out all fear? Do you want your life to be filled with adventure? There are many kinds of soldiers, and the ones that this book is written for don’t necessarily wear a uniform. The missions these soldiers undertake have more than just political or historical significance—they are impacting eternity. Bulletproof is a field manual for the Christian soldier. It addresses the issues of fear and risk from a Christian perspective, using primarily military examples and analogies. Holton teaches believers how to overcome fear and join the ranks of the army of God.

Terrorism. Murder. Disease. Job Loss. Road Rage. Weapons of Mass Destruction. Environmental Disaster.

[Headline]:

What? Are You Scared?

[Body copy]:

By every sense of reason, you should be. By faith, you don’t have to be.

God’s soldiers are issued body armor: Peace that surpasses understanding. But you must choose to put it on. Chuck Holton reveals how to claim this peace of mind and rest in the sovereignty of God’s plan while stationed in our dangerous world.

Not denying legitimate causes for fear, Holton’s balanced perspective to living boldly as a Christian today offers refreshing hope in the midst of rampant anxiety. Because when you begin seeing things from the Commander’s perspective, you won’t have to dodge bullets.

Until your mission is complete, you are bulletproof.

Story Behind the Book

“In October 2002, a sniper started killing people at random in the area where I live. The community almost ground to a standstill, with people refusing to leave their homes, drive the streets, or send their children to school until the killer was found. What disturbed me most was the reaction of many of my fellow Christians—one of fear just like their unsaved neighbors. I felt we were passing up a perfect opportunity to model the peace that passes all understanding to a very needy audience. “Since then I have come to realize that the Bible, almost in its entirety, tells us over and over again that we should not be afraid. A life lived trusting God is a fearless, confident life that will draw others to it.”

2 out of 5 stars Unreadable if you're not Christian.......2006-08-22

For better or for worse, this book is not your standard personal growth tome. It is by a Christian, for Christians (only), and your enjoyment of it will vary accordingly.

Almost everything in this book premised on belief in Christ -- both in how Holton approaches fear and how he advises others to do so -- and if you don't accept Jesus as your savior, his advice and insights are completely useless.

If you're Christian (I'm not), you might find this aspect of it to be a net positive.

5 out of 5 stars Bulletproof.......2006-06-27

This last reviewer is apprantly numb to most things that tell it like it is. This book is an excellent tool for showing you the roots of fear and why you shouldn't fear. Chuck Holten tells it like it is, he tells what needs to be said.

This book will open your eyes to things in your life and give you some major insight into how Jesus views our lives.

1 out of 5 stars It made me feel numb. kinda like a bulletproof vest........2006-02-18

I didn't like it...
but then, I don't like Chuck Holton. (:

5 out of 5 stars I'm not scared!.......2005-06-20

I was never one to focus on fear or worry, in fact I was always confident that God was always taking care of me in His own way. Chuck's book really shined new light on how not to fear ANYTHING and trust in God, and only God.

As a father of two small boys, concern for broken limbs (or worse) is always haunting! Chuck's book made me realize that God saved me from myself when I was small, so why should I fear that He won't take care of my boys...according to His plans?

This is not only a great read for anyone dealing with fear, but all fathers (especially of boys) need to read this one. Thanks, Chuck.

5 out of 5 stars Living without fear.......2005-05-21

For years fear has tormented me. There are many experiences in my life that have contributed to this, but after becoming a Christian I wanted to totally free myself from this mindset. Chuck Holton's Book, Bulletproof, has greatly helped me to realize that we are able to live a fearless life under Divine protection, and guidance. I was especially touched by his chapter dealing with "bulletproof" children. He helped me understand about parental peace of mind, while also embracing responsible parenting. This book is a blessing to anyone struggling with fear issues. After finishing this book I have a renewed confidence, and for the first time in a long time am excited about living fear-free. Thank you, Mr. Holton.

5 out of 5 stars For every 100 book proposals submitted to publishers by hopeful authors, two will make it and the other ninety-eight will not........2007-05-12

For every 100 book proposals submitted to publishers by hopeful authors, two will make it and the other ninety-eight will not. That's why literary agent Pam Brodowsky and successful author Eric Neuhaus teamed-up to create a 'how to' manual of instruction and advice to help aspiring writers seeking to break into print better the odds against them. The first part of "Bulletproof Book Proposals" addresses the book proposal writing process through clear instructions and exercises, along with a ten-step approach designed to teach the author how to craft an overview of their writing project that is clear, concise, and engaging; conduct a thorough competitive-book analysis; define primary and secondary markets, and write effective chapter outlines and summaries. The second part of "Bulletproof Book Proposals" presents twelve real-life book proposals that were successful in getting published. Also featured are informative commentaries from the authors and agents of those proposals, as well as the editors who accepted them for publication. "Bulletproof Book Proposals" is a complete, 'user friendly', and strongly recommended do-it-yourself seminar workshop in the creation of effective, successful, profitable book proposals - a skill that is a fundamental necessity for anyone seeking to create a professional writing career for themselves. Also very highly recommended from Writer's Digest Press are two other references for aspiring authors: "The Glimmer Trains Guide To Writing Fiction" and Bill Brohaugh's "Unfortunate English: The Gloomy Truth Behind The Words You Use".

5 out of 5 stars Packed With Publishing Insight from Various Viewpoints.......2007-01-15

Over the years, I've written dozens of book proposals. For the last five, years, I've been a book acquisitions editor and reviewed hundreds of book proposals. You may wonder why I'd need to read this book. I did. There is always something new to learn and there is not ONE way to create a book proposal.

Literary Agent Pam Brodowsky and Eric Neuhaus have created a well-crafted ten step plan for proposal creation. In each section, they have included the particular portion of their proposal for BULLETPROOF BOOK PROPOSALS. The reader goes from defining the idea to packaging the proposal.

For the second section of the book, they include a dozen sample nonfiction book proposals on different topics, with different publisherss (some of them the same publisher) and different literary agents (some proposals don't have an agent and a number of them were from Pam Brodowsky--where she would have had the greatest access to this material). Each proposal includes insightful comments about why it is shaped in a particular way.

The overall result of BULLETPROOF BOOK PROPOSALS is to provide the reader with more insight into this crucial process to selling a nonfiction book. I recommend this title.

I've read this book about 15 times, getting something new each time, and have used these theories of blulletproofing diversification against inflation and depression on my own portfolio for the last 12 years. His rationales and solutions are clearly explained, and based on his risk guidelines, I've chosen my own allocations to be 5% 30-year US Treasury Zeroes, 20% all other Bond Funds, 30% Large US Stock Funds, 7% Small US Stock Funds, 13% International Stock Funds, and 25% Real Estate REIT Funds. I only buy or sell to keep these proportions the same.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst Case Of Self Promotion I have Ever Seen.......2002-10-24

I bought this book hoping to get some real information on financial planning. It turns out that this book is a collection of "lip service" ideas on financial topics. The authors agenda is very clear: To sell and promote Insurance companies and Insurance Products by name in the book. This really amounts to nothing more than a pushy life insurance salesman in a book.
