A MOUSE TALE ON TWO CONTINENTS.......2007-06-26
Lawson's 1939 spoof of the life of Benjamin Franklin in his elder years proves delightful literary fluff and a quick read for kids of all ages. It may even serve as a spring board to true history in middle school. This easy introduction to the Colonial era will entertain elementary schoolchildren with its mouse's eye view of Philadelphia and of France. Having decided to make his way in the world, though not too far from his extensive family who reside in penury in a church Vestry, Amos moves in with an inquisitive and enterprising older gent named Ben Franklin. Despite the vast difference in size--and seeming incompatibility of species--these two great minds are able to converse with ease.
The clever houseguest credits himself with much (unrecognized)
inspiration for the author of POOR RICHARD'S ALMANC. Amos shares his more opinions and suggestions on a variety of topics: the printing press, the portable stove, lightning, electricity--in fact he actually helps Ben prove that they are one and the same phenomenon. (Apparently spectacles were invented Before Amos moved in.) The only time their staunch friendship is seriously threatened is when Ben betrays mouse trust and his own word by using the little fellow in a dangerous meteorological experiment.
This humorous version of Ben's later years culminates in a mock preview of the French revolution (on a mouse scale, of course). The unfortunate result? the American diplomat was banned from the palace of Versailles, but what matter, so long as Sophia's family was rescued and reunited. It is truly amazing how mouse lives parallel human endeavor... By the time of Ben's 81st birthday Amos--ever the bachelor--is content to relax and enjoy the antics of the younger generation. He figures that Ben is old enough to manage his affairs pretty much on his own. The moral seems to be: When a man is not smart enough to assume the credit, a Mouse may boldly step in!
Book Report - Ben and Me.......2007-04-29
I read the book Ben and Me. This book is interesting. In the story, a lonely, rude, gray mouse named Amos finds Benjamin Franklin's house and sleeps in it. Amos becomes Benjamin's only pet and together they make their own, hot, big Franklin Stove. One cold, stormy, night Benjamin puts Amos on his big kite so Amos keeps getting shocked by lighting. Then, Amos and Benjaman go on a huge, wooden, brown ship to Paris and they become famous. A nice, pretty, girl rat named Sophia tells Amos that there are children stuck under the queen's throne. Amos calls all of the other mice in Paris to go save the children and together they do. I learned some interesting facts. I learned that Benjamin Franklin invented something called the Franklin Stove. I also learned that Benjamin Franklin had a gray mouse named Amos. Then, I learned that Benjamin loved inventing new machines. I would recommend this book for three reasons. First, I would recommend this book because it is well written with plenty of the adjectives. Second, I would recommend this book because it tells you a lot of information about Benjamin Franklin and his mouse Amos. Finally, I would recommend this book because it tells you what Benjamin Franklin liked to do when he was alive. Ben and Me is a great book to read.
Ben and Me.......2007-04-15
ISBN 0440420385 (which now belongs to another book) - Really well-done, tongue in cheek "biography" of Benjamin Franklin, a man who is "undeniably stupid at times", according to Amos, the mouse, whose brilliant ideas seem to be all that stand between Franklin and certain death with his crazy experiments.
Amos, oldest of 26 children, comes from a family of church mice. Knowing how hard it is to feed such a brood, Amos sets out to try to find some way to help his family and stumbles into the home of Ben Franklin. Ben is sneezing away in a room thick with smoke from the fireplace until Amos gives him almost every detail Ben needs to create the famous Franklin Stove. Thrilled to have such a great mind at hand, Franklin works out an agreement with Amos and the two go on living and working together. When the Revolutionary War takes a financial toll on Washington's army, the two go to France to borrow from the French and Amos is able, with a great deal of help, to save one beautiful female mouse named Sophia and her seven children. After this final adventure, Amos is ready to settle down to a quiet life in his old age and thinks Ben should, too.
The back cover says the book is for ages 8-12. I think it might be a little tough for 8 year olds, with a large number of big words, but it's amusing enough that an 8 year old might make the effort to learn the words and expand their vocabulary. For the parents who worry about every little word in every book their kid reads, there's a couple disparaging "stupids" and one sentence that has Ben Franklin "tossing off" a shot of brandy. For those who just want their kid to enjoy a book and learn new words, this one's WELL worth it.
By Mr. Dude Man.......2007-03-23
There are many boring, dull biographies on Benjamin Franklin. Then there is Ben and Me written by Robert Lawson, which is not the case. It is a Mr. Lawson calls it "A new and astonishing life on Benjamin Franklin as written by his good mouse AMOS."
It starts out in Philadelphia, where Amos, the oldest mouse of a huge family, leaves home in search of food and shelter. Bitterly cold, he stumbles upon Ben Franklin's house, goes inside and spots Ben Franklin's fur cap to warm up in. Ben notices him, but instead of shooting him, he enjoys Amos' company. After being together a little while Amos has already come up with a successful idea for an experiment for Ben, which was later named the "Franklin Stove".
Ben now thinks that this little mouse would be a great (talking) animal to have around the house for as an assistant. Next thing you know they are making an agreement where Ben will provide just what he was looking for ¬¬ food for him and food delivery for his family, plus the old warm fur hat to hang out in. And all the mouse has to do is hanging out and make comments, or as Ben calls it to "give advice."
It sounds like an ideal plan for Amos until two things happen. Ben takes up electrical experiments and Amos becomes the testing guinea pig. On one occasion Ben attempts to find out if lighting is electric. Amos was then strapped to a kite in the middle of a thunderstorm. He was up there for about a half hour to find out. His answer was `yes'.
It was a great book where Amos, the little mouse follows Ben through his life. I would recommend this book to anyone 6-10 years old.
Cornwall,NY sixth Grader.......2007-03-08
I am a sixth grader. The book I read was "Ben and Me".I find this book very interesting for the fact that such a well known inventor got ideas from a mouse. The mouses name was Amos. This is one of those books that if you read the first chapter, your going to want to read more.
This books is about Ben Fraklin and his best friend whom was a mouse named Amos.Amos lived in a broken down old christ church with twenty-six other kids in his family. This story takes place in the city of philadelphia. One day amos decided he had enough of his life.So he went out into the world and happend to go in Ben Franklins house.Amos and Ben become very good friends and bond alot because they only had each other.
This book tells a classic story. You should read it some time.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book with excellent information!.......2003-05-11
After reading so many guinea pig care books with often inaccurate to down-right dangerous information, this book was a delightful surprise!! Wonderful and truthful information about environment and care!
I would have given it 5-stars but had to take one off for emphasizing the need for guinea pig companionship with their own kind and then *not* adequately dealing with prevention of the breeding. (The author, a behavioral biologist, believes in the animal's innate right to breed. Unfortunately, there are so many unwanted pets needing homes, it seems irresponsible not to address other possible solutions such as same-sex pairing.)
Overall, though, this book ranks as one of the best that I've seen and any guinea pig lucky enough to have an owner that follows the guidelines in this book will be very happy and very spoilt indeed!
Good, reliable information.......2002-02-20
This book is pretty good at providing quality information. However, this book offers few tips about grooming, specific breeds, and safety information (ex: what they can't eat) This book has many good tips and great pictures. It also covers how to get acquainted with your guinea pig, which I have not seen in many other books. Overall, I would reccomend it highly.
Well Organized Guinea Pig Care Book.......2001-08-18
This is a well organized book on guinea pigs for both the novice young owner and a more experienced owner. The graphic designs and page layouts are especially well done. "Tips From the Vet" are highlighted effectively for the reader and there is a sprinkling of humor throughout. Almost all phases of guinea pig care are covered in a practical manner for both adults and younger cavy owners. I recommend it highly.

A great book for reviewing hamster care :).......2005-02-07
This book is fantastic for reviewing hamster care!! The book is entertaining because it has games, activites, and toy checklists icluded in the book for the owner to check off. There are also many adorable pictures hamsters. I have been taking care of hamsters for seven years now, and this book is still helpful. It's great for kids and adults, and hamster experts too!
For the little hamster lover.......2002-11-28
This is a nice book for the child hamster owner, perhaps for reading even before the pet is purchased. It does not contain all the details that a hamster owner might need, but it covers basic behavior and how to treat the pet. Cute photos, too!

Sweet Story!.......2001-03-06
Wake Me Up In Spring is a wonderful little book to read with a young child. The interaction between two friends, a mouse and a bear, conveys the sadness of being separated from a good friend and the joy of reuniting in a very simple and sweet way. You'll walk away from this one happy.

Book Description
In 1946, Elizabeth Taylor -- then fourteen and a major star at MGM -- published a book about her pet chipmunk, Nibbles. With wit, charm, and remarkable skill, she related the adventures and mishaps of her high-spirited friend. She and Nibbles were virtually inseparable during the shooting of National Velvet and other films; in fact the chipmunk almost got to appear in Courage of Lassie -- but he was so well behaved that he didn't look real, and his scene was cut! Recounted here are such stories as the happiest birthday of her life, when she was given King Charles, the horse who was called The Pi in National Velvet, because only Elizabeth could ride him.
Long out of print, this enchanting memoir is available once again with Miss Taylor's original illustrations (including previously unpublished drawings from her private collection), photos of Elizabeth Taylor and Nibbles on and off the set, and a new introduction by the legendary actress. Children will love the story of a girl and her pet; older readers will appreciate the insight into young Elizabeth Taylor's life that this book provides.

The Product of a Strange but Brilliant Mind.......2007-08-17
What makes William Steig tick?
Reading this book one can only wonder at the inner workings of a sublime and zany mind. Is he mad? At times he seems to barely skirt the edge of lunacy - an imagination such as this is anything but normal.
Do you want your kids to read this?
Absolutely - just make sure they buckle their seatbelts first.
Here's how it starts...
"Doctor Bernard De Soto was such a one-in-a-million, humdinger of a dentist that the whole world knew about him, and also about his wife, Deborah, who helped him work his wonders".
De Soto, it should be noted is a very refined and professional looking mouse. But why in the world is his wife's name Deborah?
Steig continues, "The two of them were listening to Caruso one evening when this cablegram arrived"...
Of all the things the DeSotos might be listening to, why Caruso? The author surely has a reason as each such unexpected choice contributes to the bent and altered state of reality.
The cablegram contains an offer of ten thousand gold walulus as an incentive for Dr. D. and his wife D. to travel to Dabwan West Africa to deal with the giant toothache of a seriously suffering elephant. And so the action gets underway.
Along the way things take a dark and scary twist. "Around midnight, while his wife slept, Dr. Bernard De Soto was kidnapped. A hand covered his mouth, and he was hustled off in the clutches of a certain rhesus monkey, Honkitonk by name."
Why in the middle of the book is the by now well known protagonist referred to as "Doctor Bernard De Soto"? By now you get the idea...
In the end, however, all is well. The successful dental intervention liberates the pachyderm from pain and he and his wife dance a "frolicsome fandango".
Just amazing.
Too Scary for Words.......2006-03-22
Though this book is very nicly written, the illustrations are freaky!!!!!
The monkey made my whole family scream in terror! I would not recommend this book for children under 7 years of age .
Doctor DeSoto, well-traveled mouse dentist!.......2002-07-18
William Steig's inimitable mouse creation, Doctor DeSoto, goes on a wonderful adventure in this wonderful book. Along with his able assistant and wife, Deborah, he travels via ocean liner to Africa to see about fixing the tooth of an ailing elephant. While there, the DeSotos get into all sorts of difficulties, all of which are vividly, colorfully illustrated by Steig.
Steig has a wonderful way with artwork, as those who love him already know, but he has an equally uncanny knack with narrative. Eschewing simple phrases and tiny words, he throws around plot and dialogue with great vim and vigor and his enthusiasm and childlike view of this mouse couple are infectious. Highly recommended!
My kids love this book!.......2002-05-22
My children, ages 4 & 5, borrowed this book from our library, and immediately were entranced, asking me to read it over and over again.
Enjoyable book........2002-01-03
I enjoyed this book in general but worried about the depiction of the Indian monkey with no morals. Was he supposed to model the stereotype many African peoples have of Indian immigrants to Africa? In several countries, Indians were blamed for a country's problems and driven out. Is William Steig predjudiced against Indians?

Lords of the Fly: Drosophila Genetics and the Experimental Life
ASIN: 0691016364 |
Book Description
Making Mice blends scientific biography, institutional history, and cultural history to show how genetically standardized mice came to play a central role in contemporary American biomedical research.
Karen Rader introduces us to mouse "fanciers" who bred mice for different characteristics, to scientific entrepreneurs like geneticist C. C. Little, and to the emerging structures of modern biomedical research centered around the National Institutes of Health. Throughout Making Mice, Rader explains how the story of mouse research illuminates our understanding of key issues in the history of science such as the role of model organisms in furthering scientific thought. Ultimately, genetically standardized mice became icons of standardization in biomedicine by successfully negotiating the tension between the natural and the man-made in experimental practice.
This book will become a landmark work for its understanding of the cultural and institutional origins of modern biomedical research. It will appeal not only to historians of science but also to biologists and medical researchers.

The story of the defined laboratory mouse.......2005-07-19
This book describes in vivid detail the development of defined laboratory mice, centered at the Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, Maine. As a user of defined mouse strains for nearly forty years I have enjoyed reading the book and have recommended it to younger colleagues. In my teaching I have often stressed the importance of knowledge of the background on which we are working in (experimental) biomedicine. Karen Rader's book is a rich source to the recent history of medicine.
Book Description
To thrive, these friendly little animals require companionship with other gerbils, which means that owners should keep more than one. Gerbils also enjoy being gently held by their owners. Books in this series are written especially for inexperienced pet owners, for parents whose kids would like to have a pet, and for kids who simply want to learn more about animals that make good pets. Boys and girls are also introduced to the golden rules of pet care, and are advised on how to create affection and trust between themselves and their pets. Several gatefold pages in each book open wide to display attractive photo essays on animals and their care. Every book in this series contains approximately 80 full-color, high-quality photos, as well as instructive drawings.

Very thorough.......2006-03-22
We are getting two gerbils for our 5 year old son and I have read nearly everything I can get my hands on. This book contains the lots of information while not being too wordy. I was able to read much of it to my son.
If you're only going to buy one book on gerbils this should be it.
GREAT read.......2004-03-08

My students loved this book!.......2000-09-06
I teach second grade and my students just loved reading about Harry and his adventures. They were sad when he got in the wrong taxi but laughed and laughed as he made his way around Chattanooga. They loved the ending! My own daughter loves the book and thinks it's really funny! She likes the repetitious nature of Harry's search for the Chattanooga Choo Choo and is anxious to visit Rock City. I would recommend this book whether you've been to Chattanooga or not, though it probably will make you want to visit it!

Recently, while shopping in Chattanooga, I ran across a new book tilted Pardon Me Is That The Chattanooga Choo Choo? After opening the book expecting a typical Children's tale, I was delighted to find out I was wrong. While Harry the Hopping Mouse is lost in Chattanooga the reader finds himself lost in the City's Fascinating history. Chattanooga is one of the most interesting places I have visited, and this book highlights nearly twenty of it's many attractions for tourist's and the city's locals. In addition to a fabulous history lesson, Ellen Eady entertains the reader with the most precious story of a hopping mouse in search for his family. This book will make a wonderful gift for any child. Harry's story is a great book for a family or a teacher. I can only hope the Author will go on to write more books about Harry and his explorations.

My Favorite book!.......2000-08-23
I think that this is the VERY best book for kids I have ever read although,(she is my Aunt so I would get in trouble for saying that I didn't like the book) but I still LOVE IT! I was reading all of the rough drafts all through the process of her book and even at the beginning I knew so many people would love it.She describes all of the sites very well and I know this because I have been to visit her up in Chattanooga 3 times and have been to all but 2 sites. I can see why Harry loved playing in the fountains because those are a lot of fun! mY OVERALL OPINION OF THIS BOOK IS THAT IT IS A 5 star, 2 thumbs up book and that this is an ideal book for kids to read if they are going to Chattanooga and I can not wait to go see my Favorite Aunt again up in Chattanooga, Tennessee. (By the way, did I mention that I, Meghan Taylor, is Ellen Eady, my favorite aunt's, favorite niece!)
