5 out of 5 stars This one's different.......2007-09-05

This is not your regular diet book, full of lots of great information and very easy to understand

5 out of 5 stars What a smart man!.......2007-09-04

I see the other reviews and I say the same thing. If you get the kit, and listen to the tapes. You will lose weight. I was 365 and lost 60lbs in less then 3 months. I have a lot more to lose. But if your so heavy you can't do work outs. Even when you try to walk - You leg starts to swell. And your doctor agrees- you need to lose some weight before you can do anything. Because you could have a heart attack. This is the diet. You eat real food. But you must eat. A heavy person is not heavy because of eating to much. Its the right foods and to eat. Don't skip meals. As for the blue print. When you see your doctor. He can tell you were your problem spots are growing. So you can get the right diet. Michael has done so much for my life. I don't have to cry every night because my legs or my sugar is threw the ceiling. I am feeling like a person now. If you need to lose weight now. Read it, do it. Do it for your self.

5 out of 5 stars yes it does work.......2007-08-29

the book is a good place to start, but get the whole kit, no not every one lose 30lb in 6week (up to 30) but the more you have to lose that more you will lose. I reg person who got this kit and have been on this program for 12 weeks not and I have loss so far 56lb, but you have to be truly willing to change your bad habits. If you eat the way you should you not hungry cause you fill up on vegs, and with drinking all the water you stay full. The real secret to the plan is the mind set

2 out of 5 stars Confused ?.......2007-08-24

I originally purchased this book as my daughter wanted to buy the 6 week makeover package for $300.00. I thought that if the 6 day makeover worked, then we would continue with the 6 week package. On purchasing the book, we had to decided our body types - totally confusing !!!! Neither my daughter nor myself could decide what body types we were - the one I chose was to eat meat 4 times a day - I am almost a vegetarian !!!
I am glad that I purchased the book, but found that the body typing was not consistent- too many choices, that lead to different diets.

5 out of 5 stars It really works!.......2007-08-23

I read some bad reviews on here about it not being enuf food. Apparently, these people did not do it or else they'd be singing the praises like the rest of those who actually did it!

I am very overweight. When I started the 6 Day...I weighed in at 265lbs. 6 days later I weighed in at 256lbs.

My top weight was 283lbs almost 3 months ago. I worked out...walked the park and treadmill like a mad woman to lose only 4lbs in the first month. The second month I tried Alli...which allowed an additional 13lbs but pills are not something I can live with forever. Then I tried this. Amazingly, I was very satisfied for 97% of the 6 days. A few times I woke in the middle of the night with some growling...really, and I just had a little fruit or portion of meat and at the end...I still lost 9 whole pounds.

Of course, any diet can work but this one teaches you to eat to live not to live to eat. Salt is bad for us especially people like me (African American). Toooo many of us die every year of High Blood Pressure because of toooo much sodium.

If you give it a try with an open mind and let your taste adjust...like a baby, you will really learn to enjoy vegetables in their natural state and herbs and spices instead of just salt.

Don't get me wrong...salt to me is delicious but my health and life taste so much better mentally!

You'll learn a lot of stuff about how to breath properly, how to exercise properly and tons of other stuff. Maybe you're a fitness, nutrition wiz but for me it was very educational and has changed my life!

Thanks Michael Thurmond!

Oh, and apparently the man knows what he's talking about if he was the expert on a top, Hollywood show!

Book Description

How do I decide what to do with my life when there are so many things I want to do?

It is conventional wisdom that there is one true path in life for each of us. But what about those with a wide array of interests, a dynamic curiosity about the world, and an ever-renewing wellspring of passions? Margaret Lobenstine calls these people “Renaissance Souls,” and in this groundbreaking book, she offers a life-planning strategy in tune with their dynamic, change-loving personalities. Renaissance Souls often get stuck, moving from entry-level job to entry-level job, degree to degree, or hobby to hobby, unwilling to settle on just one thing to do “for the rest of my life.” Or, after achieving success in one field, they yearn for new challenges and begin looking around for something different. Yet they are also afraid that if they pursue their changing interests, they will have to give up on financial security, becoming “a jack of all trades and master of none.”

The Renaissance Soul, the first book devoted to this personality type, not only shows that it’s possible to design a successful, vibrant life built on multiple passions, but also gives readers the practical advice to do so. Lobenstine arms the reader with powerful life-design strategies, including how to:

*Understand the exciting and powerful difference between choice and focus

*Transform your day job so that it carries your dreams forward

*Manage your time the Renaissance Soul way

*Thrive on many interests without feeling scattered

*Get paid for your passions

*Learn a new field without going back to school

*Get inspired by Renaissance Souls from ancient times to the present, from Leonardo da Vinci to Ben Franklin to Oprah Winfrey

Stocked with creative exercises, relevant resources, and interviews with successful Renaissance Souls, this profoundly inspiring guide will show readers the way to a richer, more fulfilling life—big enough to embrace all their dreams.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very validating and helpful, too!.......2007-03-23

I consider myself the very model of a Renaissance Soul: I love to read about lots of subjects; I used to garden quite fanatically; I'm in a knitting/crocheting phase right now; music is a big part of my life; and I've been doing agility and other training with our dog. Oh, and I have a day job, too! My answer to "what do you want to be when you grow up" changed so often when I was younger that it made my head spin! So I was hoping this book would help me sort out how to feel fulfilled and yet not too diluted pursuing my many interests.

And indeed it did. Here are just a few helpful tidbits I took from the book: You do have to choose a few interests at any given time, based on the things you value most, but those choices don't have to be forever. You should quit doing things that don't fit with the values you hold most dear. You can combine interests (for example, I like to write and cook -- maybe I should write about food?). You need to block time for your interests, but not be inflexible about which interest you pursue at a given time. There are lots of creative ways to get where you want to go, even if you pursue many different careers over time, without starting at Square One each time.

And so much of what the author said validated the way I approach life, even toward the end helping me understand why I sometimes feel unmotivated to do anything at all.

My only complaint is that the book starts to sound branded or jargony, with its Renaissance Soul Way and Focus Points Notebook -- kind of like the Chicken Soup series or the Finish Rich series. This Renaissance Soul finds that stuff kind of annoying. But the content was so rich and sensible that the annoyance was minor. This book has really gotten me thinking about what I need to do to more fully enjoy my many interests.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! .......2007-01-09

This book helped me to understand myself so much better. Some parts of me that others and even myself had considered negative attributes, turn out to be good things. The Focal Points part was especially helpful, helping me to take the 3 zillion things I'm interested in down to 5 to concentrate on. I have have had a little sign on my refrigerator for years that says, " Not all who wander are lost." This book helped me feel very validated and feel better about myself. I'm very thankful to the author, Margaret Lobenstine. Thank you so much.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-11-09

Finally seeing in writing what has been spinning around in my head for years has been wonderful. It has helped me realize there is nothing "wrong" with me - I just think and do things differently than other people. I love the fact that I am constantly looking for new and different things to do and think about. This book has helped me realize that I do need to learn how to focus my energy on a few things and not get overwhelmed by all the opportunities around me.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!!!! Just what I needed!.......2006-10-18

I have spent quite some time trying to decide on one "forever" career and pick between my numerous intrests and hobbies becasue I just didn't have time for them all. I have read several standard time management books, and set up SMART goals and five year plans, only to change my mind or be unable to follow through till the end, mostly because I either lost interest or couldn't imagine doing this thing or that "forever." The last few months I have been unable to do much of anything; I have finally earned my Master's and have tons of new-found spare time, but couldn't decide what to fill it with, mostly because there were so many interesting things to fill it with! So I had been stuck in indecision and been extremely "unproductive." Then I found this book!!! This book has been helpful in so many ways, none the least because I finally know there isn't anything wrong with me! There are plenty of others like me who have so many interests that we just don't know where to begin. If this sounds like you, I would highly reccommend this book. Everything else I have to say has been covered by other reviewers, but I do want to add that after figuring out my focal points, I have been able to come up with much more creative and enjoyable ways of meeting my goals then I ever did trying to make everything a SMART goal. Enjoy- I did!

4 out of 5 stars Like looking in a mirror.......2006-09-24

Anyone who has three books going at the same time, who hates the thought of constraining him- or herself to just one "thing," or who gets swallowed up for hours in a bookstore will find themselves in this book.

Lobenstine does an excellent job of describing the "renaissance" personality and helping people who fall in this category to accept and embrace their "diagnosis." She offers concrete ways of working with -- instead of against -- our personality traits.

I love feeling like I'm not alone, and I appreciated some of the concrete suggestions, but I finished this book feeling a little lost as to what my next steps should be. How do I select my four (or five) focal areas when it's nearly impossible for me to choose ANYTHING? I would have appreciated a more structured approach to winnowing -- rather than narrowing -- my choices.

Overall, though, full of tons of great inspiration, if a little light on the practical side.

Ordained minister and "spiritual life counselor" Iyanla Vanzant doesn't know the exact moment when her soul opened up "and the spirit of the divine entered [her] body." But she will always remember the key insight that opened the door to her soul and simultaneously locked the door to her insanity: "If you know who walks beside you, you can never be afraid." This is the premise from which Vanzant has launched her enormously successful 40-day, spiritual self-help program. One Day My Soul Just Opened Up is designed as day-by-day journal/workbook to help readers believe in a divine presence while pondering daily spiritual lessons such as simplicity, peace, compassion, and nonjudgement.

The charismatic Vanzant (whom Oprah Winfrey considers to be one of the world's most admirable spiritual leaders) has a gift for humble, tell-it-like-it-is talk. She is also a wise and warm soul, eager to help others trust in love and find a relationship with God in order to get on with their lives. Readers especially like her daily list of inspirations titled "Let Me Remember." For example, under day 23, "When You Feel Angry," she uses the list to remind readers: "All things work to bring me healing"; "Forgiveness will provide relief and release"; and "Love will heal anything that is not an expression of love." --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars Perception Shift.......2007-09-24

My first thoughts were that this would be an inspiration book that would give me tidbit information that I could incorporate in my life here and there. Was I pleasantly surprised how Iyanla framed this helpful information. She allows you to look at her life and how she came to certain realizations. I prefer this method. It is always helpful to know that others are practicing what they preach. So I recommend you order this book with an open mind, really apply the principles to your daily life and your perception will change...because the energy you give off will be different. I will continue to re-read this book. I have bought this book for many friends because it is just that helpful! I see my actions and my perception of life differently and in a more spiritual sense.I say, all you need to come in with, is a desire to analyze yourself...forget about Iyanla as a great author,or tv personality. This book is about being a better you and purchasing this book is a great start!

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual strength.......2007-07-12

For someone like me that has just searched a lifetime for some kind of meaning to our existance, this book is astounding. It is enlightening to discover that there are others that also become lost in the search in so that they stop searching---or so they think they do! Well worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars Life changing.......2007-04-24

I read this book six years ago. It was my last year living in a hopeless marriage of my youth. Married at 19 to someone I barely knew, I was desperate, lost, and terribly afraid of what would happen if my family knew how miserable I was.

I read the book, and found the courage to leave, to live honestly, and to take on the threats of my soon to be ex-husband. My brother called me a disgrace, my ex-husband called me an unfit mother, and still I stood my ground. I made it through, and won in the courtroom battle. No longer would he dominate and terrorize me. Years later my brother apologized. Truth wins in the end. You just have to stand with your feet firmly planted in it.

One day I read this book.. and I know when my soul opened up. It was probably already there.. in me.. that fire, that courage. But when I read this book something changed, and it became action. My pride and fear no longer controlled me. Honestly about my feelings, honestly about my mistakes, and honestly about my dreams and future won over despair and weakness.

Maybe that sounds all flowery and poetic to you. Unbelievable because it's too easy to type... and hard to live. That's okay, I would have been skeptical too.

Buy the book, read it, and then see if you don't do something poetic because of it.

3 out of 5 stars 40 days of introspection.......2007-04-06

Good book to read and review your life with. All the lessons are indepth and stir-up feelings and introspection. I would have liked more biblical principles added. All her books are great, but they miss something with me.

5 out of 5 stars I love Iyanla!.......2007-04-03

I haven't been disappointed yet. Her books always speak to my spirit and I enjoy reading them, they help you along your path of spiritual growth as well as personal growth. I usually read my books and pass them on..but not these!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ FOR EVERY PARENT OUT THERE.......2007-10-17

This book was 100% effective! We did a Diego theme potty party with my 2 1/2 year old son! What a sucess! I read the book about three time to better prepare myself for the big day and it paid off in the end! We had the potty party on a Thursday! That evening I was on cloud nine. Come Sunday, we were ALL smiling ear to ear and eager to see what MOnday had in store for my son as he would be returning back to daycare as a Big Boy! I would say that my son is 95% potty trained, if you go by the book's definition! He is wearing underwear for naps already and no "just in case pants"! So the only time my son is in Pull-Ups or "just in case pants" is at night time! He has been accident-free at school and is doing just as well at home! I would say that we get him to the bathroom in time moreso than he says "I've gotta go," but that skill is continuing to develope on a daily and even hourly basis! I recommend this book to anyone with a toddler...especially two and older!

And not only is this book great for joyfully succeeding potty training (both as a parent/teacher and child), there are many things taught and recommended, and tools provided, that can be applied in other areas of parenting! One must teach first...then train!

Go Teri Crane! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! An experience to always be remembered and WANTED TO BE REMEMBERED BY ALL!!!

Don't hesitate....BUY THE BOOK.....NOW! Allow yourself time to plan and prepare! Not something you can buy today and start tomorrow...unless you want to feel as you do right now all over again!

***** FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY *****

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for potty training any child.......2007-10-10

I bought this book after my best friend and my son's pediatritian reccommended the techniques used by Terri. I soon learned that my bigest battle for potty training my son was my readiness not his. What an eye opener. So after having my husband take the parent readiness test, we discovered that it would be better if he threw my son his potty party. And I am happy to say it worked! Since we had the party a month or so ago we have only had a couple of accidents (too preocupied) and have just conquered the overnight step, and my son is 3years and 3 months, yeah! I have to also note that I am doubly impressed with Terri. My best friend has had a terrible time, and I mean drag out, knock down, in tears terrible time with her son (same age as mine). So with nothing to loose I emailed Terri and to my surprise she called me back to give more help and suggestions. Needless to say my friend is relieved that even if things don't go smoothly, there are still ways Terri can help. Terri has so much compassion and concern for both parent and child. I never thought that I would have such an amazing expireince from just one book!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Parents of Toddlers!!.......2007-09-17

Teri Crane, the Potty Pro is outstanding. We bought her book for our 2.5 year old son and IT WORKS! We met Teri at a Potty Training Seminar, bought her book and she gave us her e-mail and phone number. Teri has even called us answering our potty training questions.

We didn't talk about potty training with our son until the day of the potty party. He never used the potty before our potty party. And during that afternoon, he went #1 in the potty. It's amazing! He loves his dolly and is so proud that he taught Dolly how to use the potty. He has gone on the potty for the last 2 weeks, with a few accidents. We threw his diapers away and he's so proud that he is a "big boy" now like Dolly! He wears big boy underwear like Dolly and even carries Dolly around with him!

Teri makes potty training fun and easy! It's a must read for all parents going through the joy of potty training their child! We are so proud of our son and he's proud of himself, thanks to Teri Crane!

3 out of 5 stars Too Overwhelming.......2007-09-07

I'm a party person, and a stay at home Mom, so I have the time. But this is a bit over the top. Even the author admits, your child will not be completely trained in one day. He or she will get there, and will be able to use the potty in one day. But for me, we'll go back to planning on several days of training, and a few weeks of consistant reinforcement. There are some great tips in the book, such as the doll to use, and the stickers, treats, etc. . . But the best tip was the little side bar leading me to the Huggies Big Kids web site. There's a ton of information there. Not a bad book, just a little over optimistic if you can't stay really exited about staying in the potty all day.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You! Thank You! It works!.......2007-08-11

First off, how can ANYONE "review" a book if they have not READ it? The negative reviews on this book are just plain silly. Just because you don't like the IDEA? Try putting the IDEA and PLAN into action and then you can honestly give a real review.

I bought this book on a whim. I've been wanting to potty train my 2 1/2 year old son for quite some time. At first I was highly skeptical! I thought, "Maybe for older kids who just need that little push. This will NOT work for my son who is completely oblivious to what's going on in his diaper!" I waited a couple of months to let life settle down. During this time he became more aware of his body and met all of the requirements in Teri's book.

Some reviewers complain about how much money you HAVE to invest and I just have to disagree. You CAN go all out, buy the most expensive doll and buy every single item on the recommended lists..or you can simplify things. I simplified our plan. I purchased a $12 "Lots to Love" doll from Wal~Mart and lots of stickers. We made our own chart up and had a nice supply of underwear on hand. I spent maybe $10 in snacks and had plenty left over to carry on through the week. You don't HAVE to do anything the book suggests, I went with the basic model and idea and we had a blast! My son was thrilled by his new baby, he was thrilled with a few new boardgames (which I would have bought anyways). He loved the attention and the games and all the books I read to him.

I didn't think my son would get into the roleplaying aspect, but he did! He fed his baby and showed his baby the potty and watched videos and read books with his baby. He named him George and he would say "Good Job George!" everytime George was successful. It was a wonderful morning and we celebrated George becoming a big boy by going to McDonalds. We got some strange looks over my SON carrying around a half naked babydoll wearing Thomas the Train underpants..but I didn't care! I proudly looked people in the eye and said "He's learning to be a big boy and is teaching his baby how to use the potty!"

I was VERY nervous about the second half of the day. Again, I was still skeptical. My son, obviously, LOVED having so much juice and treats and really got into racing Mama to the potty! He was successful the first time we tried it! Everytime he'd sit on the potty, he'd make sure George was sitting on his potty too! We went through 3 pairs of underpants that day and had a successful poo-poo in the potty! All the juice actually helped with my son's constipation problems!

We celebrated with just us. We ordered a pizza and gave our son a couple of small presents. He loved them and he loved his small little cake! You don't have to spend tons of money to teach your child simple concepts.

It has been almost 2 weeks since our party. He didn't magically train in one day, but the party kickstarted the process. He has good days and bad days..and the bad days are due to MY attitude and not being as excited about the process as I should be. He has learned so much and makes more and more advances with each passing day! He's gone from waking up in a SOAKING wet diaper, to sleeping in big boy underwear and waking up to go pee in the potty. He has gone from NO awareness to telling me in the middle of a fascinating movie "Mama I have to go pee pee!" We are on day 2 of NO accidents and I couldn't be prouder of my son! I may feel a little silly doing the pee-pee dance in a public restroom, but seeing the satisfied and happy look on my boy's face is worth all of the embarassment in the world!

The best part is the personal attention and assistance I received from Teri. I had emailed her, asking for advice on using public potties. My son was NOT interested. Imagine my surprise when I received a personal phone call from Teri herself! We had a wonderful conversation and she gave me some very helpful insight and encouragement. I told her I had recommended this book to all of my friends and the internets.

THANK YOU Teri for all of your help! I look forward to implementing your advice and am excited about my Big Boy! He is so proud of himself and I owe it all to Teri Crane!

2 out of 5 stars Unrealistic.......2007-09-29

I ordered this book because, having graduated college and tired of Ramen, I needed to know how to cut, mix and heat real food. The produce and ingredient recommendations are not for the novice cooker. It's easier to eat fat food than to eat healthy, so unless you're serious about making a change in the way you shop, frequency in shopping, and flavors you're accustomed to, get your recipes from your mom and the internet.

1 out of 5 stars BBB - Boring, Basic & for Beginners.......2007-08-23

Considering that the title itself implies the simplicity of the recipes, I feel a little bad about complaining about the quality of this book, but hey, I will anyway.
If you are a beginning cook and have never made tuna salad and/or have thought to add something other than mayonnaise to it, if you have never made a meatloaf (low fat?) or boiled a noodle, then this would be a good book for you, otherwise, the boringness of the majority of the recipes will make for a very dusty book on your shelf.

The sample recipes featured on the Amazon "Look Inside" function seemed interesting but have turned out to be the rare exception that stand out from the dull, simplistic everyday recipes that any good cook could throw together without thinking.
The crappiness and lack of inspiration in this book would make even Rachel Ray laugh out loud.

4 out of 5 stars one of the best "cooking for 1" cook books out there.......2007-08-05

as a single person who hates leftovers and freezer burn, I am always looking for recipes that will make just enough for dinner. I have bought 6 or 7 cookbooks that serve 1. this cookbook is one that I actually use. It has a variety of recipes and is easy to follow. These are recipes that you can make after a stressful day at work and know that you will have good food with a minimal about of fuss.

5 out of 5 stars The book that got me to write a review!.......2007-07-02

I've never reviewed anything before, but after finishing my delicious Orange-Glazed Pork Chops & Sweet Potatoes, I couldn't resist anymore. These recipes are healthy, delicious, and easy to make. The small portions mean that I can try something, enjoy it, and not have leftovers going bad. I haven't run into a bad recipe yet. Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars Great for anyone!.......2007-05-02

As a senior in college, I wanted to learn more about cooking but usually fell back on eating meals that were frozen or standard because any other cookbooks were geared towards 4+ diners, and I don't have the fridge space to save tons of leftovers. Additionally, my fiance and I have been interested in eating healthier for some time, but we were both novice cooks who felt uncomfortable in the kitchen. I received this cookbook for Christmas from my mother and have been continually grateful since!

Though there are no pictures (I like visuals!), I can easily follow her recipes. There are some that look a little ambitious, and I plan to work up to that when I feel more comfortable with my kitchen; in the meantime, there are more than enough quick, easy meals that I can feel GOOD eating (hey, "healthy" is in the title!). For someone like me who loves to try new tastes, she includes a wonderful variety of dishes from good-old Southern home cooking to chic European eating.

She also includes the nutritional values for every serving, which I think is an excellent feature. As many reviewers have mentioned, she divides the recipe into columns, so you can decide to cook for 1, 2, or 4. I thought, "This is cooking healthy, the portion sizes will probably be tiny." Quite the contrary! I like to eat (as does my guy), yet we ALWAYS have leftovers when we make a recipe for 2. This book will be the staple cookbook in my kitchen!

Whether from business-focused cable TV channels, newspapers, magazines, Web sites, or friends and family, investment advice comes these days from every corner. The nagging question for conscientious investors remains, though: how to separate good advice from bad? In a world of squawking television commentators and garish headlines, who and what should we trust? With Just One Thing, veteran investment writer John Mauldin offers his answer: take just the best advice, from the best investors, and discard everything else. Mauldin has solicited 12 leading investors for what each considers his most valuable insight or lesson over a long and illustrious investment career--the "one thing" he considers most important to investing--and gathered the tips for future generations of investors to learn.

The lessons which Mauldin has compiled in this thin, readable volume range widely. Some readers may enjoy the folksier tone of hedge fund manager Andy Kessler's piece, which analogizes investing to a hike up New England's Mt. Washington, on a foggy day. Other may prefer the approach of bond investor Gary Shilling, who argues for finding and developing a consistent and long-term narrative (or "story" about a market) around which to build investment picks. Yet others may find it most comforting to go with financial analyst Rob Arnott, who runs a multi-billion dollar fund for Pimco and who anchors his market analysis in deep skepticism and extensive quantitative analytics.

As with the larger market, Mauldin's group of 12 expert investors brings its own mix of philosophies, tactics, and personalities to investing, and in his notes between each selection, Mauldin is careful not to tip his hand favoring one or the other. Instead, quality for Mauldin rests in the survey of the masters, and the restriction of those masters to "just one thing" each. Mauldin should know: as the author of Bull's Eye Investing: Targeting Real Returns in a Smoke and Mirrors Market, as well as a weekly investment newsletter with readership over one million, he has seen his share of both charlatans and geniuses.

Mauldin's work can be taken a couple of different ways. For younger investors, it may provide a valuable survey of different investment philosophies, and the opportunity to learn just enough to undertake further research elsewhere. For more experienced investors it can provide the possibility of a new idea gleaned here or there, some new concept that may have been overlooked previously. Either way, both audiences will benefit from the diversity of perspectives included in this book. In an increasingly chaotic and noise-filled world, trusted sources which give such sure-handed perspective on the business of investments deserve high praise. --Peter Han

Book Description

In Just One Thing, author John Mauldin offers an incomparable shortcut to prosperity: the personal guidance of an outstanding group of recognized financial experts, each offering the single most useful piece of advice garnered from years of investing. Download Description

Today's best investment minds offer their proven investment advice With all the ""noise"" in today's financial markets, it's hard to know what things are truly critical to successful investing. That's why John Mauldin asked some of the best minds in the investment business to write about the ""one thing"" they had learned over their many years that they want their kids to know about investing and making money. The result is a fountain of individual financial wisdom that collectively makes up one of the most powerful compilations published in many years. Rather than being research-orientated and technical in nature, the ""one thing"" discussed by each seasoned and very successful investment professional is based specifically on the knowledge they have accumulated over the years. Each expert's experiences and advice are carefully distilled into separate, easy-to-grasp, brilliantly written essays-so that investors of all levels can understand and implement the strategies revealed. Besides discussing a single investment principle, each contributor also shares their experiences in the markets, so that readers can learn how to take advantage of profitable opportunities as well as avoid costly pitfalls. John Mauldin (Houston, TX), President of Millennium Wave Investments, is primarily involved in private money management, financial services, and investments. He is author and editor of the popular Thoughts from the Frontline e-newsletter, which goes to over one million readers weekly. Throughout the year, Mauldin speaks at numerous investment conferences and seminars. He is also the author of the Wiley bestseller, Bull's Eye Investing (0-471-65543-0).

4 out of 5 stars Good for long-term.......2007-05-21

Because it's a compilation of strategies from 12 investors, analysts and traders, the book will help get you ideas for LONG-TERM, and make you (hopefully) more humble and better inveestors. It has no new ideas for short-term capital-gain-seekers out there, but i like the book as a light reading.

3 out of 5 stars Just One Thing.......2007-01-30

An investor`s handbook-suitable for picking up and reading one chapter at a time. Has some useful tips for avoiding disasters.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Investing.......2007-01-18

I picked this book up on the recommendation of the editor in one of his newsletters. I respect his work, so I decided to bite. I was not disappointed! This book is an easy read - well-written and edited - it gives the best advice from the top investors (i.e. successful). Each one actually has a different "one" thing, but the financial markets and opportunities are so diverse that it results in a great reference book.

You may not use every "technique" that is discussed, but you will understand the world of finance and investing much better. You will also likely find one or two chapters that are particularly well-suited to your own investment interests and capabilities. I keep it near my chair for re-reading. The topics are not aimed at any current "hot trend", but at long-term strategies in a variety of markets. As such it is an invaluable resource for the casual investor who wants to avoid costly mistakes.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2007-01-04

I am a very experienced investor and didn't expect much from this little volumn; however, I was wrong. There are some real pearls here that I have used sucessfully. It is worth a read, but it is not for the novice investor.

4 out of 5 stars Just One Thing.......2006-11-05

Very good, but will require follow-up research to define a clear
methodology for the particular strategy.

Book Description

Harlan Coben, author of the coast-to-coast bestseller No Second Chance, delivers an emotionally powerful thrill-ride of a novel that asks the question: How far would you go to protect your family?

An ordinary snapshot causes a mother's world to unravel in an instant. After picking up her two young children from school, Grace Lawson looks through a newly developed set of photographs. She finds an odd one in the pack: a mysterious picture from perhaps twenty years ago, showing four strangers she can't identify. But there is one face she recognizes—that of her husband, from before she knew him.

When her husband sees the photo that night, he leaves their home and drives off without explanation. She doesn't know where he's going, or why he's leaving. Or if he's ever coming back. Nor does she realize how dangerous the search for him will be. Because there are others interested in both her husband's past and that photo, including Eric Wu: a fierce, silent killer who will not be stopped from finding his quarry, no matter who or what stands in his way.

Her world turned upside-down, filled with doubts about her herself and marriage, Grace must confront the dark corners of her own tragic past she struggles to learn the truth, find her husband, and save her family.

3 out of 5 stars Had promise, not sure if it delivered. .......2007-09-12

I would if pressed give this book a 3.5. Overall I thought the plot was good and well written. However, what I did have a problem with was the fact that there was a great deal of time building the puzzle/mystery, and then when it was revealed I found myself saying "I just don't get it,is that it"? It just seemed like a little toooo much effort, for toooo little results.

However, I will not spend this time rehashing the plot, which most reviewers have already done, I will spend it briefly giving you an idea of why you should read this novel. Grace, the sole survivor of a massacre that occurred at a rock concert(known as the Boston Massacre), has been living her life for over 10 years with only her limp to remind her of the events of that fateful night (she doesn't really remember the incident or what really happened, only what people have told her). Having met her soulmate, and wonderful husband, Jack in France while she was recovering, she thinks life couldn't be any better. She has two small children and has become a successful artist. Anyway, her life begins to spiral out of control when she discovers an old photo in her picture order of her husband Jack with four other people, among them a picture of girl with her face crossed out. After she confronts Jack with the photo (which he denies any knowledge of), he leaves the house to never be heard from again. Grace doesn't understand what any of this could mean, and starts out to discover the truth. On the journey to the truth, Grace's life is influenced by several people, among them a grieving mobster (Vespa), who wants revenge; supportive friends (Cora); a killer confessing; a United States Attorney and brother who wants answers to who killed his sister; a crazed killer (Woo); a nosey neighbor who learns more than most about the truth; a sister-in-law with secrets to hide; and an interesting plot that begins to unravel leaving you with more questions than answers. With several killings and other evil deeds, the plot of why was Jack taken eventually comes to light. So even though you will still have a few questions at the end of the story, you would have enjoyed the winding road that you took to get you there.

5 out of 5 stars JUST ONE LOOK.......2007-09-07

If you are looking for a synopsis of this book, you can read the previous hundred plus reviews, they all did a good job. Well, all the other five star reviews, anyway. If you are just looking for a recommendation of this book, or any other book by this author, I'll say this...Go ahead and purchase any, really any, book by Harlan Coben, you won't be disappointed. My only disappointment is that this is the last Harlan Coben book that I hadn't read yet and as far as I know he doesn't have another one coming out anytime soon. The reason why I kept this one on the back burner was, in part because of some previous reviews that stated that this novel was only mediocre.

I'm not a published author, an English professor, or a real academic type, so if there is sloppy writing, or gross errors in style, living in the pages of Just One Look, as another reviewer has mentioned, I (average Joe reader) didn't notice them. In fact, even if there were errors, I would have been too busy trying to figure out the mystery and enjoying every word on every page to notice much else, which also includes husbands, kids, dogs, and TV.

Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Coben delivers the thrills!.......2007-08-24

Harlan Coben's JUST ONE LOOK is another great formulaic thriller by the author. Coben's THE INNOCENT, NO SECOND CHANCE and GONE FOR GOOD, if you read them around the same time, will all seem familiar. You'll note the familiar plot points, twists and turns, characterizations. So, though Coben breaks no new ground here, he still delivers an incredible novel that is perhaps the darkest of most of his recent thrillers.

The suspense and thrills all evolve around one mysterious photograph. The photo shows up in a role of pictures Grace Lawson just picked up from the fotomat. Inside this batch of new photos, Grace finds and old picture of 5 college students. One girl has her face X-d out and one of the bearded men appears to be her husband Jack. She is curious about how the picture got in with her new photos and when Jack gets home she shows him the picture. Jack asks her where the picture came from then vanishes within minutes. Why did he vanish? Who was in the picture with her husband?

This novel, like many others of Coben, features a tragic event that happened in the past that is ultimately tied to the pain of the present. Grace has a history of her own. Many years ago, she earned her fifteen minutes of fame by being the only survivor of a panic-driven stampede at a rock concert. Eighteen kids died that night, but Grace didn't, and her survival meant a lot to the familes of the victims. So, while Grace has a tragic event in her past, what could the picture featuring her husband be about that could cause him to vanish.

The plot moves quickly as Grace tries to find out the truth. She is aided by Carl Vespa, a mafia type goon whose son died in the stampede. She is also aided by an the actions of a suffering housewife and an obsessed district attorney. Coben's writing is fun and he makes many solid observations through his characters. Don't worry, the twists keep coming until the final page, and although they all might not be believable, they all tend to make sense. My only complaint is the "incident" that ties Jack Lawson with the four people in the picture and also makes them fear for their lives isn't one that should necessarily be that threatening. But if you can suspend your disbelief for a moment, and you must do that reading a Coben novel, you'll find this novel just as enjoyable as all the others.

Coben is one of my favorite authors, and I have yet to read any of his books featuring sports agent Myron Bolitar. I look forward to reading those as well. JUST ONE LOOK is a book definitely worth checking out!

5 out of 5 stars The Author Certainly Knows How to Write a Thriller.......2007-08-11

Harlan Coben continues to prove that he is one of the best thriller writers around at the moment. A page turner is a much used phrase but in this case it is really appropriate. The author's books are always so well structured and his character's well rounded. He is obviously comfortable with his style and ability and this transmits itself to the reader making the reading of his books sheer pleasure from start to finish. Coben has now got a string of best selling crime novels behind him and all I can say is that I hope he continues to write for many years to come. The author lives in New Jersey with his wife and four children.

A convicted hitman suddenly decides to confess to a murder that occurred over twenty years ago. He says that he killed the sister of the District Attorney. Why he decided to own up to the killing now no one knows, as he refuses to reveal his reasons. This is only the start of some links to the past. The book continues at a fast pace in the tradition Harlan Coben way.

3 out of 5 stars LURE THAT READER WITH A HOOK THEN A TWIST.......2007-06-07

Grace Lawson is in big trouble...she just doesn't know it yet. She's an ordinary suburban housewife. She's happily married, has two children, a house, a minivan and a penchant for photographing family outings. When she picks up her latest set of developed photographs she is startled to find an old photo containing five people (one who looks strikingly similar to her husband, Jack) nestled among her new pics.

This is the beginning of a conundrum that revisits a 20 year old accident that left Grace with a physical impairment and an unlikely connection to a local Mafia boss. When Jack disappears, Grace becomes embroiled in a situation that poses a serious threat to her family. Determined to find Jack as well as discover what part the old photograph plays in the puzzle, Grace embarks on a course that brings her face to face with a brutal killer.

Like a dislodged bit of snow that begins its tumble down a mountainside gathering more and more speed until to turns into a full scale avalanche, Just One Look is a story that continues building clue upon clue, assailing your senses and stimulating your powers of detection until you're sure you have the solution. Corben, however, is a superb storyteller and when all the plot and sub-plot threads are brought together we find that the solution is unexpected and holds more than one unanticipated surprise.

5 out of 5 stars IT WORKS!!!!!!!.......2007-09-03

I listened to the CD 3 nights in a row - too nervous the first time, relaxed the second time and fell asleep the 3rd time. By the 4th morning, I never picked up a cigarette again and I have smoked 2 packs a day for 28 years. Thank you Susan Hepburn - I'm looking for a CD on weight loss - I thought the book said that was in the works. I will purchase the day it hits the markets!

5 out of 5 stars It worked for me but..........2007-08-27

...the label could be misleading.

This book will not magically make you a non-smoker overnight. You have to do your part to stay free of smoking (i.e. The CD is instrumental to ease and jump start first a few days or week but you also need to stay committed to be a smoke free person after that).

Thank you Susan Hepburn!

5 out of 5 stars It's all in your head........2007-07-25

I purchased this book and CD after reading all of the reviews I could find.
I was desperate to try something besides the patch or gum.
I've smoked 1.5 - 2 packs for 32 years and had only quit twice before for short periods of time. I was so confident that it would work after reading some great reviews and I believe that is why it did work for me. I believe I wanted it bad enough so my mind was very open to the suggestions. It's not weakness of the mind that makes hypnosis work it's strength.
I too fell asleep..I think. I'm not going to say I never craved one again, I still do sometimes and it's been 4 months, however it was easier than any other time I've quit.
So if you want it to work it will, if you're ready and your mind is open to it.
Good luck.

5 out of 5 stars it really works.......2007-01-22

My 20 yo son and 24 yo friend BOTH quit using this book and CD. They both said it was very easy. Worth way more than the price.

Book Description

In Just One More Thing Peter Falk — award-winning actor — takes us behind-the-scenes into his professional and private life. Starting in Hartford, where he worked as a management analyst for the Connecticut State Budget Bureau., Falk was no more successful than at an earlier attempt to work with the CIA. He then turned to an old college interest: acting. Falk came to prominence in 1956 in the successful Off-Broadway revival of The Iceman Cometh. Although he worked continuously for the next three years, a theatrical agent advised him not to expect much work in motion pictures because of his glass eye. Surgeons had removed his right eye, along with a malignant tumor, when he was three years old.

But in 1958, Falk landed his first movie, Murder Incorporated, and was nominated for an Oscar. A Pocketful of Miracles garnered his second Oscar nomination, but it was through his collaboration with filmmaker John Cassavetes that Falk entered into his most creative period in 1970 when movies such as A Woman Under the Influence helped launch the independent film movement.

Through television, however, Falk reached his widest audience — portraying the inimitable Lieutenant Columbo throughout the 1970s and winning four Emmys.

5 out of 5 stars Columbo is #1........2007-07-18

I just finished reading this book on July 14th,and it was great.Lots of info about Peter, and his many adventures.Good detail stories of all his movies he made, however, there is not much about his Columbo movies, but still a great book. I am glad I bought it, cause I enjoyed it, and that is what it is all about.

4 out of 5 stars Peter Falk doesn't quite tell all.......2007-07-02

This is not a straightforwad autobiography, but a collection of anecdotes, and you may wish that there were more details about Peter Falk's long and interesting life.

However, the stories in this book are interesting, and most are funny, and you will learn a lot about Mr Falk from reading this. My favourite story is of how he was persuaded to make a film for Roumanian TV to reasure the people of Roumania that the government was not witholding episodes of 'Columbo' from them. And I loved the story of how he came to not appear in 'The Godfather'. I was delighted to learn that the raincoat he wears in 'Columbo' is his very own, not a prop, and hangs in his closet.

Although it would have been nice to have more details, this book is great fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Yuo MUST read his book! .......2007-05-25

I have met Peter Falk throughout the years I worked in the film business .. I last saw him at the memorial for Lee Wolfberg, my boss at one time . we both spoke .. Peter was terrific . he came up to me to tell me I was terrific . Wow . . He and I chatted a bit .. perhaps he would need me to work for him .. well, I had to get his book .. I could NOT put it down .. AND . I tend to read a few pages of a book and forget about it:( .. His book is so well written . in 'his words' . .vignettes .. perfect title 'just one more thing' .. I laughed out loud .. all alone . it is just a wonderful book AND . .I thank him for putting the lovely photo of Lee Wolfberg (& Peter) in the book . how MUCH Lee would have loved that .. they were good friends .

You HAVE to read the book . and read it again . he overcame the loss of his eye when he was 3 . teased . of course:( by kids .. but he learned to make a joke of the 'glass eye' .. I reminded him of the time he was doing COLUNBO . I was working for Don Adams & Lee Wolfberg when he came by . he said hello to Don .. I told him that Don said 'Peter, Lee does not remember which of your eyes is the glass one?' . . Peter was amazed that I remembered that . but I was SO embarrassed (no knowing his sense of humor then) I could NOT forget it .. Peter, picked up a spoon and hit his glass (plastic) eye twice .. Don & Lee laughed . I think I tried to hide under the table . but he is a wonderful person & you WILL love his book .. PLEASE read it!

5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2007-05-13

I bought this for my mother for Christmas,I read every word and laughed myself purple before I wrapped it. Written in a series of short "day in the life" style stories, expect to laugh so hard you'll need to remember to breathe and be utterly charmed even if you've never seen Columbo.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining Vignettes from an Interesting Life.......2007-02-15

The book reads like Columbo wrote it. It has anecdotes with unexpected punchlines. The understatement is deceptively intelligent. There are signature illustrations that show talent in the visual arts. Falk has traveled widely and has had many unique adventures.

As an actor Falk likes to develop his character along with writers and directors. He tells us how he re-writes lines and finds ad libs that work. He's rejected jobs because the character wasn't real, and he gets enthusiastic about scripts with a well constructed character. He names the talented actors and directors he's enjoyed working with and writes some interesting vignettes about Brando (never heard this before!), Dunaway, DiLaurentis and others. Columbo, as we iconize him, is Falk's creation from the crumpled coat to the battered Peugot.

The reader will enjoy this time with Falk, but won't learn much about him personally. His childhood is represented by a few high school tales. He talks fondly of two wives, the first one just vanishes from the text. You learn he has 2 daughters through a photo.

But we learn that Falk is an adventurer, with a positive attitude who makes long term friends. The book does not purport to be an autobiography, merely a set of stories, and in this, it meets its goal.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-09-05

My teacher used "The World's Shortest Stories" for a lesson one day. I've never paid so much attention during one class period! I thought it was incredible the way these tiny, 55-word stories could be so little, yet have so much meaning behind them. Each story was thought provoking. Dispite their size, they all have some kind of "twist" to it. I was inspired and immediately wanted to write my own 55-word story.

If you're looking for inspiration for writing, this is for you. If you're a great writer and want to try this style of writing, you have to check it out. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Even if you don't want to write a 55-word story yourself, this book will get you thinking differently. It's almost like solving puzzles, reading these stories. Murder, Love, Horror, Suspense... that's not all the book is about. There's many more topics inside. No one story is like the other. I found this book one of the best books I've come across.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-06-23

Absolutely terrible. The "authors" in this collection are amateurs who consistently fall victim to the predictable traps. These stories are filled with cliches, gimmicks and unsurprising surprise endings. Even worse, it feels as if they were all written by the same unimaginative author with a corny sense of humor. Get one of the Flash Fiction or Sudden Fiction collections instead if you're looking for something that actually has some literary value.

5 out of 5 stars 55 word salute, er, review..........2006-11-07

This book is one that I reread frequently, as the stories are indeed the perfect length. Broken into categories, the stories cover the range of plot possibilities and human emotions, and are perfect for the shorter-attention span of modern readers. Fifty-five fiction even accepts submissions from regular authors. Try writing one yourself today!

5 out of 5 stars Great teaching tool - used selectively.......2006-08-26

I teach 7th and 8th grade, many second language and non-standard english students. The 55 word stories provide an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the reading/thinking skills of inferencing, drawing conclusions and also a springboard for introducing and explaining the background of euphemisms and common sayings and figures of speech that are not familiar to second language readers.

3 out of 5 stars Some Hit, Some Miss!.......2004-11-02

This collection of the world's shortest stories (as with most collections and anthologies of shortest stories) is a "hit or miss" collection. Basically, this means that while some of the stories are clever, others are flat-out duds. Most of the story's cleverness relies on unsuspected plot twists and ironies in the ending, thus making for an amusing read but bringing little to the table in the world of quality literature. Some of the stories are simply too minimilistic to have any emmotional impact on the reader, and others are very cliche and border on poetry. Instead of buying this book or any collection of "shortest" fiction, I would suggest seeking out specific authors who are masters of the shorter story, such as Raymond Carver. While none of Carver's stories are as short as 55 words, just one of his good shorter stories ("Popular Mechanics," for example) will pack a more poignant punch than any of the stories in this collection -- combined.
