Book Description

In this inspiring book, based on her twenty years of research, highly acclaimed author and teacher Louise DeSalvo reveals the healing power of writing. DeSalvo shows how anyone can use writing as a way to heal the emotional and physical wounds that are an inevitable part of life. Contrary to what most self-help books claim, just writing won't help you; in fact, there's abundant evidence that the wrong kind of writing can be damaging. DeSalvo's program is based on the best available and most recent scientific studies about the efficacy of using writing as a restorative tool. With insight and wit, she illuminates how writers, from Virginia Woolf to Henry Miller to Audre Lorde to Isabel Allende, have been transformed by the writing process. Writing as a Way of Healing includes valuable advice and practical techniques to guide and inspire both experienced and beginning writers. "An exquisite gift of grace. It will help you write yourself out of the wilderness of pain and denial into Wholeness." -Sarah Ban Breathnach, author of Simple Abundance

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Inspirational.......2006-04-19

Although the book was not quite what I was expecting, i.e. a book that teaches you how to journal, I found it exceptional nonetheless. It was inspirational as it shared stories of other writers who write to save their sanity and souls. It also offered useful techniques to get you thinking about your memories and how to record them.

I highly recommend this very readable book.

5 out of 5 stars Validation Personified.......2005-04-02

My daughter Debbi gave me this book for my birthday. I read Ms. DeSalvo's book when I was in the final stages of confronting the tragic suicide of my father that happened two days before my high school Senior Prom. For nearly fifty years after the day my entrepreneur father put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger his death gnawed at me. By facing what happened to me on that dreary spring day in Boston and trying to make sense of my Pop's state of mind on the day he died I was able to dig down deep into my soul and describe how I felt. I opened up my heart and was able to face a time only years had kept at bay. By writing about my heretofore-suppressed feelings I began to sob over the keyboard and took my first steps to understand why my father died. Desalvo's book validated my earlier conclusion that writing is truly a way of healing.

5 out of 5 stars A motivating book on writing.......2005-03-25

No book can teach you to write, unless it is a formulaic recipe, cookbook sort of guide. Writing as a Way as Healing is exceptional because it has a particular point of view regarding the value of writing--specifically, exploring dis-ease through the written word. DeSalvo focuses on PROCESS, which is the simple idea that through writing one discovers how to write, and what particular story one is destined to write. This alone is invaluable advice since much writing is pre-packaged and pre-determined so that it is predictable. Both experienced and inexperienced writers can take this advice to heart since it encourages one not to feel as though writer's block is not having anything to write about, but rather not finding what one needs to write about. The book is supplemented by both references and quotes from well-known writers who have written about pain and illness, and includes empirical data about the healing power of writing. This is a good book. Period.

5 out of 5 stars Heal Thyself - Write.......2004-10-26

To show how powerful this book is, I write a Barbara Garro Poem as my review--

Your Choices Create Your Life

Sheer will allows life undamaged
Sheer will refuses to allow compromise of your happiness
Sheer will creates freedom of choice
And choice allows life

No one can hold your conversation
No one can take your freedom
No one will create your life

Louise DeSalvo created a book in "Writing as a Way of Healing" to get you to this place of freedom and choice.

3 out of 5 stars Should we do what Virginia did?.......2004-06-12

This book presents Virginia Woolf as an example of someone who used writing for healing. But how much did writing really help Woolf? Woolf committed suicide. To me that indicates that any healing methods she used were inadequate.

When this book arrived in the mail I was excited and hopeful. Then I opened it and almost immediately saw Virginia Woolf's name. My heart sank. I make it a practice never to take the advice of people who eventually commit suicide. Rather, I study their lives to learn what NOT to do.

A better book on the same topic is "Opening Up: The Healing Power of Expressing Emotions" by James Pennebaker. It's based solidly on research, not on the literature of suicides.

Book Description

Story is the heart of language. Story moves us to love and hate and can motivate us to change the whole course of our lives. Story can lift us beyond our individual borders to imagine the realities of other people, times, and places. Storytelling -- both oral tradition and written word -- is the foundation of being human.

In this powerful book, Christina Baldwin, one of the visionaries who started the personal writing movement, explores the vital necessity of re-creating a sacred common ground for each other's stories. Each chapter in Storycatcher is carried by a fascinating narrative -- about people, family, or community -- intertwined with practical instruction about the nature of story, how it works, and how we can practice it in our lives. Whether exploring the personal stories revealed in our private journals, the stories of family legacy, the underlying stories that drive our organizations, or the stories that define our personal identity, Christina's book encourages us all to become storycatchers -- and shows us how new stories lay the framework for a new world.

In her acceptance speech Christina Baldwin said, "The people struggling with MS have important, brave, and heart-opening stories to share. Looking at the Multiple Sclerosis website and other sources, I was so glad to see the emphasis on people sharing their journeys with this disease and the ways you are already honoring story."

Books for a Better Life started ten years ago with the intention of giving credit to the group of authors who have impacted the last half of the 20th century more than any other genre of writers. 5 out of 5 stars Magnificent! A real gem of a book..........2005-10-18

Christina Baldwin's work on Story...the art, the practice, the importance of telling and re-telling stories in our lives is a stunning masterpiece. Woven beautifully with fragments and selections of her own stories, Baldwin once again instructs, enchants and inspires the reader about the critical nature and importance of the individual stories of all of us. Whether it's to build community, heal generational wounds, create stronger organizations, leave a legacy, or simply to pass on information, Baldwin's narrative builds a compelling case for the power of "storycatching." A magnificent read...and a wonderful gift to give. What will be the questions you carry to ask of yourself and others? A must-have!!

5 out of 5 stars Storycatcher Spreads Hope.......2005-10-04

Christina Baldwin's Storycatcher tells stories of hope. She articulates beautifully the power and necessity of sharing story with those around us to build webs of connection, to build community, to provide a bridge to understanding. We all have a story. Baldwin's genius shines through showing us how to bring story into the center of our lives through telling her own story. This book is a work of love and brilliance that brings light into the world.

Book Description

John Nikkah asked one simple question: What do the boys think? From the best-selling Ophelia Speaks to the "girl power" movement, teenage girls are speaking their minds and having their due.But what about the boys?Aside from the works of a few academics, there seems to be no outlet in today's media for the true voices of teen-age boys.Until now.John contacted over 5,000 schools across the country looking for the voices of America's boys. What are their goals, their fears, their hopes, their dreams? What are their lives really like as they stand on the verge of manhood?OUR BOYS SPEAK takes the best of hundreds of entries from boys aged 12-18 from varied racial, economic, religious, and regional backgrounds. The essays, poems, diary entries and stories cover topics ranging from sex and dating, sports, religion, depression, violence, video games, family, and just about everything in between. And narrating the essays is John Nikkah, who comes to new understandings about his own teenage years through the raw voices he encounters. This is a book for parents, for teens, for educators and for the heart.OUR BOYS SPEAK is just that.It is our sons, our friends, our neighbors, our families, ourselves.Sometimes painful, sometimes joyful, OUR BOYS SPEAK is most of all truthful and real. AUTHORBIO: John Nikkah is a graduate student in Clinical Psychology at the New School for Social Research in New York City. His clinical and research experience includes working with adolescents as an Assistant Recreational Therapist at the New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center.

3 out of 5 stars Our Boys Speak.......2007-06-29

Overall I found the stories relayed by the boys to be touching and sweet. The book is worth reading whether you are a parent or educator. I gave the book three stars instead of five because I found the introductions to the various chapters to be poorly written and trite, not to mention repetative. All in all I think the insight the book provides into the minds of boys outweighs the boring editorials at the beginning of each chapter by the author.

4 out of 5 stars A good book, which has something written by me in it..........2000-06-23

Well, the book finally came out and I picked up a copy of it. All in all, I think it's a pretty good book. It's nice to see writings by boys my age in the midst of all of today's pop-culture "girl power" nonsense. Anyway, one of the writings in this book is by me.."My Perfect Wish" on page 141, I believe. So if you read this and have the book, check it out. Anyway..all in all, the book came out well.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Read.......2000-06-14

This was incredibly pentetrating look into the minds and soul of young men. Putting this book down was almost impossible. Reading it, I was on the verge of tears many times. This book really shed light on what growing up must feel like in this day and age. I have to say that my heart goes out to all of the boys featured in the book. I applaud the young men for having the courage to speak out.

5 out of 5 stars Good for parents.......2000-06-11

As a father to two teenage boys, I got this book to help me understand them. And it did. I read the book in less than a week and was very moved by the letters I read. It also helped open up communication with my kids. I gave it to them after I read and we talked about it afterward. I strongly recommend it to parents.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2000-05-18

A refreshing alternative to the oft-sloppy, pop-psychological scrutiny our country's young men have been subject to in the past few years.

5 out of 5 stars Writing as a Way Through Life.......2006-07-11

Poetry, fiction, blending photographs and writing, children's picture books, diaries and dream journals, your life story--whatever you want to write, you'll find help here. Billed as "a writing handbook for senior adults" I think it is useful for any age. . . it's just that seniors have more life experiences to review

Francis Kazemek tells us how to honor memory, how to begin, how to see ourselves as writers (someone who WRITES!), how to receive support through writing groups, and how to appreciate the gifts writing brings to our life ("Living with Grace, Force, and Fascination.") His writing style is clear, graceful, and easy to follow as he leads us along this path.

This is a good compilation of accepted contemporary writing advice (good advice and examples on revising), sparked with brilliant new ideas like the children's picture book using your family photographs.

Definitely worth a place on your writing table.

--Janet Riehl, author "Sightlines: A Poet's Diary"

4 out of 5 stars Help for Memoir, Journal and Poetry Writers.......2006-07-05

I really liked the variety of writing styles suggested in this book. The list poem is one I'd never seen before and I can think of a number of ways to use it for my personal memories.
For prose writing, it gives you structure for writing about a memorable person, writing inspired by old photographs, and even dabbles in writing a children's book.
It will get you thinking and hopefully, writing about your life experiences.

5 out of 5 stars Practical guidance for writing your story..........2003-04-25

In the classes that we have taught on life review, the single biggest question that we have heard is, "How do I write my story so that it will be interesting?" Indeed, most life stories are, well, a drag. They are a series of vignettes with no coordinated point or direction. In this little volume Francis Kazemak helps the reader avoid the trap of poor writing. He holds your hand through the process of learning to write your story well, in a number of different formats (poetry, as well as prose). As far as English teachers go, he is engaging and not pedantic (in my experience, no small miracle!). He provides good examples and clear instructions. This is a solid roadmap in the designated journey of writing your life story.

Book Description

The ancient rabbis believed that the world rests on three pillars: study, worship, and good deeds. It is said that the greatest of these is study, for it leads to the other two. But exactly how does the modern Jewish reader go about studying the Mishnah, Talmud, and Midrash --- the great ancient and often hard-to-comprehend texts of our tradition? And how do we glean the great insights and wisdom from these sacred texts, which inspired our ancestors, and apply them to our modern lives?

With guidance from renowned author and educator Barry Holtz, these ancient texts take on new meaning for us. He provides a framework for exploring our thinking about God, prayer, and ritual, as well as social issues, such as charity, friendship, and justice. His new study guide helps readers and study groups launch their exploration of the ancient texts, posing probing questions to help them stay engaged as they pursue their quest for a deeper understanding of their faith.

This spiritual and spirited book, a sequel to Holtz's classic Back to the Sources, is a must-read for adult Jewish learners and educators alike.

Book Description

In Ancient Secrets, a distinguished rabbi and psychologist takes a thoughtful, wise, and fresh approach to showing us how to apply the stories of the Bible to our everyday lives.

Rabbi Levi Meier is one of Los Angeles's best-known spiritual advisers. He is the chaplain at the famed Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, a biblical scholar, author, and a practicing clinical psychologist. Whether he is providing religious advice to the weary and ill, consoling the dying, or preaching the value of decency in a confused world, Rabbi Meier is a teacher who can make a 3,200-year-old text, recorded by the ancients on scrolls, relevant to our times and to future generations.

Using the Five Books of Moses as his guide, Rabbi Meier shows us how the Torah's stories and teachings apply to contemporary existence. In the manner of Robert Fulghum and William Bennett, Meier employs a straightforward and engaging style to teach us how to better fulfill our own lives-and those of our families, friends, and colleagues-as well as to improve the society in which we live.

An incredible book, Rabbi Levi Meier captivates me with his words. There is so much "life" wisdom in these pages, it is a book I will keep forever!

4 out of 5 stars A perfect guide to using the Torah to improve our own lives.......1999-03-15

In these days where fundamentalist spiritual leaders demand to accept a simple interpretation of the Bible, Rabbi Meier uses his gifts as a rabbi and a Jungian analyst to open the Bible to all of us, not as a narrow document with one solution for all, but as a series of enduring stories which offer insight into our lives today. It proves that the reason the Torah endures is that it tells stories with universal meanings, that are as fresh today, millenia after the actual events, as they were when they were first told. Rabbi Meier shows how the Bible offers insight on a variety of issues from sexuality to honesty. He explains when the Torah instructs us not to bear false witness (that is, not to lie), it also allows us to lie--so as not to infflict pain. Perhaps, most important for the contemporary reader are the insights the Torah provides us on sexuality. Sex is not merely a means of pleasure, but one of communication and understanding. The Torah tells us that sexual intimacy MUST become a means of learning about our partner, not just for sexual intimacy, but also a means to spiritual intimacy. Rabbi Meier supplements this lesson from the Torah with lessons he has learned from his clients: the main cause of infidelity is a lack of communication between the partners. It is this ability to link the stories from the Torah to the knowledge he has gained in counseling clients (people seeing psychological help and spirtual guidance) that is the real strength of this book and it's why I recommend it highly. The language can be a little too simplistic at times, but at least that makes it easy to read. It's a good book and I dare say that it is one that I will continue to turn to for many years to come.

4 out of 5 stars You don't have to be Jewish to digest this book.......1997-10-07

There are three R's on the menu of Bible study...Reading, Reciting, and Remembering...but they are a mere apértif in the quenching of an enduring spiritual thirst. In this provocatively titled book, Levi Meier serves up a main course which serious Bible students, both kosher and Christian, can dig into with relish. With scholarly and insightful interpretations from the first five books of the Old Testament, Rabbi Meier sprinkles his book with such observations as, "Spiritual transformations take place more often in the gutter than in a soft bed," and "Joseph's brothers sold him into slaveryŠwe don't do thatŠwe sue." There are other tasty tidbits to savor (did you know that, in Hebrew, an angel is called an ISH?), but he is seriously informative addressing difficult subjects, such as the ambiguities of life, the significance of biblical paradox, and the usefulness of evil in the world. (His comments on page 182 about death are particularly poignant in light of the worldwide reaction to the recent loss of Princess Diana.) Can we expect a 249-page book to deliver more? This one does. In his own review, the author emphasizes his modern-day applications of Bible truths, but for me, his real-life anecdotes as a clinical psychologist and hospital chaplain were icing on the cake, not the meat-and-potatoes of his book. Through the courses of each chapter, Rabbi Meier delivers a nourishing, inspirational meal.

      Book Description

In this remarkable second book in the Children of Conflict series, Laurel Holliday presents a powerful collection of young people's memories of growing up in the midst of the violence in Northern Ireland known as "The Troubles."

"All my life I have been afraid. When it would get dark I would lie in bed and be frightened to move in case men would be outside who were going to smash the doors in with a sledge hammer and then shoot whoever is in the house as they have done before."
      -- Bridie Murphy, age twelve

More than sixty Catholic and Protestant children, teenagers, and adults chronicle their coming-of-age experiences in the war zone, from bomb-devastated Belfast to the terrorist-ridden countryside.

"It was like my head exploded. It's an experience you can't really understand -- getting shot in the head -- unless it's happened to you.
-- Stephen Robinson, wounded while walking home from secondary school

For the first time in thirty years there is some hope for an end to the murders and bombings that have wounded more than 40,000. But the ravages of war remain indelibly etched on the minds and souls of the generation known as children of "The Troubles."

4 out of 5 stars A Moving Collection of Essays.......2004-05-10

Laragh Cullen is a young woman who grew up in Dungannon, County Tyrone, in Northern Ireland. She tried her hand at poetry when she was eleven years old and her words are among those included in the book CHILDREN OF THE TROUBLES. Laragh states:
      I'm tired of the sirens
      The town's like a cage
      I wish there was peace
      I'm eleven years of age.
Her words describe the many challenges faced by the children who grew up in war torn Ireland, yet the hope for peace is also evident in many of these same young voices. This is the subject of the book CHILDREN OF THE TROUBLES.

CHILDREN OF THE TROUBLES is a collection of stories by people living in Northern Ireland during what has is referred to as "the troubles." Most of the pieces included in the collection are written by adults who grew up in the midst of the strife between Catholics and Protestants in this divided section of the world. While the entries were written by adults, the experiences mentioned in the book took place when the writers were young.

The book is divided into three sections, the first dealing with situations which take place in Belfast, the area that was most affected by the strife. The second section deals with how the strife affected other counties of Northern Ireland. The third section deals with those who tried to remain neutral.

The editor, Laurel Holliday, has edited similar works involving children in Israel and Palestine, African Americans in American inner-city environments, and diaries of children of the Holocaust. The selections in this volume were written by a variety of people both Catholic and Protestant, of all educational levels, some victims, and some who were in the midst of the violence. Each of the voices in this work shows us what we probably already know, or should know, but never seem to learn, namely that we are all more similar than we realize. We also get a clear sense that while it may be religion that divides many of the people of Northern Ireland, theology, spirituality or God rarely enter into the debate.

The strength of this volume would be the stories themselves. Most of them are accompanied by a photograph of the person telling the story which makes the reader see that the accounts involve actual people who lived through these horrendous years, and many are thought provoking. People reading the book will not find it a depressing work. Many of the entries are hope-filled and also show that even though there was strife and violence in their homeland, many of the young people did experience the normal joys and adventures of childhood.

4 out of 5 stars Children's Experiences During the Troubles.......2000-04-26

Laurel Holliday has put together a powerful collection of sixty children's experiences during the violent and turbulent war of cultural differences known as "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland.

After posting advertisements in newspapers around Northern Ireland, Holliday received responses from both Catholic and Protestant individuals who had an experience to share about their lives during the "Troubles."

These powerful and sometimes disturbing stories show the bravery and danger these children (some of whom are now adults) faced during the conflicts prior to the cease-fire in 1994 as well as their tentative hopes for a peaceful future.

After personally experiencing New Years 2000 in Belfast, I can only hope that the peace agreement holds and that the differences between people can be embraced rather than fought. The future children of Northern Ireland deserve to experience a life of peace in a beautiful country with a tremendously difficult history.

"Children of the Troubles" is an excellent book for both adults and children. The stories are powerful and moving with photographs included of most of the children who bravely share their stories.

      Book Description

In this powerful book, Carol Ochs shows us how to develop a personal theology by examining our life stories, learning to recognize God at work in them, and bringing them into conversation with Torah. Using timeless biblical texts as lenses to see the present, she helps us understand who we are and who God is for us by exploring the tightly interwoven basic elements of our lives--our love, suffering, work, bodies, prayer, community, and experiences of death.

Through the process of seeing our experiences in relation to Biblical stories, we begin to recognize our lives as part of the ongoing story of the Jewish people--as Torah. This insight allows us to see these experiences as meaningful, not accidental, and opens us to recognizing God's power in and through all that happens to us. Rather than a collection of random events, our lives are part of the Jewish people's ongoing adventure. Armed with our personally shaped theology, we can face this adventure of living in the vanguard of history with awareness and confidence.

A most intriguing book! What is it? A work of theology? Personal reflection and childhood memories? Biblical commentary? Psychotherapeutic exploration of the unconscious, epic stories of love and loss, a self-help guide, poetry of the soul, a book of healing? Suddenly the mind penetrates to the core of this work and grasps its inner meaning: it is all of the above and more. This is a poignantly beautiful work of theological understanding. ---Blu Greenberg, author of On Women and Judaism and How to Run a Traditional Jewish Household
