Book Description
Cooper Gillespie, an extremely intelligent and handsome Welsh springer spaniel, is a dog of discriminating taste and strong opinions. Now Cooper, with the assistance of cookbook author Sally Sampson and the transcription services of his favorite human, Susan Orlean, has put together 50 delectable recipes for snacks, meals, and treats for your canine companion.
Maybe you're cooking everything because your collie has colitis or your Akita has a wheat allergy or your older dog just isn't thriving on commercial kibble. Maybe you're mixing up the occasional biscuit or treat to help your best fur-bearing friend over that I-just-ate-a-tennis- ball-and-don't-feel-so-good episode. Whatever the reason, the recipes in this book (which have been approved by dog trainer and nutritional consultant Stacy Alldredge) will satisfy the most discerning doggie palate. Many of them, in fact, can be shared with a favorite human (though preferably not from the same dish).
Illustrated with more than 50 endearing black-and-white photographs of Cooper and friends by Cami Johnson, and liberally seasoned with stories, quotes, and nutrition tips, Throw Me a Bone makes a dog's dinner something to look forward to.

Lip Smacking and Tail Wagging!!.......2004-09-08
Of all the home made treats I have cooked up so far, the recipies from this book actually get my little doggy to do commands before being asked in the hopes of getting a tasty morsel. I packed a kong full of little bits and pieces from a couple different recipies and for the first time my little doggy made 'yummy' noises while he worked to get out the treasures. My doggy is very finicky, and has given two paws up for each batch made- I HIGHLY reccommend these recipies!!!
Beautiful Book.......2004-03-08
Cooper Gillespie, an adorable Springer Spaniel, is quite the food connoisseur. With a help from his owner, Sally Sampson, he's put together 50 recipes for dogs, his favorite dog related quotes, and photographs. The book was beautiful and well written, but its recipes are high in fat and are not nutritious to a dog. For a treat served scarcely, these recipes are divine to a dog's taste buds.
Great Pictures, but skip the recipes.......2003-12-28
Though I throughly enjoyed the photographs in the book and the writing style, and highly advise people to take control of their canine's (and feline's, for that matter) diet, I wasn't particularly enthused by the recipes in this book.
Often excessively high in fat, and regardless of the nutritionist involved in the recipes, these foods will improve your dogs mood, but not his overall health. The best diet for a dog is obtained through a balanced diet of phosphorus to calcium (protein to bone) comparable to what dogs would have eaten in the wild. Although certainly heads and tails above kibble (as is almost anything), I felt that this book didn't give enough information or research into the nutrition requirements of dogs.
To get the best information, and certianly if you're going to go to the trouble of preparing foods for your dog, then I suggest any of a plethora of books on the subject. "Give your dog a Bone" by Ian Billinghurst, or any of Billinghurst's books, Natural Nutrition for Cats and Dogs by Kymythy R. Schultze, or Raw Meaty Bones Promote Health by Tom Lonsdale. Any of these books will help you plan an effective road to health for your dog without catering to the coffeetable book set. (Although I still LOVED the pictures in this book)
Great recipes.......2003-12-11
I'm giving this dog cookbook the full 5 stars, even though I'm getting rather sick of books "written" by people's pets. The photographs are worth the price alone, but the recipes are fabulous and healthful. There's also a Table of Equivalents included in the back. There are also marvelous quotations sprinkled throughout of famous people's feelings about dogs.
I'm giving this book as a gift, too.
Perfect!!!.......2003-11-27
Between the recipes, photography, quotes and writing, this book is a perfect gift for anyone interested in dogs. I have tried a few recipes, mostly notably Goldies cupcakes and the tuna training treats, both of which my dog LOVED. Even if i never cook anything else (although i will), i love just looking at this book. It makes me laugh.
Book Description
Take it from the narrator of this book, an all-knowing big sister: when you're a baby you don't read books. You eat them. You don't know how old you are, or even if you're a boy or a girl. And you have to keep a special plug in your mouth to stop your scream from coming out. But one day, you won't be little anymore, and then you'll be taller and smarter, and actually quite clever. Like the narrator. And you'll be able to share memories of what it was like when you were little with your incredible Big Sister.

Big sisters will love this book.......2007-10-20
My two daughters adore this book! It makes them laugh. They have a new baby brother and this was a fun book to read in the months before the baby was born and well after he was born. It's fun to lord it over your cute baby brother and feel good about your accomplishments! They love the part about how big girls read books and babies eat them! And they love the part how babies have to sit in the car the wrong way facing backwards and how they get to sit the right way. It's nice to read a non preachy book about siblings and family life.
Fun Book.......2007-09-17
I bought this book for my 5-year-old granddaughter who has two little brothers and will be big sister to another baby soon. I know she'll be able to identify with the girl in the book. Reading this was fun for me too - some pages made me laugh out loud. It's exactly what a big sister would say and think, even about such things as messy diapers. I think this book will become a favorite for the child who receives it.
My five year old loves this book!.......2007-08-25
I have a 5 year old daughter and a 15 month old boy. He, of course, gets all of the attention.
We checked this book out from the library and after reading it I had to buy it! It is a MUST have for any older sister who has a baby in the house. It is a light-hearted look at what babies can and can't do compared to the much more mature older sister. Not only is it cute, its truth is downright funny and had us all laughing out loud!
Humorous and Fun!.......2007-07-25
This book is delightful! There is much to laugh at, much to love. I've shared it with my 3-year-old granddaughter, who will be a big sister come September. She was much intrigued by the great art work, and I could tell it helped enhance her self esteem, as well.
Fabulous!.......2007-07-20
My new favorite children's book! Such a fun, light-hearted look at being a big sister. My five year old daughter and I giggled out loud when we read this the first time from the library. The writing is right on level with a child's sense of humor, but fun for adults to read as well. This one I have to have for our permanent collection.
Book Description
When Sally Benson wrote "Meet Me In St. Louis" in 1941, Europe and Asia were embroiled in a war into which the United States of America would soon be drawn. Her delightful story took readers back to a simpler place and time: St. Louis and the Smith family on the eve of the 1904 World's Fair. The novel's appealing characters and nostalgic theme proved just what the country needed in uncertain times. Her screenplay of the same name would become one of the best-loved movies of its era.
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the historic World's Fair, St. Louis County Library proudly offers this reprinting of Sally Benson's classic novel. The narrative revolves around the Smiths and, in particular, three of the family's daughters: Rose, Esther, and 6-year-old Tootie, who is based on Sally herself. We invite you to visit the St. Louis of another era and enjoy this charming story once again.

"Right here in St. Louis.".......2004-08-18
MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS is the book that inspired both the beloved musical and movie by the same name. The book was originally published as a series of stories in NEW YORK MAGAZINE. The stories were collected and edited together and published as a book in 1941. It was a bestseller. This special edition of the book was published in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the St. Louis World's Fair.
The book is divided into 12 chapters, one for each month from June 1903 to May 1904. The chapters describe the quirky adventures that takes place in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Smith of St. Louis. The Smiths have five children: one son and four daughters. The children along with Mrs. Smiths' father, Grandpa Prophater, are involved in all sorts of mischievious delight, usually to the chagrin of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The book culminates in their experiences during the opening month of the World's Fair.
MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS is a delightful work of storytelling. The characters in the book reminded me of members of my own family and reading about them often caused me to chuckle as I reflected upon my own adventures of youth. The story is also a wonderful piece of history, describing events of the past in vivid details. It's hard to imagine after two world wars, countless other international missions, and the terrorism that threatens American life that the world was once a much safer and simpler place. MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS reminds us of that. And of course, being from the St. Louis area, it's nice to have a book that takes place and celebrates the area, "right here in St. Louis."

This Is Definitely For Everyone . . ........2001-09-30
I' have had the pleasure of hearing Ms. Sally Ogden speak, so when her book was released on the market I rushed out and bought a copy. It turns out that "Words Will Never Hurt Me" is both the funniest and most informative of books on childhood and general psychology to come out in years. Using a blend of heavy experience (over twenty years of firsthand teaching experience), humor, and...psychology, Ogden has created the ultimate guide to understanding the mentality those gawkish pre-teen and teenage years. Containing both insights and tips, "Words" is also bar none the most user-friendly book on psychology and teaching ever published. On top of all this, Ogden's words of wisdom apply not only to teaching and surviving in the years of adolescence, but to life and humankind in general. Ever wonder why your nextdoor neighbor is such a jerk? Sally Ogden may just be able to help.
So, I'll put this simply: Buy this book. Really. As a teacher's and parent's resource it is invaluable, but as a sort of window into the psyche of people in general it also excels.
Truly Enlightening..........2001-09-18
Obviously, Ogden utilizes her quick wit and vast knowledge of the human psyche to bring the reader into the realm of the elementary-to-middle-schooler's emotional state. It gives some terrific advice on helping your child handle situations that many of us at that age were intimidated by. Hopefully, this book becomes more circulated and popular on the Psychology bookshelves at the local bookstore, because it was definitely worth the read...

Obviously, Ogden utilizes her quick wit and vast knowledge of the human psyche to bring the reader into the realm of the elementary school child's emotional state. It gives some terrific advice on getting your child to become more confident about themselves while handling situations that many of us at that age were intimidated by. Truly helpful and insightful, I definitely recommend it, and hope to see it become more in circulation on the Psychology shelves...

Adoption Loss.......2007-09-09
As an adopted adult I found this book a very interesting read. My heart went out to the author who was an abandoned baby and had little or no chance of finding her birthparents. She later went on to relinquish a child herself whom she was later reunited with. I found it interesting that although she was adopted herself it didn't seem to give her much insight into her daughter's psyche. She came at the relationship very much from the angle of a bithmother. I felt it quite sad that she couldn't have tapped more into the invaluable resources that being adopted gave her to understand her daughter. I really enjoyed this book and is a valuable insight into the mind of a birthmother. It also shows that reunion is a very difficult and emotional process for all involved. People need to go into it with their eyes wide open and expect the unexpected, read as much as you can on the subject and gets lots of support.
Soul-stirring, Thought provoking, Eye opening.........2006-05-12
The author spent hundreds of hours and traveled many miles trying to uncover the secrets of her birth. Being slipped into a flimsy paper bag and deposited on the porch of a lonely farm house would make anyone wonder: Why? Why not in a nice basket, on the steps of a church, on a door step in the city? Or on the steps of an orphanage? Did the young woman who placed her on the porch and scurry away know whose porch she was leaving her baby on?
Sally's quest to find the answers took her to several states, into libraries, police stations, hospitals, churches, courthouses and into many homes interviewing people who were around at the time of her abandonment. She consulted psychics and others.
Sally's also writes poignantly and vividly of her search for the daughter she gave up for adoption, its ups and downs and twists and turns, that are typical of all too many adoption searches.
Read the book. Think about what it would be like to be abandoned in a paper bag, a ladies hatbox, the back seat of a car, under a stairwell, in a garbage can or a dumpster. Sadly, it happens all too often. And when it does, chances of the abandonded baby ever finding out who she or he is are practically nil.
Who wants to be identiied as being so callous, thoughtless or unfeeling? Accused of such unconscionable, and in many abandonment cases, criminal behavior? Hardly anyone, apparently. Very few abandoned babies are ever claimed by their families. They are left to wander through life ever searching, seeking, peering into unknown faces, looking for their own.
Touching and honest story.......2006-04-20
As an adoptee I know the hurt and pain that goes along with that but I have never seen it written about more honestly and clearly than in this book. It is a very touching story and a remarkable book. I cried and laughed and felt with Sally every step of the way. It is a great book and a great read and it will especially touch the heart of anyone involved in adoption in any way.I would recommend it to anyone and I have loaned out my book many times.
Finding Me in a Paper Bag.......2003-10-29
Of all the books I have read about adoption or from a birthmother's point of view, this is the most honest. As the mother searches for both her birthmother and her only daughter she gave up for adoption she lets the reader experience what she is going through. Searching for answers she shares her research with the reader. The 50's era are discussed, bonding verses attachment delved into. A grown up Safe Haven baby, she gives a voice to all those now being legally abandoned in hospitals, mostly with no questions asked.
Book Description
With a smiling face on the cover that wonderfully shows why God made babies, this book demonstrates to children that Jesus promises them a lifetime of love and care. He is with them from birth onward--in their family, friends, neighbors, and the natural world. The photos show children in such everyday activities as playing, praying, sharing meals, and so on. The photos also portray a broad array of multicultural images. Jesus is with children in all these ways and in all these people, and His every manifestation is a reason for rejoicing. Also, just as we forgive and comfort others, Jesus forgives and comforts us and stays with us as we grow. For all Christian denominations, children ages 0 to 5.
