Book Description
A unique introduction to an important American Artist. When Grandma Moses looks out her window, she sees a world of spotted cows,a world of thunderstorms, rain-drenched fields, and hand-washed laundry flapping in the wind. This stunning picture book introduces children of all ages to the work of legendary artist Grandma Moses. Beginning in the spring -- full of thunderstorms and scenes of laundry flapping in the wind -- Nikola-Lisa's lyrical text captures the seasons on a farm and highlights the simple yet wonderful moments depicted in Grandma Moses's folk art paintings. The experience is made all the more intimate by Grandma Moses's journal excerpts, which give readers a first-hand look at what inspired the artist. With its paintings and descriptions of hay rides in the fall, ice-skating in winter, and flower-gathering in the spring and summer, The Year with Grandma Moses celebrates an important American artist and shares her special world with others. When Grandma Moses (born Anna Mary Robertson) was in her seventies, her paintings were discovered by a New York art collector. By her 100th birthday, Grandma Moses had become one of the most well-known and beloved artists of her time. She died in 1961 at the age of 101.
Customer Reviews:
The artistic vision of Grandma Moses.......2001-03-27
Grandma Moses, who died at the age of 101 in 1961, was one of the most beloved folk artists in the United States. "The Year with Grandma Moses," by W. Nikola-Lisa, brings together 13 of her classic paintings, along with brief excerpts from the artist's own autobiographical writings. The result is a beautiful tribute to a remarkable artist.
The book opens with a great full-color photographic portrait of Grandma Moses at work at her painting table in 1952. A brief but informative biography sets the stage for the treasures that follow.
Grandma Moses was a rural New York farm wife for most of her long life, and her paintings reflect this world. Colorful, lively, and rich in detail, these paintings record and celebrate the daily lives of farm communities. We see classic farmhouses, a horse-drawn carriage, children climbing a tree, cows grazing, people engaging in chores, and other sights.
Because the book focuses on a year in Grandma's world, the paintings reflect all of the seasons. We see the green fields of springtime, the brilliant foliage of autumn, and the snowy landscapes of winter. "The Year with Grandma Moses" is a wonderful book that captures the spirit of an American creative legend.

Customer Reviews:
My Grandma's the Mayor.......2001-01-17
We often hear rhetoric about the importance of community spirit and kids are drilled with "it is better to give then receive". Through a touching story about Annie and her Grandma, the mayor, the author actually teaches kids the rewards of community involvement, but she acknowledges that it doesn't come without a cost. As Annie finds out, it can be tough to have your parent, or grandparent, heavily involved in the community. However, when there is a fire at an apartment house, Annie sees her Grandmother's commitment to helping her community through the crisis. Annie begins to understand the importance of her Grandmother's involvement, and she is filled with pride and is inspired to join in the effort to help. As with all of Marjorie White Pellegrino's books, the characters will move you, and teach you. This book should be in every elementary school library in the country.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful illustrations to go with John Denver's singing........2007-10-09
Beautiful book. I am a music teacher and my 4th graders LOVED it. Good for many ages.
Grandma's Feather Bed.......2007-10-01
Great Book....Illustrations were outstanding. I love John Denver's songs. Mr. Canyon is a fine artist and makes the song come alive in the book.
Another GREAT John Denver & Kids book!.......2007-09-19
We LOVE the other John Denver books illustrated by Christopher Canyon and could not wait for the arrival of Grandma's Featherbed. The first time I ever heard this song was on the Muppet Show, so I have visions of Muppets dancing in my head whenever I hear it. That made me wonder how the book would be in comparison to Muppets---how can you top that?
Well, it may not top my childhood memory of Muppets, but Christopher Canyon has made great new characters that come to life in this book! It is TERRIFIC!!! Lots of detail, LOVE the big eyes and facial expression---LOTS of FUN! The format, put together with John Denver's lyrics and CD, is fun---a great way to keep John Denver alive and share his music and love of nature and family with future generations. My 1 1/2-year old LOVES these books, too :) We always sing through it at least once and then go back through to point out & name all the animals, sun, trees, colors and other details. It's really FUN :)
Christopher, if you read this, thank you and keep up the good work---Maybe a future project, you can create a book for us that demonstrates John Denver's love for the Alaskan wilderness? That would be SOOOOOOOO cool!!!

Customer Reviews:
Well-meaning but impractical.......2007-03-24
I'm a mom who bought this book as a gift for my own mother to give her some ideas to stay connected with her grandchild.
The book had really nice intentions but some of the ideas were very impractical unless you're a particular kind of person - someone who likes to cook, is religious and lives in a cold weather country that still uses old technology in the same time zone as the grandchildren. My mom doesn't cook so that rules out at least 25-30% of the book for us right there. She doesn't collect bible scripture so that rules out another 10-15% of the book. And, she is not into crafts so that rules out a further 20%. She also lives in the tropics with a 5 hour time difference so there's no way we could practically coordinate web-cam story sessions or synchronised movie watching - lovely though those ideas are in principle.
Also, my generation have all moved on to I-Pods, so as nice as it would be to hear granny's voice reading a story book to my child - we wouldn't have a cassette player to play the tape on - particularly since they're no longer widely sold. To be fair Teitsort acknowledges this but suggests you buy the grandkids a cassette player. There's nothing that would annoy me more than to have to accumulate more stuff than is necessary in a small city space. Better for granny to learn how to use an I-Pod to record and digitally send the mpeg of the story by email or burn it on a CD. The same applies to video tapes of gran reading stories or documenting her legacy. Video tapes need to be stored. For the sake of your children - get a digital recorder so they can store your stories electronically.
Another thing that would annoy me, Teitsort repeatedly suggests sending mugs along with cocoa and chicken soup - which again is a nice idea but mom's cupboard is soon going to overflow with random mugs.
Still there are some good ideas if you perservere and wade through. I quite liked sending the grandkids a box of crayons and a colouring book in which you'd coloured in a picture. That could be especially fun if you live somewhere that has different kinds of stories to the ones where mom and grandchild live. She also has some heart-warming advice on dealing with blended families and making your step-grandchildren feel as cherished and valued as your biological ones.
Sending older kids a phone card is another good one - though you could always get on Skype over the internet and encourage them to call you for free.
Ultimately this book inspired my own original ideas. Like my dad has a gorgeous singing voice - so I may get him to record all the songs he used to sing to me. And, both parents live in different parts of the world so rather than getting them to track the seasons I'll ask them to tell their grandchild all about the world they live in. Ultimately it's all about sharing of yourself and getting to know your grandchild. I don't think you need this book to learn how to do this.
An excellent resource for connecting hearts across the span of miles, particularly in an increasingly mobile era.......2005-12-09
Long Distance Grandma: Staying Connected Across The Miles is a highly practical compendium of ideas written especially for grandparents and other family relatives seeking to stay in touch with faraway youngsters. Organized by themes pertaining to different months of the year, suggestions include plans for using the Internet and e-mail to stay connected, projects to send via snail mail, camera suggestions, recipes that are fun to make and ship easily, great craft ideas and much more. An excellent resource for connecting hearts across the span of miles, particularly in an increasingly mobile era.
Great Book!.......2004-03-31
This book is from a genuine heart! Janet Teitsort is an inspiration to grandparents who want to stay in touch with their grandchildren in a world that keeps families busy and pulled apart. Her ideas are tested and they work!
It may be good but..........2000-10-03
I bought this book as a gift for someone who is a long distance grandma and thought it would be useful. I chose it after considering this and others available through Amazon. However, when I received the book I was surprised to discover the author peppers her writings and suggestions with Biblical references throughout the book. This is not something I particularily like and would have preferred for the review to indicate this. I have since returned the book.
Keeping close to out of town grandchildren.......1999-06-27
Practical suggestions about being an everyday part of your grandchilds life even though they live too many miles away to visit frequently.
I especially like the idea about buying books to send to small grandchildren and recording them on a cassette before you mail it. As the young child looks at the book their Grandparents sent them they can play the cassette and listen to Grandma or Grandpa read the book to them. It is a special personal way to share a book with children many miles away. It helps grandparents become something more to little children than just a picture in a frame.
