5 out of 5 stars The road from home.......2007-05-28

This book is like an Armenian Ann Frank. You feel you know the family. It was very well written.

3 out of 5 stars So far...so good .......2007-01-31

I am reading this book as a student in literature class. We as a class have only read up through chapter 5. So far it is a good book. However I would not recommend this book to anybody who is very sensitive, beacuse this is a very sad,and true story. There are some parts that are boring so you have to be paient with the book. This book is very popular amongst my class. So if you are interested in true stories i would recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars The Road from Home by Deahna S........2006-12-13

I really enjoyed The Road From Home. It was an interesting biography about an Armenian girl named Veron Dumehjian. She tells us of her life during the early 1900's when the Turkish government attempted to rid Turkey of its Armenian population. She and her family are torn from their quiet, wealthy lifestyle in Azizya. They are forced to march without being told where they are going. This is a beautiful story of Veron's strength and will to be alive.
As I was reading this book, I felt the intensity of Veron's emotions. She struggles to hold onto sanity as "the great dome of Heaven cracked and shattered" over her life. In some ways I can relate to Veron in the way that she cares for her family more than herself.
David Kherdian, the author, really does use an abstract way to describe the emotions of the characters. An example of this when he wrote, "Slowly, our lives fell into a pattern as we began to live with our sorrows and make a new life," to describe when Veron was getting used to her life after her parents and siblings had died. He uses descriptive words and has a clear plot line. There were very few moments during this book when I felt confused.
Over all, The Road from Home was a sad, but enjoyable book. It was sad because of the things that Veron must go through. It was enjoyable because of how well written and unique it is. This book really does show how someone's life can change in the blink of an eye.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book in the most simple words.......2006-09-20

This is by far one of the best books that I have read about the Armenian Genocide, in the most simple words possible. The book captures the reader's attention by its moving and true story of a young woman who came from a distinguished Armenian family in Turkey and became a victim of the first genocide of the century. It shows the courage of this young woman and the will power of most Armenians in staying alive and surviving the most brutal acts of the Turks against the Armenians. It is a story that every child & adult, Armenian or none, should read. It gives the reader a true perspective of how the Turks committed the act of slaughtering and killing the Armenians and the Greek, while also sharing some of the Armenian history and its cultural practices. I suspect that Veron Kherdian is still alive, but if she is, I'd love to visit her and thank her for her courage, her lessons that she taught me in her book, and most of all the message that she gave in her book: "Never give up hope in a better and sunny day, yet to come" and for me as an Armenian her most important message was to never give up my race and my history as an Armenian and to teach our future generations the truth about our history and our ancestors.

5 out of 5 stars So Far From Home.......2006-08-15

Mary Driscol, or "Quiet One" as her sentimental aunt calls her, lives in a land of tragedy and gloom, starvtion and fear. Ireland, 1847. Not only the potatoe famine afflicts the Irish people: They are persecuted by unreasonable Eglish land lords who ought to be helping them in their time of need. Desperate to start a new life for her family, Mary ventures to America, where she hopes to earn money to pay for her parents' voyage by working in a mill in Massechusetts. She gets a job, stays with her aunt, who is a school teacher, and makes a friend named Annie, who is an American girl. But her struggles are not over. She has an overbearing boss, a prejudiced co-worker, and the hardships of daily life to contend with. But she finds contentment in making the most of her blessings, in prayer, in singing her mother's old lullabye to herself, and in the hopes that, one day, she will be re-united with her family. A touching, poignant story of a brave Irish girl who made her little world a better place. I highly reccomend.

5 out of 5 stars Going to America.......2006-05-22

So Far From Home is about a girl (Mary) who moves from Ireland to America to live with her aunt and to work at a mill. On the ship when she is traveling to America, she meets the O'Donalds and a boy named Sean. The O' Donalds have a daughter already in America (her name is Alice). While on the ship the O' Donald's end up dying from black fever. So Mary decides to go find Alice. When she finds Alice, Sean's uncle decides to take her in. After a while Mr. Quinn (Sean's uncle) sends Alice to a convent. There was a group of people who didn't like the Irish so they started a mob. Sean goes to the convent to keep Alice out of danger and brings her to his uncle. Then he goes back to the convent to stop the mob. He ends up getting arrested and Mary goes on a quest to save him.
I really liked this book because it is emotional and easy to read. I say it's emotional because when she is on the ship the O'Donalds die. Also Later in the book when she is with her aunt, she finds out that her parents are dying and won't be able to come to America. Like I said this book is easy to read I read it in two hours. As you can see I really liked So Far From Home and I think you would, too.

3 out of 5 stars Not Best Dear America Book.......2005-08-25

I must say, when I read So Far From Home, I was a little disappointed. It was surely not as good as other Dear America books, and not very good period. I felt the story line was far too rushed, and could have been longer, it also ended too abruptly. The epilogues was weird too, and not as complete as other epilogues in the series. The characters I felt were not relatable as other Dear America characters. Overall, the book was alright, but surely not my favorite in the series.

Book Description

NORA—An Ordinary Girl from Inchicore is a poignant memoir of growing up in Inchicore, Dublin in the 1940's and 50's. With humor and pathos Nora tells of the day-to-day drama in a large Catholic family and the interaction with her nine siblings. She tells of the discipline in an all-girl Catholic school and the kindness and sometimes cruelty of the good nuns.

Nora takes us with her through the streets of her beloved Dublin as she cycles to work or takes the bus into town. We absorb the unique atmosphere—the sights, the smells and the colorful speech of Dubliners.

We go dancing with her in “The Golden Years” of ballroom dancing and follow her romance with a handsome student from Trinity College.

We hear of the adoption of a baby and the circumstances that led her to immigrate to Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Later we join Nora in England where her plans to marry her student prince go awry.

We follow her to Toronto, Canada where she meets and falls in love with her life partner, Frank.

NORA—An Ordinary Girl from Inchicore will delight those who love all things Irish and who believe the Irish are the most fascinating people on earth.

4 out of 5 stars The Spunk of the Irish.......2007-05-12

Nora's story is the perfect story for those of us who think we have problems and for those of us who know we do. Either way, it takes us out of ourselves and lets us see that their are problems worse than ours and that there are people who handle them with her spunk and bravery. It's all about attitude and Nora's story shows how far the right attitude can take you. I hope she has more stories in her as I'd like to read them. Thanks Nora, for sharing your story with us.

I thoroughly enjoyed Nora's book. It brought me to that time and place where a family with ten children struggles to keep going. Young Nora has spunk, determination and a desire to succeed. I could hardly put the book down. Enjoyable, easy reading!

5 out of 5 stars Poignant memoir.......2006-09-26

This poignant memoir written in such astonishing detail is an unforgettable story that will capture the reader from the start. Sano is like a small but sturdy flower growing in the most unlikely and least advantageous of garden spots. In her we see goodness and love survive heart rending loss and the cruel displacement of senseless war. I could not put the book down once I began to read it.

5 out of 5 stars A tragic story written beautifully.......2006-05-28

This is not a book to read if you want to be cheered up, yet I will never forget the story. I wept off and on reading of the author's mother's experience on the death march. I have traveled to Greece and Turkey twice yet had no knowledge of the genocide of the Pontic Greeks. I thank the author for the courage to live through her mother's amazing journey as she told her unforgettable story.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book Thea!.......2005-10-22

I am also of Pontic Greek and Assyrian origin. Even though our lands were taken away, our people still exist, we still maintain our language, and the gospel is still spreading which is a blessing. I am glad to see someone wrote a book on the Greek/Assyrian/Armenian Genocide. The Turks tortured and massacred millions of Greeks, Assyrians and Armenians. I am happy to see you raise more public awareness about this. I pray for the Greeks, Assyrians and Armenians still living in Asia Minor that deal with constant persecution for their Christian faith. Great Book Thea!

5 out of 5 stars A Message of Appreciation From John Halo.......2005-10-22

I am John Halo the brother of Thea Halo. I am very proud of my sister for writing such a wonderful book, NOT EVEN MY NAME, that depicts such an accurate account of my mothers life, that discribeds the pain that my wonderful mother endured in her childhood and throughout her life. Thea Halo is a champion and a woman with a beautiful hart and a loving sole that deserves the recognition of a grate author, and I hope someone will relize the value of this true story and make a movie and documentary so to educate our generation and future generation from repeating this horror. I would also like to let everyone know that my mother was so grateful and proud that Thea wrote this book and is also grateful to all of the wonderful people that came to see her speak. And last I would like to say how proud and thankful I am of my sister Thea Halo for being my sister.
Sincerely
John Halo

The subject is of great interest and great importance to the present situation in the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. It is well written and quite engaging. As it is a book I want to keep permanently in my library, I only wish it were printed on higher quality paper.

Written in diary for this book explains the life of an Irish immigrant. I do not usually read this style of book but I must say it is quite an interesting read. It has allot of facts and would be sure help on a report. It is a short book and a refreshing change from other fats moving, action packed, and depressing books of today. (even though i do enjoy those types of books best) it is on the childish side though i suppose many older women will enjoy them. If you are just looking for a rainy-day book I guess i suggest it. For kids it is a four star for adults it is a three star.

I have become a Harvey Girl re-enactor with the El Paso Railroad Museum since January 2006, giving presentations & doing research. FAR FROM HOME is the main resource for Harvey Girl uniforms. Our number of re-enactors is increasing, so we now have begun monthly meetings to discuss scripts for presentations, costumes for the span of time periods that the Harvey Girls existed, along with participation in historical events with other groups covering a similar time period. In addition, we are collecting & exhibiting Fred Harvey dinnerware & Santa Fe Railway dinnerware & preparing/serving food samples from the HARVEY HOUSE COOKBOOK. Since I am a retired school teacher as of May 2005 & a nutritionist, this is a perfect retirement activity for me. Thank you Lesley for all that you have published on the Harvey Girls ! !

I've been collecting paper dolls for years, and this is one of the best books I've found. There are 6 dolls (4 women and 2 men) with a nice variety of costumes. The clothes are beautifully drawn and obviously well-researched (but kind of tricky to cut out). As an easterner, I know almost nothing about western history, and the diary entries that tell the stories of two sisters who become Harvey Girls are very interesting and definitely made me want to learn more about them.

      Book Description

In this warmly witty account, Joel Vance re-creates what it was like for a city kid to have his life changed almost entirely when he is transplanted from his Chicago birthplace to his father's home country in rural Missouri. He shares his emotions, his dreams, and the realities of his high school days, capturing the essence of the experiences of many who lived in the Midwest at mid-century.
