The success of Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye's fast-paced apocalyptic Left Behind thrillers is built on a straightforward Christian message and a blend of dialogue and action; the 10th installment of the series, The Remnant: On the Brink of Armageddon, sticks to the same proven formula that has captivated legions of fans. It's one month into the Great Tribulation, and a million people gather in the ancient city of Petra to await the foretold "Glorious Appearing." The Global Community loses no time in bombing the city, which is completely engulfed in flames, guaranteeing certain doom for those assembled unless a miracle occurs. In other parts of the world, martyrdom continues for the remnant of believers as Global Community potentate Nicolae Carpathia's thirst for blood escalates. There are lots of slick escapes, plenty of intrigue, some genuinely gory moments, and enough gruesome plagues straight out of the biblical Book of Revelation to keep readers turning the pages. When the Chicago believers are forced to scatter and discord breaks out among those gathered at Petra, changes accelerate for the Tribulation Force and other series characters, leaving an ample number of loose ends to be picked up in the next episode. --Cindy Crosby

4 out of 5 stars Christian Fiction.......2007-10-20

Another one of those Christian Fictions that bespeaks doom and destruction for all who don't turn their lives over to Jesus. If you can get past the religious psychobabble, its a good book. Otherwise, Buddha is a much better choice and his followers are typically less intolerant and war-like.

5 out of 5 stars Just one more book in the all-encompassing, enthralling, and utterly absorbing Left Behind Series.......2007-09-14

From the very first letter of the alphabet that my eyes looked upon inside this series of books, until the very last period of the very last sentence, I was hooked. Each one of these books absorbed my attention like no other book has ever done in my life. Biblically sound, theatrically entertaining, and brilliantly written, the Left Behind books will inspire you to dig into God's word and take the pieces of news from your T.V. screen and match them right smack-dab up with the prophecies of the Bible. Your hair will stand up, your heart will race, and you will find yourself helplessly caught in the suspense. Once you finish one of these books, you will desperately race to your computer screen or your local library to pick up the next one!

This is #10 in the series, so make sure you read the first 9. If you try to read this without the other 9 you will be lost.
This book in itself is a great story of a group of friends trying to make it to the return of Jesus Christ to the world. I am not going to give away the story, read the series. It's a real awakening.

Book Description

As the bloodied and weary galaxy faces battle once more, the Jedi take on the formidable task of bringing the last of the Empire into the light. . . .

From the ashes of the New Republic—torn to shreds by the savage Yuuzhan Vong forces—the newly formed Galactic Alliance has risen, determined to bring peace to the entire galaxy. But first the Yuuzhan Vong must be contained once and for all. And so Luke Skywalker seeks a world long lost to legend: Zonama Sekot, a sentient planet believed to have repelled an invasion by the Yuuzhan Vong decades ago. Deciphering the enigmatic secrets of Zonama Sekot just might turn the tides of a relentless war.

Aboard the Jade Shadow, Luke, his wife Mara, Jacen Solo, and other Jedi head off into the Unknown Regions, where rumors and clues suggest Zonama Sekot might be found. Yet the mission has barely begun when the searchers stumble into a horrific battle. The Imperial Remnant, in retreat from the mighty Yuuzhan Vong, is about to be destroyed. It would seem those aboard the Jade Shadow have little choice but to leave the Empire to its fate. But these are no ordinary space travelers, they are Jedi. . . .

3 out of 5 stars the lowest rating ive given one yet book 15.......2006-10-13

ok,first of all,im still po/d that the most dangerous sith ever was introduced 3 books ago and still hasnt been used by book 15.so i guess either the new writers have no respect for the previous books in the series or for some reason they chose not to use a god-like sith .this goes back to my points from before.everybody loved anakan solo and chewbacca.both get offed.and both of the solo twins went down the dark side earlier but the dark side was gone by the next book.not worked out just simply dismisssed.thats why i gave this book a lower rating than the previous 14 books in the series.the republic and empire are working together in this one.but theres a ton of poliyical bs they have to bore the reader with 1st to get to that point.jacin solo and a much older danni start a romance.the vong are out being vongs and blowing up planets and sacrificing prisoners.tahiri is still very much depressed over anakan solo even to the point of having schizophrennic-like episodes.nom anor is realizing some mind blowing truths about the vongs spiriyual beliefs the hard way.a lot of interesting stuff happens with him in this book.there is a search going out for a living planet.a new characheter is introduced.hes chewbaccas son, lumpawarrump.not that that makes them killing chewbacca in book 1 ok.an air battle pitting the republic and empire vs the vong goes down along with 3 battles for planets.the vongs lowest caste "the shamed ones" began questioning the truths about the vong gods, threatening to destroy thier most fundamental beliefs.so the vong began slaughtering them.thats about it.of course.I LEFT YOU MANY SUPRISES.anyhow, this book is really hust a jumbled mess.its somewhat interesting but not all that exiting.its a 400 plus page story that couldve been told in 250.and its slow to read,as was book 14.i hope this isnt a trend developing.with only 4 books left, somebody better start picking up the slack or i will be very disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars A new front for the war against the Yuuzhan Vong.......2005-11-29

I really enjoyed this book. Sure, there is some review in the beginning of the book, but not as much as some reviewers would have you think. There is plenty of new material as the main protoganists go off in two different directions on two very different missions, but both designed to ensure the survival of the newly formed Galactic Alliance.

Leia is leading one expedition to reconnect severed links to the Galactic Alliance. They will find surprises on the way. The suspense is evident in several instances through the first stage of this mission and a familar enemy along with a stange alien will make their presence felt.

On the other side of the (not the MLS champion L.A.) Galaxy, Luke is leading another expedition to the Unknown Regions with a stop at the Imperial Remnant. Surprise, surprise, they too will meet with a familar enemy. Political intrigue and a very Latin Americanesque approach by the Grand Admiral typify the reaction of the Empire to the unwanted visitors.

Along the way, we see the continued struggles of Tahiri as well as the development of the young Jedi. There is some repetition of information worked into the story in the form of informing new protoganists of what is happening. However, if you haven't read previous books, you will really miss out on much of the storyline.

3 out of 5 stars sort of dull, but still entertaining.......2005-09-03

this is the first adult star wars book i have read. it took halfway through the book just to get to the first lightsaber duel, which wasn't really a duel at all! had good cover art, though.
there were good things about this book and bad things. entertaining, but if you want a better read, i recommend destiny's way.

3 out of 5 stars Eh...it was all right.......2004-12-17

What was going on in this book? Some character development and then none at all. Complete luck that Luke's party stumbled onto the Battle of Bastion. This whole book was very up and down. First 60 pages it took me three months. Then I started to ease my way through it. It was a rough read. Definitely could have been better. And it's way to long for so much nothing. It was very average and my lord what do the Ryn have to do with anything? Plus these two authors need to quit it with calling Han and Leia "Anakin's Parents" nonstop. Plus this whole thing with Tahiri is quite annoying. And don't Han and Leia and the military Twin Suns Squadron have more important things to do than go to small insignificant planets and stop them from falling to the Vong? Shouldn't they be fighting the true war? What is going on? The next two better explain what's going on...

2 out of 5 stars Pretty bad... 1.5/5 stars........2004-07-24

Of all the New Jedi Order books I've read, I must say this is by far the worst.

Where to begin? Well, the plot itself isn't really that bad - Luke and company go to find Zenoma Sekot, while Leia, Han and the others go to round up support for the Galactic Alliance - as I said, not bad. Even this has problems though. Based on the occurences in the novel, the Yuuzhan Vong are obviously expending a fair amount of resources to defeat possible attackers on their borders - and what is the Alliance doing while this is going on? Nothing. No offense, but after scoring a huge victory in Destiny's Way, the Alliance appears to be back to the New Republic's way of sitting there and doing nothing until they are attacked. The logistics just didn't make sense to me, and it wouldn't have been that difficult to include a new section devoted to say Wedge or Cal Omas or even Admiral Ackbar.

As the plot is really the work of LucasArts though, and not of the writers themselves, any failings in the overall story department can be forgiven. What really made the book dissapointing for me was the writing style of the authors.

In my opinion writing teams rarely work, as authors simply have different views, goals, opinions and thoughts - combining the work of two authors into a single book (or set of books) is a bad idea, in my mind. This is just the start of the problems however.

Firstly, there were no chapters in the book. I can't understand the purpose of this besides forcing the reader to see the "Part" that they are currently reading as a single collection of actions and thoughts - which they really weren't. The lack of spacing between the four sections (not to mention a long prologue and longer epilogue) was offsetting to me, and I missed the deliberate pacing of chapters that all the other New Jedi Order books have. Heck, most books have them. As I said, unless it was some failed attempt at novel artistry, there was no point to it, and just aggravated me.

Secondly, the book went far too much in spurts and stops. Almost useless portions of the plot would be given huge amounts of space, while the conclusions to battles and character depth were rushed, barely mentioned, or forgotten altogether. While I did enjoy the burgeoning love relationships between Jag and Jaina and Jacen and Danni (though I still believe Jacen and Tenel Ka should be together), nothing else really seemed all that well done to me, almost as though the writers were looking to find a niche in the story where their talents could shine.

Thirdly, I found it nearly impossible to follow the flow of the writers words. A paragraph of character thought, for example, would follow normally through a pattern of logic, then suddenly, the character would arrive at a totally different conclusion than I would have ever thought of, or what I thought Williams and Dix were leading me towards. It felt as though the two writers were either confused in the writing of the book, or still attempting to discover their characters and those characters' place in the novel. A prime example (on a larger scale) is with Saba, who, from the prologue, I thought was going to be a main character throughout, but eventually only showed up in any importance at the very end, once again, like the writers just weren't sure what they wanted to do with the characters. For such an important area of the arc plot (ie. finding Zenoma Sekot and possibly dooming the Yuuzhan Vong), it was dissapointing to see the writers meander their way through.

Lastly, the imprecise battle tactics. I had absolutely NO understanding of what was going on during the space battles. None whatsoever. It was really quite sad that the only description of the battles was "The Empire was winning," or "they were on their heels" (those aren't real quotes obviously). It really hurt the book on the whole, as it was practically a nail in the coffin.

I have several other points which also bothered me, but there is a word limit to this review and there's no real point in going on, as anyone reading this will get my point. I didn't enjoy the book at all. I'm almost certainly going to skip over the next two novels as well and pick up with The Final Prophecy, in the hopes of some restoration of the series before Dix and Williams completely destroy it. No offense intended.

Book Description

The cowboy and his environment are among the most evocative, enigmatic, and surprisingly romantic icons of the American experience. Though considered an anachronistic occupation, the cowboy survives, and contemporary cowboy life is masterfully revealed in this new book of large-format duotone photographs. The apparent isolation of life on the range is balanced by the pride the cowboys exude in their work, and in the tightly bound communities in which they live and operate.

Gathering Remnants presents a world ruled by tradition and a strong ingrained work ethic, which fires our imagination and connects us to our own primal needs for rugged individualism. What makes this book unique is the photographer's ability to capture the authenticity and solidarity of the cowboy's world--vast, flat rangeland that is striking in its subtle beauty.

"Gathering Remnants is a sumptuous book, unabashedly romantic: cowboy as archetype. A spiritual tome, a prayer to a way of life we need to believe in as we stumble through our own, over-scheduled lives."—Teresa Jordan, author of Riding the White Horse Home: A Western Family Album

Contemporary cowboy life is masterfully revealed in this new book of large-format duotone photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-09-04

Kendall Nelson captures her subject well. I saw her photos on display at my friend's house and she showed me the book. I couldn't afford the photos, but the book was right in my range. Book is great. Photos are wonderful. I especially enjoy the photo of the cowgirl and her dog.

5 out of 5 stars Shooting cowboys and buckaroos on the open range.......2003-07-02

Here's another book of fine photography devoted to cowboys and buckaroos, this time put together by three women. It's a big oversize book, with 48 black and white plates by California photographer Kendall Nelson. The rather worshipful and romantic text is by German-born writer Felicitas Funke-Riehle. Gretel Ehrlich has provided an introduction about the lonely, hard work of a cowboy, written in her own meticulous eye-for-detail style. (Clint Eastwood has a brief 5-sentence foreword.)

The photos were taken 1996-1999 on several ranches in Nevada, with some additional shots taken in Texas, Wyoming, and Idaho. Most of them are of individual cowboys, many with their horses. Typically they are captured against a sweeping terrain under a big sky with scattered clouds. A buckaroo gathers sage brush for a branding fire. Another sits in the open flap of a teepee tent bent over a silver bit he's repairing, Four vaqueros sit in the shade against a wall, smoking cigarettes, the oldest of them watching the photographer.

Cowboys move cattle through sage brush, raising clouds of dust. A cowboss stands with his wife and son against the plank walls of a shed, their three border collies gathered at their feet. A man leans, head down against a fence, snow collecting on the brim of his hat. The photographs capture the relentless, hard work of these men and something of their solitude. Even as they wait for their horses (see cover photograph) they stand separately, keeping a distance between them. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in cowboys, cattle ranching, Western life, and thoughtful photography. For vintage photographs of cowboys, I suggest also Richard Collins' "The American Cowboy."

5 out of 5 stars Classic cowboy photos.......2001-04-19

Timeless black and white photography of a timeless subject, Cowboys of the American West. Well done with an obvious emotional connection to her work. A must for everyone's home and heart!

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful tribute to the American west - you'll love it!.......2001-04-06

If you have any interest in cowboys or the American west, you'll love this book. The stunning photographs and elegent text tell the story of a simple, rugged lifestyle that is, sadly, disappearing all too quickly from our national landscape.

You'll want to keep this one handy to look at again and again. And it makes a great gift!

5 out of 5 stars A tribute to the working cowboy - for sure.......2001-02-01

The coffee table book does an extraordinary job of documenting contemporary cowboys. The book is a must for all to see.

4 out of 5 stars A book for a young teen..........2007-02-07

I bought this for my son...and it was impossible to find at a local retailer. My son enjoyed it, but said that it was a bit depressing.
Part of an excellent series, apparently.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Continuation.......2002-12-01

After reading the first Remnant book, I didn't think there would be any better books. I was definitely wrong. This book introduced most of the Wakers of the Mayflower. The ones who survived. The first species of Aliens were discovered. There was a lot of action. After reading this, I couldn't wait to see what happened in the next book.

5 out of 5 stars The Awakening.......2002-08-12

In the first book, we left off where the Eighty humans chosen to survive an asteroid (nicknamed The Rock)when it made impact started to hibernate, and we pick up 500 years later, and they are on this strange new "planet". Most of the Eighty are dead, and there are not many essential supplies on board the ship, then on top of that, these aliens are after the Eighty.(which is more like The Twenty) Will the human race become a thing of the past?

5 out of 5 stars Great 2nd book to the Remnants series.......2002-06-19

When the world ended, "The Mayflower Project" gave eighty people the chance for survival. Shot blindly into space the eighty Remnants of the human race have now landed 500 years after the end of the world. Jobs, 2Face, Mo'Steel, Yago, and some others have survived, but many weren't so lucky. Tamara, the pregnant marine sergant, has given birth to a baby mutant. Billy, the kid who stayed awake for all 500 years of their journey is in a coma and insane. Emotions are on high and the remaning people still have no clue where they've landed on. All they know is that the conflicting landscapes can't be true. Can they survive on this strange, new world all alone? This was my favorite Remnants book out of the seven I have read so far. Kept you guessing what was gonna happen next all the time. Some parts were kinda gross but that was just how the author imagined the planet to be. Can't wait to read further installments of Remnants!

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!.......2002-05-15

The Remnants wake up from their hibernation, and find out they've taken a 500 year "nap". More than half the Remnants are dead. They are on a bizzare planet, where nothing is realistic. There are strange aliens, nicknamed "Riders", who seem to want nothing but to ...[destroy] the Remnants. And pretty soon they find out they are not on a planet, but a ship...

5 out of 5 stars Remnants #3.......2006-05-31

Well I really enjoyed the book! I especially liked the plot line. It was really liked the part when they were exploring the new land. I thought that was just great. The way that they looked around, and almost got killed was really funny. But I thought that it was a little odd the way the author wrote about the simplicity of the Adventure. They were exploring like the native Americans did, and the settlers along with that. I didn't think that she used her imagination. Other than that I thought that the book was great. Some people died, and it w2as magnificent! I gave this book the good star rating because it was a riveting part of the ongoing saga of the Mayflower Project! A wonderful addition to the already amazing series of books!

3 out of 5 stars Remanents Reiveiw .......2005-09-28

This book is the third book in this three book series. The book starts on an alien spaceship that has abducted the Mayflower project ship and has created an artificial environment of what it knows about the humans. Yoga the leader of what is left of the humans leads the remaining humans to this tower where they encounter riders (aliens trying to kill them) and demons and other terrors. But also at the tower they encounter an alien friend a Blue Meanie who helps them try to destroy the Node (the brain that's creating the demons that are trying to kill them) to end this nightmare of a world.

Some of my likes of this book are that its kind creepy in some parts of this book which I kind of like. Also there is some suspense so that you just want to keep reading and not stop. Some dislikes are that the riders use these stupid hover boards to glide around on. Also some of my other dislikes are that there is this baby that Tamera caries that has some super powers which I thought was stupid.

I would recommend this book to someone who kind of likes the creepy kind of book with suspense in it and who kind of likes a weird twist in there books.

5 out of 5 stars The Separation.......2002-08-12

Where we left off, everyone was split up. Now we switch back in forth during each chapter to be updated on what each group is doing. In one group, a boy Yago who was the president's son is trying to take charge spliting everyone up into groups: ormal and freak. And he picks on 2Face, a girl who was the victim of a fire, and Edward, a boy who was mutated and is like a Chameleon, changing with its backround. The other group is about to be killed by a painting (!) after learning important information about the "planet" they're on. How is the human race supposed to live on, or was this meant to be the end? I couldn't put this book down, I don't know about you, because some people like my friend don't have the stomach for this series. But the few of us who do should enjoy K.A.'s work.

4 out of 5 stars What lies in the Tower?.......2002-04-23

Babel, the Tower of Babel. That's what the 2 groups of Remnant's
see on the Horizon.

Yago and Wylson think it would make a perfect battle station,to conqeur the Riders and the Blue Meanies, and eventually conqeur whatever put them in the ship, maybe even conquer Mother...

While Jobs,2FAce,Mo'steel,and the rest of their small group are just trying to stay alive...

Yago's group learns about Tamara and her Baby's power to eliminate the Blue MAenies and the Riders. She agrees to help again under one condition,Her Baby is getting hungry and it wants meat, human meat......

In Jobs group, they have stumvled into a living paitning,it's called "Last Judgement",it's one man's version of hell.they also have been comunicating to a Blue Meanie through Billy who is still unconcious...

I can't recomend this series enough!it maybe confusing and at times scary but there is just the right amount of scariness, and drama, and comedy, and much more!

Although the part of this book with "the LAst Judgement",was terribly frightening,I still recomend this book!

I also recomend the author's other series Animorphs, and Everworld...

Hope this Helped you!

5 out of 5 stars I guess so.......2002-03-30

To me, it deserves 5 stars, but to some other readers it may be just horribly horrible. The plot is extremely confusing and the reader may just stop wanting to read the book once they're into the first chapter. However, to those who find it interesting, they may want to keep reading because of all the unexpectble things that always seem to happen to the people who are the last members of the human race. All I want to know is what will become of those people, and how Applegate will conclude the series.

Book Description

"His idyllic place into the sea like a sandcastle with the tide coming in? Would the Rock hit far across the planet and break the world apart? There'll be so much left to do. So much to say. but what do you say at the end of the world?"There's a reason for the strange environment of the world the Remnants have landed on. It's not a real world at all. It's a ship and the ship's landscape is computer generated. Technically enhanced. And when the group finds a power node, a green-glowing cone that's cracing with electricity, they realize that they too can be in control of their bizarre surroundings.

Now that the Remnants have destroyed the Node, they are in the land of the Riders, back how Mother was before the Mayflower. They're in a land of copper-colored seas, small marsh-like islands,Large pinkish "Blimps",and Riders......well,atleast the 2 groups are back together, sort of......Yago is trying to separate the normal people from the freaks, like 2Face,Billy,and Edward. He craves power,he needs a way to get it,but how?The Group of Remnants struggle to survive,as Mother tries to kill them...........

5 out of 5 stars The last of us..........2002-03-16

500 years from home and the last of us, the Remnants have finally found out their true environment they landed on before Mother changed everything for them. This new environment might be even more dangerous than the last...a land full of pink blubbery blimps, riders, and slimy sucker that look like eels. It is an ocean environment with many surprises. The Remnants must bind together to defeat their environment. But right now the environment is winning and the Remnants aren't exactly working together. There are the so called mutants: 2Face, Edward, Billy Weir, and Tamara's baby, Then there is their leader Wylson( however even that isn't set. The presidents son Yago wants nothing more than to be in charge of things.) Emotions are all on high and this small group of humans, the last of our kind, are falling apart. There are inner battles...the one most dangerous between the mutant baby and Billy Weir. There is something about Billy that makes the baby on edge. Then there is the battle for power between Yago and Wylson. All and all the Remnats will have to work together to their best of ability to defeat the environment not meant for them.

4 out of 5 stars Remnants books 1-4.......2002-03-15

The author, K.A. Applegate, has written the Animorphs series, but most people don't know that she has started a Remnants series as well. The story begins with Jobs, Mo Steel, and Two Face. They're kids that all live normal lives on earth in the year 2011. It is discovered that an asteroid seventeen miles long is on a collision course with Earth. Impact is only a few days away. Eighty people, including Jobs, Mo Steel, and Two Face, are strapped into an unprepared space shuttle with experimental hibernation berths. Mankind's only hope for the survival of their species is launched into space in hopes of landing on a suitable planet.

After five-hundred years, some people wake up, while others died in hibernation. The survivors, including Jobs, Mo Steel, and Two Face, are in a very strange land. Some people are deformed and act very strangely. These survivors struggle to survive in this world that looks like a very odd painting. They encounter Blue Meanies, Riders, and giant blimp-like creatures filled with laughing gas. Will the homosapien species survive?

I have read up through the fourth book, and am waiting for the fifth to be published. I love the odd things in these books that no average mind could come up with. There are some very weird happenings. Deformaties turn human against human even though, more importantly, alien creatures are out to kill them all. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes a good fiction novel. These books keep you wondering what is going to happen next.

    Book Description

This book reviews both the historical observations of supernovae (SN) seen in our Galaxy over the last two millennia and recorded in East Asia (China, Japan and Korea), Europe and the Arabic dominions, together with modern observations of the remnants of these supernovae. Introductory chapters provide background information about the historical observations and our modern understanding of supernovae and novae, and of supernova remnants (SNRs) and pulsars. Subsequent chapters discuss the historical observations of the well defined historical SN and modern observations of their remnants. These chapters cover Kepler's SN of AD1604, Tycho's SNe of AD1572, the SN of AD1181, the SN of AD1054 which produced the well known Crab Nebula, and the especially bright SN of AD1006. One chapter discusses the young SNR Cassiopeia A, and the proposed sighting of its SN in AD1680 by Flamsteed. Earlier but less certain supernovae of the preceding millennium chronicled in China are also discussed, along with their possible remnants. Other less certain observations of historical SN, and the future potential for additional historical observations, are briefly discussed. This book also includes as an appendix an up-to-date catalogue of over two hundred known Galactic SNRs.

    Book Description

In this book the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben looks closely at the literature of the survivors of Auschwitz, probing the philosophical and ethical questions raised by their testimony.

"In its form, this book is a kind of perpetual commentary on testimony. It did not seem possible to proceed otherwise. At a certain point, it became clear that testimony contained at its core an essential lacuna; in other words, the survivors bore witness to something it is impossible to bear witness to. As a consequence, commenting on survivors' testimony necessarily meant interrogating this lacuna or, more precisely, attempting to listen to it. Listening to something absent did not prove fruitless work for this author. Above all, it made it necessary to clear away almost all the doctrines that, since Auschwitz, have been advanced in the name of ethics."
    -- Giorgio Agamben

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars lost-lacanian truly lost.......2006-02-04

Having read Lost-Lacanian's review of Agamben's 'Remnants' and then read the book, I must say that Agamben did not live up to his reviewers opinion of him. The book's argument is compelling in places, but by no means intruiging overall, and far from new. If Agamben aims to adjust ethical terms by using auschwitz as limit situation (which is by no means wrong) he can only do so by 'correcting' actual survivors' testimony, and placing himself in a position of having a truer knowledge of life in the camps than those who were actually there. Auschwitz is by no means simple to write about, and Agamben's book is not worthless, though something of a bad first step towards his proposed project.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, Captivating, Unspeakable.......2005-04-26

I read this book after having read Agamben's big book "Homo Sacer." I found the analysis of bare life (homo sacer) in that book to be so fascinating that I picked up "Remnants," to see where else Agamben might go. This book is some of the most compelling theory I have read to date. The book has three major categories of analysis: the witness, the musselman (literally, the muslim), and shame. Each of these three categories have to do with the inhuman quality of being human and the speakability of that which is unspeakable. Indeed, Agamben deploys subtle thought in order to construct these internal contradictions that actually played on in the extreme case of Auschwitz. As one might expect from the title, this book is haunting. The testimonials given of the Musselman are particularly disturbing. Indeed, the experiences of Auschwitz is unspeakable. Perhaps, most startling is that Agamben argues our modern political paradigm is basically a sedated Auschwitz in which all of us can be turned into Musselmen, indeed, the musselman is that inhuman potential within our humanity. In short, this book is haunting, captivating, yet, unspeakable in the topics it tackles and the issues with which it wrestles. If you are not acquainted with Agamben, then, you might first be taken off guard by his verse and thesis style. But once you get in the flow, the form of his writing adds to its content.

In a far-flung capitalistic empire among the stars, generations of colonization without a single contact with an intelligent, non-human species have reduced the colonial process to a franchise system. Amid the abuses of the system which inevitably follow, an old woman decides not to leave when her failed colony is evacuated, thinking the freedom to live alone and die in peace is worth any risk. In this entertaining but suspenseful first-contact novel, Elizabeth Moon's apt depiction of the interaction between old and young plays counterpoint to the interaction between human and alien.

    Book Description

For forty years, Colony 3245.12 has been Ofelia’s home. On this planet far away in space and time from the world of her youth, she has lived and loved, weathered the death of her husband, raised her one surviving child, lovingly tended her garden, and grown placidly old. And it is here that she fully expects to finish out her days–until the shifting corporate fortunes of the Sims Bancorp Company dictates that Colony 3245.12 is to be disbanded, its residents shipped off, deep in cryo-sleep, to somewhere new and strange and not of their choosing. But while her fellow colonists grudgingly anticipate a difficult readjustment on some distant world, Ofelia savors the promise of a golden opportunity. Not starting over in the hurly-burly of a new community . . . but closing out her life in blissful solitude, in the place she has no intention of leaving. A population of one.

With everything she needs to sustain her, and her independent spirit to buoy her, Ofelia actually does start life over–for the first time on her own terms: free of the demands, the judgments, and the petty tyrannies of others. But when a reconnaissance ship returns to her idyllic domain, and its crew is mysteriously slaughtered, Ofelia realizes she is not the sole inhabitant of her paradise after all. And, when the inevitable time of first contact finally arrives, she will find her life changed yet again–in ways she could never have imagined. . . .

A book in three parts. A colony on a planet pulls out, as their sponsor has sold it to someone else. One elderly woman decides to stay behind.

She enjoys her freedom, to start with, and starts investigating things she couldn't do before.

Eventually, she starts a relationship with the natives of the planet, which becomes important when yet another corporate survey team turns up wanting to use the planet.

I put off buying this book because it sounded dull, however once I bought it and got around to reading it, I was pleasantly surprised. True there are some dull spots but on the whole it was quite good.
I have all of the books written by Ms. Moon that I have heard of and really like everything of hers I have read. I am waiting anxiously for her next one "Engaging the Enemy".

    5 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking delight!.......2005-02-04

When her husband Humberto died, Ofelia became her son's dependent in the eyes of Sims Bancorp. Forty years after she helped to found Colony 3245.12, all of her children but Barto are dead along with their father; and Ofelia tolerates her domineering daughter-in-law Rosara as best she can. When Sims Bancorp sends a ship to withdraw the colonists, after deciding to abandon its unprofitable colony and cede its license to the world that Ofelia now considers her home, the company demands extra payment for relocating the useless old woman who will probably die in cryosleep, anyway. Luckily for Ofelia, though, she's scheduled for a later shuttle than Barto and Rosara. When she slips away from the village to hide in the nearby, still untouched alien forest, the only two people who would protest her absence are already in the cryotanks. Soon the ship is gone, leaving Ofelia alone. And that's just fine with her.

The old woman revels in her solitude, because this is the first time in her long life that she's been free from the demands and restrictions placed on her by others. She tends her garden, competently maintains the village's power plant, and laughs when she throws her last pair of detested shoes into the recycler. Then another company's ship enters orbit, and starts to insert a colony at a location thousands of miles from Ofelia's village. At which time she, and the newly arrived colonists, find out that this world has indigenous intelligent life after all.

The friend who recommended this book to me was right. Ofelia, a person who had little worth to start with in her society's eyes - a housewife and mother, educated no more than necessary to perform her expected tasks - has no value at all now, in age and physical infirmity. But what she does have, a naturally intelligent old woman's experience and wisdom and insight, turn out to be exactly what the unexpected and dangerous first contact situation on her adopted world requires. Grumpy and no longer willing to suffer fools gladly - still savoring life, but no longer reluctant to risk leaving it behind if that's the price of being free at last to make her own choices - Ofelia is at once a fully realized individual, and a worthy representative of all the other wise and salty old women whose value too few Human societies appreciate. Or even comprehend.

    A thought-provoking delight!

5 out of 5 stars A classic of Science Fiction and a great human story.......2005-01-17

I could not disagree more with the last two reviewers.

First, it may spend some time with Ophelia and her solitary existence, and I actually put the book down for a while because of that, but I loved the book in the end.

OK, it may poke experts in the eye, but being and "expert" myself I can only say it is really overrated and in general we overrate ourselves. There are idiots and twits in every profession, mine included.

But, it tells a very interesting and captivating story about a little old lady in very improbable circumstances who, in the end, finds herself and a new meaning in her life.

Read it... I think you will enjoy ie.

3 out of 5 stars What happened to research?.......2005-07-04

K.A. has forgoten one of the most important things when she wrote the Remnant series. Realism. The first book was by far the best in the series, a book that I liked more then most of the animorphs books even. Then, something happened. I lost my connection with the setting as soon as I figured out the nature of the "planet" the Remnants reside on.

One of the main selling points of animorphs was the realism. You felt that these yeerks could possibly be right next door, or even in your town.

I know it's not right to compare an author's series, but I personally agree with the reviewer below. I should never of had to force myself to "go along" with the story sometimes. The events and other things that happend were just so far out there I lost interest. It would have been much more interesting if they had landed on a -real- planet and had maybe found some sort of spacecraft on it latter.

Despite these points, I must say that K.A. is still a riveting writer. If you are a K.A. or Animorphs fan I reccomend you read/buy the first book and the second to see if you will like the series.

4 out of 5 stars A dark, depressing, intruiging page-turner.......2003-10-09

After Lost and Found this book manages to rise above its predecessor in quality, but delves even deeper into Applegate's dark, depressing, intruiging story.

Stranded on the post-apocalyptic, rather inhospitable Earth, the remaining Remnants struggle to survive, though it seems unlikely. How they manage to survive, not just on Earth, but through the rather cataclysmic pychotropic Dream Storm. . . well, that's why you read the book.

This is the last book where D-Caf makes a significant appearnace, and where we get our first in depth look at the Alphas, survivors of the apocalypse, and most particularly Echo, and a look our first look at the Marauders, the other group of survivors, although their society is covered more in the next book.

The book is extremely dark, especially with the scenes with the older kids, but I couldn't put the book down, and the characters, for once, are so desperate and extreme as to seem slightly more than two-dimensional for once, and the ending only leaves you wanting more. Even if you're not a Remnants fan, this book should offer an interesting read.

4 out of 5 stars Only good for sci-fi fans.......2003-04-12

I read this book in one day and really enjoyed it. It has a intersting storyline and many deaths. If you like sci-fi books and surival books then you will enjoy this. One problem. Way to short. I finished this book in three hours. Still recommened it.

3 out of 5 stars Still got the same ol' feelin.......2003-03-04

Remants one opened up and had a pretty good story that I thought would open up an even greater series than the author's previous series, Animorphs and Everworld. Remnants ended up being wierd and started to get weirder and weirder by every book.
Now, the books started to level off after awhile, but then they returned to earth and things started to get wierder. This book has just thrown the series back into the wierd phase. I always used to get weirded out when i would read earlier remnant books(#2-#8). I would always feel wierded out and like i was in the twilight zone. I would have to psyche myself out before reading one of these books.
This book is interesting until they experience the "dream storm". This is described as a psychoenergetic storm or something like that. It isnt really plausible( even less so than previous things in remnants) It was kinda wierd and It got me disoriented towards the end of the book of where the characters really were and what was really happening.
I never really liked the nickname urself mindframe that seems to have taken over the kids. What happened to plain ol Roger, Jim, John, Samantha, or the like. It bothered me that some of the earth remnants(the ones that stayed behind) seemed to have stayed in that mindset but some of them had slightly normal names which somewhat pleased me.
Im just glad that were away from "mother" ( probably jsut temporarily) the end of the book promises that maybe it wont get as wierd as it was aboard mother and that the story can get more interesting.
Overall, this book was okay and I'm just reading the series to see what happens instead of being totally interested in the series. In the end, this book just left me with the same ol feelin.
