Book Description
Eleven-year-old Erin Myrren's life was transformed on the night she was sexually abused by her cousin, someone she loved and trusted. As the abuse continued, and as she was forced to see her abuser over and over again in social situations, she struggled with self-doubt, panic attacks, nightmares and the weight of whether or not to tell her terrible secret. It wasn't until a traumatic series of events showed her the cost of silence that she chose to speak out-in the process destroying both her family and the last of her innocence. Through her personal diary, written during the years of her abuse, Erin Myrren shares her journey through pain and confusion to inner strength and, ultimately, forgiveness. Raw, powerful and unflinchingly honest, Stolen Innocence is the inspiring story of one girl's struggle to become a woman, and a bright light on the pain and devastation of abuse. Stolen Innocence is written with conviction and clarity. [Erin Myrren] doesn't hold back, and I respect her honesty and openness...By the end of the book, I thought I was reading passages from a much older adult than a high school senior. Erin has grown into a strong, wise, intelligent, perceptive, spiritual, caring adult." --Susan Reedquist, The Children's Advocacy Center
Customer Reviews:
An Amazing Memoir.......2006-08-07
A riveting and very sober account of the harrowing experience of child abuse as told by the victim. In the end this memoir ia an uplifting account of how perseverance overcame the fear of telling the truth. An amazing book.
Tells The Story Of Many.......2006-02-07
Giving voice to unspeakable abuse is what prevents it from propagating. Only when it remains in the dark is its sinister purpose accomplished. This young woman was able to finally put aside her own fears and come out of the shadows to illuminate the disconsolate corners of her life that had been concealed from her parents and even her own sister.
I read the book cover to cover in one sitting and had to choke back tears of recognition in several places. The book resonated deeply within me as we had a somewhat similar situation in our own family. Often, the revelation is as traumatic as the original abuse with the survivor suffering much more than the perpetrator even in the punishment phase.
Nonetheless, Erin has sparked a flame that now needs to be passed among survivors and their supporters to shed light on a subject that is too often veiled by silence.
Together we can bring light to the suffering. As survivors we need to continue to speak out, to support one another, and educate the public to prevent the growing scourge of sexual assault and child molestation. Thank you Erin for lighting the candle.
Stolen Innocence: A Must Read.......2005-09-27
I found Erin Merryn's book by chance in the bookstore. I'm glad I did. I started reading the book and finished it in one night. Erin tells her story by using diary entries that she made at the time the abuse was taking place. She doesn't hold back. The result is a book that gives the reader the true horror of sexual abuse and its devastating effects on young girls. Stolen Innocence is a book that will stay with the reader long after the last page is turned. The story is heartbreaking and inspirational at the same time. What I liked about the book was how Erin educates the reader on the harsh realities of sexual abuse in this society by citing statistics. From there, she takes the reader on the horrifying journey of living with sexual abuse day in, day out. You feel the fear and pain with every word she writes. Sexual abuse is a topic that many tend to "push under the carpet." I applaud Erin for the courage she displays, for her ability to convey her story, and for being a survivor of sexual abuse. The communication between Erin and her abuser is a great addition to the book. Erin allows the reader to witness her raw emotions as she confronts her abuser in a series of emails. This book would be helpful to survivors of sexual abuse and to those who desire to help a loved one who has been abused. A great read!
A CHANGED LIFE!!.......2005-07-09
Anyone that has ever lived through the horrifying experience of being raped, just as I have, needs to read this enlightening and healing memoir of hope. Erin Merryn unashamedly bares all in her narrative, recounting the mental, emotional, physical and sexual abuse that she so courageously overcame by breaking the silence of this most heinous of violations. From writing this book, she has given voice to those of us who were afraid to venture out with our own stories due to the stigma and the shame associated with this crime. This book overcame for me what years of counseling could not do. By her candor and her kind and gentle spirit you will be guided to a new self-awareness. You will most definitely come away from reading "Stolen Innocence" a much stronger, more assertive and hope-filled person. No longer will you consider yourself a victim, but rather, a Survivor!!
A MUST READ!!!!.......2005-06-11
I read this book in a different situation than most...I read it knowing the author!!! Having grown up with her and her family, and being very close with them, while reading the book I knew exactly what/who/where she was talking about throughout the whole thing. This is a wonderful and amazing book that everyone should read! The facts in this book are sad but true details that everyone should look for...this sort of abuse is nothing to be in denial about when it comes to your family/friends or whoever else. It can be dealt with...as Erin proves in her book because of her strength. Erin, the author, of this incredible book is a truly magnificent, beautiful and intelligent young woman that is going to go so far in life...because she held her head high and shared her story only to help other young women across the country have the same power to come forward about this horrible action that takes place so often! AWESOME!!!

Customer Reviews:
Courageous Story!.......2007-08-17
Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views (8/07)
Elaine Carole was only seven-years old when her adopted father, Paul Carole, the man she trusted, the man that should have been her protector, raped her for the first time. The abuse continued for ten years. Her mother never suspected the life of terror her daughter lived each day. As with many victims, Elaine Carole blamed herself. She felt guilty and feared for her brother and mother. Courageously Elaine relives the nightmare of molestation, rape, and cruelty in hopes of saving others. Even as an adult she kept the sexual molestation a secret from everyone until Sergeant Chris Long asked to interview her concerning charges against her stepfather stemming from accusations of a child in his neighborhood. After soul-searching, she knew she had to tell the horror of her childhood so that Paul Carole could be prevented from harming another child.
This book had to be written. Elaine Carole pluckily tells her story of sexual mistreatment at the hands of her father. She hopes to educate and help others. This was not an easy story to examine; I am sure it was even more painful to write. Elaine's story brings out the reader's emotions. I found myself in tears several times, as I hurt for the child that was a victim. I found myself cheering as Elaine triumphed over her past. I respect her bravery in reliving her painful memories, to help others. I rejoiced to read how Elaine grew from prey to a conquering advocate for victims. I could not put this book down and read it in one sitting. Ms. Carole is a talented author adept at sharing her passion and memories. I highly recommend "Stolen Innocence," by Elaine Carole, to parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. I recommend this book to everyone, for we should all be aware of the reality of sexual abuse. Thank you, Elaine Carole, for your courageous story.
If this story can save one more victim............2007-05-09
As stated by the two previous posts, this was a very difficult story, but one that needed to be told. I hope this story gives victims out there the courage to tell their story and get more abusers off the streets. I can't begin to imagine the painful memories the author had to relive by telling her story, or the courage it took for her to put it in writing. I truly admire her bravery and strength in getting through that tough time and seeing to it that justice was served.
Very insightful and honest.......2007-05-07
This book was a tough read in parts, but I feel it is very important that it be that way to show people how these horrible things happen and that if they are happening to you or you suspect to someone you know, perhaps the experiences shared by this brave author will give someone the courage to ask for help. Or give someone the insight to see that this may be happening to someone else and get them help. To have the courage to relive these awful memories to help others was truly a courageous thing to do and hopefully gives the author some peace and closure to her own experiences.
Heartbraking.......2007-05-05
I loved this book, the author had such a difficult story to tell and told it in a way that brought out so many emotions. While reading this book I cried and I cheered her on. This was one I couldn't put down once I started to read. As the author state's, if telling her story helps one person than it was worth telling. She must be an amazing women.

Customer Reviews:
It was like reading my own story...............2005-07-18
Erin's book helped me in ways that I cannot even begin to explain. She told her story in an open, honest way, not holding anything back. I too was sexually abused by a family member, and being able to relate to her story has helped me more than years of therapy has. Being sexually abused has made me feel removed from the world, and that I will never be able to truly relate to another person. I believe this is because my family has turned against me and my friends, although supportive, do not understand what I am going through.
I have read many books on the subject of sexual abuse, but they were all very clinical, writting about the facts and effects more than the actual expierence. That is because those books are written by experts on the field, not survivors themselves. Although they did help me understand why I am suffering the effects now, years later, they did not make me feel any less alienated and alone. Anyone who has been abused, or know someone who has should read this book. Erin is an amazing author who is going to change many people's lives.

RAPE SURVIVOR WITH CHANGED LIFE!!!.......2005-07-11
The first I ever heard of Erin Merryn was back in June 2005 when I came across this riveting treatise and gut-wrenching narrative of one of life's most devatating of experiences. What I read penetrated deep within my soul and I cried from cover to cover. What she recounts are the very same emotions that I dealt with having been a victim of male/male rape back in my teens as well. Like Erin, I too struggled with the constant fear of wondering when this viscious depravment, this heinous violation of my body, my emotions, and of my mind was going to be perpetrated against me yet again. It is a living hell, especially when the perpetrator threatens physical harm or violence forcing his victim to capitulate. I suppressed my overwhelming shame and guilt for the better part of four decades and it wasn't until I read Erin's book that I gained adequate strength to face down the adverse aftereffects. She also taught me that if thorough and complete healing were to come about, then it had to be my decision. I had had enough of the diminished self-worth, the self-doubt, the panic attacks, the night terrors, the nightmares, the flashbacks, and yes, decades of the resultant self-injury. Erin's determination to come out of hiding gave me the courage to come out completely to my friends and family alike. This has proven to be a very liberating and freeing experience and it was then that I knew that my recovery from this nightmare and my self-injury was secure. And yes, like Erin, I too ran into some denial from those around me, but likewise I refused to recant and cower at their intimidations. To date I have read this truly helpful book no less than four times and am into it yet again!! Of all of the rape books that I have read this past year, Erin's has been the most helpful. She has given me hope beyond words and I know that she will do likewise with whoever thirsts for freedom from this brutal and unbelievably violating attack. By her candor and her faith she also has guided me back to a very close relationship with my Creator. Like Erin, I am now peace-filled and I too have made it my life's goal to reach out to other crushed souls that have been devastated by this horrible bodily and emotional offense. Thank you very much Erin. Together, one by one, we will change the world!!

Innocence.......2005-06-27
This book is fascinating, upsetting and totally gripping. I thought it might be heavy going but in fact I could hardly put it down. I wanted to understand what happened in this case and everything was explained in ways I could easily understand. Even the legal stuff was 'translated'. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in this subject and who wants an absorbing summer read.

Customer Reviews:
Fascinating read.......2006-05-03
I saw this cover over a year ago, but forgot the title before I could find the book. I was thrilled when I found the book again, as the story had intrigued me. I was so impressed with the honesty of this story, of the humility of Mary Ann to be so honest, even when I'm sure it was hard for her to do. I'm also so proud of Jan--I've seen her movies and I was stunned when I realized she was the girl in this book. Evil definatley has a face and a name--as does faith and family unity.
And to the 'Revenge' reviewer--from the tone of the post I can't help but think it's Robert himself--this is the only review that reviewer has ever written. It sounds to me that he's still seeking his power any way he can. Anyone that read that book and has any decency in them would realize that it's not about revenge, it's about triumph. The book isn't about Robert--it's about a family who survives the worst life has to offer at the hands of a twisted man. They are now willing to tell their story so as to spare someone else from having to live through the same torment.
My only complain (the reason for 4 stars) is that I'd have liked to have Jan's portions written in first person like Mary Ann's was and I'd have liked to have the information presented with more detail to the chronology, there were places where it skipped to future, then back again. All it all it was very well told and well written--especially since it's been 30 years.
I'm a little curious.......2004-04-21
To the person who wrote the review entitled "Revenge? Hate?" I am curious to know how you know that this book, as you put it, is "destroying a man and his present family"? Do you personally know the kidnaper? From the things you said in your review, I am guessing that you do. To me it sounds like you are the one with a lot of hate. The author didn't "smear" anyone's name, the kidnaper did that to himself when he committed the crimes. You act like we should have sympathy for the kidnaper. But let me tell you, I know how it is to spend a lifetime to recover from abuse and I don't have sympathy for someone who would kidnap and molest an innocent child. You also asked why the author waited so long to write the book. As a victim, I know that sometimes it takes a very long time before a person is ready to talk about such horrible crimes. It is frightening and shameful to have gone through such things. When I read this book (and I happened to also go to a conference where the victim spoke) I didn't feel that the author was judging the kidnaper. I think it could have been much worse against the perpetrator if that had been the goal. She wasn't writing about everything that has happened over the past 30 years, she didn't write whether the person had or hadn't changed since the events of the book, she just wrote about the experiences of the time of the kidnaping. And she wrote it in a way that truly hit home to me. I know what it feels like to be terrified every day because of abuse. I wish I would have had the courage to tell someone many years ago. This book gives victims some strength and courage. I applaud it. I think everyone should read this book!
Revenge? Hate?.......2004-04-21
This is a good story for parents to help them be aware of what could happen to their children. However, why did the author feel it was so necessary to repeatedly state the name of the friend that took their daughter? THE ENTIRE STORY COULD HAVE BEEN TOLD USING AN ANNOMYNOUS NAME INSTEAD OF DELIBERATLY SMEARING A PERSON'S NAME ON ALMOST EVERY PAGE OF THE BOOK!! The reason I say this is that it has been 30 long years since this event happened and people do change. Why dig up all this dirt and destroy a man and his present family over something that happened so long ago?
The answer?.....Some people(the ones who wrote this book)can ONLY JUDGE and are unable to forgive.
I did alot of things 30 years ago that I am ashamed of but with wisdom and age have learned the wrong of my mistakes and become a better person. Don't most of us become wiser and better as we age. Would you want to be judged today by things you did 30 years ago?
My father's associate was charged with molesting a 12 yr old girl. It was in all the papers and very, very biased. The papers never asked for his side of the story. His career(a Pediatrician) was ruined! He over-dosed on pills due to the trauma. Two weeks after his death the girl admitted she had made it all up BECAUSE SHE WANTED SOME ATTENTION!! Not only did she kill a wonderful man, she ruined the lives of his wife, 8 children, and 900 pediatric patients.
To the author I would like to ask these questions.......why did you wait 30 long years to write this story? Did Elizabeth Smart's book motivate you to take advantage of the moment and cash in on the profits while the market was "HOT"? Why have you not found forgiveness in your heart?
To the reader I would give this advice: Do not judge a book by it's cover. Be assured there is more to this story than meets the eye!
AMAZING STORY!.......2004-03-28
Jan Broberg Felt is my cousin and Mary Ann Broberg is my aunt. I was a small child when Jan was abducted and my memories and knowledge of the abductions were vague. This book told me so much that I didn't know about Jan's story. I was amazed and horrified by all of it.
I encouraged both of my teenage daughters to read this book and am telling everyone I know about this story. It's so well written and were it not true would be almost unbelievable.
This book really is a must read!
Why Isn't Berchtold In Jail.......2004-03-24
Jan Broberg Felt is my 3rd cousin's wife. I found her story both tragic and compelling. Indeed the book is a "page turner." I'm proud Jan now carries the Felt family name because of how she has aquitted her life since the tragedy. Robert Berchtold should have gone to jail for a long time, but he weasled his way free. Even this month I hear he tried to run down one of Jan's body guards. He's a real piece of work.
