a pretty good book.......2007-09-30

like i said before, it's a pretty good book. the only reasons I'm marking it down is because of Cloudpaw and Bluestar. Cloudpaw constantly gets in trouble and that gets very annoying, especially when Fireheart doesn't punish him enough. And Bluestar's frustrating, thinking that everyone is a traitor and not coming out at all. She has also given up belief of StarClan. Overall, a pretty good book

In this book, Fireheart can't help thinking that Tigerclaw will carry out his threat against Fireheart and Thunderclan. A storm is rising that might distroy the Clan and they don't even know about it.

This book is an awesome adventure/fantasy about cats.I love the warrior series and I am the only person in the whole [..]who reads them!My BFF is going to borrow them because we LOVE adventure stories and we love fantasy stories.This book has lots of killings and betrayals, but they are still awesome books and I think that EVERYBODY should read this series because I know that they would love them!!!!

Fireheart is the new ThunderClan deputy and Tigerclaw is still roaming in the forest. With Bluestar still struck by Tigercaw's sudden betrayal, Fireheart must do everything. Also an apprentice is breaking the warrior code double overtime! And in the story are 5 mysterious deaths. And for some odd reason, Fireheart is afraid of Bramblekit, Tigerclaw and Goldenflower's kit! Goldenflower is not afraid knowing that Bramblekit will never know his father. But the big question is will he? Bluestar is also on her last life and Fireheart and Yellowfang know! (well Bluestar also knows of course.) And with a disease spreading through the forest, how will the cats survive? And why is WindClan still mad even though ThunderClan killed Brokentail?

Gets worse with repetition.......2007-02-06

I'd admit it. I used to love this book when I was like 13. Now I'm 21. 8 or so years of military amateurism and general maturity growth has changed my view. It is with the latter heart that I write this.

First, Clancy's strength - Technical. Superficially, it looks good, but closer looks suggest otherwise. If there's a fuzz zone (particularly common in Cold War texts), it is used for NATO's benefit. Soviet subs have no towed arrays, fighters have no IRSTs, tanks don't have dedicated loaders (autoloading or human) nor ammo that can penetrate early M1s (DU-armored tanks are years in the future). NATO of course has deadly fire control, God's-eye-view, near unjammable Intel assets .... etc. All of it adds up until the real miracle is that the Soviets are advancing at all. This is not only UNrealistic, but does nothing to promote exciting battles where all have a real chance.

Tactics. Kinda same as Technical. NATO made maybe 2 "real" mistakes without being made to pay the full price. The Soviets slowly fritter advantages away, and in contrived ways. Western theory holds that the Soviets lack of initiative will hurt them. Clancy seems to agree. Fine, let's see how it is implemented.

1) 3rd Shock Army schedules an attack. The commander of the Western TVD fires 3rd Shock commander for lack of progress. Instead of just sticking to the plan and attacking at the scheduled time, the deputy does not give the call. This is, actually, an act of initiative (though utterly stupid), and of course it buys the Germans a chance to counterattack.

2) A Soviet motor-rifle division NEARLY blows a hole through the American lines. An extra regiment is required. The only one close by happens to an OMG unit, and thus unmovable without talking to Moscow. Alekseyev mutters about Soviet inflexibility. This is not Soviet inflexibility, guys. If an American formation was declared out of bounds by the Pentagon, American commanders will be equally forbidden to move it. This is contrived stupidity to delay the attack, allow the Americans to reinforce, and wipe out the rest of the motorized rifle division and the tank regiment.

3) A division rushes through a hole in the advance. They fight their way towards bridges. A short-sighted Sov regimental commander calls for artillery to fire ON the bridges to stop the NATO escapees. In Soviet theory, he should only have direct and rapid access to his regimental arty group (a battalion of light howitzers). Soviet centralization should at least stop his stupidity at that level, since the divisional arty would be under divisional control, especially since they have their own fire missions already assigned and executing. But of course, the Soviets CAN'T be given that advantage, so divisional arty drops its own fire missions and fires on the bridge with rockets.

This stuff adds up, and the Soviets are defeated. Is anyone shocked?

Characterization: Cardboard cutouts. Protagonists are at best one and a half dimensional, goody-goody personalities. Subprotagonists like Sgt Mackall (commander of an Invincible M1 Tank) are maybe zero dimensional. Worst of all, you quickly get the idea they won't die. So much for sympathizing with them.

Conclusion: Read this off the library. Then read something like "Red Army".

This is Clancy's masterpiece.......2007-02-05

I have just recently re-read this book (the first go around was back in high school, some 15 years ago) and I was once again enthralled by the extremely vivid descriptions and very tense environments created in this book.

Red Storm Rising describes a scenario for World War Three, between the Soviet Union and NATO. Keep in mind this was written in the mid 1980's, when the Soviet Union was still alive and kicking. The scenario is very well thought out, well researched and developed, and somewhat plausible. The political machinations of the Soviet Politburo prior to the conflict is described, as are the military preparations and the justifications for starting the war.

The character development necessarily must focus on only a small handful of characters in the book, but I did not think that was a detriment, because to flesh out several dozen characters would have made the book 2000 pages long, which I'm sure nobody would be brave enough to read. Of course, if you want to read this book, it's probably because you enjoy books about war in general and understand at least a little bit about tactics and strategy, but if you're looking for an easy to digest read with complex characters, you're going to be disappointed. If you're looking for a taut, suspenseful, well-written thriller, than I definitely recommend this book.

Even though it's a long read, it's well worth it.

Red Storm Rising.......2007-02-01

Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy was published by Barkley Publishing Group in 1986. The genre that this book falls into would definitely be suspense. This book is 725 pages of twists and turns. The book deals with the U.S. and the Soviet Union during the cold war era.
The book takes place in Eastern Europe where most of the fighting occurs. The protagonist would be NATO and the antagonist would be the Soviet Union. After a large oil field is destroyed by terrorists, the Soviet Union decides that if they have any chance of surviving, then they must fight back. By staging an explosion and blaming it on Germany they have all they need to start the war. The Soviet Union had prepared its troops before hand so they had hoped to have surprise on their side. Unfortunately for the Soviets they lose the element of surprise in a bizarre twist of fate. To find out who will win the war you should read the book yourself.
I thought that the book was exciting and intense. It kept me at the edge of my seat after every chapter. This is an extremely realistic war novel that surpasses any book I've read before. If you are a fan of Tom Clancy or you want to read something exciting and suspenseful then I definitely recommend reading this book; you won't be disappointed.

Book Review

Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising published by Berkley Publishing Group in 1986 is 725 pages long and is suspenseful novel. This book deals with the cold war turning into a world war.
The book starts off with a terrorist attack that forces the war. Then it takes a while for the war to swing into full gear. The war is told from multiple characters around the globe so you can experience the war more fully. The protagonists are the NATO countries while the Soviet Union is the antagonist. This book covers the entire war and the war constantly swings in favor of one side. Also political factors are dealt with along with economic and obviously militaristic factors making this book as real as you can get to a war simulation. Who will win? Read to find out!
This book uses a lot of military vocabulary during the battles so you should have some knowledge of the military. Even though this book is amazingly realistic it is a longer read. I loved the strategic view by the generals. The fights that occur like at Iceland are written extremely well. Red Storm Rising is hard to put down. This book is a classic.
I strongly recommend reading this book. It is one of the best books I've read. READ IT!

Outstanding--Wargames.......2006-10-27

Outstanding; superior to anything in its genre; non stop suspense page after page, and swiftly moves from scene to scene. Clancy did his homework. He has an eye for detail; a realistic and plausible story. It can be hard at times to forget the book is fictitious. No details are missed (I presume). He brings out a wonderful personal look into the characters. Plenty of technical and military jargon. Could this be an accurate portrayal of the Russian: his speech, his actions, the party, the expendability of life?

The story takes place near the end of the "cold war". Wargames: Russia vs NATO; a fictional war in the North Atlantic and Europe. Reluctant to show any economic weakness, Russia decides on war. Detailed battles and maneuvers--capabilities of craft: surface ships, subs, tanks, and planes from both sides of the front. Clancy plays no favorites. I did not realize the potential technological capabilities in the mid 80's.

Firecats rule! :).......2003-01-13

Karal, Sun Priest of Karse, has now become the Karsite envoy to Valdemar. He and the other representatives of the Alliance countries must figure out a way to keep their homes safe from the worsening Mage Storms. But Karal's youth and apparent inexperience make other older council members discredit him, and Karal's forgiving nature makes irrational council members dislike him. As Karal struggles to represent his homeland, it begins to take a toll on his health. Only his friends An'desha, Natoli, and the Firecat Altra keep him from becoming ill. However, as the Storms worsen, the temporary protections against them begin to wear away. Will Karal, with the help of Altra, An'desha, the Tayldras Adept Firesong, and the Companion Florian, be able to prevent the Storms from destroying his home forever?

"Storm Rising" is the second book in Mercedes Lackey's Mage Storms Trilogy. I really enjoyed it, though not quite as much as "Storm Warning."

It was slower paced than its predecessor and focused much more on the development of the characters. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing; I enjoy character development and tend to take my time reading books like that instead of rushing through them. Karal's relationships with his nonhuman friends Altra and Florian were filled out nicely, and I continue to enjoy the senses of humor that Lackey endows upon her characters. Firesong's spiral down into obsession and semi-depression was disturbingly real. Tremane came along marvelously. I liked him in "Warning," but the caring way in which he begins to rule Hardorn shows him to be an even more decent human being than I expected.

The climax is quite similar in basic structure to that in "Warning," but that is mostly due to Mage Storm problem that the Alliance is facing. However, it was different enough for me to appreciate what happened. My only complaint is that it came so close to the end of the book that there was no real denouement.

Bottom Line: A solid continuation of the trilogy that really lets you get to know the characters.

good, but disappointing.......2002-04-01

When I first got this book I was very excited to start reading it because of the great summary on the back. Truth be told, the back describes pretty much only the last chapter. The whole rest of the book is just showing what people thinking and having very little action. Besides that, it mostly shows Firesong's and Tremane's thoughts instead of Karal's, who is the lead character in the book. The only reason why I gave this book a three at all is because of the final chapter. In this chapter it has the climax of the book plus all the facts leading up to it. Overall, this book was okay, but definately not one of Mercades Lackeys best.

A One-Two Knock Out Punch.......2001-10-22

Faced with more challenges that many people - including himself - think he can handle, Karal struggles to maintain the Karsite presence on what has turned into both a series of brainstorming sessions regarding the magestorms and a likely council of war against the threat in Hardon. Against all the various stresses, he continues to serve the Sunlord while still wishing to be anywhere but. His relationships with An'desha, Natoli, and Altra continue to grow and mature in what little time he has for them, but duties and questions pile up faster than he can deal with them.

My favorite of the books in the series, STORM RISING lets me ride along on Karal's shoulder again. Lackey deals with some very realistic issues, such as others' reactions to Karal's age in the political arena and the desire for revenge. Likewise, she showed how thinking beyond revenge can have positive consequences. The spirit of cooperation between the various countries involved is enviable in this day and age, where war seems to pop up everywhere.

This is the last book of this series where the plot and writing seem to be up to par. However, I still enjoy curling up with this one and losing myself in Haven, walking along with Karal to the tavern or listening in on the discussions with the mages and the envoys. The visit by Solaris was a definite treat, one that opened up a whole new range of possibilities and explored some of them. We understand even more of Tremane and it's relief to see him join up with the 'good' side.

This is one of the books I read and then wish my life had a little more of the magic she puts into her books.

All right, but not up to usual standards.......2001-07-02

From age 13, I've followed the Heralds of Valdemar series, reading and rereading them over and over. Though Storm Rising is by no means the worst Misty book I've read, from about here on the quality of the books she puts out begins slipping. I was enchanted by the Arrows series, even more so by the Winds series, but the Storms series seem to be missing something. Maybe it's the lack of development between the characters. In its defense, Storm Rising is, alas, the last book to have the wonderful handdone drawings by Larry Dixon. Very uncool. From here on out, they're all computer generated. The artwork in the beginnings of the chapters are one of my favorite things about Misty's books, and I was sorely disappointed when they disappeared. Again, I know I'm giving the impression of a book not worth reading, but please don't take it that way! It really is worth reading, I'm just pointing out the fact that it's not quite as good as her previous books. Perhaps if she spent more time on her characters and less time trying to push out just one more book before the year ends the quality of her work will go back up.

Well hmm...........2000-06-25

I love the Valdemar series, but this is definately not one of my favorite series in the bunch. The plotline is very good, I admit: The various countries must band together and all chip in to find some way to defend themselves against a larger enemy who is determined to rule them all. At the same time, ancient echoes of a tremendous amount of magic being released are striking on man again, making magic turn wild and rampant once again, threatening all that lives. The plot is good, but I found myself having trouble relating with the characters and finding my attention wandering. The best parts were those with Elspeth and Darkwind back in the story! But if you are a Heralds of Valdemar fan, then I would suggest you read it, but if not then I would start somewhere else.

Second in a great series.......2003-12-29

"T2 Rising Storm" is the second book in S.M. Stirling three book series set after Terminator 2, as with the first book, Mr.Stirling does a great job in letting the reader get a clear metal image of the action taking place in the book. The pace of the book is great and able to hold the reader's attention. Overall, this is a follow-up the first book and should not be missed by any fan of the Terminator Series.

Part 2 of a great series!.......2003-11-08

This book is extremely easy to get into as it picks up where the last book left off. You already know most of the characters and begin with a wetted appetite for more terminators! This book is just like the first--REALLY AWESOME! I must admit that I'm an avid T fan. If you are, then read the first, and then read this one!

Couldn't have been written by Stirling..........2003-08-24

This was a really bad book. I kept looking back at the cover to see if I could find (in small print) a co-author who had actually written it. It's hard to believe that Stirling would want to take "credit" for this turkey by himself, particularly after the Infiltrator gem. I fully concur with scifigaltx's review. It has the feel of multiple screenwriters - not necessarily authors - who have communicated their portions by email among themselves.

Has the economy sunk so deeply that the publisher has laid off all of the editors who would normally be paid to point out inconsistent points of view and motivations? Where is the reality and believability that Stirling brings to his writing? Can someone tell the real author that action sequences are most effective when they are forced upon the protagonists? Action in this nonsense is always the result of stupidity on the parts of all concerned, and is never a surprise.

The real surprise is the first awful book from S. M. Stirling. It happens to all authors, I suppose, but it's disappointing just the same.

T2: Rising Storm.......2003-08-20

Much as I said about T2: Infiltrator, T2: Rising Storm is a well-written sequel #2 to the second Terminator movie--Terminator 2: Judgment Day. In fact, Infiltrator and Rising Storm, written by veteran SciFi writer, S.M. Stirling, are a much better sequels to Terminator 2 than is the third movie in the series.

I had hoped, in vain as it turns out, that the next movie (Terminator 3) would follow Stirling's series. Stirling is a powerful fiction writer and his understanding of combative behavior is refreshing. (See some of his other works such as Drakon and Island In The Sea Of Time.)

This one is a good read.

Predictable, and cliche........2003-08-10

I really can't recomend this even to people who loved Infiltrator. Which I did. I figured out how it would end less than halfway through. But then, there's the obligatory love interest, the disaproving mother, escapes that are too convenient, and the last one is by far the worst. A needless death of a loved one to turn a character from a sympathetic hero, to a hardened warrior. What a let-down. I could almost have enjoyed the book but for that last one.

An excellent read by an excellent author!.......2007-02-10

Black Storm Rising by D. Shane Burton was an amazing read. I approached this book with an open mind. I was a bit leery about how science fiction and Christianity could be brought together but Burton did so flawlessly. The technical precision of Tom Clancy, along with the sci-fi storytelling of David Weber or Orson Scott Card is what I felt upon reading this book. There are those who have criticized the author for his unique writing style. I admit, after years and years of reading formulaic books it took some getting used to. After about the second chapter I was completely engrossed in the novel. The criticized style is one of the reasons this (and the sequels When Worlds Rage & Dark Tyrant's Ascension) novel is so enjoyable. I found myself excited about what would happen next. The characters are very well developed and their relationships with each other are equally so.
As was mentioned in another review, there are a few typos and errors. This is understandable since these books are self-published. These errors in no way detract from the story.
I would also like to address the Christianity of this book. There is no one denomination or viewpoint presented in these pages save for Biblical Christianity. It is not at all preachy or overbearing. It is however, an immensely important feature of not only the author's life, but of the lives of many of his characters. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the science-fiction genre.

Author Needs to Work on His Craft.......2007-01-13

This book received great reviews here on Amazon. so I sprung for the whole series. What a mistake! The premise of the book promises to be a great story, and it probably is a great story, but the poor writing gets in the way. He obviously has not learned the writing mantra "Show, don't tell." I could not get drawn into the story because I'd constantly think, "I can't believe he wrote that!!" Also, Mr. Burton has made his book a soapbox for his particular theology which is quite irritating.

I believe that Mr. Burton should hone his craft of writing and republish this book. Anything worth doing for the Lord is worth doing excellently.

Not As Good As I Hoped.......2006-12-03

After reading all the reviews on this book, and anything else I could find on it, I bought it from Amazon. It was not as good as I thought it would be. The author created a cool world, and had some interesting ideas, but it was very hard to read. The language through the whole book was very formal; even what was supposed to be slang! Also, there were a lot of characters, and you wanted one of them to come to the front and be the main character. No one really did, and you kept wondering who the story was about. This also made it hard to get drawn into the story, as you didn't really connect with the characters. It was unique enough to be interesting, which is why I gave it four stars, but it was also hard to read, so all in all, it was not as good as I had hoped.

A decent read, but needed editing........2006-11-21

First, let me say that this was a decent read and I'd probably recommend it if you're into Christian Sci-Fi and can find it for $8 or less. But be warned that this book is self-published, and it shows.

The book is difficult to follow until about 90 pages in, when all the characters begin to met together. Shane starts out with a huge number of characters who are introduced all at once and are located all over the globe. It was very difficult for me to place them in relation to one another, and I'm usually very good at that sort of thing. Also, they are all treated like THE main character so little time is spent with any one person. I didn't bond strongly with any one character, so when one of the good characters dies, you just kind of shrug and say, 'Oh, well. One less to keep track of.' If you don't care about the characters, how can you really care about the story? Unfortunately, I'll have forgotten this one before the year is out.

Also, the first 90 pages swing back and forth between sounding like a children's book and a scientific journal. Sound effects are all over the place and written like a child playing with toys: 'Bang! Bang! Bang! Three missiles slammed into...' (instead of 'three missiles slammed into the building and exploded with a loud bang.'). Then, a few sentences later, the writing gets overly scientific: 'He slowly moved deeper into the water because it was a low 62 degrees' (instead of '...because the water was chilly.'). These aren't actual quotes, just paraphrases from what I remember. However, the contrast between these two styles on one page is quite distracting. The writing does smooth out, dropping both extremes, after about 90 pages.

Again, let me say that the story idea is an intriguing and creative one. I just wish Shane had stuck with rewriting it until the story really shone like it deserved.

The snowball analogy.......2006-08-10

At first I found Mr. Burton's writing style a bit difficult to get use to. He definitely has a unique form. But, slowly, like the little snowball that collects more and more snow as it rolls, I was drawn into the story. It wasn't long before I found myself unable to put the book down and finished it in record time...at least for me. The one disappoint, though small, was the lack of a map. The book decribes many wonderful locations and I love to flip to maps to see the location of cities, oceans, mountains, and other geographic references. I have already ordered Volumes 2 and 3 in the series and can only hope a map will be in these. All-in-all it is a great story with uncompromising Christian faith at its center. With the book you know that Jesus is Lord even on other worlds.

Exciting Sequel to `First Instinct'.......2007-10-05

JLee Meyer continues to establish herself as a talent in the lesbian fiction genre. This is her third published novel and this reader hopes she continues writing for a very long time.

In this sequel to `First Instinct,' she takes the reader back to the lives of Conn Stryker and Leigh Grove as they continue to battle against the proverbial bad guys. Of course, these fellows (and one lady) aren't playing games and are willing to do anything to catch their quarry. In the process, Conn and Leigh meet a gang of women who are almost like a military contingent of Amazons. These women are both helpful and harmful to the protagonists, but ultimately know where their loyalties lie.

With many unexpected twists and turns, the story is exciting. The reader is constantly surprised with every turn of the page. We already know the characters, but she develops them even further in this continuation of their story.

Cheers to Meyer for a great book - and great wishes for many future publications.

Solid sequel.......2007-09-24

This was a solid sequel to First Instinct. I only have a few issues with the story.
1. It seems both Conn and Leigh got 'hot and heavy' fairly quickly and I think that more romantic tension could have played well.
2. The 'mysticism' of Leigh at the Buddist retreat was a tough pill to swallow as well as how the terrorists played into the group that had tried to kill Leigh and Conn in First Instinct. That part of the story didn't really come into focus.
3. And, on a technical note, we never do find out about the extent of Conn's injury. She should have at least been using a cane if she was shot in the thigh.
Overall, JLee tells a good story, and though this one may have been somewhat rushed, I enjoyed it.

Too complicated and violent.......2004-11-14

I was really looking forward to this sequel. I read the Seventh Seal and loved it. The Seventh Seal had a great plot and interesting characters. I especially liked Merry, one of the primary characters in The Seventh Seal. Unfortunately, Merry is mentioned only a few times in passing in this book. Too many complicated story lines are riddled with violence, hate, anger, and hopelessness. I'm not one for violence and some of the violence is described quite graphically. To be fair, I must say that the final days will probably be as wicked as they are described here. But I think I prefer not to read about the wickedness in quite so much detail. I cared about only a few of the characters in this book, and persevered to the end reluctantly. I was quite disappointed.

Action-packed AND clean! Wow!.......2004-10-14

This is the second book in a trilogy, and it doesn't disappoint! (The first book, Seventh Seal, was great, too!) The characters are real, interesting and I could really relate to them. It is superbly written, and the action grabs you and doesn't stop! You get to the end of the book and, after the initial burst of "No! It can't be over!", you want to immediately pick up the next book! Fortunately, the last one (Rising Storm) is FINALLY out! If you like masterful stories about interesting characters and are tired of the filthy language we often have to suffer through, then you'll like this trilogy--even if you're not "religious"!
