Daughter Loves it.......2007-09-04
This book was great for starting my daughter out with writing skills. My wife and I blindly assumed that we should start with the letters in her name (R) but the book has the kids starting out with straight lines (T, H, E, etc...). That makes a lot more sense. My daughter looks forward to working on her letters.
One watchout: I was told that most parents teach their kids to spell there names in all caps. However, I'm told this is very hard for teachers to correct once the kids start school.
Only reservation that I have about the book is that I'm guessing I will to need to buy several of them since the pages are single use.
Kumon does it again........2007-03-03
I've bought several Kumon books for my 3 yo daughter, this being the lastest. The layout is wonderful. It groups letters together by shape and pattern instead of order, moving from simple to complex. It offers many variations of the same skills and keeps my daughter's interest. I've never ask her if she wants to work in the book, she picks it up periodically and works in it as long as she wants. She effortlessly learned how to write L, H, T, I, E and F.
Preschool Writing.......2007-02-23
My daughter is 4, and just started preschool. She loves the workbook. It teaches her to make different lines before she started the letters, which helped her make them correctly. Great for beginners.
We love Kumon!.......2007-01-11
My girls love to do their workbooks! They are learning incredibly fast - and the Kumon books are colorful, engaging - and easy to understand! I would highly recommend the entire series.
Great introduction to writing uppercase letters!.......2006-10-30
I really like the straight forward and fun approach this book uses to help the student learn to write uppercase letters. This allows learning to write to be fun instead of boring. A + book.

Awesome Resources.......2007-07-10
These books are by far the BEST tools I have ever used for my preschool children. It teaches work ethic because they are simple and the children can work on them on there own after giving them instructions once. This is specific to my children who can not read yet. We set the timer for 20 minutes and that is our 'homework' time for my 2 & 4 year old. They love it and I'm teaching them to work independantly.
I can't get enough of these books!
really well done.......2007-06-12
I bought four Kumon workbooks for my 5 year old. This will be our first year homeschooling and I am totally thrilled. With all of the workbooks there are about sixteen full color pages and after that they are printed in two-color. They are all very well organized, incremental and simply laid out. The illustrations are great - they make the pages interesting but they don't get in the way of the work. Some children might not like how similar every page is to the next, however for my child this will be absolutely perfect! She likes being confident in what she is supposed to do and enjoys doing the same (or similar) thing over and over.
The one thing about this particular book that I don't like is that I don't think it has quite enough review work. It goes like this: two pages of a new letter for three letters, then two pages of review for those three letters. The ten pages of a-z review at the end. I think I'll photocopy the review pages to have her do over.
I love the book and am confident that it will work really well.
great help for preparing for school!!!.......2007-05-12
not only do i love this book, but my 5 year old LOVES it too! he thinks it is fun and is eager to practice. it is not only great for practicing writing the letters but also is a tool for learning the lowercase letters. a must have for kids getting ready for kindergarten!

A free greeting card is included with the holiday edition. My New York is a stunning visual celebration of one of the world's most fabled cities and is sure to be treasured by New Yorkers and non-New Yorkers, and young and old alike.

Overseas cousins LOVE it!.......2007-07-06
Bought this for my little cousins overseas to help them understand where we live. Apperently their mother likes it more than them! Now they know where I'm talking about when i say we went to Central park today or the zoo. i'll be buying more for my friends children as gifts. Great book.
Must have!.......2006-08-16
The pictures are colorful, very detailed, and are a lot of fun to look at. It's narrated by a little girl who's venturing the famous sites of NYC. I had fun reading it and I'm
sure kids will like it. I got the new anniversary edition. I really recommend it. NYC may change years from now. This book captures and reminisces our exciting city during our time...2002.
excellent.......2006-08-12
I thought that this was an excellent book. The pictures are great. I read it to my kids before visiting New York and after reading the book my kids could not wait to see all of the places that we read about. My daughter was especially thrilled to ride the same horse on the central park carousel that the little girl in the book rode.
Beautiful book; be aware of the promotional notes.......2005-09-15
This is a beautiful book, full of detailed illustrations kids love to explore. Parents should note that not only is it littered with promotional messages, but that several of them promote Scientology/L. Ron Hubbard/Dianetics.
Great Gift for a Child Visitor .......2005-07-27
I've given this book to many little children who have come to visit me in Manhattan. Little kids love this book as well as Lisa in New York, and "big kids" (ages 8 to 12) love Melanie in Manhattan which is a children's novel about a double love story set in NYC. (The narrator, Melanie Martin, is 11.) All these books make great gifts for tourists (and natives), and My New York provides lots of fun for detail-oriented kids who really love looking at picturebooks.

not my cup of tea.......2007-09-06
She feels it is the responsibility of you and I, through government (by paying enough taxes), to elliminate poor families in America. She writes that one should not feel 'entitled' to anything they didnt 'sweat' and 'work for'. Then says 'we' should 'give' to the poor instead of buying more things for ourselves.
I have to say, a lot of what she says, I agree with. But, I think it should predominantly be the place of individuals and churches, not the government, to bring aid and love to the poor. Communist and socialist governments have NOT proven their supperiority to capitalism. Why do you think people in communist and socialist countries keep trying to come to America?
This book seems to point the finger at the 'massa' letting down the poor. White men are said to be in a position of leadership out of 'accident of birth'. She tells us not to make, snicker, of stand for racial jokes. Then in the next chapter she tells one of her own in support of black pride.
She is not consistent or color blind. To ask it of others, when you yourself aren't doing it, makes for hypocracy.
I understand that whites, and specifically white men, have had priveledge in this society. Asian men are dominant in Asia, because that is the racial majority. It has been the same in America for quite some time. People tend to group together with those they feel are "like them."
But, to fault people that happen to be born in the majority and take a condescending or derogatory tone with them is the same racism, just directed at the majority. Because it has happened the other way around, doesnt make it right.
If you have a passion for the poor and oppressed and want a book that will give you some practical ways to change the world, read "Irrisistible Revolution", by Claiborne. He does make some similiar political comments and comments like we have enough "books written by white males", but this book is a lot more inspiring and thought-provoking. Claiborne focuses on community activism changing society, rather than the government changing people. A better road to hoe if you ask me
America's Leading Child Advocate Eloquently Sets Individual and Societal Goals.......2007-08-24
The author has written a book which combines traditional values with extraordinary wisdom and an eloquent statement of a needed American agenda to get children out of poverty. A black woman married to a somewhat prominent Jewish attorney (Peter Edelman) who has made his own impact on public policy, the author addresses this book to her three sons as they face growing up with the rare combination of being black, Jewish, and the sons of prominent people in the world of governmental policy-making.
The author protects her children's privacy, and gives us few personal anecdotes about them. She wants her children to successfully make their way in the world, and hopes that they will find the examples of their parents and grandparents to be inspiring and useful.
The heart of this book is the author's 25 lessons for life. It is a message of personal responsibility that the most hardened conservative would have problems disagreeeing with. But she breaks with conservatives in asking that the notion of personal responsibility cover responsibility for getting the government and other agents of society to take care of needy children even if their parents do not have the personal responsibility or the resources to do what they should do themselves.
Her 25 Lessons for Life are as follows: "(1) There is no free lunch. Don't feel entitled to anything you don't sweat and struggle for; (2) Set goals and work quietly and systematically toward them; (3) Assign yourself; (4) Never work just for money or for power. They won't save your soul or help you sleep at night; (5) Don't be afraid of taking risks or of being criticized; (6) Take parenting and family life seriously and insist that those you work for and who represent you do; (7) Remember that you wife is not your mother or your maid, but your partner and friend; (8) Forming families is serious business; (9)Be honest; (10)Remember and help America remember that the fellowship of human beings is more important than the fellowship of race and class and gender in a democratic society; (11) Don't confuse style with substance; (12) Never give up; (13) Be confident that you can make a difference; (14) Don't ever stop learning and improving your mind; (15) Don't be afraid of hard work or of teaching your children to work; (16) Slow down and live; (17) Choose your firends carefully; (18) Be a can-do, will-try person; (19) Try to live in the present; (20) Use your political and ecnomic power for the community and others less fortunate; (21) Listen for 'the sound of the genuine' within yourself and others; (22) You are in charge of your own attitude; (23) Remember your roots, your history, and the forbears' shoulders on which you stand; (24) Be reliable; Be faithful; finish what you start; (25) Always remember that you are never alone.
Each lesson is accompanied by an essay that places it in both personal and societal context. The lesson on being confident that you can make a difference, for instance, offers the personal advice not to get overwhelmed, to take each day and each task as they come, and to break all the tasks into manageable pieces of action while you still are striving to see the whole without thinking you need to win in order to make a difference.
The personal advice is followed by eloquent quotes from the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr ("Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope....by faith....by love....by...forgiveness") and Sojourner Truth, the ex-slave and abolitionist who urged her audiences to remember the bite of a flea and keep oppressors scratching.
"Remember it's sometimes important to lose for things that matter and that many fruits of your labor will not become manifest for many, many years, " the author says.
The author has an eye for eloquent quotes from people from Einstein to Eisenhower, but she herself is as eloquent as anyone she quotes. "Ironically," she writes, "as Communism is collapsing all around the world, the American Dream is collapsing all around America for millions of children, youths and families of all racial and income groups. American is pitted against American as economic uncertainty and downturn increase our fears, our business failures, our poverty rates, our racial divisions, and the dangers of political demagoguery.....
"All our children are growing up today in an ethically polluted nation where instant sex without responsibility, instant gratification without effort, instant solutions without sacrifice, getting rather than giving, and hoarding rather than sharing are the too-frequent signals of our mass media, business, and poltiical life....
"No parent can shut out completely the pollution of our airwaves and popular culture, which glorify excessive violence, profligate consumption, easy sex and greed, and depict deadly alcohol and tobacco products as fun, glamorous, and macho...
"{T)he standard for success for too many Americans has become personal greed rather than the common good, and as it has become enough to get by rather than do one's best.
"All our children are affected by escalating violdence fueled by unbridled trafficking in guns and in the drugs that are pervasive in suburb, rural area, and inner city alike.
"Young families of all races, on whom we count to raise healthy children for America's future, are in extraordinary trouble...."
Despite her passion, eloquence, and commitment, neither the author nor her causes have received enough attention from the federal government in the years since she wrote this book. This reviewer hopes that the author will be an active and influential voice in Washington if the Democrats win the Presidency in 2008.

This book changed my life.......2003-09-14
I cannot express in words the power of this wonderful book. I am an adult who was not raised with any values that could sustain me through all the messages of the outside world: Look beautiful, make money, drive fancy cars, clothes make the person; all the hype the media blasts at you everyday. I picked up this book and for the first time in my life, I felt grounded. I internalized the values in this book and for the first time in my life, I felt peace. All the distractions of the outside world could no longer effect me. The book changed my life.
A message we need to pass along to the next generation.......2001-12-21
Drawing from inspirational experiences from her own childhood, Dr. Edelman talks to (not at) her own children, urging them, in whatever occupation they may choose, to serve the community at large. This is also a book for adults (parents, educators, and religious and community leaders) to read, to live a life of principles and a desire to somehow make the world a better place - in short, to serve as the strong, positive role model that so many of our children have had to do without.
The book is also an indictment on how American society and political leadership do a great job at paying lip service to the needs of children but fails miserably in their actions. Complaining, however, is not enough; if children are to grow up to be conscientious and caring citizens, adults must set a good example.
It's a small book with a big heart and a great message. I strongly recommend it to anyone who cares about children and social justice in general.

Baby book.......2007-09-06
My new granddaughter is loving this book!! Very young yet... but never too young to start reading (or being read to).
Perfect 'Grandma' Gift Book.......2007-08-31
This book is precious. The words are the adorable expressions of love that parents and - especially - grandparents use when talking to infants and toddlers. The music is the perfect accompaniment. I have four young grandchildren. They have been enchanted as I've read and re-read this book to them.
This is the book I think is a 'must' to give a new parent and/or grandparent :)
Cute Cute Cute.......2007-07-17
I never get tired of reading this one to my 7 month old daughter. The rhymes are fun, the pictures are bright and colorful, the music and lights are neat and you can personalize it by putting the baby's picture in the back. I received as a gift from my mom and am now purchasing for other friends having babies.
Love It.......2007-06-08
This is my 7 month old daughter's favorite book. She will sit still, listen, grab and stare at the lights. I love the text and that she is hearing how special she is and how much her mommy loves her. This is our favorite of the "parent love letter books."
Wonderful music.......2007-05-20
My daughter loves this book, especially the music and lights. She will read this book over and over and it is often the first book she pulls from her bookshelf. The only downside is that the music doesn't last long enough to read the entire book. You have to close and reopen the book to continue reading in conjunction with the music. I would recommend this book to anyone with young kids and plan to purchase more of these for gifts.

Customer Reviews:
In love with a yak.......2007-04-05
This is an ingenious cross-over between a picture book and an easy reader. In my opinion, THERE'S A YAK IN MY BED! is destined to be a star. Pluta deftly spins an open-ended story filled with silliness, odd-ball humor, non-sequitors, and a complete lack of didacticism. It's absolutely everything a picture book should be.
To sweeten the deal, Pluta employs easy reader vocabulary and word count, so the book can pass through the years with a child from being a favorite read-aloud to becoming one of the first books the child can read on his or her own. Terrific!
Stallop's illustrations are vivid and active. The text is incorporated into the pictures, which makes for a super-fun read. Every illustration heightens the humor and underscores Pluta's characterizations. Stallop was a perfect match for this story.
This is the first Blooming Tree book I've seen in person, and the quality is superlative. It's well worth the price, especially since it does double-duty as a picture book and an easy reader.
I hope Blooming Tree gets this book into the hands of every reviewer they can. This Yak is going to fly!
Customer Reviews:
Love this book!!.......2007-09-27
I just love this book from the wonderful rhymes and rhythm to the wonderful music. Many books w/ music seem to have such an irritating mechanical sound, but my 2 year old daughter has even asked to have this turned on as her bedtime music. Also, my daughter is adopted and this book fits perfectly for an adopted child or a birth child. Heidi Weimer says what I feel about my daughter perfectly. I am now buying her book for a boy for my newly adopted son.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-04-07
Have a tissue handy because this book will make you cry. I love reading it to my son.
My heart swells.......2006-11-10
This book is absolutely wonderful! Everytime I hear the little "tune" being played when my son mashes it, it just reminds me over and over how much I love him and my heart just swells. He wants me to read this book to him over and over. He just turned 2 and has gotten into reading. We have the sister book for our daughter and she loves it too.
AWESOME for a keepsake book!!!!!!.......2006-08-11
I just purchased this book for our sons, Daniel 3 and James 1 as presents for their upcoming birthdays. It is a treasure and will be cherised for a very long time!!! It's a great book for the kids because it has a fun musical heart that plays a catchy tune when you press it as well as bright colorful pages and characters. It's wonderful for me as well because it's durable and sturdy for little hands. The language is great and is very meaningful but stated in simple terms. The store I purchased the books at didn't have the little girl version but it is available, thank goodness!! You won't be disappointed with this story and it will be cherised forever by children of all ages.
Another great book by Heidi Weimer.......2006-02-23
I received Heidi Weimer's first book "Your My Little Love Bug" as a gift for my son when he was 6 months old. He absolutely loves this book, so when I found another book by Weimer I couldn't wait to buy it. He loves pushing the Heart on the front of the book which makes the music play. I love how this book is personalized for a little boy. I have aslo purchased the girl version to give as gifts to friends that have girls. Awesome Book....a MUST have!

Children can open a miniature book and read lots of "B" words, pull open a colorful fan, pet a furry orangutan, turn the propeller of a helicopter, search for animals from A to Z in an enormous zoo, and much, much more!
Customer Reviews:
Our 1-year-old son LOVES this fun book!!!.......2007-04-02
I gave this book 4 stars, because, although it's a wonderful book that's really quite unique for all of its combined features, I do wish it were constructed even sturdier, a little less flimsy. This is a crazy busy book chock full of lift-up flaps, touch-and-feels, and movable parts. It's a pretty big book, measuring 9.25" W x 11.5" L, with pages made of cardboard (but not the superthick cardboard of typical board-books; the pages are firm but thin enough to bend, only the cover is thick hard cardboard. From our limited experience, it seems that the DK "my first" books are usually made of thicker harder cardboard and are better constructed than this Scholastic book, but DK doesn't have one like this - SO FULL of many different interactive features!) There are 10 total pages, or 5 full spreads, all filled to the brim with colorful drawings of different sizes.
The first page has things starting with the letters A-F; the interactive parts include an elephant with his head popping slightly out of the page, a little book with pages that turn, a fan that pulls down. The next page, G-L, has a helicopter with a rotating propeller, an invitation that opens up, and a leopard hiding behind a lift-the-flap bunch of leaves. You get the idea... Other features include a dragon with shiny scales, an orangutan with a furry touch-and-feel belly, a pop-up pyramid, a tiger hiding behind tall grass, a submarine that pulls up, a yo-yo that pulls down, etc. The final page ends with a giant pop-up zebra whose head literally jumps out of the page. There are lift-the-flaps and a string of hanging cards that show animals from A-to-Z. However, the zebra pop-up, although impressive, is too flimsy and not well-made at all - by simply opening the page to almost 180 degrees (just flat, not overbending it), I (NOT the baby!) caused the neck of the zebra to tear on one side. Since then, I've tried to be extra-careful with this page, but the other side of his neck is starting to tear too.
Nevertheless, it's still a great book and one of our favorites. DS gets sooo excited with it, and it is a fun way to start introducing the alphabet and teach first words. Fair warning to all parents though - this book is so "interactive" that the parts will bend or tear very easily for any child (or adult, as above...), so we only read it TOGETHER, and I have to keep a very close watch to keep him from pulling too hard!
Learning Letters.......2005-10-25
This book is really good but we like the Jumbo book of things that Go a little better.
Excellent Interactive Books.......2005-06-14
I have now purchased all of the books in this line for my 2 yr old son & they are all wonderful!! I have a vast book collection for my son & these are by far the most interactive!! Superbly done, the creativity put into these books is truly incredible. They are very sturdy books, so even the kids who like to rip & tear (my son) would have a hard time damaging these books. I highly recommend every title in this collection, Shapes, Numbers, Colors, Letters, Dinosaurs, Things That Go, & the Christmas book. You & your little one are sure to love them too!!
