As many as one in eight women have a thyroid condition. In Living Well with Hypothyroidism, Mary Shomon outlines the most common of these--too little thyroid hormones in the body. Weight gain, depression, fatigue, and what patients call "brain fog, Brillo hair, and prune skin" result. Because the symptoms of hypothyroidism mimic so many other conditions--chronic fatigue, PMS, clinical depression--it can be very tricky to diagnose, especially since patients with HMOs may not get the thorough testing they need.

Shomon knows of what she speaks: she's a health writer and thyroid patient herself. She also manages a thyroid Web site and writes a newsletter on hypothyroidism. In Living Well, she offers an extensively researched guide to this complex condition. She covers conventional, alternative, and late-breaking approaches to treatment--such as challenging the gold standard of Synthroid as the thyroid replacement therapy of choice. (Synthroid replaces T4, the less active of the two thyroid hormones, and Shomon features new research on adding T3--the more potent thyroid hormone--to treatment.)

With her down-to-earth, patient-centered approach, Shomon explains everything from how to choose a thyroid specialist to how calcium, antidepressants, and a high-fiber diet affect thyroid hormone absorption. The book includes a chapter on depression, which is a typical misdiagnosis of hypothyroidism--as well as a symptom that often persists even after treatment. She also covers infertility (women who are hypothyroid don't ovulate as regularly and miscarry more frequently) and thyroid cancer, one of the less common causes of hypothyroidism. She explains how to spot hypothyroidism in kids, and ends with a glossary, international resources, and journal references.

Shomon creates a sense of community by excerpting e-mails from her vast network of patients--voices that bring a sense of humor so often missing from health books. One quibble: she could have avoided the antidoctor stance in the beginning of her book, where she blames physicians, rather than incomplete science, for the misdiagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism. --Rebecca Taylor

4 out of 5 stars A must have.......2007-09-03

I think this book is great for patients that are undiagnosed. I suspected my sister was hypothyroid like I am but her doctor never tested and had her scheduled for a ton of specialists. I sent her this book and she had a diagnoses within the week. It helped her understand her test results and gave her the confidience to push for thorough testing. The symptom section is great. I prefer Ken Blanchard's book for understanding treatment options.

5 out of 5 stars Great Informational Book.......2007-08-09

I have had hypthryoidism now for 5 fives. This book is so informative. I have referred back to it a million times. The one thing I would like to stress is the fact that doctors only check TSH and/or T4. Somehow, this standard has to change. I asked my doctor to give me a complete test, he refused stating that I only need TSH/T4. Yet I have lost about 1/2 of my hair even though my TSH level is within "normal" limits. I am searching for another doctor who is alittle more open to different approaches. Thanks Mary for the insight!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-07-23

This is a book that every Hypothyroidism people should have. My suggestion is read this book first before you go to see a doctor. Knowledge you learn form this book will help you in many ways, and many years.

Was very excited to find a book, broken down for us patients whom have hypothyroidism. Not just for doctors only.I will use this for reference and questions for my doctor, from time to time.It helped me understand why things are happening to me.I thought it was part of getting old.Now I know better. And I know this is related to my fibromayalgia&vice versa. It is well worth the money to spend if you or a family member,or close friend has fibro or hypo.

Autoimmune diseases affect 50 million Americans, mostly women, who frequently remain undiagnosed and untreated, or are treated ineffectively. Living Well with Autoimmune Disease helps readers pinpoint symptoms, find the right practitioner, and learn cutting-edge approaches to reduce symptoms and reverse their disease.

Author Mary Shomon, who has the immune disease Hashimoto's thyroiditis, explains how the immune system is supposed to work, and what can go wrong. Then she discusses more than 20 specific autoimmune diseases--such as chronic fatigue syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, lupus, thyroid disease, Graves' disease, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, fibromyalgia, scleroderma, and multiple sclerosis. For each, she covers symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.

Shomon, a patient advocate and Web guide for people with thyroid disease, hears the most success stories from people who combine conventional treatment with complementary therapies, so she gives specific strategies for using herbs, diet, and mind/body therapies. She also includes a 30-page checklist of risk factors and symptoms (helpful when you have no idea what condition you might have), a guide to finding and working with the right practitioner, and an extensive resources section that includes patient support organizations, Web sites, and books. --Joan Price

Book Description

A complete guide to understanding the mysterious and often difficult–to–pinpoint disorders of the immune system––and finding the keys to diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.

An estimated fifty million people suffer from symptoms including fatigue, joint pains, depression, or heart palpitations 埳igns that the immune system has turned on itself, causing conditions such as thyroid disease, hepatitis, or multiple sclerosis. And while doctors may prescribe treatments to relieve these surface ailments, when asked about the life–long health implications of an autoimmune condition, they often just shrug their shoulders. Yet much like cancer, having one autoimmune disease puts you at high risk for developing another, and understanding the underlying immune process can reverse a patients approach to a dysfunction––for the author, it changed the way she ate, the vitamins and supplements she took, and the types of doctors she visited. Living Well with Autoimmune Disease is the first book that goes beyond the conventional treatments by showing you how to work on your underlying autoimmune dysfunction with natural and alternative therapies.

4 out of 5 stars Patient-friendly book.......2007-09-09

This is a very helpful book for the millions of people dealing with autoimmune diseases. Shomon does an excellent job of identifying the many different types of autoimmune diseases and their symptoms. She offers many traditional treatments as well as more holistic options. Most importantly, she lets you know that if you have one autoimmune disease, you have a much greater chance of contracting another. I learned far more from this book than I did at doctor appointments.

5 out of 5 stars This has been the best book I have read so far............2007-08-26

This was the most informative book that I have read. I have had fibromyalgia for several years and have had to learn on my own alot of the information that was contained in this one book...a must have for any new autoimmune sufferer.
GREAT READ ! GREAT INFO !

5 out of 5 stars Review of Living Well with Autoimmune Disease:What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You.......2007-06-13

This is a very informative book. It is well worth keeping on hand for referral. It describes many autoimmune diseases and tells, in many cases, how they are connected. It also tells, whenever possible, how these diseases may get started, what their symptoms are, and how they are treated. Since much of this information is very new to the general public, the book may be of great help to people searching for answers to their own medical problems.

2 out of 5 stars Lacking in Facts / Full of Myth.......2007-05-28

The reason the doctor doesn't tell you: it isn't true.
This book contains a lot of information for the average patient, and it SOUNDS logical. Unfortunately, only about half of it is based on science. In a world where those desparate for solutions are easy prey for snake-oil salesmen and fearmongers, this book leads right to them.

Most of the information of value in the book can be found in simple one-page summaries that many organizations provide (including the NIH and CDC). It lacks anything truly informative and the time reading it is wasted.

4 out of 5 stars Autoimmune Diseases.......2007-01-11

A good start for basic information on a wide variety of autoimmune diseases.

5 out of 5 stars Catamaran Racing Review.......2006-08-24

    Hi folks,

First of all I'll have to confess that I haven't read the whole book yet, but it's a must-own book for beach-cat sailors. This book is the closest you can come to the beac-cat sailors bible.

The book has covered such a great amount fo material in an easy and explaining way, with humour as a common agent. The don't's and musts of catamaran sailing is marked with fat types so you'll easy remember wath to do or what you must never do xD .

For crew the text is often sumed up so it's easy to scum the text.

I'll say, at the end, the book is worth every penny for experienced sailors as for newbeeies. Have fun :)

5 out of 5 stars Lots of help for any level of cat sailer.......2005-07-11

I got this book a week after I entered my first race. I had raced monohulls before but this was my first cat race. Lots of amazing tips for any level. Read this before your next race and you will be sure to pick off a few more compettitors..... I learned a lot and can use the tactics and techniques every time I go sailing wether I am racing or not. I would strongly recomend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very good low-mid to Upper mid level racing training.......2003-06-12

Rick White is the master of communicating how to sail a catamaran. This book mirrors his seminars and videos. I think the video series might even be an even better starting point for most catamaran sailors because much of book is about how-to activities that should be visualized and practiced.

4 out of 5 stars Quality, but not quite cutting edge.......2002-04-20

A very well rounded book that covers the fundamentals, as well as specific hints on the various boats out there (Prindle, Nacra, Hobie, etc.). While it is not designed to be a "cheat sheet" on going fast, there are a few things I re-read - namely off-wind tactics. Due to the inherent differences between Cats and monos, there are a few things I needed to un-learn to get faster. I'm no Worrell 1000 winner, but this book has moved me from the "How do they get so far ahead?" to "nipping at their heels". And it has certainly helped fill the trophy case..

The section on spinnakers is a little weak, but still will get you going downwind fast.

All in all, this book will teach the intermediate sailor (or advanced sailor with little cat experience) enough to stay within sight of the pack leaders. The rest you'll have to learn from those guys. Tuning your rig/tactics/crew is what wins races, and these are so varied that it's actually better that the book doesn't cover this - so not as to confuse sailors too much.

SPECIAL NOTE: Due to the publishing date, this book is sadly lax in it's instruction on several newer boats - namely the I-20, F-18 class, Hobie Tiger/Fox. Several new ideas have emerged that seem to work, but you'll have to learn that on your own out on the course! ;-)

5 out of 5 stars The best and most readable reference on catamaran sailing.......1999-02-06

I find myself reviewing this book before I hit the water. After I return from the day's sailing I refer to it again to try and understand how I can improve on what I done that day. Rick White and Mary Wells have the ability to clearly explain the basics of boat handing and racing tactics in readable and direct language. The book is not afraid of stating an opinion where there are several points of views. It also discusses these views. I recommend this book to anyone at any level of catmaran sailing.

    Book Description

There are an estimated 3 million–plus Americans suffering from Graves' disease and hyperthyroidism, and patient advocate Mary J. Shomon will guide them through the diagnosis and the wide–ranging treatments available. Graves' disease and hyperthyroidism are the result of the thyroid gland being overactive. This gland controls the body's metabolism, so people afflicted with the disorder can suffer from symptoms such as significant weight loss, fatigue, muscular weakness, and rapid heartbeat, among others. In addition to conventional treatments, this resource uniquely highlights holistic treatments, and through case studies and testimonials from patients and doctors, presents an honest look at the lifestyles and choices of people living with these conditions.

Shomon presents the reader with a comprehensive resource that spans from diagnosis to treatment to life after treatment. She goes beyond the conventional advice of other books, utilizing patient anecdotes and, as a fellow thyroid disease patient, her own experience. Her extensive network of experts––from conventional physicians to alternative practitioners––allows for a wide range of treatment options. In addition, a comprehensive Appendix serves as a fantastic resource for patients seeking treatment and additional advice.

    4 out of 5 stars Helpful information.......2007-08-31

I found Mary Shomon's book to be very helpful in trying to understand Graves' Disease and hyperthyroidism. The book is written in easy to understand terms, and is a wealth of information when faced with diagnosis and treatment options. It is a comprehensive resource for thyroid patients.

    3 out of 5 stars Informative, but..........2007-03-27

I found an error in this book which makes me a little nervous about it's editing if not the entire content. On one page it specifically says that bugleweed is NOT indicated for hyperthyroidism when in fact it is one of the FEW alternative remedies that works for hyper's versus hypo's. I bought this book because of the lack of coverage for people with hyperactive thyroid so this was very annoying.

Other than that, most of this info is available on the internet free of charge.

5 out of 5 stars Living well with graves disease and hyperthyroidism.......2007-01-21

This is an excellent book. Mary Shoman is an expert in her field!!

1 out of 5 stars Not Helpful at all.......2006-10-16

I found this book not very helpful at all. There is general information but if you are looking for insights into treatment, they aren't here. Writer is anti-RAI which is fine if your symptons aren't very severe but if they are, this book won't help.

    2 out of 5 stars Promises, promises............2006-08-03

Same old information that is available everywhere, and a lot more on HypOthyroidism than I expected to encounter. The title seems to promise some hints for the often troublesome aspects of the disease, perhaps information the author might have gleaned from patients who had learned to cope. Unfortunately this promise is not fulfilled. I learned nothing new, and most of the areas of interest to me did not offer any solutions to "living well." A waste of $.

The distinguishing feature of the murders is that they are "trailed" in a series of emails to the LA Times ,and signed "Mary ".Alex falls foul of the local law who resent his incursion into their case and the conflict intensifies when they claim to have apprehended the killer ,a deeply troubled and somewhat pathetic woman .whose viewpoint forms the background to a number of chapters .Alex is unpersuaded by their case and sets about unmasking the real killer

The customary short chapters heavy on dialogue are well in evidence but there is a greater depth of characterisation and a sense of sadness haunts the figure of the troubled Mary Constantine which goes to making her fate very moving and saddening .It has -in short -a warmth and compassion to add to the customary skill in story telling and narrative grip wjhich asre the Patterson hallmarks

This is well worth your time and trouble to read

3 out of 5 stars Easy To Listen To.......2007-08-19

The actors are great which has a significant effect upon the entertainment level of the story. This is a typical Patterson book- short chapters and a surprize villian (you won't be able to guess who it is because Patterson never leaves any clues). I still liked it. The story moves fast. A Patterson audio book is always good to listen to while cleaning the house.

1 out of 5 stars How did this guy get a book contract?.......2007-08-11

I believe I might have read a James Patterson novel years ago, but I must have blocked out how bad it was out of self-protection. Well, I just checked out Mary Mary from the library and am appalled by how sub-par the writing is. And don't even get me started on the short chapters. Does Patterson have any attention span at all? I am no longer surprised by how he manages to crank out so many novels. Just limit the length of your sentences to no more than ten words and use as many cliches as possible, and viola!

I managed to get only 40 pages into the book. After two murders and one painfully bad love scene, I just cannot continue. To quote Cross himself (at Chapter 11, the point at which I threw the book across the room), "This sucked in a way that broke new territory."

5 out of 5 stars Lots of twists and turns with surprise ending........2007-08-06

I give this a high rating as an audio book that will keep your attention, not distract you from driving, and isn't overly long. Lots of twists and turns and a surprise ending. I loaned it to several friends for their road trips and they thought it was great too.

5 out of 5 stars The Miracle of Life!.......2007-10-21

THIS IS A MUST FOR ALL CHRISTIAN MOM'S TO BE!! I found this book for myself at a thrift store before I was even pregnant! I was so excited about having this journal during pregnancy! Now this is the gift I always like to give friends when they first find out they are pregnant.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, unique book.......2002-12-27

My mom gave me this book recently to celebrate my pregnancy with her first grandchild. I love reading about my baby's development each week, and it's wonderful to have a weekly page to write my thoughts, feelings, or prayers. The pictures are breathtaking, and the scripture quotes and prayers are perfect. This book is even more special to us because Dr. Wells is the obstetrician who delivered me 25 years ago! :)

5 out of 5 stars Love this book.......2000-07-31

This book was given to me as a gift when I was pregnant with my first child. It is a beautifully written book that will inspire any mother-to-be. The prayers and quotes in the book are wonderful meditations for expectant moms. The photos are amazing. They let you see in utero what the baby looks like during it's development at many different stages. The journal pages allow you to record your thoughts and feelings about your pregnancy each week. This is a must have book for any expectant mom. It makes a great gift!

5 out of 5 stars A loving, thoughtprovoking way to wait for your baby's birth.......1998-10-11

I throughly am appreciating this book as I wait for my child to be born. The photos are beautiful and help me visualize my child growing daily. Each week's fetal development is wonderfully described through combining the actual anatomical facts with an acknowledgment of God's hand in this amazing process. The prayer each week touches my heart. This book helps me slow down for just a moment to hear God's Spirit working to ready my life for my child. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is at all amazed by this miracle of life: growing a baby within her womb.

    Book Description

From the author of Living Well With Hypothyroidism, a comprehensive guide to the diagnosis and treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia––vital help for the millions of people suffering from pain, fatigue, and sleep problems.

Recent studies indicate that 3 to 6 million Americans suffer from fibromyalgia––a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points. This terrible condition is often accompanied by chronic fatigue syndrome, a persistent and debilitating sense of exhaustion that is estimated to affect 800,000 Americans––twice the number of people with multiple sclerosis. Yet there are no official blood tests of diagnostic procedures that can confirm that yes, you definitely have these conditions, and in fact, a whole segment of the medical world doesn't even believe these two diseases actually exist. In addition, the few books that are on the market tend to focus on single solutions or eschew conventional and pharmaceutical approaches, which could alienate readers who use conventional medicine in whole or part. In her trademark accessible, easy–to–follow style, patient advocate Mary J. Shomon integrates the latest findings regarding these misunderstood conditions. Highlighting the pros and cons of the antibiotic, metabolic/endocrine, hormonal, musculoskeletal, and many other approaches to treatment, Shomon explores the fads and viable alternatives––both conventional and alternative––and provides helpful, clear solutions to help sufferers of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

At various points since 1995, Mary J. Shomon has been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Since then, she has transformed her health challenges into a mission as a nationally–known patient advocate. She has worked for more than 20 years in writing, advertising, public relations, and communications and is the founder and editor–in–chief of several thyroid, autoimmune, and nutrition newsletters, as well as the internet's most popular thyroid disease website, www.thyroid–info.com.

    1 out of 5 stars not helpful.......2007-08-28

I don't believe in writing negative reviews unless they're really useful. I ordered this book based on all the good things I'd read about it. As I read it I wondered if these reviewers had read the same book! It's a dense and not terribly readable listing of all the readily researched material on CFS and fibromyalgia. Nothing in it is helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Living Well with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia.......2007-04-16

This was the first book I read when I became ill with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in Sept. 2004, and it provided me with eye-opening insights into my disorder as well as sobering, but realistic expectations of the difficulties involved in the healing process. Additionally, it outlines the dysfunctions involved in this disorder as well as how to treat and cope with these.
Overall, I found the book to be a rich and helpful source of information for anyone suffering from this condition.
I would suggest complementing this book with others, however, as it isn't an all-inclusive source of information on CFIDS. Additionally, research has taught me that CFIDS/Fibromyalgia aren't conditions in and of themselves, but often manifestations of other illnesses, including Lyme Disease. For treatment of either condition to be effective, possibilities of other illnesses should be investigated and ruled out.
Finally, this book, as most others dealing with CFIDS, did not deal much with past emotional trauma and how this can be stored in the body and manifest as physical illness. For anyone who suspects that this factor has played a role in the development of his/her illness, finding information that deals with this aspect of healing is absolutely vital for recovery.

2 out of 5 stars there are better books out there.......2006-08-04

This book seems to be cobbled together from Teitelbaum and various Web sites. It's broad and superficial. Major issues, such as the treatment of hormonal imbalances, are glossed over with a couple of sentences. Worst of all, she describes the relationship between depression and CFIDS and FMS as a "chicken-egg" thing--everyone who gets these was already depressed. There's no evidence whatsoever for this assertion, and saying it in a book damages advocacy and holds us back much in the same way as the dreaded moniker CFS.

2 out of 5 stars Ask your doctor, not Ms. Shomon.......2005-08-14

While Ms Shomon's book quotes several CFS doctors, she relies mainly on Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum's advice which includes a barrage of vitamins. His book is titled "From Fatigued to Fantastic" and he wrote the introduction to Ms. Shomon's. It bothers me that Ms. Shomon presents many alternative therapies that are highly suspect and cost prohibitive for the most of us. However, she speaks from experience having suffered from CFS. It bothers me that she does not mention Kutapressin, an amino acid injection that my doctor and many others in the field use.

    2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2005-06-09

The author presents the reader with an Aladdin's Cave of information. However, with only a cursery attempt at analysing the growing body of evidence as to the aetology and pathophysiology of these illnesses, newcomers to FM/CFS are left to determine that which is credible for themselves. With the gathering mountain of clinical and scientific understanding of FM/CFS now available it is disappointing that a book of this recency hasn't taken a more considered and focused approach. Veterans of FM/CFS will be disappointed; newcomers will struggle to determine the wood from the trees.

This book will help you understand why your dog is misbehaving, but it doesn't reallt provide enough info to help you correct the behavior.

    5 out of 5 stars Required reading.......2006-11-07

Dog Speak is a must read for anyone who has a dog or loves dogs. This book is animated with the words that lead to solutions for every behavior problem imaginable. It is easy to read that will turn you into the "adoring master" your pet yearns for. Why? Because it teaches you how to interpret your dog's feelings, by understanding his or her verbal and non-verbal cues. Once you understand the pattern you can establish the rules of behaviors that are acceptable and those which are not. I would classify this book as the "bible of behavior" when it comes to communicating with "our four legged best friend". It certainly holds a prominent place on my book shelf

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!.......2006-10-24

When all else failed this book helped my family embrace our wonderful puppy and grow together as a pack. We now understand our dog better and can communicate more clearly with him. Bash's techniques are easy to implement, require no physical discipline and are the optimal solution for making your dog a better citizen both in your home and in public. Understanding the way dogs think, implementing these simple training techniques, and plenty of love is all a person needs to raise a wonderful dog. I highly recommend this book to dog owners new and old, especially those families with young children. Thanks Bash!

As always, Bash doesnt disappoint;like his other books this one is well thought out, informative and easy to read! Bash makes it easy to understand his philosophy and have fun reading at the same time.

This book should be on every dog owner's shelf! Bash has a deep understanding of all species of dogs, having trained first hand so many different kinds, not to mention his experiences with training wolves.
