    Product Description

Long before Hank Greenberg earned recognition as baseball's greatest Jewish player, Jews had developed a unique, and very close, relationship with the American pastime. In the late nineteenth century, as both the American Jewish population and baseball's popularity grew rapidly, baseball became an avenue by which Jewish immigrants could assimilate into American culture. Beyond the men (and, later, women) on the field, in the dugout, and at the front office, the Jewish community produced a huge base of fans and students of the game. This important book examines the interrelated histories of baseball and American Jews to 1948-the year Israel was established, the first full season that both major leagues were integrated, and the summer that Hank Greenberg retired. Covered are the many players, from Pike to Greenberg, as well as the managers, owners, executives, writers, statisticians, manufacturers and others who helped forge a bond between baseball and an emerging Jewish culture in America. Key reasons for baseball's early appeal to Jews are examined, including cultural assimilation, rebellion against perceived Old World sensibilities, and intellectual and philosophical ties to existing Jewish traditions. The authors also clearly demonstrate how both Jews and baseball have benefited from their relationship.

For me, this encyclopedia of Jewish athletes (complete with photos) offered encouragement in the field of athletics, and I think this can be a very empowering book for aspiring Jewish athletes in any sport. It's fun to flip each page and learn about another exciting career!

      Book Description

tough kid with a heart of gold, Bummy grew up in the streets of Brownsville, New York on the fringes of the Jewish mob during the 20's and 30's-thanks to his older brother, a feared racketeer. But as much as he resisted the underworld of Murder, Inc. by becoming a championship fighter and a Browns-ville hero, he never did escape the Jewish mob's shadow. Though he repeatedly stood up to mob kingpins like Abe Reles, Bummy suffered a spectacular fall from grace as a result of a smear campaign by the press. Capturing a unique place and time in history, Bummy Davis vs. Murder, Inc. redeems a tragic hero who fought the pull of one of the most brutal groups of killers to grace the twentieth century.

      5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-03-30

For anyone who loves a good story, written with wit, humor, and style, this book is for you. I couldn't put it down, and found something to chuckle about or a phrase to admire or an ironic comment I loved at least once on each page. I finished the book today (March 29, 2007)and did something I never did before (and I am 80 year's old). I noted from the book jacket that the author divides his time between Oceanside, LI and Boca Raton, Fl, and even though it is 4 years since the book was written and the author's name is a relatively common one, I called information for his Boca Raton number and took a chance that it was the right Ron Ross. I left a message that if this Ron Ross was an author, would he please call me, and I left my number. A few hours later I received a call from Mr. Ross and we had a delightful conversation for 10 minutes or so. For me to have taken the time to locate Mr. Ross and call him is an example that actions speak louder than words. Believe my action and go out and buy, read, enjoy, and love the book. It's cheap enough, and you'll thank me, and more so, will thank Ron Ross.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece About One Tough Jew.......2005-10-14

Ron Ross masterfully recreates the world of the "Brownsville Bum"-which is how WC Heinz referred to Albert Davidoff in his
well known sports story.Ross takes Bummy-who Ring Magazine rated 54th of boxing's 100 best lb. for lb. punchers of all time-to
the next level,in quite possibly the best "factional novel" ever
      written-at least about boxing,gangsters and Brownsville,Brooklyn
in a world that dramatically changed in 1945,when Bummy's life ended trying to prevent a bar holdup with his fists. And Davis
also didn't take any crap from Murder Incorporated either;Ross
beautifully recreates the scene in which the leaders of Murder
Inc. drive up to Davis after a fight they lost money on-and Davis drops his gym bag, ready to kayo all of them in the street;this showdown finally gave people the courage to testify against Murder Incorporated in court. The final bar showdown-if this gets to the movies-could be the best final showdown in movie history;I'm looking forward to it.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Read; Americana at its Best.......2004-06-23

An enjoyable and engrossing examination of a unique confluence of time, place, and people ... Eastern European Jewish immigrants, their first-generation-American children, the Great Depression, Brownsville NY, and the crime Syndicate born of Prohibition.

Ron Ross recreates a world of candy stores, pushcart vendors, tenement apartments, petty thugs, corner gyms, notorious gangsters, and the struggle for life and dignity admist poverty, crime, and prejudice. Vivid, colorful, and often humorous, it's also grim, unblinking, and heart rending.

A great book for students of Jewish-American history, for boxing enthusiasts, for organized crime buffs, and for those who simply appreciate a great story.

      4 out of 5 stars All*Star Season.......2007-08-06

A well-written novel for pre-teens, this is the story of two brothers whose first love is baseball, and their attempts to excel in the game. In addition, it is a coming-of-age saga of brothers reconciling themselves to working together as a team, while in competition with each other. Reuven is in ninth grade. He is organized, competent, an excellent student, and very shy. He is focused on becoming an even better pitcher than he already is. He is willing to go against his father's advice not to practice new strategies in the journey to improve his game. Younger brother Avi is in eighth grade, and is an outstanding catcher who has a more happy-go-lucky personality than his brother. For example, he often leaves his schoolwork until the last moment. Both characters are well developed and believable. Each brother has many strengths, but the differences between them, in addition to the zeal they bring to playing baseball, make for an intense sibling experience. There is a tremendous amount of jealousy between the two as they each excel in different areas. Reuven and Avi are part of a close and loving family. Both parents assist and guide the boys through their challenges and their lives. Their father, in addition, acts as their regular baseball coach on Sunday mornings. The family is Orthodox, and the brothers attend a day school for boys. Because of their religious commitments they are forced to miss three games held on the Sabbath during the season. This is an issue of great concern to each boy, as each carries the dream of being picked to be in the All-Stars game at season's end. The family's Orthodoxy is an interesting subplot that does not interfere with the non-Orthodox reader's enjoyment of the sports theme, but another sub-plot involving a relationship Reuven has with a baseball-loving young woman is not very realistic. This book, while in manuscript form, was the winner of the Association of Jewish Libraries' Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award for best unpublished children's book of Judaic interest. Ages 9 and up.

      5 out of 5 stars A definite page-turner!.......2007-03-29

I loved this book! As a middle school librarian, I am thrilled to have an exceptionally well-written, heart-warming baseball story that has appealed to both boys and girls at my school. There's lots of baseball certainly, and sibling issues are dealt with as well since the main character plays on the same team as his brother. This was a wonderful realistic story - I read it in one sitting!

      Book Description

From the beginning, Jews have played a prominent role in our national pastime, the game of baseball, but have often been ignored. This is the first baseball encyclopedia dedicated to naming and honoring every Jewish contributor. These often remarkable stories ensure they will no longer be forgotten.

The Big Book of Jewish Baseball covers everything, from tragic moments such as Herb Gorman dying on the ball field, and Erskine Meyer quitting the sport after finding out about his teammates (on the 1919 White Sox) taking bribes, to happier occasions such as Koufax's perfect game as well as Larry Sherry successfully concluding every Dodger victory of the 1959 World Series.

Jews who impacted upon the great American pastime extend far beyond the record homeruns and strikeouts of the legendary slugger "Hammerin' Hank" Greenberg and pitching ace Sandy Koufax. There are scores of lesser known ballplayers like Lipman Pike (the first professional Jewish player), Cal Abrams (who shielded Jackie Robinson with his body), and Ron Blomberg (who stood in as the very first Designated Hitter), whose baseball stories will touch or amuse readers of any background.

The Big Book of Jewish Baseball explores all facets of baseball, including: Minor League players, Umpires, Jewish League Officials and Club Executives. It even includes a 2001 Major League update, as well as 200 B&W photographs. This book is a must for anyone interested in the game.

Also included are full player stats, unusual memorabilia, exclusive original interviews, and rare photos of players on & off the field.

This one-of-a-kind book will be much appreciated by both baseball aficionados as well as readers of popular Judaica. In addition, the authors convey so much about the lives of the players, not just their baseball careers, some great transcendent moments both in baseball and American history come alive for readers.

        Book Description

Although the study of Jewish identity has generated a growing body of work, the topic of sport has received scant attention in Jewish historiography. Emancipation through Muscles redresses this balance by analyzing the pertinence of sports to such issues as race, ethnicity, and gender in Jewish history and by examining the role of modern sport within European Jewry.

The accomplishments of Jews in the intellectual arena and their notable presence among Nobel Prize recipients have often overshadowed their achievements in sports. The pursuit of sports among Jews in Europe was never a marginal phenomenon, however. In the first third of the twentieth century numerous Jewish sport organizations were founded throughout Europe, and prowess in the realm called “muscle Jewry” by the Zionists was a symbol of widespread pride among European Jews. Some Jewish teams were remarkably successful: the legendary Austrian soccer champion Hakoah Vienna was arguably the most visible Jewish presence in interwar Vienna, and many readers will be surprised to learn that outstanding soccer teams such as Ajax Amsterdam and Tottenham Hotspur are still considered “Jewish teams.”

The contributors to this volume, an international group of scholars from a variety of fields, explore the diverse relationships between Jews and modern sports in Europe.

          Book Description

Judaism's Encounter with American Sports examines how sports entered the lives of American Jewish men and women and how the secular values of sports threatened religious identification and observance. What do Jews do when a society—in this case, a team—"chooses them in," but demands commitments that clash with ancestral ties and practices?

Jeffrey S. Gurock uses the experience of sports to illuminate an important mode of modern Jewish religious conflict and accommodation to America. He considers the defensive strategies American Jewish leaders have employed in response to sports' challenges to identity, such as using temple and synagogue centers, complete with gymnasiums and swimming pools, to attract the athletically inclined to Jewish life. Within the suburban frontiers of post-World War II America, sports-minded modern Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform rabbis competed against one another for the allegiances of Jewish athletes and all other Americanized Jews. In the present day, tensions among Jewish movements are still played out in the sports arena.

Today, in a mostly accepting American society, it is easy for sports-minded Jews to assimilate completely, losing all regard for Jewish ties. At the same time, a very tolerant America has enabled Jews to succeed in the sports world, while keeping faith with Jewish traditions. Gurock foregrounds his engaging book against his own experiences as a basketball player, coach, and marathon runner. By using the metaphor of sports, Judaism's Encounter with American Sports underscores the basic religious dilemmas of our day.

          5 out of 5 stars Valuable .......2005-05-10

This book has a valuable introduction tracing the development of Jewish participation in sport in the modern era. It also contains 'portraits' of individual Jewish athletes of distinction. It is a valuable resource .
However when one wishes to inspire the younger generation it is helpful to tell stories of the struggles individuals made to make their way . But perhaps for that , another volume is necessary.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Legends.......2001-04-12

The International Jewish Hall of Fame has plenty of reasons to be proud - and most are listed in this book. Not meant to be a complete biography, it gives sample snapshots of these legendary athletes, coaches and sportswriters. Obviously there is a rich and deep heritage in the Jewish community and this books fosters that well.

          1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-03-22

One or two paragraphs each containing stats and awards. I was expecting more fleshed out biographies, perhaps outlining any adversities these folks had to endure, Jewish or otherwise. No or almost no personal information.
