Book Description

This latest edition of Investments continues the legacy of excellence established in previous versions. Chapters on behavioral finance, arbitrage pricing theory, multifactor models of risk and return, and international diversification have been dramatically rewritten to meet changes in today’s transformed markets. In addition, unnecessary mathematical and technical detail continues to be left out wherever possible.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars No concepts.......2007-05-31

After reading most of the book, my conclusion was that I definitely needed to find better material in order to REALLY understand Investment theory. I found the book to be unnecessarily wordy, often repetitive, and yet very unclear about the basic conceptual ideas behind the theory.

Most of the problems stem from the fact that the mathematics used is very simple, and that no effort is made to focus on ideas. Instead of presenting the CAPM and APT models by formally setting the framework, stating the assumptions, introducing proper mathematical tools to tackle the development, and coming back to highlight key concepts, the book tries to circumvent any slightly difficult area by providing an endless string of confused explanations.

I guess this might be OK if you are seeking a very basic introduction to the topic but even then, I am not sure that a 700+ pages book of muddled diatribes is what you need.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic textbook.......2007-01-06

really enjoyed this one. the writing is clear, simple and concise. the examples are derived from the text, build on the fundamentals, and strengthen overall concept comprehension. too often texts end up reading like the authors wanted to impress you with how intelligent they are, at the expense of actually effectively presenting the material. this is definitely not the case here, as the information is presented in a compelling and incredibly lucid way.

3 out of 5 stars 4th edition.......2006-06-24

This book is well organized, but you better have a solid calc and stats theory background. The newest edition has more chapters. Book is more wordy than concise.

Great book! It's comprehensive and easy to understand. Highly recommended textbook.

This is the tome used in top MBA programs across the US.

It's comprehensive and filled with "extras" like website recs and sample CFA questons.

Everything you need to know is here.

2 thumbs up.

Book Description

Bodie, Kane, and Marcus’ Investments is the leading textbook for the graduate/MBA investments market. It is recognized as the best blend of practical and theoretical coverage, while maintaining an appropriate rigor and clear writing style. Its unifying theme is that security markets are nearly efficient, meaning that most securities are usually priced appropriately given their risk and return attributes. The text places greater emphasis on asset allocation, and offers a much broader and deeper treatment of futures, options, and other derivative security markets than most investment texts.

As an investment banking analyst and proprietary investor for Wall Street's two most prestigious firms, I would like to attest to the firm economic underpinnings of this book. It is refreshing to see a chapter devoted to criticisms of the efficient market hypothesis, though a further discussion of behavioral finance would be greatly welcomed. This book is concise and provides a good balance of theory and practical knowledge.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for begineers.......2007-05-10

For someone who is new to world of finance, this is best book I have come across which is easy to read and covers details of investment. I like the layout of chapters and most of basic chapters are followed by more advance concepts in next chapter.

1 out of 5 stars If you'd like a serious headache, buy this book........2006-10-05

I made the mistake of choosing this book as this text for an undergraduate finance course because it is used by the New York Society of Financial Analysts in their portfolio management class. Don't make the same mistake!! Part One is very informative and gives the reader practical information and advice. The rest of the book is terrible. The equity section concentrates on Modern Portfolio Theory--the Efficient Fronter, co-variation, efficient markets, blah, blah, blah. While Value Investing is mentioned (barely), it is almost an afterthought and it's certainly frowned upon. I wonder how poor investors like Warren Buffet and Seth Klarman have made any money at all using the Value Investing approach. I found the section on bonds and fixed income portfolio management interesting but difficult to follow. I traded corporate and municipal bonds for 20 years. If I had not had such a background, I would have been totally confused. If you are a quantitative GENIUS, this book MAY help you. If you are not, you can choose another book and learn much more.

1 out of 5 stars Poor.......2006-06-16

This is a poorly written finance text. It is not organized and unclear in some sections. I have a degree in Finance, and I would never recommend this book to anyone.

1 out of 5 stars Knowing your subject and knowing how to teach it are different things.......2006-05-21

The authors no doubt know Investment analysis. Unfortunately they don't communicate that information too well. Frequently happens when Phd's forget they are writing to students, not other Phd's. Bought this book for a senior level finance course, required to complete my major in finance.
Even my Prof. started the course with, "the textbook is difficult to read but just follow my notes and you should do ok". Not too good of an endorsement for a textbook. Now, after completing the course, I am searching for another text on the subject to keep as a reference. Even after the lectures, this book's explinations of the same topics are difficult to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction.......2006-05-13

Bodie's "Essentials of Investments" sevres as helpful, comprehensive introduction to investments. This book is modeled on Bodie's larger graduate text "Investments" leaving out only the sections on Equilibrium in Capital Markets and skimping on some of the finer mathematical details within the other sections. You will prefer this book if you are just beginning in the field, and you will not be disappointed with what you learn. The book is an easy and engaging read if you are an "intelligent layman", and it is certainly feasable even if you have a limited general education background. Overall, great introduction to the investment field. Recommended.

Book Description

Students, professors and general readers alike have relied upon the Oxford Annotated Bible for essential scholarship and guidance to the world of the Bible for four decades. Now a new editorial board and team of contributors have completely updated this classic work. The result is a volume which maintains and extends the excellence the Annotated's users have come to expect, bringing new insights, information, and approaches to bear upon the understanding of the text of the Bible. The new edition includes a full index to all of the study material (not just to the annotations), and one that is keyed to page numbers, not to citations. And, to make certain points in the text clearer for the reader, there are approximately 40 in-text, line drawing maps and diagrams. With the best of the Annotated's traditional strengths, and the augmentation of new information and new approaches represented in current scholarship, the Third Edition will continue to serve as the reader's and student's constant resource.

3 out of 5 stars Too, too scholarly. Not for lay study!.......2007-09-12

`The New Oxford Annotated Bible' of the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) translation, with the Apocrypha, was my first, entirely uncritical choice for a study Bible when I began teaching an adult Bible Study class. I have no trouble with the translation, as it is the translation of choice for most American Lutherans, so I accept that.
What I discovered, as I discover with so many other books with the `Oxford' imprimatur, is that while the volume is sound, it is not always the best in the field. When I started looking at other study bibles, I was skeptical of the fancy multicolored sidebars, section headings, and marginalia. Now, I'm not so sure these are such a `bad' thing, even if they don't shout `scholarship'.
The `New Oxford...' certainly shouts scholarship in its copious footnotes to the way in which certain terms have been translated by the NRSV scholars. This was how I discovered that the NRSV is a `politically correct' translation in that it changes all masculine references to terms combining genders (`we' or `men and women' in place of `he' or `man'). This is annoying, as it makes it a less satisfactory translation for scholarship, but, knowing is better than not knowing.
The volume also has superb maps. For these alone the book may be worth owning, as so many other Bible Study maps are inaccurate or lacking in detail. These are combined political and topographical maps for all major periods of Biblical history, such as Canaan in the time of Abraham to Moses, Sinai during the Exodus, Israel in Canaan, and so on. My only complaint is that most maps span two pages, and since the pages are sewn into signatures, scanning or photocopying a good image of the maps is very difficult. Even better is the index to the maps. There are also black and white political maps scattered throughout the text, but these are probably far less useful. It would have been better to gather these all in one place, but that's me. I must say that there is an index to all these maps in the text, so some forgiveness is in order.
From there, things tend to fall off a bit. The volume ends with a series of essays, tables, and a short concordance. This last item seems to me to be quite a waste of space, as it takes up 63 pages, while Strong's Concordance fills over 1800 pages. I suspect Oxford left something out! In fact, my favorite test case, a search for `olive tree', as it appears, for example, in Paul's letter to the Romans, is not to be found. While Oxford has three references to `olive', Strong has 37! The essays I find are sound, but really too short for anything but a quick introduction to their material. Especially noisome is the fact that the essay authors give no bibliography attached to the end of their essays. I did find the table of parallel texts very useful, especially those covering the Old Testament. The parallels of the Synoptic gospels are familiar enough, but the multiple occurrences of, for example, the description of the fall of Jerusalem in Jeremiah and 2 Kings is useful. I did find the chronological table of rulers a useful aide de memoir, although it would have been even more useful to express these genealogically. I seem to recall that Herod the Great, the first of his dynasty, was married to some cousin from the Hasmonean line of rulers. My primary objection to the volume is the dry and uninteresting layout of the scriptures themselves. I get practically no value from the footnoted material, as there is no flag in the text to bring your eyes down to the footnotes. There is also nothing to relieve us of the tedium of verse after verse of small Times New Roman typescript. It uses the method of very subtle verse numbers, to less interfere with the flow of the text, but I'm not so sure I like that, especially when I'm trying to find a verse.
I regret that I can't compare this to another study bible, as I have just started looking at others, thereby having the scales fall from my eyes regarding the value of the Oxford. Stay tuned for more, as I find better guides. I have heard, if you can get your hands on a copy, that the Harper Collins Study Bible, edited by Wayne Meeks, is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Best Bible EVER.......2007-08-24

This is the best Bible I've ever bought. The NRSV is an excellent, easy to read, yet still scholorly translation of the Bible, and the Oxford Annotated Bible is excellent for the common reader and for the university student. Much less like a "study bible" than the 2nd edition, and much more like something I would analyze the bible with.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Edition for Study.......2007-07-29

This book is fantastic and totally informative. From the footnoted annotations filled with historical and interpretive information for all passages, to the linguistic orgin of the translations of each word, this bible is truly a key to grasping a historical version of Christianity.

Also this ecumenical is truly geared for all denominations to learn more about the holistic version of Christianity.

2 out of 5 stars Pass this up.......2007-07-09

Look at other study Bibles like the Concordia Self-Study Bible, before you get this one. It is very limited in notes and is not a study bible at all. I own one and with so many other better choices out there I cannot understand why anyone would bother with this.

2 out of 5 stars not what I expected.......2007-06-13

I was looking forward to using this new Bible for study and for prayer. I was not aware that Apocrypha was not included. No where in the ad was it mentioned that this bible did not include this element of the New Revised Standard Version. I will be able to use this Bible for some of my study program but I had to buy another Bible that included the Apocrypha to assist my prayer life.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars *Probably* useful.......2005-12-21

I found the book to be redundant for my finance class, but the content is well presented. The book serves as back-up for a finance course. The content is more detailed (longer) than in a typical college level lecture, so it's good for you don't understand a concept from the lecture. Information is long-winded but not confusing and attractively presented.

Bottom Line: It's a solid finance book, but you shouldn't need it much if your professor is competent.

4 out of 5 stars JustAProfessor.......2005-08-26

I have used this book in the investment class I teach for 4 years. I have had very little negative feedback from students. Most seem to like it, otherwise, I would have switched books.

Maybe Justablokes problem is he thinks he is reading an economic textbook, but it is actually a financial investment book.

2 out of 5 stars This is one of the worst economics textbooks ever.......2004-04-12

I have to say that this is one of the worst economics textbooks that I have ever read. The font is tiny and reading it strains my eyes. The book is not written in a clear style at all. In fact, I often have to reread paragraphs just to understand what's going on. Sometimes, the authors go into needlessly long and complicated tangents to explain simple concepts. Someone needs to seriously condense and clarify the material in this textbook or else it'll become the bane of every college economics student's existence.

    Book Description

The Jewish Study Bible presents the center of gravity of the Scriptures where Jews experience it--in Torah. It offers readers the fruits of various schools of Jewish traditions of biblical exegesis (rabbinic, medieval, mystical, etc.) and provides them with a wealth of ancillary materials that aid in bringing the ancient text to life. The nearly forty contributors to the work represent the cream of Jewish biblical scholarship from the world over. No knowledge of Hebrew is required for one to make use of this unique volume. The JSB uses The Jewish Publication Society TANAKH Translation, whose name is an acronym formed from the Hebrew initials of the three sections into which the Hebrew Bible is traditionally divided (Torah, Instruction; Nevi'im, Prophets; and Kethubim, Writings). A committee of esteemed biblical scholars and rabbis from the Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform Judaism movements produced this modern translation, which dates from 1985. Anyone interested in acquiring a fuller understanding of the riches of the Bible will profit from reading The Jewish Study Bible.

The major objective in this revision is to maintain the current level in content and coverage, but work on improving the text's accessibility by enhancing presentation, pedagogy, and design.

    1 out of 5 stars not what I wanted.......2007-04-03

Careful with this item¡¡ This is not a text book. In my opinion, Amazon doesn't provide enough information about this book, so it might make you make a mistake.

    1 out of 5 stars don't buy this book.......2007-01-24

This isn't a textbook and a study guide! only some key word explain in the left hand side and the right hand side is blank! Don't buy this 'outline' if you only want buy a textbook.

2 out of 5 stars Very hard to read.......2003-02-11

This book is widely used in finance courses in my university, a puzzling fact because books should rarely sell if they're hard to read. The bookfs authors introduce a broad array of investment theories and discoveries. Thatfs a plus. But their wordy sentences, which grow wordier and harder to follow as they delve into each chapterfs key concepts, offset the plus. The authorsf inconsistent use of terminology is another drawback. As I move on to later chapters, I feel as if the authors were growing more verbose. That benefits no readers, given the later chapters discussing higher-level concepts.
When they revise this book for the next edition, they should hire proofreaders, journalists if possible. They care about readers and can help rewrite the entire book into a readable piece that helps students instead of confusing them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to Investment theory.......2000-12-17

I studied the entire book for my Investment Management course at Stellenbosch University in South Africa and found it very complete from the point of view of the "novice" investor and/or student. The book is not written for the intermediate or expert investor, but for an introductory course in Investment management it did the trick.

5 out of 5 stars Essentials of Investments.......1999-12-29

This is a clearly written book with excellent visual aids. I especially liked the concept checks and the current events boxes. The sample questions from CFA exams were particularly helpful. On whole the book does an exceptional job of explaining difficult subject matter. I'd even recommend this book to the 'lay' reader.
