Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Doctor De Soto Goes to Africa
ASIN: 0374418101 |
Amazon.com
Doctor De Soto is a well-respected mouse-dentist who runs a successful practice with his wife (and able assistant) Mrs. De Soto. The De Sotos are friendly and professional toward all their patients, from chipmunks to donkeys to cows, the exception being "cats and other dangerous animals," as stated clearly on the sign outside the office. But the De Sotos are tender-hearted rodents, so when a miserable fox shows up begging for treatment, they agree to have a look (perhaps against their better judgment). As it turns out, this fox, with "a rotten bicuspid and unusually bad breath," manages to behave himself while tiny Doctor De Soto is standing mid-molar inside his gaping jaws. When the wily fox returns the next day to get his replacement gold tooth, however, he has mouse-flavored snacks on his mind. Luckily, Doctor De Soto and his wife have anticipated such despicable canine intentions, and find a way to outfox the ungrateful fox.
William Steig, award-winning creator of Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, once again offers young readers a clever, amusing tale of interspecies mingling. As usual, Steig's tone is matter-of-fact, and his enchanting illustrations of the responsible mouse couple and their foxy adversary are alive with expression and emotion. Kids will appreciate the De Sotos' wit, and will be delighted to read more about this diminutive couple's adventures in Doctor De Soto Goes to Africa. (Ages 4 to 8)
Book Description
"Doctor De Soto, the dentist, did very good work." With the aid of his able assistant, Mrs. De Soto, he copes with the toothaches of animals large and small. His expertise is so great that his fortunate patients never feel any pain.
Since he's a mouse, Doctor De Soto refuses to treat "dangerous" animals--that is, animals who have a taste for mice. But one day a fox shows up and begs for relief from the tooth that's killing him. How can the kindhearted De Sotos turn him away? But how can they make sure that the fox doesn't give in to his baser instincts once his tooth is fixed? Those clever De Sotos will find a way.

I loved this book!.......2007-04-03
My Name is Deyaneira and I am 8 years old. My English teacher read this book to us in class and I thought this book was funny . My favorite part was when Dr. De Soto climbed in the fox's mouth. I recommend this book for everybody. I also like this book by Mo Willems: Edwina the Dinosaur Who Didn't Know She Was Extinct. I hope you will love this book.

Just loved this book .Great book for kids of all ages. I even enjoyed this as a adult. Great ending .
Dr. Desoto Review.......2006-11-05
This is a wonderful book! I purchased this for my 4 year old son and have given several copies as gifts to his friends. The story appeals to boys and girls. The author of this book wrote the original Shrek story as well as another book titled Boris and Amos. I highly recommend this book!
Doctor DeSoto book.......2006-03-27
You can call me StoryMaker. "Doctor DeSoto" is not my favorite book, and I especially don't like the end. I like how they are animal people, but are the size they are supposed to be. What I mean is, they are animals that talk, walk on 2 legs, and live in their own house, but unlike most people animals, they are the size they are in real life. It would probably be a book a young child would adore (probably most children ages 3-5) but I don't fall into the "Dr. DeSoto lovers" category or the "children ages 3-5" category. This book is where a mouse named Dr. DeSoto (a dentist) finds out a fox is seeking dental care. Dr. DeSoto never let an animal that might eat him come in before (that's where them being the size they are in real life is important), but the fox really wants that dental care so Dr. DeSoto's wife lets him in. The part I hate the most is the end when Dr. DeSoto gives the fox his so-called special treatment so he won't eat them. That so-called special treatment causes the fox to not be able to eat anything, even if it isn't a DeSoto family member at all. He could DIE if it dosen't ware off! I actually don't have a lot of complaints, but this book is not very exciting. Overall, perhaps you may like it, but if you like foxes, this book will not please you. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"
Funny, critical thinking perspective.......2006-03-02
Consider things from the point of view of the dentist and his patient . . . you'll be laughing out loud while reading this to your kids.
Book Description
This little book is intended primarily as a brief but comprehensive guide to puppy training. Consequently, it contains hints for socialization, temperament training and behavior modification as well as tips for teaching basic manners. Dr. Dunbar's lure/reward training techniques are certainly not limited to puppies. On the contrary, they have become the method of choice for instructing good-natured, but otherwise uneducated adult dogs.
Our best friendthe domestic dogis a social animal. It would be unfair and antisocial not to train it. How else could we communicate? Luckily, dogs can easily learn our language
if we teach them! Basically, training comprises teaching dogs ESLEnglish as a Second Languageso that our dogs will understand human words for doggy behaviors and actions.
Lure/reward training is de rigeur for training a wide variety of animals, including lions, tigers, killer whales, and grizzly bears, Over a hundred years ago, similar reward-based methods were the accepted practice for training all dogs and puppies. Unfortunately, in the twentieth century, the Trainers from The Dark Side inflicted a harsher regime of laborious, on-leash, push-pull, squish-squash, narrow-brained methods on unsuspecting owners and their dogs. Sadly, domination was the focus and the poor defenseless dog was viewed as an adversary in the training arena. Force is unnecessary and almost always counterproductive. Why treat your best friend like your worst enemy?
Welcome back to the historically-proven, so-old-that-it's-new-again, natural, common-sense, and enjoyable way to train your dogoff-leash, lure/reward, fun and games, dog-friendly dog training.
Dr. Dunbar's training techniques are altogether quicker, easier, gentler, more effective, and certainly considerably more enjoyable for you and your dog. And so without further ado, turn to the Good Manners section and begin training your puppydog right away. Lure/reward training techniques work like a treat!
Customer Reviews:
Money well spent! A Must Have!!!!!!.......2007-08-22
All I can say is that this book should go home with all new dog/puppy owners! It really is a must have, it's exactly what Dr. Dunbar say's "Efficient, Effective, Easy, Efficacious, Enjoyable, and Expedient". It's easy for kids to use too.
Sweet and simple.......2007-07-14
My dog is a product of Dr. Dunbar's training techniques. He is a dream dog! Consequently, I give his books to all my friends and family who have puppies. These books are easy to read and follow and best of all, they work!
Easy to follow and understand!.......2003-11-11
This book is written in a way that is down to earth and easy to understand, even for a first time dog owner. Dr. Dunbar's advice actually works! Just follow it and be consistent! It worked for my dog, it can work for yours too! Great pictures and even a training plan. You need this book!
What a fun and colorful book!.......2003-08-01
This book offers tons of practical advice. It has step by step photos with captions that describe exactly how to train your dog. It is entertaining and useful, cleverly written so it can be enjoyed by the whole family, adults and children alike. We followed the instruction outlined in the book and by the time our dog got to training school she was the star of the class.

Little Critter Braves a Hospital Trip.......2005-12-19
It's 2005 and the "Little Critter" series is still going strong. This very new release (as of the writing of this review), part of the "New Adventures of Mercer Mayer's Little Critter" series is written and illustrated by Mercer Mayer and deals with Little Critter taking a trip to the hospital following a sports injury.
Little Critter is playing soccer. He scores the tie-breaking, winning goal, but hurts his leg. The call comes out for an ambulance and Little Critter is taken to the hospital.
This is a great book that will show kids what a trip to the hospital is like and that it really isn't something to be too afraid of. The characters are anthropomrphic, but fairly representative of real-life. The illustrations are, as usual, detailed, with plenty of things to read and observe at the hospital that Little Critter visits.
This "Little Critter" book comes with five adhesive bandages, a sure hit with Little Critter's littlest fans.

Franklin's shell has cracked, and he needs to be a brave turtle when it's time to go to the hospital.
Customer Reviews:
great to prepare a child for surgery.......2007-03-13
This book was a great help to prepare my 4 year old daughter for surgery. Once she was at the hospital, everything was known and already seen in the book and she had fun.. I highly recommend it to relieve the anxiety before a surgery
Nice for 3 year olds too.......2007-01-28
My son was going in for same day surgery, and this was a nice way to reiterate what we had already seen on our tour. The end part where the turtle is LEFT by his parents overnight probably can be omitted, but so can so many other things in books these days. Overall, a nice and non offending book, even for a family who doesn't normally use characters such as these in their normal book libary.
Excellent book!.......2007-01-09
I got this book for my child who was about to have surgery for the first time. It helped my child relate to what was going to be happening. I would definitely recommend this book
FRANKLIN GOES TO THE HOSPITAL.......2006-02-25
This book was great for my six year old preparing to go to the hospital. It was really important for him to realize that it is okay to be scared, that it is part of the whole experience, you just need to talk about it.
Franklin Learns About the Hospital, and Bravery.......2006-01-13
Kids love Franklin the turtle and so if they have to go the hospital, this book will really help.
Franklin's shell hurts when he's trying off after having a bath. He learns he'll have to have an operation. He shows his friends a book he got all about the hospital and all his friends think that he's very brave. But he worries that he might not be as brave as everyone thinks.
I think it's neat that this book teaches on two fronts --- both technical stuff about the hospital and also about courage and feelings.
Note that while this book has the names Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clark on the cover, an examination of the title page reveals that it is actually written by Sharon Jennings (who has also done many of the TV storybooks) with illustrations by Shelley Southern. It's still a neat book though.

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-08-07
My 2-year-old daughter loves Maisy books, and this one is another great hit with her. She is now not afraid of the doctor after reading this book! Very cute.
A sweet way to make doctors less scary.......2007-01-17
It took me a while to warm to Maisy -- both the drawings and the language are incredibly simple -- but every kid I know just loves these books. I got this as part of a group of toys and books to prepare my son for his 2-year check-up, and while it may not be the most "informative," per se, it is certainly the one he likes best.
Too simple, no substance.......2004-04-09
I was disappointed and am reconsidering ever buying books online again! You can't really see what you are getting, and this is just too simple to be useful.
Doctor Maisy.......2002-01-10
If your child loves Maisy books as much as mine does, definitely add this one to your collection! Not only are the pictures colorful and inviting, but it also makes going to the doctor seem fun and exciting! Plus, it's always great to see Maisy and her friends playing different roles and doing fun things! Each page brings delight to my child's eyes!

Book Description
Sister Bear watches Dr. Bearson fill Brother Bear's small cavity. Then it's her turn in the chair to have a dangling baby tooth removed. An entertaining story for preschoolers of a cheerful and informative visit to a dentist.
Customer Reviews:
Great, great book to read before taking a child to the dentist for the first time!.......2005-12-30
Grab this book - this one should be in every library! It's a great hit at our house because in places, it's quite funny! Sister wakes up one morning with a loose tooth and thus, talks funny! The words are spelled as such so my little one gets quite the chuckle out of how sister says certain "s" words! Anyway, sister spends the entire day wiggling her loose tooth until it's time to take brother to the dentist for his checkup. The dentist finds that brother has a cavity and lets sister stand over the chair and watch while he fills brother's tooth. Brother does try to torment sister quite a bit about how the dentist is going to "yank our her loose tooth," so she is somewhat timid to get into the chair. However, she does and while she is busy asking questions and looking at the dentist's "yanker," the dentist feels her tooth in a cloth, wiggles it around and out it comes! Sister had no idea it even happened! She's pretty excited and thrilled about all of it and was very glad that brother was wrong about the yanker! She gets a dime from the tooth fairy and was very excited!
This book does an excellent job in describing what happens when you go to the dentist. It's great for getting rid of those little jitters and it really is accurate. Great job and I highly recommend it!
Wonderful!.......2005-12-15
The world lost a real gem of a writer when Stan Berenstain passed on November 29. Together, Berenstain and his wife, Jan, and eventually their two sons, created books featuring lovable but flawed characters who tackle just about every real issue that faces families.
Going to the dentist is something that most kids (and adults!) fear. And why not? It's invasive, uncomfortable, and sometimes painful to have someone poking around in your mouth with metal objects. However, it's necessary, and having a healthy attitude about it will promote lifelong oral health. This book is a great place to start if you're looking to help alleviate your child's fear about going to the dentist. It'll help open up a dialogue about your kid's fears and help you to explain why the dentist is so important. Wonderful!
More than excellent.......2004-06-10
This book helped me get through life and showed me the true path to spiritual enlightenment.
Another great book!.......2003-11-08
i love it,so does my son! he will be making his first trip to the dentist soon-ad at 29m old we need all the help we can get!
the only part that is questionable is how Sister gets her loose tooth pulled. It even gave me the willies!
my first bernstein bear book.......2003-10-16

It's time for a routine check-up with Dr. Gert Grizzly. Sister Bear is brave about her booster shot, and Brother Bear is fine, but--achoo!--is that Papa Bear sneezing? "A light-hearted approach to the subject with straightforward information."--Appraisal.
Customer Reviews:
good doctor book.......2006-11-03
This book was the favorite book for my young children (now grown) when we
were preparing for doctor visits. It is still beloved by my retarded son
who is now 31, and I have bought many copies for him through the years. It
covers all the important topics: anticipation (dread), waiting room, routine
exams, and possible shots. All of this is with pictures and words.
Wonderful!.......2005-12-15
The world lost a real gem of a writer when Stan Berenstain passed on November 29. Together, Berenstain and his wife, Jan, and eventually their two sons, created books featuring lovable but flawed characters who tackle just about every real issue that faces families.
All kids have fears of the doctor, and why shouldn't they? Most doctor's visits for young kids involve lots of uncomfortable poking and prodding, and, more often than not, shots. Yikes! However, going to the doctor is still necessary, we all have to do it. This book will help open a dialogue to let your child discuss their fears, and let you discuss why visiting the doctor is so important. Kids will enjoy the gentle humor and honest portrayal of a doctor's visit (yep, Sister Bear has to get a shot!) and the consequences when you don't go to the doctor (Papa gets sick). A great conversation starter!
Not All Doctors Are Bad........2002-09-12
Most children are afraid of going to the doctor (well a lot of adults are, too, but for completely different reasons). When the word doctor is mentioned to kids images of needles, blood, bandages, and strange looking objects come to mind. Reading THE BERENSTAIN BEARS GO TO THE DOCTOR may help relieve some of the fears that children have when they know they are going to the doctor.
In the story, Brother and Sister Bear have to go to Dr. Gert Grizzly to have a checkup. Brother isn't too bothered by the whole thing, but Sister is a bit worried. The next day Sister is able to help out some frightened younger cubs while she is in the waiting room and sets an example for all the children to follow.
Overall, a delightful little book that helps relieve children's fears of going to the doctor and gives them a broader perspective about life.
Check-up.......2001-07-21
Its the cubs time for their first check-up. Sister is VERy nervous, but both of them are worried because they thing that they might get a shot.
It is a good book to read to your kids if they are going to be going for their first check-up or anytime.
Book review for The Berenstain Bears Go To The Doctor.......1999-12-02
The berenstain Bears Go To The Doctor is a great book.I especially like how it has the cubs (brother and sister) going to the doctor for a check-up. They ended up not finding anything wrong with them and getting a shot anyway so they don't get sick. It turns out that papa, whose convises them that he never gets sick, gets sick. This is a really good book and fun to read. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Book Description
Mountain gorillas are playful, curious, beautiful, and fiercely protective of their families. They are also one of the most endangered species in the world. For many years, mountain gorillas have faced the threat of t death at the hands of poachers. Funds raised by "gorilla tourism'bringing people into the forest to see these majestic animalshave helped protect gorillas. This tourism is vital, but close contact between gorillas and people has brought a new threat to the mountain gorillas: human disease. The Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project is a group of courageous and talented scientists working to save the mountain gorilla population in Rwanda and Uganda. The "Gorilla Doctors" study the effects of human exposure, document the daily lives of the gorillas, provide emergency care to injured animals, and even act as foster parents to an orphaned gorilla baby named Fearless. Through engaging text and stunning photographs, Pamela Turner takes readers on an exploration like no other in this gripping tale of science, nature, and conservation.
Customer Reviews:
A close connection.......2006-03-03
From the compelling portrait on the front cover, the photographs are one of the strongest features of this book. There are full-page photos of gorilla hands and feet that would be wonderful for actual comparison to a young readers' hands and feet. And this comparison would support one of the key messages of this book: humans and gorillas are very much alike. Sometimes that similarity is not such a good thing; for example, as humans and gorillas come into closer contact, the apes are catching human diseases which are hard for them to fight. Gorilla Doctors describes the work of veterinarians and other scientists who are struggling to keep the great apes safe in the wild. The language is very accessible, and could even work for a read-aloud to a younger child who's particuarly interested in gorillas.
Fascinating account of gorilla vets at work.......2005-07-05
This engaging book follows staff members of the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project as they provide medical care to endangered gorillas in Rwanda. Turner combines compelling stories of individual gorillas with clear explanations of how diseases are transferred between species. Kids will be intrigued by the detective work required to diagnose gorillas from a distance. Highly recommended.
You'll feel like you're there.......2005-06-07
A vivid portrayal of important work being done by gorilla vets in Rwanda. Written by a science writer who is also a skilled storyteller, it gives the reader a first-hand look at the plight of gorillas and what is being done to help them. Accounts of charming individual animals bring emotion to the fact-packed text.
Exploring an Endangered Species.......2005-05-31
GORILLA DOCTORS takes readers into the amazing world of gorillas and introduces us to a group of dedicated veterinarians who are passionate about saving this endangered species. Pamela Turner does a fabulous job of explaining the problems the doctors face, while giving readers a sense of place for that part of the world that most of us will never see. Well illustrated with touching and informative photos of the scientists and apes.

Customer Reviews:
Great Learning Book.......2007-06-01
I have a black lab that looks just like Sally. She is a therapy dog and goes to two elementary schools a week. The children that read to her love the Sally books. It is amazing the concern they have for Sally and their interest and questions about going to the vet.
I love this book.......2006-12-15
This book is great for kids or anyone who loves dogs, especially Labs!
Sally Goes to the Vet.......2006-07-10
Beautiful illustrations, fun story that will appeal to kids & adults alike
"Just Close Your Eyes and Think a Happy Thought".......2005-02-12
Sally tells this first-person (make that first-dog) tale of her trip to the vet in another Sally series winner from author/illustrator Stephen Huneck. Sally, who is perhaps a black lab mix, is bored inside the house, where the people's homework, urgent memos, passports, old socks, and underwear surround her. Thrilled by a weather change, she goes outside and plays chase with her buddy, tabby cat Bingo. She's so excited that she doesn't see a tree stump, and she falls over, hurt.
She's rushed to the vet ("The nurse explains that 'vet' is short for doctor of veterinary medicine."), where she receives an x-ray (shown to the reader, there are no apparent broken bones), eye, mouth, and stethoscope exams (great close-ups here), and--a shot in the butt! This latter concerns her. When told to think of a happy thought, we see her closed eyes imagining a strawberry ice cream cone! "It really works! I hardly feel a thing." While resting in front of a fireplace with her best pal Bingo, Sally relays her story and the doctor's advice about happy thoughts. In a nice touch, Bingo is shown lying on big Sal's back, thinking of her doggy pal. The book may help allay children's fears of vets, and perhaps of their own doctor visits. While imagining a happy thought may not be sufficient for a young boy or girl, the book at least suggests that there are ways to manage your fears.
The highlights are probably the colorful, glossy, woodcut illustrations, a superb mix of big bold colors and detailed patterns that suggest texture and depth. Huneck seems to enjoy this mode so much that he devotes an opening paragraph in the "artist's note" to an explanation of technique, as well as a grateful note to vets everywhere. This 30-page work is one of those big picture books with simple text that will please toddlers and early readers as well.
Give this book to your vet!.......2004-07-18
I loved the first three sally books, but this one really outdoes itself. Huneck's illustrations are worth framing and thew story lends itself so well to sharing with chilren who are taking their pet to the vet for the first time.
I read this to my daughter as we brought our pet bird in for a checkup and she felt much better. Then I showed it to my vet and he had never seen another book that does such a good job of allevating a child's fear.
Can't wait for the next one!
