Great Book of Dragon Patterns.......2007-10-17
As usual another excellent book by the very talented Lora S. Irish.
If you are into dragons you MUST get this book.
Love it!!!.......2007-10-01
I have no idea what the naysayers on the other reviews were so disappointed about. This book has wonderful variety, excellent descriptions and layout. If you can't find something to use on your craft project you aren't very creative. Wonderful ideas and examples of how to apply to different mediums. Would recommend to any crafter looking for non-copywrited patterns and designs of all types, age ranges and genres of dragon lore. I will be looking to purchase more of the author other works, from tattoo art to celtic patterns.
Great Book of Dragon Patterns.......2007-09-05
I really liked the Dragon Art in this book and they show how to draw the dragons. Images can also be copied or traced for other craft projects. Would recommend for ages 10 and up.
Gift for 13 year old.......2007-08-10
When this book arrived at my home I flipped through it, and got hooked on the details on the creatures. They say you should learn something new everyday and that day I discovered there are many different kinds of dragons and other magical creatures. My Granddaughter, who received the book as a birthday book says she can now do the drawings for the "Dragon" book she's writing.
Dragon Pattern Book.......2007-03-23
Very nice collection of dragon patterns, nicely done. I would recommend this book to all who are interested in dragon drawings or patterns.

Great Book of Fairy Patterns.......2007-09-06
Great book for anyone who likes to draw or make fairies. Alot of great ideas and patterns.
Good Rescource for crafters.......2007-05-07
In all fairness, this book is a very good rescource for craft painters who paint on wood, slate, etc. And it is also a very nice rescource for anyone who wants to paint a room/ make stencils to decorate and doesn't know how to draw them freehand. Many of the drawings are not perfect (the sewing fairy has her wing drawn in front of her hair on one side)and I would not rely on the fanciful descriptions about the fairies(to me anyway)they are mostly filler to get the feel for what you are working on. (If you want to learn about real fairy folklore I would suggest getting "Fairies" By Brian Froud or looking for a title on Irish fairy tales.) I had expected a much thinner book at first, but it turned out to be more than that. It is also a good source of inspiration for more accomplished artists wanting some new ideas.
fun, and more fun!.......2007-01-05
this is a great idea book for anyone interested in fairies. The drawings are really great. My teenaged grandchildren have been having a lot of fun with this book. One of them has her room decorated in fairies, so she's going to put some of them on her wall.
Good information, but falls short........2006-12-28
The strongest part of this book is the wing patterns and what kind of fairies have these wings. Not only does it tell the size the wings should be, but also where and how to place them. There are also some nice references to angels. My favoriite part of the book is how to place different kinds of fairies in a scene, however, I would have liked to see more information devoted to this. I must agree with a previous reviewer that the faces are ugly. Obviously the artist has a problem with drawing faces. I knew this when I bought the book and can draw my own faces. The small amount of colored pictures in the book are not very advanced. The book does well in stretching one's imagination in costuming and poses. My personal objection is the author's use of the word patterns when copyright prevents one from using it as patterns unless you know how to break it up and mix and match. If one can do that, then it is useful.
Great Book of Fairy Paterns:The Ultimate Design Sourcebook for Artista and Craftspeople.......2006-09-04
They were not kidding... Ultimate and incredible, this source book is the best I have seen. I am a watercolour artists and these Patterns are easy to follow you can get as complicated or as simple as you like with each design, outline to high detail.
I love it, would recommend it with out hesitation to anyone from beginner artist to master.

Customer Reviews:
A clear (and gorgeous) presentation.......2007-10-02
As a beginning student of design, I've been looking at a number of texts. This is the best I've come across so far. The concepts are presented concisely and in a well-organized format. The illustrations are superb, drawing from a number of crafts, media, and styles. The tone is friendly and encouraging. Recommended highly!
Easy Reading Design Education.......2007-08-07
This book is a very good choice if you are looking to broaden your horizons in design. There are lots of pictures for examples, and the text is easy reading.
Well-written guide with a wide range of aesthetically pleasing examples........2007-01-09
The book is well-written and the examples include some stunning and unusual pieces of art and craft (including painting, photography, pottery, needlework, quilting and more). It is an excellent introduction to design for beginners (artists, craftsmen and art-lovers) but even intermediate readers will find it useful.
A Great Resource.......2006-08-17
This book is a great resource. It is packed with exciting, richly varied visuals and clear, informative exercises that will enrich daily appreciation and application of principles of good design all around us. As a professional artist and teacher, I enjoy this book for myself as well as share it with my students. Design! is a great resource for the student or professional.
A pleasant reading.......2004-10-15
True! Design is everywhere you look but if you don't understand what you are staring at then design is useless. Fortunately, Steven Aimone's Design! will open up your mind and guide you to see the purpose of design. What are descriptive, narrative, emotive, utilitarian, and decorative of designs? What are the elements of design (lines, shapes, textures, colors, etc.)? Why are a certain elements arranged they way they are? Why is design space important? If you're unclear about the answers to these questions, this book will help you straightened out.
As someone who gets involved with web design as a passion, I had no prior training on design. While my classes at La Salle were too busy shoving down Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and other software programs, the fundamentals of design were not part of the curriculum. One of our art professors realized the important of the missing part and tried to cover it but the class was not as successful as it should be. The hands on assignments she gave us (the black squares exercises) were definitely on the right track but most of my classmates thought they were kindergarten because the theories were missing. If she had this book to accommodate her assignments, the class would have been a huge success; therefore, Design! should be a required textbook for any Art 101 or Introduction to Visual Design classes at colleges and universities.
Design! is not only an invaluable design inspiration but an enjoyable reading as well because of its easy to read approach and clear visual examples. I recommend this book enthusiastically to anyone who designs for a living or pleasure and to anyone who simply enjoys and appreciates the aesthetic qualities from the work of art.

This outstanding collection of distinctive designs features a rich and diverse variety of patterns, which can be used as borders or individually.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent source for ideas.......2007-10-05
This is an excellent source of design ideas. I have recently started working in polymer clay and hope to start also with metal clay, so I was casting about for ideas and came across this book and CD of Celtic art motifs.
I am very fond of the basic knotted designs of the Halstadt culture which tends to be very curvilinear geometric, and over half of the designs in this book are Halstadt in style (as opposed to the later La Tène period with designs that incorporate stylized animals into the Celtic knot motif. For those who prefer the latter, check Celtic Designs in the same collection.)
The CD was easily installed on my computer, easy to open and navigate. It took me a little time to refamiliarize myself with the clip art style. I haven't used it since it came on floppy disks! This was very much easier to do.
Celtic Design Cd - excellent buy!.......2007-07-09
This was a great purchase for me. I have really enjoyed creating with the designs. There are many variations to choose from and I have used it a lot!
Great for design.......2007-04-03
I needed to get this book for some wedding designs I was making up. The pictures are great there are lots of different designs and they have them in all different file formats. Perfect for Graphic Design.
Celtic designs.......2007-01-04
No need for a scanner with the cd-rom. I use these for scrollsawing patterns.
Honestly represented and fairly priced.

Customer Reviews:
nice collection.......2007-01-25
This is an interesting collection but I don't find it too useful for goldwork embroidery. Some of the designs would work if enlarged and simplified.
Nice collection.......2005-09-21
As a person involved in art and design, I found this book to be helpful. I love the intricate designs and the explanation at the beginning of the book. I have recently implemented them in my artwork and designs. I think any artist or craftsperson would find this a helpful tool.
An excellant source for Arabic designs!.......1998-09-22
Ms. Wilson presents various elements of Arabic designs drawn mostly in black and white. She includes instruction for reproducing the designs and commentary on time periods and original colors used. The only thing that would have made this book better would have been pictures of the artifacts she refers to in her extensive documentation. A must have for anyone doing Islamic or Arabic arts!

Customer Reviews:
A peculiar view on heraldic designs.......2000-10-09
John Bergling's 1,400 heraldic designs, published in 1913, walks a thin line between trying to depict heraldic designs in a pleasing simple way, and the truly awful 'victoriana' as done by the likes of Fairbairn. His historic interpretation leaves something to be desired (like showing shields with crests only, which is simply 'not done'), and a lot of the American arms are drawn with slightly more Hollywood than Heraldry in mind. But sometimes you can feel some of the original power of heraldry flowing underneath his drawings.
I recomend this book to everyone!.......2000-07-09
Very nice book, cheap and educational! I'm happy to have it.

Customer Reviews:
Without Blazon or Reference.......2006-03-14
Moderately useful, but all of the images are Victorian era lithograph in style, and have lost a lot of whatever flair they might have had. Color was not expected, but without blazon (heraldic description) or any other reference other than plate number, only the images are of any use. There is no table of contents, and although the images are grouped according to their central character (lion, tree, etc.), that is the extent of it. There is some mention of another archive, but not in a complete context. Hunting for it may be more of a chore than throwing your hands up and finding something else. I'm not even going to try. Also, since the images are in roughly the same style, an estimate of time period or place from one's own judgement of history is nearly impossible.
Still, there are a lot of images, and by themselves are inspirational to some extent.
Overall, not a complete waste, but not worth it, either.
Not for Heraldic Reference.......2005-08-23
While this volume provides thousands of clip art purporting to be heraldic Crests, you will not find any reference to identify which name the Crests are registered to. You will not find any reference to what the charge in the Crest means, nor will you find reference to the colors that the charges should be. What you will find are generic images resembling heraldic charges in black and white. Please note that those who are expert in heraldic Coats of Arms and Crests (and there is a distinct difference if you do not know), or those interested in improving their knowledge of them, will be deeply disappointed in this book, if you are looking for reference material. Coats of Arms are frequently and mistakenly referred to as Crests. Coats of Arms are the shields carried by knights, cavaliers, etc. during the Medieval Age, which were determined by the monarch of the country for which the knight served. To use the images of this book to put together a unique Coat of Arms for one's own family is to do so without any thought to the meaning of the charges. Each charge and each color determines a virtue recognized and honored by the monarch in the presentation of the Arms, while Crests (always displayed above the knight's helmet) are colors and charges chosen by the patriarch of the family to represent the virtues he wished to preserve in the family line. Most Western European names have coats of arms already registered with the College of Arms of that nation to represent their families and responsible dealers of these can provide them - this book will not help anyone find their own coat of arms or any explanation of their meaning.
Victorian Heraldry on its Best... and Worst.......2000-10-09
A set of over 4,000 crest designs, but what a disappointment! The true heraldic craftsmen drew their inspiration from true heraldic sources, i.e. the Middle Ages. After 1600 or so heraldry went into a steep decline, culminating in the truly awful Victorian concept of depicting the 'real' thing, as opposed to the brutal and wonderful power of the symbolic art of earlier craftsmen. Thus we're stuck with 'real' lions and dragons and any kind of object, complete with shadowing. Well, the book was published in 1859, so I should have known better.... If you're interested in Victorian heraldry, it's a wonderful book. If you're interested in real heraldry it's a waste of money. Try the compilations of Sir Anthony Wagner instead. Now t h a t is true heraldic power.
Good collection of high resolution, black-and-white images........1999-03-21
Enlarged versions of the black-and-white heraldic designs common to most coats of arms and crests. Perfect for scanning and easily adaptable by experienced graphic designers. Originally published in smaller versions in Fairbairn's Book of Crests.
resource book for designing new crests, not finding old ones.......1998-09-28
This book includes hundreds of components of potential crest designs shown in black and white on plates. It does not include any family names, family crests, or or any type of index to the images included in the book.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
great for embroidery.......2007-01-25
Very useful for my simple goldwork embroidery designs. Some need enlargement and others need to remove some of the lines not needed for goldwork. Could also work with crewel embroidery although I haven't done that yet.
very simple.......2001-03-22
This book can be a very helpful one if you're looking for simple designs. It is a sample of flower motifs mostly english and french from the 19th century and some oriental motifs as well.It is all black and white patterns and it looks a lot like a coloring book.It is an OK book if you're starting with the idea but very simple if you want to go indepth.I would recommend it if you're interested in crafts in general and also if you work with kids.
