I feel sorry for anne frank because she did not get to be free. I recommend this book to people who are not prejudice because some people did not like jewish people like Adolf .A.Hitler.I think that the people who read it are going to enjoy it because it was alot of fun reading anne franks diary.Because you can see how she sufferd hiding in the secret anex for 3 years .
I liked this book because it was fun reading. A remarkable diary written by a remarkable girl!.......2001-05-06
Anne Frank lived a secret life with her family. She had to hide from the Nazis and she wrote her experiences in a diary. This is written for ages 4-8, however I would recommend it for ages 6-8. This story has more complex sentence structure, information boxes an alphabetical glossary and a comprehensive index.
When Otto gave Anne a red and light-green checked notebook with a metal lock, she never imagined the impact she would have on the world by writing her thoughts down. This is in a story format with snippets from the actual diary.
There is a picture of the place Anne hid and a picture of Anne Frank. This book just brings her story to life for young children. When people think of Anne, they think of her courage, her sense of humor and her hopes for the future.
The actual diary was first published in America in 1952 as Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. Anne dreamed of becoming one of the most famous authors in the world. I just wish she had lived to realize her dream.
For me, Anne Frank is symbolic of everything that is right about life and everything that is wrong about war. Thankfully Miep Gies kept Anne's diary which sadly, she had hoped to return to Anne. I think this book will help younger children gain a new appreciation for the lives they have and realize that not all children were as lucky to live the life they live.
Inspirational and sad, all at the same time. I have also reviewed the movie called: The Diary of Anne Frank (1959) which shows the beauty of the her spirit in the midst of an evil and ugly war.

In this fantastic book, you learn everything about Anne Frank! There are pages with photographs, even a chart with pictures of her from 1935 to 1942! You could see how much she grew up,too. They show a picture of her as a toddler and an infant.In this book, your emotions change from happy to sad during her life

Miep Gies does not consider herself to be a hero, although anyone familiar with her story would probably consider her one. In "Anne Frank Remembered" Gies (along with Alison Leslie Gold) tells of the role she played in hiding the Frank family in Amsterdam during WWII. She sets the stage with her own personal background and how she came to work for Mr. Frank, and the special connection that she almost instantaneously shared with Anne.
Thousands are familiar with the events that happened while the Franks were in hiding, thanks to the legacy of Anne's diary that Gies rescued when the families were finally captured and taken to concentration camps. Gies recalls what life was like in those days, when her husband played a role in the Dutch Resistance movement and they took a Jew in to hide in their own home while hiding the eight people at 263 Prinsengracht. Her story is one of almost unbelievable courage and audacity - to so boldly defy the German captors who invaded their land and to stand up against the evils that were being perpetrated against the Jews. Miep Gies believes that others would have done, and did do, the exact same thing that she did.
The story Gies has to tell expands upon the events put forth in Anne's diary. Although those in hiding knew the danger that awaited not only them but also their helpers, reading events from Miep's perspective adds another layer to the saga of the Frank family. One might wish that she expounded more upon the period after the war ended, but her focus is on Anne Frank first and foremost. So much hope was held out that Margot and Anne might make it. When news came that they didn't, it seems as if a part of Miep died, and it took her several years before she could bring herself to read Anne's diary. Even if these events are hard to speak about and hard to read, her story is a necessary addition to Anne Frank's legacy.

Millions of people around the world have been inspired and touched by the story of Anne Frank, the young Jewish girl, who spent two long years in hiding, with family and a few friends, in Amsterdam, from their Nazi persecutors, during the second World War, before they were discovered and shipped off tho their deaths in Auschwitz.
Twenty years ago Miep Gies (98 years old at the time of writing of this review) revealed her own courageous and generous role in hiding the Frank family and others, and providing them with food, companionship, and most of all hope.
She gives revealing insight into Anne's life and of her own.
Miep had been a hungry child refugee from Austria, just after the First World War, and passed her own experiences of generosity and compassion on.
We read of the Nazi ocupation of the Netherlands, the decrees and attacks against the Jews, and of the deportations and hidings.
Ultimately every man and women must ask what they would do, when a world goes mad.

My son had to do a report on a historical character for his 8th grade English class so we picked up this book and several others at the library. I had read the Diary of Anne Frank several times in the past - mainly for school when I was younger. I started to look through this book and couldn't put it down. It is a very simply written and a straightforward account of the story of the Frank family, how she got to know them and their years in hiding. The last section when Otto Frank returns home (he was the only survivor of the original eight) is heartbreaking. Miep was there through it all and her strength and courage are incredible.
We visited the Holocaust Museum in D.C. last summer and all those haunting pictures and displays came back to me. If you visit D.C. you should go there. We must never forget what happened to these people.
"the other side" of life in hiding.......2005-01-20
Strangely enough, I read this book before reading Anne Frank's diary. (It is really better to read Anne Frank's diary first.) It is the story of life in the attic from the other side. Miep Gies is the woman who helped Anne and her family stay in hiding by providing them with food and other necessary items. She put herself at great personal risk to do this...Their hiding would not have been possible without outside assistance.
This is a story of courage,sacrifice and hope...the good side of human nature portrayed in an otherwise very evil time. This book should be on your shelf next to Anne Frank's diary.

I think many of us would like to think that if a family that we know well is in dire need, we would go to extreme measures to help them in any way we can. But if it came down to a life-and-death decision, I wonder how many people would have made the same decision that brave Miep Gies made to help out the Franks. She details this decision, and her years of helping the Franks hide in the little apartment behind her office, in her well-told book "Anne Frank Remembered".
Part memior, part rememberance of Anne herself, this book details the life of Miep, from a little girl born in Vienna, to her migration to Amsterdam. She becomes an office worker in Otto Frank's pectin business, and her history is now set. Soon, due to Hitler's oppresive policies against the Jews, the Franks must go into hiding to survive.
Miep recounts details of her assistance in helping keep the Franks, the Van Daans and Albert Dussel alive. In fact, this book is a brilliant piece of writing to accompany Anne Frank's diary. While Anne details life inside the Annex, we find out from Miep what she was doing outside. Together, they paint a complete picture of the horror and danger of their daily lives. And when Anne's diary stops before that faithful day, Miep's story continues. She bravely tries to bribe the Franks out of captivity to no avail.
Whereas Anne is probably the most "famous" Frank, Miep does talk about her from time to time, knowing that we would want to know her impressions of the little girl. She offers some touching, poignant insights to Anne, making her seem more real, if that's possible. Detailing Anne growing out of her clothes, which Anne domcuments herself in her diary, is a particular moment that shows us Anne having to grow up, imprisioned becuase of her religion and for her safety.
Without a doubt, Miep and all of the people who aided the Franks in the Annex are heroes. This time of history had many thousands of heroes, many of them unsung. Fortuantely, we have a well-documented life of Anne and we can spend as much time as possible with them, thanks to these books.

I just finished this book a few minutes ago and I just picked it up an hour ago. I re-read some parts, and I loved it! I loved the pictures, I had never seen most of them. I never knew there was a picture of one day old Anne or her and her sister Margot when they were young like on pages 12 and 13. Well written!
Get this book for your child............2005-04-07
I bought this for my daughter's recent 10th birthday. She had been asking questions about the Holocaust and I thought the best way to answer was to give her an "introduction", so to speak. She has not put this book down in over a week -- she brings it with her everywhere, along with a few other books on random subjects.....so is the short attention span of a 10-year-old. Who can better get the attention of a young girl, than something written by another young girl, right? This book will whet her appetite for future class assignments on the subject in years to come.

The DK Biography of Anne Frank is a combination of her life and the setting in which she lived. Kem Knapp Sawyer explores Anne Frank's life in Amsterdam and then shows how her life changed as she was forced to hide in the secret annex. She explains the frustrations Anne felt as she was locked in just a few rooms and how her emotions often overwhelmed her and how her situations brought on depression.
Anne Frank's story has always fascinated me because it represents the risks human beings will take to protect the innocent and it also shows how individuals can endure great hardship in order to see a new day of freedom. Through her diary we can understand the world of a child hiding from death itself.
There are pictures of the diary, pictures of the large bookcase that concealed the entrance to the hiding place and what Anne could see from the attic window. The author also explains how there are three versions of Anne's diary and how her diary was eventually published with original and revised diary entries.
As the author notes, we can't always escape suffering and cruelty, but we can try.

This book by Eva Schloss is totally amazing. Not only have I read the book more than once I have actually met Eva Schloss herself!! We managed to meet her because my year six teacher knows her and managed to arrange a meeting for all of the year six's to meet her. She read bits of her book to us and we were shocked and dismayed by the state the Nazis treated these people. She showed us her tattoo, and said that you could only just see it because the person who marked her done it lightly because her mother had begged them to do it lightly. I also got her book and she signed. I was very pleased.
This book shows the horrors of World War II and what it was like it Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Eva's Story Is Still A Hit.......2003-02-24
I also teach an extensive unit on the Holocaust and Anne Frank. I am always on the look out for survivor stories for teens. This book certainly makes the cut. It is easy-to-read yet does relate the horrors of her experience in the camps. Her relationship to her mother and others in the camps shows the definite role companionship played in survival.
Eva's relationship to Anne Frank is simply a plus for the book. To have lived so close to Anne and even played in her house with her cat makes Anne become even more alive. Eva's relationship with her brother parallels Anne's relationship to Margot. Interestingly, Heinz and Margot seems to have similar personalities as do Anne and Eva. ...Her courage to speak about this terrrible time in history is a reminder to us all to remember what happened and those who are no longer with us and have no one to remember them.

Lighting a Single Candle: Eva's Story.......2001-03-04
They say it is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness and Eva's Story does just that. Out of the ashes of Auschwitz comes this remarkable testament to the healing power of love triumphing over hatred. Eva's family, like Anne Frank's, were German-speaking Jews who sought refuge in Amsterdam and went into hiding until they were betrayed and sent to Auschwitz in May, 1944. Eva and her mother, Fritzi, survived against incredible odds; her highly intelligent father, Erich, and talented brother, Heinz, did not, though their visual diaries -- the paintings they created while in hiding--did. Some of these are reproduced in the book and help the reader see the Holocaust from a different perspective than Anne Frank's writings. Eva and Fritzi's accessible and compelling narrative of their ordeal is rich with examples of how a mother's love for her daughter saved both their lives. What a great author she may have been .......2005-08-19
This wonderful little book is a collection of Anne Frank's lesser known writings , found in a seperate volume.
It shows what a phenomenal young writer she was , and hints what a great author she may have been had she been allowed to live.
The book consists of fables and short stories as well as personal reminiscenses and essays.
They range from 'Kitty' - Anne's reflections on the blonde little girl next door , to beautiful fairy tales (which remind me a bit of Oscar Wilde's fairy tales) like 'The Wise Old Dwarf' and 'The Fairy'-all have a wonderful lesson enclosed within.
'Paula's Plane Trip' and 'Cady's Life' focus on the adventures of young girls during wartime , the latter touching on the holocaust which later swallowed up Anne's young life.
A constant theme in the book is Anne's conviction that relaxing and connecting with nature , can ease one's mind from any difficulties.
In 'Personal Remininscinces and Essays' Anne Frank lets us know a little bit more about life in the little house where she and other Jews hid for some years from Nazi terror.
In a particularly poignant passage , she remarks that after the war , she would get together photos of the people in the house, which is why she spent so little time on physical description of the house's inhabitants. Anne was confident she would survive the war , and recontinue her life.
A remarkable testament to the wonderful life of a child whose life was cut so short.
Great stories and reminicenses from a talented young girl........2003-09-03
I truly enjoyed Anne Frank's Diary, now I have had the privilege to read her tales. A talent in it's purest form. I believe it was Anne Frank who said she wanted to be famous and/or to live on after her death, and of course she has in so many ways. Her diary has sold millions upon millions of copies around the world, her story told in a broadway play, countless films and documentary's.To me it looks like Anne has gotten her wish, she has lived on, more than she'll ever know. I like so many other's have wondered what kind of person Anne Frank would have been if she had survived, of course we will never know, but her diary and her story's were left behind to be discovered and to be told to everyone around the world, what a good person we could have a had on this planet, a great and talented young girl who was taken away but not forgotten.
Something other then the diary.......2003-01-26
Ok, so Anne's diary will almost always out shadow other stories shes written, and with good reason, but the stories here are rather well written. The 1st half of the book contains actuall stories she was writting, some short, some long, and part of an unfinished novel. The 2nd half of the story is memories of events that happend to her in her life that she wrote down.
Anyone who likes her diary should really give her stories a read.
Unforgettable stories for young and old alike........2002-01-29
In her now famous Diary, Anne Frank said "I want to go on living even after my death". As of 1998, The Diary of Anne Frank had reached sales of 25 million copies and been translated into more than 50 languages. (source: TIME, October 5, 1998). It has been required classroom reading for half a century now! In a way, her wish has come to pass.
This subsequent publication "Tales From The Secret Annex" combines short stories, reminiscences/vignettes, and even an unfinished novel to show us yet another dimension to this remarkable person. Reading these stories and little essays confirmed my personal opinion that Anne Frank was a childhood genius with unlimited potential to achieve anything she would have set her mind to. It's hard to imagine this thirteen year old girl writing with such depth and perception, while living in seclusion, terror and fear for her life. She was writing from her heart, not with an expectation of being published. And yet these stories shine with a polished brilliance, and a certain unforgettable quality. I read this book for the first time 8 years ago, and have returned to it now, remembering the stories as though I had read them just last week. My favorite is entitled "Kathy". In three short pages, Anne captures every emotion experienced by a kid who is misunderstood by her mother, assaulted by schoolyard bullies who mock and rob her and cause her to lose the gift she was bringing home to her mother.
Here is how she ends her essay entitled "Give":
"If only our country and then Europe and finally the whole world would realize that people were really kindly disposed toward one another, that they are all equal and everything else is transitory!
Open your eyes... give of yourself, give as much as you can! And you can always, always give something, even if it is only kindness! No one has ever become poor from giving! If you do this, then in a few generations no one will need to pity the beggar children anymore, because they will not exist!
There is plenty of room for everyone in the world, enough money, riches, and beauty for all to share! God has made enough for everyone. Let us all begin by sharing it fairly." (written March 26, 1944).
Anne was sent to Bergen-Belsen, where some time during March 1945, she, her sister Margot and hundreds of other prisoners were stricken with typhus. Their captors, preoccupied with the advancing Allies, left them to die.

Stories from a gifted writer who was never allowed to be..........2001-03-06
Also published under the title "Tales from the House Behind," this is a collection of juvenile/young adult stories that Anne Frank worked on during her years in hiding in the annex with her family and fellow fugitives. It proves that this young girl had an incredible gift for writing, and that had she lived she probably would have been received the Noble Prize for Literature. Her stories were often candid indictments of her own family life, such as Kitty, which tells the story of a young girl who day-dreams and a mother who wants her child to listen and obey rather than dream. Anne's essays show an in-depth understanding of human nature, surprising for one so young. This is a poignant book filled with fables, short stories, essays and even part of an unfinished novel. It's worth reading after you have read "The Diary of Anne Frank" simply because the diary will give you more insight to this amazing girl's life. However "Tales from the Secret Annex" stands on its own too, and like the diary should be on every school child's list of books to read.
