Book Description

Written by Bob Meehan, the "Father of Drug Intervention," and first published in 1984 as an answer to the alarming drug problem in our country, Beyond the Yellow Brick Road, was an instant success. With over 100,000 copies in print since publication, BYBR is a testament to Bob Meehan's unrivaled insight into teenagers and adolescent chemical abuse. This powerful book guides readers through the psyche of these "fun machines" we call teenagers. Additionally, the text offers parents practical advice about teens and drugs in a time of drug proliferation in society and the media, even what to look for in local drug programs and how to start a drug program. The insight in BYBR stems from Bob Meehan's 30 years of helping thousands of teenagers and their families recover from the devastation of teenage chemical abuse and learn to live a life of "enthusiastic sobriety."

This newly revised edition of the classic text in its field has been updated and re-released in 2000. The Revised edition contains new insight into Bob Meehan's journey since the initial release of the book, and updated perspectives and guidance for parenting and teenagers as the yellow brick road leads us into the 21st Century.

1 out of 5 stars Read, only if you support CULTS!!!.......2007-07-28

Bob Meehan is the founder and leader of a group of sobriety programs that are constantly criticized for being cults. There is a reason this is so. The group encourages members to not associate with anyone other than group members. Their outpatient programs have persistently struggled to be recognized by the states they are in. They teach young kids that if they are to be successful at recovery, that they must constantly depend on the group, in turn teaching them they can never be independant of the group.

If you are looking to help your child, you may be doing another thing that separates them from you. Bob Meehan's scams can be equally as successful as drugs in separating families.

If you do buy this book, you should be extremely cautious about how your use it's information. You face danger of being sucked in to his bogus recovery plan. Meehan has been proven to be a racist, bigot, and a scam artist. If you want to find more out about Bob Meehan, go here: http://ontheemmis.com/about_meehan

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone affected by a substance abuser.......2007-03-14

This is hands down the best book to read if you have a child that uses chemicals. The book will give you insight into the nature of the problem but more importantly, will walk you through what the solution is in a way that is not only easy to read and understand, but is actually entertaining (considering the serious nature of the topic). I spent years working in the field of substance abuse counseling (as a certified counselor) and have never seen another publication bring as much hope and workable solution as "Beyond The Yellow Brick Road" does. Although this book is geared toward parents with a substance abusing child, you'll find that the tools and principles outlined in the text will grant you freedom from the nightmarish dynamics that any-aged substance abusers set up. If you purchase this book, I recommend that you buy a few of them because after you read it, you will want to give copies to other people you know in similar situations. One more thing...I suggest that other substance abuse counselors read the book. The tools in it will be helpful to you as well. Recommending the book to some of the cases you are working with WILL make your job easier!

5 out of 5 stars KIDS STOP SMOKING POT! PARENTS GET HOPE,MUST READ.......2006-07-06

You will not like this book if you want your children to smoke pot.
You will not like this book if you do drugs.
You will not like this book if you choose to live in the problem.
You will not like this book if you do not want hope.
You will not like this book if you do not want anything to do with recovery.

IF YOU WANT SOBRIETY FOR YOUR CHILD, A SOLUTION TO LIVE IN, HOPE FOR YOUR FAMILY, RECOVERY FOR YOUR FAMILY, AND YOU WANT YOUR CHILD BACK, OFF OF DRUGS, THEN READ THIS BOOK. NOW.

I love this book. This book is about teenage drug abuse and recovery. Many people claim to understand teenagers and addiction, most do not.

"Heavy marijuana abuse has a harmful effect on key processes within the brain, and may make the individual more sensitive to immediate rewards, less sensitive to losses, and slow to learn from previous mistakes. Damage to areas of the brain associated with decision-making can significantly increase a person's vulnerability to addictive behaviors." (NeuroImage)

An estimated 1.1 million youths ages 12 to 17 meet the diagnostic criteria for dependence on illicit drugs -- a history of regular and chronic use -- and approximately 915,000 are dependent on alcohol. (I think these are low estimates)
I wonder how many 18 to 24 year olds meet this criteria... And if they are using illegal substances, does it matter if they are addicted? Does it have to be that bad to get them the help that they need? I mean if that is where they are heading in that direction, can't we help them now? If you want to stop the madness, break the denial. YES YOU CAN.

Your child is fortunate that you are supporting his or her substance abuse treatment. They may not know this now, but they will, after they get the help that they need.
The adolescent brain and psyche are still maturing and proper addiction treatment will significantly improve your teen's quality of life, both now and as an adult.

There are no quick fixes for the diseases of drug abuse and alcoholism. Recovery is an ongoing process. The skills one learns during intensive treatment must be integrated into everyday life and this takes time. It must be an attractive solution, like the one talked about in this book.
I have done my research, this book is the best on the subject. As far as treatment is concerned, go to www.thecrossroadsprogram.com read the testimonials and check out the other links. Gather information, speak to a counselor, READ THIS BOOK! GET THE HELP YOUR FAMILY NEEDS!

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This.......2006-06-20

Bob Meehan is an arrogant "author" that thinks his ideas are foolproof. This book is full of anti-drug propaganda and lies. Take it from someone who experienced the drug rehabilitation program Crossroads that is based on his teachings and led by Meehan. It is for all intents and purposes a cult that keeps its members seperated from the rest of the world. Kids are much better off smoking pot following this guy's advice.

5 out of 5 stars read this.......2006-06-02

Beyond the Yellow Brick Road- our Children and Drugs, is the

most straight forward, honest book that I have read. Bob

Meehan wrote this book on his experiences, from his heart. I

strongly suggest that all parents read this book. Also,

counselors, therapist, Doctors, anyone who works with kids.

This book not only defines the problem accurately, it gives

solutions - logically.

It gives simple suggestions that really work.

I have been thinking about what to say about this book. My

heart is so filled with hope. As the discomfort or shall I

say "Dis-ease" had taken over my family. The children had a

mission, to divide and concur. They were succeeding. Drug

addiction and alcoholism run in our family. We have been to

many counselors, therapist, and Doctors. None had helped. We

had many nights, when the police would call, to notify the

responsible adults of the teenagers law breaking. Hospital

visits, and friends and family that are no longer with us

because of this disease. So often it felt as if there were no

solution. Well, there is. Read this book. This book really

is a life savor, a God send. We have found hope and the

disease is no longer taking over our family. Through this book,

we have located an Enthusiastic Approach program. It offers

support for the kids and parents. We have life back. I will

forever be grateful. Pot is dangerous, over a period of time,

it has destroyed everything in its path. When you get some

time away from it, you will see.

I can not stress enough, Please read this book, and then pass

it on.

5 out of 5 stars collection of thoughts.......2006-06-02

The following statements are things that have been said about this book.....

Bob Meehan's approach to adolescent substance abuse problems in

this country is still the only logical approach I've read. The

idea that a teenager must WANT to be sober in order to stay

that way is logical. The treatment industry has been busy

trying to be attractive to parents and appease them with

depressive and attention deficit diagnosis that are "easily"

resolved with more drugs. This book uses common sense -

teenagers make decisions based on what is attractive to them.

Teenagers must be shown the attractive, fun, enthusiastic side

of recovery - or there won't be any. If you are a parent and

your child is using drugs and alcohol - please read this book,

it helped save my life.

This book is a must read for any parent, especially a parent

with a child who has a drug problem. Listen to the message.

This is the greatest book about children and drugs, and

recovery that there is. The book, has much needed information

for all parents and other professionals dealing with

adolescents with drug problems. It gives hope to any parent who

has been struck with the destructive nature of drug abuse in

your family. It is an easy read, and a must read.

This book is a must read for any family who is suffering from

the effects of alcohol and or substance abuse. It brings a

message of hope, and understanding. If you have a child that

you are concerned about, this book is a must read.

This book is a life saver. A must read for any parent. I have

never read another book that has helped our family so much. I

have read this book several times, each time I learn something

new. This book has a real perspective on teenage drug use.

This book is a must read for any parent, especially a parent

with a child who has a drug problem. Listen to the message.

The book was a godsend for me and my husband. We were at our

wits end, not knowing where to turn to help our sons who were

out of control with their drug abuse. Our family was falling

apart. We enrolled (the whole family) in a drug abuse program

that is based on this book. It was obvious immediately that Bob

Meehan has a unique gift for understanding teenage drug abuse

and the most effective techniques for recovery. Plain and

simple - the book just makes sense! If you have a teenager

abusing drugs, read this book, you do not need to read anything

else.

If you only have one book to read on this topic... this is it !

It addresses some specific issues in a very direct

way. I was not looking for a "candy coated" solution. I was

looking for real answers.

I found hope and inspiration from this book. I also found

serenity after reading this book, which is something that I had

not had in a long time.

This book is great for any parent or professional who is

looking for something different that works.

The problem is I never thought about what pot did to my head.

All that I know is that this book really made me think. I think

that thinking is good for people. This book is worth reading.

Oh in case you were wondering, Yes I did stop using.

First of all, the subject of drug and alcohol abuse amoung

young people is a devestating thought. It is even worse when

it happens in your family, with your kid. I know that no parent

wishes this on there child, but when it happens, what do you

do. So many feelings of anger, sadness, and even guilt fill

your body. It is not your fault. Please read this book, it

will help in so many ways!

I love this book. This book is about teenage drug abuse and

recovery. I believe it is the best book out there on the

subject. It addresses some specific issues in a very direct

way. I was not looking for a "candy coated" solution. I was

looking for real answers.

Something that I could physically do.

Not all children "just say no" and what do you do if your says

yes? This book helps explain solutions. I took from this book,

and was able to apply to my life. The author has "been there

done that" and comes from both the perspective of a parent and

an addict.

I believe that these solutions save lives, I know that they

helped save my family.

I found hope and inspiration from this book. I also found

serenity after reading this book, which is something that I had

not had in a long time. I know that this book gave me

validation and the courage to apply the solutions. Which is a

big deal. I hope that anyone who has a child with a drug or

alcohol problem reads this and begins the recovery process.

5 out of 5 stars Helped me and my family!!!.......2006-05-24

This book has helped me tremendously. I first read this book when I joined an enthusiastic recovery program in St. Louis, Mo. It was the first thing that I read and was able to relate to. It gave me a really cool perspective on sobriety. My mom also got rocked by the book. All of this helped her and me, which has ultimately helped me to stay sober and have a lot of fun doing so.

Beyond The Yellow Brick Road is a lifesaver.

Each chapter in the book

Chapter 1 The Beginning. This chapter

basically describes the authors story of both using drugs and

getting sober.

Chapter 2; The teenage Psych- This chapter describes the

teenager. That they are normally abnormal, they are fun

machines, the are natualaly self centered, and they basically

think that they are bullet proof.

Chapter 3; Reality is for people who can't cope with

drugs, wrangelers, and levi's. - This chapter talks about

unearned highs, drugs and emotional growth, just to name a few.

chapter 4; The parent chapter - This chapter talks about YOUR

KID GETTING CAUGHT, about fear, the parent psyche and being a
united front. This chapter is my favorite.

Chapter 5;Marijuanna- The craze That's Not A Phase. Obvious

what this chapter is about. Still the best chapter on

Marijuanna that I have ever read.

Chapter 6; Drugs in the media- hollywood

Chapter 7; seventh eneing stretch -This is about a lot of

things that didn't work (in my opionion)at the end of the

chapter,he talks about the rest of the book being about

solutions.

Chapter 8; The recovery phenomenon- needs, 12 steps (these

steps appear to be for young people, pretty neat)

Chapter 9; Trick or Treatment -

Enthuastic recovery for families, Here are the solutions!

Chapter 10; Local Drug Programs

Chapter 11;Prevention

Chapter 12; Click

with a child who has a drug problem.

5 out of 5 stars break down chapter by chapter.......2006-06-02

Beyond The Yellow Brick Road is a lifesaver.

      Each chapter in the book

      Chapter 1 - The Beginning.

This chapter basically describes the authors story of both

      using drugs and getting sober.

The thing that I identify the most with is when Bob's mom did

not bail him out of jail, and finally stopped enabling him.

While I realize that Bob did not like this at the time, I also

know that was probably the hardest thing his mother ever had to

      do.
      Chapter 2; The teenage Psych-

This chapter describes the teenager. That they are normally

abnormal, they are fun machines, the are naturally self

centered, and they basically think that they are bullet proof.

My favorite part.... is that "teenagers feel inadequate because

they are." Wow, this is a very simple statement, very true.

Chapter 3; Reality is for people who can't cope with

      drugs,wrangelers, and levi's.

      - This chapter talks about unearned highs, drugs and emotional

growth, just to name a few.

Unearned highs, the simple fact that most teenagers at some

point or another are forced into a society that somewhat

encourages unearned highs is mind blowing. I mean come on,

this is the MTV generation right? This part of the book not

only explains this, it talks about a solution!

chapter 4; The parent chapter -

This chapter talks about YOUR KID GETTING CAUGHT, about fear,

the parent psyche and being a united front. This chapter is my

      favorite.

Every parent should read this chapter, even if your child has

never abused drugs or alcohol. Being a united front could save

      your child's life.

Chapter 5;Marijuanna- The craze That's Not A Phase.

Obvious what this chapter is about. Still the best chapter on

Marijuana that I have ever read.

It has proven to me that pot is the most dangerous drug. I

know it sounds crazy, but it is true. If you do not believe

      me, read this chapter.

Chapter 6; Drugs in the media- Hollywood

It is the MTV generation. Do you know who is teaching your

children? The ones that they look up to? Where they learn

      what is cool?

Chapter 7; seventh inning stretch -This is about a lot of

things that didn't work (in my opinion the end of the chapter,

he talks about the rest of the book being about solutions. To

me the solutions are what count. Solution, solution, solution!

Chapter 8; The recovery phenomenon- needs, 12 steps (these

steps appear to be for young people, pretty neat)

This is the only thing that makes since. Most recovery

programs are for adults, not teens. How many 15 year olds have

truly lost everything? Not many, and these steps make since

for kids. If only part of his life is unmanageable, should he

continue to use, until he has lost everything? This offers a

      better way!

Chapter 9; Trick or Treatment -

Enthusiastic recovery for families, Here are the solutions!

Sobriety, made fun! People would not do drugs if they did not

work. Enthusiastic sobriety works, and offers a better way of

life that is attractive to teens.

      Chapter 10; Local Drug Programs

      Chapter 11;Prevention

      Every parent should read.
      Chapter 12; Click

      Solutions!!!!!!!!!

This book is great for any parent or professional who is

looking for something different that works. Really works.

It also is a great read for anyone who is considering getting

sober. It saved my family, I hope that it can help your also.

Thank you for reading my review.
