Product Description

To meet the need for clear and accurate information, Professors Anson F. Rainey and R. Steven Notley have now come forward with an atlas that traces the course of Near Eastern history from the Chalcolithic Age (c. 3500 BCE) to the defeat of Bar Kochba's fighters and their retreat to the caves east of En-gedi. The product of close cooperation between two distinguished scholars of world renown and the knowledgeable and experienced staff of Carta, Jerusalem, this Atlas provides 300 state-of-the-art maps to show as far as possible in terms of modern knowledge the changes and historical processes that affected the lands of the Bible. Included are all historical and biblical episodes that can be depicted cartographically—migrations and settlements, battles and conquests, the location and detailed movement of individual historical and biblical characters. In addition, The Sacred Bridge—Carta's Atlas of the Biblical World draws on information from all known ancient sources-Egyptian, Assyrian, Greek, Roman and others—to reveal trade routes, economic determinants, and the development of international relations. Maps, many of them never before attempted, are presented chronologically, with extensive interpretive texts alongside. Finds, tools, artifacts, inscriptions and other documents from each period also appear in conjunction with the maps. The ultimate usefulness of any complex reference work depends on its index and its bibliography, and The Sacred Bridge—Carta's Atlas of the Biblical World provides everything that could be asked for in the way of organized assistance to the reader. Each person or site can be located. An invaluable chronological table correlates historical activity in the East (Mesopotamia and Anatolia), the southern Levant, Egypt, and the Greco-Roman West from 2800 BCE to the second century CE. The superb reference sections contain every article, book or document consulted. The extensive index contains every place name that has been mapped and, in addition, names that still defy exact location but can be shown in relation to specific biblical episodes. New Testament geography, especially that of the Gospels, is interpreted in the light of the new understanding resulting from such discoveries as the Dead Sea Scrolls (e.g., the wider use of Hebrew as a social and religious vehicle than heretofore acknowledged). These refreshing insights serve to define geographical terms used in the New Testament and trace their origin. Documents are presented in their original languages and transcribed or translated into English. A special feature of this atlas is the insertion of these texts and their meaning within the narrative proper.

5 out of 5 stars This is a most valuable treatise, not just an atlas.......2007-01-28

Receiving this book has been an extremely pleasant surprise for me. Knowing the quality of Carta atlases, I ordered it expecting a top-quality up to date biblical atlas. However, I found it a superb, well-documented treatise of the pre-biblical, biblical and post biblical world, through the Bar Kokhba revolt, illustrated with high quality maps and photos. Although these illustrations, by themselves, are highly instructive, they do not make this unique volume as valuable as it will be to any serious biblical scholar. The authors compiled tremendous amounts of historical and archeological information that would be hard to retrieve otherwise. Although experts may argue about details of the information presented on the interpretation of certain biblical passages, as these depend on the academic school they represent, this book provides an unprecedented wealth of up to date information; information that will allow interested biblical scholars to go to the sources and expand their horizons. Last but not least, this treatise documents in great detail the robust connection between the biblical text with the geography of the ancient Jewish homeland and with relevant recent archeological findings. It is, therefore, also of substantial timely value when the veracity of biblical history is being questioned not be scholars but by biased political parties.

    Book Description

Casting the tumultuous history of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam against the rich canvas of the Near East, The Biblical World reveals how three great religions emerged from the same cradle. Author Jean-Pierre Isbouts employs a non-denominational perspective and a wide range of sources—from ancient hieroglyphic texts to the latest scientific findings—to place Bible stories in the framework of history. Chronologically arranged chapters detail battles, conquests, tribal migrations, natural calamities, and more, supporting the stories with intriguing archaeological evidence. To locate sites and events, National Geographic cartographers have created fifty all-new maps of stunning quality. Hundreds of photographs and artifacts add visual excitement. Quick-read timelines link events across cultures while illustrated sidebars focus on what life was like during each era: family roles, farming, trade, dress, childbirth, burial customs, and other aspects of daily existence.

The story traces the evolution of Judaism from Abraham to the Unified Kingdom of Israel... chronicles the emergence of Christianity in the context of Greco-Roman civilization... and identifies the unique circumstances that prepared for the rise of Islam. The multi-dimensional approach weighs similarities and differences among the three faiths and follows developments in nearby lands. With a foreword from bestselling author Bruce Chilton and text reviewed by distinguished advisers, The Biblical World offers a carefully researched, balanced view of history and religious tradition. For its scope, beauty, and relevance in today's world, this unparalleled atlas is destined to become a classic.

    3 out of 5 stars Mixed bag.......2006-12-10

I regret buying this volume. Yes, visually it's a beautiful publication, as other readers have attested. What I really object to, and find quite offensive, is the use of politically correct replacements for the time-honored BC and AD. I could tolerate such usage in a secular publication, but in a Christian publication, and a bible atlas of all places ... it's just too ironically absurd for words.

3 out of 5 stars Lavishly illustrated, mediocre layout.......2006-04-15

This book is beautiful! The illustrations are wonderful. It reminds me of the old Time-Life books.

You will find illustrations juxtaposed with photos of recovered artifacts. The maps are wonderful and well drawn. There are several cut-away views of places like the Hebrew Tabernacle, Solomon's Temple Herod's Palace and Masada. You will find illustrations of Jerusalem at various points in history. There is even a view of the Via Dolorosa (Christ's walk to Calvary).

The text for the most part is only marginally useful, though only peripherally related to the images on the page. It consists mainly of simple Bible stories. The captions, however, are quite helpful.

Unfortunately, the author seems to have forgotten that there is such a thing as a binding in a book. Many illustrations and maps needlessly cross the binding and are distorted and obscured. I say needlessly because in most cases they would have fit on one page, but instead some text or a smaller image pushed the larger one to the side. This is so frequent that it is a serious shortcoming and detracts significantly.

Overall a good effort, but the layout drops it at least a full star.

3 out of 5 stars Maybe too basic for the serious student of the bible.......2006-01-16

Lots of big pictures and some interesting factoids, but surprisingly light weight for its lineage (Collegeville Press). Has not proven to be the resource I was looking for, but a nice "bathroom" book.

    This book contains:
    · a visual guide through the world of the Bible,
    · up-to-date maps from Oxford Cartographers,
    · modern pictorial techniques show the current findings of biblical archaeology and ecumenical Bible research,
    · rich illustrations,
    · computer-simulated three-dimensional reconstructions,
    · a synthesis of the biblical past and present based on the highest canons of scholarship,
    · a sharply highlighted and imaginatively presented glimpse of a past world, and
    · a fascinating and informative reference work for all who love the inexhaustible riches of the Bible and delight in delving into it.

3 out of 5 stars The crease kills it.......2000-12-04

Like many other atlases of biblical times, this atlas is filled with colorful images, drawings and maps. In particular, this book is more than just an atlas, but a visual guide to the location and lifestyle of the biblical lands. Many of the visual insets are well reporduced and nicely described. The text is easy to read, informed by recent scholarly opinion, and is approached from a secular standpoint.

The main complaint with the book is its layout of images of cities and area maps across two pages. While the larger size of the maps and images of cities and temples is appreciated, the hardcover binding of the book really distorts the images. For example, about 2 inches of the map on page 59 of the Assyrian Empire is pushed leftwards on to page 58, and to the right of the map is a two inch column depicting a tribute obelisk. While removing this small image and description and placing it on page 58, leaving 59 free to contain the entire map, might make the book's page layout less exciting, at least the map would not be distorted by the binding crease.

Since the main focus of an atlas of this sort should be its images (and not necessarily the text, although that is important), it really detracts from the overall appreciation of the book to experience such distortion of maps and images page after page. Almost every 3D topographical map is distorted in this fashion.

The publisher would have better served the editors if care would have been taken to create maps and images which could either have been contained on one page, or designed with a hardcover binding as interference, reducing the image distortion.

Otherwise the book is beautifully done, containing clear appropriate images and easy, intelligent text, without noticable religious bias. If your looking just for images and maps, perhaps you might look elsewhere. But if you want interesting engaging text with nicely done (though poorly implemented) maps and drawings, as well as a wealth of descriptive artifacts from the lands of the bible, then I would recommend this book.

        Book Description

Nowhere in the world has a more tumultuous history than the Holy Land, that troubled bridge of land that links Asia, Africa and Europe. Today we are used to watching TV news reports covering the region’s modern-day conflicts. It is scant consolation to know that equally world-shaping battles were being fought there thousands of years ago. These lands have always been a crossroads of peoples and the stage for a clash of cultures, and the region has bred more than its fair share of heroes, villains, invaders, saints and zealots. Their exploits were woven into a series of religious books chronicling the history of the region that later became known as The Bible. Whatever one’s religious beliefs, the Bible contains a wealth of historical fact and an insight into the contemporary culture of the region. This book investigates the background of the Bible, not only re-telling the classic stories but looking at the latest archeological evidence to provide a thoroughly up-to-date account.

5 out of 5 stars Oxford Bible Atlas.......2001-03-26

The Oxford Bible Atlas, edited by Herbert G. May, is a detailed, extremely useful book that will heighten anyone's general understanding of biblical geography. It contains more than maps as it delves into the history behind the maps, and the archaeology behind the history. It cites biblical sources but also cites apocryphal books unfamiliar to most Protestant readers. The end result is a colorful, informative work that helps place both Old and New testaments into perspective.

The book is divided into three sections, the first introducing the ancient world, then the several maps, and concluding with an archaeological overview. Part one blends seemingly incompatible topics of biblical and geologic history. It includes biblical and secular accounts of ancient history. The atlas does not attempt to expound too greatly on the "Holy Land" as being somehow superior in importance. In fact the Holy Land occupies an important crossroads between east and west more so than it stands as a regional religious center of its own merit. Those who held power such as David, Herod, or even Pontius Pilate were rarely more than a regional or even local rulers who paled in stature when compared to Alexander or any of the Roman Emperors.

The map section covers most of the primary locations mentioned in the Bible, and illustrates the vastness of the biblical lands. Many maps retain ancient place names, though the primary focus is on the Near East. There are some areas not covered, such as the city of Tarshish, Jonah's destination when he attempted to flee from his responsibilities, and the route of the Exodus does not take them across either the Red Sea, or either the modern Gulf of Suez or Gulf of Aqaba. But these apparent omissions do little to detract from the overall effectiveness of the maps.

The final section is akin to a primer on biblical archaeology. It introduces Carbon 14 dating, how a site is developed, and a brief history of archaeological efforts in the region. It shows how cultures are understood by what has survived through the ages, and helps fill gaps when written records are not available.

The end result is a very informative atlas that readers of many different backgrounds will appreciate.
