Extraordinary Resource.......2007-09-25
The Handbook of Loan Syndications and Trading should be required reading for banking lawyers, bankers and borrowers. As a law school professor teaching in this area and former banking lawyer, the book opens up an area that is quickly transforming and changing the world's credit and lending markets. I found the book to be highly readable, concise and extremely helpful. The book is equally as valuable for the expert as well as the novice.
Although the LSTA helped drive its publication, the book is not a shill for the loan syndication market. Instead, its involvement has served as a catalyst to enlist authors who are truly the best and the brightest in this area. Without its involvement, many of these authors would probably never have participated in such an undertaking.
The book is valuable on both a micro and macro basis. It provides an excellent overview of the loan syndications market, helping the reading to appreciate and understand its depth, development and sophistication. On a micro level, the Handbook provides detailed analysis and instruction for those involved in negotiating and trading loans on a day to day basis. The Handbook is also easily accessed, with an excellent table of contents, index and glossary, allowing the reader to pick and choose topics of interest.

Loan Syndication Handbook--Awesome.......2007-05-28
I recently received and read The Handbook of Loan Syndications and Trading. I purchased it because I am a lawyer who has recently begun working in the real estate and mortgage loan trading area, and wanted to get some deeper background on the loan sales and trading business operations of the financial institution clients I serve.
The Loan Sales and Trading Association (LSTA), the trade association for the loan sales and trading industry, has outdone itself with this fine book, which is a model of clarity which will set the standard in this field for years to come. It has contributions from a host of top experts in this field. In 20 years of practicing law, this work is by a country mile the most comprehensive and clearest professional book I have ever read. It does exactly the job I needed of providing the business background for a lawyer who works in this area. It would also be of great value to people who work in the financial services industry who work in the loan sales and trading area, as well as to those who work in other financial services areas who need to understand the expansive growth and functioning of the loan sales and trading field.
I cannot recommend this superb book highly enough.
comprehensive coverage.......2007-03-15
The book is strictly meant for those professionals involved in the field of putting together one of these loan arrangements or in doing trading of the created loans in a secondary market. It appears comprehensive, at least to a layman. And even for the latter, much of the text can be intelligible with careful parsing.
The biggest contrast between loans and stocks and bonds arises when considering trading. Stocks are, in some sense, fungible. So too with bonds. But the authors point out that this is certainly not so with loans. Each loan is often customised. Which adds a complexity that can defy easy valuations for trading purposes. To wit, a key section of the text addresses how to price such loans. Non-trivial.
Book Description
Paris in the '70s was running at full tilt -- a new order was coming into view amid hedonism, ambition, and outrageous decadence. This was a fashion revolution, the beginning of fashion as rock-star spectacle, and the world went wild for it. Alicia Drake writes about the dramatic collision and rivalry between two titanic geniuses, Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld, whose clashes sparked that tumultuous decade. Americans came to Paris in droves - from Andy Warhol and Jerry Hall to Bianca Jagger and Jessica Lange -- to be part of this irresistible moment. Others came just to catch sight of Karl Lagerfeld strutting around the cafs in his high heels and furs. Drake vividly captures the stunning highs and heartbreaking lows, the glorious achievements and dramas of an era when style reigned in the most glamorous of cities.

Imposible to put down, a must read for fashion lovers.......2007-08-09
A wonderfully writen and very entertaining book. Excelent read for those lovers of fashion, of Paris, of glamour and most of all of human conduct.
Portrait of an exciting carefree era left behind. Forgive my english!
The Beautiful Fall.......2007-07-04
Alicia Drake's "The Beautiful Fall" was the most fascinating and informative book about the last fifty years of the world of haute couture I have read to date. In essence it was the joint biography of Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld, but it also created a vivid picture of the Parisian fashion scene during the period.
The book was meticulously researched and filled with marvellous anecdotes and characters, including Antonio Lopez, Paloma Picasso, and Loulou de la Falaise, to name just a few.
Especially interesting was the inimitable Pierre Berge, the business brain behind Yves Saint Laurent.
I originally found out about this book in a newspaper article about the court case in France over its contents. Karl Lagerfeld sued the author, but in my opinion, it was Yves Saint Laurent whose image was tarnished. Saint Laurent was portrayed as a self-centred, immature man who became increasingly reclusive with time. Lagerfeld, on the other hand, was portrayed as a survivor thanks to his own creativity, hard work and business acumen.
This book inspired me to research Saint Laurent's collections, and I'm sorry to say that my doubts about his reputation as a "genius" were confirmed. The archives on his own website revealed that his talent did not measure up to the hype. The relentless repetition of similar designs from season to season did not equate to great creativity or fashion intelligence. If anything, Saint Laurent could be credited with creating the "Ugly Betty" look: dull suits with pussycat bow blouses, "bridesmaid" style evening dresses and safari suits.
I had to conclude that had it not been for the amazing support and business leadership of Pierre Berge, Yves Saint Laurent would have become just one of the many forgotten couturiers who featured in the history of haute couture, after his brief stint at Christian Dior.
A Tremendous Book.......2007-05-23
I used to write about fashion (I was the first person -- god help me! -- to put fashion in US magazine so many years ago), so I picked up Ms. Drake's book with a great deal of anticipation.
I loved it, sat down and read it in practically one day. It is all here -- the talent, the heartbreak, the excess, the bitchy jealous (oh -- the bitchy jealousy), and the beauty of fashion that only the French can evoke.
Say what you will, YSL was/is the master. And Ms. Drake has written a tremendous book. I would give it ten stars if I could, she knows from whence she writes, and I look forward to more of her work.
Stunning Evocation of Stars and Decade.......2007-05-23
Fashion is not a particular interest of mine; but after I heard Alicia Drake talk at the LA Times Festival of Books, I bought her bio and dove in. The Beautiful Fall is the most exciting book I've read in the last six months at least. It's a page turner, a rhapsody of sensory indulgence. Her evocations of the clothes demonstrate why she's a sought-after fashion journalist--I could see these collections, feel the fabrics, hear the pulsating music at the runway show, smell the truckloads of flowers YSL had sent from Paris to his country manor in Normandie.
You don't have to know much about fashion to be captivated by her ying-yang portrayal of YSL and Lagerfeld. The book bristles with details, the entourages sauntering off the page and into an array of dazzling parties that are so characteristic of the 70s zeitgeist.
The rivalries, the sumptuous locales, the music and drugs and personalities--it's all here. If you want an escape from the quotidian--read this book.
Must-read for anyone even remotely interested in fashion.......2007-04-08
I have been a fashion writer for about 10 years and this is absolutely one of the best fashion biographies I've read since perhaps DV by Mrs. Vreeland. The Beautiful Fall is beautifully written--a richly detailed account of Paris in the 50's through 80's packed with fashion and Parisian history, insight, and delicious gossip and scandal. You'll feel like you're there at the party and front row at shows that took place long before the televised mania over fashion began in America in the early '90s. Fabulous photos, as well.

good insight.......2007-07-16
I'm really enjoying the insight this book provides on the emotions and reasoning behind often puzzling behaviour of my little child. I am more patient with many behaviours now that I have more knowledge of where they come from and how necessary some of the less desirable behaviours are. It's also good to know what 'strange' behaviours may be on the horizon and to take toddlers seriously because their actions are often for good reason.
I recommend this book for anyone who is into reading a book that is grounded in psychological research from many experts. And the author has a lot of clinical experience to draw on.
My only concern is that much of the research is from 15-20 years ago. I wonder if her theories would change if she would have used more current research.
Oblique.......2006-05-01
I found this book to be hard to read. Take the chapter headings: who is the toddler, the challenges of being a toddler, the question of temperament... Can you tell exactly are these about? I can't.
Compare this with Your Two Year Old by Gesell Institute - chapters are: general characteristics of the age, the child with other children, techniques, accomplishments and abilities... The chapter headings indicate to me a much clearer organization. If I want to know what is an age appropriate skill, I go to the accomplishments section, if I want to know how to manage a behavioral concern, I go to techniques.
The Lieberman book also uses bold face to describe some allegedly actual scenes, and it describes several in a row in unnecessary detail without directly commenting on any of them. When it does offer advice, it is often in the form of oblique truisms, instead of simple suggestions. It just seems like a waste of words. You can infer from the truisms what she thinks is a good way to handle certain situations, but she doesn't make it easy to find.
The Gesell book is more likely to give very concise explanations of possible behaviors, reasons for the behaviors, and good ways to manage them.
I found the Gesell book much more interesting reading because it is clearly written, and also much more useful as a reference because it is well organized.
Offers a unique insight for all Parents of Toddlers.......2006-04-27
I loved this title. The reason I bought it was to try to gain some insight into my own 3yr old son's shyness and it certainly gave me a clear way to help him (and I) manage and even enjoy, that behaviour. I've read many books on raising toddlers in the past and this one is written from the unique perspective of the toddler's emotional world. I personally cannot name another parenting/toddler title written in this way.
The author has obviously spent many hours, over many years, observing her subjects and this shows in this work. Whilst the author is a mother herself, I think readers may need to remember that this is a professional work by a leading child psychiatrist/psychologist and for the most part, is written from this point of view. None the less I still found it easy to read, but not necessarily from cover to cover. The layout is well suited to picking the book up when needed, and finding out what you want to know at the time. I found the chapters on Temperment Types (only 4 are explored at length in this work), The Shy Toddler (there's a chapter on Active Toddlers as well), Issues to Negotiate (including separation anxiety, toilet training and more)of most relevance to me. There's also a chapter devoted to the toddler in childcare and making the transition that bit easier for both parent and child, no matter what your child's temperament. The many anecdotes of the various toddler temperaments peppered throughout the book make for some light hearted reading along the way (why is "no!" the most used word of the toddler).
Ms Lieberman writes with both experience, compassion and empathy in the ways of her subjects, and for those of us trying to raise them. I use my copy as a referance quite regularly and will do for some time to come.
An academic overview of the toddler's psyche.......2006-03-14
I am still in the process of reading this book. It's a bit dense, but it is very insightful. I think it's a good investment for parents wanting to know the basis for their toddler's sometimes conflicting behavior and feelings. A nice change from superficial fluff.
One of the better toddler books around........2005-11-21
I've been reading quite a few books on toddlers lately, and this is one of the best I've come across. It helped me a lot in terms of realizing what's going on with my 2-and-1/2-year-old, and I'm dealing with him a lot better since reading it. A lot better. Basically, Lieberman is talking about the one essential thing that goes into good parenting: balance. But she does a very good job of filling in the details, and helping you to really ACHIEVE that balance in your parenting.
I'm not giving it five stars, though, because there are two sections that I would really recommend skipping entirely. One has already been mentioned by another poster, and that's the bit on behavioral disorders. I don't accept mariem's criticism, though, because this really was a discrete section of the book, and easy enough to simply skip. As far as I can tell, I didn't miss anything by doing so.
The other section I skipped was the section on sleeping. A lot of this book seems to be in line with "attachment parenting" or whatever you want to call it, but on the subject of sleeping Lieberman is hard-line the other way. The section on sleeping is written entirely with the underlying premise that you will not, under almost any circumstances, be co-sleeping. Which, in my opinion, is just absurd. I think that, like most other aspects of parenting, that is a decision to be made. And in a book that otherwise does such a good job striking balance, her completely one-sided approach to this issue was out of place and, if I say so myself, pretty misguided.
But fortunately, that section is also easy to skip. And other than those two sections, it really is a great book. If you are planning on skipping those two sections, you can interpret this as a five-star review--I would highly recommend this book.

Great for enjoyment and for the classroom.......2007-04-11
I've read all the Harry Potter books in English, and I've always wanted to read them in Spanish, since I teach Spanish. I am currently teaching lower-level Spanish classes, one of which is the highest level of the lower levels. We are reading "La piedra filosofal" as a class, and, although my students are at different levels, the benefit to reading it is that they all know the story in English, and that helps their comprehension tremendously. Some students are moving slower than others, but they're really enjoying reading something that "real Spanish people" (their words) read. Definitely a good choice for intermediate level Spanish students as an introduction to advanced reading and literature.
Great Way to Brush Up on Spanish.......2007-01-03
I studied Spanish and college many (I mean many) years ago and have been trying to relearn the language. I remember the basic grammar but my vocabulary is pretty weak. I decide to read Spanish books geared for young adults and found the entire Harry Potter series (I made it through the first 4 so far) to be truly enjoyable reading.
Of the four I read, this and the second (Chamber of Secrets), were the lightest and the easiest reading. The third (Prisoner of Askaban)and especially the fourth (Goblet of Fire)increased in length and my speed in Spanish is pretty slow, so they took longer to read. The fifth (Order of the Phoenix) and six (Half Blooded Prince) are about 900 pages so I am pretty intimidated to tackle them in Spanish. I will read them in English and move on to some other Spanish books.
After reading these I viewed the DVD's of the films. They have the audio track in Spanish so you can train your ear, too.
The books follow the English versions almost exactly, so you can have a copy of it around to refer to if you find yourself confused about a certain phrase or sentence.
Poor translation of a great book.......2006-01-09
It's a shame that such a wonderful book was translated so poorly. The translator, Alicia Dellepiane, has a tendency to translate literally. For example, she translated to "have a fit" (referring to the baby, Dudley, on the second page of the book), as "tenía un berrinche." In Mexico it's "hacía un berrinche" and in much of Latin America it's "daba un berrinche." Errors such as this one abound. It's awkward for readers who know Spanish well and misleading for those who might pick up this book to study Spanish.
I rate the English version as five star.
Exelente libro - Pesima traduccion.......2005-04-12

AWFUL...find something else.......2007-05-09
I will be a transition teacher...I have a BS in Anthropology. So, I didn't have the 4 years of training that would help with this. I thought this looks like a great book. The book really doesn't help. They really don't apply what is in the book to what will be on the test other than in the practice test. I sat there taking the test and shaking my head....thinking that book didn't help me at all. So if you do use it, make sure you use other things to supplement.
Don't Rely on This Book Alone to Prepare for the FTCE.......2006-09-21
After several years out of college, this book helped me to "blow off the cobwebs" on some of the topics that aren't normally used in the day-to-day classroom (e.g., names of cognitive psychologists and their theories). The two practice tests were very helpful in determining where I needed to focus my study efforts. If you're expecting the tests to mirror the actual examination, prepare to be disappointed. The questions are similar, but rarely identical. However, the manner in which the questions are presented tracks well with the actual examination. If you're looking to ensure you have enough working knowledge of the fourteen core competencies, then you're in the right book. Use of this, and another resource (such as a CD ROM for testing) is a powerful approach for those professional educators that need refreshing. However, I would guess that those looking to study to take the test "cold" (no preparation other than the book) will find the material challenging, tedious and somewhat confusing. I did pass the test. Oh, and for those who study while relaxing - The book is printed on recycled paper that does not stand up well for use in a hot tub while sipping a Mai Tai -- but it does dry out well enough to be salvageable. ;)
GK Overkill.......2006-09-10
Very thorough and well-written, but many of the questions are above and beyond the complexity of those encountered on the General Knowledge test. I used it in conjunction with the GK test preparation book published by Cliff's Notes. The CN's volume tracks very closely with the GK test sections--and tells you precisely which section of the GK test it is addressing. I took the CN book as my main study guide and used this, the REA book, to provide me with additional practice questions of somewhat greater complexity within the context of the CN's guide. Had I done the reverse and used the REA volume as my main study guide for the GK, I'd still be studying what is ulitmately a large body of extraneous material--and feeling depressed at my ignorance. (Yes, I passed. :) )
This book provides good review..........2006-06-17
I needed to retake the Professional Ed test 14 years after college graduation. This book was a great refresher for me. At least a dozen questions from the test were very similar (though not necessarily identical) to the practice test items from the book, and that could make the difference between passing and failing for many people.
If you have absolutely no background in education, you are going to have to put a lot more time (like several months) and effort (like locating and reading many of the resources listed) into studying for this test, but this book will definitely help you to focus your efforts by showing you your strengths and weaknesses. Read the book, take the first Practice Test, and anzlyze your results (based on your missed items) to focus your study efforts. Make sure you read the explanations to help you understand any missed items.
If you have an education background, though, and need to take or retake the Prof Ed test, this book is a great investment and confidence booster.
I took the computerized version of the test, and used the study guide without the CD. I am very comfortable with computers. I am glad I didn't spend extra money for the CD. If you aren't comfortable with computers, you might want to consider purchasing the edition with the CD-ROM if you plan to take the computerized test.
Confidence builder for test takers.......2006-06-06
For someone that does not have an education degree and needs to take the exam, reading the book will give you some confidence before taking the exam, and this counts for a lot to any exam taker. The book covers a wide range of education topics and written in a reader-friendly style with only one or two typos. However since the topics are so wide, the book cannot cover them all. Only two items from this book came out in the FTCE exam I took. Just use your common sense for what the book does not cover, but does come out in the exam. You'll be surprised how much this works, sure did for me.

The one they will use in heaven ..........2007-05-21
I'm sure this is the cookbook that they'll be using in heaven. We use it all the time. While we repeat a few favorites regularly, we keep trying new ones, because we haven't found a recipe yet we didn't rave over. WOW!!!
Love the quickness but wish for more veggies included.......2006-09-10
I use this book all the time. Love the quickness of the meals since I've got small children. Just wish that more of the meals were complete meals (meat and veggies together). Most are just meat or pasta with a few veggies thrown in here or there. I still use this book a lot though and some of the recipes do include veggies. I'd recommend it to mothers/fathers of young children. If you don't like pasta or rice then don't buy it though.
I *LOVE* this book!!!.......2006-07-19
I absolutely love this cookbook! It's really fun to read and all of the recipes I've tried have been very easy and quick and have tasted great! I highly recommend this book and also their two other books: "Desperation Entertaining" and "Cheap.Fast. Good!" I own alot of cookbooks and these three are among my favorites that I use all the time!
A lifesaver.......2006-03-24
I've had this book for about 5 years now, and while I only rarely use it now- it literally saved my sanity 5 years ago.
I bought this book after seeing one of the authors on a Discovery channel daytime program. She was cute, perky and promised to have the answer to my prayers- how to cook dinner every night. At the time I had just moved 2,000 miles away from everyone I knew, had a 7 yr. old, an 18 mos. old, and was pregnant with child number 3. My husband had just taken a new job where, for the first time in over two years, he was not traveling. That meant he suddenly expected to come home every night to dinner! Sheesh! I was in no shape to suddenly start cooking, and the two kids had no desire to eat anything "weird". This book provided simple, kid friendly, easily made recipes that really hit the spot.
The recipes in the book are easily done in a half hour- 20 mins. if you follow their directions and devote the entire time to cooking. I usually am in the middle of checking homework, making phone calls and finishing laundry so it adds a few extra mins. Still, easily finished in 30.
There is a pretty good variety of recipes, especially if your family is open to eating shrimp, fish, and salads. It is broken down by groups, such as skillet meals, pasta, and breakfast for dinner (always a hit in our house). The recipes do rely on "convience" foods such as frozen, chopped onions, ready to eat mashed potatoes, and bottled ginger. I balked at the expense of many of these items, but their use is what makes it possible to get the meal on the table in 20 mins, and even with their high price the resulting meal is still cheaper than fast food.
I used this book steadily for the first two years, and then found out one of my children was Diabetic, and another one has food allergies. In the third year I took the recipes that I could adapt to the food allergies, plugged them into my Diabetes software to calculate nutrition information, and thus haven't touched the book in a while. I still make my new versions of many of their recipes, and continue to use many of their ideas for how to get a meal on the table in a short amount of time.
I also took their ideas and combined them with the "once a month" philosophy and have had good results. I buy hamburger and cook it with onion and garlic and then freeze in one pound portions. Then when the recipe calls for ground beef I just pull out my cooked meat and go from there. I also buy onions and freeze them, chopped, so when the recipe calls for "frozen, chopped onion" I pull out my baggies. Ditto the frozen peppers. This has allowed me to save money by not relying on their convience foods, but still make fresh meals in under 20 mins. That's important because I don't have the freezer space to do full "once a month cooking".
I do understand some of the complaints about the recipes lacking flavor, but when you're feeding picky kids the lack of spice is a bonus. My kids really enjoyed the "Sloppy Janes", "Schnitzel", and most of the pasta dishes. My husband has found much to enjoy, and with precooking/chopping the ingredients I find the clean up to be pretty easy. All in all, it's a winner for us. It's also one of my favorite baby gifts- along with a casserole dish filled with one of the recipes. I've had more than one new mom tell me it was a blessing.
You don't have to be desperate to love this cookbook!.......2006-01-30
I've only had this cookbook about a month, but have tried several of the recipes and have received great reviews from 4 picky children and a husband who will eat anything! Living in a small town I need recipes that take "normal" ingredients, and with 4 kids things need to go together pretty quickly with our busy schedules. The recipes are easy to follow, and you truly can put them together in 30 minutes or less. The authors of this cookbook also make the book an interesting read with great tips and ideas for a busy cook. Everything from stocking the pantry and freezer to ideas for easy short cuts. You'll love it!
