Good way to get prepared.......2007-07-04
It just makes sense, and is very thorough. Many things I would not have thought about, or gotten around to thinking about - we live in such a fast paced world that it would have been a challenge to do. Luckily, I had a cross country trip, so this gave me the time to read this book and compile my "list" of notes and apply them to my upcoming job change. Bottom line - many good new perspectives that I simply would not have thought of. Highly recommended.
Practical and Actionable. It is an excellent book on the subject of management transitions........2007-06-22
As a human resources professional, I have seen a great deal of management transition. Many succeed but some do not. Unfortunately for our people and our organizations those that do not leave a stream of damage in their wake.
Recently I wrote a review about Scott Eblin's, "The Next Level" and I called it a real disappointment. This book is not and it is a far more actionable and practical approach to managing transitions.
One of the reasons this book is so practical is that each section not only provides you with clear direction but each section also ends with an action checklist. This make creating a 90-day transition plan doable and improves your prospects for success.
Lastly, the steps from this book create a framework that a company can use to create a "transition strategy" for all its new and upwardly moving managers. This alone will enable a firm to increase their odds that a new hire or promotion will be in the "win" column.

Pro:
-"STaRS" concept is excellent. Start-ups, Turnarounds, Realignments and Sustaining success are all different scenarios that you might be thrown into, and the environment you join directly affects what you need to do.
-Checklists are helpful, when available, to boil thoughts down to the most essential elements
-There are many good tips interspersed throughout the book that are good reminders of the basics you need to adhere to in order to be successful
-Breaks the "sink or swim mindset" often associated with starting a new position
Con:
-Does not really address the time opportunity BEFORE you start a job and in my experience is a major lost opportunity that I've been able to surprise and delight. Set up pre-meetings, arranging for email/phone and a place to sit, etc. as a chance to listen and learn without the pressure to perform. Any items that can/should be done ahead of time appear to me as afterthoughts, underdeveloped, and often out of sequence in this text.
-Would not serve as a handy reference... better chapter summaries and a stronger introduction with time lines and meaty chapter outline would have been helpful both now and in the future
-I think that many good concepts like "STaRS" were underdeveloped or under leveraged... I sense more detail that was perhaps omitted
-To me, many of the illustrations were filler and did not offer additional information
-Sometimes poor or awkward word choice or idea sequence (e.g. rather than "Promote Yourself" why not just call it "Prepare Yourself" as this is what you are really saying, so why not just say it that way?)
-Real life examples were unnecessarily detailed, consuming time and space that I think could be better used by the author as he's clearly brilliant and has some great observations
-I think that the scope is too narrow, picks up after you've started the job (day 1) and neglects the opportunity (and chaos) beforehand of the interview, moving, doing "pre-work" to get your basics at work set-up
Bottom line: While there were some interesting moments, I was disappointed. The book does offer several cautionary tales of CEOs who crashed and burned, and if nothing else serves as both warning and motivation to be smarter about your transition.

I was recently "downsized" and starting a job search for the first time in 22 years. Fortunately some one recommended this book to me. Beginning a job search can be confusing and overwhelming. This book has great advice for every step of the way.
Part of my company "goodbye package" was a few months of services with a career counseling firm. Many on the concepts from the firm are contained in this book. I have just recommended this book to a friend who is unhappy in her current job.
You've probably heard people talk about the importance of networking/using your network. ("It's all in who you know.") That is a central theme in this book, as it enlightens you on how to make use of the people you know -- friends, family, co-workers, friends of friends, etc. -- to find opportunities and land interviews.

This book was a requirement for one of my master's level courses dealing with career development. We did the flower exercise and it was quite revealing. The work book which was designed to accompany this book deals precisely with this exercise. I would definitely recommend this book to those exiting high school, community college, trade school, or college at any level.

ASIN:0553371312 Getting Past No. This is an easy to read book for those who wish to understand more than the 'Win-Win, Win-Lose, etc, type of negotiation. It gives great background when one is trying to iniate a student into the area of negotation. I was able to give short, clear explanations to my daughter, who periodially wanted to know what book I was reading. If negotiation is taught in schools, this one should be a text book.

Getting Past No is the follow up book to Getting To Yes from William Ury. The book provides a simple negotiating method that is easy to understand and follow. Simply put, Ury's method is to
1) "Go to the balcony" - basically remove emotion from the negotiating process to ensure you can look objectively at the issue.
2)"Step to their side" - dig deeper into why the other side is saying no and brainstorm solutions to solve the underlying issue.
3)"Reframe" - instead of making the negotiation an "us vs. them" scenario, make it a "we" situation where you're trying to solve the problem together.
4)"Build them a golden bridge" - in a nutshell, let the other side save face.
5)"Use power to educate" - once you've gotten this far do bully you're way to close the deal. Instead, answer the other sides questions and help them build consensus with their stakeholders by educating them how the deal is good for them.
Overall, this is a very quick read and is not intended to be an all encompassing book on negotiating. It is great for beginners to learn this type of negotiating and it is highly effective for all types of situations. It is a must have in your business library!
Got to Yes.......2007-09-07
This is the sequel to "Getting to Yes" by Ury. I liked the first book better. This one tackles the issue of what you can do when the other party really does not want to cooperate, while "Getting to Yes" assumes a greater willingness to collaborate. The book is okay, just not great. If you trying to get a basic education on negotiation, reading both books would be a good start.

This book gives you the down-low on what to expect in network marketing without making you feel like you don't even want to try. It is very informative and gives lots of real-life examples which ring true to my experiences with network marketing. There are many books like this out there with the methods are out of date. Most successful network marketers build their fortune on the backs of others. As someone who has taken a circuitous route to the world of IT, the book, IT Manager's Handbook, Second Edition: Getting your new job done has helped me get a handle on all of the territory working in IT encompasses. When I first started working at my current IT position at a small company it seemed that my job's duties were coming at me from every direction. The authors, Bill Holtsnider and Brian D. Jaffe, do a great job addressing the variety of problems and solutions that come with managing IT. This book would best serve someone crossing the thresholds of working purely in technology or mainly in management.
At smaller businesses like where I work, it is fairly common to not have an "IT manager" or even an IT staffer. Instead often a manager, engineer, or administrative assistant will be pressed into IT service. The IT Manager's Handbook would be a valuable `read' for such an accidental IT manager.

This is wonderful book explaining what etiquette is really about. One will learn everything -- from how to dress, table manners, office setup, how to print business cards to how to prepare resume. I would recommend to everyone to read it regardless if they are working or not. While I do not agree with some of the rules regarding "who pays for lunch" - I would say that this is a book everyone should read and understand because it will improve their interactions with others.

By my having AS, along with ADHD, I was looking for a book that would give me some insight on the type of careers that people with AS may gravitate towards and how those with AS cope and succeed in an NT work environment.
For careers, not much insight as the gist was to try and make a career out of your special interest, which can vary among aspies. This is not necessarily a bad thing as it means that the career options are many for those of us with AS.
My second objective of learning how aspies can function effectively in the workplace was more disappointing. Most of the advice was things you could find in traditional career books. Not much on how to interview well, given our social challenges, or how to promote accomplishments because of the tendency to want to work alone. These are just two examples.
The book does a fair job of explaining AS and how it could present challenges in the workplace, but all in all, nothing insightful that can be used to find or succeed in a career.
Autism Education.......2006-11-04
Most of this book offers parents assistance in educational needs of their lower functioning autisitc children. However, the list of possible job types is limited to manual laborer jobs. After having worked (and lived) with children in the autistic spectrum, I believe they are capable of much more than this book offers them. I would liketo see the authors add a list of secondary schools that offer admissins to children on the autistic spectrum along with assistance in the application process.

Dr. Grandin has taken her knowledge, expertise and sensitivity one step further in Developing Talents: Careers for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. She offers many ideas for those affected by or those working with these individuals. This area is filled with people of talent who are underemployed. An example of one of the suggestions offered - an individual who is interested in cartoons and spends their days drawing - all day - being encouraged to go to a museum of cartooning, learning about different kinds of cartoons, the history of cartoons which expands their interest - meeting others with the same interest. It is not enough to have a talent or the intellectual ability to understand complex things. Without work, Dr. Grandin explains, her life would not have had order, content or meaning. She covers many different kinds of jobs that people on the autism spectrum can accommodate to and ones that would be more difficult for them. The book is well thought out and because Dr. Grandin is herself on the spectrum and spends so much of her time speaking to others at her many presentations she has analyzed a great deal of what works and what does not. This book is an absolute must read! I run a large group for parents, professionals and individuals and it is one of my first recommendations. This book gives concrete suggestions and hope.

As a parent of a teenager with Aspergers, alot of Ms. Gradin's recommendations confirmed what I already thought: sell the skills not the personality, go into areas where your interests/fixations lie and consider working as a consultant in your area of expertise. Finding recommendations I already thought of didn't make me feel like those parts of the book were a waste. On the contrary, it is nice to have affirmation from an outside source, particularly one intimately knowledgable of autism.
Other recommendations she makes were new to me. I had not thought of them, but they make alot of sense. She encourages people to go out and interview people in their field of choice to learn what they can about the industry. For neurotypical people, this would be akin to networking. For autistics, it is couched in a manner far easier for them to manage. People on the autism spectrum are probably not going to be good at social networking. But they would be very good at the interviews she recommends. She takes classic job networking and reworks it into research. I know my son LOVES researching more information on his interests, but digs in his heels at the thought of socializing.
Ms. Gradin also discusses the different styles of learning/thinking and which jobs are good for those type of people. My son happens to have amazing visual spatial abilities and is currently taking CAD in high school where he is getting straight A's. He now wants to become an architect which is exactly one of the fields Ms. Gradin reommends for visual spatial people on the spectrum.
Other beneficial feature of the book are the list of sources for information, examples of people in a wide selection of fields and Temple Gradin's personal observances.
I'm greatful to Ms. Gradin for writing books on autism. As hard as I try to understand my son, the fact that my brain is wired differently then his means I will always approach him with a bias, unintentional or otherwise. Her books clarify and explain things I could ponder for years and still not quite grasp.
I would also highly recommend her Animals In Translation book.

The author does a great job of helping one to realize and appreciate that a "dead end" may be door to one of the best opportunities for growth one will ever receive in life. He helps one to address the fact that oftentimes being "stuck" is a very good and positive thing. The title of my review is appropriate because he obviously has worked with people, of different ages, who have felt stuck, how they got through it, and how positive it ended up being for most of them.
Buitler does an excellent job of acknowldging and dealing with the feelings that accompany "stuckness." In my opinion, chapter two "Feeling Stuck and Doubting Ourselves" is worth the price of the book alone. "The Accuser" is who he calls the Superego who relentlessly doubts and questions "stuck" people. He helps the "stuck" to see how pathetic "the Accuser" really is, how and when he often strikes and what "the Accuser" really is: "it's concern is to punish us and stop us from taking that action which would allow us to experience new possibilities." (p. 32)
This book is both psychologically insightful and of great practical help. It helped me a lot.

Tim Butler's latest book addresses takes a creative approach to "getting unstuck", which he calls "impasse," in a clear, engaging and enjoyable read for coaches and clients alike.
Butler states that shifting to a new understanding of ourselves `is a "dropping down" into more imaginative and less conditioned ways of looking at ourselves and the world. We shift from cognitive analysis based on an old mental model to information that comes from giving our essence a chance to speak in the fresh language of image and metaphor. . . A new life vision has to come from employing all aspects of our consciousness . . . It has to arise from deep intuition.' I have just started this book, but it has hit home already. The Deep Dive exercises are really good and helps you resolve things in your life. I Love the way the book takes you from one place to another to clear up issues in your life. I think this is a must read for all.

If you're willing to work his process and exercises, you may well find that "new path" to take you to the next level.

Butler is a researcher and business psychologist who works with people who have hit a "dead end" in their life. Many of the stories in the book involve students who have gone to business school, have a number of options in front of them, but nothing seems quite right. His approach to getting unstuck is to allow the inner thoughts and passions to direct us towards what we probably already know the answer to be, but we just haven't tuned into it. Many of these exercises are covered in sidebar entries called "deep dives". These sidebars go into detail about how an exercise works and how to do it. For instance, "free attention" is the technique of allowing your focus to reside on a particular part of the body, letting the sensations and feelings wash over you without judgement. When your mind wanders, you've lost your free attention and need to refocus on the body part. This then shifts to focus on breathing, and the goal is to let emotions run their course and learn from them. Another technique is paying attention to images that form in your mind. These images can often be formed from deeper core feelings and emotions, and taking the time to reflect and analyze them can cast light on your situation and point to a new path. Probably one of the most in-depth exercises is the 100 Jobs list. You choose 12 jobs from a list of 100 that appeal to you on an emotional basis. Scoring the exercise involves categorizing the types of attributes that make up those jobs. By grouping and classifying the different underlying traits, you'll see trends such as leadership, persuasion, coaching, etc. These trends can then be used to examine your direction and make corrections...
On the whole, the ideas are solid. I can see where working through the process could lead to dramatic changes that might not be explored by a more cursory examination of your life. But while the book is designed to be used on your own, I think it'd work best if you had someone skilled in these techniques working with you. It's hard to be objective about your own mind, and an external viewpoint would help keep things focused. I also think that the material would appeal most to business professionals who are at a career crisis. Most of the material is slanted towards job-related issues, and the stories are largely about college and grad school students. While anyone could use these ideas in various areas of their lives, I think the "average" person might find it all a bit daunting...
How to avoid a dead end or to find a better path to follow .......2007-03-11
Well before reading the final chapter of this book, I concluded that Timothy Butler is both a relentless empiricist (i.e. being keenly observant of human experience, especially his own) and a relentless pragmatist (i.e. leveraging this experience to apply lessons learned in terms of what works...and what doesn't). In the Introduction he focuses on the six phases of what he characterizes as "The Cycle of Impasse." They are (1) the arrival of the [given] crisis and impasse, (2) its deepening and the attendant re-emergence of unresolved issues, (3) the dropping of old assumptions and the opening up to new information, (4) the shift to a new way of understanding our situation, (5) the greater recognition of deep patterns of our personality, and eventuaolly (6) the decision to take concrete action." Once having carefully presented the "what," Butler then focuses almost all of his attention on the "how" of "getting unstuck."
It is important to keep in mind that as Butler duly acknowledges, crises vary (sometimes significantly) in terms of their relative importance; also, impasses also vary in terms of their nature and extent; moreover, "getting unstuck" from one crisis does not mean that it will never recur; in addition, most people find themselves struggling to cope with more than one crisis at a time; finally, and obviously, its is highly advisable to prevent a crisis, if at all possible, and thus eliminate the need to get "unstuck" from one.
The subtitle suggests another interesting aspect of this book's appeal: "How Dead Ends Become New Paths." I am among those who believe that every problem and, especially, every failure offers an invaluable learning opportunity. Long ago, Jack Dempsey suggested that "champions get up when they can't." More recently Warren Bennis and Robert Thomas, in Geeks and Geezers and then in Leading for a Lifetime, assert that most (if not all) great leaders - at one time - experienced a "crucible" which forged qualities of character they would not otherwise develop. In Authentic Leadership and then in True North, Bill George makes essentially the same point. With all due respect to Yogi Berra (reputed to have suggested that "When you get to a fork in the road, take it"), what seem to be "dead ends" can become "new paths" if - huge if -- we can summon the courage and sustain the determination to take "concrete action."
To this last point, Butler insists - and I agree - that "our lives do not change without action. The impasse crisis has its resolution in a decision to make specific choices that change our day-to-day reality...Know what the action needs to be, and actually performing it, is what seals the cycle of learning and change and allows us to move forward."
I commend Butler for providing three valuable appendices: "Continuing the Journey" (an annotated bibliography), "A Note on Impasse and Depression" (differences between symptoms of clinical depression and symptoms at impasse), and "Scoring the One Hundred Jobs Exercise" (a self-diagnostic to accompany an exercise in Chapter 4). All of those who read this book find themselves "stuck" from time to time. On occasion, the "impasse" is minor and only temporary (e.g. missing several days at work because of having the flu). On other occasions, the situation is much more serious and seems hopeless, or at least daunting (e.g. an extended period of unemployment as bills pile up). Butler seems genuinely determined to help his readers cope effectively with all manner of crises, especially those which may seem hopeless. Obviously, it remains for each reader to determine the value of this book to her or his own circumstances.
When thinking about the many benefits that Butler's book offers, I am reminded of a prayer generally thought to have been composed by Reinhold Niebuhr: "Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

No Excuses For Milady.......2007-03-12
As this is the ninth edition of what is alledgedly the most widely used text for beginning estheticians, then the persistent use of mediocre-to-poor science is inexcusable. Doesn't the author consult *anyone* in the scientific/medical community before sending this thing off to the printers? It is *not*, for instance, an established fact that vitamin A protects human beings from cancer of any sort. There is certainly data that looks promising, but that's it. And since vitamin K is manufactured in the intestinal tract, why is paper wasted insisting that students, many of them fresh out of high school, should be memorizing the names of the food sources of this abundant nutrient? Many of these kids struggle with the science that *is* relevent to the profession they hope to enter. My husband is a doctor, I'm an RN, and neither of us has ever used the term "non-striated" muscle. It's "smooth" muscle, for crying out loud! And while I'm on the subject of muscles, absolutely none - not one - healthcare professional I'm acquainted with has ever learned anything about the "belly" of the muscle! No matter - 18 year-old kids have to learn what is not required of first-year medical students. Please. Yes, as a basic introductory text it has much to recommend it; all the more reason to get the science right. S.T., RN, Rochester, NY

This is for esthetician students. The information is basic and well organized. The photos sometimes do not follow the text but it reads easily.

Most of the chapters are well written and understandable. I have found some discrepancies in the information, and feel that the book could have been edited a little better. The book explains sanitation but does not go into the correct method of sanitizing all items that one would use during a service. The material is quite dry, and could really use something to get the student excited about the occupation that they have chosen.
