Book Description

Miriam Swanson is thoroughly provoked and she doesn't mind letting you know. Twenty years ago her husband Charles, a powerful attorney with one of the last remaining white shoe law firms in New York, dumped her for a younger woman nearly half her age. Obviously it happens all the time and it's not exactly news, but what's fascinating is to watch Miriam evolve from pathetic to spectacular. Perfectly proper Miriam's great metamorphosis results from the arrival of a little red neck school teacher, Liz, from Nowhere, Alabama. Liz is Miriam's tenant along with Kevin, a 50 something gay man who is Miriam's best friend. Liz is everything that Miriam is not: young and thin. They constantly clash. Then finally, she meets a man named Harrison who changes her into a gal named Mellie.

Miriam spins out from the revolving door of her postured life as a Manhattan quasi socialite while she thirsts, no, starves for recognition. How did she become what she hates the most and what does she endure to realize it? And where are the answers? It takes a few spins, dips and one spectacular fall until Miriam gets her head on straight. Then in a whoosh she's off to see her mother in the enchanted and mysterious land of Sullivans Island, deep in the Lowcountry of South Carolina.

3 out of 5 stars Love Dottie's books, but...........2007-10-17

I love stories created by Dottie. Most of her books, for me, I enjoy immensely...but this one just wasn't up to her wonderful standards. I wish I'd had waited for the paperback! I didn't care for the cover either and tried not to let that influence me, but maybe I should have! It won't stop me from buying and reading though...I still love ya Dottie and will be back.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2007-10-14

This was the first book I read by Dorothea Benton Frank, and I would never read another again. I thought the story was predictable, the dialog was cheesy, and overall it was shallow and mind-numbing. I can't imagine who the crowd is for this book. If you like something thought-provoking, this isn't it. If you like romance novels, this isn't it either. It's just a painful read with way more text than necessary to tell the story of a middle-aged woman trying to feel better about her life. The author assumes you will relate to the main character, but unless you are a middle-aged woman with a poor relationship with your kids, and feel extreme bitterness toward men, you probably won't relate to her much. If this is the case, you won't be as excited as I'm sure the author hopes when her female character makes "witty" comments that make the men stutter all over their words and feel defeated.

Also, the characters are eating or drinking in almost every chapter and you get to hear all about it! Sound like fun? Trust me, it's painful.

3 out of 5 stars Still her fan.......2007-09-23

This one was better than the previous one but not as good as her earlier books (Sullivan's Island, Plantation). I know you can do it, Dottie, so keep on writing! But give us more of that "South Carolina moon " atmosphere.

2 out of 5 stars Just not a Dot Frank fan, I guess!.......2007-09-07

Okay, here it is...loved "Sullivan's Island," haven't liked anything she's written since. STILL too many exclamation points (see my review of "Pawley's Island). Characters and plots unbelievable (main character, Miriam, a middle-aged uptight lady, has wild naked sex on beach with someone she just met, years of estrangement from her sons are overturned in an instant with everybody loving everybody, etc., etc.) and bad editing in places (in one spot a character is called "Laura," I believe and then later in the paragraph is called "Diane." There was some line about "are they regular or decaf," that I read three times and still don't get. Mirian is irritating and selfish but overnight does a complete 180 degree turnaround. It's pretty bad when the best character in the book is a parrot. I love South Carolina and would like to love this author but I just can't. Read Mary Alice Monroe instead, folks, for a Southern author who creates believable characters in plausible situations that might actually occur in real life. Oh well, at least this one didn't have the usual black servant found in most of this author's works.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful and refreshing story.......2007-08-29

Dorothea Frank has created another wonderful story and I just thought Land of Mango Sunsets was just a great read. The characters are clever and appealing especially Miriam Swanson. Actually, I felt that she gave all the variety of splendid characters real feelings that I could relate too. This is a great book to take to the beach and read. It's an easy read and with the wonderful descriptive scenes of South Carolina, that Ms. Frank portrays you feel like you are roaming around in the beautiful state. I hope I haven't given away too much of the story for those who haven't read it. In summary, it's a delightful and refreshing story with humor, romance, a bit of mystery, and some valid issues concerning our environment. Highly recommend.

Book Description

Soon after the cats reached their new home by the lake, ThunderClan's medicine cat Leafpool received an ominous warning from StarClan: Before there is peace, blood will spill blood, and the lake will run red. As the Clan slowly recovers from a devastating badger attack, Leafpool can't help but wonder . . . do her prophetic dreams mean there are even worse dangers still in store for the warrior cats?

At the same time, shadows of the past continue to haunt the forest as some old friends struggle to find their place, others appear to be lost forever, and an old enemy finds a new way to resurface in a quest for dark revenge. A sinister path is unfolding, and the time is coming for certain warriors to make the choices that will determine their destiny . . . and the destiny of all the Clans.

5 out of 5 stars Sunset (Warriors: The New Prophecy, Book 6).......2007-10-21

I loved it. The Warriors series is awesome. My daughter and I are hooked. We have the entire series and I can't wait until the new release in December 2007. We like the way each book picks up and continues. Sunset was very exciting and had a great ending. I'm a Warrior Cat fan!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A satisfying ending to a great series!.......2007-10-20

Okay, you've read about Firepaw\Fireheart\Firestar battling, making friends, fullfilling phrophecys ( I didn't spell that right, right? )and grieving for friend's deaths. I finsished the origional Warriors series with great saddness, only to be excited when I picked out the New Prophecy books at my library. I read about the son of Tigerstar- Brambleclaw, and Firestar's children, Leafpool and Squirrelflight. Admittedly, I thought the first two books dragged a bit, and then I read the 3,4,5 books. Finally, I read Warriors: Sunset. Here is this delightful book's plot: Brambleclaw is torn between his loyalty to his Clan, or to his thirst for power, which is tempted by his evil father, Tigerclaw. Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw finally love eachother again, and Leafpool struggles with gaining her Clan's trust after running away (sorry, but I'm giving nothing much away ). It is a suspencful book, finishing with a superb climax. Here are some hints: Stormfur and Brook are back, Hawkfrost may have his father's dark heart, and there is a new deputy. This book deals with love, loyalty, secrets, trust, power and the ever-lasting good and bad. Believe me, you'll love this book, 'cause I sure did! Erin did a great job in wrapping up the series!
Sincerely,
Moonwhisker

1 out of 5 stars A Whole Lotta Buildup for Nothing (SPOILERS).......2007-10-06

I think the things that bothered me the most about Sunset was that the completely jumped-up prophecy Yellowfang fed Firestar came down to the death of a single cat. Does anyone else out there feel that if they were told, more or less, that slaughter would drown them in blood, they'd still be waiting for the real thing to happen?
Starclan: Oh no. Yeah, the cat bleeding into the lake is what we meant.
Firestar: Gotcha. Whoof, sure glad that's over.
I think I'd be yelling at my ancestors to get a handle on hyperbole, because I as a Clan leader would have enough to worry about ASIDE from dire threats of war, death, etc., etc. StarClan continually irritates me, because they react in limited ways: A) They refuse to help you; B) They refuse to lay it out pat for you, and instead throw out riddles and obscure prophecy when they DO decide to help you; C) They chide you with the fact that they do know what's coming, and man, it's going to suck, but they can't do anything to stop it; or D) Tell you there's nothing you can do to stop it, either.
And let's not forget that Warrior Code everyone's gotta uphold! There have to be 4 Clans, but not really, because there were 5, and StarClan just decided not to tell you. Warriors, if a Clan dies because of tragedy, neglect, and apathy, that's fine. But don't you dare ruin the sacred laws by making friendships that form us all into one big Clan! Don't forget that StarClan is all-powerful, except when they tell you they aren't, but block the moon out to keep you thinking that. A cat is supposed to help any cat that asks for it, but Clan leaders who don't want to lose face by admitting they have starving elders and sick kits need not obey that rule. And while we're calling a spade a spade, there's not a single good deed of Firestar's that goes unpunished or unnoticed.
The worldbuilding of Warriors is always pounded and broken to fit the plot. Surely, since there are hundreds of other books out there that are actually able to seal every plot hole, there's something better you could buy for your kids?

5 out of 5 stars Warriors rocks!!!!!!!.......2007-10-04

The devastating badger attack left me stunned, the death of Cinderpelt made me cry hard, cold tears. When Leafpool got the prophecy I was eager to find out what would happen next.Later, I couldn't believe that CHEATER Tigerstar was still after Firestar, with his sons Brambleclaw and Hawkfrost to help him(Brambleclaw didn't want to kill his leader). When Brambleclaw had to kill Hawkfrost to save Firestar it made me feel joyful that he was dead.Overall, I love this book.It screams awesome!!!!

Book Description

Prominent restaurateur Teddy Martin is facing charges in his wife’s brutal murder. But he’s not going down without spending a bundle of cash on his defense. So his hotshot attorney hires P.I. Elvis Cole to find proof that Detective Angela Rossi tampered with the evidence. Rossi needs a way back to the fast track after falling hard during an internal investigation five years ago. But Cole needs to know if she’s desperate enough to falsify the case against Martin in order to secure her own position. As Cole and his partner Joe Pike work their way through a tangle of witnesses and an even greater tangle of media, they begin to suspect that it’s not the police who are behind the setup.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed the audiotape.......2007-05-19

Lots of the reviews here give this one 3 or 4 stars. Perhaps it was the format, perhaps it was the end of the school year rush for me and the welcome respite this book provided. Perhaps I just liked it better. Nevertheless, it was a good thriller, despite the fact that problems with Elvis and Joe's case are telegraphed from miles away.

My audio version was read by a narrator who has done multiple tours as a reader for Robert B. Parker's Spenser novels. So, the listener is naturally drawn to make comparisons between Elvis Cole/Joe Pike/Lucy and Spenser/Hawk/Susan. Readers familiar with them both can see the analogies already. "Sunset Express" is probably the most Spenser-like of the Cole novels I've read or listened to so far. Lots of relationship discussion (for Cole anyway, a little less than average for Spenser).

I give this one a grade of A-

3 out of 5 stars Decent.......2007-05-01

I'm a big Robert Crais fan but I think he can do better than this one. While it was an exciting read, it was not very original because it draws too many comparisons to the OJ Simpson case. For example, you have a very wealthy man with lots of connections who hires a dream team of a defense counsel to represent him after getting charged with murdering his wife.

Again, there were some good dialog and action scenes but the storyline was not very original.

3 out of 5 stars Easy Entertaining Read.......2007-03-05

Elvis Cole is hired by a famous Hollywood lawyer to investigate a police officer who found evidence that led to the arrest of the lawyer's client. The client is a wealthy restaurant owner. As it turns out Elvis is being used by the lawyer. There's lots of things going on and Elvis eventually discovers the truth. His girlfiend Lucy comes for a vist and Joe Pike gets on board the investigation. This is not one of the better Robert Crais's novels but it easy to read and entertaining. ( B).

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-10-30

This book is fast reading although it took about 150 pages to get going. The author balances the intertwined stories very well yet appears to do little to make the characters that he has created seem real. They are cardbord cutouts with little substance to them. Although not great, it certainly does qualify as a fast and easy read even though much of the story is quite predictable.

4 out of 5 stars Is evidence really evidence? (3.75 *s).......2006-05-28

Being a Crais first-timer, one is immediately struck by the similarities to Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series: set in LA, the main character, Elvis Cole, lives in a house on a hill on stilts where coyotes and hawks are observed and heard, the geography of LA is amply described, and romantic pursuits seem to be difficult for one reason or the other. Both Harry Bosch and Elvis Cole are good guys that are not fully appreciated, though Bosch operates within the LAPD and Cole is a PI.

SUNSET EXPRESS is essentially a story of what money can buy a defendant: an expensive team of lawyers that is quite capable of manipulating public opinion, if not actually creating evidence, to favor the client. Cole is hired by high-priced lawyer Jonathan Green to track down leads/tips that could lead to the exoneration of well-to-do entrepreneur Teddy Martin accused of murdering his wife. Cole becomes a bit of celebrity as his findings make the local news in orchestrated press briefings. But Cole's uneasiness ratchets up when his conclusions are distorted by the Green team.

The book is well-paced with a sound plot, though some contend that it is not Crais' strongest. The character development is rather minimal but Cole's attempt at forming a relationship with Louisiana lawyer Lucy Chenier is appealing and revealing. Recommended - will read others.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to start a conversation about Christianity.......2007-05-29

If you are a youth or young adult and you are looking for a light book to pass on to a non Christian (or wavering Christian) friend, this is it. It's also a good book for any Christian who likes a good read. The writing style is unique and often humorous. It reads like journal entries so don't expect perfect grammer (complete sentences). I only say this because the only one star rating mentions this. If you check his profile, you will notice many of his reviews are negative though so I don't know how trustworthy a reviewer he is for the under 30 crowd. I, however, work with youth group at church, lead the young adults ministry, am an adolescent counselor, and am actually under 30. Therefore, I think I have a pretty good grip on what this age group likes. I have many friends who have read this book (ages 16-27) and not one of them has disliked it. I think that says a lot. It makes you think, and gives you the opportunity to discuss your faith with others in an open and honest way. Isn't that all that really matters in the end?

5 out of 5 stars GOD, brilliant Lord, yours is a household name........2007-04-27

"Let the knowledge of His transcendence bring us back to life. Let it flow like blood to sleeping limbs, and feel them tingle as they awake in awe. Shake life back into your legs and let them carry you running with wind and thunder. Shake life back into your chest and let your heart beat in pounding reverence. Let praise come face to the ground, trembling with life an awareness that we are found by a holy God."
- pg. 70, on Psalm 29

This book for me was absolutely breathtaking. In it, Crowder uses the ancient practice of "Lectio Divina", which he later explains. This method consists of reading Scripture not to try and pull things out of it, but rather slowly reading through a passage of Scripture, chewing it up, and just being quiet and meditating on what you just heard. Breathe it in slowly, absorb the perfume of God's Word, let it settle in on you. Then, after some time, when settled, write your own response.

Crowder examines 21 different Psalms from the Old Testament (starting w/ Ps. 1 and ending w/ Ps. 150) in Lectio Divina style. In each of these very short chapters, he starts by writing the Psalm for the reader. All Psalms are taken from Eugene Peterson's "The Message Remix". This was for me reading these 21 Psalms in a new light than ever before. And the view was breathtaking. (I'm buying a Psalm book in "The Message" now, because I was so taken aback.)

After the Psalm, the reader will find Crowder's own "lectio divina" on that Psalm. Crowder is an extremely unique writer and an amazing communicator. I have included a quote from his Psalm 29 "lectio divina" at the top of the post. Crowder will start off talking about something in his life that seems totally unrelated to the Psalm itself; meeting Richard Simmons, taking up photography, his childhood desire for a nickname, going to the bathroom, his own short term memory, the childhood bully, all kinds of stuff. But by within the next few pages he's turned it around into something grand, something magnificent, a breathtaking view of the Psalm. He discusses individual and corporate worship, the name of Yahweh, the transcendence of our God, His amazing love, his vast creativity, hope in the midst of despair, God's glory, and on and on.

In the beginning of the book, Crowder discusses that his purpose is to help the reader understand the "praise habit". How, just like a little kid finding a toy who can't help but hold it up triumphantly and show the world his new prise, praise for our God should flow forth uninterrupted from our lives. How we find God in the pew at church, in the Bible at home, and in a chicken sandwich at Arby's. God is here among His people.

In this book you will laugh out loud at Crowder's humor, raise your eyebrows at his unexplainable (self-admitted) quirkiness, and wonder at his truly amazing ability to communicate the God of the universe to the human soul.

Does a nun have to decide what to wear in the morning? No, she just puts on her habit... day in, and day out. And so should we, our Praise Habit, until it becomes "habit"ual.

On the back cover is a reference to Psalm 64:10; "... Good-hearted people, make praise your habit." There's a brief, three paragraph synopsis of the book, starting out, "Praise is something we are, not something we do." This first of Crowder's books is, on the back cover, recommended by Donald Miller ("Blue Like Jazz", "To Own A Dragon", "Through Painted Desserts") and Brian McLaren (pastor, author of "A New Kind of Christian", voice for the today's emergent church).

I recommend this book as one of the best you'll ever read. I would also encourage you to check out his second book, "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven, but Nobody Wants to Die, or (The Eschatology of Bluegrass)".

5 out of 5 stars praiseworthy!.......2007-03-09

i bought this book and everybody wants to go to heaven.. at the same time, this is my fave by far. it's one of those books you know you'll read over and over. in fact, i have to re-buy it because i gave it to my pal for her birthday! it's very easy to read, very personal, i like the personal recollections that david included. i would definitely recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars For a casual fan, a good read.......2007-01-18

David Crowder tackles the topic of praise in a very readable and interesting manner in 'Praise Habit'. THe topic of worship and how verbal, sung praise fits into worship, and whether or not it is a fluffy or necessary part of Christianity is a hot topic, and Crowder makes a strong argument for singing praise to be a part of our lifestyle, that we have to glorify God the way religious wear their habit--it has to be a visible sign of our commitment to Christ.

The only thing I didn't like about this book was that about half of it was just psalms with reflections, and Crowder uses "The Message: Remix" translation, which I can't stand. This is probably just a personal dislike, and the rest of the book is great.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable devotional if a little flat in spots........2006-12-15

Praise Habit by David A. Crowder is a nice devotional about finding God in everyday places where we don't normally look for him. Crowder does a terrific job of reminding us why it's so important to praise God in all things. Each chapter starts with a Psalm from The Message Bible. The language is very modern; it can occasionally be off-putting, but for the most part brings new depth to the verses. After the Psalm, Crowder gives the reader a short anecdote, usually humorous, about events in his own life. Where the book stumbles is in the connecting of the Psalms to these stories. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. I didn't connect with this book the way that I like to with a devotional, but it was still an enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars California Wine Country: A Sunset Field Guide.......2007-05-14

Ordered this book as a gift and received it just before we were heading for visit to California. We decided to keep it and use it for ourselves. We visited areas "off the beaten path" and were delighted to visit some of the wineries highlighted and to find others on our own. Would have liked maps to have given greater detail, but that would be our only quibble.

5 out of 5 stars Best garden book.......2007-01-05

If you want to know anything about plants, this is the book to buy. Have looked thru a bunch of other books, and none of them even come close to the variety of plants covered and depth of info. If want to buy only one book, this is the one.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Complete Reference.......2000-08-21

This is the most complete reference I have in my collection of garden books. I have yet to find a plant variety that is not in this book. Truly a "must have" for any gardener.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!.......2000-07-17

One of the first books I reach for when I feel I need to look something up. Good for beginners and hardy gardening veterans.

Contains a plant encyclopedia with botanical names. Detailed Climate zone maps and climate descriptions. Does not use USDA zones but a more thorough and detailed zoning system. All zones are described in detail. Zoning includes southern regions of Canada (very useful) but not all of it. (If you live in the northern portion of the provinces you will be disappointed it's not truly for Canada like it claims.) The only thing I wish for are Latitude and Longitude lines on the zone maps.

Also contains: Plant selection guide, Pest and disease reference, Botanical name guide and a gardening dictionary all of which are well explained for beginners.

One of the best of the many general gardening books available that I've picked up. Very handy if you move around quite a bit.
