For those who are touched by this book, I want you to know that there is something we can't explain. We all have paranormal abilities like John Edward, James Van Praagh, Sylvia Browne, and Char Margolis to name a few. The book is reassuring at times because it makes you feel like you're not alone in this world as some people might perceive us to be weird or strange. The book is about John Edward's biography and is ever evolving psychic abilities. He talks about getting depressed or iritable around negative events. I got this book probably before September 11, 2001 so it doesn't have anything to do with it. For me, I recognized that power and fear when the predictions come true. I'm not so much into contacting the deceased as I am concerned with the future but at the same time, our psychic abilities don't always work to our advantages like getting lottery numbers or picking the right mate. In fact, we can pick for others but we just can't pick for ourselves. John's honesty comes through in his writing and it's an okay biography as well as reassuring that this is not all there is but I want more answers especially about our past lives, our spirit guides, and why we're drawn to certain people. Maybe that could be his next book.

One Last Time was terrific! John Edwards did an excellent job of explaining his gift with the world in a very pragmatic and humorous way. The explanations of the "unexplained", which may have happened to you or those close to you, are sensible and can provide even the most skeptical with a level of comfort not easily found.

I'm coming back to German language learning after a long hiatus - about thirty years since High School German. This book is a great place to start; it provides interesting history of the German language, discussion of various parts of speech, and always ties it back to analogous words and phrases in English. There may be more advanced texts available, but this is an excellent starting point.

Ed Swick is a good writer. He presents difficult material in a very clear manner.I have a couple of books by him and I have not been disappointed. And so it is with this book. This book introduces the student fully to the essentials of German grammar and vocabulary. He progresses in an orderly, logical fashion, starting with some background info on the language and progressing to the close relationship between English and German and showing the student how this can be a boon to his study. He then begins the grammatical discussion by introducing the German noun and its peculiarities, such as gender, case and the formation of plurals. In the gender section, he points out quite correctly that most German books tell the student that he must simply memorize the gender of each noun, but that German children do not do this in learning their own language. He the presents the patterns they learn in mastering their mother tongue. He also teaches similar patterns for learning the plurals of the nouns. Working with these patterns, one begins to develop a 'feel' for them in a relatively short period of time. So does Mr. Swick simplify what are all too often two very frustrating aspects of beginning German grammar.The following sections on verbs etc. are handled in a similarly efficient manner.
That said, this book does leave one thing to be desired. There is a low ratio of exercises to material. He gives lots of material, but (in my opinion) not enough exercises to master it. Therefore, I would strongly recommend buying a workbook, such as Schaum's Outline of German Grammar, and using it to reinforce the lessons of Mr. Swick's book. When it comes time to hone your German to a fine edge, check out another book by Mr. Swick; it is part of the 'Practice Makes Perfect' series and it is called 'German Pronouns and Prepositions'. I chose the Everything series as my entry point to the German language over other options, including the Dummies series, largely on the advice of reviews, and I was not disappointed. Beyond the high-school textbook quality illustrations on the cover and the two-tone black and green print (which I personally find attractive), you will find a well-organized text designed to bring the reader from essentially nothing to a basic understanding of the workings of the German language.
It is important to note that my experience with this text has been colored by the fact that I have studied other languages before, and so knowing the basic ways and terminology of language study made me slightly more than a beginner when I picked up the book, although I had no prior experience with the formal study of German.
If you have studied languages and are familiar with noun cases and verb tenses and such, you may find the ordering of chapters illogical at first, since they skip from one area of language to another, rather than focusing exclusively on nouns until they are covered and only then moving to verbs, as other language texts may do. However, I found when reading from cover to cover, the order of the chapters helped to break things up a bit, so as not to overwhelm the beginning student, although some (such as those on time and numbers) are modular enough to skip ahead to if need be. Also, the introductory section does its job well enough, with an overview of German pronunciation, which is helpful, although no substitute for hearing the language pronounced by native speakers--for this I recommend audio CD's, unless you are fortunate enough to have access to German speakers. A few notes about the pronunciation guide: The author uses a home-grown, and I think sometimes inconsistent, method of phonetic transcription which is designed to be intuitive for a native English speaker. Also, phonetic spellings of words (placed in parentheses) cease after the first few chapters.
One thing I especially appreciate about the book is the author's friendly, encouraging tone. Swick has a way of disarming the language so that it does not seem too scary, and his writing projects a confidence that a beginning student should appreciate. The credentials on the back cover indicate the author knows what he's talking about, and his explanations of the language show it, including sections on English grammar which precede explanations of their German equivalents.
The vocabulary the book offers, including a decent German-English/English-German dictionary in the back, seem adequate for a beginning student, and the exercises at the end of each chapter are good, although I recommend buying a dedicated workbook, since you will not get near the practice you need with the few exercises this book offers.
Despite a handful of sections on ordering at restaurants and the like, this is not a book of quick travel phrases. It is an introductory German grammar, which is effective for those who want to get a handle on how the language works and who want to begin a process of study to arrive at greater fluency.
Overall, I found this an excellent introduction to German language study. I personally found it useful to augment this book with a good dictionary, such as the Collins German Unabridged Dictionary 5th Edition (Harpercollins Unabridged Dictionaries), and a good intermediate/advanced grammar, such as Hammer's German Grammar and Usage.

I have several Spanish books and this is the one I keep going back too. It consists of basic, step by step ways to learn spanish. It's written in language very easy to understand. It's definitely a book you want to invest in to help you learn spanish. In fact, I'm ordering my second copy because my husband has adopted my copy.

I have sat around at Barnes & Noble flipping through all sorts of spanish books and finally came across this one. It's DEFINATELY the EASIEST to read. The chapters are broken up really well towards everday situations. Compared to other books this one has plentiful of variety of vocabs to learn (also has pronunciation for it to help you say the words correctly). So I'm really confident with this one!

I have been looking for a book to help get me over that little hump in learning spanish, and I finally found it. My wife speaks fluently, and has been doing her best to help me learn, but this has bridged the gap between repeating and actually learning. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to either build a base for spanish, or like me, to help get over the hump of just knowing basic phrases.

The other review was obviously written by someone related to the book. When you buy a Spanish learning book one of the most important things to look for is pronunciation. Well this book has very little of that, and when it does half the time it gives some pronunciation you cant even pronounce. Examples: "desperdiciar.....dehs-pehr-SYAHR." "naranja.....nah-RAHN-hhah". How the hell are you suppose to pronounce something with a double hh. This is a few but there are many more examples that are troubling. 1/4 of the book has pronunciations scattered throughout the book. The rest of it you have to guess how to pronounce the words. I have read 3/4 of this book and it has not been helpful at all in learning Spanish.

The title of this book "The Everythng Learning French..... in No Time" is a bit deceiving. I have taught intensive French for over 25 years and was the Director of an Intensive French Program. You simply cannot learn French or any other language "in no time", a few key words and expressions perhaps. And of course there are people who are trilingual and are just "picking up" French, but in general it is deceptive to claim to be able to teach a casual tourist a foreign language in a few classes. There are plenty of Elementary French books as well as "method" type books out there. Some are better than others. This one wasn't bad just not one I would consider using. The pronunciation part was especially poor.

First, this is an excellent French reference book. I took quite a bit of French in school, but needed some in-depth review so I could help my home-schooled daughter with her "passe compose". Perfect book for that... or if you need to review your reflexive verbs, etc. Well laid out... rules are explained in depth, but in very understandable terms.
Unfortunately, though, this book markets itself as a beginner's book. "Learning a language has never been so quick and easy - or so much fun!" the back cover boasts. I love the French language, but this is NOT a "fun" book... it is 98% grammar, 2% practice. You can literally go pages without seeing a sentence in French.

Great Commentary: Balanced, To the Point, Well Contemplated.......2007-08-07
Anything by John Stott has to be good. I am preaching a series through Thessalonians and have found Stott's work to be my favorite. Stott offers the meat, veggies, and potatoes. Good stuff.
If you are not familiar with Stott, he is a conservative evangelical with faith in the integrity of Scripture. He seeks to interpret objectively, seeking the meaning intended by the human author and how the original recepients would have understood these letters.
Although I do not necessarily agree with every single interpretation, I confidently recommend this one for pastors, Bible teachers, or serious laymen.

This is classic Stott -- scholarly aware but relentlessly pastoral. This BST is my favorite series.
Stott's was the most helpful commentary I found for teaching and preaching. Also decent was Leon Morris (1991 - in the excellent NICNT series -- more technical than Stott); Leon Morris' earlier work in the shorter Tyndale series (1956); and the Ancient Christian Commentary (2000 - more novelty than practical help), vol. IX.

If you're at all familiar with Stott, you know that he is one of the finest Christian writers of the 20th century. Anything he writes is a pleasure to read in terms of sheer literary quality, perhaps even on the level of a C.S. Lewis. This commentary is no exception.
As for substance, this is an excellent commentary on 1 & 2 Thessalonians. Stott's emphasis is more pastoral and practical than academic. Though he does occasionally discuss the Greek text, he does so in a way that is easily understandable by those not familiar with Greek. His insights are, well, insightful, and easily applied to the life of any Christian. I used this commentary to prepare a Sunday School lesson this summer; none of the other commentaries I consulted offered anything substantial that I did not already have from Stott.

I have seen David Dempsey speak several times and know him to be absolutely masterful, so I expected this book to be good. But even I was surprised at how remarkable it is. It is instructive enough to be a textbook (full of specific, immediately applicable tips), funny enough to be a humor book and compelling enough to be a novel. David isn't just a master teacher, he is an incredible storyteller, who peppers his advice with amusing anecdotes, often aimed directly at himself. My copy is dog-eared and highlighted to death. As a speaker and professional speech writer, I refer to it often and believe you'll do the same. You'll be hard pressed to think of a question about presenting that David hasn't covered in this fun book!

Public speaking is a reality of my career. I work in a position that has afforded me ample experience in front of an audience, and yet despite the numerous presentations I give each month, I tend to categorize myself as a "good" (not great) speaker. In light of some strategic changes I'm pursuing in my profession, I decided it was time to push myself to the next level of public speaking. In doing so I ordered several books on the subject, all highly recommended by the CEO of my company. One of them was David Dempsey's Better to Best, which I simply could not finish fast enough. His insight on public speaking is absolutely superb. He analyzes all of the components that go into an effective speech and he teaches you how to capitalize on your subject matter and audience. I would recommend this for anyone on any level--personally, socially, and most importantly, professionally. Overall, I was disappointed by this book. The reason I bought it was the layout--it seemed clear and concise and a good review to refresh on the Italian I already know. I do find it full of good summary tables, vocabulary lists and verbs. But there are so many typos and errors! Really, there are mistakes in the verb conjugations and in the answers in the appendix. Unforgivable.

Thank goodness I was just reviewing my knowledge of basic Italian! This book contains many interesting sidebars and fun crossword puzzles as well as interesting contemporary social and historical information but there are so many grammar errors (typos and poor, if any, editing) that I must caution any beginner against using it.
