The Bestselling Classic on Love, Loss, and Letting Go
In Necessary Losses, Judith Viorst turns her considerable talents to a serious and far-reaching subject: how we grow and change through the losses that are an inevitable and necessary part of life. She argues persuasively that through the loss of our mothers' protection, the loss of the impossible expectations we bring to relationships, the loss of our younger selves, and the loss of our loved ones through separation and death, we gain deeper perspective, true maturity, and fuller wisdom about life. She has written a book that is both life affirming and life changing.

Good for everyone.......2007-05-15
Sometimes we wonder why life is so damn tough and sad and tragic. Well, this book doesn't help to answer those questions or to make it seem any better, but it does normalize all of those feelings, and it does explore all of the normal and necessary losses people experience in their lives. My therapist recommended it to me when my not-good-for-me boyfriend broke up with me and in turn, facilitated some of my personal growth and taught me to deal with some really hard feelings. I learned that losing him was necessary to my own well-being. This book is great for everyone.
Awesome!.......2007-05-12
The title caught my attention and I am so glad I bought it. Its one of the easiest books to read about moving on from losses and helps the reader understand that these losses are indeed, necessary. I have been a therapist for 15 years and have not come across such an engaging and practical book as this one. I myself am a slow reader but got through it in record time. Just do yourself and your loved ones a favor by reading this book!
Necessary losses.......2007-03-20
Great book, but you need to take a break now & then..its heavy going and CAN bring up your "stuff" my therapist recommended it...but even she admits that you need to read it slowly..and maybe a few times. It makes a lotta sense.
Deal With Losses.......2007-02-07
I first bought this book over 20 years ago when I got divorced, and it helped me deal with that event as a loss. Frankly, I hadn't even realized that it even was a loss until I read Viorst's wonderful book. I was able also to reach back and deal with the death of my parents, the losses inherent in growing into middle age, and other things . . . even losing my first girl friend.
Since then I have given this book to numerous friends who have had to deal with losses. I hope that they put the book back into full print as it should be required reading for just about everyone.
Necessary Losses.......2007-01-10
First of all, I am a child and adult psychoanalyst and as it happens Mrs. Viorst (a free-lance writer of, among other things, childrens books) was invited by the institute who trained me in Child Psychoanalysis to be a "lay" student-- meaning not medically professional-to participate in the training which was one of the best at that time in child developmental psychoanalytic theory and practice. It was a committment by this author which spanned several years and a very extensive and intensive experience. this book was a distillation of many elements of that program as seen by this very "clear" competent writer. I have given this book to many people and bought this one to replace one of my daughter's copies. It is an indepth look at psychological developement and especially the mother-child relationship (or Object relationships) and was on the New York Times best seller list for many months. It is still very relevent and well-worth the current new and used price.
Book Description
In this moving, wry, and candid novel, widely acclaimed novelist Ayelet Waldman takes us through one woman’s passage through love, loss, and the strange absurdities of modern life.
Emilia Greenleaf believed that she had found her soulmate, the man she was meant to spend her life with. But life seems a lot less rosy when Emilia has to deal with the most neurotic and sheltered five-year-old in New York City: her new stepson William. Now Emilia finds herself trying to flag down taxis with a giant, industrial-strength car seat, looking for perfect, strawberry-flavored, lactose-free cupcakes, receiving corrections on her French pronunciation from her supercilious stepson – and attempting to find balance in a new family that’s both larger, and smaller, than she bargained for. In Love and Other Impossible Pursuits Ayelet Waldman has created a novel rich with humor and truth, perfectly characterizing one woman’s search for answers in a crazily uncertain world.
Customer Reviews:
Just a good read!.......2007-10-20
I knew nothing about the author and frankly don't care. I received this as a pre-pub from a friend and I have to say I totally enjoyed the book. Best book I've ever read? No....but hey we don't have to read War and Peace all the time. Sometimes reading is just for enjoyment and escape.
I thought this book dealt well with some emotional issues, Yes it was occassionally formulaic, a bit OTT, a bit sappy and had traces of LIFETIME TV - but hey sometimes I like to cry at Hallmark commercials!
As with everything in life there is room for all types of of books and all types of readers!
Don't let the reviews on this site dissuade you from the book, try it and see!
A Wonderful Read.......2007-10-08
This was my first Ayelet Waldman book, and I absolutely loved it. The self discovery of the main character Emilia in regards to her relationships with her stepson, step-sisters, her parents, and the death of Isabel was truly eye opening. I think every women can relate to the overwhelming grief Emilia experiences over the death of her child. The author is able to show the growth in the main character by allowing us to see how her past actually impacted and influenced the life she chose for herself. The authors knowledge and use of Central Park as a key player in the lives of these character was really enjoyable. It was as if the reader was able to discover and learn about the park at the same time. Just from reading this book I can honestly say that I am looking forward to taking my own son to visit the park when he is a little older.
Talent is the other impossible pursuit!.......2007-08-31
Amid the glowing reviews, the only way to get an objective view of this book is to read the 1-star comments from other readers. It would save you from having to read the book and then write the negative comment yourself.
This is the first time I've read a novel by Ayelet Waldman and I didn't know that her husband is a famous author -- so I had to judge it by its own merit. And the verdict is that with or without help, the author is a terrible writer!
Thoughts from an infertile.......2007-08-15
I find that when I read books dealing with the topic of child or pregnancy loss I have a difficult time being objective. This piece was no different. As someone who as dealt with the struggles of infertility for may years, I felt consumed by the familiar feelings of loss that form the basis of the book's plot.
While I did not have a difficult time understanding the main character's feelings of isolation, I did have difficulty with her lack of strength. I wonder if there will ever be a book where the character dealing with such a struggle is not portayed as desperate, angry and self-absorbed. I can understand and appreciate the feelings of the main character, but am uncomfortable with the lack of personal integrity. I wish there was a better balance between the desire to continue living and the desire to make peace with the loss. Instead, the main character get wrapped up in subplots that seem to disrespect the nature of her experience.
I was a bit disappointed by the amount of gratuitous sex and swearing in a book that seemed to want to deal with loss. Yes, I realize this was the author's way of creating a realistic character and developing relationships, but it just didn't feel true to me. Had the plot stayed faithful to the progression of this woman's journey, and how that affected friendships and future plans, I would have felt more attached.
As a reader on the beach, this was a great book to pass the time, but as an infertile, and author of The Empty Picture Frame: An Inconceivable Journey Through Infertility who looks to the media to accurately portray this disease, I was a bit disappointed. I realize this is fiction, but even in fiction, things shouldn't always be tied up with a nice neat ribbon.
Love New York City!! A 2007 Favorite -- Must Read!!.......2007-05-29
A great read with terrific characterizations. I still miss the inhabitants of this almost too short [almost perfect] gem! I love New York, & the 92nd Street Y is one of my favorite places -- along with Central Park, etc. Emelia's depression is palpable, but don't be stopped from reading this triumph of a book. William is just terrific!! The dialogue sparkles & is realistic. Emelia's spouse is sexy & smart -- caught, at times between a rock and a hard space. I loved this book & I can't wait to read "Daughter's Keeper!"

A Lover's Kiss?.......2006-08-09
This is one of the series of collaborations about "One Upon a Time" persuasion by Nora Roberts and three of her writer friends. Previously, they got together on "Once Upon a Castle,' 'Once Upon a Dream,' 'Once Upon a Rose,' and "Once Upon a Star." This is the precursor to the "serial" novel which is becoming popular now. Here we have different stories which revolve around a kiss. In England, a "lady" has visions of "A Man" who will enter her life and change it completely. But, "what would she know about a lover's kiss?" She'd never had a lover (poor thing); in fact, she'd only been kissed twice.
'Kiss Me, Kate' is not from Shakespeare but dedicated to all the women who have turned frogs into princes through a little magic (a kiss), and lots of hard work. A kiss is very special -- a magical thing if given by the right person. We all need love and kisses in this life throughout, not just as young women. Passionate kisses are the best, but the cursory kind can be acceptable as a token of his affection. Some men don't feel comfortable kissing a woman, but that's okay. To be kissed or not is not the end of the world, but it can be a beginning to a wonderful friendship.
GREAT!.......2005-09-29
It was shipped fast, and the book was in great condition! Thank you so much!
Is it over yet?.......2002-11-16
These stories were uninteresting, with unrealistic plots and underdeveloped characters. I have read some of the other books in this Once upon series and they have been mediocre, but these stories were all a complete bore. Save your money.
Fun anthology.......2002-10-18
"A World Apart" by Nora Roberts. Kadra the Demon Slayer has vowed to destroy the devils that threaten her world. When the demon warriors and their king flee through a portal to a strange orb, Kadra follows. However New York City in the twenty-first century is eerily bizarre so Kadra coaxes private investigator Harper Doyle to help her battle her demons even while love blossoms between them. Nora Roberts provides a strong fantasy romance.
"Impossible" by Jill Gregory. Her family has always sheltered Princess Erinn of Marlbury from the ravages of the hundred-year war. Still their enemy Tynon of Bordmoor kidnaps her. Tynon believes that Erinn is a witch, who has enchanted his land and soon afterward his heart. Jill Gregory paints a wonderful fantasy romance.
"Sealed with a Kiss" by Ruth Ryan Langan. Her father promised powerful Highland chieftain Duncan MacLean his daughter Arianna Douglas in marriage in exchange for protection against invaders. When Duncan's warriors come to escort Arianna, his nephew Lachlan steals her heart. This is an entertaining tale that although the key characters are never developed.
"Kiss Me, Kate" by Marianne Willman. Kate Singleton inherits a manor with a resident enchanted prince. However, her heart belongs to her new neighbor, Michael Bellamy. With a wee bit of help, Kate might save the prince and gain heart's desire too. This is a fun fairy tale that the audience will enjoy yet feel the American, the Englishman, and the frog needed further development perhaps in a novella.
The fifth "Once Upon a ..." is a delightful fantasy romance anthology.

Lifesaving.......2007-03-25
This book saved the relationship with my first son going through adolescence. Sometimes you just need a little perspective and this book gives that and more in lovely bite size pieces. Working in the suggestions that this author gives is natural and stress free, this is my second copy. I loaned the first out to a friend and she wouldn't give it up when my second started going through his "growing pains," I like to re-read it constantly to keep all of the tips fresh in my mind!
Excellent.......2003-07-18
This is an excellent book, and I suggest starting it when you have a 12 or 13 year old - an age when you still have a little control over them! I have the hard cover, which has nice artwork on the cover, and it would make a great gift.
Down-to-earth, kind, astute, and funny.......2000-09-05
My 14-year-old daughter uses this book very effectively to gently prod me on issues that need a little more attention. Every few months, she puts a few bookmarks in at carefully chosen points. I get to feel like I'm doing most stuff OK, and she gets to give constructive criticism without a fight. THANK YOU
A "quick read" book with practical, simple tips........1998-10-23
This book offers quick simple tips to solve any number of situations a parent encounters with a teen. Helpful advice will enable the adult to apply sound principals to parenting (and sometimes cause the adult to re-think the way we deal with our teen).
Book Description
Respected psychologist Dr. Brad Sachs helps parents to recognize their unrealistic expectations for their teenagers and to love, accept and nurture the family they have to its full potential. His approach frees them to discover acceptance of themselves and of their children.
The ages twelve to eighteen are often the most challenging and trying years for adolescents––and their parents. No other phase of life is characterized by so much physical and psychological change happening so quickly. And frequently the child parents had loved and understood becomes a teenager they hardly recognize––the child who loved music grows into a teen who wants to play video games rather than the piano; or the little girl who loved dolls becomes a teen who loves staying out with her older, rebellious boyfriend. The Good Enough Teen, however, shows you how to see your child's evolution as a window of opportunity––for you, for your child, and for your entire family. Rather than having you brace for your offspring's adolescence with your eyes shut and your jaw clenched, this book will help you to understand the invisible transformation teens are experiencing, as well as the ways in which your own adolescence intimately influences this understanding. You will find yourself better able to see even your child's most exasperating behaviours as steps in his or her striving towards maturity, rather than chronic problems or mean–spirited efforts designed to make you miserable.
The Good Enough Teen presents a developmental overview of what parents can expect from their children during adolescence, then delineates the five stages in the journey towards accepting a child for who he or she is. With prescriptive tools and strategies for parents, including checklists, quizzes, and exercises, and numerous case studies from the author's own practice, The Good Enough Teen is vital help for any parent with a teenager.

Book written for the market.......2005-12-03
This book was written to cash in on the market, now there is a series of books about "Good Enough" people, just like "Men are from Mars" series. what next, the Good Enough Teen on a Date, How the Good Enough Teen diets, Good Enough Anorexic Daughter. this is drivel. The author admits in his prior work to suffering from Couvade syndrome, where he is jealous of his wife for bearing children and dreams of having breasts that provide warm milk. he is confused. He admits to being neglected by his father and traded for a can of gas when the family car broke down. the whole concept is of "good Enough" sends a terrible message of compromise to any child. the author is cleary narcissistic, possibly suffering from Asperger Syndrome, looking to make a buck to afford a good position in a home, where he can receive proper treatment.
TERRIBLE.......2005-11-22
oh man this book was worthless. I tried the stuff in this book and now my kids hate me and my wife thinks I'm an idiot. Try another book. This one has ruined my family life.
ALL PARENTS OF TEENS SHOULD READ THIS.......2005-08-12
This is a fabulous book that I happened upon and could not put down. It should be titled, "What to expect from your teens and yes, it is normal". I found this book a fabulous tool with which to measure my teens progress against those of other teens without compairing them to the unrealistic expectations of many driven parents in our society and to take a step back and recognize the tremendous accomplishments that they make every day through good choices and responsible behaviors despite the occasional misstep. Teenagers are growing as rapidly as toddlers and this is a how to manual for all parents.

Book Description
This book is a grand epic in which Roman Frister reconstructs the real-life story of the Levy family to produce a unique portrait of a Jewish family swept along in the rise and fall of German history. We follow them through the hard times and the happier ones, in business and in their personal lives. As history is interwoven with Frister's interpretation of the Levy family's experiences, this intellectually engaging book—in truth a historical document—reads like an epic novel.
Customer Reviews:
BEFORE THE STORM.......2005-03-04
Roman Frister brings the reader into the homes, the hearts and minds of the Levy family, beginning with the devout Ascher Jackel in the 19th century. From virtually nothing, Ascher sets the business standards for the sons and grandsons to follow, while maintaining a strong devotion to both the Jewish faith and the land of his birth. By the time of the rise of Hitler, the now wealthy and still very devout Jewish family, find themselves forever reasoning with what is too enormous to comprehend. Each son, daughter, husband and wife formulate an individual path that will hopefully get them through the chaos of their beloved Germany. The reader becomes the traveling companion. The book is excellent. History and emotion are woven together by a more than skillful author. "Impossible Love" is difficult to put down before its completion.

Book Description
When a high-powered gallery owner collides with a wildly offbeat artist, it’s the perfect recipe for disaster. But in her 63rd bestselling novel, Danielle Steel proves that when two hopelessly mismatched people share a love for art, a passion for each other, and a city like Paris, nothing is truly impossible…or is it?
Everything Sasha does is within the boundaries of tradition. Liam is sockless in December. Sasha is widowed, a woman who knows she was lucky enough to be married to the most wonderful man in the world and thankful for every moment they had. Liam is half in and half out of a marriage that only a “wacky” artist could manage, and that his own impossibly impulsive behavior has helped tear apart. But while Sasha has been methodically building her father’s Parisian art gallery into an intercontinental success story, Liam has been growing into one of the most original and striking young painters of his time. So while the two are utterly unalike–and a nine-year age difference stares them squarely in the face–the miracle of art brings them crashing together. Now the question is, can Sasha guard her reputation while juggling a secret, somewhat scandalous relationship? And how can Liam, who lives for the moment, put up with a woman who insists on having things her own way, in her own style, and at her own time?
For Sasha, it’s a matter of keeping Liam hidden from her grown children and well-heeled clientele as she commutes between New York and Paris and two thriving galleries. For Liam, it’s about creating chaos out of order, bringing out the wild streak that Sasha barely knows she has, of choosing pizza over foie gras, and making love when others are busy making money. That is, until a family tragedy suddenly alters Liam’s life–and forces a choice and a sacrifice that neither one of them could have expected. But from the snow falling on the Tuileries to the joy of eating ice cream by candlelight, the artist and the art dealer have tasted perfection. And giving up now might just be the most impossible thing of all.
With unerring insight into the hearts of men and women–and into the soul of the artist –Danielle Steel takes us into a world of glamour and genius, priceless art and dazzling creativity. From the luxurious galleries of Europe to the endless beaches of the Hamptons,
ImPossible weaves an extraordinary tale of love and compromise, of taking chances and counting blessings. With brilliant color and breathtaking emotion, Danielle Steel has written her most compelling novel to date.
Customer Reviews:
Fairytale for grownups.......2007-09-16
This is a typical Danielle Steel book, one of those light, entertaining slightly unlikely stories where everything seem possible.
Rich, successful female gallery owner and much younger poor genius artist fall in love. Age difference causes huge problems but nothing can stop the two lovebirds. They scatter around the world overcoming every obstacle. When the heroine is working at her gallery in Paris, the poor artist still manages to pop over from his small apartment in London every other weekend, send huge bouquets of red roses and finally buy his beloved a little cocker spaniel puppy they have seen together in a pet shop in Paris.
Little "Socks" is, by the way, a most unusual 3 months old puppy. When mom goes away on business to her gallery in New York, on holidays with her lover to the South of France, Rome or wherever, Socks stays alone in the Paris home (which is not staffed when mommy Sasha is away), and seems to manage just fine. Food, walks, whatever! And when mom and her boyfriend happen to be in Paris, they walk Socks in Bois de Bologne, and mom does not know what she would do without her beloved pet. In other words, Socks literally pops conveniently in and out of the manuscript, just like so many other things in Ms Steel's book; money, opportunities and all sorts of co-incidencies.
And yet, I enjoyed this book enormously. For all its unlikeliness, the fairytale quality, it does still have something warm, real, human, honest - even likely - about it. Danielle Steel manages to make her characters come alive, a wonderful story come true. She makes me believe it's all possible.
This is not a literary work of the depth and insight like for instance "Letters from Nam" or "Accident", which are examples of books by Danielle Steel I would recommend to more "serious" readers.
"Impossible" is just what I loved about it, a nice little fairytale for grownups.
Poorly written, unedited book!!!!.......2007-09-12
I was surprised to say the least, to find that such a poorly written book had actually been published. Not having read a DS novel in years, I jumped at the chance to see what she was now writing, when my room mate had this book lying around the house. Like most of the reviewers, I found the grammar to be atrocious, it was repetitive, there was barely a plot, there was too much, way too much telling instead of showing. I found too that there could not possibly have been an editor for this book. There was actually a confusion of the pronouns " he/she at one point in the book. There were also contradictions in the book. Like some reviewers I believe that she may not have written this book. I remember I got turned off her books years ago, when I read one of her books and every other sentence started with the word "and". The early books "Family Album", "Crossings", "Palomino" were great reads, but "Impossible" has to be one of the worst books ever written. The publisher needs to take note.
Impossible.......2007-07-12
Danielle Steel writes another romantic story this time about an aristocrat art dealer named Sasha who is 49 years old and falls in love with one of her artists who is 9 years younger. The relationship was unexpected and came at a time right after Sasha's husband Arthur passed away while she was still mourning his death like a recluse.
Liam is 40 years old and is separated from his wife and children. He is gorgeous and full of life, although at times is out of control. Sasha knows that the relationship is impossible due to the many differences, but both are truly in love and they try to make it work. The story is passionate and captivating however the storyline keeps repeating over and over.
"Sex-starved old fool".......2007-05-02
Wow, 400 pages that goes by incredibly fast. The plot is very absorbing and I really like the touch of French throughout the book (foods, places, etc.) I agree that Danielle never ceases to "remind" readers of certain events in a repetitive manner. I even saw one coming as I read lol. Seriously though, it was touching to see Sasha Suvery handle the hurdles in her life. I'm not all too convinced that her love romance with Liam Allison is true to life though. It did seem like she took him back many times throughout the story; especially after the way he chose to leave *rollseyes* I suppose Sasha was a "sex-starved old fool" lol. Some of the material had me cracking up too!! Especially when Eugenie, "looked like she'd been hit over the head with a poker." LOL! Impossible is a great read for all for sheer pleasure if nothing else. I also liked how Danielle dropped in the reference to Sunset in St. Tropez. Enjoy!!
A hopeless Danielle Steel Fan.......2007-04-26
I know I am a hopeless DS fan. I have a book shelf of nearly her entire collection, just minus the last few years, as the books have lost the charisma and caliber they once were. I keep telling myself that I will stop reading her new books, and pick up one of my old favorites like Secrets or Kalidoscope. Even still, I am drawn to reading her new books as well, and usually pick them up on major discount.
Maybe it's because I have a 7 month old and am looking for mindless, fun reading now and again, but I did enjoy Impossible. I am with everyone else, the writting has declined severely, as have the plots. I can't recall the last book I read of hers where there wasn't constant repetition in the writting and words that didn't drive me crazy. However, I guess I'm a glutton for punishment! Still, I can't help but read some of her new books. And, I actually do think a few of the books in the past few years have improved, I think it was Safe Harbor and Answered Prayers that I thought were better.
Anyway, I'm giving this book 3 stars because it still entertained me, and I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the story of the two oppisites that attracted, and how they both worked to make sacrafices for each other. At times, their encounters were very simple, but romantic. The ending was a little annoying though, going back and forth, but I was happy with the final ending. I know I'm a hopeless fan....I am still holding out hope that one day her writing will return to what it once was!

Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Experience.......2006-10-10
This CD of Eminescu poems set to classical piano music immerses the listener in the world of the poet. The translations have won numerous awards and acclaim for the translator Adrian George Sahlean. The music was recorded in concert by Horia Mihail for the express purpose of being used in the project, and the reading by Jeremy Geidt is a lucid, accessible rendering of the content.
The care put into the production of this CD reflects the esteem with which Romanians hold Eminescu. In my experience, this is a unique product, one that provides the English speaking world an avenue for the appreciation of a great Romantic poet.

Buy This Tape!.......2007-06-04
As a psychic, I see relationships happen for reasons we're sometimes blind to and perhaps even in spite of our best intents. What do these relationships bring us? How do we make sense out of a broken heart?
Jan Bauer is wonderful. It's not often that I hear such a fascinating and comprehensive conversation and it even includes James Hillman.
